Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Venice

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our Venice hotel, deeply nestled amidst the canals, bridges, and alleyways of this magical, preserved-in-amber city. After introductions, we'll set off on an orientation walk and then enjoy getting acquainted over a traditional Venetian dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Venice.

Day 2: Historic Venice

Our local guide will join us this morning for a historical walking tour — with a modern Venetian's-eye view — through the backstreets of Venice, ending in St. Mark's Square and the shimmering, mosaic-filled Basilica (when available). Along the way, we'll learn about the city's remarkable past and its challenging future. The afternoon and evening are free to explore the imposing Doge's Palace, take in a church concert, waltz on St. Mark's Square, or pub-crawl your way through this unique city.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Venice.

Day 3: Venice's Accademia Gallery and Lagoon

This morning we'll have our first real brush with the Renaissance — Venetian style — with a tour of the Accademia's treasure trove of great Venetian art, starring Titian, Veronese, Bellini, Tintoretto…and every shade of color imaginable. Then it's all aboard for a cruise into Venice's lagoon on our private boat. We'll visit your guide's favorite island, where you'll have free time to explore and enjoy lunch on your own. After returning, we'll set you free to discover Venice's other famous sights and find dinner on your own in the tangled maze of alleys and trattorias. Tonight, we'll regroup for a classic, romantic gondola ride through Venice's moonlit canals.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Venice.

Day 4: Wonders of Renaissance Florence

We'll drive straight to Florence this morning and hit the ground walking with a Renaissance tour of the city's historic center. We'll learn about Brunelleschi's magnificent cathedral dome, Ghiberti's Baptistery doors, and other creations that helped define this world-changing era. Tonight we'll share a hearty Tuscan dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Florence.

Day 5: The Backstreets of Florence

A local scholar will join us this morning as we take a walking tour of the backstreets of Florence, with some fascinating peeks into Roman, medieval, and 19th-century Florentine life along the way. After exploring the highlights of the Bargello Museum, we'll continue our tour across the river, where we'll create today's tasty lunch during a fun and informative cooking class. Your afternoon will be free to see more of the city's museums.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Florence.

Day 6: The Uffizi and David

This morning we'll devote our time to the breathtaking Renaissance art of the Uffizi — home to the finest collection of Italian paintings anywhere — including works by Leonardo, Botticelli, Michelangelo, and more. After some free time to make your own Florentine discoveries, we'll gather again this evening at the Accademia Gallery to marvel at the power of Michelangelo's rough-hewn Prisoners and his greatest masterpiece, David.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Florence.

Day 7: Wine Tasting, Rome at Night

This morning we'll drive into the rolling hills of Umbria, stopping for a wine tasting lunch at a family-run winery. We'll then make a beeline for Rome, where we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk on our way to tonight's dinner together. We'll end our day as any good Roman would — with a stroll through the historic heart of the city, lacing together the classy Piazza Navona, splashy Trevi Fountain, and in the remarkably preserved, 2,000-year-old Pantheon (when available).

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Rome.

Day 8: The Vatican Museums and St. Peter's

Today we'll focus on Renaissance (Catholic) Rome. At the sprawling Vatican Museums, we'll visit what seems like a limitless collection of treasures as you make your way to one of the world's most famous works of art: Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. We'll then be introduced to the greatest church in Christendom: the awe-inspiring St. Peter's Basilica, home to Michelangelo's sublime Pietà. The rest of your day is free to wander through this immense church and explore more of the Eternal City on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 9: Monuments of Ancient Rome

We'll spend our morning uncovering ancient Rome, starting with a tour of multi-layered San Clemente — a 12th-century church sitting atop a fourth-century basilica and a previous Roman temple. Then we'll tour and hear vivid tales of the larger-than-life Colosseum and the birthplace of ancient Rome: the Forum. You'll be free this afternoon to wander through the nearby Palatine ruins, visit St. Peter-in-Chains Church (home to Michelangelo's Moses), or climb to the top of the Victor Emmanuel Monument to enjoy a panoramic city view. Tonight we'll feast together at our farewell dinner, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salute!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Rome.

Day 10: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Rome's airports by taxi or train. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Arrivederci!

On the plus side, the tour was very well organized to allow us to see all the major sights in a short period of time. We got to nearly everything before the crowds. On the negative side, it was grueling, with way too much time wasted walking, and the tour leader grossly underestimated distances--2 blocks was 20 minutes, etc.

