Itinerary

Daily Activity Key

  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Trier for a "Welcome to Germany" meeting. Then we'll take an evening walk through Deutschland's oldest city, and get acquainted over dinner together. Sleep in Trier (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Burg Eltz Castle and Trier

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of the historic Roman and medieval core of Trier, marveling at its Porta Nigra gate, the most impressive Roman fortification in Germany. Then we'll drive along the hill-hugging vineyards and villages of the Mosel River Valley, stopping for lunch together in the über-quaint village of Beilstein. Nearby, we'll stretch our legs with a walk and tour of mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence. We'll return to Trier for a free evening to explore more of this pedestrian-friendly town. Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Baden-Baden Beckons

Our destination today is the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival we'll tour the elaborate casino and take an orientation stroll through the town. You'll have the rest of your day and evening free to "do the spa" (with or without your swimsuit), wander along the shaded riverside promenade, or hike into the surrounding hills. Sleep in Baden-Baden (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, giving some free time to linger in the past and order up a bratwurst or light German snack. Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in clifftop Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views, have dinner together, and sleep (3 nights). Bus: 6 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Hike in the Swiss Alps

The day is all yours. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain walk...or ride the gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and find your way back to Mürren...or take a narrow-gauge railway up the other side of the valley to Kleine Scheidegg, near the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

This morning we'll witness the roaring, thundering, crashing, splashing display of nature's awesome power in Trümmelbach — a series of subterranean waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet into darkness behind the valley's cliffs. You'll have the afternoon free to take a brisk mountain walk, or explore more of the Berner Oberland on your own before we regroup for dinner. Bus: ½ hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairy-tale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens, and oompah-hospitality. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together and sleep in Munich (2 nights). Bus: 7 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town and learn about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and the Luge

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairy-tale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle. We'll hike back down to share a picnic lunch together. Our bus isn't our only ride today — let's barrel down a luge course (weather permitting). Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center, and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 6 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: All Day to Soak Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring an ancient cemetery. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could sneak away to this evening. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty village of Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so upon arrival we'll carry our bags through town and enjoy a boat cruise on the way to our inviting lakeside hotel. Enjoy a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before enjoying tonight's dinner together at our hotel. Sleep in Hallstatt (1 night). Boat: 1 hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to tour the thought-provoking Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna — once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with a neighborhood orientation walk where your guide will discuss your best bets for dinner on your own and a nearby music performance. Sleep in Vienna (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in elegant Vienna with a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a walking tour of the city's rich Habsburg heritage, including a visit to the art-filled Kunsthistorisches Museum. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by shuttle, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Adjust to constant Alpine weather changes that can interfere with sightseeing.
  6. Handle steep walks and long castle stair climbs at Burg Eltz, Neuschwanstein, Trümmelbach Falls and others.

My husband and I were very reluctant to take a 'tour' - we usually travel on our own to other countries. However, we wanted to see multiple countries in Europe - so we decided to take a shot on the Rick Steve's tours. We loved it - since we are such independent travelers by nature - this provided us with enough time to do what we wanted to do - PLUS the added benefit of knowledgable tour guides to give us information about the cities/towns we visited.

Second trip with RS and enjoyed every minute. Our travel group was fun, friendly and each person added to my overall delight with the trip! I enjoyed the mix of "scheduled "time with a city guide or group dinners, but with plenty of time to explore on one's own. The mix of big cities, small towns, historic places and magnificant mountains was perfect.

Wonderful! I am very impressed by the guides, the places we visited, the hotels in which we stayed, and the "surprises" each day relating to the area in which we were traveling: wine sampling near the Rhine region, chocolate sampling in Switzerland, a Black Forest Cake birthday celebration on my husband's birthday, an alpenhorn/accordion performance in Murren, etc. The trip was very well-planned to include the most representative places and activities.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"1) The view from the top of the Schilthorn 2) The view from our hotel room in Murren, complete with steep green hills, cog train, German farmhouses, cows, and especially the clanging of many cowbells. It was truly idyllic."

This was a trip of a lifetime and a fulfillment of a childhood dream. I wish my father was here to enjoy this trip with me. Every day there were breathtaking views, wonderful people, delicious food and an education! I appreciate the mix of small town life and big city adventures. The pace was perfect! It was nice to have free time to explore on our own and check out some of the recommendations from Holger.

We saw and did a lot. Switzerland and Hallstatt were my favorite part of the tour. Activities were well planned and interesting. Speaking for myself I thought the tour was too regimented and intense compared with the the other tours we have taken in France and Italy. Sometimes more like work than a vacation especially up and on the road by 8a.m.!

