Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Prague

We'll meet in our hotel at 4 p.m. to get acquainted and go over the week's schedule. Then we'll take an orientation walk through our Old Town neighborhood and over the historic Charles Bridge — one of Europe's most entertaining promenades — followed by a hearty dinner together accompanied by the Prague Castle Orchestra. Sleep in Prague (4 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Prague of Kings and Nobles

This morning we'll hop on a local tram to take us across the Vltava River and up the hill to the most massive castle complex in continental Europe: Prague Castle. We'll tour the impressive St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica (when available), and the Golden Lane. To see for ourselves whether Prague really is home to the best beers in Europe, we'll walk to the Strahov Monastery's brewery for a refreshing mug and lunch together. Then you're on your own to wander back down to the Old Town, where you'll be free for the evening. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Jewish and Art Nouveau Prague

Today we'll take a walking tour through the Josefov neighborhood, once the site of Prague's Jewish Ghetto — and still one of the most evocative Jewish districts in all of Europe. For a thousand years one of the leading centers of Judaism, the neighborhood is studded with thought-provoking museums, fascinating synagogues, and a Kafkaesque, dream-like cemetery. After free time for lunch, we'll take a tour of the classy concert halls and salons of the city's Municipal House (when available), and continue our Art Nouveau education at a museum devoted to the local master: Alfons Mucha (whose stained glass you will have already admired inside St. Vitus Cathedral). Your evening will be free for dinner on your own. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Revolutionary Prague

We'll start our day with tales of Prague's past struggles with communist occupation, the significance of the Prague Spring and the emergence of Václav Havel. We'll then retrace the footsteps of Prague's celebrated Velvet Revolution, following the events of November 17, 1989, through the modern city to Wenceslas Square, where thousands of Czechs held up and rattled their keys, telling their communist leaders, "The time has come for you to go home." We'll return to the present in time to enjoy dinner together and catch a cultural performance, perhaps a classical concert or experience the quirky and uniquely Czech, Black Light Theater. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: On to Budapest

This morning we'll board our coach for the drive to Budapest. En route we'll pass through the rolling hills of ancient Moravia and modern Slovakia, catching our first glimpse of the wide, blue Danube as we approach the capital city that straddles both banks of the river. Upon arrival this afternoon, we'll meet with a local guide for a tour of Pest, the larger, more sprawling half of the city. There we'll crane our necks beside Europe's largest, most ornate parliament building to learn how Hungarians coped with half a century of fascist and communist tyranny. And outside St. István's elaborate basilica we'll learn why, once a year, locals parade the saint's millennium-old fist around the city. At the end of our walk, we'll treat ourselves to a Hungarian feast together. Sleep in Budapest (3 nights). Bus: 7 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Bustling Budapest

Our day begins atop Buda's proud Castle Hill with an introduction to Budapest's greatest church: the sumptuously gilded Matthias Church. The nearby Fisherman's Bastions provide a perfect bird's eye view of "twin city" Pest across the river and a glimpse of our next destination – a traditional Hungarian cooking class and lunch. This afternoon you're free to sample more of the city, including more delicacies in its Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok). Later tonight we'll regroup and relax with a cruise along the Danube. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 7: Elegance of Empire

This morning we'll tour the caked-in-splendor home of the Hungarian State Opera. Built in the 1880s, when Budapest was co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Hungarians took every opportunity to make their opera house more opulent than anything the Viennese could muster. You'll see they succeeded. Then we'll ride on the oldest metro in continental Europe, on our way to Heroes' Square to see and learn about the bronze-cast, larger-than-life players in Hungary's national story. This afternoon your guide will be happy to arrange a chance to soak in the ornate public thermal baths (yes, you'll have plenty of time to soak it all in!). Tonight we'll rendezvous for a farewell dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Egészségedre! No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Budapest's Ferenc Liszt Airport and three busy train stations can connect you to practically anywhere in Europe, and your return home. Whatever your plans, your guide will help you get on the right track. Viszontlátásra!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Prague & Budapest in 8 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to four hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

Prague was an exceptional experience. Combined the historical highlights (my particular interest) with a great deal of information about the transition from communism. The personal stories of our local guide in Prague (Angela(?)) were particularly illuminating. Too bad it was so hot. Budapest was also great, but a different kind of experience. Monica did such a great job of teaching us how to use the public transportation system that we felt comfortable taking off on our own.

