Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 4 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Sleep in Paris.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Next we'll stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, named for the language you'd have heard on these streets if you'd walked them in the Middle Ages. Then you'll be set free for the afternoon to explore more of the city.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. After free time for lunch and exploration, we'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Paris.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk, we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This afternoon, we're off to visit Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre. With a smartphone in hand and the Rick Steves Audio Europe™ app, Rick's voice will guide you through the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 5: All Day at the Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet, or to zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Train: 1 hour. Sleep in Paris.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orsay Museum, home to the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art with works from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and beyond. Then you'll be free to visit the nearby Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and other fine works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Santé!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

Jerome was an excellent tour guide and the meals and experiences were all wonderful. In spite of the rain and chilly weather, we all carried on and got to know the lovely city of Paris. Overall tour experience for my family of 5 was Outstanding! We all rated the experience as "Unforgettable". We all would take another Rick Steve's Tour in a heartbeat and will definitely be repeat customers. From the Hotel de Londres Eiffel and all the staff, to our favorite tour guide Rolinka and all the 'pearls of wisdom', light-hearted humor and everyone we encountered going above and beyond we are so grateful and appreciative!

I loved so much about this experience! Not having to plan everything myself was HUGE. We learned so much and saw a wonderful variety of sights, while still having some time to explore on our own. Our guide showing us how to use the Metro system right at the beginning gave us the confidence to get out there and see as much as we could! And our group was such a nice bunch of individuals, they added to the experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I don't know how to pick a favorite. I loved the tours through the neighborhoods of Montmartre and Marais. The windows in St. Chapelle were incredible. Our guided tour through the Musee D'Orsay was definitely a highlight. Seeing really old chateaus still in use, and all the wonderful wrought iron and stone designs throughout the city. And of course the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomph were stunners!"

We had high expectations for this tour, and the experience actually exceeded those expectations. Start to finish, this tour was well worth the money. While we could have visited the iconic landmarks of Paris on our own, it was way better to be able to learn from the expertise of our guides.

The tour offered a fabulous introduction to Paris, and Rolinka, our tour guide, was entertaining, personable, and very knowledgeable. Our accommodations at Hotel de Londres Eiffel were also excellent, and the staff could not have been more helpful. I discovered, though, that I would probably do better on a self-guided tour where we had more autonomy, so there may be a Rick Steves self-guided tour in our future. But that's on me, and doesn't reflect on the tour we just completed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

C'est bon all the way! We've been Rick Steves fans for years, but discovering Paris with an amazing guide like Arnaud made the experience second to none. He was both fun and knowledgeable, but he also kept our group on schedule – allowing us to sink our teeth into so much of this magical city. We've had many adventures in Europe and plenty of them on our own, but going to France for the first time with a Rick Steves tour made all the difference.

Good balance between group tours/excursions and time I chose what to do with (for example a 3 hour food tour); charming hotel just a couple of blocks from the metro station; very experienced and knowledgeable guide; on our walking tours, I looked forward to the pastries our guide would surprise us with when we stopped for a few minutes

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Sainte-Chapelle -- you have to walk up a dark, narrow, winding staircase, your head is pointed down so you don't loose your step. Your last step takes you into the chapel and you lift your head up. And suddenly there is light again and many, many beautiful, colorful, stained class windows telling the story of the Bible...it is a marvel, how could it have possibly survived 10 centuries! Also, a tip -- consider taking a pair of opera glasses/binoculars to see the uppermost panels"

Loved Paris. I debated whether to plan this on my own or join the tour and I was glad I did. Nico showed us how to navigate public transportation which would not have been easy if you don't speak French. It was also nice that entry to all the major sights was included. "My favorite "wow" moment had to be day 5, the trip to the Palace. A short trip outside Paris brought us to the opulent Château de Versailles. The grandeur of the palace, with its lavish rooms and the Hall of Mirrors, was matched only by the beauty of its expansive gardens. It was overwhelmingly ornate and rich with history."

Marie was an excellent tour guide. We had a great time exploring the city and learning about its history, culture, and art. I appreciated all of the time we were given to explore on our own as well, which is one of the things I like most about RS tours. I was traveling with my wife, mother, and mother-in-law. Thanks to Marie, we all felt very comfortable navigating the city on our own, and it was fun to come back and share our adventures the group later on.

Certainly the tour hits all the spots one should see in Paris, but our guide Veronique helped us to really understand Parisian culture and history. She clearly understands adult learning styles and that we all came from various backgrounds and experiences. All the adjectives people use to describe Paris are so true - A Movable Feast, The City of Lights are just two and Rick Steves you have created a tour that highlights what makes Paris so special. This was my 11th tour and I enjoyed our superb guide, friendly tourmates and the lovely hotel in the convenient 7th arr. Everyday Paris offered up presents as we learned to use our Metro passes, savored delicious meals & used polite French phrases. This tour was a Christmas present to myself!

