Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Ireland

We'll gather together at our hotel at 2 p.m. for a meeting and orientation. Then we'll take a short drive to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind, teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Afterward we'll get to know one another over a hearty "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Ennis.

Day 2: Ennis to Dingle Town

After breakfast, we'll pack up and board our comfy bus, setting course for Ireland's Dingle Peninsula. En route we'll stop to visit County Limerick's lovely village of Adare, brimming with thatched cottages and flower gardens. At the end of our drive we'll arrive in the pastel-painted, quintessentially Irish harbor town of Dingle. After a walking tour, we'll enjoy a dinner of local specialties followed by an evening of Gaelic tunes.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 3: The Dingle Peninsula

It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sites. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with our local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly situated Great Blasket Centre, where we'll get a close-up look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. We'll return to Dingle for lunch together and a visit to the Dingle Falconry Experience for an intimate introduction to their majestic birds of prey. The remainder of the day is free for you to soak in more of Dingle's charms and enjoy dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.

Day 4: The Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny

Today we'll bid goodbye to Dingle as our bus transports us across the Emerald Isle to Kilkenny. On our way, we'll stop to tour one of Ireland's most historic and evocative sights: the Rock of Cashel. St. Patrick himself was here more than 1,500 years ago, and ever since, the Rock has been the spiritual heart of Ireland. From the craggy remains of the cathedral and castle to the views stretching out across the Plain of Tipperary, this is where the Irish in you will stir from head to toe. Upon arrival in Kilkenny, we'll take an orientation walk through the medieval town center and visit Kilkenny Castle, a symbol of Norman occupation since the 12th century. After a walk through its restored Victorian interiors and extensive parklands, we'll enjoy dinner together in one of Kilkenny's atmospheric pubs.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kilkenny.

Day 5: Glendalough and Dublin

This morning we'll head back in time with a visit to Glendalough, Ireland's most impressive monastic settlement. We'll visit the iconic Round Tower, ruined churches, and the lakes that give Glendalough its name. Then we're off to Dublin. On the way we'll learn lessons of Ireland's recent struggle for independence at Kilmainham Gaol (when available). After arriving at our hotel, we'll take an orientation walk before setting you free to experience Dublin's lively dining scene on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 6: The Heart and History of Dublin

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin including a stop at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll continue on, learning about the city's often-calamitous history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to its remarkable literary legacy to the modern city of today. The rest of your day will be free to take in some of Dublin's other world-class sights, such as the National Museum of Archaeology or Dublin Castle. Tonight we'll compare notes and celebrate our marvelous week together over a farewell dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Dublin's handy airport, or, for those not ready to return home yet, Dublin is a great jumping off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Navigate cobblestones and difficult terrain at ancient sites.

We had heard good things about Rick Steve's tours from travelers that we had met on European trips where we used the Rick Steve's guidebooks. We did not want to face driving on the left so we decided this was the time for an escorted tour. The tour exceeded our expectations in terms of the quality of the hotels, provided meals, and attractions. Our guide, Dara was very knowledgeable and personable. Both he and the other guests on the tour made for a memorable experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I expected all of the natural beauty, the countryside, seascapes, and mountains to be great. I was surprised at how we enjoyed the pubs, especially the Guinness Storehouse. Also, I did not expect the quality of all of the food that we had."

Our tour of Ireland was above our expectations! While an unpleasant change in airline flights/detours on the first leg of our trip, thanks to Rick’s recommendation to travel with carry on luggage we were able to make it to Dublin WITH our luggage. The balance of the trip was filled with great memories, a fabulous guide, a congenial group of fellow travelers, and a love of Ireland.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many “wow” moments. 1) The vast green grass landscape resembling patchwork quilts, divided by rock walls and filled with sheep. 2) Pub hopping with two other tour couples as we shared pints of Guiness (or Dingle Gin and Fever-Tree tonic!), while savoring the music, 3) A deeper appreciation of Irish history, 4) Trinity College."

We had a wonderful time touring Ireland under the organization of Joe (and safe driving by George). One aspect we love about Rick Steve tours is the guides and their special moments they bring that are unpredicted but amazing. Joe brought several of those moments for us, including meeting Billy and taking a ferry over the Shannon River. The planned moments were really great, including wonderful sites and local guides and a Falconry experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We had an incredible stop on our way to Dingle to meet Billy, the son of John B Keane, a famous playwright in Ireland. He wrote plays that were about the people in Ireland. They were publicans and Billy still owns and operates the pub he grew up in. Billy was a delightful story teller and had great stories about his parents and his life growing up. He is also a writer of his own accord. It was wonderful!! Top marks for our guide Joe for arranging for us to visit his friend."

