Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 4 p.m. this afternoon to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk, Underground/Tube orientation, followed by a traditional Sunday roast dinner together. Walking: light.

Day 2: Whitehall and the National Gallery

This morning we'll begin with a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall, from Big Ben and the Westminster Houses of Parliament to the Renaissance-inspired Banqueting House, punctuated by the smartly-dressed, stony-faced Horse Guards. We'll continue on to learn about the adventures of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square and enjoy a guided tour of the National Gallery's masterpieces, including works by Leonardo, Botticelli, Turner and the Impressionists. After lunch, we'll visit the Churchill War Rooms, where we'll get the inside story on the London Blitz and Britain's leadership during WWII on our guided tour. This would be a perfect evening for the theater (book something in advance from the Colonies or pick up a ticket in London). Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: The Tower and Westminster Abbey

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a peek at the legendary Crown Jewels. After lunch, we'll hop aboard a boat on the Thames and cruise past monuments, skyscrapers and cathedrals on our way to tour the majestic Westminster Abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066. A thousand years of English history lie within its stained-glass splendor and under its stone slabs. We'll finish the day enjoying England's favorite ethnic food with an Indian dinner together. Boat: ½ hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: St. Paul's Cathedral and The City

This morning we'll tour England's national church — Christopher Wren's majestically-domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of WWII. Then we'll continue on with a walking tour of The City, the oldest part of London and now its financial heart. After our pub lunch together at The Counting House (an elegant former bank), your afternoon is free to enjoy one of London's many museums (perhaps the Victoria and Albert Museum) or take a leisurely stroll through one of the many beautiful parks. This is another good night for the theater. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Train: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: The British Museum and Library

This morning we'll dive into the treasures of the British Library, including the Magna Carta, Gutenberg's Bible — even Beatles lyrics! Then we're off to tour the British Museum and the chronicle of Western Civilization — the Elgin marbles, Rosetta Stone, mummies and more. The rest of your afternoon is free for the Imperial War Museum, shopping around Covent Garden, or other sightseeing. Before meeting for our "last supper," we'll admire the city and raise a toast to new friends aboard the London Eye. Cheers!  Walking: strenuous.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today.  Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train or bus from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Activity Level

Our tours are physically active! It’s an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of London in 7 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily...

  1. Carry your luggage up several flights of stairs to reach your hotel room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate around the city on your own.
  5. Be able to climb many flights of stairs in and out of the London Underground system.

This was a fine tour, very different from the Best of Europe, Eastern Europe and Spain that we had done. We spent a great deal of time getting to and from the attractions by foot and I didn't find neighborhood walks all that fascinating. The museums and especially the British Library were wonderful and the theater was in class all it's own. The tour provided a good mix of organized activities and time on your own.

It was excellent from the start[INVALID]introductions and the welcome meal. We were well aware of meeting times, received information about where we would be traveling beforehand, and were also given time to go off on our own. The places [INVALID]ed were truly the best of London and provided a broad variety for many interests, from the Churchill war rooms to the National Gallery.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment from the tour was the Churchill War Rooms- learning how all of England's WW2 business was conducted in underground bunkers that were perfectly reconstructed. It was interesting to learn and realize what may have happened had the building been bombed or discovered by the enemies."

The tour was a great mix of time spent with the group and time to explore on own. We definitely saw the high points of London and got suggestions for other locations. I appreciated the emphasis on public transportation and learning how to navigate London independently. I feel confident that I could return to London and environs and get around like a local. The hotel was conveniently located for the major sites and transportation. Overall I loved the tour and it exceeded expectations.

It was a good tour, but not on top of my tours I've taken. I blame myself for that. If I had read/studied for London, I would have appreciated this tour a lot more. Also, I was ready to come home after my two-week tour of Ireland. Maybe I should have taken this tour first. Fortunately, my new roommate and I got along very well and spent our free time together.

I really loved our tour guide, Tom. He was fun, friendly, SUPER knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. He was a total pro. Having the benefit of Tom's knowledge made things much more interesting and also easier, even when we were going to go on our own. Having been to London before, I knew how to get about on the Tube and would have preferred to meet the group at the destination rather than waiting around and entering the Tube all at the same time.

