Travel with Rick Steves: Public Radio Fundraiser
Released September 14, 2007
Your station can add to its fundraising success by using this special fundraiser program to replace a regularly-scheduled Travel with Rick Steves show during your membership campaign.
Rick will also make an effort to be available once a year to each affiliate for live or recorded custom fundraiser appearances. Contact his scheduler Ashley Southwick by phone at 425-771-8303. ext. 293 during Pacific time zone business hours to see when Rick can honor your request.
The Rick Steves premiums packages are optional. Premium-specific pitching is limited to the "2" segment following each module. Rick designed the premium packages and pitches, based on his substantial success as a fundraiser for a number of public broadcasters.
The Rick Steves premium packages are available for your station with no minimum order requirements, and at a very reasonable wholesale cost. Telephone Angie Kirkwood at 425-771-8303, ext. 240 during Pacific time business hours for ordering information. You can also email pledge@ricksteves.com to place orders for these premiums. Be sure to specify it is for radio.
Important instructions on assembling the modules for broadcast:
- The fundraiser consists of a billboard and three main segments. The end of each segment includes a non-premium program pitch from Rick.
- The fundraiser can be customized to your station's needs. See the various suggested rundowns for timing options on when to start each segment, and how long to time your local pitch breaks to keep the show to one hour.
- There is also a short fourth segment feature, for stations wishing for extra material to extend Rick's fundraising beyond one hour.
- Rick pitches the Rick Steves-related premium packages in additional "part 2" portions of each segment (i.e, Segment A-2, Segment B-2, Segment C-2, and Segment D-2).
- You can run these segments immediately following the more-generic program pitches contained at the end of the "part 1" segments.
- Or you can insert some local pitching at the end of a segment's part 1, hand it back to Rick to describe the premium packages in "part 2," then conclude your local pitch break before starting the next segment.
- The end of segment B contains a two-part generic pitch from Rick. You can extend Rick's program pitch by about a minute by having Segment B-1-b follow Segment B-1-a. Then follow that with Segment B-2 if you are offering the premium packages.
- Not offering the Rick Steves premium packages to donors? Then go to your local pitching at the end of each segment's "part 1," without using the "part 2" for each segment.

Funder — Rundown Options
These suggested rundown options will help you organize your timings for the Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser. Program Options A-1 and A-2 are for stations using the Rick Steves premiums. Program Options B-1, B-2, and B-3 are for stations not offering the Rick Steves premiums. Program Option C suggests a way to make a longer Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser show, in which you can incorporate some of the 2006 fundraiser features.
Some of the rundown options require relatively brief local pitch breaks, in order to time out to one hour (60:00 minutes). Note that the time allocated for your local pitching is expanded by at least three minutes per pitch when you include the time Rick uses for his program pitch at the end of each segment, plus his premium-specific pitches.
If your station wants to use the newscast cutaway at 01:00 during the fundraiser show, and keep the Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser to one hour, you should limit it to Newscast A only (ie, opt out at the 04:00 cutaway from NPR or BBC). Otherwise, to include an entire five minute newscast, you should extend the fundraiser program beyond one hour, or limit yourself to brief local pitch breaks.
Stations wanting to extend the Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser beyond one hour can use segment D, as well as the two food-related features (segments C-1 and D-1) from the 2006 fundraiser. See Program Option C for a suggested 90-minute rundown.