The tour met my expectations as far as seeing the major sites in Prague and Budapest. I was not that impressed with some of the group restaurant choices, nor the bus ride from Prague to Budapest. We ran into a huge traffic problem and the trip took us well over 8 hours. Perhaps using the train would be a better solution. I was also disappointed in the hotels as they were crowded with other tour groups. Would have preferred to stay at a local mom and pop place.

As always our guides, both Anna and our city guides Vera and George, were just outstanding. It is the reason I sign up for your tours. They add so much to the experience and make it much more meaningful. The choice of emphasis in each city was helpful and the pacing was perfect, with enough free time to revisit or find other areas of interest. A little more information on the art of the city would be helpful with a summary of the museums quickly presented...overall a great use of time.

This was our second tour with Rick Steves and true to his reputation it was outstanding. All of the tour guides were exceptional, from their knowledge of history and lore to the details of place and time. Coming from the US the history and architecture of Europe is so much more varied and fascinating, the details of which were highlighted by our guides. I truely enjoyed the whole experience.

It was an excellent tour, which is typical for your company. We arrived late due to missing a flight connection and didn't attend the initial meeting at the hotel or the welcome dinner. Anna was very thoughtful and brought our meal in "to go" boxes to the hotel. It was nice to have something good to eat at midnight after a day of frustrating air travel. She also wrote sweet letter telling us how to reach her if needed. Prague was interesting but is definitely getting overcrowded with tourists.

The tour was amazing. I felt like we did just about everything I would have wanted to. Anna (our guide) was wonderful. I am convinced she turns into wonderwoman when a signal is sent out. If I had to give constructive criticism I would say that the hotel arrangements were kind of tough. The outside noise (prague) was loud and went on until at least 5 am. The air in the room did not work so we had to leave the windows open. we did ask the hotel as well as anna and the hotel was never able to fix

The tour was well organized, with great attention to 'local flavor'. Also a bonus was the local Guide for Prague and our guide was exceptional in his attention and knowledge. There was enough free time to explore as well. Katerina was a fantastic guide providing insight into the history and culture of the area. Her stories regarding living through communism and post communism really enhanced the tour. Katerina was also very thoughtful and personable, and had great relationships with restaurants and area musicians. This was a great tour however did not compare to the RS tour I took last year. Our guide and tour group were great. The land was beautiful but way too crowded for me. I know the crowds of tourists is no fault of RS, just made it less enjoyable for me.

Everything was very fine. Both the overall guide Peter and Prague local guide Jana was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, and real assets to the tour. The locales were both wonderful. The hotels were just fine. The food was very good (although not as good as in Spain or Italy - but that's a matter of local cuisine).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Despite the dismissive review in the Rick Steve guidebook, we visited the Convent of St. Agnes and the Medieval Art Museum that it houses in Prague and thought it was just wonderful. The restaurant was outstanding - and the fruit dumping we had there - potato dough around plums (could be other fruit), boiled, and then served with melted butter, poppyseed and powdered sugar was just as delicious as the ones my Czech grandmother used to make. And we couldn't find them anywhere else in Prague."

