Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including visits to a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. We'll end our afternoon at the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages, where after an introduction, you’ll be free to visit the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry and have a rare, up-close look at the artistry of original stained-glass windows from Sainte-Chapelle. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood which was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy a wine tasting and dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. Our walk will end at the Carnavalet Museum, a cavalcade of Parisian history, which you can visit on your own. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face-to-face with the works of Rafael, Delacroix and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today.  It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Paris was a great experience for us. Our guide Rolinka did a great job of leading us through the city while explaining what we were seeing. It is evident she has a great deal of experience at being a tour guide.

Logistics were outstanding; hotel was just great; the hired tour guides were excellent. Our tour guide, Rowinka, while informative was excessively rigid on the schedule; told a lot about her life; was not interested in the lives of the people on the tour and gave them little chance to express themselves. We spent too much time using the Metro when walking about ground would have given us a better feel for the city. The free time was just right; the Rick Steves guide was outstanding

Loved the hotel we stayed at (Hôtel Londres Eiffel) and the staff was most attentive, especially Arnaud and Cedric. We couldn't have had a better guide than Rolinka, who knew the history of the different sites we visited and taught us how to be self sufficient with the Metro system as well as the rail system. The tour was planned such that we all had enough free time to visit new sites as well as re-visit sites we visited with our guide. Overall enjoyed the Paris Tour

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "wow' moment had to be visiting the Louvre and seeing the Winged Victory at the head of the stairs, then visiting the Venus de Milo and finally viewing the Mona Lisa. Seeing these masterpieces on television and then actually being in their presence, that experience will live with me the rest of my life."

I thought it was a perfect tour! I loved having the orientation to the city and having the metro pass and museum pass provided. The tour allowed us to build confidence a little at the time on navigating the city. There was good balance of guided tours and enough time to go off on our own as well. I really enjoyed getting to know the others on the tour as well. It was nice to know that when together there was nice company and folks looking out for you.

Our first trip to Paris was design to cover all the necessary places and monuments we dreamed and read about. Happily, the first impressions of Paris and our guide, Rolinka, diffidently will last us a lifetime. Thereby, giving us the confidences for future return trips to Paris or other areas of France. We are typical Americans and spoke little French, however found the Parisians to be generous with their patients, warm and inviting to their culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment of many actually came from Rolinka's encouragement to explore Paris. After walking the full-length of the Champs-Elysees during the Christmas market displays, viewing outside holiday shops and many famous store fronts, I walked up the Arc de Triomphe to view Paris in the holiday spirit. Looking over the city, I found the sights and sounds of Paris memorizing; so surreal from where I stood. Paris will always belong to the world and have a special place in my heart."

The trip of a life time is a phrase I keep hearing from friends and family after they see the pictures and the stories. This was the first time out of the country for my husband and me. Passports were waiting for their first stamps. The sights, sounds, food, even the weather were wonderful. I was not sure what to expect, but this was just the best way to start traveling for me. After the first hour with our guide Patrick and the wonderful group on this tour I felt happy with our decision.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking toward the Cluny museum, I was struck with the age of all the history surrounding me. The Cluny houses the tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn, I was unaware of them. The age of the beheaded statues, the civilizations long before what exits now, all very powerful. We made our way up old stairs, quirky hallways, many interesting religious exhibits. The room where the tapestries hang is quiet almost demanding reverance. This moment was the high point for me. Monet was a close second."

Every detail of the tour was expertly handled from the moment of arrival at our hotel to our departure. With Patrick as our guide, it became effortless moving about the city. This tour was ideally balanced between visiting the famous sites with an expert guide and the freedom to venture out on our own. I cannot imagine a better tour experience.