"The British Library! I hadn't known about it and absolutely LOVED it. Seeing the Codus Sianaticus, Guttenburg Bible, King Henry's and Anne Bolyn's letters, John Lennon's handwritten lyrics, among many other items, was a surprise to me. Our overall experience was one of lots of fun and wonder at all of the exciting places we visited. It was our first time in London and, by the end of the week, I felt like a Londoner! What a great experience! This was our first tour ever and, wow, I'm sure we will schedule another one. Our guide, Tom, was extremely knowledgeable and gave us not only facts about the sights we visited, but also provided interesting stories about each. I enjoyed the tour immensely. It was well organized and very interesting, kept to time schedules, helped us learn to get around London on our own using the Tube, trains and buses, etc. Walking was good for us and allowed us to experience the city and its people in every day life as well, and we had free time to either rest and regroup or explore on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The history of London and its monarchy and the proud way they respect their soldiers who have served and are currently serving the country. Tradition is a big part of the culture. This survey includes the comments of Fran Derry. There is no longer a "back door" to London. The city is eating itself alive because of the influx of tourists, business visitors and foreign real-estate purchasers. London is a fabulous place to visit but we recommend this tour offering be deleted in its entirety as it provides minimum value and enjoyment for money. Leave it to do-it-yourself travellers who can then congratulate or blame themselves for their experiences.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"These, unfortunately, occurred on our own private time, not tour time. Seeing London as a member of one commercial tour group among countless others is akin to participating in a knockout roller derby or an NHL hockey match. Yes, London is that popular and that crowded; tour groups, inherently, do not have the flexibility to adapt or adjust to that type of environment."

Gillian was a fantastic tour guide. Our group was friendly and we were a good match. We got to see everything we wanted in London, which is a very big city and obviously it is hard to see everything. It was important that we got instructed on how to use the Tube, as that helped for times when we were not with our tour guide. A wonderful experience. Well planned, not only with regard to all that we saw, but also in giving us a "feel" for London and its people, places, and history. Also, the tour method is excellent; a LOT of walking, but that gave us a much better and more intimate and informal view than if we had been on a bus every day, and the relatively small group allowed us to always be close to all that was happening and to get to know one another. Robert, our guide, was excellent (more below).

My previous experience in London was 25 years ago, and I certainly noticed changes. Where did all the people with British accents go? We did not meet them at our hotel or even in the restaurants. It was a good itinerary, although two days in a row of "strenuous walking" at the start of the tour was exhausting. "Spending the day in Windsor. After the hustle and bustle of London, it was wonderful to get away for a day and spend time just enjoying the countryside. A close #2 was afternoon tea at The Crusted Pipe in Covent Garden. We sat outside and the opera singers combined with the formal "tea" was a great experience!"

The overall tour experience was outstanding and as noted Tom is a treasure! After we left London and the tour we proceeded to Paris to meet our daughter who was studying there. We toured Paris on our own and I must say there was quite a difference not having an expert guide and not be able to make as efficient use of our time. (This is in spite of the fact that I used the Rick Steve's guidebook and audio tours.)

Our tour experience was over the top!! We are new at traveling abroad and were looking for a company to trust where we would get our moneys worth! The size of this group was perfect for meeting new people and for getting around as well as we did.

The theater is not a part of the tour but Tom gave us valuable information on how and where to buy tickets. We saw 'War Horse" and it was truly amazing. The theater was so much smaller than the ones in Houston so there didn't appear to be any 'bad' seats."

The tour was exactly what was advertised. London is a great city characterized by all of it's iconic sites and wonderful history. No question about that! London is unique because it is: -Polite (several people gave us their seats on the Tube) -Quiet (no blaring horns or loud talk) -Clean (many street sweepers) -Not filled with homeless unfortunates on every block. We appreciated the small group and the free time allowed to indulge special interests. We couldn't possibly see them all.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were in London during the birth of the Royal baby (Charlotte Elizabeth Diana) and during the election, and during the VE Day activities. The WOW moments were impromptu: - Walking down Pall Mall and seeing the Horse Guards and the Guards practice their routes (much better than the changing of the Guards). - While riding a bus to dinner, having a Londoner pop her head up from her phone and her work to and announce that the Queen visited Kensington Palace that day to visit the baby."