This tour WAS as advertised. That is a rare thing today’s world. Our tour guide, (Margaret Cassidy), and the tour company policies WERE more generous to us, (the clients), than was to be expected. Our tour guide - Lisa Smith - was excellent! She did a marvelous job! She kept our group well informed of the daily activities & provided us with ideas for additional places to visit during our free time. We were very impressed with all of our tour guides throughout the trip but their was one that stood out the most - Francesca in Rome! She was the best hands down! "There were several. Going around a corner and seeing the ruins of where Julius Caesar was murdered. Our local expert putting the carnage of the Coliseum in perspective. But the most unexpected gift was the detour to Marco's Poggio della Volara in Umbria. When I saw that stop on the itinerary I rolled my eyes and thought it would be a poor use of our limited time. I feel enriched and intellectually satisfied by gaining a peek into the history/context around Venice and Florence beyond just visiting the famous tourist hotspots. I have a much better grasp for the Renaissance history, art, personnel. It is fascinating. I had little knowledge about Byzantine time before the trip. Now Byzantine, Renaissance, Old Roman time stood up 3D rather than words in history books; a better appreciation for effort of human Sapiens in pushing forward civilization.

Patricia was great and extremely helpful-reason rating good and not adequate. Several events and local guides good. Stress and cost associated w/Covid test requirement unnecessary and mean spirited given YOU dropped it effective May 1. Really BAD welcome dinner in Venice. Poor travel advice from Rick Steves re: packing and day packs (not allowed in majority of sites). Museum visits not laid out for effective use of time especially in Florence. Not inclined to take another Rick Steves tour.

"Poggio della Volara (agria tourism stop). I would actually book for a stay. Hosts wonderful & explained operation and work involved in farming (my formal training is agricultural finance). Meal was wonderful, wine food pairing really worked. Dog was super cute and friendly. Second was in Tavola cooking academy in Florence mainly because we were the group of six in the kitchen w/the Chef and could tell the difference in dishes prepared under his supervision vs other chef who had bulk of group."

We had the most exceptional guide on our tour. Tina is as passionate about travel as Rick Steves, she was simply amazing. We have traveled in Europe on river boat cruises and enjoyed them but this trip took travel to a whole new level. We plan to book another Rick Steves tour next year!

The tour was a truly fantastic experience. I have never been on a guided tour before, and this shattered my expectations in a profoundly positive fashion. It's been a childhood dream of mine to visit Italy, and I can sincerely say there's no way I would have gotten any where near as much out of a trip across Europe without having been part of the Rick Steves tour. It was educational, informative, and very fun. Tina was incredible; she's an absolute expert at what she does. Just tremendous.

"My experience in Florence overall has to take the cake. In specific for me, though, I have never been more moved by a painting in my entire life than I was by Maestro Della Madonna Straus's Christ as the Man of Sorrows with the Symbols of the Passion. I saw it just by chance by going upstairs after seeing a real Stradivarius violin and the statue of David (both of which were unbelievable, to be clear) at the Galleria dell'Accademia, where it blindsided me and actually brought me to tears."

Tour: 04/04/22

Overall rating: rating 4 of 5

Overall, it was an excellent tour and I am glad that I chose the tour. I didn't give the tour an outstanding rating because I sometimes experienced the tour as being so full of activities that I didn't have any time to savour the special or meaningful moments of the tour until long after an event. I sometimes felt quite rushed. One good thing is that I now know that my current tour style is that, I want to see a lot more of a lot less, so that I have time to "savour the moment".

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the night time gondola ride in Venice. Taking a gondola ride is considered to be a "must do" while one is in Venice. I thought of it as being a rather overly touristy thing. I was wrong. Experiencing the canals and the ride as dusk turned to night and seeing how the buildings and bridges are lighted at night all while surrounded by the water is an experience that I will remember with pleasure for a long time."

This trip gave me the opportunity to see most of the sights on my bucket list and also provided plenty of other experiences that were unexpectedly fun (gondola ride, trip to the olive grove and wine tasting, Italian cooking class). New places, new friends, new adventures! Paired this tour with 11 days on our own in Italy and are very happy with the result. The tour brought us to do things that we probably wouldn't have done on our own: e.g.: musical gondola ride at night, cuttlefish in ink, wine tasting and the cooking school. The orientation walks and guided walks were outstanding as was Jamie. We also really liked the other tour group members. A wonderful experience providing lifetime memories.