Well organized, thoughtfully planned. Covered a lot in the allotted time. I liked the balance of planned touring with time on our own. I also liked the fact that 1/2 the dinners were with the group, the other 1/2 on our own. The physical intensity/amount of walking involved in the tour was as demanding as advertised. The other tour participants were largely very pleasant/congenial.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I don't consider myself to be an art connoisseur and am not particularly drawn to Impressionism, but I was definitely "wowed" by the Monet exhibit at the Orangerie. I loved the Rodin Museum, but was most surprised by my response to the Monet exhibit. My favorite non-museum "wow" moment was a meal that we had at Le P'tit Troquet. We had great food/meals in Paris, but this meal was amazing: a ham-and-cheese tart appetizer, beef bourguinon, and a to-die-for dark chocolate tart"

Paris is wonderful. Our guide, Patrick, was terrific, talking about Paris, teaching us how to use the metro and always worrying about losing one of us. He was funny and never in a bad mood. He, like all the guides we had at the museums, was enthusiastic about about his job. Can't say enough about him. People on the tour were great. Everyone seemed to have fun everyday, I know my wife and I did. It was too short. I would do it again and recommend this to everyone. Everyone should see Paris.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were told that the tours of the Eiffel Tower were booked months in advance but one night my wife and I strolled over as it was only 600 meters from our hotel. We took pictures and noticed people buying tickets to go up the Tower. We were on top of the Eiffel Tower 20 minutes later. I don't know that you have to go to the top but we did and the view is unbelievable, truly the city of lights. I loved the museums but that time up there with my wife was the best."

Loved it. It was a good group of intrepid travelers, but, definitely keep the grumpiness pledge! The planned activities were plentiful and thorough. Free time became more valuable later in the week as my comfort level increased and I felt ready to pursue my particular interests on my own. I am satisfied that I have seen MANY of Paris' highlights, although I'd like another week to further pursue my list. Early Nov. turned out to be fine: less $, fewer tourists, good enough weather.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Stepping forward to behold my first view of Versailles! I also can't stop thinking about Marie Antoinette's thatched village: it caused me to see her less as a historic figure and more as a "bird in a gilded cage"--a young woman, essentially imprisoned by her contrived circumstances, who found a way to feel connected with a more natural life within the strict parameters of her situation, which turned out to be desperate indeed. I also found the Rodin Museum to be a magical place."

Most enjoyable. Arnaud was absolutely fabulous. His orientation talk got us off on the right foot, with valuable insights into the French people and appropriate etiquette, which served us very well throughout the visit to Paris. Very witty and entertaining too, as were all of his talks. The other guides he had for us were also excellent. Restaurants for dinner were very good (we went back to more than one of them), as were the menu choices. Hotel was great too. They even have face cloths!

This was our second Rick Steves tour so we had a general idea of what to expect and we were not disappointed. We appreciate the intense educational/sight-seeing parts that are laced with free time to see some places that the tour did NOT cover. Arnaud was outstanding, always approachable, always caring; and during all this he was always watching out for pick-pockets and gypsies. The hotel was clean and cozy, in a great location and the Staff were extremely pleasant.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When Arnaud had us make our initial introductions he jokingly said to include where we're from, for example "a small town in Nebraska." Well, I'm from a small town in Nebraska so I could hardly wait for my turn to surprise him. But the surprise was on me when a couple ahead of me said "and we're from a small town in Nebraska!" So by the time it was my turn to say this, Arnaud was doubly surprised."

It was WONDERFUL! I was most anxious to see Paris as I have traveled quite a bit, have even been to France, but not Paris. I was traveling alone, but at no time did I feel uncomfortable. I was extremely pleased in the itinerary and felt that I got to see and visited those specific areas of interest. The hotel was lovely and just what I envisioned. Having the breakfast at the hotel was excellent as it was one thing to not be concerned about and got us ready for a very busy day.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"What I pictured Paris to look like in my mind's eye, was just what it turned out to be. I am a city dweller and love the ambiance of walking around, stopping for a drink or a meal and just enjoying the people. I have dreamed of visiting Paris all my life. Paris, and the tour, more than exceeded my expectations. The tour hit all the big sites. Our guide, Patrick, was charming, intelligent, patient and genuinely concerned that we enjoy our time in Paris. The additional guides at the Louvre, Versailles, Monmartre, the Orangerie, were all superb. This was my kind of vacation--being in a city brimming with art and culture and learning so much along the way.