There are too many humans on Earth. And, very selfishly, apparently too many of them have the time and money to travel. I found the crush of humanity at museums, palaces, city streets, transportation, overwhelming. Of the three Rick Steves' tours we have been on, I most enjoyed the one that was primarily about experiencing a country's culture, geography, etc - Ireland (contrasted to "bucket list" Paris and Venice/Florence/Rome). Virginie's insight into French life was the highlight!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Versailles! I was resolved that I would not allocate too much personal approval to the excesses of The Sun King - Versailles, after all, is what happens when one spends lots and lots of (tax) money. The beauty of the palace (in addition to its scale), however, is undeniable and thus became a wow moment. "

Looking back over the week, we started with learning about the daily life of the Parisiennes, with background knowledge built up for us during walking tours of the city regions well known for their effect upon history. This was followed with museum visits, led by local experts in each area whose storytelling history presentations pulled everything we had experienced together for us.

"We found our tour hostess, Rolinka, to be a guide who is well versed on the life and history of Paris, a story teller who was also adept at keeping a group moving through public transportation. Arnaud Servignat is a terrific guide. He made the tour with his extensive knowledge and ability to provide a background on Paris's history. The local guides were also outstanding, especially those who took us through the Orsay museum. The Hotel Londres Eiffel was perfect. The welcoming staff and comfortable rooms were all a respite after a long day of walking. It was nice to have time off to do what we wanted whether shopping or seeing more sites. The group we were with were all engaged.

Our guide, Arnaut, was a great source of information, fun to listen to, & helpful - as were all the local guides. The hotel was one of the nicest I've ever stayed at, with a terrific staff. The tour covered everything I expected it to & then some. However, it turns out that a single city tour, without wine tastings, pasta making, and down time with the group is less to my liking than RS's "traveling" tours we've taken in the past. One more point to consider when choosing the next tour.

"Two things: 1) The "Iron Lady" in all her glory twinkling against the dark night sky above us as we floated along on the Siene. 2) Theall encompassing weight of history. The thought that most of what I saw, touched, walked on, and experienced has been seen, touched, and experienced by countless people through the centuries of Paris' existence."

Enjoyed the Hotel Londres Eiffel and staff. Virginie was an energetic, informative and charming guide. The other guides were very informative as well. Appreciate learning how to use the metro and bus systems. Learned so much and will return with confidence because of it. Have never been in a group tour and I look forward to doing it again. I greatly enjoyed the tour. The tour guide was helpful and well informed.I also enjoyed the group of people on the tour.I did have concerns about how the logistics of the tour were handled. The tour guide lead us to the sites and guided us through the tour. However, we were left to navigate our way back to the hotel on our own. While directions were provided, it was overwhelming, particularly initially to navigate our way via metro when it was completely unfamiliar to us.

Rick Steves tours are not for everyone and he freely admits this in the literature. But if you’re fit enough to keep up, you’ll get the real thing. The guides are truly the best! I could go on and on about our experiences with them but let’s just say when people really enjoy what they’re doing, it's contagious.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"That’s a tough question, there were so many. Seeing Van Gogh’s original artwork. Finding Jim Morrison. Walking up to the Mona Lisa. Riding the subways of Paris for the first time on our own. How about the rebuilding of Norte Dame. But probably the most fun was having lunch at an outside restaurant on Montmartre by ourselves just watching the day go by. An accordion player was playing on the street next to where we were seated. Our view looked over Paris. Pretty awesome. "

Our guide was caring, knowledgeable, organized, and wanted to make sure everyone's experience was the best it could be. The chosen activities/attractions were great, with the exception of the Louvre museum. I feel it can either be removed from the itinerary or a guide within the museum should be hired. It is so busy and huge in the Louvre that I felt rushed on my own. I like the perks the guide chose with her available budget.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Paris is amazing and being immersed in the culture, with the help of the tour going on neighborhood walks and picking local, non-touristy restaurants helped. It's hard to choose a "wow" moment, but I just love how old palaces, etc., are repurposed for museums and the like. The city is very clean and the people friendly, which really adds to a positive experience."

This week in Paris was fantastic. I give all credit to our wonderful guide Nico who gave his all to see that every day was filled with expert knowledge, support and his experience as we discovered a city I have long wished to see in more depth. Staying in one excellent hotel, visiting exciting locations, utilizing the great local guides, having lots of free time, "mastering" the Metro, being accompanied by an amazing group of fellow travelers and on-and-on the tour never failed to please.

Lots of walking and time on the ground in Paris, and mass transit like real Parisiennes. So many elements deserve an "Outstanding" rating, but the inclusion of a couple of items (Louvre and Versailles) that proved to be so crowded and rushed took the whole thing down a notch. If "Very, Very Good" was a choice, I'd go for that.

