This street is lined with cafés, crêperies, and inexpensive dining options.
La Chaumière is the best charcuterie (deli) in town; you'll find salads, quiches and prepared dishes to go (closed 13:00–15:00, Sun afternoons, and Mon; otherwise open until 19:30, on rue St. Jean across from Hôtel Churchill). The grocery store across the street has what you need to complete your picnic.
La Fringale is good for a simple, cheap meal on this pedestrian street (€9 salads, €14 menu, closed Wed, indoor and outdoor seating, 43 rue St. Jean, tel. 02 31 21 34 40).
Hôtel le Lion d'Or, where locals go for a special meal, has a big dining room that's hunting-lodge elegant and accustomed to foreigners (€36 and €46 menus, small portions, closed Mon).
La Coline d'Enzo is where discerning diners should go for nouvelle Norman cuisine at fair prices. The dining room is blue-gray modern, while appealing outside tables line the side street (menus from €22, closed Sun-Mon, 2 rue des Bouchers, tel. 02 31 92 03 01).
Near the Cathedral

Le Pommier has good variety of reasonable choices served with Bayeux's best ambience, inside or out (plats du jour-€11, menus from €15 but avoid the tripe and andouille — pig intestines, vegetarian menu €14, closed Tue–Wed, 38 rue des Cuisiniers, tel. 02 31 21 52 10).
Le Petit Normand, just below the cathedral, is young, cheap and popular with locals (menus from €17, daily, 21 rue Larcher, tel. 02 31 22 88 86).
