Eating in Mont St. Michel

Puffy omelettes (omelette montoise) are Mont St. Michel's specialty. Also look for mussels (best with crème fraîche) and seafood platters, locally-raised lamb (a saltwater-grass diet gives the meat a unique taste), and Muscadet wine (dry, cheap, and white). Several restaurants have outdoor seating with views along the ramparts walk, ideal when it's sunny (usually lunch only).

Restaurant le St. Michel is lighthearted, reasonable, family-friendly, and run by helpful Patricia (omelettes, mussels, and pasta, daily, check out the stone toilet, across from Hôtel du Mouton Blanc, tel. 02 33 60 14 37).

Hôtel la Vieille Auberge is good for lunch; try the moules à la crème fraîche (mussels with cream), omelettes, and seafood platter (closes at 19:00, no dinner service).

The supermarket, located on the mainland at the Hôtel Vert, has what you need for a romantic picnic. You can also buy sandwiches, salads, and drinks to go on the island. Picnic in the small park below the abbey, to the left as you look up at it.