"The most memorable moment came completely unscheduled, but was a result of inspiration we got from Montmartre guide Chris. He told us about the street art and about an app to track pieces put up by "Invader". Later that day a father picking up his two kids from school saw my wife aiming her phone at one of the mosaics and they came up to talk with us about the app and showed off the 600+ captures the son had made. Our tour guide Claire was outstanding. Her enthusiasm and narrative during our walking tours brought the history come alive. The Rick Steves Best of Paris in 7 Tour days was a wonderful, outstanding, pleasurable experience! Everything was well planned out, coordinated and executed by a phenomenal Rick Steve Tour Guide Rolinka. With her guidance and knowledge about Paris myself and my family learned so much and got to experience the City of Lights in such an amazing way! Our overall experience was fabulous because of William. He was not just an amazing tour guide, he was an exceptional host. Kindness was his main ingredient throughout the entire tour. Everything he touched was a golden experience for us. I am so very grateful for his knowledge and care during our trip. The hotel was just perfect and the staff was amazing. Kindness, cleanliness and the comfort of having such a caring staff, (all staff), made our visit exceptional. All excursions were fabulous!

Fantastic introduction to Paris for first-timers. Loved staying so close to the Eiffel so that we could walk over at night for picnics and lights. Our tour guide Rolinka was incredible, helping us to better appreciate the art, architecture, history, culture, and people of Paris. For two introverts, the social aspect was sometimes intense, but the people on the tour were great. More diverse than I was expecting, with a huge range of ages, which made it nice.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We loved the d'Orsay museum, the I Love You Wall, the l'Orangerie, the Tuileries Garden, and the guided walk through Marais with Brad. We loved the food and wine. Often, our favorite part of a museum tour was stopping for lunch at the end and having a glass of wine in the museum cafe. We came away with a better appreciation of the French people, thanks largely to Rolinka. The whole Paris experience was a dream. "

This was our first RS tour and it far exceeded our expectations. Rolinka was our tour guide; she was lovely and amazing. She spent individual time with all group members and facilitated a wonderful group experience. On our visit to Sacre Coeur, Rolinka took us on a meandering walk through Montmartre that was fascinating. Our group was full of wonderful and interesting people. We developed warm relationships and really enjoyed their company for the week.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to pick one thing in particular, but I would say the hotel we stayed in and its location were a pleasant surprise. Having stayed in Paris hotels before, this was by far the nicest we've stayed in. The rooms were small (as expected for Paris) but well-appointed, and the staff was very pleasant and accommodating. The location was awesome as well, with tons of restaurants, patisserie and boulangerie shops within walking distance."

This tour was action packed, and exactly what I was hoping for. I learned a great deal about history, art, culture, food, and more. We experienced so much in one week-The walking tours of different areas of the city gave us insight into the past and present-day vibes. Our main guide, Rebecca, was amazing in every way. She showed us how to navigate and get around Paris with ease. She shared so much knowledge about all things French! What a fabulous tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

Our second RS Tour. This time was as great as our "Best of Italy" tour last year. This time we opted for a tour that stayed in one city. Our guide Rebecca was outstanding in explaining how to navigate the city. The hotel location was excellent, I find that to be a RS trait, always a great location. A great value, just add up all the hotel costs, museum and metro passes, the meals, the wonderful guides and the tour costs seem very little for the value of the services.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We enjoyed Montmartre with Chris. He managed to get us up the hill almost without effort, charming us with his stories. I would recommend the Montmartre Musee and Renoir's Garden for those who enjoy Impressionism. A truly magical place but not included on the tour. Go on your own, It's well worth it. You need to get your Eiffel tower reservations months in advance or walk up -always an option. A big Thanks to our guide Rebecca. Happy Travels."

This was our second tour and we were very happy with both. Rebecca iz an outstanding tour manager. She made everything fun and added her own creative and extra events such as a wine and cheese lecture and a ribbon celebration the last night of the tour which was delightful! The activities were varied and the special guides were excellent. Rebecca made it easy to learn the Metro system and used the “buddy” system to keep us together. The hotel was very nice and the staff was extremely helpful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My “wow” was the tour of the Musee d’Orsay. The guide gave a wonderful progression of the birth of impression from Millet to Van Gogh. And even though there many other visitors the it felt as though we were the only people there. She was ver knowledgeable as were the other specialized guides."

It's my first tour experience so I had nothing to compare it with But it went beyond my expectations in a very good way. First our tour guide Rolinka, she is a Paris specialist. The tour sites (museums, palaces, cathedrals, etc.) were great and the walk abouts in the different neighborhoods interesting. This tour was very different from other RS tours I have taken. Being in a single city for a whole week was a vast change for me. I was surprised at the extent of the "time on my own". Without the "bus time" of other tours, there is a lot more time in the day to be on your own. Getting to know the Paris metro was a game changer and really helped me see more of the city. Our guide was instrumental in helping me gain the confidence to explore Paris on my own.

When To Go & Weather

Paris is a vibrant city to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Visiting between November and March, the weather is colder and wetter, but the city still feels lively and has the benefit of being less touristy.
