Sightseeing notes

* = included in Rick's Audio Europe™ app

Day 1: Welcome to Italy

Welcome to Italy! Today is a great day to simply get lost in Venice (remember, it's an island), exploring the alleys and cruising the canals. We'll meet at our hotel at 5 p.m. for a group get-together. Your tour manager will give an overview of the days ahead, answer your questions, and offer a quick orientation to our neighborhood. Then you're free for dinner on your own. Sleep in Venice (2 nights).

Day 2: Exploring Venice

The entire day and evening are yours to experience the Byzantine majesty of St. Mark's Basilica*, the formidable Doge's Palace*, the masterpiece-packed Frari Church*, maybe take in a church concert, waltz on St. Mark's Square, or pub-crawl your way through this unique city. No bus today.

Day 3: Lake Como

This morning we'll say "ciao Venezia" as we meet up with our bus and drive to Lake Como. Along the way, we'll stop to grab lunch before arriving at our final destination — the sleepy Lake Como village of Varenna, where you'll have plenty of time to explore its romantic promenade, tiny harbor, and narrow lanes. Sleep in Varenna (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 5 hours.

Day 4: Cruising Lake Como

All you'll need is a Lake Como ferry boat pass and you'll have the entire day and evening free to explore the villages and waterways of romantic Lake Como, including elegant stops, such as Bellagio. Hike up into the Alpine foothills for unforgettable vistas, or take an hour-long train trip to Milan for a day of city sightseeing. No bus today.

Day 5: Italian Riviera

Today's destination is the Italian Riviera, home to the cliff-hugging hamlets of the Cinque Terre, pastel beach towns, and stylish resorts. We'll arrive late this afternoon, with plenty of time to enjoy the pleasant eateries and ambience of our seaside town. Sleep on the Italian Riviera (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours.

Day 6: Exploring the Cinque Terre

Ahh, it's time to take a "vacation from your vacation" today in our Mediterranean getaway. Pick a Cinque Terre village and spend your day exploring the stairways and alleyways, sunning yourself on the rocks, or sipping a cappuccino and catching up on your journal at an outdoor café. Or, if you're looking for lots of exercise, fresh air, and panoramic views, start your day early and hike the cliff-side paths that connect the towns. For dinner tonight, enjoy what's local and fresh: the seafood and the "best pesto in Italy." No bus today.

Day 7: Florence and David

This morning we'll drive to Europe's cultural capital, Florence. This afternoon is yours to explore the Renaissance city, including Brunelleschi's magnificent cathedral dome*(r), Ghiberti's Baptistery doors*, and other creations that helped define this world-changing era. You could even take time to visit the Accademia Gallery*(r) and marvel at works of sculptural genius: Michelangelo's rough-hewn Prisoners and his greatest masterpiece, David. Sleep in Florence (2 nights). Train: ¼ hour. Bus: 3 hours.

Day 8: Renaissance Florence

Today is yours to devote time to the breathtaking Renaissance art of the Uffizi*(r) — home to the finest collection of Italian paintings anywhere — including works by Leonardo, Botticelli, Michelangelo, and more. Or you could stroll across the delightfully medieval Ponte Vecchio, and visit several of the city's art-filled churches and museums, browse the colorful markets, and find a special trattoria for dinner on your own. No bus today.

Day 9: Assisi

Today we'll venture into the heart of magical Tuscany, stopping for several hours to poke around the quiet lanes of a friendly hill town. This afternoon we'll make a modern-day pilgrimage to the beautifully preserved hill town of Assisi, the hometown of St. Francis. Sleep in Assisi (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours.

Day 10: St. Francis' Assisi

In a time of unprecedented church wealth, St. Francis inspired a refocused spirituality through poverty, humility, and the beauty of nature in Umbria. You'll have all day and evening to experience the beautifully frescoed Basilica of St. Francis*, and wander through (and wonder at) this charming town and its surrounding hills. No bus today.

Day 11: La Dolce Vita Rome

This morning we'll get an early start as we make our way from Assisi to Rome, with a quick stop for lunch along the way. Arriving at our Rome hotel this afternoon, you can enjoy dinner at the outdoor café of your dreams, then celebrate la dolce vita Roman-style, with an after-dinner stroll through the floodlit heart of the city, lacing together the lively campos, classy piazzas, and splashy fountains. Don't forget to taste some refreshing gelato along the way. Sleep in Rome (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours.

