Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Spain

We'll gather at our Barcelona hotel around 5 p.m. for a "Welcome to Spain" get-together. Then we'll head out for an orientation paseo (stroll), including a look at the swirling, Modernista architecture of Antoni Gaudí along the "Block of Discord." We'll finish by getting acquainted over a tapas-style dinner together. Sleep in Barcelona (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Lively, Artistic Barcelona

This morning, we'll explore Barcelona's maze-like Gothic Quarter, from its Roman foundations to the spires of its candle-, relic- (and geese-!) strewn cathedral. Then we'll hop the subway to Gaudí's towering, dizzying Sagrada Família church. Afterwards you'll be free to experience more of this magnificent city on your own, from the Picasso Museum to Gaudí's playful Parc Güell. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Madrid and the Royal Palace

All aboard! After breakfast we'll take one of Europe's speediest trains (the AVE) to Madrid. Upon arrival, we'll enjoy a panoramic bus tour of this energetic city's major monuments and classy boulevards then meet our local guide for a tour through the sumptuously-decorated Royal Palace. With 2,000 rooms, acres of luxurious tapestries, and a king's ransom of chandeliers, this is truly one of the great palaces of Europe. Later we'll stroll the lively streets of our neighborhood and enjoy dinner together. Sleep in Madrid (3 nights). Train: 3 hrs. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Masterpieces of Madrid

This morning we'll take a walking tour from Madrid's bustling Puerta del Sol to its elegant Plaza Mayor. We'll also tour one of Europe's premier art museums — the masterpiece-packed Prado — where you'll see paintings by Velásquez, Goya, El Greco and others. Your afternoon and evening are free to visit the Reina Sofía, stroll through the majestic Retiro Gardens (Madrid's most popular park), and maybe even catch a performance of zarzuela, Spain's delightfully light opera. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: Day Trip to Segovia

We'll venture out of the city by bus, up to the history-rich town of Segovia and its beautifully-preserved Roman aqueduct. After a walking tour of the aqueduct and town, you'll have free time to wander and visit Segovia's medieval Alcázar fortress. We'll regroup this afternoon for lunch to savor a Segovian specialty together — roast suckling pig. We'll return to Madrid in time for you to enjoy dinner on your own. Bus: 3 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Historic Toledo

It's a short bus ride to Spain's old capital city of Toledo (and back in time about 500 years). We'll take a morning walking tour that includes Toledo's magnificent cathedral, the medieval Sinagoga del Tránsito and El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz at the Santo Tomé Chapel. This afternoon and evening you'll have plenty of free time to enjoy the winding streets and varied sights (and some of Spain's best shopping). Sleep in Toledo (1 night). Bus: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 7: La Mancha and Granada

Today we'll drive through windswept "Don Quixote country," stopping to sniff the saffron and admire a whitewashed windmill or two. Our destination is Granada, where we'll begin with a visit to the ornate tombs of world-changing Ferdinand and Isabella, who reigned over a new age of religious zeal at home and exploration of the "new" Americas. Then we'll head up the Albayzín hill for dinner together and enjoy a sunset view of tomorrow's treat — the Alhambra. Sleep in Granada (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Moorish Treasures of Granada

We'll spend our morning learning about Spain's Islamic legacy as we tour the sprawling palace and garden complex of the Alhambra with a local expert. This last and greatest of Europe's Moorish palaces will awe you with its grace and artistry. This afternoon and evening you'll be free to linger longer at the Alhambra, and make your own discoveries along the colorful streets and alleyways of Granada's Old Town. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Ronda

Today's destination is the hill town of Ronda, home to Spain's oldest bullring and its most breathtaking gorge. The afternoon and evening are yours to explore Ronda's Moorish and Mercadillo Quarters, linked together by the famous gravity-defying stone bridge (towering over the rubble of an earlier one that wasn't). Sleep in or near Ronda (1 night, groups may be split between two hotels). Bus: 3 hrs. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 10: Spain's Pueblos Blancos

Today we'll wind our way between the olive groves and whitewashed villages of Spain's Pueblos Blancos. We'll head into the countryside to visit an olive oil mill, where we'll sample the products and learn about Spain's traditional methods of producing its extra-virgin export. Then we'll press on to the quintessential hill town — Arcos de la Frontera — where we'll share dinner together and sleep (2 nights). Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Sherry and Horses