This was my first tour and my first trip to Europe. I was grateful for the high level of activity and the thoughtful attention to lodging and food! At times I struggled a little with the heavy emphasis on "group", but then, like I said, this was my first tour. But I'm very grateful for a such a well thought out itinerary, and I know that my experience was heightened because of people who had gone before, and who were trying to make my experience the best it could be. Thank you.

The tour provided me to see portions of Europe that if left to my own devices to explore would not have happened. The pace of the tour was perfect. Our group was diverse in age and background but cohesive as a whole. One of best things about the tour was the friends I made with my tour 'buddies.' Overall, the tour was a wonderful experience and the best trip I've taken.

Truly the best vacation I have ever taken! The entire tour was very well organized and Rolinka and Maisie were outstanding! Meeting 26 new friends from across the US and traveling with them was one of the best bonuses of the entire experience. I will travel with Rick Steves' Europe again!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Baden Baden surprised me. I really felt it would just be a so so experience. But as we approached Baden Baden on the bus, Rolinka gave one of her typical fantastic verbal preps for the experience. Once she got through explaining the Roman baths, I was all in! And that meant I went for the "full Monty" experience...it was amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat!"

I felt comfortable on the tour - not always the case, especially in cities. But this time was different. I enjoyed myself most of the time despite the fact that I was still recovering from Lyme Disease. I was stunned by the Alps seen from Murren. Hallstatt was perfectly beautiful, Mauthausen moving and sobering. Vienna had so much to see that we would.have to go back for several days to do it justice.

The tour was well worth the money. We visited 8 cities and were always on the go it seems. Loved the smaller cities especially. the meals, guides. Other tour members were great besides the weather was perfecto. Had a greater knowledge of WWII and European history. We returned home happy but exhausted.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Muren in the evening was especially a "WOW" moment. We arrived there in the evening with cloudy weather. And we woke up in the morning to warm sunshine with the picturesque all around us. That night Rolinka had a surprise for us.: a native Alps horn player and another playing the accordion. It was warm the sun was setting and the cows came down from the mountain with their bells. It does not get any better than that!"

We loved Andrea's enthusiasm and willingness to go "over and above" to make all parts of our trip run well. There were many times when she would say what she planned to do in free time if we wanted to do it with her and would also give plenty of alternative options as well. The pace was good and we could choose to slow it down by opting out of some city tours or other activities or " pump it up" if wished to do more or see alternative sites. Loved our group too.

Everything clicked for this experience: the weather, the group, and the guide. Being in the Alps with unbelievable sunshine (shirt-sleeve weather) wasn't expected, and yet we had it. Andrea was a fount of information and was personable and helpful. Despite one day of bad weather, she adjusted the experience to include the luge rides, even though we were at another location by that point. This adjustment to keep us 'whole' would not have been executed with another tour company.

The GAS tour was a great itinerary and well [INVALID]d by our guide, Andrea! There were many AWEsome moments - I just couldn't stop taking pictures. How does Rick Steves arrange that perfect weather for Switzerland? It was beyond gorgeous. There was a lot of bus time due to distance covered, but we were comfortable and our guide used much of it to give us more information and understanding of the places we visited. Overall, it was an excellent time and I'm ready to go again!

I loved our tour group and our guide Nika and assistant guide Kevin. The overall experience was good but my biggest complaint is the way the rooms are assigned. We recommended this tour to our friends that joined us so we saw each others rooms at every stay. We were never given a balcony room. Our friends recieved 4 balcony rooms. I would think there would be a way that everyone got similar rooms overall. I complained to Kevin and Nika and they said they did not control who got which rooms

This was our first Rick Steve's tour experience and we were very pleased overall. It was so nice to have no worries getting around Europe where we did not know the language. It was also great to have Nika "prepping" us for the next location. Although I understand the necessity to get up early when you want to see so many new things, I will say it was hard at times. You definitely have to tell yourself that this is travel trip and not a vacation. So many great sights to see and we saw them all!!!