Very enjoyable. Learned lots and I loved London. I suspect part of the reason was that areas of possible frustration were anticipated by our very competent leader. I felt like I was taking a tour of the "real" London, although we certainly saw the top spots. This was our first tour experience and I felt like we did not waste as much time as we usually do figuring things out. It was a very interesting and fun week.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is difficult to narrow down to a favorite, but it would be the opening ceremony at the Tower of London. Certainly the Tower itself is a don't miss, but the mood was set with the ceremony. I appreciated that we could tour the Tower at our own pace, too. I also really enjoyed the serendipitous moment on the mall when we saw the horse guards rehearsing for V-E day. From the moment we met Tom and our group, we knew it was going to be a great tour. Tom was so friendly and funny and the group seemed to fit together well. People had several things in common and everyone seemed easy to get along with. Each day of the tour itself was awesome. There was so much to see and do in London and we savored every minute of it. We valued our "alone" time, but loved being reunited with Tom and the group for another adventure. We loved London, too!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were two moments. Tom took us to Buckingham Palace and because it was a "bank holiday," we got to walk right up the road that is normally blocked off and see the guards march by for the changing of the guard ceremony. This was not officially on the tour - it was Tom's little extra for us!! Awesome. Also, the last dinner with Tom & our group. Tom had something memorable to say about everyone and gave us each a thoughtful souvenir. It showed how well he knew us. Tom is the best!"

I came into this tour as a single under-25 female traveler who doesn't drink or party. I specifically chose a Rick Steves tour because I knew it would attract people of a more similar mind-set. Overall that is exactly what I got and I loved it. I loved the focus that the tour guide (Tom) gave on teaching us all how to embrace London as our temporary home-town and treat it as such. That was my biggest take-away from the tour. London became my home.

One of the most fulfilling and eventful vacations with my family to date. This was my first Rick Steve's tour, and my first tour ever, and it was wonderful! The number of sights and experiences included was amazing and well worth the money. I'm pretty independent, so the extra free time each day was important to me and allowed me to explore other sights or just shop on my own. This tour just made me want to go back to London again someday to revisit a few sights and to explore more of London. I feel confident that I could return on my own and be able to get anywhere.

"This is so hard to say because everything was fantastic! But for an actual "wow" experience, I would have to say riding on the London Eye on our last evening. This is my second tour, and the experience this time was just as excellent as the first. This year, our Guide suggested shifting the schedule to accommodate the tube schedule changes for the Christmas and New Year holiday. It is wonderful to realize there are still craftsmen of that calibre working today. And I really wanted that Festive Dinner table setting!"

My experience in London was amazing. I felt very comfortable and confident about the tour itinerary. It was extremely well organized and executed. I appreciated using public transportation because I experienced more of London that way. And our tour guide was great.

"My favorite "wow" moment was seeing Windsor Castle from the what they call "the long walk." Our tour guide told us about this view, and how to get there, before we took the official Windsor Castle tour. So when we were done with the official tour, I went to the long walk and gasped at the amazing view, both toward the tree-lined path and back toward the castle. I have our tour guide to thank for this incredible experience. Plus, I got some amazing photos to have with me, forever!"

My first time across the Atlantic Ocean. The UK has so much history and modern construction. It is truly a cross-breed wonderland. The food in the beginning was unusual, but as the day evolved on our Tour, I found some amazing Pub's and small resturants. I had my first bangers and mash, what a treat! "That is a really hard one, there were so many. I really liked getting to the Tour of London early so we could see the ceremony of the unlocking of the main gate. But then there was Windsor Castle too and the Museums and Cathedrals, so hard to chose. Maybe at St. Paul's at the tomb of the unknown soldier after Tom told us the history and then recited 'In Flanders Fields'. Most of us were a little teary, it was very moving."

This was my first Rick Steves' tour. I was scheduled to go on the Prague & Budapest tour but my travel partner's mother got sick and we had to cancel. I decided to apply my canceled trip to the London tour and the Rick Steves' staff were very helpful in switching and applying my monies to the new tour. "St George's Chapel at Windsor - in addition to its great historical significance, it is the most beautiful building of its kind I have seen. A "Wow" moment not quite part of the ETBD experience but made possible by it was a visit to the Royal Albert Hall where with about 20 others taking the tour of the Hall with us, we sat, in an otherwise empty Hall, in the Grand Tier snug up against the Queen's own box and watched and listened to James Taylor rehearse several sets for that evening's concert."

This was a wonderful tour in many ways. I had been to London before but not since 1997. I needed a refresher course. I learned that London now is not the same London of the '90s but that it has changed in ways that still make it one of the most diverse cities in the world. The trip was also a celebration of a significant birthday (okay, 70). If I have any criticism, it is that the trip was too short and too densely scheduled with not enough free time. I would have liked one more day.

Second time to London but it has been twenty years. RoystonJohn lead us through the Tube like a champ. As with our first tour (Paris and the Heart of France with William), this tour with Tom was excellent. London was more than expected & we have fallen in love with this city!"

This was my first international tour and I was thoroughly satisfied and in many instances, my experience exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed the MyHotelChelsea and spent a lot of time walking in the neighborhood. I enjoyed the proximity to the church, store, and park and especially enjoyed the unique eating establishments that were only a few minutes away that served outstanding meals and had a very friendly environment. I felt comfortable with the walking and the schedule that was provided.

