Travel on TV and Video: 2008

At Europe Through the Back Door, we of course recommend the "Rick Steves' Travels in Europe" public TV show. But there's lots more travel on TV and video. What other educational travel shows are worth recommending? And which movies set in Europe are best for whetting a traveler's appetite?

ATTN: George
Hahaha George, you got that idea from that new Fuse show Excellent Adventure didn't you? It does look like a pretty cool show though, I'll probably check it out tonight.

Samatha Brown
I have watched Globe Trekker, Samatha Brown, Anothy B and Zimmer. None of them have the depth or bring out the real essence of the places like Steve. Brown spends half of the show telling you she does not know what she is doing and has the most expensive hotel room in the city - but it has a great view. Globe Trekker is second in my book to Steve - not as interesting for what I would do in that location.

Fun Travel Show
There is a travel show on mojohd.com (or download on iTunes) that features a host showing the local drinks and drinking games. It's a fun, good natured show. My favorite is the Belgium episode. It's called "Three Sheets" and the host is Zane.

European DVDs
If you can buy a region-free, NTSC>PAL converting DVD player, you can order DVDs from Europe, including ones that have never been shown on U.S. TV, not even on cable or PBS. So if there's a European film that your friend who goes to film festivals raved about but which has never been released in the U.S., you can go to that country's Amazon site and order it. But I must repeat that it will not play on a normal North American DVD player. You have to buy a modified DVD player from an online retailer, although some newer computers can act as a region-free DVD player, subject to certain limitations.

Rick's DVDs
I purchased the Rick Steves 70 show DVD set when it came out and recently purchased the 16 Classic Shows 1995-1999 DVDs. There was no need to buy the Classics as all these episodes are included on the 70 show set. Unfortunately this information is not found in the item descriptions so that's my word of warning.

Travel With Kids Guides on DVD
There is an excellent new travel guide series available on DVD called "Travel With Kids" - It follows a real life family and thier two young boys on vacation/adventures to Paris, London, Mexico, Hawaii, Caribbean, Ireland and many more places. Kids love watching them and they are great for parents to get ready for a trip with kids. Travel With Kids is available on Amazon. If you are planning a trip with the family, or want to check out one of thier featured destinations, the shows are very informative, entertaining.. and educational for the kids!