Day 12: A Day of Roman Roamin'

Rome is the grand finale of our trip, packed with historical riches, cultural delights, and an infinite supply of wows. Today, aided by Rick's audio tours, you could follow the footsteps of emperors through the Roman Forum*, Colosseum*, and Pantheon*. If the Renaissance is more your speed, the immense St. Peter's Basilica* (home to Michelangelo's sublime Pietà) and the sprawling Vatican Museums*(r) (home to his mind-boggling Sistine Chapel) are a metro or bus ride away. It's your final night in Rome, so get out and make it special. Salute! No bus today.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

It's a breeze to reach Rome's airports by taxi or train. Your tour manager will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our My Way®: Italy in 13 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  3. Be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  4. Be responsible for your own daily sightseeing, admissions, meals (except breakfasts), and nongroup transportation.

It went like a well-oiled machine. Hotels lived up to expectations, bus rides were smooth and relaxing. But it never felt like we were bound to a strict schedule. The group I traveled with was very congenial--no grumps

A great, low-stress introduction to travel in Europe. Not having to hassle with driving/insurance/parking/traffic and thus being able to see the roadside sites from the bus was great. Staying in local hotels near the center of the best sites was outstanding and it allowed us to walk everywhere. Kathleen was an outstanding tour manager, always willing to provide helpful suggestions and share her experiences in each location.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Introducing my wife to Europe, as she has never been overseas. I have lived and traveled in Europe and that is our intent when we both retire, however we wanted a "test" trip to see if our retirement plans are on course. She loved it and can't wait to return!"

This tour more than met my expectations. From our first group meeting to our last dinner together, it was nothing less than a fantastic experience. Prior to leaving, we had planned a lot for our time at each town but having Kathleen's expert advice, each stop was well planned and we were able to fit in all we wanted to do. We had a nice over view of Northern Italy and plan to return to our favorite places and stay longer.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Looking down over Florence from the top of the Duomo (Dome Climb) and then seeing all of Cinque Terre towns from the boat as we traveled back from Riomaggiore to Monterosso after hiking the trails."

We had a very aggressive agenda and therefore clocked over 94 miles of walking in 15 days. No way were we able to see it all! As physically demanding as it was, probably wouldn't change anything! Rest when you get home! We did allocate rest periods each day in the afternoons. Fortunately, it was unusually cool for May which helped, although I could have used another pair of jeans and fewer shorts, but you never know. Also, don't let rain spoil your trip, take a small umbrella and press on!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were able to stop at the US Military Cemetary outside Florence on Memorial Day. What a humbling experience! Certainly, St Peter's Bascilica in Rome was probably the most impressive followed closely by the Dome in Florence and St Francis' Bascilica in Assisi. The Vatican was simply overwhelming with all of the art work and exhibits, not to overlook the Sistine Chapel! The Collosseum, Palintine Hill and the Forum were most interesting. Toured the jail that held the Apostles, Paul and Peter."

We have been on a couple Rick Steve's fully guide tour but this year we choose the My Way Italy in 13 Days, it was a great choice. With the My Way tour having all of the travel and hotel arrangements were taken care of allowing us to concentrate on the daily site seeing and finding the perfect place for dinner. Our tour manager, Kathleen, was outstanding, she keep us informed, offered suggestions, and did all of the little things to help ensure our trip was a success.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "wow" moment was an entire day. It started with a hike up to the castle in Varenna for stunning views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains including the snow capped Swiss Alps. Our hike was followed by a tour of the lake in a Venice Water Taxi style boat, our skipper was knowledgeable, had a great personality, making the experience very enjoyable. To cap off my wow moment, dinner looking out at Lake Como watching the sunset."

We had a great time! The tour was very well planned. From the arrangement of the hotels, the bus transportation and especially our tour guide Kathleen. She provided us with great ideas on things to do, and the best time to do them. She was very knowledgable of the areas and even had great suggestions on where to eat. I would recommend this trip to a friend or anyone interested in seeing Italy. It was a great mix of Italy's city life, small town and countryside. Bravo!

