Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" get-together. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces – the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly-preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese Peninsula, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. From the end of the line, our bus will take us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains, where we'll enjoy a picnic dinner together under the pine trees. Sleep in or near Dimitsana (1 night). Train: 1 hr. Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to the relaxed seaside village of Kardamyli, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Kardamyli

Kardamyli is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. After making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically-set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the day is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. Those who want a workout can hike to the very top of the rock. You will be rewarded with sweeping Aegean views and a chance to explore the ruins of the Upper Town — a living museum of Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian history. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably-domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 15,000 togas. We'll learn about the roots of drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra. Tonight we'll share dinner together at the town's oldest taverna — prepared by the family, not a menu in sight — and sleep on Hydra (2 nights). Boat: ½ hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day and evening are free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hire a boat for the day, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hrs. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Activity Level

Our tours are physically active! It’s an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily...

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (several blocks possible) and up stairways to reach your hotel; then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. Travel on a bus without a toilet (rest stops every two hours).
  5. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  6. Walk up to the Acropolis (10 minutes of stairs to the base, then more stairs to the top).
  7. At the Ancient Delphi site, walk up and down a steep and slippery gravel-marble path.

The tour was fun, relaxing and educational. I got a good feeling for ancient Greece and a peak at the modern country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the Antikythera Mechanism in the National Archaeological Museum, as I have written a book about an unusual planetarium, which is to be published in June. The book included a chapter on the history of planetariums and all of the histories of planetariums I read started with the Antikythera Mechanism. Second was seeing the Corinth Canal, which was not even on the original itinerary."

Our trip was AWESOME!We had a great time;saw parts of Greece we wouldn't have found on our own;and were able to relax completely and leave the details of how, when and where to somebody else! It was a unique sort of feeling to awaken in a picturesque mountain town somewhere in Greece with only the vaguest idea of the name of the town and it's location. Our guide was obviously in love with his job- his enthusiasm and positive attitude were contagious. This was our first group tour but our last!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Being at the Parthenon and Temple of Athena were dreams come true for me. I have been practically bed-ridden with 11 spine surgeries in the last 15 years, and being able to keep up with the group and not feel disabled or handicapped was one of the best moments of my life. We had some free time after the Parthenon orientation tour, and I found myself praying and giving thanks at a site that had witnessed people doing so since before 480 BC!"

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow moment - from the rooftop of our restaurant (last dinner together), a view of the Parthenon all lit up. I, also, adored the ruins of Mystras, the bronze Corinthian helmet (Miltiades'?), the ruins of Mycenae, the honey in the Menalon Mountains, . . . Well, you get the picture!"

An orgy of ruins, antiquity & history, moderated by breathtaking scenery and great food. I actually liked Athens a lot more than your guide book led me to expect. It helped to get away from the tourist traps and into the world where real people shopped and hung out. The countryside was dramatically beautiful. The sense of economic frustration and despair, throughout the country, was truly sobering.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was unexpectedly moved by some of the most ancient cookware in the National Archeological Museum. Our local guide, Faye, did a fantastic job of helping us connect to the makers/users of the pottery, to appreciate their efforts to express themselves through the design of their everyday items. Also, the moussaka in Sparta was a seminal experience....the standard by which all eggplant dishes will forever be judged."

Part of a tour is the people you are with and I have to say we had a very amicable group to go along with our travel director Reid. We had been to Athens before and this trip allowed us to appreciate not just Athens but the overall culture and history of the Peloponnese.

The tour overall was outstanding. It was a very cohesive and cooperative group. Everyone helped each other out. There were no grumps, everyone was on time, and everyone was friendly. The food was very good and reflected the fact that Greek cooking is still homecooking and not really fancy or overly elaborate. The sites were very interesting, in particular the Greek Orthodox churches. We were able to get an over sense of the span of Greek culture and history, not just the classical era.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were no single "WOW" moments. However, I found the frescos in the Greek Orthodox churches most interesting, and we saw lots of churches. Unfortunately, most churches were in disrepair due to lack of funds for upkeep. Many churches were actually a "ruin" and their frescos are just deteriorating over time."