"One of my favorite moments was the guided tour of Monet's paintings at the Orangerie. Our guide truly brought the beautiful works to life for me in a way I hadn't considered them before. Really enjoyed our 7-day tour of Paris. Elisabeth was great but unfortunately, she was not able to be our guide only a few days because of a severe back injury. However, she was able to find wonderful replacements for her. The hotel was in a great location and the staff were very kind and accomodating. Overall, my expectations were exceeded. It was a crash course in French history, culture and art. I loved it! Just too little time and too much to do in 7 days. Will have to come back!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Although I took many art history courses in art school, Joelle who was our tour guide at the Orangerie was an amazing font of knowledge regarding the life and art of Claude Monet. Another "wow" moment was standing under the Eiffel tower thinking about the remarkable monumental scale and engineering of the structure for the time it was built."

Liked staying in the neighborhood near the Eiffel Tower because of all the interesting small shops and plenty of restaurants. Great area to walk. Appreciated learning to use the Metro and felt comfortable exploring without a guide a few times. All tour guides were very knowledgable, professional, and personable. I have a new appreciation for many Parisian neighborhoods along with French culture and history. The week's itinerary was well designed with time for self exploration.

Wow, where to start? We hit the ground running on this wonderful introduction to Paris, and it seemed like we were exposed to more than 7 days could hold. Loved that we started our first full day on the Metro and continued to use it as a resource throughout; I would probably be too chicken to give it a go on my own, now I feel fully confident I'd use it anytime. With our main guide William we always felt that we had a friend and a mentor in Paris, he's wonderful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Will always remember our guide Joelle at the Orangerie and her discussion on the huge Monet canvases. About a half hour that completely exploded the view of Monet as some doddering old fellow sentimentally painting waterlillies, and instead views him as a vital link from the traditional notions of painting that proceeded him to the abstract expressionist that he influenced. Amazing."

This is the first time I've done a 7-day city tour. Without the in-between-places bus rides of an in country tour it's quite a concentrated experience. But what other way is there to do Paris? It's such a feast of history, art, food, sights, and sounds and you pack in as much as you can bear. As always on your tours our traveling companions were a congenial group, the guide was excellent, the hotel was wonderful and perfectly located, and there were many good nearby places to eat.

We were familiar with comprehensiveness and intensity of the city tours, having done Rome last year. The emphasis on seeing the major sites, learning to navigate the city by public transportation, touring the major neighborhoods, and having sufficient time to tour on our own is the attraction of learning a city in this type of tour. Our guide, Elisabeth, was remarkably good. She offered a wine tasting, paired with foods, which was very expertly done. This was an unexpected treat.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. This room, so redolent with history, was breathtakingly beautiful. To be in the place where WWI ended, and consequently, WWII began, was very powerful. Absolutely positive. We did not have any surprises or "hidden" fees. The materials provided, reflected the experience and the cost exactly. We found that the type of people joining our tour were easy going, polite, friendly and independent. The majority were also very athletic and some had trained to take the tour. One recommendation is to poll the group at the first group meeting to see if the group would be amenable to 1/2 hour "linger" breaks in each district, prior to lunch.

I did this tour back to back with the 21 day BOE. I knew that the 1.5 days in Paris at the end of BOE wouldn't be enough & felt I wanted to have a more in depth experience. Last been to Paris in, uh...1976. It was hot as heck & all I remember were the smells of dog poo & pissoirs. Still,I wanted a new look at Paris. Very interesting and we were blessed with great weather. We all felt (most of our tour members) that there was too much standing in one place looking at artwork instead of the guides walking and talking so we could see more. There is no way any of us could possibly remember all that the guides told us at each piece of art. We all nearly passed out looking at the Monet lily pads for ever. A 5 min walk thru would have been enough! We all loved the neighborhood walking tours as we kept moving.

My experience was outstanding, Our guide, Marie went way over her duties to please and orientate us. She was terrific. The hotel was very well located and very comfortable. Regarding our tours I suggest that they last a little longer so that we don't have to rush so much through every place we visit. They all ended close to lunch time and we had plenty of extra time to extend them maybe a couple of ours still leaving us with plenty of free time in the afternoon. Both dinners were excellent.

