Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Portugal

We'll gather at our Lisbon hotel at 5 p.m. for a short meeting, followed by an orientation walk through our neighborhood and a "Welcome to Portugal" dinner together. Sleep in Lisbon (3 nights). No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Neighborhoods of Lisbon

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Lisbon's colorful downtown neighborhoods — the Bairro Alto, the Alfama, and the Baixa. Along the way we'll learn about "village" Lisbon's neighborhood life, the poetry of the revered Fernando Pessoa, and Portugal's "Carnation Revolution," which peacefully ended nearly five decades of fascist rule in 1974. You'll have the rest of your afternoon free to visit any of Lisbon's "niche" museums (tile, fado, port wine, and other Portuguese specialties). Tonight we'll regroup and enjoy a soulful fado performance with dinner. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Seafaring Belém and the Gulbenkian

We'll begin our day with a bus tour through Lisbon to its seafaring Belém District, home to many of the city's most historic buildings. Sticking close to the waterfront, we'll learn about Portugal's golden age of exploration at the heroic Monument to the Discoveries, and how faith, money, and a knack for sailing combined to build the dazzling Monastery of Jerónimos. Then we'll take in the view from Edward VII Park before ending at the world-class Gulbenkian Museum, where we'll see how an international oil tycoon assembled a priceless art collection spanning 5,000 years. You'll have the evening free to continue to explore the museum or return to Lisbon for dinner on your own. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Historic Évora

Today we'll head east to the laid-back Alentejo countryside and the history-rich university town of Évora. We'll take a walking tour of Évora's preserved-in-whitewash old section, marveling at its Corinthian-columned Roman Temple and its macabre Chapel of Bones. As you'll discover in your free afternoon and evening, Évora has a world-apart feel to it that really connects you with traditional Portugal. Sleep in Évora (1 night). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Olives, Oaks, and Óbidos

This morning begins with a memorable visit to a working farm and estate. We'll have a chance to meet farming locals and taste-test their olive oil. Then we'll wander through their forest of cork oaks, learning how the bark is harvested and how it's being regulated today. We'll cap off our visit with lunch together, including some of the estate's wines. This afternoon we'll follow the sun as we make our way to the medieval walled town of Óbidos. Upon arrival we'll take an orientation walk through the perfectly preserved cobblestone streets and learn why this is known as Portugal's "wedding city." Sleep in Óbidos (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 6: Royal Intrigue, Alcobaça, and Nazaré

We'll begin today with a visit in Alcobaça to tour the ornate Baroque-Gothic Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria, where we'll hear the star-crossed story of King Pedro and his doomed mistress, Inês. Later we'll enjoy some fun in the sun in the old coastal fishing village of Nazaré. Splash in the waters of the Atlantic, sample the local specialty — barnacles — or take the funicular up to the historic Sítio neighborhood to enjoy its sweeping cliff-top views. This evening we'll return to Óbidos for dinner on your own. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Batalha and Fátima

We'll continue our journey north, stopping in Batalha to visit its grand Monastery of Santa María, a symbol of Portuguese pride and its victory (with help from English archers) over Spanish domination 600 years ago. Then we'll visit the nearby pilgrimage site of Fátima — a favorite of Pope John Paul II — where three children shared controversial visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. This afternoon, our destination is Portugal's historic capital of Coimbra, where we'll tour the city's maze of narrow lanes and its steeped-in-tradition 700-year-old university. The palatial university library — with 30,000 books from the 18th century — is like nothing you've seen before. We'll end our day with dinner together in the heart of the Old Town. Sleep in Coimbra (2 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Classic Coimbra

This morning we'll journey back to Portugal's ancient Roman past, wandering the evocative remains and perfectly preserved mosaics of once-prosperous Conímbriga. The rest of your day will be free back in Coimbra for making more discoveries on your own. Tonight we'll rendezvous for a performance of Coimbra's unique style of fado…more likely devoted to revolutionary student ideals than lost love. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Douro Wine Country

We'll drive to Portugal's most famous wine-making region today: the lush, green Douro Valley, where we'll visit an old family estate and winery (quinta) with spectacular views of the surrounding valley. It's a perfect chance to learn all about the proud art of making fine Port — and taste it too! Later in the afternoon we'll make our way to our hotel with all evening free to relax and watch the sun set over the Douro River. Sleep in the Douro Valley (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 10: Vineyard Views and Porto