It's a short hop to Jerez de la Frontera where we'll learn the history of the town's specialty at a traditional sherry bodega (sampling the local product). Nearby we'll marvel at the prancing horses at an Andalusian horse farm, where we'll learn about these magnificent horses and their connection to the local culture. We'll return with time to enjoy a free afternoon and evening in lovely Arcos. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Sevilla's Barrio Santa Cruz

This morning we'll drive directly to Sevilla, Spain's most flamboyant and atmospheric city. We'll begin our visit with a guided tour that takes us to the famous Macarena (Weeping Virgin), through the narrow whitewashed lanes of the Barrio Santa Cruz, and ends with the world's largest Gothic cathedral. You'll have time to do more exploring on your own before we regroup tonight for a performance of sultry, swirling flamenco. Sleep in Sevilla (2 nights). Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 13: Sevilla's Royal Alcazar

We'll start today with a tour of the beautifully Moorish-style Alcázar palace, the Sevilla home of the Spanish Royal Family for the past 500 years. Afterward, you're free to walk in the footsteps of Carmen and Don Juan, linger in Sevilla's charming squares or stroll along the romantic Guadalquivir River. This evening we'll share travel memories and toast new friends at our final dinner together, capped off with a carriage ride through the streets of Sevilla. Salud! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Sevilla's airport is a bus or taxi ride away with easy connections throughout Europe. Alternately there is an AVE train to Madrid to continue your Iberian adventures on your own. Hasta luego!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

The tour overall was outstanding from the perspective that so many factors are involved. I haven't traveled with a tour in more than 20 years, and those were bicycle trips. So, for that reason I did not give question #1 outstanding for lack of experience. Your itinerary was chosen because it covered everything I wanted to see except the Mezquita in Cordoba. You covered so much more than I would have planned and these additions were really pleasant.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was deeply moved by La Sagrada Familia - the incredible insight and creativity of A. Gaudi was beyond my imagination. Ronda's (un)natural site above this gorge was unbelievable. We hiked down and around this town to take photos because the views were breathtaking. Also, very much enjoyed the local painter Joquin Peinado's museum."

Very well done. It was our first group tour and I was somewhat skeptical but found it very enjoyable and appreciated all the planning, travel and arrangements being done for us. If I could have had a personal documentary photographer (as Lap did) I could have immersed myself more in the the experience. But it was a great time. Well planned to meet the needs of various interests with some time to explore our individual predilections. Good Job!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As an architect, I was thrilled to explore the work of A. Gaudi in Barcelona. The experience of the Sagrada Familia was incredible - and the highlight of my trip. Triple WOW! I also really enjoyed the exhibits of his designs and construction techniques at other sites. Visits to small towns Arcos and Ronda were very rewarding."

We loved it (and we don't usually travel with tours). There was a good balance of city/museum/churches with countryside experiences. It was nice to not have to worry about transportation. We enjoyed the others in the group. We saw things and had experiences that we wouldn't have had on our own. Our bus driver was friendly and did a great job. We really enjoyed not having to tip everyone. That takes away a lot of stress and allows you to just sit back and enjoy the trip.

"How can you answer that!!? I was gasping every time I turned my head. But as far as the biggest "wow" moment. It would have been Sagrada Familia or Ronda(no matter what you hear, you can't be prepared for those). Or maybe it was Park Guell. Or probably the Mezquita (which we did on our own.) Like I said. How do you answer that?"

I was happy with the pace and variety of the tour. There was a good combination of major city, small city and rural experiences. The accommodations were excellent and strategically placed as promised. The guides were well informed and confident in their presentations. There were a few surprises along the way that were appreciated. Fellow travelers were fun and courteous. I liked the combination of arranged activities with the amount of free time we were given. There were a lot of little extras.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would like to list two: The Sagrada Familia was much larger and more grand than I had expected and coupled with the other Gaudi sites we visited it was unlike anything else we have every visited. The second would be Ronda; even though we experienced our coldest windiest day I loved the stunning views and photo opportunities as well as seeing those buildings perched on those ledges as they were."