The itinerary was seamlessly [INVALID]d under Marie's leadership. We felt that we were well taken care of, never lost, and handed off to competent local guides. We found the most interesting, out-of-the-way places, that gave us the real feel of Paris. Our favorite bistro was Chez Janou in the Marais. This was not an official stop for the group but is in the Guide to Paris book. We highly recommend.

Our tour of Paris was awesome, we were amazed at how much we were able to do in such a short time. Under Marie's very capable instruction we were able to learn the bus, metro and rail accomodations easily and after each guided tour segment were able to make our way around the city comfortably and with confidence. It was good, but rushed. Need more time at museums and to see Notre Dame though. I felt it was very rushed. There is no way you can see Notre Dame properly given the time one must wait in line. Forget about going to the top. No time for that line. Then you have to eat. Who has time for that? A number of us chose to skip the Notre Dame line and eat instead.

After learning how to get around Paris, it would have been nice to stay on for another week or more to just take our time and visit some of the places which Marie talked about but which we did not have time to see. What can you say about Paris that hasn't been said? It was my first visit there, my husband had been before. I was afraid of being overwhelmed by it all, but our guide Toni and the pace and planning of the tour made it easily and delightfully do-able. This was our third Rick Steve's tour and we would do it all again. Only negative is I wish we would have stayed a few more days to see more and do more after we had been orientated. This is an excellent way to explore the City of Light on our own when we get free time. This was my family's fourth trip to Europe and first RS guided tour. I have read the RS books for each prior tour and made extensive use of info in the books, which I found incredibly helpful and fun. Most of the tour was excellent. I was with two teenagers. We arrived early and sadly two of us ate something bad so we suffered a bit, but that's not your fault. William was an excellent guide and supportive assistant throughout. Our guides for the Louvre and Versailles were excellent, too. The boat ride on the Seine was terrible, though. Crowded, uncomfortable, and uninformative. Ditch it. Add Viator tour of Eiffel Tower (early) and the Catacombs (we did with Aeon Tours).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have to be honest. My two favorite wow moments were NOT with the tour. We signed up for the "Skip the line" Eiffel Tower tour with Viator (Alison was the guide). It was excellent and it made for a very good introduction to Paris since one can see the lay of the land and learn a bit of Paris geography from the top. The other "best moment" was the Catacombs tour we signed up for with Aeon tours. Calloway (the guide) was informative, reverent, and hilarious. The teenagers loved him."

The hotel was well placed in a desirable location, near restaurants, and convenient to transportation. Easy to walk to the Eiffel Tower and rue Cler. All guides were helpful and knowledgeable. The tour's [INVALID]ion of must-see sites to visit while in Paris was appropriate. This tour was simply wonderful. Our guide, William, is a native Parisian and knew his food! We were honeymooning and the pace of the trip was perfect. From each morning's Metro briefing to the trivia tidbits offered by the guides, we never stopped learning! There was also plenty of free time to explore on our own.

exceeded expectations. Loved Marie. You weren't kidding about the tour being rigorous! this is a continuation of the "wow" moment from question #3: Another moment was when I got a very up close look at Van Gogh's self-portrait and could see the actual brush strokes. The guides at specific sites added depth to what we saw. Rolinka was a delight AND a good resource and Metro teacher. She was kind to invite us to dinner at her house in Montmartre.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Attending chamber orchestra performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons at Ste. Chapelle. Rolinka arranged for us to get tickets the day of the concert and we sat in the 2nd row. The beauty of the stained glass, the glorious sound created a memory I will always treasure."

Rolinka set the tone of our tour by having us introduce ourselves and then pairing us with a buddy (not someone we already knew). She introduced us to Paris and gave us the confidence to navigate the city on our own. Each day we had a tour experience, either with Rolinka or a site specific guide, and then were encouraged to explore on our own. Having the metro pass and the museum pass allowed us to tailor our free time to our own tastes. I would travel with you again in a heartbeat!