Today we'll travel through terraced wine country on our way to the port city of Porto. On arrival in this rustic Portuguese San Francisco, we'll take a panoramic bus tour of Porto's classy neighborhoods, dynamic downtown, and bustling port. After checking in to our hotel, a savvy guide will show us how to explore the city through our taste buds with a sampling of delicious local cuisine, teaching us about history, architecture, and culture along the way. We'll end our day with a relaxing cruise on the Douro River (weather permitting). Sleep in Porto (2 nights). Boat: ¾ hour. Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Savoring Proud Porto

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Porto's riverfront Ribeira district, including the lavish rooms of its Stock Exchange Palace, the exquisitely gilded Church of São Francisco, and São Bento train station. Then you'll have time to wander on your own through Porto's lively city center — or seek out some more sipping at an old port-wine lodge. This evening we'll enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Saúde! No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 12: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Your guide will help steer you to Porto's airport, which is an easy metro or taxi ride away. Or you may want to stay for further Portuguese adventures on your own. Adeus!

I can't say enough about our guide, Fatima. She made us all feel like family. She's bright, funny and energetic. The trip was well orchestrated with a wonderful mix of culture and history. We weren't overwhelmed with facts and figures but rather allowed to fall in love with Portugal slowly with exposure to the people there, the pride and love of country they exhibited, with the knowledge of some of the struggles and challenges they've endured.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many wow moments but the time at the cork farm and meeting the family and enjoying lunch with them was truly special. The Roman Ruins in Conimbriga were a real surprise. Learning about the traditions of the students in Coimbra and being there as they were robes and set to graduate make it even more special. Also, both Fado performances were really special."

Fátima was amazing, This was our fourth Rick Steve's tour and all our guides have been great, but Fátima was exceptional ! We loved Portugal and are recommending this trip to everyone. Portugal is a wonderful country and Fátima is the perfect guide to show it off. Her personal involvement in every aspect of the trip was very much appreciated. When we went to the hotel where Fátima had the room decorated with hearts and bottle of champagne waiting for us. Thanks for a great trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Many: Visiting Fátima on our 30 year wedding anniversary and having our guide surprise us with a blessing from one of the priests there. We were extremely touched by this . Visiting the cork farm , Rovisco Garcia and having lunch with the owners. Wine tasting at Quinta Santa in the Douro Valley."

Fatima was the best tour guide. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her nation, Portugal. She went out of her way to make the trip the best ever. I enjoyed her conversation about all the many interesting topics. She was quite informative. The group was very cohesive, bonding almost the first day. Everyone was eager to participate and contribute to whatever event or subject that arose. We even had extra parties and everyone brought wine, cheese, bread, and fruit.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Although the whole trip was a woow, the group itself was a woow. As to sights they all were great. The sight that moved me the most emotionally was in Fatima. Seeing those women crying on their knees and headed to the church was a tear jerker."

Fatima walks on water. What an amazing person she is. I loved her history lectures as we walked and drove through Portugal. She also gave us political commentary as well that was enlightening. There are not enough positive adjectives in the English language to describe her excellence. She was so kind and personable. She treated us like family and welcomed us into her country. I could not believe how she surprised us with an evening of food, song and dance in Obidos.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our surprise dinner and dancing evening on the terrace of our hotel in Obidos. Fatima had a beautiful medieval costume on and had flower crowns for the women to wear. She arranged for an accordion player and had all of us on the dance floor. We also had a wonderful appetizers and dinner."

I was the only novice Rick Steves tourist The trip seemed pricey at first but I was joining good friends. Everything far exceeded my expectations- The excellence of the experience pivoted around our guide Fatima who added the personal touch that I would miss from any trip otherwise. She brought to us a feeling for what it is to love Portugal- the country, history and people.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The visit to the cork farm. I loved the countryside -beauty and quiet. But the experience with the owner who knew so much about the economics was amazing. He clearly understood world economics and was applying principles to sustain as well as profit. He was a study in family history and how family influences you as well as a study in ongoing self taught education."

As expected, the Heart of Portugal tour provided all the hallmarks of a RS tour that I have come to appreciate and love. A big thank you to you and your team for making it possible. This is my first trip to Portugal. The tour provided me a general sense of Portugal, its landscapes, its food, its culture, its history and most important to me, its people. I totally got them from this wonderful trip. If opportunities arise in the future, I would not mind going to Portugal again.

