Rick Steves' Europe: A Symphonic JourneyOctober 23rd & 24th, Edmonds Center for the Arts • 7:30 p.m., $25Rick Steves is bringing his passion for tour guiding home to Edmonds. Partnering with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra, he'll take audiences on a symphonic journey, exploring how people of every nation have music that quickens their heartbeat and sets their patriotic spirit soaring. In this special concert, attendees will join Steves, music director Michael Miropolsky, and the Cascade Symphony Orchestra on a musical tour that begins in the USA, then touches down in seven different European countries. For each stop, Rick will paint the cultural context in words, and then the orchestra will play stirring popular favorites —Grieg for Norway, Smetana for the Czech Republic, Strauss for Austria, Berlioz for France, Elgar for England, Wagner for Germany, and Verdi for Italy—accompanied by a big-screen video montage from each location. Each selection will celebrate a particular nationality, while the finale, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" (Europe's official anthem), will celebrate a continent whose motto is, "United in diversity." Performances of "Rick Steves' Europe: A Symphonic Journey with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra" will be filmed and edited into a one hour special to air on KCTS in Seattle and nationally on public television. A DVD of the concert will be produced in hopes of raising money for both the Cascade Symphony Orchestra and public television stations across the nation. Win a Rick Steves Tour!At each performance, a lucky audience member will be selected at random to receive a Rick Steves seven-day European city tour for two of his/her choice! It could be you!