The Tour Guide was outstanding, I loved his historical perspective and actually wanted him to talk MORE than he did ( he gave a great deal of info but he was soo good at teaching and speaking clearly that it was easy to listen to him.) Loved hotels situated in center of town - very convenient. While we are well-traveled, we've never had the fun & camaraderie of pushing our own suitcases a few blocks from bus to hotel. Thought our PhD guides were outstanding, giving us historical info at the drop of a hat. Liked their suggestions of where to go on our own time. This was our first experience that involved NO tipping! Amazing, but pretty wonderful! Vienna Museums were amazing! Loved the art, the historical musical

"So enjoyed the MODERN spa in Baden-Baden! We so need those in the USA! We so understood why there were so many locals there, the old and the young! Being in Munick for Octoberfest was great fun - going to the Hoffenhaus (used 400 yrs) for dinner, beer, dancing was great time! Most dramatic event was 45 minute hike UP to Neuschwanstein Castle. While I tried not to grumble, I did PANT loudly attracting the attention of Japanese tourists going downhill."

The tour met all if not more of our expectations. Fabian was so well informed and knowledgeable. We feel not only did we have a great tour but we learned so much about the areas and its history. He was always concerned about seeing as much as possible and explained the timeline as we went though different stops. ( we do tend to not always hear!!)

This tour covered the spectrum from small villages to large cities to spectacular mountains. It seemed to have something for everybody. Traveling from place to place via bus was made enjoyable by our guide who filled those travel times with upcoming information about our next location as well as providing background information about those locations. Hans took it upon himself to lead us on a hike in the Swill Alps on his day off and bringing us in touch with some of the locals.

I had heard that Rick Steve's tours were the best but I was amazed at the overall quality of the entire tour. I couldn't have asked for anything more. The places we visited were amazing. The pace of the trip was perfect as we alternated between small town, country settings and large cities. The trip far surpassed my expectation no detail was left unattended and I have been spreading the praises of a "Rick Steves" tour to all who will listen to me. I even lover the little sweet handouts on the bus trip. A small thing but a nice touch. The pace was great with just enough time on your own and no pressure to join the tour if you did not want to go. I only negative thing I would say was the King Ludwig castle visit, it was so rushed, in and out, came away feeling why bother

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were far to many to pick just one. The Mountain view of Switzerland, the charming villages below. The Trummelback Falls had to be up there as a Wow. So much History in the town of Trier too was right up there."

It begins with the timely delivery of information and friendly service. The chemistry of the group was friendly, warm and fun. This was supported by Tara (guide) and Francois (driver). All that made for a great context for the tour. And I continue to be impressed by the Rick Steves Tours: a wonderful balance of history, culture, art, nature, walking tours, museums, and, of course, the luge. The variety of stops kept it interesting.

It was one of the best I have done so far. The only bothersome thing was getting the train to Trier. This was our 7th tour, and it was amazing how fast we all clicked. Great group. The scenery was pretty grand, especially Switzerland and the cows. Our weather was mostly warm and comfortable. The mix of large and small cities was just right. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Not the usual WOW moment, but on our free day in Murren my husband and I decided to just hike up in the hills. We went to the mountain and panoramic views. Mountain hiking was not new to us, coming from the Pacific NW. But when we decided to sit down and rest, it was on a bench with 15 heifers and their melodic cow bells near by. There we were, all the mountain views, our cows serenading us and no one in sight for most of a half hour. It was grand. A real Heidi experience."

This tour was our first trip to Europe and our first experience on an organized tour. I felt that it was very well thought out and organized. I liked the mix of organized and free time and that 'extra' guidance that we needed to feel comfortable when we were on our own. This tour more than exceeded expectations! Our group was a nice mix and bonded well. The tour provided a nice balance of planned and free time. At first I thought 14 days of bus touring would be too much "togetherness." However, that was not the case. Our guide, Rolinka, was gregarious, efficient, and very well-organized. Not only did she constantly educate us on the history/politics/economics of the areas we visited, but she also taught us skills to become more independent travelers.

"Everything in Switzerland was a "wow" from the drive by the first long lake to the first gondola ride up to our hotel in Murren. We saw and learned a lot about Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Tara was very knowledgeable about all the countries. She was extremely patient and helped us all the time. I particularly liked our outing she took us on when we were in Murren. She invited us to join her on a hike to Kleine Scheidegg. What a fantastic trip! Every place we visited was worthwhile. I have been interested in Rick Steves tours since I first used one of his guidebooks (very small and with hand-drawn maps) in 1988, but we have always preferred to travel independently. However, this tour was a perfect mix of group time and free time. Our fellow travelers simply couldn't have been more compatible. The tour format gave us the informational and educational aspect that is often missing from independent travel. Loved it!