Overall tour experience was great. It's my third tour and it met my level of expectations. A few of the meals on the group dinners were a little disappointing, but I understand the complexitites of feeding a group. The atmopshere and companionship still made it an overall pleasant dinner. Very happy with our guide local guide and Peter. Peter is so positive he really helped make the trip special. Love the mix of tour time and our own time. It's a good balance. This was our first Rick Steves tour, and we loved it! Definitely looking forward to our next one now. Really wished we'd had at least another day or two in each city, but now I have a reason to go back. A nice balance of planned group activities and free time to explore on our own. A lot of walking on this tour, but that was a good way to burn off all the hearty food (and beer)! We were surprised at how widely English was spoken, so language was not a barrier.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many to choose! The sense of history in Prague, the sheer size and impressiveness of St. Vitus Cathedral, the beauty of Budapest at night from the Danube were all "wow". Also, the private concert at the Smetana Museum on our last night in Prague, and the Hungarian cooking class (and the food we made and then ate for lunch) made lasting memories. Actually, the whole trip was one big wow!"

Excellent balance of touring and free time. Our guides, Peter and Jana were outstanding and provided deep knowledge, context and personal storytelling to enrich the entire experience. Appreciated the way the days were broken out by location, history. The enrichment components (Prague opera presentation, Budapest cooking class, etc.) were excellent additions.

"Throughout the tour, due to the excellent guides, the complex history of Central Europe resonated. A "wow" moment was in Budapest when Peter described how Hungary continues to swap out statutes and rewrite its history to wipe out its complicity in both the Nazi and Communist phases of the country's past. This was further detailed in the Terror Museum."

Overall, we had a great experience. You folks really know what you are doing. The guides, George and Martin, were the best. The pacing was just right. We liked doing some guided tours in the am and then on our own in the PM to explore. I really appreciated the orientations to the cities and public transportation. The handsets contributed a lot to the experience because you never had to worry about getting lost or separated from the guide and could focus on the story or the surroundings.

I enjoyed being in a part of the world that I never thought I'd see. Doing the tour provided us with information we would not have gotten otherwise. I liked that we were taken to and told about certain areas and then had time, later on, to go back if we wanted. Everyone in the group were very friendly and easy to get along with. This was my first tour experience, and it was amazing. We (my wife and I) had no difficulty in signing up for the tour. The process was easy to follow. The hotels, meals, and other logistics were organized and "as advertised". The tour agenda was full everyday, but "free time" was built into the tour experience. We had plenty of time to explore on our own. Also as advertised, this is an intense physical tour. Lots of walking on uneven terrain, as well as climbing many, many stairs.

It was wonderful to have two Budapest natives show us the city they love. Our time was shortened a bit so the beginning of the city tour had to be condensed. Elsemer had a lot to tell us in a short period of time so it was hard to digest all of the information. George and Monika were both energetic, informative and enthusiastic. They shared practical information on travelling in Budapest (George's advice on money changing is something I will use wherever I travel).

I had previously gone on Madrid/Spain and Sicily. This Prague/Budapest tour was not as good. Reasons may include (1) Prague/Budapest had the largest group size and least cohesive, (2) there was less personal interest and interaction w/the tour guide, perhaps because of group size, perhaps for other reasons, (3) I suspect Prague/Budapest are more bleak than the Madrid/Spain and Sicily venues. Prague was crowded with tourists, many young, and it felt like Ft Lauderdale on Spring Break.

I was awed by what we saw and learned, humbled by the glimpses into the past, deeply touched by the warmth of the locals and their willingness to share their lives with us, enthralled with their stories and inspired by their talents. I was moved to tears by the performances we experienced in a private group setting. And of course, my belly was always full!

The tour was fantastic. This was our second Rick Steves' tour and we will continue to take others. The ability to feel a part of a very small group and get the guided aspect we look for combined with a lot of free time to explore and become an independent traveler is second to none. The information was fascinating and our guides did a fantastic job!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have a few, but one in particular was the musicians that came to our restaurant on the first night of the tour. They were fantastic. The following day we were touring the Prague Castle complex and we bumped into the same musicians performing on the street. It was so magical to witness such authenticity. This is really their job and they performed for us privately. I can't really describe it because it seems mundane, but it was very neat to have that connection to a local in that way."

