Parking Holland — Travel tips/Open Air Museums or other Must See sites
Does anyone have experience driving in HOlland, more specifically finding a place to park in Holland? Is it really as bad as the tour books say it is? While I realize Amsterdam might be very difficult (we drive a suburban), I am thinking the smaller cities we visit (Delft, Leiden, Haarlem, etc...) might not present such a problem. I realize the trains/trams are very efficient but with our size family they will also be expensive going to and from our base on the beach. We live in Germany and so will drive to Holland and be there the first two weeks of May. Also, any advice on "must see" sites, especially whether or not you think the Alkmaar cheese market it too "cheesy" and which open air museum or windmill(s) are the best in your opinion.
Thanks,
Susan

Transport in London
Jerry — the tube does run to Heathrow, but the trip into the city can be lengthy. My sister often travels between Heathrow and Paddington Station on the tube and says it takes about 45 minutes. She takes the Heathrow Express if she's in a hurry, but it's a lot more expensive(12 pounds). I used the journey planner on the Transport for London website (www.tfl.gov.uk) to check times from Waterloo to Heathrow for part of our trip and it's about 50 minutes just from Picadilly Circus to Heathrow (not counting the 10 minute walk to the terminal). Be aware that the transportation card with the London Pass can't be used before 9:30 a.m. since it's an off-peak pass and it offers no discount from what it would cost to buy one without the London Pass — just more convenience in getting them together. Also, if you're there over the weekend, a weekend travelcard is only around 8 pounds — a bit cheaper than the 11 pounds charged to purchase transportation with the London Pass. The tfl website has a fares booklet you can look at online to figure out whether a single ticket for before 9:30 combined with an off-peak card would be the cheapest option. They're also good about answering questions by e-mail.

Converting Money
Beth.... Do not use your credit card to withdraw money in Europe. .... That’s the most expensive way to convert currency......Go to your bank and get an ATM card.....ask what the fee will be to withdraw money in Europe...Call your credit card company and ask what the interest rate will be if you use your credit card to convert currency. .....that way you will be aware of the cost of your various methods of conversion.....don’t accept the advice of other travelers because their conditions may be different than yours....you can read the experience of many travelers on the Graffiti Wall in using ATM machines....I have used mine in every European country without problem and at the best exchange rate....my bank charges only 1% on each withdrawal.

France to Italy
FRANCE TO ITALY
Monica....travel from France to Italy can vary from air to train. Depends on what you like....the quickest way is by air...but it is usually more costly.....you might vary it by flying part way and going by rail or auto the rest of the way.....going through the alps is more enjoyable by train because you can see the sights better.

CAMPERVAN TOURING
Dennis....when I have rented cars in Europe, I always check the web page for the major agencies to see which one offers a car at the lowest fee..... Here is my list of agencies I contact ..... www.easycar.com, kemwel, com, autoeurope.com, e-sixt.com, diks.net, orbitz.com, travelnow.com, europebycar.com, europecar.com...
Always check the tax added to be sure you get the lowest rate ....After you determine the agency you want to deal with, call the toll free number and talk to an agent..make a list of questions..ask about the insurance charges and any drop charges if you leave the van in another location ..ask all the questions before you make your decision....My experience has been that Germany is the best country to rent in...because the tax has always been lower...so I fly into Frankfurt...I have always found diesels provide more miles to the gallon and diesel costs less than gasoline...Be aware that camper vans cost more to rent and they use more fuel...at $4 a gallon.

Getting around London
I will be in London for 2 days and am wondering what the best way is to get around without hassle. I have looked at the London Pass as well as a daily tube/bus pass. I want something with unlimited usage so that I can get from A to B, hop on...hop off...hop on... I also need something I can use to Heathrow. To my knowledge the tube goes there, correct?

Does anyone have a good road map of Rome? I want to know where Piazza della Scala is (because I'd like to go to the church of Santa Maria della Scala), but none of my tourist maps show it. Converting Money....
I checked the exchange rate from Travelex.com It is 6% different from the rate listed on xe.net/ucc — the universal conversion website. If you order a certain amount from Travelex, there is no delivery charge. Apparently, AAA offices offer smaller amounts of foreign cash to use for tip money. AAA advises you to check and make sure your credit card doesn't consider the foreign money as a cash advance — with interest tacked on as soon as it is ordered.

Gardens in England
Mojdeh — There are so many beautiful gardens throughout England that you will probably have to concentrate on a specific area. Driving can be very slow on the back roads. Kent is well known for its gardens and there are many in the Cotswolds. I have abrochure I got from the Tourist Center in London — Britain's Gardens. Here is a website: www.visitbritain.com/gardens. CONVERTING MONEY
Jerry........Why pay an extra fee for delivery of foreign money when the exchange rate you will get at AAA is not as good as using your ATM in Europe. You get the International Bank rate with your ATM card....AAA gets a very poor exchange rate and you pay an extra fee also.