Excellent tour! This was our first visit to the European continent and I would highly recommend to anyone that a Rick Steve's tour is a fantastic way to get introduced to European travel. While this tour was very well organized, our tour guide also constantly educated us as to how to be better travelers on our own in Europe. This was my first Rick Steves' Tour and had never traveled with people I didn't know. The group was very pleasant to be with. The tour was well planned and very enjoyable. Our guide, Rolinka, was excellent. She was super at alternative plans if the original plan didn't work. Great time.

Since we enjoy going on magnificent vacations, but don't have a lot of spare time for planning we signed up for the Rick Steves bus tour. We weren't really sure if a bus tour would be our cup of tea. We envisioned the bus being full of slow senior citizens and annoying friendless people, but it wasn't and we loved the trip. Our tour guide was fabulous and it was beyond fantastic to have someone else worry about what was happenin

My first Rick Steves' Tour and it met all of my expectations. Bus was very comfortable, Yoshi was excellent driver and our tour guide, Rolinka educated us about the history of places we would visit. It was great to stay two nights at most of the places which was more relaxing. Guide could adjust itinerary if necessary. Itinerary is amazing. Buddy system works well and is efficient. 24 individuals easily became a friendly group.

My wife and I are younger and were not sure what we were signing up for. However, to our surprise it was a great experience for us. I believe having an itinerary where you are not on the bus everyday truly makes it feel like you're experiencing Europe the way it should be. The bus was not overly crowded which certainly helped a lot was well through the longer days. A lot of the little touches certainly helped as well - having beverages on board, guide recommendations, etc.

"On our last day in the Swiss Alps, finally seeing them after the clouds gave way. It was breathtaking to see them in person as we spent two days with only small glimpses of the mountains hiding behind the clouds. "It's hard to pick one, so I won't. The time in Murren, Switzerland was incredible. I can't say I have ever seen anything more beautiful. Certainly the Neuschwanstein Castle takes your breath away and Hallstatt was amazing. It was the countryside and nature areas that we enjoyed most."

As noted above, my tour experience was "Outstanding", and proved to be more than I expected ! Our Tour Guide, Hans, and the various city tour walk guides made the entire trip enjoyable and knowledge filled. All of the hotels were more than we anticipated. They were organized, clean, and many had new appliances or appointments which made the end of a busy day very enjoyable. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners were well planned and quite tasteful. (I have more to say - but no room).

We've been to Europe many times including these countries (Germ, Switz, Aust). This tour was by far the best. With only 25 people in the group, we all got to know one another. We had our own time, but also had fun dining and hanging with the group. Also-preferred the smaller, more quaint towns (such as Hallstatt, Austria), and the out of the way stops (Trummelbach Falls in Switz)vs larger cities such as Vienna.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Trummelbach Falls in Switzerland-the subterranean water falls. I'd never seen or heard anything like this! Talk about thundering waterfalls twisting, turning, churning inside and all the way down a mountain-a sight (and sound) to behold. Looking at the Alps from the Schilthorn was awesome and climbing around the Alps was "something" as well. Thanks to our tour guide (Hans) who kindly let us "tag" along on his time off to show us some great hiking trails. Very fun!"

Best vacation I've ever taken! The size of the tour was perfect. Hotel, food, our guide - all great. Wouldn't change a thing...although would be nice to figure out how to add another day in Hallstatt.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The 3 days in Murren. Due to all the rain and overcast skies, it was doubtful that we'd see the Alps at all. Having the clouds disappear in the early morning hours of our first day in Murren was breathtaking. The tour was everything we had expected. The accommodations and food were excellent. We enjoyed the format of the guide providing an orientation followed by a local guide providing a more detailed tour. The balance between free time guided tour time was great as it provided good information and the freedom for self exploration.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite moment on the tour occurred in Murren. We had arrived the previous evening with overcast skies and some rain. Our guide had told us the previous tour had been similar and had not seen the peaks of the Alps. The following morning my wife and I awoke early to find clear skies and beautiful views of the surrounding peaks. We got some great sunrise pictures that will help us remember that moment for a lifetime."

We had not done a tour before, although we had planned and used Rick Steve's books to plan our own European travel. We didn't have time to plan on our own so we decided to book a tour. We were not disappointed! We loved our tour guide Donald, and the group size was small. ( 17 people) We had time on our own and group time. This was a nice balance. We do wish we had more time in a few of the places we visited, (Trier, Munich, Vienna) but overall a great tour.