"My "wow" moment was visiting the Roman site at Conimbriga. The unearthed mosaics hinted at so much potential and work still needed to be done. This site could rival Ephesus, Turkey in size and importance. I hope it too can become 'World Heritage' status to get more funding for preservation. This is a diamond in the rough."

We won the weather lottery, sunny, cool in mornings not too hot. Each of the hotels was perfect for the city they were in, and the staff was happy to help us whenever we needed. I felt pampered. This was our first Rick Steves trip and our guide, Maria, helped and encouraged us to be independent on the time we had on our own, 24hr rail passes, great instructions and access to good maps. The Whisper Audio system, comfortable coaches and relatively small group size added to the experience.

"Our last day in Porto we had a great time. We crossed the bridge across the Duro on the top, resting at the park Jardim do Morro. Then we went back on the lower level when a young diver jumped off the bridge. What a great day. But the killer moment was at our farewell dinner in the Palacio da Bolsa (Chamber of commerce) when the President of Portugal - Marcello Rebelo de Sousa - going to his banquet in the main hall, waved hello to us and Tour Guide Maria Jose Aleixo. We felt welcome."

Our group was congenial and fun. We laughed so much on the bus and enjoyed every moment. I loved how we got into the real Portugal with the people. The cork farm, vineyards in the Douro valley, as well as the painting experience at the pottery factory were exceptionally enjoyable. I felt we did more than just see Portugal. We experienced it. The extra free time we had most afternoons gave us an opportunity to explore on our own and try out foods and shop. And the delicious food and wine!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved Obidos, Evora, Cascais, Nazaré, and the Jeronimo Monastery! It is really hard to say that there was one "wow" moment. There were so many. I really loved the Douro valley. So beautiful! The small towns were more appealing to me than the larger cities, although Lisbon was easy to navigate. The cork farm tour and lavish luncheon with the family who owned the farm was outstanding! Loved the vineyard tour also. Painting tiles at the pottery was fun, too. Such nice people!"

I found Portugal somewhat disappointing compared to other RS tours I have been on. Especially since this tour is so popular and highly touted. The food was not that great. The annoying custom of bringing unwanted items to the table when we ate on our own was irksome. The best part of the tour was the last 4 days in northern Portugal. The first 8 days were mediocre. I suppose my critism is more of the country than the tour. Out guide was great and it was a good group of people.

This tour was unique as Portugal is a small country. Having a guide who is a native added depth to learning about the culture and traditions. You could feel Maria's love of her country. The group was great fun, the weather fantastic, and bus rides short. We visited many different places-palaces, monasteries, ruins, walled cities, a cork farm, wineries, & churches. The tiles on walls inside and out were stunning. I learned about a country I knew little about and will cherish this tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is hard to limit to one as the cork farm and the Duoro Valley were outstanding. I have to go with Fatima as it was a very moving experience for me. Walking into the huge square with the 2 churches anchoring the square took my breath away. Watching the people crawling on their knees brought me to tears. I loved seeing part of the outdoor mass and the procession of the return of the statue of Mary to the chapel with the church bells ringing. A wonderful and spiritual day for me."

I live in RI which is almost one big beach and apparently a beach town is a beach town wherever you go,

Portugal is a wonderful country to visit and this is a great tour. The tour is well-planned to cover much of the country and expose us to a variety of regions, each with slightly differing geography and climate. We learned some of Portugal's history (both ancient and more recent), politics, and economics and visited a variety of beautiful and interesting sights.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The visit to the cork farm was absolutely fascinating. The family conveyed their passion for the land and their work and were gracious and enthusiastic hosts. I never knew growing, harvesting, and selling cork could be so interesting. This reinforced my belief that RS tours provide experiences and knowledge beyond what we could do on our own. The free afternoon in the Douro Valley was also a real treat, and the tiles decorating the buildings in Lisbon, Porto, and other cities are beautiful."

Portugal is a beautiful country. It is often underrated, but offers the big city, small countryside towns, large cathedrals and intimate establishments. The people were so friendly, and always treated us with a smile. The pace was comfortable...we never seemed rushed and were able to appreciate the history, the narrow streets that wove through a city, and the people at the farms.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Leaving Coimbra, the scenery was much like that in California. But as we climbed higher, and into the Douro Valley, the terraced hillsides took our breath away. They were so manicured and clung to the hills above the river. We wondered how the vines were planted in such tight rows and places, only to be told that the terraces were decades old. The quilted hillsides were a spectacular sight. We also liked the food tour in Porto. History and food...what a combination!"