barcelona place to stay
If you go to the Barcelon Tourism sight they will send you a list of hotels that lists tthem all even the one star. Most room finding sights on the internet don't even list two star let alone one star. this sight also proves free maps and other information
We were in Barcelona this past Dec. 30, 31 and Jan1. We stayed at the Hostel Levante and Baxtille San Gabriel Near Place de Paul I think. any way it was in the old town a short walk from Las Ramblas. it is on the 2nd and 3rd floors of an old building but has 24 hour attendands and you must push a doorbell to enter. It is a very good location, within walking distance of Las ramblas the huge wonderful market Barquita (spelling wrong) and Claca Catalunya and even barcelonetta , and the aquarium and maritime museum. It is actually only about 3 blocks from las ramblas and you come out about halfway between placa Catalunya and Christopho columbo column. We took it becasue we had been trying to get into another hotel right on las ramlas but they kept telling me it was too soon to make a reservation until the last time when they said they were full sot hostel levante was the cheapest we could find at that time of year at 55 euros for two people

Train Schedules
Train schedules I usually only use the train schedules on the internet and in the Eurail guide as guides times change and it often depends on time of year and times of day and days of the week
For making reservations if needed over the phone ( I have a number for france listed on another graffiti letter) then I just tell them the day and time i want and they will tell me what is available,
Other wise unless you are keeeping to a tight schedule I just go to the station and take the next train. If you like more planning than that each station has racks of little schedules for each route for example paris to nice with the week day schedule on one part and the holiday and sunday schedual in another part on the back is the reverse route Telling all the stops each train makes and times for arrivals and departures. Be sure to check in the station at the big board for times you need to know the destination station and at the large paper signs posted signs which list all the stops. Just make sure you are looking at the departure not the arrivals board since you have already arrived. also when you arrive someplace for a day trip make sure you check the last departure time so you know how late you can stay. You must be careful though if trying to go too far on a day trip. You might find yourself arriving after the last train back leaves. Relax its simpler than it looks and its loads more fun than driving you can get up and walk around or just sit back and relax at 185 MPH on the TGVs and you can enjoy the mountains without worrying about curvy narrow roads

Converting money
Jerry ~ if you want to get currency for the country you are traveling to, when go call your AAA office as I mentioned before. The only "extra" charge is for the delivery. They do not keep it in their offices, they order it. So you would only pay what it is with the exchange rate and a delivery charge. Carlo told you there were high charges but there isn't.

cheapest way from airport to Varenne metro stop paris
The cheapest and fastest way to get from CDG roissey airport is to take the Free shuttle bus from Terminal one to the train station.
Here you can buy a one time ticket or rail passes like the Paris Visite. Take the RER (Air Aye Air) B to Notre Dame/St. Michelle (pronounced San Michelle) Then follow the signs to RER C ( do not Sortie though the gates or you will have to buy another ticket if you don't have a pass) Take the RER c direction Versaille to the Invalides stop (2nd stop) from there take the M13 direction Chatillion one stop to the Varenne and walk from there. It helps if you have a back pack or you bag is on wheels. If you are going to be in paris some sort of metro pass is available. the Paris Visite is expensivce but covers buses metro and RER . You could buy one ticket to get to your hotel and because you need a zone 5 to get from the airport to the center city and then a zone 3 for the rest of your trip which covers most of the tourist area of Paris. If you are taking this backwards to the airport from the hotel allow plenty of time It akes about an hour if you catch your trains right. son't worry though, except before 6:30 the trains run so frequently that connections are alwys just minutes apart. also now days they want you at the airport 2 hours ahead of time in Europe also and they may not allow you to board if you check in less than a hour ahead of time. This only applies if you are going directly to the US for connecting flights within Europe tthey are more lenient. In fact when transfering from a light from Nice to amsterdam and then on to Detroit all you had to do was go to your gate passport control was a simple look at your passport. At Schiphol though to buy anything at the shops you must present your boarding pass. They are updating the terminal at CDG so i don't know what it will be like but be aware if you planned to eat there before boarding your flight you must do it first before checking in because one you check in you are directed up the escalator to the boarding area and not allowed to go anywhere else and there are no longer any food vendors up there. but this may change. We bought sandwiches in Paris and took them with us . they start boarding a hour ahead of time.

daypack for 7 1 year old
I always use a fanny pack for my day bag but i wear it in front. I have one that has lots of pockets and a large central compartment. They are hard to find I got mine at Dollywood in Tennessee. There is a small zippered compartment on the backside. I don't kike wearing money belts so that is where I keep my passport and extra money. I wear the bag so tight that it would be impossipble for anyone to reah in awithout me noticing. Infact it is so tight that one day I used my credit card and thought i put it back in the pocket. i woalked around Paris for several hours and when I got back to the hotel room the card dropped onthe bed. It had been caught between me and the fanny pack and never fell out.
I use the outer most pocket for my metro pass and museum pass change purse and never more than 50 euros.
The big pocket i use for my film for the day (I take lots of pictures) I always think a thief would get a big surprise if he slit the bottom of my bag all he would be was a bunvch of film mrolling all over. They do sell bags with wire through the strap to prevent cutting through.
I also carry a canvas shopping bag about the size of a large notebook for shopping it takes almost zero space in packing and works very well for shopping the many markets in Europe although many give you plastic bags it is easier to put them all in a shopping back. A string bag would work for this as well
Because i take lots of pictures I have started using this bag for my cameras. It does look a bit conspicuous wearing a 35 mm camera a digital camera and a movie camera all at once. so I just take out the one I need I can have the handle over my arm and squeez the top together and hold it tightly with my hand when walking.
I think that most of the time you are not close enough to anyone for them to pick you pocket. And if you never let go of you bags or keep them between your feet when sitting it is harder to grap and never, never leave them unattended
The only places I have ever been sqeezed in tightly with people are the eiffel tower elevator some metro trains and inside the palace at Versailles. the Palace and the tower you can blame on Tour groups for the crowding. Once on the metro in Paris a Well dressed lady with a raincoat over her arm (suspicious in itself) freached toward my fanny pack but I just reached out and put my hand over the top and nothing happened. Most of the time on the metro unless you are standing up people keep thier distance