Fantastic! We really enjoyed ourselves, and Rick Steves took the stress out of planning and let us sit back and enjoy the trip. Donald, our experienced tour guide, was a lot of fun and full of information which greatly enhanced our experience. We loved joining up with a small group of veteran travelers, who were fun to get to know and certainly not overbearing. Most of our hotels were great, and the meals provided by "Uncle Rick" were authentic and delicious!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One word. Switzerland. Murren was breathtaking, and our favorite part of the trip. We were blown away by the beauty of staying in 5000 feet up the Swiss Alps. Having a room with a view was the icing on the cake. Or course, we couldn't have asked for better weather, as we had bright blue skies every day we were there. It was such a memorable part of our trip. Though the trip had so many highlights, Switzerland was our favorite part."

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour and it was just as enjoyable as the first (Paris and the Heart of France, 2013). The tour took us to fascinating places we never would have visited on our own (Hallstatt, Burg Eltz, Murren). With the travel logistics covered, we immersed ourselves in the cultural and visual expereiences of each locale. Our guide and driver were professional and personable which made travel a breeze.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had two WOWs: 1-Hallstatt in the evening and early morning when the day trippers had vacated. The village was cozy, quiet and picturesque. So many unexpected vistas through narrow alleys and around blind corners. Unbelievable photo ops. 2-The Friedrichsbad in Baden-Baden was an unexpected WOW for me. I'm so thankful that I didn't allow my modesty to sway my decision to engage in the spa experience. It was so unique from a sensory perspective and the whole endeavour was quite liberating."

Our expectations were exceeded at every step of this trip. We were fortunate to have a smaller group (15) of delightful co-travellers. Trier was a wonderful surprise in many ways - most of all, its rich history. We got up our courage and did the full 17 step Fredricksbad program and loved it. The Berner Oberland was the most spectacular outdoor experience of our lives. Munich, Salzburg and Vienna were all so different - and great!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were three for me. Murren astounded us at every moment, being in such a vast and breathtaking place. We wish we could have stayed in Halstatt longer - so special. My third and biggest wow moment was the combination of Salzburg and Vienna, as I have been steeped in music my entire life."

The Germany, Switzerland Austria tour was every bit a worthwhile, fun experience that moved at a quick pace, covered a lot of ground in a short time, left no one out or behind and was filled with interesting places, historic facts and a taste of local culture and food dishes. Not to mention a lot of tasty local beverages!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many "wow" moments but I would like to say a word or several about François, our always friendly, always quick with clever witticisms (either that or he's developed a repertoire of such to match any moment) driver; and he can thread that huge bus through the eye of a needle. Wow!"

When we got to Hallstatt, we saw people in the air, and with Andrea's help, we were able to find a company to take us. It is something that I will never forget. Every aspect of the trip was wonderful. Hans and Aaron are to be commended for their excellent abilities to keep us happy travelers! Would have liked to have more time in Halstadt.

We had a wonderful experience. The trip itself was amazing ... Germany, Switzerland and Austria. But Hans made it so much more fun. Good group, good guides, good itinerary. Bad weather (rain 11 days of 14) made Murren especially less than desired. Too much time on the bus was tiresome, but that comes from so much territory covered. We usually read Rick's books closely and travel by ourselves. The tour showed us way more than we would alone, but we prefer slow travel and more of our own "back door" discovery. We like the sense of competence that comes from using public transportation on our own wake up schedule.

The tour was what I expected. Andrea was knowledgable . The bus was comfortable. Hotels were fine, except the hotel in Hallstatt. We had the top corner room and hit our head several times on the beam. There was this beautiful view and we had one window 3X3 on the side. The group dinner was awful and the waiters surely, front desk staff could boat accommodate a request.

What a whirlwind tour, 13 nights in 7 hotels, with lunch/site stops in-between. First of all we had an Outstanding tour director (Andrea) and Heidebloom driver (Patrick). Starting in Trier gave us the opportunity to arrive early into Frankfurt airport and spend two nights on the Rhine before traveling by train to Trier. Imho the Rhine should be the start point on this tour, then Trier. The tour itself was Outstanding cept a couple of minor hotel dinks below. All local Guides were Uber.

"Wow moments have two: 1) After arriving in Murren during a rainstorm the next morning opening our room curtains to reveal the glorious Jungfrau peak bathing in full sunlight as viewed from our little balcony on the third floor, an audible WOW came from within; and 2) Our balcony view from Haldtstatt (sic) over the lake for sunset complete with local wine and cheese, then again sunrise next morning with kaffe, truly a special place."

I absolutely loved this tour. Andrea is the perfect guide. She has a wealth of knowledge about the countries we visited. She is enthusiastic ,engaging and has a quick wit.She taught us about the economy ,politics ,culture and gave us language lessons to help pass the time on the bus. She also bought many treats for our group to share on the bus ride. Each country had its own charm and I loved each one for different reasons . The trip was a good mix of countryside and city visits.