It was all much more than I expected it would be. Kathleen went way above what I thought a "my way " guide would be. She provided insight into each of the sites we were to visit and tips on how to avoid hassles when booking out tours. I also really enjoyed the bus ride. Our driver Sauro was very expert at negotiating some of the crazy hairpin turns in Varenna. The bus was comfortable and I loved the orange poppies along roadside. Every site we visited had something special to offer.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I really enjoyed Assisi. It was sort of a spiritual experience for me which I was not expecting. The 'happy hour" Kathleen set up in Assisi was also a lot of fun. I had some great conversations with other group members.( Of course the wine helped as well)."

We have been on several Rick Steves tours, and, as always, this tour met our expectations. We decided on this tour because friends who had never been to Italy and felt this was the best way for us to show them our favorite country. In a sense, we acted as tour guides once we arrived in the cities.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Although not a "wow" in the sense of Rome or Florence, for me it was Assisi. Although I've been there a couple of times, it was only for a few hours. The opportunity to stay for a couple of days was relaxing, restful, and peaceful."

This was our first My Way tour and it was fantastic. Kathleen was knowledgeable, caring and did a wonderful job to make our time in Italy great! Really enjoyed that the days were free for us to plan anything we wanted but that we didn't have to plan our travel between locations and lodging. Love the locations of the hotels. Will definitely look to do other My Way tours and would be thrilled if Kathleen was our tour manager again.

"There were so many. But I would say hearing an orchestra play "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the square in Venice. It was a perfect blend of having lodging accommodations and transportation between cities taken care of, with flexibility and freedom regarding dining and the itinerary at each of the cities or sites visited. We were able to see many sites and experience many things we had not previously enjoyed on a previous visit to Italy five years ago that we had arranged on our own.

The tour was my first experience in a group . The" My way" plan held true to a sense of independence yet a constant comfort that your guide was handling all the arrangements and was there if ever in need. Every detail was well chosen and the guide's personal choices of additional information were delightful and helpful , especially in language . The cities and towns chosen gave a broad spectrum of Italian living and history and guide Marianna enhanced each prior to arrival.

It was our (hubby and I) first trip to Europe and definitely a vacation of a lifetime so far. Very pleased with everything - our excellent guide Marianna and driver Stefano, the location of the hotels, and the nicest people in our group. We're glad we chose the My Way Italy which gave us more flexibility with our schedule and yet were still able to reconnect with the rest of the group along the way. Can't wait to go on another Rick Steves tour - creating beautiful memories that last!

This was a really great way for us to visit Italy for the first time. The hotels had great central locations. Some were nicer than others, but all were comfortable and the breakfasts were very good. The pacing of the trip was very good as it went from big city, high intensity tourism, to more relaxed places like Lake Como, and then back to the big city. So there was a nice chance to recharge a little bit between the high intensity places.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When the hotel bellman opened the window shutters in our room to reveal the utterly spectacular view we had of Lake Como, we definitely said "wow". There were many other wow moments as well - The Parthenon, St. Peters, The Duomo in Florence to name just a few."

Italy was a beautiful place to visit, even in the rain. We understand the rain was unusual for May, as were the very cool temperatures. Each place we stayed was welcoming and accommodating. Out tour manager, Marianna, was especially cordial and knowledgeable! By the end of the trip we were all so comfortable with one another and had made new friends. Our group especially melded together very quickly. I believe that was in part, because of Marianna.

We had rain for 7 of the 14 days and still had an excellent trip. The design of the "my way" tour is smartly planned- city, countryside, back to city, etc so there was fast paced activity followed by relaxation in peaceful settings. I also felt that the Rick Steves Italy book is very up to date - even the restaurant owners named in the book and the food specials seemed to have been written very recently.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The evenings in all locations were different from the daytime. Bars and cafes at night, music and lights, and evening strolls were such a different experience from day tours that it almost feels like we were there more than 13 days. The lake view from the hotel at Lake Como was so perfect that I didn't instagram photos because I would have felt guilty - like bragging to my family and friends "I'm here and you're not""

We went in with high expectations and plenty of excitement and the experience exceeded our expectations. We loved the pace and the itinerary. The hotels were good to great; even the motor coach was a pleasant experience. The R.S. Italy book was great! Our Tour Manager, Maryanna,(sp?) was terrific. She is pleasant, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, provided invaluable insight and was always available to answer questions. She is a wonderful representative of the Rick Steve's organization.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Italy itself is a wow experience and it's tough to tease out one moment, but I think when the porter at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Varenna opened the shutters and pulled back the curtains in our room showing Lake Como in it's sparkling glory, well I think 'WOW!' is literally what my wife and I exclaimed. But it's tough. Like picking one's favorite kid or grand kid. One choice excludes literally a hundred moments. Italy will always be with me."