It was a great way to visit the three cities that I wanted to see. There was a good balance of tour time to free time to do as we liked with good suggestions on what to see. The tour book was very helpful. The hotels in Florence and Rome were great but not centrally located to the places we visited. The hotel in Venice left a lot to be desired even though it was in the middle of Venice. The food for breakfast was very limited compared to the other two hotels.

The goal of this trip was to enjoy Gelato in Italy as I made my 60th trip around the sun, while taking in the magic of Venice, the beauty of Florence and the history of Rome, but most importantly introducing my husband, who recently acquired a passport, to the thrills of traveling internationally. It was even better than I had imagined. Knowing my goals, a friend advised we check out a Rick Steves trip, and I am so glad she did.

I very much appreciate the "style" of the tour; starting the day out early-ish with a hearty breakfast and an activity, learning how the public transportation works, some language lessons and reminders about local customs and polite behavior, free time most every day, the meals together introducing and celebrating, the private group transportation between sites, the VOX capability, the local guides and the Rick Steves guide.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was the cooking (and eating) extravaganza with Fabrisio. I am barely functional in the kitchen and I learned how Great Italian food is made. I may never use these skills and I will remember the fun I had kneading and mixing and chopping and laughing AND eating and drinking good local wine as well. I've probably never eaten fresh pasta until this trip and I really appreciate it. My second WOW is how awesome Michelangelo was. And the progression of art 12th cent to now"

This was our first experience traveling with a tour group. The itinerary had us in each city for three nights. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Venice was amazing and by far, my favorite part of our trip. The fact that there are no cars on the island allows the streets to be somewhat like a maze. Meaning, you can be walking down a very narrow street and all of a sudden another street appears and if you walk down that street, you get to see a whole other set of shops, cafes, vendors, piazzas, etc."

We loved the tour, it was exactly what I had hoped. I loved that we had our own guide and guides that were specific to sites we toured. It helped us get the most out of each setting. We also had plenty of free time with suggestions for things to see and do. There were opportunities such as private wine tastings and cooking classes that we would not have arranged for ourselves. All hotels had great locations.

We had a great tour guide in Lisa. Because she grew up in the US and has lived in Italy for many years, she was able to see Italy through our eyes. She understood what we needed to see and know about Italy. The trip was strenuous, we expected that. There was a lot of walking, particularly in Venice and Florence. We arrived at the start of the second highest flood in Venice history. Our guide had to make many adjustments and did so seamlessly. Some events were cancelled (hard to view a church or island under water), others added. Our overall experience in Venice was first rate. To see the resilience of the people of Venice was an amazing experience. Rome and Florence were all we expected from a RS tour - and more. Our guide was knowledgeable on Italian history and culture. Very enjoyable.

"While there were many, to me the best moments were during the well prepped for free time in each city. Rainer spent the time to make us comfortable in our explorations, helped with great suggestions and directions, and set us free. I also thought the local guides were brilliant. The cooking lesson in Florence was fun and interesting and the wine drinking at the winery was educational."

I was quite worried about our arrival in Venice as I heard just the night before about the terrible flood. I was surprised to see the sun shining and the city dry and full of life. With the rubber boots that the hotel provided, and a bit of an education about the tides that come and go each day we had an unforgettable vacation and a greater understanding of the life of the robust, persevering Venetians.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had wow moments daily when I saw buildings that were over a thousand years old and stayed in hotels that were built in 13th century. Fantastic. We also enjoyed our tour group very much. Venice, Florence, and Rome are each filled to the brim with charm, art, architecture, incredible cuisine, shopping, and unique neighborhoods to explore. The tour provides balance between structured group activities and time to explore independently. Spending 3 nights in each city gave us time to understand each city's unique offerings, as well as it's historical significance. We traveled in November. Yes, it rained, but the payoff was easy access to view art and historical sites that we visited

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Each day was a gem, but entering the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence and seeing Michelangelo's David was sublime. Our November tour meant that our visit was off-season. That evening, we were the only tour group in the museum. I took a whole series for photographs from all angles. It was one of those moments when I thought, "Wow! How many people have the opportunity to be in the presence of this spellbinding statue without feeling crowded or rushed?""

