Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
 • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
 • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
 • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including visits to a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. We'll end our afternoon at the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages, where after an introduction, you’ll be free to visit the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry and have a rare, up-close look at the artistry of original stained-glass windows from Sainte-Chapelle. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood which was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy a wine tasting and dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. Our walk will end at the Carnavalet Museum, a cavalcade of Parisian history, which you can visit on your own. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face-to-face with the works of Rafael, Delacroix and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

We were very pleased that we got to do so much in Paris with knowledgeable guides yet we were also given time on our own to explore and experience this fantastic city. Julie gave excellent lessons on navigating the subways, train, and buses and then turned us loose. That along with her historical knowledge made this a wonderful trip.

The tour not only provided educational time sequenced history at the sites we visited, but our tour guide Julie's personal skills and knowledge gave us the independence and confidence to tackle the subway and bus system. The time savings provided by your tour alone in getting our arms around French history and culture, along with the new friends we made in our group is something we will forever remember.

I don't know where to start! I loved every minute of our tour, from meeting the group on the first day to sharing a love of learning and adventure throughout our week together. When my husband and I first began researching tours, we got so excited when we read what the Rick Steves' tour had to offer - it was exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a small, intimate group that focused on the history of Paris. It was most enjoyable meeting and getting to know our travel companions.

The tour met our expectations and there were no unwanted surprises. We took our granddaughter (13 years old) for she had told us that she really wanted to see/visit the Eiffel Tower. Our hotel was within walking distance of the tower and we took Rick Steves' advice and arrived two days before the tour and stayed two days after the tour at the same hotel. We arranged for 'no wait in line' tickets for entrance to the tower and experienced all levels at our leisure which thrilled our granddaughter.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I liked many of the "moments" of the tour ... the architecture of the city, the art of the French masters, the Seine River cruise, and the group dynamics ( especially the group's evening dinners at excellent restaurants). Also, I really enjoyed experiencing the food and customs of the French people."

This was our first trip to Europe. I am so happy that we chose a Rick Steve's tour. It was so well organized. If we had traveled on our own we would have wasted too much time waiting in lines, looking for places to eat, etc. The hotel was centrally located, welcoming staff, and comfortable. Our guide William was exceptional! He took personal responsibility for our care and enjoyment. We got lots of exercise and saw many interesting sights that we enjoyed with our fellow tour members.

My friend and I planned this trip for two years. We had always wanted to bite Paris. Our trip was nothing short of perfect. Our hotel was tight in the heart of the little cafes and little shops. Everything was planned do well. I saw all the important sites but still had time to explore and just do what we wanted to do. Great experience. Will not hesitate to do another tour in future

The tour was a fantastic experience and the other members of our group were all easy to get along with and we had a great time. Our guide, Arnaud, was extremely knowledgeable about all things Paris including the many sites, architecture, food and wine.It was a true benefit to be in a Rick Steves tour during the high tourist season because we hardly waited in line for any of the venues as we had pre-arranged appointments with on-site guides who were all experts in their fields.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the Seine river sunset cruise where Arnaud managed to get us the best seats on the boat...wonderful experience seeing the architecture from a different vantage point...not to mention the wonderful sunset...followed by a group of us going to a bistro with a view of the Eiffel Tour lighting up at the top of the hour."

We managed to see and experience many different things while in Paris. Our hotel was very nice with a great staff and perfect location. Our guide was extremely helpful in orienting us, teaching us about the metro/buses and in helping us to understand Parisians and how to interact with them to our advantage (i.e., getting help and good service). In addition to Arnauld our main guide, we had excellent guides at key locations - the Versailles, the Louvre, the Orangerie, and the Montmartre tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many but I really enjoyed the personal tour of Montmartre and getting to see the character and flavor of the neighborhood without the crush of tourists. This was a great value of a trip! From quality accommodations, fantastic tour guides, smooth travel arrangements, NO WAITING for tours and amazing leader...it was fantastic! Our group was just the right size and the "together time" balanced out the freedom to explore on our own. I loved the choice of restaurants and delicious meals and beverages offered all 3 nights too.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many, however my first was when my traveling companion and I arrived via taxi from our apartment of 3 nights in Paris to the HOTEL hours before we needed to meet the group. There was not one thing about the tour that did not meet our expectations. My granddaughter and I appreciated that we were not bused to all the sights by a tour bus. We appreciated using the Metro and the bus system because it made it much easier for us to navigate throughout Paris during our free time and our extended stay. Our tour guide and the local guides were top notch! We derived so much more from the sights we visited because of their expertise and knowledge.

The Paris in 7 Days tour was a perfect way for us to get introduced to Paris. Had we visited Paris on our own, we would have "seen" many of the same attractions, but we would not have "experienced" the, in anything close to the same way that our Rick Steves tour allowed us to do.