"Hard to choose a favorite out of the whole, but, would have to say coming onto Marie Antoinette's Hameau at Versailles. After the opulence of the palace to see this quiet oasis of tranquility was a surprise. Of course the beauty of the garden and the fabulous weather conditions just made this a truly special memory."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our tour guide hooked us up with tickets to a Vivaldi concert at Sainte Chappelle. It was breathtaking. We just happened to be talking to her about this, because I had problems booking a concert via the internet. Don't know if our tour guide went above and beyond in arranging this. I would like to see the tour enhanced by being able to sign up and pay extra of course for concerts during evenings with no plans."

"See my wife's comments about the lovely concert at Sante Chappelle - a truly "wow" moment. For me, another "wow' was the moment, mid-week, when I realized that I was capable of navigating the city on my own. We had a friendly group largely from the west coast. Everyone got along well. The guide was funny, charming energetic and bursting with stories. I fell in Germany a week or so before coming to Paris and worried that my experience would suffer. However, I found that the tour and our leader could be very flexible. I had a great time despite a banged-up, swollen knee. Elisabeth really is to be commended for her knowledge, flexibility, and good humor. She managed my ducking in and out of our schedule surprisingly well, AND provided several alternative ideas that made me feel as though I was managing well too!

The tour from the very beginning was very organized, informative, and friendly. Having it so organized made me feel relaxed and expectant. I gained insight into the history, art history, and culture. I learned new things. The intent of making visitors independent was accomplished and appreciated. By the end of our time in Paris (we stayed extra days) we were quite good at getting around on the Metro, transferring several times even. We felt confident!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The guided tour of the Orangerie was fabulous. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. Not only do I appreciate Monet more, but also Cezanne, Renoir, and Utrillo. It was a treat for the eyes and ears. I also loved the Orsay. Elisabeth gave us perfect instructions about our visit and we were able to enjoy the 5th floor nearly by ourselves. It was her helpful hints throughout the week that added to the pleasure of our trip."

We had a wonderful tour experience with Elizabeth as our guide. She was excellent in making our first Rick Steves trip as memorable as I imagined Paris would be. Each day of our trip as very exciting and we were glad that we went to Versaille even with a looming strike that could have shut things down. We were happy that it was open. My wife and I loved our Paris in 7 Days trip. This was our first (But not last) trip to Paris and it was everything we imagined it would be. What made this trip special and more memorable for us was the organization, efficiency and the "user friendly" nature of the tour. Our tour guide was fantastic and our group was the best. What we really liked about how the tour was set up was the fact that we had ½ the day to be on our own to explore or even just to relax at a neighborhood café.

Overall I thought the tour was outstanding. It was worth the cost for a first time visitor to Paris, and I found it to be very educational as well as enjoyable. I also appreciated the size of the tour group, which allowed us to develop new friendships that perhaps wouldn't occur in a larger group.

"This is extremely hard to say. There are so many wow moments, from the architecture, to viewing stain glass at churches, to the artwork, to the food, etc. Heck even something as simple as having a coffee at a café while people watching could almost be a "wow" moment. The tour was a positive experience. Nice balance between time together and ' free time.' Information provided by Julie, our tour guide, was very helpful ...she knew what we needed to know so that we could feel confident when on our own or with the group. Providing the " whisperers ' was very helpful, even my husband (who uses hearing aids) was able to hear most of what the guides had to say...thank you. I don't have enough superlatives to tell you how wonderful our experience was. Granted, we were on our honeymoon and a little starry eyed and we had a friend recommend Rick Steve's tours, so we expected a lot. This tour surpassed all that we expected. It was well organized (and I am a stickler for organization), very informative, complete in showing us the highlights of Paris, and most of all FUN. The other people on our tour were wonderful and also fun, no grumps.

Where to start... this was our first Rick Steves tour and for sure will not be our last. We have done lots of world travel so we were concerned the tour would be over-managed (like cruises) or with a bunch of stereotypical American tourist. It turned out to to be the very best vacation we've ever taken. We knew Paris would be great but our tour guide, Julie, was magnificent. Also, the two local tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and positive at every level.