Rick Steves' tours are fabulous because of the type of people that join them. This was our second tour & again the group were very welcoming to the invading Aussies, interested in our country & lifestyle. The fact that Portugal turned on glorious weather & had so much to teach us, made this a very memorable holiday.

We had a great group of people who were all friendly, supportive and kind. Javier, our guide, was organized, informative and had the right mix of humor and empathy that a great tour guide should have. The tour itself included the right mix of large cities and small villages, seaside and country, so I felt that we got a good glimpse of the variety of Portugal.

"There were a few but I'd have to say our tour of the cork tree farm was the biggest "wow." The whole process of growing and harvesting cork was very interesting and an eye opener. Hearing about the sustainable practices of the farm was very enlightening. I also very much enjoyed the lunch afterwards....not only the food and wine....but especially the family sitting at our tables and sharing and answering questions we had. Definitely one of the highlights!"

Enjoyed towns we went to. Itinerary was good. Guide was good but talked for long periods with travelers zoning out. Would have enjoyed more free time. Hotel location was excellent. Would have liked to try more real local food rather than Americanized version. Winery visit was fun but not very educational. Cork farm tour was same. Would have liked to visit a cork factory. Pottery factory was fun.

First time on a Rick Steves tour and I was very impressed. I loved learning the history and culture of Portugal. The tours and guides were excellent. Everthing is well organized and runs like clock work. I especially enjoyed the spacious bus, it takes a lot of the stress out of traveling when the trips from town to town is handled. Even the driver was excellent. A professional with a real sense of humor. I found Portugal, to be somewhat similar to Italy but 30 to 40% of the cost.

We decided to do the Portugal tour for our 25th wedding anniversary since neither of us had ever been there and it didn't disappoint. We were never bored because of the variety of activities included and the numerous towns visited; all different in their own way. But I have to say that our guide, Fatima, really made this tour fantastic for us. She was a wealth of knowledge historically about her homeland and her personality was a total delight.

Our trip was so much fun [INVALID] from our first meeting with our group to last day. Portugal is a unique country and we were exposed to the richness of their culture, cuisine, music and history. This was our 6th RS tour and it ranked up with the best of them. Maria our guide was excellent, our fellow travelers were congenial and fun, and Portugal is a fascinating, beautiful country; forward looking and proud of its' hard won freedom after years of a dictatorship. I loved the two very different fado performances and the opportunity to explore and dine in gorgeous sites, especially in Porto and Lisbon, that I would never have discovered on my own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely our visit to the cork farm, which also produces it's own wines and olive oils. I was so impressed with the family's progressive and long range thinking re sustainability in all areas, from production to maintaining a low carbon footprint, to the way in which they cared for the trees, plants and wildlife on their land. Our Portugal trip was our 6th tour and would rate as one of the best. As usual the special events such as the visit to the cork farm, tour of the vineyard, and the Fado concerts were all outstanding. I agree with my wife's evaluation form, but have a few additional comments. I think your groups are a little large. I wish they were only 18-24. Twelve days is a long time for a group of 28 people to remain civil, positive and united toward a common goal. Through out the tour we managed to do this and much of the responsibility lay squarely on the shoulders of our guide, Javier Menor. This was my first RS tour, so I had few expectations and solely the hope for an awesome experience. My expectations were surpassed easily by the third day as the camaraderie built. The tour pacing, with two/four hours of free time each day was perfect.

The tour was everything we expected. The group dynamics were quite different. We have been on five RC Tours and our groups were truly family and we made friendships that lasted beyond the tour. This trip started out with NO last names divulged which was a bit odd. In the past, we always had companiions in our "free" time. This time, everyone just went off on their own. A wonderful introduction to Portugal. We saw main sights in major cities, key achievements in rural areas, walked small villages, famous religious sights, an ancient university, and were exposed to culturally relevant performances, food, and drink. "The map in the sidewalk in Lisboa that showed where the Portuguese had colonies and the dates of those colonial "conquests". It was torrential rain when Fátima gave that lecture. It was worth it in spite of the weather."