"Wow moments would have to include riding bikes through the English Garden in Munich, listening to a band while drinking beer at the Victualmarket, sitting on balcony in Halstatt and walking the North Face trail in Murren. We also loved visiting cafés in Vienna for kafe and kuchen. Another highlight was visiting the Caracalla spas in Baden Baden and finding the courage to check out the nude spa upstairs. Really it was a ton of fun everyday."

This was our SIXTH RS Tour, and it did cover some areas we have previously visited, but we really wanted to get to Munich and all of Austria, so off we went on the GAS tour ! ! ! Hotels were typical, and very good, especially location, location, location. And, we love the to meet new "fellow travelers!" We received what we expected = QUALITY.

This trip is great balance of incredible natural beauty in Switzerland combined with great arts and culture at both small and large cities. We thoroughly enjoyed every portion of the trip. The guides were great at providing detailed interesting information on each location. Our only disappointment was that we'd have liked to have stayed an extra day both in Baden Baden and Halstadt. At one night on each of these locations, we didn't really have enough time to fully explore them.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The view from the Schilthorn where it was clear enough to see all 3 peaks. And beautiful hikes on each side of the valley, one through fields of incredible wild flowers and the other higher up on snow covered paths."

Very well planned and organized tour. The speed was just right for me. The split between guided tour and free time was well balanced. Our guide, Andrea, and our driver, Patrick, were outstanding in their professional skills and their friendliness. Compared against our other tour experience, we rate it as Very Good, only because we disagreed with certain routes and how we spend time in each locations. Murren, Hallstatt, and Vienna were the highlight. Baden-Baden did not fit well for me.

Favorite "WOW" moment

our 3rd RS tour and we expected it to equal the high level of the first two and it did. I had been to Germany and Switzerland before but Austria was new territory. Quite frankly, my travelling heart has always been in Italy and France and the GAS tour didn't raise my heart rate at all but DH wanted to go so off we went and, of course we enjoyed it immensely. Certainly helped that we had great weather, a good and helpful driver and, most importantly, a wonderful guide.

This was our first family trip (and Rick Steves tour) where we traveled to more than one country. So we felt it was a lot of movement. But we adapted. This was also our largest group (30) but it worked out well. Everyone was friendly and excited about the tour. There was the right amount of walking for each day.

This was our first tour and it was fun, well organized and provided a good mix of group and individual exploration. I think we were able to do much more than if we traveled alone because our guide provided insight to cultural differences and similarities. Our guide Daniela was wonderful about providing a variety of experiences and was great at finding various activities should the weather turn bad.

I was impressed with all aspects of the tour. I was impressed with the organization of everyday and how this organization led to each day being as good or better than advertised. The tour guide, Fabian, was the reason our tour was better than I expected. His knowledge, friendliness, concern and guidance in foreign places surpassed my expectations,

Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna provided valuable cultural experiences-all great! Hallstatt was relaxing and beautiful (right out of a painting).

I have loved every Rick tour I have been on, but the GAS tour takes the prize for straight up awesome scenery. The serene Mosel, interesting castles, stunning Alps, beautiful lakeside Hallstatt, picturesque and vibrant cities such as Munich, Salzburg and Vienna...pretty hard to beat. This was our third RS tour, and we just loved it. It was different from the other two (Best of Italy and Paris and Northern France) in that it wasn't as church and museum centered. Our guide, Fabian, is a PhD in history, so the history talks were amazing and informative. I was especially wary of these countries because of the Nazi history. I was so appreciative of the candor with which all our guides handled this. Scenery was amazing!

We loved this tour! There was not a moment wasted - and I feel we experienced the very best this region has to offer. Each place we visited, each hotel and each restaurant, were carefully screened, our tour guide was excellent, and there was something for everyone - whether you were a history buff, an art lover, a foodie, a beer seeker, a hiker, or a music lover. It was only two weeks, but it was life changing. The people on the tour were wonderful - not a single problem or complaint.

Fabian and Holger were very well organized, very knowledgable about history. The tour members were all very nice and great fun to spend time with. It was our first Rick Steves tour and exceeded my expectations. I can definitely see another tour in my future.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Swiss Alps. To open your hotel room window at Hotel Jungfrau and have the Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau peaks right in front of you! Wow. The staff at Hotel Jungrau was the best of all the hotels we stayed at."