Both Elisabeth and Graeme were so knowledgeable. Graeme is going to be a great Guide. Lots of walking but even on the Montmartre day Cerise guided us in a way that didn't leave us breathless at Sacre Coeur. The group meals were fine, but not outstanding. Why are some French restaurants adopting the awful American trait of too much food? Terrific explanations about how to get around on subway and bus. First I must say that Elisabeth is a wonderful lady and great guide. Graeme is learning and he will get there eventually. I applaud you in teaching and empowering us how to use the Metro and bus system in Paris. It allows us to go anywhere we choose. I'm guessing you have a reason but I think that the Tour Eiffel should be included in the tour. As well as the Arc de Triomphe. These landmarks are known around the world and should be highlighted.

This was our first Rick Steves tour and it exceeded our expectations! Having rail/museum passes was a great idea. We used them in our off time. Allowing free time also enabled us to do exciting things on our own, like a preplanned night concert at San Chappelle and a night visit to level 3 of the Eiffel tower Time is critical on vacation-so the preplanned tour was efficient and well worth the cost. As suggested by R/Steves, we arrived several days early & went on a Loire bus tour

Wonderful. We were looking for an Art-History intensive tour as a graduation gift for our daughter, and this tour provided that in spades, plus much more. The tour's coverage of the art, history and culture, and how each influenced the other, made each presentation mean even more. The tour's high level of organization and preparation meant that we could relax and enjoy the tour, without worrying about the logistics or details of planning the trip or navigating an unfamiliar city.

"So many! How could I choose one? The art and architecture in St. Michelle and Notre Dame de Paris were stunning. And they meant so much more due to the background and history we learned about each as we saw them. I'm certain that we enjoyed these far more than the average tourist because of the background history and context we received from our guide."

Our guide Arnaud was excellent; very helpful, delightful, and resourceful. The orientation to Paris and French culture was informative and useful. The staff was very kind, the location was excellent, and the breakfasts were amazing.

Everything was well planned and organized. All of the tour guides were friendly, informative and well qualified to discuss each part of Paris that we visited. The hotel was lovely - clean, nicely decorated, nice size rooms and bathrooms for Paris, friendly and helpful staff. The guided tours in the morning with free time in the afternoon was exactly how we wanted to travel. The tour completely met and exceeded my expectations. Loved it!

"The tour of the palace at Versailles was so informative and interesting because our guide knew so much about the history. Plus the gardens and palace itself are amazing. One of the fountains had just been redone with new gilding and our guide was so overwhelmed at the beauty - made me realize how proud the French are of their history and how lucky we were to see it all."

This tour was fabulous. Arnaud, really focused on providing us with THE BEST of everything, He is so knowledgeable. I feel that Arnaud was focused on providing the most bang for the buck, and he merits a blue ribbon for his efforts. I came home feeling that I had really SEEN Paris, tasted Paris, experienced Paris and fallen quite in love with It. My mistake was in booking 7 Days in London immediately following. That should only be allowed for the young &/or extremely fit!! For real.

I loved that we were on the street walking or riding the Metro/bus. I felt like a Parisian and fell in love with Paris. Our guide, Arneau, was continuously filling our minds with the history, art, nuances, and gossip of Paris. This made the city come alive. He also gave us some tips to help us find wonderful restaurants, cafes, and things to do in our off time. He also provided great tips to keep us safe and free from offending. The people of Paris were lovely, kind, helpful and patient.

Paris was fantastic! The things that made it an extreme positive were the guides and neighborhoods. Our primary guide, Arnaud, was fantastic. His breadth of knowledge and terrific personality made each site come to life. We had three topical guides, one each at Montmartre, the Louvre, and the Orangerie. All were outstanding. Cerise at Montmartre has such passion for her subject. The information she imparted heightened our visit to the Orangerie, along with the excellent guide we had there also.

My husband and I brought our 18 year old granddaughter who had just graduated from high school. We had been to Paris 4 times so we kind of saw it thru her eyes this time. She was thrilled. We had never done a Rick Steves trip before but felt that was the best way for her to see everything rather than leaving it up to us. We were amazed at how well run every part of the tour was. It was a very nice little hotel and the staff extremely helpful. Kristen was absolutely fabulous.

The tour exceeded my expectations. I'm not usually interested in tour groups, but my wife prefers a more structured approach. I took a chance on this tour based on the description and the reviews (both on your site and other sites). I thought it was an excellent hybrid, which allowed us a lot of latitude to explore on our own, while also being guided around the highlights, which we would have hit, anyway. By the way, I'd never heard of Rick Steves prior to signing up for the tour.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We are very happy with the experience. We learned how navigate the city by the metro, and also, by walking power. We have a good idea of the various neighborhoods, and where the main attractions are located. Each day was divided between group activities and free time to explore on your own. The mix of "tour" versus free time well done. Kristen did an outstanding job of explaining customs, locations, ways to get around. Limiting the tour size to 24 is a really good idea. You don't feel quite as much as if you're a member of a cattle herd, and we had a chance to get to know one another. The Louvre, while great, I would have passed on. Too crowded and could not spend time enjoying a particular piece of art. Prefer time spent in smaller museums. L'Orangerie was great.