how to reserve train tickets and seats in the us without a service charge
I didn't know where else on the site to put this
Maybe
rick has already put this in his rail guide, but there is a phone number in France thast you can call for rail information and if you use a credit card you can make reservations at the in country price with no service charge and pick up the tickets at the train station when you get there. I use this also for sleeper reservations and it worked fine.
It is listed on the France Railpass Guide as "To obtain general information on reservations, time-tables and conditions of use of your pass" but you can also make your reservations there the In English number is (from the US 011-33-8-92-35-35-39. It is also available in French German, italiain and spanish
Couchette First Class (four comfortable beds) was $15 euros from Cerbere France on the spanish Border to NIce, France
Next time I go to Europe I will use it for all my TGV reservations ( I don't make reservations on other trains) They are usually about 3 euros max We always go over Easter break because i work in a school and we don't want to go in the summer and I get that week off. Sometimes I take an extra week anyway. when ww make reservations when we get there often our preferred times are already gone so this phone number will be a Godsend

Teen dress code in churches
Just another note for teens travelling in Europe. Jeans and t-shirts are the norm. They will be dressed fine for admittance to any church or museum as long as shoulders are covered. Many churches in Italy will not allow you in wearing shorts or tank tops, but a skirt whch hits the knee cap is fine. Most of the teens do not wear white socks or white sneakers, that;s a sure tip you're American. We live in Germany and travel all over with our 2 teens, and they are fine in jeans or chinos.

Paris Museum Pass
Definitely get the museum pass! Worth it for skipping the line at the Louvre alone, but it pays for itself in a couple of visits. You can get the Carte Musee in 1, 3, or 5-day versions at any Metro office. Three or 5-day would be my choice — your brain would explode if you tried to see everything in one day. And don't forget a copy of MONA WINKS — we ripped out the Paris section and taped it into a cut-down folder cover and never bothered with the museum maps and brochures.

ITALIAN RIVERIEREA CARS AND TRAINS
Mike.....You will find the best views on the train and you will be able to see them better too..... I always have difficulty seeing the scenery when I drive..... However, if there are more than two of you, the cost increases by rail over auto travel. .......
You will also find the train more convenient in Cinque Terre country........ The roads don’t go to all the villages, but the trains do...... It is more difficult taking photos on the train; at least you can stop the car for special sights.

To should have gone to spain. We have not gone to spain since the attacks but we were there on New Years vev in Barcelona. We would also not have cancelled our trip if it was on for now. I feel much safer in Europe than i do in the US and when there we use only the thrain and metro fro transportation (plus an occassionaly taxi). The attack was a little surprise because even if the security isn't as obvious as it is at airports it is everpresent. and in a station if you leave a bag un attended it will be destroyed no questions

day in Paris
I would defintely say it would be worth it to take they Eurostar to Paris for the day . It's sort of on your way to Italy anyway. For only a day though I think your time would be best spent just stolling around paris Take the RER from Gare Du Nord (I think the Eurostar goes for there) take RER B to Notre Dame Ste. Michael (pronounced San Michelle) to RER C Take RER C direction Versaille (Vick is one of the trains) to the Eiffel tower. After seeing the Eiffel Tower Get back on the RER C dirction Massey (the other side from where you got off) this time get off at Notre Dame St. Michelle cross over to Notre Dame and then mosey along the Ile'le City past the police station . Check out the lion head door handles If you have time go to Ste. Shappelle It is better than Notre Dame
Countine back inthe direction of the Eiffel towerAt the end of the Island are the boat rides If you want to try or you can just cross over to the left back and check out the book stalls on the Quays until you come to pot du carosel Corss over to the louvre. Look at the galss pyramid and the turn left through the arch du Carosel and into the Tuleries Gardens Tke a little rest sitting on one of the benches or stop by the Musee D'orsay RER stop ( efell tower end of the musee) and try one of the paninis at the snak bar there and sit in the gardens or along the river and have a Peacefull lunch
Stroll through them until you come to the place de la concorde. If you are still ambitious you might want to find a metro stop and go to the Arch de Triumph for a long climb to the top,
For dinner we like the restaruant on the left bank side on the corner of Rue d; Bac and the Quai Voltaire, close to the Pont royale
If you are going to Italy by train I would suggest taking the TGV to Geneva and then Around lac Leman To Milano. You can go any where in Italy from Milano