The tour (overall) was lovely. Helen, the hotels, the local guides, the dinners, the optional spa experience, and the planned activities were wonderful. I put together two RS tours (Loire Valley 10/5 to 10/17) and Spain (10/20 - 11/2) and was glad to find the hotels in Spain to be more manageable then some of the hotels in rural France. Day 10 on the Spain tour was slow.

"There were several. Going through the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Eating roast sucking pig at Jose Maria and climbing the tower of the Alcazar in Segovia. Great tour. Well taken care of, good hotels, friendly service, lots of fantastic food and wine. Fascinating places to see with informed guides. Bus rides had well planned stops for coffee and sight seeing. A great balance of visiting art collections, large cities, small quaint towns, even nuns selling cookies. Rick Steve's tours really give you the flavor of the country.

Stellar! As many times as we have been to Europe we have never visited Spain. We have travelled on two Rick Steves tours and done lots on our own (with the help of those RS books)but this tour made us realize we need to get back to Spain to see more. We were able to see and experience so much in absolutely beautiful weather. I was struck by the cleanliness of Spain and the wonderful spirit of the people. Nygil was a most excellent guide, providing us with insights into Spain that were likely unique as an American who is now living and working in Spain. He set a positive and friendly tone for the trip and the participants ALL responded in like fashion. I feel that I have a much better understanding of the beauty and the history of Spain.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many, but perhaps being in the La Mancha at the time the saffron festival was just beginning, seeing a young woman patiently performing the tedious task of separating the stamens from the flowers, somewhat successfully drinking the wine offered from a perron, seeing the stark white windmills against a bright blue sky and then pouring cider in a long stream into a cup was somehow surprisingly a special time that was maybe not "wow", but certainly rich and meaningful."

This tour was an ideal combination of an outstanding guide, fun and congenial tour members, dramatic and varied architecture, delicious food and wine, a complex history(which I am still trying to learn more about), beautiful accommodations in the historic areas of cities, perfect weather...... Only more time would have improved this trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So hard to choose. Possibly it was the meal we had in Madrid at Prada Atopa. Or the breakfast in Salinas at Encarna's home. Or the surprise carriage ride to dinner in Seville. Or the Sagrada Familia. Or the Alhambra. Or being in Consuega at the beginning of the Saffron Festival...."

Best vacation ever. 3 weeks of perfect weather - 80 degrees Fahrenheit day and night and no rain. Nygil was awesome and we wanted to take him home with us. He also turned us on to several other activities that we really appreciated. Tour pacing was perfect - we saw everything we wanted to see in a relaxed manner. Great job on the "included" tour dinners! We are the type who would spend extra $ for better food and better wine every day, but we didn't have to.

This was an amazing experience. Weather was beautiful and our tour guide, Nygil was exceptional. Not only was he knowledgeable and amazingly sensitive to the entire group, his special "surprises" added enormously to the experience. I am now afraid to take another trip. I don't know how another one could match this experience. For those at Rick Steve's tours, Nygil was truly exceptional. He is a definite keeper.

"There were many but dinner across from the Alhambra was truly amazing. The aqueduct in Segovia was also a highlight for me. I have read about these amazing structures since I was a child, but to see it up close and its enormous size was truly a bucket list check off. The Sagrada Famalia was also amazing. I had seen pictures but to see the scale of this amazing building is breathtaking. In some respects, seeing if finished may be a downer."

This was the first time we participated in on an "organized" tour. We normally visit countries and places on our own and were not sure how we would adjust to a tour. If all tour leaders were like Nygil, I would have done a tour long ago. He was excellent - because he lives in Spain and was able to share so many small details and nuances that we normally wouldn't have known made the trip. In addition, his many "Nygil Surprises" added to the fun & appreciation of the country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the stop we made in the village of Salinas for a homemade breakfast by the local women. That was something we never could have done on our own and gave us insight into the "real" Spain. Even though we really don't know Spanish and she didn't speak much English we were able to communicate and enjoy the feel of our host's hospitality which was so very gracious. This is one of my fondest memories of the entire tour."