Unfortunately, the weather proved to be a big negative factor on our tour. We had rain, wind, and cold, none of which we prepared for in packing. This greatly affected our sightseeing activities. We spent a great deal of time seeking shelter, and trying to buy warmer clothing. The tour itinerary felt a bit rushed for us. We definitely would have liked more time in Venice, Florence, and Rome. The time in Varenna, Monterosso, and Assisi was fine. Our room in Assisi had issues: ants & no heat.

The patience he showed with other members of the group who asked the same questions 5 or 6 times was amazing, quite the saint. This was my first organized tour of any kind so I don't have any past tours to base it on. That said, I would give it a "very good" rating. I selected the My Way format because I wanted to rely on the RS organization to provide good, clean and centrally located hotels and transportation to the different cities. These are the elements that I am rating very good. I particularly liked the bus and the professional bus driver, Giuseppe.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Other than seeing the Italian cities that I'd never seen before (this was our first time in Italy), I don't have a single "wow" moment. We enjoyed every city and the sites we elected to go see. Dara, our tour manager, was always professional and very helpful in providing excellent info on each site as we motored down the road to the next town. We found the itinerary a great balance between large cites and quaint small towns. We enjoyed all the locations and sites through out the trip. It took 16 years to convince my husband to go to Italy. He enjoyed the trip so much I am sure we will return to Europe again soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Amanda as our guide. We appreciated the convenience of the hotel bookings and the excellent bus transportation. We were looking forward to the food and the scenery, art, and people in Italy. This trip did not disappoint. We enjoyed trying different restaurants, including the ones that Amanda recommended. We enjoyed meeting and observing the locals in each stop and finding ways to communicate beyond our 7 words of Italian.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Sistine Chapel and the statue of David. We also loved the agroturisme dinner outside of Assisi and the food, in general. Loved seeing the scenery in general, from Lake Como to the mountains where they are still mining Carerra marble. And the people, like the lovely Italian couple sitting next to us at a seaside café in Cinqueterra, who treated us to espressos after our lunch."

It was so amazing. We were blessed to have an outstanding tour guide in Amanda. She was so helpful and knowledgeable. All the accommodations were outstanding. Using My Way was so great for us. Our tour leader was terrific! Amanda was delightful, knowledgeable, and funny. The bus was just right for the group and our driver was outstanding. We marveled at the tight places he was able to maneuver! And, we had a wonderful group. The issue (and definitely not the Rick Steves tour's problem) was the huge crowds in Venice, Florence and the Vatican. If we had been smart, we would have selected a couple weeks without major holidays. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the My Way Tour.

I have done several regular Steves tours and thoroughly enjoyed them. I wasn't sure I could keep up to the pace. My Way seemed like the way to find out. It was perfect. Used the guide book to make choices and found maps, explanations etc. right on target. Everyone on the bus was fun, interesting, with great ideas as well. The size of the group, 25 was awesome.

The tour was an excellent combination of large and small Italian cities/towns. The former included Venus, Florence, and Rome, while the latter included towns on the shores of Lake Como (Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio), the five towns that comprise Cinque Terra (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore), and Assisi. I especially enjoyed the "My Way" format, which allowed Lisa and me to explore either by ourselves or with the new friends we met on the tour.

This was our first Rick Steves tour. We chose the My Way Italy in 13 Days tour because it allowed us more flexibility to explore on our own and at the same time have someone else take care of the transportation and hotel arrangements. The hotels were basic, but adequate, and located centrally and within walking distance of the many sights we wanted to see. Our tour manager, Amanda, shared her knowledge of the history of the locations we visited, and entertained us with travel stories.