The high tides in Venice were quite amazing! The lessons in Italian history, the Renaissance, and the contrasts between North and South made me feel I had really gotten a sense of Italy. I know it was only a quick skim of the high points, but I loved the experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Touring in Venice during Acqua Alta was quite the experience! We felt part of a historic time there. All went very well during the very high tides. However, when we first heard about the record (187 cm) tide, the day before we were scheduled to depart, we were freaked out! We called the Hotel, and they said come on, that they could provide boots. It would have been better if you had contacted us to give some help with the situation."

The elements of the tour, followed closely if not literally, the tour description described in the Rick Steves (RS) promotional material. Substitutions to the stated agenda were at times necessary and appropriate. That said, there is always an opportunity to improve. Hotels: The Venice and the Florence hotels did not meet my expectations. Both were cramped and did not meet the standards of furnishing and electronic access as the we have experienced with other tour companies (VBT).

It was wonderful! Stephanie was a great guide and more than that, a host, through these enchanting cities. The trip experience was excellent in all ways: the itinerary, was a perfect balance of museum, walking the cities, guided/free time. I am always impressed on a RS tour with the outstanding attention to being prepared but then being able to adjust with unknowns; for example of the planned, the ticketed sites always go without a hitch - tour guides (local and RS)are well coordinated and make it look easy. For the unexpected, had a bit of heavy rain on some occasion and our leader got us taxis.

Our 2nd RS Tour did not disappoint! We did not have time to research much before arriving, but the expert tour guides provided pertinent background every step of the way. Loved all the walking! 8 miles/day on most days! Lovely group of people to journey with; much better accommodations than I would have arranged had I planned this on my own; a very rich "menu" of sights and experiences; and free time to wander. Loved being there in October with fewer crowds and mid-70's weather.

Those experiences provided a foundation to appreciate what we were seeing throughout our tour - and all 3 were away from big crowds!"

Overall I enjoyed this trip. However, there were quite a number of issues with it. For one, this is the first escorted tour I have ever taken that did not include airport transfers. I realize that many people do arrive or depart after the scheduled tour dates, but for those that do not, airport transfers should be included. First time I have been on a tour. I visited Florence & Venice years ago as a college student, on the $5 day budget. I wanted to go back as an adult & enjoy proper hotels. The guides sharing all the history made the tour fascinating & brought it alive. Not speaking Italian & being handicapped gave me a feeling of being an easy target. The calibre of the guides and the contextual history, art, and cultural perspectives of each city they provided were without parallel. Florence has remained vital because it has revitalized its historic grandeur and envelops the visitor in a comforting pastiche of old and new graciousness. This was our first Rick Steve's tour and I can say without hesitation that we would do another. Our hotels were better than expected as they were very accommodating as there were three in our party. The trip was well organized and Julian was very helpful with his tips of heading to St.Peter's early in the morning and other sites we could see in our free time and changing our trip to the Vatican allowed us to be there with lighter crowds, which was deeply appreciated.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Sistine Chapel and the architecture in each of the cities was truly amazing. To be able to accomplish what they did and have it remain after all these years, is astounding. Other votes from the family were the gondola ride, Michelangelo's David, and the Colosseum. And the 6:30A.M. walk to St.Peter's Basilica was exciting and refreshing. The amazing part was that the majority of our tour group decided to take on this endeavor when it was an 'on your own' experience!"

I wasn't sure what to expect, as this was my first tour. I was very pleased with the overall experience; the combinion of sights to visit, the hotels chosen for our stay, the local guides used when needed, etc. Our Rick Steves tour guide, Julian, was a fantastic host and also turned out to be a wonderful story-teller during those bus trips to the next city. I would recommend this trip to anyone seeking to immerse themselves into the art and history of three of the most important cities in Ita

"My favorite "wow" moment happened at the most unlikely place for me. Though I am not a wine drinker, I was happy to have the experience of visiting a winery and learning a little about wine tasting and pairings. Upon arriving at the site, however, I was simply awestruck by the beauty of the region and the historic charm of the family's home. I can see why many people consider this area of Italy to be the most beautiful."