After years of looking forward to Prague it was a disappointment as it is one big ash tray and so crowded that much of the atmosphere is lost. Early morning walks were a joy. History and music are everywhere and we certainly enjoyed those to the fullest. Prague has some outstanding restaurants. Hotel location excellent Budapest met and exceeded expectations - our 2nd trip. Getting inside some of the places we had only glimpsed previously made the day. River cruise was lovely.

This was our second tour with Rick Steves and it absolutely met our expectations for an exciting and stimulating vacation. Enjoyed our fellow tour members, our tour guide and the city guides - as well as the mix of group tours and free time for individual city exploration.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The absolute "wows" were the city tours with the local guides in both Budapest and Prague. Both guides shared their amazing knowledge of their city's history, architecture and culture. Especially appreciated their discussions - and personal experiences/opinions - related to more recent history including World War II and rise and fall of communism. Another "wow" t was the opportunity to experience live music /opera on two occasions in Prague."

I wasn't sure about doing a tour before I signed up, and I am so glad I took the risk. I have always loved the guidebooks that Rick Steves publishes and wanted to try the tours. The experience was incredible. I enjoyed having Eszter as our guide, the local guides were great, and the hotels were nice. The various surprises that Eszter built in were also super fun and always well timed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I struggle naming just one. I absolutely loved Budapest and the thermal baths. I loved how our guides were so open and willing to share about growing up during communism it's hard to fathom what that would have been like coming from the USA and they helped bring it to reality, gave perspective, and didn't hammer it to pieces. The people in the tour with us. We all got along and I loved hanging out and exploring new places in the world that were like minded and and hear their journeys."

I enjoyed this tour so much more than i thought i would. I chose it because i wanted a trip that would adjoin the Adriatic tour, and the timing of this trip fit perfectly. The tour guides and my fellow travelers were wonderful and i really enjoyed them. Prague and Budapest were beautiful, Prague especially. I really wanted to understand life under communism, and the museums in these cities gave me a better awareness of that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite Prague moments were things i did outside of the tour: rowing on the Vltava, touring through the Museum of Alchemy and hanging in the Golem garden of the Hastal Prague hotel. In Budapest, it was the time spent at the thermal baths -- i swam laps and played in all of the pools."

Overall my experience was such that I have been praising Steves' tours as a preamble to all conversations I have about the trip. Specifically all the guides and their activities organized were outstanding. Looking back I am amazed by the variety of experiences provided by the tour. Cooking classes, opera arias, boat trips, engagement parties, night clubs; it just kept coming on. I want to do it again!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My 'wow' moments tend to be very small and singular. Eszter impressed me when she put together a list of Czech and Hungarian authors with their book titles and directors with their movie titles. This led me to a bookstore in Budapest where I had a fine conversation with a young clerk who had a broad knowledge of Slavic literature of which I had very little knowledge myself. Since returning home I have been working my way through a foot deep pile of books. Thank you Eszter"

I had an amazing time on my tour. I felt there was a good amount of free time to balance with the tour. I was able to see the best of both Prague and Budapest in the short time span of 8 days. This was my first Rick Steves tour, and I am happy to say it will not be my last. The attention given to each detail by the tour organizers and guides was obvious - from pointing out spots of local interest during free time (according to interests of group members) to dietary needs and room comfort - I felt very well taken care of. As a solo traveller I was concerned about being solo the entire time, but the buddy checks and quick camaraderie of our group erased that concern within minutes.

Honza is a marvelous guide! We had a packed tour that gave us a complete overview of the culture of both Prague and Budapest. His tips on places to eat were spot on, and the meals with the tour were an excellent variety. His personal stories of growing up in Prague were captivating and added depth to the sights we were seeing.