"Saint Paul's Cathedral, I walked to the very top and was able to take in London in a 360 degree panoramic view. The history and the architecture was incredible and awe inspiring. A very memorable time and I will never forget those that are buried there and memorized."

As usual, with a Rick Steves Tour, the tour members were "the best!" Add an excellent tour guide and how can you go wrong? { We won't mention periodic downpours!} For such amount of time in a huge city, we hit all the highlights-a nice mix of group time and free time.

"It was hard to choose one "Wow" moment out of many special sights and experiences-Poets Corner at Westminster with burial sites of musicians/authors that you'd only read about, World Famous paintings at the National Gallery, world changing documents and monuments at the British Library/Museum, and of course the head-spinning décor at Windsor Palace. It was a nice "cherry on top" ending to our trip to have the group gathered in a London Eye "pod" to review the London sights we had seen together."

This was my 2nd trip to London. It was even more enjoyable this time. Being able to see everything we studied in school was amazing. We took a side tour to Buckingham Palace which was incredible. I was able to see even more historical sites than I did during my first visit. I've never walked so much in my life but it was fun and very interesting to say the least.

London was a lot of fun - so many great sites to see. Our tour guide Tom did an excellent job of rallying our group thru a very busy city in an unrushed manner with very clear instructions. He was very knowledgeable and his sense of humor kept us laughing. He was personable with each individual and was one of the best parts of the tour. It was a great city tour and we found London an easy city to get around, especially since we share a common language.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A memorable day was coming up from the tube and seeing Big Ben and hearing the bells at noon. The day at Windsor Castle was great and it's hard to imagine someone actually lives there. Tour of the Tower of London with all its history was "crowned" off by seeing the impressive Crown Jewels. And seeing St. Paul's Cathedral still standing after all the trials and fire of WWII was amazing. Loved being able to use the Tube and get around a new city on our own."

OUTSTANDING, OUTSTANDING, OUTSTANDING!! And I even came down w/food poisoning (probably from a takeaway lunch) & missed 2 tour days (but I got to spend it watching British TV in my hotel room, which was also interesting!). I LOVED the London tour - & would love to return; because my guide (& your company's model)empowered me to feel confident to do so!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can't think of just one! Walking the steps & aisles of St Paul's, hearing Big Ben chime for the 1st time, paying for something with Brit currency, learning about Churchill at the War Rooms, "minding the gap", remembering to "look right" before crossing the road, & one VERY special moment on our own (achieved w/Tom's advice on how to get there): using the crosswalk at Abbey RD while posing like the Beatles (& then spending about an hour watching other travelers do the same)!"

Brilliant tour. Orchestrated by the best tour guide I've ever had. Tom is a passionate, caring, personable light of the tour. I seriously doubt any other tour will surpass...but I hope to be mistaken. Tom's blend of walking, "Tubing", bussing, training, not only provide the group a tour of the city but also taught us how to get around independently. Tom's humble manner and extraordinary knowledge of the city created a wonderful exchange of thoughts between the group. Overall: The best tour.

Robert was excellent! He definitely made it a wonderful week for our family. We were very happy with our choice to do the tour rather than using the guide book to visit London on our own. We wouldn't have wanted to miss out on all of Robert's knowledge and commentary as we walked. The tour is very well done. We will definitely consider another tour in the future.

We felt that we got a good overview of the city of London, seeing the important sites and historical buildings. Learning the history of the city and those who were instrumental in its development as a world center was important to us. We also feel that we have a good understanding of the current culture as well. It's a great city and we are very happy to have gotten a chance to become a part of it, if only briefly.

Our guide Robert was great he knew lots of local information. Was never in a real hurry and always seemed to know the pace the group needed to get from place to place. I never felt like I needed to skip a part or hurry to catch up. At one point we lost track of one of the kids he stationed himself at the exit while I went back thru the tower till we found him. I think my oldest and myself bored him to tears with pointing out all the exotic sports cars along the way.

Given the time and money invested, my expectations were quite high. On virtually every count, the tour exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide Robert was nothing short of extraordinary. His knowledge, personality and guidance enabled us to truly enjoy and experience London. Equipping us with the skill to negotiate the Tube and Bus systems allowed us to venture easily on our own and make the best use of our available free time. I would heartily recommend this tour!

It was our first Rick Steve's Tour and it was great. It was great largely due to Robert Halkett's expertise, understanding of London's history, his ability to explain it and relate to our group. He is definitely a keeper for your organization but I suspect you know that.