TIME FROM GATWICK TO STANSTEAD IN LONDON
Sandra: I copied this web page: ww.ebury-house-hotel.com/optimised/3_5,1.htm. Apparently the trains to and from the airports connect through Victoria station.
“Gatwick Airport.....By rail....
Connex South Central and Gatwick Express rail services run direct to Victoria. Journey time is around 30-45 minutes. Trains run every 20 minutes. On exiting Victoria train station follow the walking directions below. Cost will be roughly £8.20 standard single.....
Taxi.....
We do not recommend you take a taxi from Gatwick as it is very expensive and takes a long time.......
Stanstead Airport......By rail ....
Stansted Skytrain services run every 15 minutes (30 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays) to Liverpool Street Station. Change to the Underground and take the Circle Line to Victoria Station. Follow the walking directions listed below. ....
Walking directions from Victoria Underground and Victoria Train Station.....
When exiting the Underground station look for signs Buckingham Palace Road (Coach Station). After you have exited the Underground you will be at the front of the Train Station. Walk up Buckingham Palace Road, towards the Coach Station and turn right onto Eccleston Street. Walk up to first set of traffic lights and turn left onto Ebury Street and walk until you reach the Hotel (number 102) this should take 5-10 minutes.......
If you have a lot of luggage and would prefer to take a taxi the cost will be £5-£8 depending on number of passengers and amount of luggage.....HOPE this will help you.

Should Have Gone To Spain!
I am curious how people's trips to Spain went if you travelled shortly after the horrible terrorist attack on the comuter trains in Madrid? I ask because I caved in to my elderly mother's and wife's wishes and cancelled our spring break trip to Spain based on what happened. Luckily we had taken out travel insurance and that worked great! Instead, we went to Santa Fe, New Mexico. For some background, we live in the Capitol Hill area of Denver, i.e. urban. The night before we were going to take off to Santa Fe, our car was broken into, sitting in our garage behind our house, and our CD player, my golf clubs, and some cloths were stolen. Spent time and money at Car Toys the next morning getting the CD player replaced because we can't drive down there without listening to a book on tape for some the the six hour drive. Then when we got to Santa Fe, we were side-swiped by a car that just took off. Spent time filling out a police report for about 2 hours. Now we have a rental car while the car gets fixed plus having to pay our $500.00 deductible. On our second, while walking around the Plaza, got my wallet stolen. Hey, I didn't need a money belt, we were in the USA. Just to truly torture myself, I checked on our former flights going to Spain and from Spain and nothing happened. Nor did any further attacks happen. But in the course of a couple days in our own country, we had a bunch of junk happen that was irritating and costly. I said at one point to my mother, we would have been better off in Spain, but she claimed she would have died from worry and my wife still contends that she would have been nervous the entire time we would have been in Spain. She seemed unmoved by my wallet being stolen, the car being broken in to or the car side swiping us. Live and learn! Statistics will out.

FLYING TO LONDON
Julie.......It’s a gamble as to when to buy your air fare.....FARES change hourly, depending on the number of seats empty on any given flight. Most advice on this page is to buy when you have checked fares for a few weeks and learn what is a low fare. You can wait for a better fare, but you risk the fares going up. No one knows when to buy. I would check hotwire.com, bestfares.com , and expedia.com.

Hello; I recommend either the Fuerstenhof in Vienna:http://www.hotel-fuerstenhof.com/
or the Zur Agnes:http://members.nudsl.at/agnes/
Both are great non-touristy places where you will get a great experience. Nicola at the Fuerstenhof will give you a 10% discount for booking over the internet. The Zur Agnes is in Sievering, which is about 15 min from city center by tram and bus...if you want a very unique and treasured memory of a place stay at the Agnes! Short skirts in Rome
Teresa-my teen daughter & I were fine in Rome (and other parts of Italy) with knee length skirts. Be sure, however, that your shoulders are covered. I bought a long, lightweight scarf that I could put around my tank top to cover my shoulders and my daughter used a light sweater. Also, neither men nor women can wear shorts at some churches.

Clothing for Teens
Leslie-My teens kids usually brin only 1 pair or jeans. They are very heavy and don't wash & dry quickly. They wear them mostly when we are out in the countryside -climbing castle ruins, etc. My kids also bring nicer clothes to wear in the cities so that we can go straight from sightseeing to a decent restaurant. I like the flexibility that wearing slightly nicer clothes gives us, plus they are more lightweight.

Clothing for Teens in Europe
I've seen plenty of advice on what adults should wear to Europe, but what about teens? My British friend's teenagers seem to dress pretty much like my kids, but what about Paris? Are jeans and t-shirts the international teenage dress code or do Parisian teens tend to dress-up also? We're trying to pack light, so I don't want to bring clothes that will just sit in the suitcase.

Day Bags & Short Skirts
I've traveled with a tote bag and also with a Healthy Back Bag ("HBB") for use as a day bag. (I also carry a small purse.) Between the tote and the HBB, I prefer the HBB. However, for Rick's weeklong tour of Rome, I was thinking of using my Eagle Creek backpack instead of the HBB, as I think it would be more comfortable (and easier to secure the zipper). Has anyone had any problem with being allowed entry to an attraction, church or shop while carrying a backpack? Mine is a very small backpack, but there's really no disguising the fact that it IS a backpack.
Also, I understand that I might be denied entrance to certain churches if I'm wearing a short skirt. But how short is short? I've got a dress I'd like to bring along, the hem of which stops smack-dab at the top of my kneecap. Is that too short?