"Seeing St. Mark's Basilica, the Duomo, and St. Peter's Basilica for the first time was my favorite "wow" moment. Their art and architecture and the history they represent was stunning. This was our first Rick Steves' tour and we were completely satisfied with the experience. We are already looking into our next one. Laurel took very good care of the group and went out of her way to answer questions and give advice about each of the areas we visited. We loved the way we alternated between cities and smaller towns as the tour progressed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was expecting to be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of beautiful artworks and architecture Italy contains. It certainly delivered on those items but looking back I think my Wow moment was visiting the American War Cemetery just outside of Florence. Laurel arranged a surprise side trip to the cemetery. Our tour experience was extremely interesting and enjoyable. This was our first trip to Europe and we had a complete experience of both the Italian countryside and the hustle and bustle of the big cities such as Florence and Rome. While I love to travel, making arrangements is overwhelming for me! This was our first time in Italy/Europe. We are active and independent. We didn't want to be tied to a formal tour. The Rick Steves MyWay tour option was just what we needed. Have been traveling with your books since they first came out, many many years and many trips to Europe. This was my first tour - traveling with a daughter who is not a great traveler we did not want to drive or train in Italy.. and do not enjoy group touring since you have taught us so well to be independent! This My Way tour was absolutely the best way for us to go to Italy and just enjoy being together. Frankly we don't care so much for the museums or crowds in the cities..

We are "tour leery" people and this experience exceeded our expectations! All hotels were so well located and the bus was extremely comfortable. I never felt rushed and loved having the time to follow our own rhythm. Could not have hoped for a nicer group to travel with and our tour leader (so much more than an "escort"!) was super. We enjoyed our tour very much. We traveled in a 3-person group and all of the hotel accommodations were acceptable. Overall, we all thought the cost of the tour was reasonable and money well spent.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Outside of the jaw-dropping locales and monuments I think the 2 biggest highlights were Lake Como and the Florence American military cemetery. After going from the hustle-and-bustle of Venice to the majestic mountains and serene Lake Como it was...magical. The 'My Way' tour was perfect for my wife and I. We were really in control of our days, without the stress of driving from town to town and having a place to stay that was perfectly centrally located each and every time. Our tour manager, Donato was perfect. He provided valuable insights that saved time and money, as well as making things a bit easier. We had used the Rick Steves Italy book extensively in planning our trip in advance, so we had ideas about where we wanted to spend our time.

"Virtually every moment had a wow factor to it. Knowing that I was in places with thousands of years of history was mind blowing. From a 'my way' tour standpoint, a couple. First, the bus (Alterini Bus Company) and bus driver, Roberto. We had some crazy moments of driving where I was thankful for his superior skill set, and that I was not doing the driving. The other was the hotel [INVALID]ion, particularly locations. Just looking out from the hotel terraces, windows, balconies. Wow."

This was our first trip to Europe. In general it was a great trip. Donato was absolutely amazing as a tour manager. The only thing that keeps this from being outstanding is the pace of the trip. 1.5 days in each town just wasn't enough time to explore and most of all relax. Now that we have been on a tour we know that and will plan differently on the next. As newbies we didn't really know what to expect. The places we visited were wonderful. Bus rides were enjoyable. The tour was great: each stop was special in its own way; the tour leader (Rich) was super informative, helpful, fun, engaged, smart, etc.; really nice tour group and we enjoyed meeting up with many of the other group members at many of the stops. Aside from the early start times on the travels days, which definitely goes against my grain, we got to do it our way with just enough helpful hints from Rich to make the most of the time we had in each place. "I loved the beauty of Venice away from the crowds. The buildings and streets of Venice are unique, an aging grande dame on the water! But, the beauty of Cinque Terre and Assisi are close seconds. Italy is filled with treasures.. hard to choose."

This was my 7th RS tour, 2nd of which was a "My Way". We had the very best group of people and now, most are FB friends! Rich was delightful as our guide, not only extremely organized, but fun company when we invited him to join us on various occasions. Amazing towns put together to visit, liked the mix of large and smaller cities in between.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Viewing the Trevi Fountain once again - seeing Assisi for second time (a favorite town of mine). There's a "wow" moment at almost every turn, so difficult to choose. Lake Como, breathtaking. Seeing the Botticelli Venus for first time. The views on the Manarola Wine Walk."