Our London trip was our first Rick Steve's tour. I was apprehensive until I met our tour guide Robert. He was knowledgeable and personable as well. He made all of us feel like a big family. The trip was a "Bucket List" item for Judy. I loved being able to see all of the things that were important to her. I was reading a John Gailbrath (aka JK Rowling) book and got to see many of the places mentioned in the book, including the hero's office site and favorite local pub. Your maps were invaluable in tracking his comings and goings. Especially appreciated not having to wait in lines and extra stuff like the opening of the gates @ the London Tower.

Favorite "WOW" moment

The trip met or exceeded all of my expectations. The location of the hotel was ideal (near Buckingham Palace), and I really appreciated the breakfast buffet provided in the dining room each morning and the little mini-mart across the street where I could get water and snacks. We had a nice group of 20 friendly people from various parts of the country, and representing a variety of ages. Our guide Robert was very knowledgeable and helpful.

"I most enjoyed the boat trip down the Thames River, because you get a good perspective of where things are located in relation to one another, and you can see some of the sites that aren't on the tour, like the Globe Theatre. The weather was hot and sunny the whole week (mid-July), which made the cool breezes of the water all the more enjoyable. One of the crew members on the boat gave a wonderful narration of the sites along the way."

Wonderful intro to London and coverage of all the major tourist attractions. Especially enjoyed the relatively early tours to the Tower of London and the British Library as we beat the crowds :) Appreciated Robert's detailed backstory of the history of the various buildings in the districts we visited, brought the area to life. I hadn't really thought about the long term effect on London from the Blitz, the current juxtaposition of old/new really brings that out.

The people in Great Britain and London are so friendly and warm making the trip wonderful. We traveled to Bath for two nights prior to the tour and stayed two extra nights going to see Shakespeare at the Globe and a train trip to Cambridge. The trip was a gift for my grand daughter upon her graduation from high school. My youngest son and travel partner also came along on the trip. We had a wonderful trip spending quality time together and experiencing London, and the theatre.

"I loved Windsor Castle. The furnishings and the atmosphere were so great. We were able to see the changing of the guard prior to our tour of the castle, which really set the mood. We loved all things British, the Tower of london, with the unlocking of the gates in the early morning before all the other tourists arrived, the crown Jewels, and the Beefeater tour was great."

This is my third Rick Steve's tour. My previous tours were multiple cities (Hear of Italy and France), therefore I reckon the experience should be different from the single city tour. London had surpassed my expectations! I always thought that there is no place like New York City, but boy, London really topped it! We traveled by public transportation and on foot, just like the locals. After learning the public transportation system, we were able to go to places on our own in ease!

I had a fabulous time. The hotel was wonderful, our tour guide was very good. I very much liked the fact that we walked so much of the time, took the Tube and city buses, rather than be on a tour bus. On the Rick Steve's web page describing the tours it The sight selected a that we would see were perfect. My favorite was the boat ride. The restaurants chosen were also excellent.

I enjoyed the trip however when you say there is a lot of walking, you are not kidding. I think a couple of people dropped out because it was just too much. I don't think it is necessary to walk for an hour or so to two museums where you will walking around for another four hours or more, and then another walk home.

This is the answer for #3, sorry! 1.Seeing the Crown jewels in the Tower of London almost alone, right after being the ONLY people present for the opening of the gates with the Queen's keys will be an experience I will remember forever!!!WOW! 2.The Tour de France was a bonus to an already fabulous time. Another experience of a life time being there in front of Buckingham palace at the finish line!Hip-Hip-Hooray! 3. Westminster Abbey and the stellar job Tom did with that tour! Need more than 500

The hotel was lovely and everyone was so kind and helpful there. 3. The food was good, I wasn't a personal fan of Indian food. Had a bad experience with the food for lunch at the Counting House, other than that is was better than I expected. 4. Loved the London Eye! that was an unexpected surprise since it wasn't on the itinerary. Thanks!"

The tour was spectacular in every sense, and our tour guide, Tom, added tremendous value that one could not have experienced visiting the same sites and events on one's own. That is the real value of the Rick Steves' tour. The itinerary was well planned and covered a tremendous amount of ground during the seven days in London, however, adequate time was spent at each venue, and there was still time available for individual exploration.

Just to let you know, I have been on several other tours with others. I am always impressed how great you get us through to the nicest places at the shortest amount of time. I liked the "buddy" system or is that just Tom's idea? To sum it up, I could have stayed another week w/o any trouble.