Nygil was best guide we have ever had and very informative and caring. The hotels were amazing and the right part Some scheduling was a little hard as the three hours meal were just before some left and the walk to the Flamico show in Seville seemed unnecessary as they had it right in our hotel and about the same quality. The guides were OK, but did not take time or stop for the best photos. The horse show was just a horse farm and not what is on the video. Go back to the show.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The 500 year old farm house hotel in the country outside Ronda. We loved seeing how the gentleman farmer lived and the beauty. The night dining with a view of the Alhambra was amazing and having local food and wine on the trip with Nygils expertise was an added bonus The bus and driver was good and being able to stretch out was helpful as we had seven hotels in two weeks. I would have liked to have heard more about the art and architecture and less on history."

Our trip was amazing from beginning to end. Our guide was outstanding, the planned tours and events were fascinating, and the constant "surprises" were delightful. One week after returning home, we signed up for another Rick Steves tour. I think that says it all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Spain was a succession of wow moments, many anticipated such as La Sagrada Familia, the Prado museum, and the Alhambra. But it was the unexpected wonderfulness of the town of Segovia that stands out. From that first breathtaking sight of the Roman aqueduct, to crossing the moat on a drawbridge as we entered the fairytale castle, to the amazing spectacle of carving our (dear little) suckling pig, Segovia provided the memories I keep replaying in my mind and sharing with friends."

Our guide, Javier, was great (and William too)! We visited many places that we would never have visited on our own. It was nice to have many afternoons free for seeing sites that we specifically wanted to visit (e.g., Picasso's Guernica in Madrid). We were able to meet new people in our tour group and all members got along well. This was our first Rick Steves tour, and it met and exceeded our expectations! Everything on the tour agenda happened, along with many delightful surprises. Our guides went out of their way to accommodate our diverse group, including a woman who had an accident early on and needed extra help as a result. Our group bonded well, and by the end of the tour, we had 24 new friends! We liked the mix of guided time and free time to explore on our own. The whole trip was just fabulous!

"It's hard to choose just one "Wow" moment: the dinner overlooking the Alhambra was amazing, as was the tour of the Alhambra the next day. Having breakfast with a Spanish family was a really special treat, and the visits to the bull raising farm and olive oil mill were truly wonderful. Another high point was an add-on--we were able to attend a cooking class in Seville and learn to make paella. In all these cases, I was impressed with the passion of the people we met."

This evaluation reflects the experiences of Jonathan and Melanie Lewis. We had a great time in Spain. As the only single person, I never felt uncomfortable or excluded. I just "hung out" with various couples and enjoyed chatting with our guide Agostin in my limited Spanish. I learned so much about the history[INVALID]the mix of Roman, Moorish, Spanish, Jewish cultures.

"There were so many. Each location had something special to offer. Barcelona impressed me a great deal because it was our first stop, and I had gotten there a couple of days ahead of the trip to explore on my own. I loved the architecture, the Gaudi influence, the energy of the city, with impromptu break dancing or music performances on Las Ramblas. I guess the most spectacular moments were in Granada[INVALID]our dinner in view of the Alhambra at night and our tour of it the next day."

We had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed our group, our itinerary, and our guide. This was our first group tour experience traveling (other than cruising) and we will never do it any other way again. Rick Steves Tours make sure we visited all the important sites, got us through lines quickly, included all entrance fees, so we weren't messing with that every day, and ensured us a great group experience with fellow travelers.

Another great experience with a Rick Steves tour. The tour cities, the pace, Jorge and the local guides were all great. This was my first Rick Steve's tour. The concept of free time on one's own is good if traveling with a friend/partner, or if there are a number of single travelers on the group as couples tend to do things on their own. In this particular group, there was only one single woman traveler. There was a single man traveler, but he tended to stay with a couple he knew on the tour. So I found it difficult to plan eve. dinners/activities 'cause everyone scattered during the free time in the p.m.

a. Our personal guide Jorge was awesome. His knowledge of history and current affairs was invaluable. b. The local guides were much appreciated. c. The tour was a marvelous overview of Spain, the modern vibrant culture of a society isolated during much of the 20th century plus the Spain that many of us visualized through either Hemingway or Michener and included the fascinating and troubled history of the country that had so much impact on our history and that of Europe. An extensive tour of Spain from Barcelona, through Madrid, all the way to Sevilla. The tour showed us the local customs, people, food and drink as well as the glorious sights. The trip was even better than I expected - and I expected it to be first-rate. The sites were wonderful, of course. Our trip leader, Helen, was terrific - incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, personable and a great sense of humor. Our trip mates were muy simpatico. The local guides were wonderful. The lodgings and meals were very good. It was a really good investment - you get a lot for your money - way more than we would have gotten on our own. Everything was fabulous!