My overall experience in no way reflects upon the quality of the tour. Several days into the tour, I was stricken with abdominal pains, taken by ambulance to emergency room, and admitted to Saint Josef's Hospital. Diagnosis: diverticulitis. I could not continue the tour. Suffice it to say that, all things considered, I was fortunate. I received immediate medical attention, and I had Julie as my guide.

Professionally led, enhanced by on-site experts, touring out of a gem of a hotel, this was the absolute best way to see Paris for the first time. We enjoyed the company of like minded Rick Steves' fans and were pleased with how well we blended together with the tour guide. There was a good mix of tour time and me time so we were able to see most of what appealed to us. The only downside was there simply is too much to see in six days. Darn, I guess that we will just need to go back.

Looking forward to the tour, I had concerns regarding whether my teenage daughter would have a good time with an older group, and whether or not the tour would move fast enough for me. This trip to Paris was a 16th birthday gift for our granddaughter, Ashley. Visiting Paris had been her dream and now my husband and I are wondering what took us so long! We have traveled extensively, but never to Paris. Had we not had a young girl with us, we probably would have merely passed through Paris, given it a couple of days, and then visited many other areas of France. We spent 9 days getting to know Paris. It was perfect.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"That is an impossible answer. Paris is the "quietest" large city I have ever experienced. There are very few honking horns and the buses, cars and motorcycles seem muffled somehow. Every evening, a crowd gathers at the Eiffel Tower and there seems to be a peaceful, low hum of conversation. When Ashley and our group were sipping a little champagne after the good-bye dinner, watching the twinkling Eiffel Tower, she said she did not want to go home. It was very special."

"The first night is especially memorable. We decided to walk to the Eiffel Tower to see evening. The weather was perfect. Hundreds of people, young and old, were enjoying the evening. We purchased a bottle of wine and sat on the grass. The special flashing light display started on the Tower at the top of the hour. It was a spectacular sight. It was a great start to our week in Paris."

It was wonderful! Loved the location of the hotel and the helpful, friendly staff. Our tour guide Elisabeth was exceptional. Her knowledge of the history of Paris, French royalty, the wines of France and the French culture are nonpareil. Her stories were educational and entertaining. She is so charming! Mary Ann was a bonus; the name game comes to mind. I am recommending the tour to family and friends. I feel confident I can navigate Paris on my own now. Can't wait to go back!

This was my fourth visit to Paris, France. This was my first visit to Paris on a tour. Having a Rick Steves tour guide provided an abundance of background information regarding the many historic sites we visited on the tour, Seven Days in Paris. Although I enjoyed my previous independent visits, I much preferred the guided tour experience. Our guide was exceptional and made my visit very fulfilling.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every day was a "wow" experience because Paris has so much to offer in terms of historic districts and sites. An example would be the Notre Dame cathedral, you cannot help but be overwhelmed by the grandeur and historic importance of this site. But that applied to many of the sites we visited in Paris, hard to pick out just one "wow" moment among so many."

The tour provided a great introduction for a first time visitor to the multitude of attractions that Paris has to offer. In the visits to the great museums, you are able to view many of the most famous works of art while also being made aware how much more there is to explore. The same is true in the historical walks in Paris neighbourhoods and the wonderful meals in Parisian restaurants: your appetite is whetted to pursue more experiences on your own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The first "wow" moment was seeing the famous historical monuments from our taxi window: the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower. There was a succession of such moments throughout the tour, but my favourite ones were when I was able to view firsthand works of art that I had long admired, particularly the paintings of Ingres and Degas."

I was traveling with my daughter, and we had a great time, downpours, strikes and all. The skies above Paris (between rainstorms) were exceptionally clear and quite beautiful. I've been to Paris before, but our guide, Elizabeth, took us to a few places I've never been, and I plan to return to examine some of them more closely. It was a great group, and we had a lot of fun.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A double rainbow appeared over the Arc de Triomphe as our tour bus drove by, during a ceremony honoring soldiers of World War One. It was lovely. Our tour guide asked the driver to drive around again for a better view. Interest in Paris Tour began with reading of Edward Rutherford's historical novel "Paris" some time ago and the tour in general did not disappoint. Itinerary did a good job of covering the various districts of interest. The day for Versailles was obviously a disappointment due to the strike but Arlene and I salavged it by leaving immediately upon arrival and returning to Paris for the train to Giverny which turned out to be memorable.