Reply: Traveling with Children
I'm sure the regulations are different from country to country, but in Canada, if you are traveling with your child(ren) and not your spouse, it doesn't matter if you're divorced, separated, or still blissfully married, your airline can and might ask for a note of acknowledgement from your spouse. It certainly couldn't hurt to carry one, just in case. I've been advised that older children (such as mine, who are 11 and 14) can verbally indicate that dad knows they're traveling with mom, but to be honest, I wouldn't take the risk of being denied access to my flight.

In June '01, we stayed at the Hotel Elite, av.Sainte-Luce, which was clean, comfortable and friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed a restaurant on av.courant l'Eveche which is just east of place St.Francois. Delicious 15 franc menu.Wish I had kept the actual name of the restaurant. We were heading up to the musee at place de la Palud and the Cathedrale. These are two fasscinating sites. Also the Olympic museum was interesting. Also visited my old boarding school — Ecole Mont Olivet but I wouldn't consider that a usual tourist attraction! A boat ride is also fun as well as the paddle boats!

Reply — traveling with children
Ann, the only time you need special papers to take your kids out of the country is if you are divorced and either noncustodial or sharing custody, from what I understand. It's a safety measure to prevent parental kidnaping. Papers are also necessary for anyone taking someone else's child abroad — for instance, a trip with Grandma or a favorite aunt. Not only do you want to be able to prove you have the parents' permission to be taking their darling to England, you also want to be able to have that arm set if Darling falls off the pirate ship in the Princess Diana Garden!

By bus from Dingle to: Galway (4/day, 6.5 hrs), Dublin (3/day, 8 hrs), Rosslare (2/day, 9 hrs), Tralee (4/day, 75 min, €8); fewer departures on Sundays. Most bus trips out of Dingle require at least one or two (easy) transfers. Dingle has no bus station and only one bus stop, on the waterfront behind Super Valu supermarket (bus info tel. 01/830-2222 or Tralee station at 066/712-3566). CONVERTING CASH MONIES
Jerry:
You will find a number of advices on this page. Most will give you their experience, which may not be what you will experience. I have been traveling for over 20 years. I started buying currency at my bank in Dallas for the first week of my trip to Europe. And I would buy travelers checks for the balance of my needs.
That is the MOST expensive way to do it. Robin is right. You must consider two things: the poor exchange rate you receive in Europe and the added fee which can often be near 10% in some exchange booths. Don’t do it in Europe.
On my most recent trip I flew into Frankfurt. I checked the airport map on the web before I left to see where the ATM machines are located. I found 4 on the arrival level. Upon landing I went to the machine labeled “Pulse” and withdrew enough euros to buy my rail ticket at the station in the basement of the terminal plus additional expenses for two days.
Read the Graffiti column called Whats Hot: ATMs. Your will find many comments on using ATM cards in Europe.
Avoid the AAA office or your local bank. Their fee is much too high. You are paying them to do something you can do free in Europe. And often it is inconvenient to do it here; some banks require you to come to their office to guarantee the purchase before they provide the money.
Now I call my bank before I leave and ask what the fee will be to use my ATM card in whatever countries I will visit. It is always $1 per transaction...no additional charges. However in Moscow I withdrew rubles for the $1 fee and withdrew US dollars for a $1.25 fee. . I NEVER use a credit card for withdrawals...only for limited purchases. I have used ATM machines in over 30 countries without any problem. I have always been able to use my ATM card which takes Cirrus or Pulse machines.
You will see the names on the back of your card. I have found machines in railroad stations, airports where I land, post offices, dept stores, service stations and outside banks. Never have to look more than a few minutes for one. When I don’t find one, I ask the nearest intelligent-looking local where I can find one.
Those people are happy to tell me where to look. I have had them say, “follow me and I will show you.” Be sure you have a 4-digit pin number. If it is in letters go to an ATM machine and use the pad to convert your letters to numbers because all European machines require 4 digits.

From Galway to Dingle
Janine in San Diego-The Cliffs of Moher are not that far from Galway. You mentioned driving a car is not an option. This will make it tough. Trains do not go to Dingle I don't think — I guess a bus will take you there. We have driven around Ireland and it is easy but SLOW. To get to Dingle from the Cliffs as quickly as possible you have to take the ferry at Kilimer — you cross the River Shannon there. I do not recall seeing any buses on it so they must take a longer alternate route. Have you considered hiring a driver? I have heard it is not that costly. It would be a shame to miss seeing the Cliffs and Dingle is a wonderful place. Good Luck and have a fun trip!

Charles M. Luther
Jerry,
The earlier poster is simply wrong about where to get your Euro. Use a debit or check or bank card, NOT a credit card. It should have a 5 digit pin, NOT letters. MBNA seems to have the cheapest but wherever you banking account is located. Do NOT get your Euro here. You will pay a very high fee for that mistake. Read further down for better advice than that last poster.

