    Conwy Castle

Charming Conwy — with its appealing B&Bs and restaurants, a fun-to-explore townscape within mighty walls, and manageable connections to many nearby sights — is the best home base from which to explore North Wales. Hovering in the mist as a mysterious reminder of the country's hard-fought history, this garrison town and its mighty castle were built in the 1280s to give Edward I of England a toehold in Wales. What's left today are the best medieval walls in Britain, surrounding a humble town, crowned by the bleak and barren hulk of a castle that was awesome in its day (and still is).