The trip went well beyond my expectations. Very well organized, great meals, rooms, schedule, 'can't think of a single moment that was negative in the 2 weeks. As an architect, I loved the history, culture and sites that were a part of each day....it was truly a crash-course on Greece, past and present. Colin provided a good, interesting, colorful discourse along with the music of Greece as we rolled along on the bus. All my books on Greece are now being reread with a new point of view.

Complete experience was beyond any possible expectation from the tour's itinerary to our guide, to our fellow travel mates, to the museums, ancient and historic sites and local guides, to the accommodations, to the meals, to the free time, EVERYTHING exceeded our wildest dreams! And thanks to a Rick Steves staff recommendation, Joy of Elizabeth Holmes Travel helped us with flights and pre and post hotel reservations.

We followed all aspects of the itinerary, meeting on Monday evening with Colin and enjoying the get acquainted session with other members. This was our third, there were others ranging from first to fourteenth. I was surprised to see somewhat low ratings for hotels I considered to be very fine. Greece is a big area with more than the Peloponnese Peninsula to explore. I would like to see an island Greece or perhaps adding something more north as well. All local guides were excellent.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Almost at any point from beginning to end. When in Olympia I got the urge to run on the field and I did. I am sixty-nine and I ran in the Olympics. Later, one night at dinner, a fellow tour member complimented me. That felt pretty good. I also get a lot from speaking the local language. Look, a three year old can speak his language-anywhere. So can I! All tongues are alike. Do it and get more out of your trip."

This was my first Rick Steves' tour and it certainly won't be my last. The orientation toward independent travel, no grumpiness, and ability to go with the flow attracts interesting, flexible, and friendly people. My group was amazing. We had many opportunities to travel off the grid and have experiences leading to a better understanding of the country, it's people, history, and culture. The balance between tour, travel, and free time was just right.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many. Seeing the Acropolis lit up at night while enjoying a last meal with great travel companions. Encountering villagers on a Sunday and entering their small churches. Sprinting at the original Olympic Stadium. Swimming at Kardamyli, Hydra, and Monemvasia. Hearing Greek music and watching native Greek dancers perform. Seeing the frescoes at Mystras. Walking in the steps of the Myceneans and seeing their spectacular tombs and artifacts. Taking the cog railway - oh, the scenery!"

"Disclaimer: 3 wks before the trip I had a case of flu (9 feverish days) that severely depleted my energy, then caught a 2nd flu-bug the 1st day of the tour that lasted 7-8 days, 1/2 the tour (though I did not miss any event). Since 2012 I have also toured Turkey, taught a month in China, toured India last year (3 wks), and comparatively, this tour lacked the exciting, exotic highlights. My husband chose Greece as a destination and I was along for the ride. I hadn't done much preparation ahead of the tour (other than packing and learning a few words of Greek) so I didn't have expectations other than to know that since we were on a Rick Steve's tour, we'd be in good hands. And we were! The sights were tremendous, the guides were great, the hotels were interesting, towns were fun, the meals were fantastic but mostly the group of people on this tour were just a lot of fun!

Favorite "WOW" moment

It was absolutely wonderful, and my husband and I have been passing on our praise for the tour to friends and family. I am not a historian, but now have a clearer understanding of the relationships between Greece and the Ottomans, Greece and the Italian city states over the centuries as well as the fragmented nature of the country practically till modern times.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My personal favorite moment was when we walked through the ruins of the ancient healing center of Epidavros, where we viewed private rooms, baths, entertainment and sports competition areas including the 17,000 seat amphitheatre. I heard the guide telling us that the doctors were at the front gate to make sure that the patients who were entering were not so sick that they might die,, and ruin the reputation of the center."

"After having been an athlete with degrees in physical education, visiting the ruins of Olympia and actually being able to visualize the importance of the olympics to the Greeks (before Romans) kind of raised the hair on my arms - even though I am a woman. Fabulous! The sites were great, the food was fantastic, and we got to travel with an amazing group of people. This tour was an incredible adventure. We not only visited some wonderful historic sites, we also saw some amazing natural sites and quaint villages. But, experiencing Greek food, culture and towns really made the trip special. Touring through the mountains and villages really helped us get a feel for the geography of the land and how it shaped the development of the country, its history and its culture. This tour really helped us appreciate and understand the Greek people and their land.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Each day had at least one wow moment. Even the bus ride through the mountains and villages was a WOW. Superb guide Colin . Pleasurable review of Greek history, current affairs, Greek character, often with wry humor. He presented attractive options for free time whether hiking or eating. Nice variety of other small towns, not of major historical importance, including gorgeous ports. Group melded by Colin.