Wasn't quite sure what would be found in Portugal but must say it was overwhelming! What a country! Our guide Fatima was very knowledgeable and proud of her country which came through in her delivery and from all the daily guides we had the pleasure to spent time with. Well. Our guide made the whole trip exciting, informative and totally fun. She kept everyone engaged and on track with our schedule. Not easy! Fatima also made the 'bus time' enjoyable with lots of information about Portuguese culture, etc. Our fellow travelers were lots of fun. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the various hotels we stayed at! On your tours it is lovely to experience so many towns. A great way to get a taste of a country, and long for more!

This was my eighth RS tour. Portugal is a delightful destination and the people are warm, friendly and gracious. Maria is an excellent guide and Javier was an excellent assistant. The itinerary was a good one. In my opinion, the visit to Fatima is not worth the time. Delete! Please add at least half a day at the lovely Hotel Rural Casa dos Viscondes da Varzea. Our time there was much too short. Two nights would be wonderful. I do realize it was probably the most expensive hotel.

This was my first Rick Steves tour. I have travelled with other tour companies in the past and in comparison, this tour thoroughly impressed me, and I would not hesitate to sign up for another of his thoughtful, well-planned journeys. I very much appreciated the emphasis on local culture, food and activities and entertainment. There is so much to learn about other countries, their history and way of life and these tours make it all possible.

Portugal is beautiful & has a fascinating history. My husband & I spend a lot of time reminiscing about the delicious food - we got hooked on pastels de nata. There's nothing like them here and we miss them. At our first group dinner, we were overwhelmed with platters of perfectly-grilled meats (and bowls of warm potato chips). I discovered I really like bacalhau - and then, there was succulent suckling pig - and francesinha sandwiches, smothered in cheese. We need to go back & try the tripe!

It was a lovely respite between cities."

Great diversity of activities on this tour --fado performances, cork farm, tile painting, tasting tour of Porto along with the 'usual suspects' of visits to major sites. Mario truly superior guide, very knowledgeable with a calming influence but also fine sense of humor. Good fortune to have Javier on tour as major injury to client in Obidos allowed him to stay behind to help arrange her evacuation to US. Óbidos a theme park from the 50s not worthy of inclusion and slippery when wet

The trip would have been better without all the rain. That is not your fault. There were of course unexpected but enjoyable learning events. We had looked forward to Portugal, but now feel we waited too long. Lisbon, in particular was too crowded, overrun with tourists and pickpockets. Once we got out of the city it got better. We loved Coimbra and Porto and if returning to Portugal would skip Lisbon, fly into Porto and stay in the country and smaller cities. Overall there were too many churches. Fátima was a real bust. Portugal is a marvel, so much rich history and treasures in this tiny country. I am easily bored by churches/monuments, but I found all on this tour to be breathtaking, unique, and worth the time. The Portuguese people are, dare I say, friendlier than most others on the Continent. Of the 7 RS tours I have taken, the hotels on this tour were the best by far: we stayed at three 4-star hotels! This was our 4th Rick Steves tour, and for some reason, I think this trip was my favorite of all of them, even though our first trip to Paris was our dream/bucket list destination. Very surprising, but I would definitely recommend this trip to everyone. It may have had a lot to do with our very congenial tour members and our extremely knowledgeable guide, Robert, but something about Portugal just drew me in, and I loved it!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So very difficult to choose just one moment, with the Douro Valley vinyard, the surprisingly amazing cork farm tour, and the outstanding beauty of the expected "wow" sites in the cities, plus the quaint villages! But for us, thinking back on the entire trip throughout the country, I'd have to say it was the wonderful food - the perfectly prepared whole fish, the prawns, octopus, clams, mussels, etc., etc.! We love fish and seafood, and had some of the best ever here in Portugal."

Our guide Fatima was great. She poured her heart into showing us her beautiful country. Portugal Rocks!!! It is a beautiful land with great coasts and rivers. The cities are charming and the history is grand. Some of the best food on the planet is to be enjoyed in Portugal. Best of all, the people are extraordinarily nice.

Portugal was a great place to visit and we are happy to have traveled there before it is even more crowded. We visited a few too many monastaries and churches. Although they were interesting, some of the visits were too long. Otherwise, we thought all attractions scheduled were excellent.