It was a great introduction to Paris, and I left feeling there was so much I would like to do next time. My tour companions were fun & our guide was very informative about Paris. Eating was amazing, expensive & seemed to eat up a lot of time. (Ha, ha!) I needed more clothes as doing laundry took up more valuable time. A Rick Steve's tour is a fantastic way to experience Europe, and we often recommend it to others - although only to those people who we would like to travel with ourselves - never to rude or grumpy people! We love the chance to get close to the local culture; learn about the art, history, and architecture; and also have free time to ourselves. We love that the logistics are handled for us, so we can spend more time seeing museums than figuring out how to get to them, for example.

Arnaud brought the city "alive" in so many ways, it's difficult to choose one. I clearly enjoyed visiting the major attractions, walking the neighborhoods, and meeting interesting people. I was disappointed, however, in the rushed feeling of some walks. Some of the tours were too crowded for my comfort level and I didn't have the level of confidence in our guide that the tour would proceed smoothly. Montmartre and the local guide for that part of the tour was interesting and personable and it probably my favorite part of the Rick Steves tour. The intimate hotel in the heart of Paris, was a perfect start. Your guidebook was one of the best discoveries ever. The various walks pointed out so many wonderful things I would have missed on my own. In general, this was a good tour with a good variety of experiences included in the 7-day tour. My complaints have to do with the hurried pace of the tour; for example, our guide would point out places we should visit for eclairs or chocolates (for example) and then storm off quickly, not giving anyone a chance to sample the wares, which would only take 5-10 minutes at most. The walking pace did not allow photographs without being left behind, and many people in our group struggled to keep up.

The group we went with was friendly and it was nice to do both group and individual activities.

The tour was great. The hotel was great and was centrally located. The staff was great and the breakfast in the mornings were outstanding. The food was great, good variety and fresh. Our tour guide Toni was really good. She was friendly, knowledgeable and conducted the tour and group with professionalism. The local tour guides were exceptional and very knowledgable about the museums and neighborhood. I liked that the tour events went until approx 1/2 a day and then there was free time.

"Monet's Water Lilies in The Orangerie were spectacular. The local guide we had for The Orangerie was spectacular and she gave me a new appreciation of the art that was there that allowed me to see it with a different perspective. The gardens at Versailles were also very beautiful."

Overall tour met or exceeded expectations. Guaranteed visits to most desired sights while providing framework to substitute (e.g., Pere Lachaise Cemetery for Marais Walk) and/or explore on own (e.g., Rodin Museum/Napoleon's Tomb). Including river cruise definite plus. Supplementing Toni w/ individual attraction experts outstanding.

I had a wonderful tour experience! I liked the fact that we started each day with planned activity. Then we were open to go and do what we wanted to do in the afternoon. Some days there was an activity for those who were interested. I also enjoyed the group dinners. I made some new friends on this trip! I would recommend this trip for people who have never been to Europe and those who have been before.

I very much appreciated the extent to which your pre-trip info and tour guide empowered us in exploring on our own. We enjoyed the group events, but getting around Paris on the mtro and bus was a joy because of the metro-pass and guidance you provided. Of course, the museum pass was very helpful as well. Wish we could have picked it up at the hotel so we could have used it to visit a museum after our plane landed before our hotel room was ready.

Very good. This will be fleshed out in comments in boxes below. I think it's a shame that you don't do email lists with an opt-out provision. Every tour I've been on has done that, and we have never had a problem. The week in Paris went by so fast that I did not get around to seeking that information, and now I wish I had it.

"After our tour at Versailles, I took the tram and got off at Le Petit Trianon. After touring the house, I went out to the garden in back. It was a beautiful day, the flowers were blooming, it was quiet and just a wonderful experience to walk and sit throughout that garden. I decided to spend the rest of my free time there rather than try to rush out to the Hamlets too. It was a real treat for this retired landscape architect."