Best lodging: Nafplio built into rock walls and entry through Venetian gate. Several hikes up steep hillsides for the view. Dinners in Hydra. Town of Delphi and walk to top, then stay in hotel clinging to hillside. How to choose? Impossible!"

I had SO much fun!I enjoyed everyone on the tour. It was fun getting to know people from different parts of our country. We liked dining with different combinations of people. Our guide, Colin, was amazing!! He was knowable in everything (or so it seemed). He was good at preparing us for what we were to see. All locations, whether it was for lunch, dinner, rest stops, final stops, were pretty and had a unique feel.

The tour was amazing. This was our first group tour/adventure and any worries that we had about traveling with others or about fitting in with the group were dismissed as soon as we gathered for introductions and walked to our first dinner together. The tour went very smoothly and was totally interesting as well as fun!

"The moment that actually brought tears to my eyes was at our last dinner together. Our guide Colin took us to an amazing restaurant several blocks from our hotel. After walking for quite awhile we entered a building with lots of stairs. We groaned and teased Colin about more stairs to climb! At the top of the stairs was a roof top restaurant with a view of the Acropolis and Parthenon. The view was amazing and then the lights suddenly turned on the Parthenon. It was magical."

Fabulous experience! We had followed Rick Steves' books while traveling in Europe many times before, but this was our first tour and we were pleasantly surprised. The tour exceeded all of our expectations. Our guide, David, was informative and fun from the get go. The tour group got to know each other the first week, and by the second week we were all friends. The local guides excelled professionally. The hotels were centrally located, and the food was so good!!

We have not participated previously in a guided tour, but decided to go with this tour because of the complexity of Greece's geography and the large number of sites we wanted to visit. The organization of this tour was generally excellent, and allowed us to experience not only the sites we desired to visit but also many aspects of Greek culture we would have missed on our own, especially meeting owners of so many excellent restaurants and friendly hotels and the superb guides.

"The theatre at Epidavros. I taught Greek drama for 30+ years as a college professor, and actually seeing this ancient theatre, a birth place of Western drama, was an astonishing thrill. (But swimming in Homer's "wine-dark sea" was a close second!)"

As a first time tour participant I have nothing to compare it to except travel on our own. This tour was exceptional. Our Tour boss, David made the trip very entertaining as well as educational. From details about the olive industry to the current Greek social environment we received a huge exposure to all things Greek we could not have experienced on our own. The venues, hotels, food, expert guides were second to none.. fantastic.

"There were lots of wow moments regarding tjhe sights. History, food etc. But I was impressed on the first day by the skill at which our tour director made our tour more enjoyable. He had the hotel move our breakfast up by 15 minutes avoiding the rush of another tour group staying at the hotel. Then the first guided tour that morning at the Acropolis in Athens he somehow got us into the area first. We were taken right up front. I have no idea how he did it."

A magical trip through a country which was quite different than I expected. I was taken with the mountainous terrain and winding roads. The scenery was captivating as we wove along the coastal roads. Fine mix of art, history, geography, culture of Greece from ancient times to the present. The tour covered a huge amount of material in the context of a very enjoyable trek through Athens and western Greece. Who knew Greece had such mountains? I loved the various towns and people of different walks of life. I was surprised by the large variety of landscapes in such a small country. Plus seeing the ancient sites was awesome. I will say that some hikes were challenging in the heat.

My goals were to see the ancient sites, visit a Greek island, and learn more about Greece and it's people. I achieved those goals and more. The extra surprise for me came in touring the Greek mountain areas and seeing how beautiful Greece is. Pre-tour I was a bit intimidated by the language, but English was spoken in so many areas, and I found it very accessible. I enjoyed interactions with Greek people who were friendly and helpful.