Wonderful tour; fabulous and guide! Portugal was always a mystery to us which led us to sign up for this tour. We were not disappointed! I loved the group and how welcoming they were. Our tour guide Fatima went way beyond anything that was expected of here. She really tried hard to get to know each of us and worked especially well in educating us about the people of Portugal and the History of the country. It was soooo interesting! I think one of the most interesting parts of the trip was the Fanta singers and the first Cork Farm we visited. Fun tour learning about Portugal's history, its maritime history, and good food. Also, learned about the different Fado common to Lisbon versus that sung by male university students in Coimbra. This trip was not just another European tour experience. We were able to learn so much about the culture, food, and art of Portugal, not to mention the extremely informative trips to a cork farm and a small but renowned vineyard in the Douro Valley. Our tour guide, Maria, was not only knowledgeable about the history and geography of Portugal, she was an exceptional organizer and worked constantly to ensure correct hotel rooms, restaurant reservations, etc.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I suppose the biggest wow factor for me was the visit to the working cork farm, where we were given a personal tour of the cork oak forest, and the sustainable methods they are using, as well as a tutorial on pine nuts, olive trees, and even cattle. Lunch was wonderful-in the beautiful dining area where we were served delicious food, while dining with a member of the staff and meet other family members and owners of the estate. Not only informative, but enjoyable. Vineyard comes in 2nd!"

This tour was made special by several factors. First, our guide Maria was knowledgeable and entertaining, and she did all of the special things that you hope for in a guide. Second, the tour provided experiences that I will always remember, like grape stomping and Fada performances. Visiting the sites in Portugal was informative and entertaining, but what I cherish is the personal involvement in Portuguese culture. Lastly, the Portuguese people were wonderful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

The Portugal experience was very interesting and diverse. Between the big cities, Lisbon and Porto, medium cities, Coimbra, and the smaller towns. Also, the numerous cultural experiences including cork harvesting and port grape stomping really made the whole trip extremely memorable.

our guide Maria was excellent. the Portuguese people were very friendly and warm. The lands of Portugal are very pretty and its climate inviting. Our guide, Maria, was outstanding; truly outstanding. The tour itself was very good. I felt that we got to see and experience a nice sampling of Portugal. The trip was way less active than advertised. The first "strenuous" day (Lisbon) was simply just walking the city. It would have been much more accurate to characterize that day as mild-moderate. The last "strenuous" day in Porto was very mild in terms of activity. The materials very much overstated the activity level.

The tour was the right length, although Sintra should have been included. Sintra offers more than some cities in which we stopped. The cork farm and vineyard visits were clear highlights. Meeting with local families added immeasurably to the experience. The tour was billed as small group; however, at 26 people, it lacked the feel of a small group. The large group became strung out frequently and the whisper system didn't work around corners.

Rafael infused every experience with his passion for Portugal. He was informative, helpful and accessible. Rafeql went out of his way to provide interactive "extra" such as medieval dancing with the local dance troupe, a chat with a local baker and the opportunity to try her cod delicacy with cherry liqueur and a lesson in hand painting ceramic tile. This was our first Rick Steve's Trip. It won't be our last. We have had very good tours with others in the past, but none were conducted with the passionate education provided by Raphael. If other tours are guided with the same level of tour leadership you are a very lucky employer indeed. "The Douro Valley was absolutely amazing and beautiful. I was so impressed with what had been accomplished by the inhabitants of the area in establishing vineyards on the steep hillsides. This was my 4th RS tour and I really appreciated how unique Portugal is compared to Spain and the rest of Europe. I think there were more group activities on this tour than most but I really liked the cork farm, the vineyard and winery, both fado evenings and the ceramic factory tour. The tour was wonderful from start to finish. I really didn't know exactly what to expect from Portugal, but my experiences were all positive. First of all the Portuguese people are wonderful - friendly, genuinely hospitable, helpful and very skillful with the English language. Great overall tour! What drew me to the tour was that, with the exceptions of Sintra and the Algarve, the itinerary hits every major site described in Rick's Portugal guidebook. It would be very hard to put together an equally comprehensive 12-day overview of Portugal on your own. This is not a tour for you if you don't like hills, but in all other respects it's easy to see why this is one of Rick's best-selling tours.

The driver wound his way to the center of town while our guide described the locations of the nearest cafes and restrooms, plus a set of stairs to climb to get a scenic overview of the town. If you'd been sleeping in the back of the bus, you would never guess the stop had been improvised. Impressive recovery!"