Andrew shared just the right mix of serious history enlivened by good stories, humor, and attentiveness to our needs. His rapport with our wonderful driver Mark was a delight.

I joined the tour along with 5 family members (cousins) in Ennis. I was a very hesitant tourer mostly due to the bus part but our skillful yet cheerful driver and the well paced commentary and music as we toured made it a very relaxing way to get from one place to tour. As relaxing and educational as the tour was mostly I learned organized tours are not for me, yet maybe in another 10-15 years. For me, there was too much time spent eating. I also acknowledge that is most likely unique to me.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite part was Dingle. It was the perfect size town for me. I like small towns that feel like when you walk about you are walking with local people. There we had enough time to wander about on our own and find our own interesting spots. My one cousin and I sought out independent book stores in each town. The stores and their curators were unique and interesting. Also in Dingle there was enough time for a run along the bay. Definitely would have preferred to eat on our own each night."

My husband and I decided to take the Heart of Ireland tour for our anniversary. We were very pleasantly surprised to find everything so well tailored to us. The accommodations were superb! The tour was a bit rushed. I would rather have spent more time in the central mountain area and coastal communities than three days in Dublin. Great scenery and Paschal was extremely knowledgeable. His friends in the various cities and counties really made the tour personal. George the bus driver was AWESOME. Back to timing, in my opinion, two days per city is better than a a rush through two, an area, and a quick overnight. Hard to relax, but a great history lesson.

I toured Ireland for 2 weeks in 2008 with my two adult children and we followed my newly discovered Rick Steves guide to plan and take our self-driving tour. It was wonderful. Since then I've purchased RS books for many countries in Europe to use on river cruises, a Baltic Sea cruise and other self-driving tours. All were wonderful. The benefit of being on a RS tour was a wonderful guide and excellent presenters in places we would have missed on our own. The only problem is time limits!

Having the time to explore the castle at our own pace was nice and then taking in the gardens and park outside the castle was peaceful. Later exploring the streets of Kilkenny we came across parts of the historic city wall and fortress and moat. Peg, and I and our Grandson Simon had a great time. The 28 people in our group were interesting, positive and adventurous. We were the oldest members but didn’t feel pressured or left behind, even during the long walks. Our guide Geroid provided knowledge, humor and safety. The rolling history and geography lessons were very valuable. George was a great helper/driver. Everyone was prompt and considerate. We appreciate more Ireland, the land of our ancestors. We are sad but proud of our heritage

People connect in Ireland like no place I have been. At the Poet’s Corner in Ennis a musician answered my questions about Yeats by singing a song by him. In Dingle brilliant musicians entertained our group and sent us to experience set dancing at Neligan’s. At EPIC much info about my ancestors in genealogy session. Magdeline memorials. Kilmainha"

I've been to Ireland many times, and wasn't sure that I would see and experience anything "new" this time, especially since I only had a week to spend, but I wasn't disappointed. This was my fifth Rick Steves tour, and the only week-long one, but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. The scenery was beyond breathtaking."

Everything about our 8-day Rick Steve's Ireland tour was wonderful. I loved the accommodations, the meals, the sites we visited, other members of our tour group, our outstanding bus driver Mark and his bus, and, most importantly, our tour guide, Pascal. He was an exceptional guide who shared so much of the Irish history, answered all our questions about life in Ireland today, told great stories that were part of the Irish culture, made suggestions of places to visit, to eat, and to hear music.

"Every place we visited was a wow moment, but what made this special, was when two people left items behind at the B&B, and Suzanne, our tour guide was able to contact the owners of the BB and then contact the guide of another tour who was staying there and then met up with that guide later in the week to retrieve the items. We’ve traveled a fair amount internationally and domestically, always independently. Our first time on a Rick Steves tour or any tour was one of the vacations we’ve ever had. It was first rate all around, our guide Suzanne Cole was fantastic, George our driver was skilled and fun to be around, the itinerary well planned down to the smallest details, the sites and special experiences were amazing and it was all designed to provide us with a marvelous Irish vacation. Mission accomplished.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many wow moments, the beautiful scenery, and enchanting villages and cities. Dingle, the scenery, wonderful b& b, the Irish family music session and the falconry experience. A close second - we had a pint in the rustic Hole in the Wall pub in Kilkenny mentioned in the Ireland tour book. Eight people, 3 of us and 5 locals in the tiny pub. Talking and laughing with the locals, priceless. "

Our 3rd Rick Steves Tour. It was excellent. Tour Guide, Kelli Malone was great. Enjoyed learning from her. Very helpful & informative. Kelli really knows her history. Great suggestions for free time, pubs to get meals, etc. People on the tour were also very nice.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many wow moments. Dingle, Slea Head Drive, Kelli Malone really went out of her way to give a wonderful tour of the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology. That was very impressive. "

Our overall experience was outstanding. We had been planning to do something for our 50th wedding anniversary, when suddenly Covid struck. So, 3 years later my sister-in-law said that they were going to Ireland, with a Rick Steves tour. I asked Emma if she wanted to go and of course the answer was yes.