The tour met or exceeded all my expectations. The preparation and execution by all the staff was superb.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was a toss up between Mürren and Hallstadt - both were exceptional. The 7,000 year old salt mines and the 1st to 3rd century Roman bath ruins in Hallstadt were really neat. The view of the Alps in Mürren was out of sight and our weather was just great! Trier was fascinating due to its old old history."

This was my first trip to Europe and the first time on a group tour. I was very impressed with the level of detail from the entire Rick Steves Tour group, from the pre-tour instructions to our final dinner together. There was a good ratio of group time and individual time to explore your own interests and there was a good mix of big city sites and quaint, small town excursions. I plan on taking another Rick Steves tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good value.

The GAS 14 day tour was fabulous! We had a bonus with 2 very knowledgable and courteous guides who led us on a variety of excursions providing insight and information at every turn. The local guides were excellent and the coach driver was a doll. When she got injured, the replacement filled in well. The group was delightful, the meals and treats yummy and the weather in the Alps was picture perfect! Loved it all!

outstanding (We were very fortunate with the weather and that always helps) Fabian and Holger were marvelous guides particularly enjoyed Fabian's skill at teaching history with a nice objectivity and nuance. Our group hit it off well and we enjoyed mingling for the whole 14 days. We were seeing bucket list sights of course and that was great. But otherwise I felt quite at home in these countries and in independent activities.

Fabian was absolutely fabulous in his guide duties. With his PHD in history from Stanford he was able to add terrific insight into the details of the places we visited and add vibrant backgrounds of the historic people that were in charge at the time. It was a great lesson in history. He has excellent speaking abilities and a pleasant personality as well. All of the hotels were very pleasant and well decorated. The meals exceeded my expectations and the bus was very clean and in top shape.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The tour was very well laid out and there were many "wow" moments for me. Each city and place we visited was in itself a "wow". The Alps in Murren are certainly high on the list as was the open air museum in the Black Forest. The Neuschwanstein castle was impressive and the town of Hallstatt was absolutely beautiful. The exquisite detail of both the interior and exterior of several of the churches was beyond comprehension considering the tools available to the people back then."

This tour was wonderful. No stone was left unturned. The attention to every detail was unbelievable. The choice of sights to see and the tour guides in each city were so knowledgeable. Fabian was the most knowledgeable and fun tour guide. His knowledge of history was outstanding. Our tour assistant, Holger, was also very knowledgeable and made the bus rides so enjoyable. They both did a great job. Also not to be forgotten was our bus driver who was unflappable and extremely nice.

The guide (Fabian Rueger) made this trip for me. Fabian's historical insights were concise, easy to understand and downright entertaining! Fabian was always ready to answer any individual questions about hotels, the best restaurants to visit on our free time, as well as shopping opportunities. Fabian's handling of our bus driver's cycling accident kept the tour on track -- we didn't miss a beat. Fabian was quick to credit the Rick Steves corporate team for their help in obtaining a backup.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The best wow moment for me was the tour of the Mauthausen Concentration camp. Fabian explained how Hitler came to power, the role of the Brownshirts, the SS, and the Gestapo. I now have a much better understanding of that period in German history. As a result, I also have a much better opinion of the German people as a whole and a better understanding of how a small, dedicated, fanatical group like the Nazi's can take over a country."

This was my second Rick Steves' tour and I am happy to report that, again, it far exceeded my expectations. Fabian and Holger were outstanding, extremely knowledegable and, of course, entertaining. The tour was well organized and informative. The coach was clean and comfortable and the driver(s) were timely and helpful. The excursions were interesting and well planned. The food was good, most of the time. The breakfasts were outstanding. Thanks again for a great experience!

This was my fourth Rick Steves' tour, and again it was an outstanding experience. The itinerary and quality of our guides made our travels memorable and very special.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every moment spent in the Swiss Alps was "WOW"! Murren, the Schilthorn,& Lauterbrunnen Valley were off-the-charts amazing. There are not enough superlatives to describe the overall experience. Perfect weather for excursion to the Schilthorn. Picnic hike from Murren to Gimmelwald, with carpets of spring wildflowers and vistas of the Alps, made a surreal experience. Walk through Lauterbrunnen Valley left a lasting impression. Alphorn and accordion artists in Murren, made a sublime finish."