We chose a My Way Tour so that we could have the luxury of stopping at shops and locations of beauty, at our leisure without the worry of rushing to keep up with a marching tour group. The My Way Tour of Italy allowed us this luxury. Tasting our way through Italy was a treat.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I found that visiting Assisi was my most inspring moment. While all the cities had beautiful churches and basilicas, the visitors at the Portiuncula in Assisi showed a depth of reverance and respect that it was palpable. Even the Sistine Chapel as beautiful as it is, was a crowded, noisy experience with photograhers challenging why they couldn't take pictures, and Silentio commands. Another site was the City of Varenna with its panoramic walk along the cliffs to the boat landing."

It was wonderful, more than I hoped for. Andy was marvelous, he was ,there for us at every turn. I loved the boutique hotels. The trip became a little grueling toward the end, with only two days and moving on, but that probably is the best possible considering we only had two weeks. The dollar value was good.

Well, Barbara and I had traveled before, mostly cruises in a group setting that failed to give us the cultural experiences that we wanted. The "my way" plan was a wake up call for us. We are older travelers and discovered that we can do it; with occasional help and guidance from Andy we managed the subways, trains, city buses, taxis and the WALKING, and saw and experienced enough of Italy to satisfy us. But. we want more. You could not ask for a better guide/escort than Andy Steves.

This vacation was like living in a fairy tale. Beautiful vistas at every turn, interaction with genuine local people, amazing food, brand new experiences, and the freedom to explore. We followed your advice to plan our days ahead according to our interests, and that was planning well spent. Every day was a new adventure. This was the vacation of a lifetime.

This was my first tour with your company and you made it very convenient and stress free. Italy was better then I expected and the food was fabulous. However, I don't think I would do another tour at this time. The last time I visited Europe we spent two weeks in 4 cities. I love to be able to explore and get a feel for the city that I am in and 2 nights in each city felt rushed to me. Of course you have to set up your tours to accommodate the majority and I am probably the minority.

This was our first My Way Tour, and would choose this this style for any future trip. Having the logistics of getting to each destination and then finding a good hotel was taken care of which took away all the stress, yet we had complete flexibility to do what we wanted to do and when. "Most of our "wow" moments came when we were exploring on our own. Great leader, comfortable and efficient transportation, likeable tour group. In retrospect, Cinque Terre was over-rated, and maybe Siena would have been a better choice than Assisi, which wasn't worth two nights although it had highlight moments, too. Maybe one night there? This was the perfect way for our group of four to taste bits of italy ina relatively short timeframe. While we'd have liked another day in most of the places to obviate tge feeling of living out of a suitcase, still, we don't know how we'd be able to see such a variety of locales/regions. We really enjoyed our experience as first time Rick Steves tourers. The quality of the hotels was outstanding, with one exception, and the side trip to San Gimingnano with a wine tasting was really one of our favorite things. Lake Como was our favorite place with few crowds and a terrific hotel upgrade at the Victoria in Varenna. We loved touring on the ferries, the amazing views with dinner, and the beautiful gardens to be toured. It was lovely to be in a mini town that we could walk the full length easily every day. Assisi was surprisingly wonderful because of the compact size and the lack of crowds. The Rick Steves walking tour was easy to do, and the town's charms were around every corner.

This was a great tour to get a taste of all the different areas of Italy in a two week time frame. We loved the fact that our accommodations and travel destination to destination were taken care of, it made for a stress free vacation in a new country!

very good way to see high lights of Italy , with out the hassle of a very structured full on guided tour, also the transportation was excellent, anything to limit train and car travel is best option to many (crazy scooter drivers lol) and not always safest feeling on the trains , if you need cars service we liked private Van shuttle service from Rome to Sorrento for the extended portion .

It was wonderful to have the logistics taken care of by someone else. The hotel locations were great and the suggestions, historical background of the areas from Kathleen were very helpful. The tips from fellow travellers in the group were awesome as well. Our group was a lot fun and we enjoyed getting to know the various ones. We would have missed out on different experiences if we had done the trip all on our own. We thoroughly enjoyed our 13 day My Way Italy trip.

"There were several. Venice was fanastic-- pleasantly surprised of how easy it was to get around. The architecture was beautiful. We enjoyed walking down the alleys, going to the cafes, gelato, the history and being surrounded by water. We also loved San Gimignano and Asissi. Slower pace, less people surrounded by the beautiful country side of Tuscany and Umbria. Kathleen put together potluck happy hour when we got to Asissi at the courtyard of the hotel. Great time socializing and relaxing."