Pompeii
Margaret, The other poster is correct that it is "dirt simple" to get to Pompeii from Naples. The train station to Pompeii is downstairs from the main station. Ask. But there was one error. There are two Pompeii stops. One is the "new" town of Pompeii and one is Pompeii Scavi. You want the Scavi. Ask anyone on the platform and again on the train. Some trains stop at both, some at one or the other. If you stop at the Scavi, the entrance is directly across from the train station and you cannot miss it. If you get off at the wrong one, it is a taxi ride away.

re: Pompeii
Margaret, It is a no brainer to do Pompeii by yourself. It is a dirt simple train ride from Naples' main station and take a cab to the entrance. Two things you must consume on your trip: Orange juice from the stand outside the entrance to the ruins, and gelato at the station while waiting for the return train.

Car rental from France to Italy — high drop-off fees
We're planning to travel with a rental car from Nice, France, to Rome — but the car rental drop-off fees from a couple of well-known car rental companies are VERY high. Carry cash to Europe
Jerry ~ if you wait to convert your money when you reach the country you are visiting you will not get a good exchange rate plus you will pay a high service charge. I would recommend you getting in touch with your local AAA office, they can get you foreign currency it takes 48 hours for them to get it. Or you could open a checking account and deposit your cash and use the ATM's. To use an ATM card in Europe it has to be connected to a checking account, it will not work if it is connect to a savings or if connected to a savings and checking. It has to be a checking account only.

Teresa: Driving in Italian Country Side from Rome
Teresa,
Great plan to see Italy by car.
In addition to Rick's Italy 2004 take along, at a minimum, the Michelin Atlas (the country map), and the Michelin Green guide (sites and attractions). You will be able to get to places most travelers would find difficult or impossible to reach. For example, outside of Rome. hidden in the "dusty" suburbs is Hadrian's Villa. While not a **** site, it was a highlight of one of our countryside drives (the summer before we walked alongside of Hadrian's Wall in Scotland). NO crowds, a BIG "park-like" setting (90+ mintues of walking about), ruins of a once spectacular Villa, and the thrill of finding an obscure "attraction" — imagine asking for directions via pantomine & pointing to the map.
Any room for an extra passenger .

Paris to Ramstein. Tony, we travel this way quite a bit, as we are stationed here at Ramstein. To drive is only 5-6 hrs and usually very little traffic. The train round trip is usually around 50 euros with same day purchase, cheaper for students The farther out you book, the cheaper. You can purchase tickets in the main train station. Make sure you are booking train reservations for Kaiserslautern. We stayed in Amboise at the Hotel Belle Vue. Our room was on the front with a shared balcony overlooking the river. During the day it was a bit noisy but we were not there much. During the evening,it was perfect. The rooms were clean and we could easily walk to the Chateau and Le Clos Luce. There was ample parking and driving to Chenonceau and Chambord was simple. During the day, Amboise can be a little touristy, during the evening the town is marvelous! We arrived at CDG, took the train to Tours where we picked up our car for the 20 minute drive to Amboise.

EGYPT
I am interested in hearing from travellers that have ventured outside of the main areas of Europe, particularly Egypt. My main Egypt questions: 1. Two young, travel-savvy women on a budget — independent travel or tour group? 2. Must-see's and must-not-see's(particular interest in off-the-beaten track places for history, culture, and natural beauty) 3. How accessible, safe, user-friendly is it in general and particularly to get around? Flights or buses? Still in the VERY early planning stages so ANY and ALL comments are welcome!!!

Best way to store luggage at hostels?
Though I was never at French hostels; I stayed at hostels in just about every other European country. Of course i heard horror stories, about travellers stealing from other travellers even, but i never had any problems in 6 months of hostelling. Always left my big pack in the room with nothing in it that would be worth stealing. i.e. my money/passport/camera etc. all in my money belt or day bag. I can't really remember having to pay extra for locked storage places; but many hostels do offer them (or require them) and of course; that is the best option. I never had my own lock; they must have provided them! Overall, i just had to use my judgment and never left anything behind that would be difficult to replace!

I think your schedule is a little aggressive; but there were also times, towards the end of my trip; when two days WAS really plenty in Florence (when i had scheduled three). I think overall yours sounds fine. Actually if anything I might would cut out Greece all together and find time to see some of the smaller towns in Tuscany and generally relax your schedule. I never took a night train because all of those train trips are under about 3 hours, except for Cinque Terre, which is a little more difficult to get to (a stopover in Genoa i believe) but obviously worth it! just beautiful! If for some reason you do end up taking a night train, i wouldn't worry about missing too much — i also thought i would want to appreciate the train scenery and instead ended up napping; catching up on my journal or postcards, and planning what to do in the next city. Once you get to your arrival city's train station, check the schedule for depatures so you can pinpoint the exact time you need to be back to the station and can enjoy the few days you have in the city without having to return to the station. The schedules tell you how long the trip is. I can also not comment as much in terms of booking lodging, as I stayed mostly in hostels AND was there during the off-season (rarely a reservation needed). Good Luck!