Paris is everything imagined and more! We stayed in a lovely hotel in a gorgeous neighborhood. Our guide, Arnaud, is excellent, professional and personable. Our group enjoyed wonderful walks through the different areas of the city, the museums, mastered the metro, enjoyed the city highlights bus tour and loved the Seine River evening cruise. Our meals at local restaurants were excellent; I'm eating a plant based diet and Arnaud made it easy for me to obtain this.

I was skeptical regarding how much I would get out of the tour as I had been to Paris on business many times in the past (at least once per year since 1989). This was my 4th Rick Steves trip, and as always, this trip to Paris was outstanding. Loved our guide, Arno, who was like a teacher and a good friend. Paris was the last place on my bucket list of places to visit, but I've always wanted to go on a Rick Steves tour and it was the only tour that fit in with my school's Spring Break. I'm so glad I went!!! The whole tour experience had me falling in love with Paris and wanting to see more of France. I'm searching out language classes so I can learn French to enjoy my next trip even more. Rolinka, Brad, and Elizabeth guided us through the city and its history with passion and humor. I LOVED IT!

Having Patrick's Metro navigation, language and culture lessons made Paris accessible for our enjoyment. The Rue Cler location of the hotel provided a great base for exploring the city with easy Metro connections to all locations plus interesting local shop and the market. our guide, patrick vidal, helped us to appreciate much of what has made Paris the great city it is via the art, culture, museums, restaurants, and inspiring ambience provided in this tour. Best of Paris in Feb was great! Sure, the weather was cold and occasionally rainy, but every tour member came prepared and weather was no problem. In fact, the weather kept the crowds and pickpockets virtually non-existent. Walking right into museums and restaurants and getting eyeball-to-eyeball with Ms. Mona Lisa was so refreshing. Our tour exceeded our expectations. It was informative, structured but not confining, and encouraged us to try things on our own. Several stops or tours we would not have planned on our own, and the guidance by Patrick took away the intimidation factor of being in a country with a different language. The walks through the neighborhoods gave us such a sense of place and understanding of Paris, and the Metro and free time allowed us to feel like we were living as locals!

"I think the overall WOW moment for me was actually seeing all of the things I had read about- Versailles, Notre Dame, the beautiful architecture. Walking around and seeing all of these things in living and breathing neighborhoods was just breathtaking. The art was unbelievable. My husband and I got married last year and planned a Paris trip for our honeymoon. This winter Paris trip met both our needs. Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Paris: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews and articles, plus find a list of recommended books and movies.

Transportation

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your tour hotel, as well as contact information for your hotel in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

If you plan to travel in Europe before or after your tour, Paris is perfectly located for quick trips around France or to neighboring countries. London is only three hours away by the Chunnel train; Brussels and Bruges are about two hours away; and Amsterdam is a mere four-hour train ride.

Flying within Europe can be reasonable. Ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing On Your Own

If you arrive in Paris before your tour begins, learn the Métro (subway) system and use Rick Steves Paris guidebook for sightseeing ideas and good-value restaurants. If you are in Paris in the off-season, it's a good idea to double-check museum hours and closures with a quick call.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Paris that we do not do as a group: Arc de Triomphe*; Les Invalides*; Jewish Art & History*, Marmottan, and Pompidou* museums; Eiffel Tower; St. Sulpice organ concert; Père-Lachaise cemetery; Paris sewer tour; day trips to Monet's Giverny garden, Chartres, Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau*.  (* Entry is free with the Paris Museum Pass you’ll be given when the tour begins. To save money, you may want to save a couple of these for your free afternoons.)

The Marmottan museum is closed Mondays, and the Jewish Art & History Museum is closed Saturdays; most other museums are closed Tuesdays. Confirm all sightseeing plans with a tourist information office.

This tour does not include a visit to the Eiffel Tower. However it is often a highlight for any traveler and one we highly recommend. Avoid the lines by booking tickets several weeks in advance at: http://ticket.toureiffel.fr. Pre- or post-tour is the best time to visit the tower. If you need to visit the tower during the tour, consider making a reservation for Day 2 or Day 5 after 16:00 or any evening after 22:00.