First tour with Rick Steves and would do it again in a heartbeat. Tour was amazingly organized. I so appreciated that we saw ruins, museums, historical sights...hit it hard & heavy for a few days then just in time when we needed it, a day off. Perfect timing. Accommodations were A+ and we fell in love with Voula at Hotel Vardia in Kardamili. We wanted to stay for a month. Fellow tour members: we were all "on the same page". What a wonderful group of people.

Found Greece to be harder than I thought it would be. Very helpful that you gave us ratings for walking difficulty. Greece asks you to climb! While I was physically ready, there were some demanding days. So many cities in Europe are lovely places. Athens is not. I was not prepared for the amount of graffiti everywhere and found it sad. Once we had more information on the country, its current financial state, etc, it made it easier to simply "be" there and enjoy the experience and the locals.

The tour was fantastic! In 14 days we covered the highlights of Greece from Ancient to Modern; from the big city (Athens) to the back roads, small towns, mountains, seas and islands of the Peloponnese. Our tour guide, Colin, was a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful leader and travel companion. The local tour guides at each major site helped bring history to life. While the tour pace was upbeat, it has a nice blend of group activities, free time to explore on your own, and relaxing respites.

Loved seeing all the places that have been major players in history and literature over the centuries. So much more meaningful when you're standing in the midst of so much history instead of sitting in a classroom struggling to stay awake. Also loved having several Greek "myths" dispelled, such as my impression that the country is comprised of whitewashed buildings with blue domes (hey, it's 70% mountainous, whaddya know!) and that hummus is a Greek dish.

"One, only one? Ergh. Cannot pick. The subtle points probably made the biggest impact, including the botanical walk in Kardamyli. And then there was that unknown dessert we bought at the bakery in Monemvasia; it turned out to be filled with chocolate mousse...."

Fabulous tour, fabulous guide, fabulous new friends. Oh, and we loved the country, too. We chose this tour because people we met on our Italian tour raved about this one. Now we know why, and we agree. It's a wonderful introduction to an under-considered country. In his programs and guidebook, Rick Steves talks about the famous Greek hospitality and it's evident every where you go.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Watching our Mystras guide, George, corral a boisterous middle school field trip and encourage them to decipher a fresco for all of us. With a few masterful questions, he opened their appreciation for the chapel as well as ours. It epitomized the RS experience, as other tours whizzed by ticking off the sites oblivious to what they were missing."

This tour was our second with Rick Steves - and another winner. An enthusiastic and knowledgable guide was in large part responsible for it being so enjoyable. David knows his history. He presented the country and its people with passion and respect. He also took care of our group, handling all the small details that cropped up with ease and good humor. He knew all the cities and towns well enough to suggest good places to eat, to shop, or just browse. We were never disappointed.

"Viewing the Parthenon with all the nightlights blazing was one of those rare travel moments, truly a stop and shake-your-head experience. The sitting itself is a wonder, and the sheer enormity of the structure boggles imagination. Also, the view of Athens from Mars Hill was beautiful. And another wowwwwwer."

The tour of Athens and Greece was everything and more than I thought it would be. The actual itinerary differs slightly from the itinerary on the web site which caused a bit of confusion, it might be a good idea to refresh the web site and tour book with the most recent itinerary. I was also disappointed that Rick Steves does not offer a Greek language book like for other languages. Also, the map included with the Athens tour book was disappoiting.

"The "Wow" moment of the tour for me was to learn more detail about the more recent history of Greece and its' struggles throughout history. It was interesting to see how the country has evolved from the ancient cities and countries we know and hear about to all the other struggles it has under gone through the current economic crisis."

This was a great tour, with a truly outstanding guide. David showed an exceptional commitment to making the tour enjoyable for everyone, and a deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Greece. Greece's "problems" turned out to be a total non-issue. The tour was very well balanced between historical sites, and laid back restful stops. The tour was the most physically demanding I have been on. There were many paths with slippery steps and random rocks. Most sites are on heights or mountains.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We were hooked from the start. A great balance of planned and free time. Excellent guides. Well organized. Greece was wonderful - the people are so nice. Even more beautiful and interesting than I expected. Excellent itinerary. Wonderful restaurants. What more could you want! We had been told that we would enjoy the group as well as the trip. As I organized my photos, I realized I had so many more pictures of our new friends than from past trips/tours.