This was our Eight tour and it again more than met our expectations. Good people, great tour guide, and memorable moments. Honza's personal perspective and obvious intellect made for a great combination. I was vastly ignorant of the all by the rudimentary history of these countries and although I should have retained more, I do feel better informed. I was struck by the resilience of the people in face of their struggles to again and again gain some level of a democratic government only it fail.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably Honza's narrative and walk of the same path he took with his sister in the 1989 Velvet Revolution and his humble and honest approach to his own role. I also appreciated the opportunity to attend an opera at the Prague National Opera House and the concert by a very talented musician in the Franz Listz Academy in Budapest. While not a a "Wow" moment the children's WW2 drawings WW2 in the the Budapest Ghetto and now displayed in The Budapest Holocaust Memorial were very moving."

This was another of our three-generation tours with my husband and myself, our daughter and her husband, and our two adult grandchildren -- and we all had a grand time! I would begin by saying that the tour far exceeded my expectations. I describe it to friends as follows: "It's like taking a semester course in Eastern European History in just 8 days". That's how it felt for me. The hotels were great and their locations were perfect. The choice of tour guides for both Prague and Budapest simply could not have been better. Their personal stories, and the way they were able to convey them, will resonate with me for years to come.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It would be too easy to say it was the "private" Opera performance on the steps of the Budapest Opera House - and that was a definite punctuation mark. That said, the more "wow" moments for me were hearing the description of Honza's participation in the "Velvet Revolution" during our walking tour through Prague and Elemer's very calm explanation of his resistance during the Communist occupation of Budapest. We have relied on Rick Steve's books for past European travel, but decided to try this tour due to concerns about language barriers and getting around in these cities. The Prague/Budapest tour far exceeded my expectations. The tour guides were so knowledgeable and engaging that they were worth the entire cost of the tour. We have always traveled on our own so traveling in a group was a concern, but the group was made up of very interesting and fun people. The tour also provided a good deal of unscheduled time so there wasn't a sense of being "herded" around. The group got along very well which added to the experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think the biggest impact of the tour for me was the living political history, provided for the most part by our guides. Their willingness to share personal experiences, especially of life under the Soviets, and World War history leading up to that, made me realize how recent and relevant are things that before the tour were faraway pieces of information in a book or newspaper. I had been prepared primarily for the physical beauty of the places (and the good Czech beer thanks to Rick S.)."

Was an exceptional trip of a fascinating and breathtakingly beautiful part of Europe. So much history here and the architecture Is stunning! We especially loved getting a real flavor of the culture through staying at local hotels, eating at neighborhood coffee houses and riding the local transportation,

"We enjoyed two phenomenal concerts in Prague. One at the Clementinum Cathedral, Mirror Chapel. The Baroque music was fantastic and that combined with the absolute beauty of the chapel was beyond words! The other was a private concert just for our group of three musicians...two opera singers and a pianist performed at Klub Lavka. Exceptional! Also loved the Hungarian cooking class and thermal baths. Special experiences that were unique to the area."

This was my first group tour. The Rick Steves' philosophy of travel drew me in. As a solo traveler, I found our group to be welcoming. I was delighted that Peter was our guide and local guide for Budapest. He was Great as our overall guide and an Amazing local guide for Budapest. I have had the opportunity to hire excellent guides in the past and Peter is now included in this group. His passion for Budapest could be felt by the whole group.

Our tour guide Katka, was amazingly wonderful. She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. Katka has a fantastic grip on history and brought everything to life in a way that made our visit unforgetable. She was, for me, the high light of the trip. Our overall experience was really good. Our guide, Katka, was beyond excellent! Her stories of growing up under Communism and of her family, then and now, added wonderful personal, historical and cultural insight. Great city guides added depth. Our group was delightful! Even at 25 or so people, we moved about briskly and did not seem to encumber ourselves or others. Good balance of structure versus free time. Generally, I'm an independent traveler, but am so happy to have chosen this tour. Won't be my last!

From our first meeting in Prague, Katerina made us feel like old friends. She was warm, caring and professional. She set the mood for everyone to feel comfortable. All guides were a wealth of information on the history and culture of both Czech Republic and Hungary. Mix of formal tours and "down time" was good. But we could have had another day in Budapest...felt a little rushed. Partly due to our drive from Prague being way longer than expected...road construction?