We had a very enjoyable visit and saw things that we didn't expect, Horse show at the Stud farm, Olive oil facility tour, great White hill towns, getting lost in the Jewish area of Toledo, easy to do. Found the large cities uncomfortably crowded but understand it is what it is. The tour guide, Helen, was fantastic, in control and anticipating ALL events. BRAVO to her.

Spain in 14 Days was such an awesome introduction to Espana. We explored in depth the major attractions of the cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Seville while also enjoying the flavor of the rural countryside. Our fellow vacationers and tour guide came together over the course of two weeks into a well-oiled (extra virgin) machine...the group's unlimited enthusiasm and energy made the whole experience extraordinary. The tour was amazing and exceeded expectations in every way. Spain was a delightful surprise, our guide was excellent and all of the accommodations very lovely. I think the biggest thing that sets RS Tours apart from the rest are the many, many extras and local specialties. On this tour it seemed like every time we turned around we were enjoying extras from extra meals, treats from our guide to sample local delicacies and the champagne surprise on the romantic carriage ride the last night!

This is our first Rick Steves tour and our 7th trip to Europe. We've traveled in Europe on our own, but have mostly done AHI alumni tours and one Viking River cruise. We found our tour to Spain with Jorge Roman to be excellent in the pacing, the information, the locations of the hotels, the local guides etc. We were pleased with the amount of activities and also the free time we were allotted to explore on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were quite a few 'wow' moments including the Alhambra, the town of Ronda and the charming rural inn there, the gorgeous terrace room with an amazing view at Arco, and the horse carriage ride in Seville to the excellent restaurant. That was the night of my birthday, and Jorge surprised me at the 'farewell dinner' with a cake, candles, and singing. What a very special birthday that was!"

An outstanding experience! It was on-the-move as we covered a lot of ground in Spain. The trip was filled with activities and sights that taught us so much about the culture, the people, and the history while enjoying the company of a great group of people on the tour who were enthusiastic and ready to roll!! The tour guide, Jorge was the best (will write more about him later!), and the local guides were not only knowledgeable about their subject but their presentations were engaging and fun!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I am sure everyone must write something like there was no single "wow" moment - which is really true. What can one say about the Prado, Sagrada Familia, the Alhambra, etc.!! I would have to say my personal "wow" was to meet Loli in Salinas and have brunch at her house with a small group and be shown around her house. That personal experience meant a lot to me as it was a connection with a wonderful, gracious lady who happened to be Spanish (and didn't speak English!)"

My ancestors came from Spain in the 1600's so I have wanted to visit for a long time. This was our 9th Rick Steves' tour and while we enjoyed seeing the major sites, most of them were in the large cities, which is not our favorite place to travel. We knew this would be the case, but the attraction of seeing the Alhambra, Prado Museum and the Alcazar Palace etc. were worth going to the larger cities.

We enjoyed the fact that this was a very comprehensive tour of Spain, visiting both cities and some areas in the countryside. Our tour guide, Jorge was superb. He shared the history, culture and Spanish perspective in an engaging manner. Our site specific guides were also excellent, particularly our guide in Madrid who took us to the Prado and on a walking tour in the old section, and our guide in Sevilla.