Our trip was wonderful! This was our first trip to Europe and first time travelling alone. We were nervous about arranging accommodations and travel on our own, but did not want to be locked into a structured "tour" where every minute was planned for us. Awesome way to see Italy! This is the first tour that we've ever taken where nothing went wrong and every experience was positive. Our tour guide was such a joy, she greeted everyone with a smile and a positive attitude about the days adventures ahead. The "Italy My Way" is the best way to travel, small, intimate group so you can get to know everyone, yet you're free to do what you want in the day, and you have a well educated guide to tell you what's worth doing and what's not!

The hotel [INVALID]ions were excellent in that we were close to primary sites and/or transportation. Our escort (Donato) was excellent. My wife and I came away thinking that we would next time spend more times (e.g., 3 nights) in fewer locations. However, we enjoyed the lesser traveled stops (Varenna and Assisi) more as they were less crowded and hectic. Breakfasts were nice in that many interacted on what they might do that day or shared tips from what they did the day prior.

Donato(Don)is an excellent guide wanting to make sure everyone had a good tour. The hotels were excellent. We backpacked Europe in 1985 using Rick's book so we were expecting more basic hotels, but this was great and pleasant places to stay. Glad we took extra days in Venice and Rome on each end of the trip. 2 days each. As usual, not enough time, but could use an extra day on the tour in Florence. Italy has outgrown the Rick Steves' experience. Venice, Monterosso, Florence, and Rome are crowded to a point (and this was in May) that the concept of "Europe through the back door" has become a joke--totally bogus. Like Rick, I travelled to Europe during the 70's and 80's when it was a different experience. Little personal moments of contact with Europeans and the European culture were available. No longer.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Coming home from Europe in the 70's, I was a little disappointed to live in the USA. I don't feel that way in 2018. Venice, and the other places listed above are hell-holes where to stay sane you have to plan to get and stay away from the sites that you came to see in the first place. Go see the Sistine Chapel? They should make every Rick Steves' employee do that once a year. It's a miserable half-day where you end up hating humanity."

If I had written a perfect script for how this trip would go, it couldn't have been any better. This was our first trip to Europe which was a very memorable one in Northern Italy. Thoroughly enjoyed our tour guide, Amanda, and her information that she shared with all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I felt that the most enjoyable moments where the smaller villages. Lake Como is my favorite part with its views of the lake from the castle above. The larger cities where a little too crowded (Florence, Rome). Not as enjoyable but good experiences to see and the history was awesome."

This was my first "tour" ...what a great experience. I have used RS books for other travels but what a nice way to go...not having to worry about lodging and ground transportation. The ease of moving from one place to another was simple and effortless for us travelers.... making the trip itself more memorable. Our travel manager was so helpful and well informed it made the entire trip a great experience.

I was a bit apprehensive about my first trip to Europe. We had a blast, there was a couple of times we had a language problem but we worked it out. We only wished that we could have spent more time in each city. Only getting 1-1/2 days in each city wasn't enough. We saw what was on our bucket list for each city, but there was so much more to see. Amanda gave us so many ideas of where to go and what to eat in each region/city. We just needed more time.

"The "Wow" moment for me was the first group dinner. OMG, never in my life have I had so much great food and wine. Ristorante il Paminello Best.Ever. Very satisfied with the entire tour. I had never been to Europe or on a tour...liked being able to do what we chose to do in each city. Even though it was a busy two weeks, I never felt exhausted. The size of the tour group was great, good opportunities to get to know each individual. Ready to visit Italy again and redo some of the cities.... Couldn't be happier with my experience. Wonderful tour manager, Amanda.

This was an excellent way to see Italy. Since this was not my first time to Italy, but it was my travel partner's first time, it was a great refresher for me and a wonderful first experience for her. The only unpleasant part was moving every other day. A couple of days (3 nights) in 1 or 2 stops would have made it more enjoyable, and not so exhausting. It was nice, however, to have the freedom to spend our time as we wished and not be obliged to follow the entire group on guided tours.

"Not technically part of our tour, but our tour manager, Amanda, told us about the Pentecost Sunday celebration at the Pantheon where the local firefighters on the roof of the Pantheon drop rose petals through the oculus at the conclusion of mass at noon. Loved the ease of the My Way structure, and Amanda was really friendly, competent, and helpful. I don't think I would do it again, though, where there are that many stops over that period of time. It was frankly exhausting. If a My Way structure was offered with even 3 nights in any stop, it would make a huge difference. Fewer towns, better experience at each place.