It was fabulous! The whole trip went very well, and exceeded my expectations in many regards. Our walking tours hit all the highlights I wanted, the introduction to the public transit systems had us riding around like the locals, and our guide Katka's attention to details made the whole trip run smoothly. On our first RS tour, I appreciated the obvious Rick Steves organization and attention to detail. Our fellow group members were fun and respectful. Excellent choices of what to see and where to go in both Prague and Budapest. We were the oldest on the tour (69) and the walking was definitely strenuous but not overwhelming. Could have you used baths instead of showers to soak our weary legs! The tour-provided meals were only mediocre. RS let us maximize our 7 days in these two cities.

"I loved the two very different evening musical experiences, both in Prague. Our first night after dinner in a quaint restaurant, we were treated to a Bohemian and Moravian folk music duo who sang and played flute and accordion. Fabulous! Pros: a good value, efficient, covers a lot of sites, and provides the opportunity to visit places that might have been hard to access otherwise. Really enjoyed the meals! Cons: the format of the tour lacks the flexibility to adapt to changing weather/interests/local activities that were impromptu. "Honza's sharing of culture, history and architecture, in particular the walking tour of Wenceslas Square and his family's role in the fateful events of the 20th century (his grandmother watching the announcement creating Czechoslovakia in 1918, his aunt witnessing the Nazi occupation and his/his sister's marching during the Velvet Revolution), was a moving tribute to courage and a people's need for self-determination."

This tour was one of the two best of our eight Rick Steves tours. Aside from the beauty and histories of Prague and Budapest, Honza made this a special tour. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hearing the season opening of the Prague Symphony with Pinkas Zukerman in Prague's Symphony Hall was a delight beyond measure. All facets of the tour exceeded my expectations. The hotels, meals, tourist experiences were all better than I had hoped for. This tour really enlightened me about what could be experienced with a very well planned and operated group tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our tour guide, Honza, was a young student in Prague during the "velvet revolution" of 1989. I cannot say enough good about my tour experience with Honza Vihan. He was totally prepared and confident, always inspiring us with interesting information and stories in his down to earth manner. Our hotels and meals were excellent. The history and each city came alive with his impeccable English and humor. Having said this is a strenuous tour, all were able to succeed. The plan of activities gave us time to enjoy the other tour participants and be ready to continue each time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Learning about the march that began the Czech revolution, then being on the march ourselves made the history very real. I could remember what my family and I were experiencing at the time and was very interested that Honza and his sister and his parents of course were participants. Honza Vihan is one of the most inspiring people I have met. The tour used time we would not have if we were on our own (as we usually have been). Excellent choice of meals when provided to us. Excellent choice of restaurants. The hotels were excellent. The level of activity was strenuous, but Honza spaced activity out enough that we all could do it. Interlace with it all were memorable stories, quotes from books. Honza never sounded academic. Honza was easy to understand-perfect English

Etelka, our guide was terrific! Handled everything beautifully and calmly. All our needs were taken care of. Our local guides Misha and Sharks and the professor in Budapest were also above and beyond. They gave personal, heartfelt Stories that enhanced the history.

The tour was well planned, well lead and the quizzes were excellent. Sarka was informative friendly and enthusiastic. S he presented an interesting perspective on Prague and growing up under communism. Ellemer in Budapest was knowledgeable and appropriately cynical as our Hungarian guide. Etelka was delightful, enthusiastic and incredibly helpful. My wife and I have traveled a lot and felt this was our best trip!

My husband Michael and I had a great time! What I most enjoyed were big monuments like the Prague Castle, the Jewish quarter, Budapest's Castle hill, etc. The river cruise in Budapest was very nice. I LOVED the cooking class!! This is our third RS tour and never before has there been a cooking class. I love food and cooking, so this was very enjoyable to me!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me, my wow moment came when my husband and I ate dinner at Klub Arkitechture in Prague (I believe it's mentioned in the guide book). My heritage is Czech and I have wonderful childhood memories with my parents, eating authentic Czech food. The restaurant's roast duck, bread dumplings, and sweat cabbage were amazing. As I also said, I loved the cooking class in Budapest!"