It was perfect - just what I needed. A remarkable balance of camaraderie and solo time fulfilling my soul. I learned so much in such a relaxing way - What's better than listening to the most excellent guide/historian/teacher on a bus ride throughout the glorious countryside to gain a better understanding of past and present Ireland? These places we visited were unmistakably magical. And I didn't have to lift a finger to do anything - a welcome vacation. Stephen= #1 world champion of tour guides.

"Impossible to pick just one. The wet nose of an Irish wolf hound greeting my forehead. So many delightful animal encounters on this tour! The wild (domestic) dogs racing thru the CRYSTAL factory! The one who fell at my feet after I pet him for 2 seconds. The sociable horse en route to the morning bus ride. And falconry against the backdrop of the Dingle Peninsula! Experience of a lifetime. But how can I forget my other most favorites? "Performing"/dancing w GENIUS David Geaney & singing on bus:)"

Our guide, Suzanne, was welcoming, charming and helpful. She even helped us chase a forgotten backpack, going way beyond he call of duty. It was a lot of hours on the bus, but she filled them with information about so much of Irish life. The itinerary was varied and thoughtful--including much that we probably wouldn't have experienced traveling on our own.

Very good, wish the tour was longer by a couple of days to include Kinsale as well. This was our 4th Rick Steves Tour (Best of Adriatic,18 day Best of Italy, and Best of Eastern France). This trip felt "rushed" and with 28 travelers was the most we ever experienced to date.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We enjoyed many moments but especially the Slea Head drive on the Dingle Peninsula. Could have spent a few more hours at the fairly new Blasket Centre that captured much of the history of the immediate area and the people who lived on the islands themselves (a 1st class historical museum). Scenery outstanding, especially with the sunny days we enjoyed on our trip. "

From the moment we glimpsed the beautiful green patchwork fields and met some of the cheerful, helpful locals, we were in love with Ireland. We were almost blown away at the Cliffs of Moher, enjoyed the castles, cathedrals & pubs & stared in awe at the Book of Kells. It was a wonderful trip. We learned so much about Ireland and realized it's a miracle the culture survived with so many trying to wipe them off the face of the earth! I came away with a full heart and pride for my Irish heritage.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My husband's was experiencing the gale force winds while staring over the edge of the earth at the Cliffs of Moher. My wow moment was staring out the window of the beehive stacked church. However how can one discount having a a falcon resting on your forearm or speculating about the destruction caused by King Henry VIII standing in the ruins of various monastic sites and ruined cathedrals. The Blasket Island Heritage Center was outstanding. Glendalough was moving in a quiet, peaceful way. "

Beside the fact that Ireland is beautiful and the people are charming the overall tour was well organized and the individual tours, activities and site locations were well worth experiencing. It didn't hurt that we had unusually nice weather for Ireland. And the glue that held it all together was our excellent guide Gearoid. He was not only knowledgeable and friendly, he was also extremely funny. The bus we traveled on was very nice and the driver George was extremely competent and safe.

Favorite "WOW" moment

The tour was more fun and interesting than I had imagined. I learned so much about the country of my Ancestors and how closely I relate to the Irish culture based on my upbringing. The guides were gracious, caring and knowledgeable. The hotel, restaurants and tour sites were outstanding. A higgly organized tour. Thankfully I chose to attend all scheduled events. The private performances were incredible and gave the tour an even deeper sense of the Irish culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were a few. The Cliffs of Moher and the Book of Kells. The suggestion of the Epic Museum of Immigration was incredible in the tour but also the fact it led me to meeting a genealogist to trace my ancestry. This was my 5th Rick Steves Tour, and for the first time I was not completely satisfied with itinerary cadence and the tour overall. There was too much "on/off the bus experience which produced either not enough time at the itinerary sites (Glendalough we only had an hour of free time, Adare was a bathroom stop, Powerscourt we only had a bout an hour 1/2), Kilkenny got there late in the day). Conversely, the 3 nights in Dublin was 1 too many nights - there just isn't enough to do in Dublin.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Dingle Peninsula is just amazingly beautiful with small towns, views of the North Atlantic, and Great Blastic Island. When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly affect Dublin.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Shannon (SNN) and out of Dublin (DUB) — "multicity" on flight booking websites. Ennis, where our tour starts, is an easy half-hour bus ride from Shannon Airport.

Note: If you plan to spend a few days in the UK as part of your itinerary, you'll find a better selection of post-tour Dublin–London flights to choose from than pre-tour London–Shannon flights.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