Far beyond my expectations! This was my first Rick Steves tour and I must say: I am extremely impressed by the whole experience. The organization and the preparation were fine but, above all, the leader of this exploration: David Willett has proven to be just the perfect catalyst for a travel of discoveries and understanding. He is a great facilitator, extremely knowledgable, and attentive to the group as well as individual needs. His equanimity was remarkable.

We've used RS tour books extensively in our past travels through Europe, but this was our first time taking a RS tour. And while the books have proven to be great resources in our past travels, the guided tour with David elevated our travel experience to a whole new level. Single most important factor in making this an incredible experience was David, our tour leader. We can now say without reservation that this tour far exceeded all our expectations.

This was our first tour (ever) though we have traveled Europe many times on our own. Any anxieties we had were resolved when we met David and our fellow tour members the first evening. I think any future tour on our part will be difficult to match the excellence, efficiency, breadth of knowledge and interest, professionalism, empathy, humane nature, and competence of David. He is beyond first-rate. If he were to lead a tour of the moon we would seriously consider going!

"The national archeological museum in Athens is so full of real treasures that everything else we saw had to vie for second place. We had a fabulous time on our tour of Greece. The tour group meshed together very well. Our tour guide, David, was outstanding. Our bus driver, George, did an outstanding job on the narrow and twisty roads of Greece. The food in Greece is marvelous. Wherever we went, the food was fresh and delicious, not fancy and complicated.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many wow moments during the two weeks. However, when a shopkeeper's face lit up when I greeted or thanked him in Greek was very special. His response was a familiar "spera"."

David is an excellent guide. He is very knowledgeable about all facets of Greece, cultural, history, present day, mores, people. He also has a very entertaining and warming personality. I would highly recommend him as Tour Guide, and someone a person would like to have as a friend. The country itself, Greece, is a beautiful piece of Earth, certainly worth experiencing. I don't believe I have seen an Ocean or Sea with water clearer than that around Hydra, absolutely gorgeous. Eighth Tour.

This was our first Rick Steves Tour. It exceeded all of our expectations. I have used his guide books, and DVD's and wondered if a guided tour of Greece would be worth the expense. The answer is a resounding "yes"! We visited many of the sites common to many travelers, but, with the skillful pre visit preparation of our guide Colin, the use of local experts, and the "whisper systems" they employed, the experience was maximized. Then we were taken "off the beaten path". What a delight!

"We traveled in the Spring. Wildflowers everywhere. Sunshine and temperate weather. Snowcapped mountains and vibrant orange groves. Pleasant family run hotels, and taverns, offering menu's with family recipes. Great yogurt and honey. Feta cheese in Greek salads served family style. Our small group of 25 from all over the U.S., many were alumni travelers, easy to get to know and caring. Hydra stands out, as a place you hope will never join the 21st century, a place to which you'd like to return."

I consider this trip my best of the four Rick Steves tours I've taken. Greece is an area that really interests me and the trip melded well history-wise with two earlier Steves' trips to Turkey. I am so glad I took the earliest tour as the wildflowers and blooming trees were at their peak and high mountains still snow-capped. I had never realized Greece was so mountainous. The heat of later tours would really be an issue for me being used to the cooler climate of western WA.

Favorite "WOW" moment

I loved looking down on the valley floor covered with olive trees and snowy peaks in the background as we left Delphi town on the winding highway early in the morning with the Corinthian Gulf in the distance. And the Acropolis Museum was a highlight, great displays in an architecturally wonderful interesting bldg."

Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Sightseeing On Your Own

If you arrive in Athens before your tour begins, use Rick Steves' Greece: Athens & the Peloponnese guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Greek, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions for sightseeing in Athens that we do not do as a group: Goulandris Museum of Cycladic & Ancient Greek Art, Museum of Greek Folk Art, National Historical Museum, Benaki Museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus, National Gardens.

Transportation

Most tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

Athens is a hub for travel in southeastern Europe. For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

Packing

While it is important to pack light, we'd like you to consider including these items when packing for this tour. Greece is rocky and we recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction to help negotiate the paths and hills, and you may wish to pack a swimsuit, waterproof sandals and a lightweight microfiber towel.