This was my first Rick Steves' Tour and first trip to Eastern Europe. I really enjoyed the mix of excursions and free time. The guide and local guides were excellent!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was really moved by learning of the experiences of our local guides during the communist era. When Sarka talked about her parents hiding money in her toys on the few occasions when they were allowed to travel, it gave me a deeper appreciation of my freedom."

I had another amazing week in Europe thanks to Rick Steves. The tour was well organized with absolutely no hiccups. The local guides in Prague were especially good, and I enjoyed hearing about their lives during communism. The hotels were very clean and comfortable, and the meals were generous and delicious.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The views we experienced on the Danube cruise in Budapest were spectacular. The cooking class was really fun, too bad it was only an hour and a half!"

This was our first Rick Steve's tour. It did not disappoint, Jana our main guide was awesome. she is very compassionate, approachable and knowledgeable. The total experience was so much immersive. We learned a lot of the 2 cities plus more. Of course, Jana form slovakia and Elemer were at par with Ms Jana. Great team.

It's impossible to list all of the great things about this tour. First and foremost was our tour guide, Jana! Our accommodations were very comfortable and the arranged food was great. I really enjoyed having free time to try out my newly learned navigation skills. Our guest guides had an overwhelming knowledge of the areas we toured together.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The setting for our evening of special opera music in Prague was amazing. The cooking class was also great. This activity could be used for team building earlier in our tour to get people better acquainted. ADDITIONAL COMMENT FOR #16 - We had great families on our tour but it didn't seem like the parents got to socialize much which is a loss for the group and awkward in small groups."

This is our fourth trip to Europe and our first Rick Steves' tour. Amazing is how I would describe the experience. Jana was excellent and provided us with a lot of history and local perspective. My wife and I learned much more than if we had only read the tour books. We loved the small groups, the excellent location for the hotels, and the experience. I would definitely go on another Rick Steves' tour in the future.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many "wows" on this tour. In prague, I would say the private concert was a wow moment. The baritone singer was a guy we had seen on billboards in prague and to see him perform in such a small setting was unbelievable. In Budapest, the wow would be the cooking class. That class was so much fun!"

This was my husband and I's first Rick Steeves' tour, and we didn't know what to expect. We enjoyed watching his show and listening to him on NPR, and we frequently used his guidebooks for our vacations. Let's just put it this way - the tour exceeded our expectations far and beyond what we had anticipated! Our tour guide, Jana, was warm and inviting and provided us with plenty of ideas to fill our free time. She also explained the history of the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Where do we begin!?!? We can't isolate our experience for one "wow" moment, because we have several. On our first evening in Prague with our Rick Steeves' group we were treated to a "private" traditional Czech band concert, which was a delight! We also had a private opera concert following dinner our final evening in Prague. We enjoyed the tour of the grand Opera House in Budapest. The Hungarian cooking class was also so fun, and probably one of our best meals! The Danube Cruise in Budapest!"

This was my first Rick Steve's tour, but will not be my last. I had read the reviews about the people who are attracted to his tours, and it is very true that his tours attract like minded people who are eager to learn, and enjoy the tour experience. As a solo traveler, I never felt alone with such a fun, friendly group. Jana was an amazing tour guide. Fun, professional, friendly, knowledgeable, kind, helpful, and she genuinely cared about each individual!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The first evening in Prague, the welcome dinner near the Charles bridge was a blast with fun local entertainment, and then seeing the beauty of the night lights on the bridge, castle, cathedral, and the town. Loved the sunset river cruise on the Danube in Budapest, the light show was spectacular on the Parliament buildings."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your online customer account. About one month prior to the tour departure, in your customer account you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Prague and out of Budapest ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Prague guidebook.