Our guide Daniela and Assistant Matt were wonderful! The entire tour group of folks were great, so fun! No grumpies! Murren was beautiful with all the snow. Salzburg lovely. The Mozart concert at the Fortress perfect. Hallstatt Austria...oh my ...maybe the most beautiful place I have ever seen. The least wow was Trier...not a great place to start a wonderful tour...a retirement/assisted living facility for a hotel?? A little worn out from all the tours but very well organized.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My wow moment was going to the Schilthorn. It was a cloudy day and everyone said don't go but we did and it was awesome when the skies cleared. We enjoyed a lovely lunch and drinks. Toured the James Bond Museum...acted like 007!! Just a great time. We went again the next day with the group and it was clear so we enjoyed it twice! Don't miss this! Worth the money! Of course arriving in Murren to a snow storm was awesome too!!! Beautiful!!! Oh maybe the falls tour! So many wow moments!"

Seamless travel! Excited to see what the day would bring, every morning! The combination of well-orchestrated group activities and free time to roam was so appreciated; the contrast between big cities and world class museums, and small communities with special features was wonderful. Visiting Mauthausen and then experiencing Vienna with all its gold and dark glory was a valuable part of the trip, as were all the music and history lessons. Great conversations with locals and fellow tourists.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"After spending an additional 6 days in Vienna, we headed out from the Hotel Savoy to go to the airport; it was 6:30 a.m., and we ran across one of the maids and a caretaker from the hotel as we were about to enter the passage to the trains; we shook hands and wished each other well. It was the icing on the cake! Or was meeting the cellist on the plaza in Vienna, asking him if he'd play a waltz for the couple in our group who dreamed to waltz on the streets? He said yes & waltz they did!"

This was the best tour I have taken. It had the perfect balance of being guided on a tour, and the perfect balance of free time so that we could guide ourselves and go at our own pace. I also learned a lot about myself, and the tour changed some thoughts I had on things, which are also great to get from a tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"All 3 of our days in Switzerland was cloudy/snowy. On the morning we were leaving it was clear and sunny, our tour guide Daniela called an audible on our itinerary so we could go to the top of the Shilthorn. It was amazing and beautiful!"

I loved the tour, the weather was iffy but you have to be prepared for that. I loved the architecture and all the history of the area.Half my family comes from Bavaria so I was excited to see for myself. Overall I loved Hallstadt and Munich best, Hallstadt because of its sheer beauty and calm relaxing vibe and Munich for its young energy mixed with history. The food was really good at times I tasted my Grandmothers cooking,a little much meat for me normally, but when in Rome.....

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking solo around Munich and wandering into the cathedral to hear the full orchestra and choir practicing a Mozart piece, where it was meant to be played! It just blew my socks off,the sound was ethereal ........and this was practice? wow."

We--Mary Margaret and Dennis--have relied upon Rick Steves' books for occasional trips to Europe since 1995, and we greatly enjoyed our first Rick Steves tour in 2007 (of Italy). This one was equally wonderful despite the often gloomy and cold weather. The success of this trip was due in no small measure to our great tour guide, Fabian, and enjoyable, experienced travel companions.

Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Trier before your tour begins, use your Rick Steves' Germany guidebook to get oriented, try out a few words of German, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise (consider renting a bike and pedaling along the river; details in your guidebook or from any tourist office).

Here are some suggestions for sightseeing in Trier that we will not be doing as a group (see your guidebook for details): Archaeological Museum; Mosel boat cruise; Bishop's Museum, Amphitheater. Remember, we will tour nearby Burg Eltz Castle as a group.

Transportation

Most tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. We recommend talking to your travel agent about "open jaw" airline tickets (flying into and out of different cities).

Frankfurt International Airport (Frankfurt am Main) is the main airport in Germany — 110 miles from Trier. If you fly into Frankfurt am Main, you will then need to take a train from the airport to Trier, a 3-4 hour journey. Frankfurt Hahn airport is a smaller airport located just 40 miles from Trier, but it is only serviced by low-cost airlines, including RyanAir and Wizz Air. It takes an hour to go by bus from this airport to Trier. See www.flibco.com/hahn/morbach.htm for more information.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass. You can get a rough idea of costs from the above guide or from Rick Steves' Germany guidebook.

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as contact information for your first and last hotels in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425/608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Packing

While it is important to pack light, there are a few items we'd like you to consider including when packing for this tour. There are great opportunities to hike during our stays in Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland (weather permitting). While hiking boots are not necessary, we recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction. In addition, the tour also visits Baden-Baden, an area known for its hot springs, and swimsuits are optional at some of the baths so you may wish to pack a swimsuit and perhaps a lightweight microfiber towel.

For ideas on what to pack, check Rick's Packing List and our Women's Packing List.