The tour gave us a great overview of Portugal. There was a nice balance of organized and free time. The activities and excursions were all fun and interesting. Best of all, we had an exceptionally nice group of people. Everyone got along well, there were no "cliques" as everyone mingled at different points throughout.

"Stomping grapes[INVALID]something I never dreamed I'd get to do. It was surprisingly fun[INVALID]and felt great! It was very well-organized[INVALID]we were given appropriate clothes for stomping and afterwards could easily clean up for lunch. A close second was the cork forest, with the history and information about cork, as well as the companion crops of acorns, pine nuts, olives, and grapes. I was impressed not only with the care for the environment, but also having work available all year."

Generally, a very good tour experience. Our guide, Maria, was excellent--knowledgeable, kind, patient, and supportive. We went to Sintra on our own prior to start of the tour, and am glad we did as it was one of the best two days of the trip. It is a shame that the tour does not include a night in Sintra. We may have spent a bit too much time in churches, but that is a major element in Portugal.

This was our 4th Rick Steve's tour, and it was wonderful and unique. Maria was our first true native guide. Like all the other tour guides on past trips, she was exceptionally wonderful. Our 4th Rick Steves tour was another winner and good for a first time intro to Portugal. Making it 13 days with a full day trip to Sintra from Lisbon could be a plus. Our half day taste of the Atlantic beach was just right; Algarve would be too much. Our guide Maria is a true gem: knowledgeable, very well organized, kind, funny. It's no coincidence that by the end of the tour our 27 members felt like a family - probably the most completely congenial group we have been in on any RS tour.

"The idea of "Wow moments" seems a bit out of place in Portugal, which served up a steady stream of very interesting people, places, history, music, tiles, food and beverages. Porto was gorgeous and fascinating. Visits to the Alentejo cork forest and the Douro winery, and quality time with the families who run them, were also highlights. The Portuguese people we met, both in the group context as well as on our own, were very welcoming."

This tour was a great experience with a wonderful guide, group and itinerary. Our guide, Rafael, was so passionate about his country, history and people greatly enhanced the overall experience for me. He was also funny, helpful, caring and full of surprise treats. The group was great! They were fun, friendly and inclusive. The itinerary was a fun mix of large and smaller cities, with a great stay in the Douro Valley. Hotels were centrally located, which is especially great for navigating on.

Rafael is passionate about his country, and did a yeoman's job at helping us learn about Portugal. One thing I especially liked was the way he would encourage us to critically think about a belief or statement.

We look back and remember the perfect Photo Stops, treats of local delicacies, GREAT meals, and plenty of good wine. We won't forget Rafael's history lesson in Belem, his poems, and teaching moments. We tell our friends that Rick Steves tours are a good value - they give a great overview of the region being explored and visits to a carefully refined list of top attractions. Comfortable buses, enough seating. Hotels are all clean and safe plus they are close to the top attractions.

This active, busy, tour was just fantastic. The guide was such a history buff and his explanations were helpful and interesting. The Portugal tour is terrific and we are happy that it is a stand alone tour now. The tour was a success in my eyes because our guide, Christina, made the tour interesting and informative. She painted a picture of Portugal and the Portuguese people. The use of additional guides at several locations enhanced the experience. The visit to the cork farm and the vineyard were particular highlights for me. "Seeing Fatima was incredibly spiritual and heartfelt. My grandparents were born in Portugal so this has been my lifelong dream to come see the place where my grandmother was born. She was my most Godly influence. My cousin Lynne and niece Sarah (also on the tour) and I knelt on the pathway to the shrine and held my Grandmother's rosary and said a prayer together. I really enjoyed our fellow tour members.

This was our first Rick Steeve's tour, and it did not disappoint. "It is hard to isolate a WOW moment as there were many. First of all was the ride from the airport in Lisbon to our hotel. Taking in the architecture of the city with it's brightly colored tiles was impressive. This continued throughout the trip. Just great! Loved the fact that we went to see Portugal and really felt we had seen a large part of it. But we did not have to do all the organizing ourselves. Since this was my first tour (Rick Steve's or otherwise) I have no comparison. I enjoyed every minute for many reasons. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your customer account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Lisbon and out of Porto ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Portugal.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Portugal guidebook.
