Eating in Arcos

Restaurante El Convento, wonderfully atmospheric and graciously run by Señora María Moreno-Moreno and her husband, Señor José Antonio Roldan, serves quality Andalusian cuisine in a dressy setting (generally daily 13:00–16:00 & 19:00–22:00, closed 1 rotating day a week — call to check, near parador at Marqués de Torresoto 7, reservations recommended, tel. 956-703-222). The hearty €24 menu of the day includes a fine house red wine and a glass of sherry with dessert. This is a good opportunity to dine on game.

The Parador has an expensive restaurant with a cliff-edge setting. Its €24 11-course sampler menu is an interesting option. A costly drink on the million-dollar-view terrace can be worth the price (lunch and dinner daily, on main square).

To eat more cheaply in the old town, try Restaurante San Marco, which offers a good €8 menu, or prowl the many tapas bars along the main drag (Calle Dean Espinosa). The típico Alcaraván serves barbecued pork chops (solo millo) under medieval vaults in what was the castle's dungeon (closed Mon, Calle Nueva 1).

Plaza España, in the lower new town, is lined with tapas bars and restaurants.