This was our 2nd Rick Steve's tour the first being Ireland. Our overall experience was fantastic. We embraced the culture, history, and camaraderie of our group. Julian's unbelievable knowledge of history and culture, the local guides, the balance of organized tours and "on our own time" adventures was perfect. We felt sorry for the thousands of people waiting in line as we scooted through. The hotel accommodations were just right for us and the employees of those hotels very helpful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was an "on our own" visit to St. Peter's cathedral in Rome, awakening at 5:45 to walk 2 miles to avoid crowds. Ironically, it was my wife Jill a Lutheran who felt it was important for me to see the birthplace of my Catholic faith. We returned Sunday for an outdoor Mass by Pope Francis for the canonization of 5 new saints. After the Mass, Pope Francis rode in the Pope mobile around the piazza and I was able to get a picture from 20 ft. away!"

This was our 1st organized tour and it exceeded our expectations. Knowing it was our first trip to Italy, the popularity of these 3 cities, and the congestion of some of the major sites we tried this tour. We found visiting the major sites as a group was convenient and the agenda offered ample time to explore on our own each day. Julian, who is an exceptional storyteller, and the other wonderful local guides brought the arts, architecture, culture, and cuisine alive.

Another great group of Rick Steve devotees , traveling the countryside making friends along the way. Simply imagine 25 aging hippies, getting lost on their return trip from Woodstock, wandering the back alleys of ancient cities.Everything you read in the brochures is true. If you are easily annoyed because you have to walk 4 uneven, narrow sidewalks to get from the bus to your hotel, this is not the tour for you. We all did it and and had a great time trying to keep up with Julian.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was our first international vacation and we were a bit apprehensive. We wrestled with doing it on our own but after much research, we opted for Rick Steve's and we are thrilled we did so. The tour took care of the general planning and tickets for key events, buses between cities and some of the meals. In essence, Rick Steve's created the skeleton of the trip but there was plenty of time for us to "flesh out" the rest of our experience.

We have traveled to Venice, Florence and Rome before. Often with Rick Steves Tours. The history, the cuisine, the people, the churches, the vistas, the countryside have so much to offer those who want to enjoy and soak up the culture. You can never spend too much time in Italy. Just when you think you have seen so much, you are surprised by how much you haven't. We will travel back again (hopefully many times)

It was a great experience. The schedule of events was well coordinated and effectively balanced with free time. This tour was so well organized that I can't begin to tell everyone what a relief it was to "be taken care of" by our tour leader, Dave. We all felt "safe" in this new environment. I did this same trip on my own in 2001 (9/11/2001 in Venice!) and planning and navigating three weeks in these three cities was exhausting. I will always use Rick Steves tour groups when traveling abroad. No question!

"1) The gondola ride at night in Venice ( I sang "O Solo Mio" from our gondola.) 2) The water rising into Saint Mark's Square in the early afternoon. 3) The most devastating rich sinful chocolate flavor I have ever tasted in any food, a gelato in a small little street of Venice. 4) Our cooking class in Florence, what an adventure! A wonderful experience from beginning to end! The Venice-Florence-Rome tour offers a wide variety of experiences that makes it appealing to both the art and architecture lovers as well as those interested in regional cooking, interacting with locals, learning about farming and wineries, etc. The other plus is having a lot of independent time almost every day of the tour to explore on your own or to rest up for the next tour activity.

We found this tour to be so much more than sightseeing and having logistics taken care of. Because of the special connections with the guides, the people and places we visited, and the experiences arranged for us, it was a life-changing experience. We will never see the world in quite the same way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our favorite must be a gondola ride celebrating our marriage in Venice 30 years ago. While she never admitted to it, we're pretty sure our guide, Sarah, arranged for a wonderful accordion player and a beautiful female opera singer to ride along with us, playing Italian music and singing all the way around. My husband and I will remember it for the rest of our lives. However a very close second was the amazing Tuscan family-style dinner in Florence. It may have been the best meal of my life."

This was our 3rd Rick Steves tour and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Elena was our guide and she was extraordinary. Even after she got run over by the scooter in Florence she still soldiered on. Elena is funny, bright and very knowledgeable. Again the tour was the right mix of group time and free time. The other members of our tour were all wonderful people and everyone got along great. I really enjoyed our time in Italy and meeting some of the natives.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We visited a winery that had been in the same family for 150 years and had a 1/3 of a mile long wine cellar that was started by the Etruscans and expanded by every group thereafter. It had a 17th century chapel and while in the chapel one of our group members used the wonderful acoustics to sing a hymn in the chapel. It was deeply moving to be in that place with one of our folks spontaneously being inspired to sing. Didn't hurt that she has a marvelous voice."