I totally enjoyed the trip, but I decided I prefer the quiet cities of Assisi and Varenna over the hustle and bustle of the major cities. It was a vacation to remember with an evening gondola ride, castle viewing, beautiful artwork galore, Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo David and much, much more. I would definitely do another Rick Steve's tour to another country in Europe.

"How to single out one, probably when in Assisi at the Bascila of San Francisco we were going downstairs to see St Francis' Tomb and as best as I can tell there was a service going on in the small chapel where young novices were taking their first vows and were later greeted by older nuns and priests. Pictures were being taken and hugs were going around. We could tell that we were at a special occasion, though no one was speaking English."

All the cities we toured were very beautiful. I know you are not responsible for that but the selection was great. It went beyond going to pisa and rome but it included also many smaller cities that are not well known. I would completely trust you to plan my next tour. "How does one answer that when the entire trip was amazing? Venice, Rome, and Florence speak for themselves while the contrasting "quieter" areas of Lake Como, Cinque Terre, and Assisi provided a bit of respite for the soul. The hotels were very good, the breakfasts were wonderful, our driver was professional, efficient, and friendly, the coach was very clean, The destinations were planned so that we had some low key places to rest up for the big cities. The My Way format was perfect for us, to give us the flexibility to visit the places and experience the things we were interested in. We enjoyed the people on the tour, and the flexibility to engage at our choosing.

"My favorite experience was the hike from Volostra to Corniglia high in the farm terraced hills. We took the shuttle from Manarola to Volostra, asked the lady in the hotel if she would make us a prosciutto and cheese sandwich with chips, received encouragement from an American at the shuttle stop who loved this hike. We felt alive and excited to be in this unspoiled area of Italy with the beautiful steep hills and valleys with awesome views of the sea and towns of the Cinque Terre."

It was a very enjoyable tour. The cities selected were great, the bus transportation worked well, and with one exception (see below) the hotels were very good.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were at least two: the view from the Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna and the American Cemetery in Greve/Florence. The Hotel Royal Victoria has a commanding view of Lake Como and the breakfast room gets the benefit of a great view combined with a very good breakfast. The stop at the American Cemetery was very moving and a sobering experience, but it was one of the highlights."

Overall an excellent tour. We enjoyed the smaller cities more than the large cities but that is personal preference. The bus was clean and our driver, Sauro, was very professional and is excellent at his driving skills. Cynthia, our tour guide, was also excellent and we have provided further information below.

"Our hike in Cinque Terre with the view of the Ligurian Sea was amazing and something we will never forget. We made a stop in the WWII cemetery near Florence that was also very moving and will have me doing more reading and research on our participation in this area during WWII."

The tour was very well planned and carried out. If anything there needed to be more time in each place! Bus riding travel between stops was well planned and executed and time efficient. The tour gave us everything we needed to then go and explore and plan our own adventures and outings. Any questions we had, Cynthia handled and gave such excellent feedback and support. To have the hotels, luggage transfers, and travel taken care of truly helped us have a tour that was "our" way.

"Hiking on the Cinque Terre trails was absolutely breathtaking. Also, to visit Assisi and experience the place of the birth of Francis was very special. It is hard to pick a favorite, as we were very happy with each place. We also loved the beauty of the Lake Como area."

All aspects of the tour Italy My Way were well organized and [INVALID]d in a precise manner. Our guide, Don, was very experienced and personable to our group and to us individually. No question or request was ignored. He found the time to explain what he felt was best for us in that particular location. I had a fantastic first trip to Italy!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our evening dinner on the last night was special because Don made us feel like one large family instead of 28 travelers. Seeing the Cinque Terra for the first time was a wow moment. The sights we encountered in all our stops made this tour very memorable."

Great itinerary. Nice mix of cities and smaller towns. We had never been on a tour before since I really enjoy the planning / research process. Didn't know what to expect but so appreciated having the centrally located hotels already arranged as well as transportation. Mario navigated the bus beautifully in some tight areas. Don provided us with SO much information. We were fortunate to have great weather!

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your online customer account. About one month prior to the tour departure, in your customer account you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Venice and out of Rome ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