Terrific - our 3rd RS tour and it met all our expectations and more. It is so much fun and more enriching to travel with a compatible group of people. Being able to travel and interact with friends, and with the leadership of a great guide are the key factors in these tours for me. I liked Barcelona the best. Fortunately we arrived 2 days early so we were able to see the Gaudi Casa Batllo and take a city bus tour. The walking tour of the Gothic quarter was not memorable. The Sagrada Familia was outstanding. Madrid was also good;h, I would rather have seen the other 2 art museums than the palace. Toledo was unimpressive; just another church and a synagogue. Thanks to Javier's hard work and experience, this tour just got better every day in every way. I enjoyed the tour very much. Spain was an interesting but different European country with a complex history. My wife and I have already taken the 21 Day Tour, Ireland, and Greece. The Spanish sites, whether Roman or Moorish or Christian, were amazing. Our tour group had nice people, good energy. The Spanish people were friendly and open, food good, and the weather not too hot, yet. I would recommend this RS tour to anyone interested in visiting Europe and Spain in particular.

Our guide was wonderful and informative, the pace of the trip was just right, and the group dynamics were terrific. I is a bit heavily weighted toward churches, but they can't be separated from all the history of Europe. The other activities, such as the visits to the olive oil mill, Andalusian horse farm, sherry bodega, etc. all made the churches worthwhile. I especially enjoyed the brunch with Salvatore (a local) in his home in Archidona, and getting to know him a bit was a real treat.

Another amazing Rick Steves adventure! The trip was well paced, with a good balance between big cities and smaller towns, art, culture, history. My favorite thing about a RS tour is the amount of information that is given, both during the local tours and on the bus, something we could never get traveling on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the Alhambra, both the tour through the palaces and the gardens and from the overlook at our dinner the night before, watching as the light changed on the palace from the setting sun. The tour was outstanding from start to finish, with excellent regular and local guides, about the right balance of programming and free time, and about the right amount of time in each city and town. The itinerary was good for a 14 day trip (travel/visit ratio)and the other tour-mates became good friends. Unfortunately you cannot advertise the surprises without giving them away but these make Rick Steve's tours special.

This being our fourth RS "Best Of" country tour, it completely met the high expectations we have come to know and love with the EBD organization. This particular tour was a bit different from the others in that it employed many more "local" guides along the way, which definitely served to the betterment of the experience. For first-timers to any country, it is hard to imagine any other tour company providing as much "bang for the buck" where the rubber meets the road on Europe's tourist trail.

I don't think this trip could have been better. Besides the variety and number of places we saw, a lot of thought went into how we saw them. For example, we visited the Alhambra in Grenada in several stages; first from the outside at a distance, then during dinner from a restaurant terrace, then lit up at night during a walk down from the restaurant and along the river, and then from a tour inside the next day, followed by free time for the gardens. We absorbed rather than saw the Alhambra.

We recently returned from two weeks in Spain with our wonderful guide Javier de las Casas, and a great group of new friends. We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Sightseeing On Your Own

If you arrive in Barcelona before your tour begins, use Rick Steves' Spain guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Spanish and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Many of Barcelona's sights are closed on Mondays. See your guidebook for more details. Confirm all sightseeing plans with any tourist information office.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Barcelona that we do not do as a group: La Boquería Market (closed Sundays), Picasso Museum (free admission Sunday afternoons; closed Mondays), Casa Milà, Catalan Art Museum (closed Mondays), Fundació Joan Miró (closed Mondays), Parc Güell (closed Mondays).

If you are interested in attending zarzuela, the Spanish light opera in Madrid, you may want to check the schedule and buy tickets before leaving home. More information can be found in Rick Steves' Spain guidebook; schedules and booking information are at http://teatrodelazarzuela.mcu.es.

Transportation

Most tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. We recommend talking to your travel agent about "open jaws" airline tickets (flying into and out of different cities). Barcelona and Sevilla both offer good transportation options, making additional travel before or after your tour quite easy.

The most direct option is to fly into Barcelona and home from Sevilla (which may require an overnight in Madrid or elsewhere within Europe). If you have extra time and flexibility, you might want to consider a round trip flight into and out of Madrid or Barcelona. This option will require either a train journey or low-cost flight from Sevilla and an additional overnight in the original city.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as contact information for your first and last hotels in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

If you are continuing on after your tour (especially to Portugal), we strongly suggest you research and consider booking your transportation before leaving home as last minute bus and air fares can vary greatly in price. If you do not book your post tour hotels or transportation in advance, be sure to make time at the start of the tour to make all your post tour travel needs.

For specific details about traveling elsewhere in Spain, please see Rick Steves' Spain guidebook. If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425/608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.