We had a wonderful time. Elena was simply the best. Very fun and attentive to our needs. Our local guides were also excellent! Enjoyed all the incredible sights. Love having all the arrangements made for us, so we can just relax and enjoy. Love the split of time between group activities and free time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many wow moments! The Coliseum, the Forum. Perhaps the most inspiring moment was seeing the statue of David. I stared at him for at least half an hour. The whole Uffizi museum was incredible. Venice as a whole was a wow."

Tour was about what I expected from Rick Steve's tour and I highly recommend it. Enjoyed walking tour and free time to explore around. I will use Rick Steve's tour again in the future.

Elena is fantastic, she's funny, caring, inclusive, and always cheerful. Because the group is small, and the guides are local, we had experiences we couldn't get on our own. We rarely waited in line, even at the most popular places There is so much free time, I was able to explore the things I was interested in, and had enough time to relax and get to know local life. These are some of the best memories of the trip! I'm already planning my next trip!

Thoroughly enjoyable overall. An outstanding guide plus a compatible group of people. Things I wasn't particularly interested in (e.g., a Venice gondola ride arranged by our guide and a cooking class in Florence) turned out to be great fun. Got to go many places I had for a long time wanted to see.

Favorite "WOW" moment

Excellent in every way. The 10 day tour was long enough but not too long. Our guide made the trip relaxed and comfortable from day 1. I like that each day there were things we did as a group yet we also had plenty of free time to explore on your own or rest up in your hotel. Each of our hotels were located near the things we wanted to see. We learned so much about each city and there were many things to see we had not expected. A favorite day was the winery visit in Umbria.

This was our first experience with a guided tour. We were hesitant at first because we previously traveled in Europe on our own and enjoyed ourselves. We should not have been concerned. The tour was awesome- a great mix of guided tour time and time to explore on our own. Having the room reservations and travel logistics handled was great- it made travel in a new country SO much easier. Our guide Margaret was simply outstanding (more below)!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Of the 3 cities, Venice surprised us the most. It is truly unlike anything else- we did not appreciate it fully until we saw it for ourselves. Seeing an entire city operating on the water is a real cultural disconnect from Colorado! Others told us and we agree that the city is itself a museum. Amazing. Also, our visit to the US Cemetery at Florence was a very nice extra stop. We have relatives who served in WW-2 and have visited the cemeteries at Normandy. We liked this very much."

It begins with the meet and greet at the Hotel on the first day. This was not our first Rick Steves Tour so we knew how things were going to be laid out in the meeting, but the enthusiasm and instant friendliness of the entire group started this tour off on the most positive direction possible. The group dinner that night, was such a fun time, I'm sure a few local heads turned in our direction. What a way to begin a ten day dream trip.

The tour pretty much followed the outline so we knew what to spect on any given day. The walking was not exaggerated and we are daily walkers which helped immensely. This tour was amazing! I was sorry to see it come to an end, but it was nice to sleep in my own bed. Many years ago, in college, my minor was in Renaissance Art History. Visiting Venice, Florence and Rome was a dream come true. I was speechless standing in front of Michelangelo's David or Botticelli's Birth of Venus. This was not just a crawl through Art and History! This tour opened my eyes to the culture of Italy and to the people who call Italy home.

She organized a special 25th Anniversary event as part of the tour and we were able to celebrate with all of our new friends in the group. The thoughtfulness brought me to tears! The timing of 3 days/city was perfect, the pace was appropriate (strenuous as expected!), the hotels were in great locations, the food was great and tours were extremely informative.

"I really enjoyed the Italian Cooking class! Cooking is not my forte and is actually way out of my comfort zone. I would not have "signed up" for a cooking class but since it was included in the tour I participated. I'm so glad I did! The class was informative, fun (not at all stressful for us who don't cook) and yummy. I enjoyed the class and the food we learned to make. I understand now that "food is love" for Italians. I enjoyed sharing our meals with our fellow travelers. So much fun!!"

When To Go & Weather

Italy's three greatest cities are a delight to visit any time of year. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with the most pleasant weather. Visiting between November and March offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cool and crisp weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don’t include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Venice (VCE) and out of Rome (FCO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Italy.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Italy guidebook.