Quickest way from Galway to Dingle in Ireland
My friend and I will be traveling by train and bus (car is not an option unfortunately) from Cliffs of Mohr( just south of Galway) to Dingle to Kilkenny? I'm not sure the quickest way to get from Cliffs of Mohr to Dingle? Our time is tight and we want to fit in Dingle. Our plan was leave Galway visit Cliffs of Mohrs and make Dingle by middle of the evening. Is this possible to make it from Cliffs of Mohr to Dingle in one day and if so how is the fastest way? Thanks so much — Janine

To Soulseven: Italy/Greece
For train info, you can get a sampling of trip times at www.trenitalia.com, or the German site Rick has linked from this page. I don't think anything you mention in your itinerary would involve a logical overnight train. My only concern is your 2-day hop from Venice to Cinque Terre and down to Florence. That might be totally consumed in travel, as Cinque Terre is off the main train lines, and isn't all that close to Venice. For Greece, there's a great website: www.greecetravel.com. Perhaps your biggest challenge will be getting to Athens from Italy, as it's a really long ferry ride. If you want to skip the boat, I know that Volare flies from Venice to Athens, very cheaply (www.volareweb.com).

Help: 2 week Italian itinerary
First time to Europe. We have almost 3 weeks to spend travelling through Italy and Greece. (April 29- May 20) I have an idea of the route I want to take through Italy but was wondering if I could get an honest critique and helpful advice. This is what I have so far.
4.30 — Arrive in Venice at 10 am (2 days)
5.2 — Cinque Terre (2 days)
5.4 — Florence (3 days)
5.7 — Rome (3 days)
5.11 — Sorrento/Amalfi Coast (3 days)
5.14- 5.20 — Greece
5.20 — Leave from Athens at 2 pm
Questions:
1. We will be taking trains through Italy. I'm not sure how long these journeys take. How do you plan travel time into your itinerary? When is it a good time to take a Night train? I imagine some of the train rides would be beautiful and not to be missed during daylight.
2. Does the proposed itinerary need editing? Is it too ambitious? I'm willing to make changes even if it means eliminating one of our Italian stops or shaving off a day or two from Greece.
3.How far ahead should lodging be reserved?
4.Any advice on a one week Island hopping route through Greece ending up in Athens?
Sorry this is so long but I need help on this so I can set up our lodging for the trip. I can't figure that out until I know where we will be each day. Thank you so much:)

Driving in Rome/Italy
Though I am not sure where you would be picking up your car, I can tell you that we drove our car into Rome for our last night before departing the next morning for the airport. The driving was not all that bad, just the parking. I think you'd be fine to drive just a bit in Rome, though it is always a little confusing getting out of cities-be sure you have a good map. We used a car to drive around Tuscany and Chianti. We liked the freedom it gave us to stop at small towns and out of the way places. Once we stopped just to enjoy the view and ended up talking to the couple who lived nearby. With our broken Italian & English mix they were able to show us around their farm and were so glad to meet and talk with Americans. Having a car takes you even more off the beaten path and, especially in the Italian countryside, makes for marvelous discoveries.

One of the best places we stayed at in France was La Roseraie in Chenonceaux. Sophie & Laurent were the best and after eating dinner there the first night we immediately booked for the 2nd night. We loved the chateau at Chenonceaus (walking distance) and used our car to visit Amboise and other Loire Valley Chateaus.

Best way to store luggage at hostels?
Soon to be traveling through France by train, mostly staying at hostels. I've never stayed in hostels and want to be sure my belongings are safe. I don't want to have to take everything with me wherever I go (especially on day trips) if I don't need to. Do you typically have to pay extra for storage at hostels? Are there lockers for which I'll simply need to bring my own lock? Any advice on this front would be much appreciated!

Blow Dryer Question
Dual Voltage Dryers work fine. In fact because of Europe being 220 volts, it will probably heat up faster. Our 220 volt iron here heats up much faster than any of our 110 volt irons did back in the states. Be aware that there several different types of plugs throughout Europe. There are 3 different types just in Italy. If the place you are staying doesn't have an outlet that accomodates each of the different plugs, you will probably have to purchase an adaptor locally.

Blow Dryer
Ariana, I have a small travel dryer by Travel Smart (Franzus) and yes, it heats surprisingly well. I haven't had any problems overseas (make sure you switch it to European voltage before you plug it in). But honestly, from big city hotels to small B&B's, you'll likely find a hair dryer in your room. The Travel Smart is so light and small that it's worth packing anyway.

Blow Dryer Question
I need to bring a blow dryer for my takes-forever-to-dry hair. Just wondering if anyone has used one of those folding travel blow dryers (about 800-1100 watts), with dual voltage. Was the blow dryer powerful enough and could you actually use it in Europe (with an adaptor plug, of course)? Was it worth bringing a blow dryer?

We have never been to Italy. After seeing Rome our agent has us picking the rental car at the upper part of Rome (Villa Vorghese) then we drive to Assisi, to Castilini in Chianti then drop off car at Pisa Airport and this point continue by train. Is driving off from this part of Rome within our capabilities or is this still smack in the middle of a very busy city and be very stressfull and also, how about the rest of our route. We would like to exprience Italian Country side and we though driving is the best way. Our trip is in May of 2004

planes, trains and autos — HELP!
I have a big decision to make for 10 days of travel in early July. My 2 kids, husband and I will finish a Greece sailing trip, and have about 10 days to travel in Paris and Southern France, before flying to Stockholm to see relatives. We'll likely take a ferry from Greece to Italy, then need to decide how to get around from there. The budget airlines are incredibly cheap for these long distances (e.g getting from Italy to Paris, or Southern France to Frankfurt), but I've read of all the hassles and far off airports. I know train travel will be easier, but take longer, and is fairly expensive. My favorite option is to rent a VW campervan in Germany, but it's a bit impractical because camping in Paris doesn't make much sense, and my kids really want to see Paris. I'd love to hear from people who have insights or experience on any of the above options, or who can describe how difficult it is to get to the Ryanair airports for Pescara, Rome, Montpelier, and Frankfurt. (I've read lots about Beauvais!) Thanks so much!

No Reservations Needed
Allison, I have traveled to Italy, Paris (twice), Switz., and Greece. We (my husband, son and daughter) have never reserved a hotel room. We did get a phone card and called ahead to the convent in Rome listed in Rick's book to reserve a couple of rooms. We were in Vernazza when we called. We had called ahead to Vernazza from Padua (we stayed there because it was loads cheaper than Venice and only 20 minutes by train) But when we got to Vernazza they had given our room away. We just went to the square and looked pitiful until someone came up and offered us a room. It turned out to be a small apartment with it's own kitchen and washer. We got off the train at about 9:30 pm in the freezing cold and rain (it was mid June) in Interlaken and went to Fritz's B&B (Fritz is the owner, the name of the B&B is in Rick's book also)we found a sign on the door that directed us down the street to his residence and we knocked there and asked for a room and he had one for us and came back to the B&B and checked us in. Long story but my point is don't bother with reservations. My parents think we are crazy to go with our children (now ages 10 & 12) all over Europe without reservations. But we have won them over to our way of travel and my parents (in their 70's) are going to Germany with us in June this year. Don't be afraid you can always find a room.

This is the answer to Katherine Fanelli about going to St Petersburg Russia. Within your time-frame it won't really matter when you go. Though I would say the three busiest tourist weeks of the year are around 22nd of June (the longest white night...). If you could change the time of your trip for August you might consider to join our small group (August 4-19).
No, there is no sense to fly to another city (usually round tickets to Moscow or to St. Petersburg cost the same).

One Way tix — W. Europe to Mpls or New York
Hi, Looks like two of us will be needing to find a (cheap as possible) one way flight back to USA in early June, pref. to Minneapolis but east coast would be OK too. We could depart from any W. Europe city (Prague to London), hope to manage it in early June. Any help appreciated. Should we plan ahead (preferable at this point), or wait til last minute? Anyone used Airhitch or Airtech successfully for two? Please email any tips, thanks!

St. Pete, when and how
I need to get to St.Petersburg Russia from New York City. Does anyone have any tips about this? Does it make more sense and cost any less to fly into another city and find my way there by train/ferry etc. Also, I have leeway as to when... but it has to be between June 10th and July 30th. Help me pick the best 14day period!

Weather in Germany in June
Tina,
I live in Germany so feel qualified to answer your question on the weather in June. It is unpredictable. Bring a jacket or sweat shirts for the evenings, pants and shorts for the day time. you will find Germany is not that formal of a country. I don't know your age, but most women over 30 do not wear jeans here. If you get caught in a rain storm, inexpensive umbrellas can be bought just about anywhere tourist might be.
The Romantic road is very beautiful with lots to see. Many villages and local wineries, churches and castles.Rothenburg is a great place to stay and see some sights. Try not to miss the night time tour on around the wall of the city.

trains in Italy
It's easy to travel between these destinations by train. There is at least one direct train every hour from Milan to Venice and one direct train every hour from Venice to Udine. Keep in mind that to get to Udine from Milan by train, you have to go thru Venice except for 2 trains a day that go directly to Udine from Milan. Use the link below to check times and schedules of any trains in Europe.

Hotel Speronari-Milan
We stayed at the Hotel Speronari in Milan last year. It was fine. Clean, secure, and a great location by the subway and the Duomo. Be prepared to walk up three flights however. I would stay there again.

Eastern Europe and the Euro.
To Michelle, regarding Eastern European Countries and Euro.
In May'04 ten new European countries will be joining European Union, majority of them from former
Eastern Europe. The monetary change to Euros is not going to take place right away, it will take between 3-5 years depending on individual countries. Untill then all of them will keep their national currencies. So no need to worry about use of Euros in Eastern Europe. The prices are not going to go up overnight, though they have been creeping up slowly in the last few years. Most prices are much less than in Western Europe, but some are almost the same. I know that mostly by example of Poland and Czech Republic.
The best way to change your money into a local currency, as in most places , is simply using your versteller card from your own bank. That way you are always assured of getting the best exchange rates. Another way is to go to local exchange places that abound all over, especially in cities and bigger towns. They will take your Dollars and Euros and will give you equvalent in the local currency. Their exchange rates can vary, so it is a good idea to compare at a couple of places.
Do not ever change money with people in the streets, even if they insist. In many instances
foreign tourists were given old currency, out of circulation and with no value. This is notorious especially around the Old Town in Prague.