Our Paris Tour was awesome! It was precisely what we had hoped for. We knew when we signed up for this tour that 7 days would not be sufficient to cover all of the museums, tourists attractions, street markets, cafes and upscale restaurants that we would want to visit. Paris has so many places to visit. Our tour included the highlights plus it gave us time to explore the places that were of special interest to us. I've wanted to go to Paris for at least 30 years. Paris was the reason I finally found my way to Europe, so I had very high expectations. They were met on this tour. Thank you very much for providing such a wonderful service. I do intend to go on another Rick Steves tour.

Unfortunately, I was sick in bed for 3 days of the tour...& feeling poorly the rest...so, that part of the tour experience was crummy. Tour activities were very well thought out, covering Paris highlights. Because of my absence, I did not get to know others well, but it seemed a congenial group. There was a very good balance between group & free time. Hotel staff and Kristen were very helpful arranging for a needed doctor visit.

This is my second Rick Steve's tour. My first was a My-Way tour and I was a little concerned that having a full-time guide would feel to structured and confining. That was not the experience at all. There was a good blend of supervision and on-our-own time. Kristen was not overbearing about that at all. We all had the opportunity to be on our own. I like the size of the RS tours. Logistically easier and the people are likable and adaptable. Great itinerary.

Our 7 day Paris tour was well planned and expertly [INVALID]d. We enjoyed historical information, fun facts and time to browse around on our own. It's a beautiful city and this tour was a delightful way to view Paris in such a short time. I also loved that we had a small group so we could get to know each other and navigate together. The wireless headsets were perfect. This tour was better than I expected!

This tour accomplished exactly what it promised to do. It taught us the skills necessary to become independent travelers in Paris. By the end of the tour we were familiar with most of the major attractions and were confident in our abilities to visit those that weren't included. The blend of group activities and time for solo exploration was just right and allowed all of the tour members to pursue their own interests.

"It's hard to pick a single moment since every day included something fabulous and memorable. However, walking into the first Waterlilies room at the Orangerie was amazing. Being there early in the day before it started to get crowded made it even better because we could take in all of the paintings without people standing in front of them."

Our tour was a great combination of sightseeing and acculturation. Julie did a great job of teaching us how to be independent, from using the Mètro, bus, and rail systems to the subtleties of utilizing Parisian restaurants and cafés. The other tour participants were active and interesting to talk to. The tours by local guides were excellent. We stayed an extra week in Paris and were able to use our new skills effectively. The Whisper Guide system worked very well.

Rebecca provided a wonderful (re)introduction to Paris...in my case my third visit, but first with guides. Icing on a delicious cake. The individual site guides were knowledgable, open to questions and contact with tour members. Hotel location, room, & services - including breakfasts - were all very good. In my case I had a 6th floor room under the mansard roof, with great views of roof tops and the inner courtyard. For me, that was perfect. No negative notes in the experience.

Dinner afterward with new friends. A lifetime experience."

Just the right amount of time devoted to the guided tour and our own free time to explore the city on our own, from the Porte de Vanves flea market, Luxembourg Garden, Rodin Museum and everywhere else our tired feet or the Metro could go. The hotel was very conveniently located for all our self-guided explorations. Arnaud and the rest of the hotel staff were all excellent and made us feel at home. I loved our trip to Paris. Because we took the Metro instead of traveling by tour buses, we were able to see everything in wonderful detail. All our guides, particularly Daniela, were well-informed and gracious. Our hotel was lovely and the staff very helpful and friendly. "My favorite "wow" moment was going to the Orangerie Museum where we were surrounded by Monet's water lilies. "The Orsay museum. While we visited the Louve and Orangerie, the Orsay was much more manageable and a great venue (former train station). I booked this RSE tour to learn about Paris from your experienced tour guide - Rolinka. The experience was fantastic! Though the crowds were large at many of the sites, due to the holiday schedule, both Rolinka and the local guides (Ineke at Versaille; Flavia at Orangerie; Brad in the Marias, and Sylvie at the Louvre) did masterful jobs moving us through each experience - educating and enlightening us on the history, culture, and architecture.

"My "Wow" moment was New Year's Eve. Rolinka opened her home to the entire group and hosted a spectacular New Year's Eve dinner. As a group we then walked to Sacré Coeur to ring in the New Year! The night was not over as we made our way back to the hotel via the Metro which was overwhelmed by crowds who had been celebrating on Champs-Élysées. Working together we were able to work our way through the crowds to an exit and enjoyed a beautiful walk home. A New Year's Eve that I won't soon forget!"

I had never considered joining a travel tour group until listening to Rick speak at a Travel Expo in Washington DC a couple of years ago. I had been familiar with his shows on PBS, and actually only attended the Expo to hear him speak. Rick's passion for travel and philosophy for his tour company led me to sign on for Paris, and I have to say that my expectations were met and exceeded.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would have to say that my 'wow' moment was New Year's Eve. The evening started with Rolinka opening up her home to us for a festive evening spent relaxing with the group. After cooking and feeding us food brought in from neighborhood establishments (you can't get more local than that), Rolinka brought us to the steps of Sacre Coeur. There were no fireworks or confetti, and it wasn't the Champs Elysee, but that's what it made it special."

I thought the Paris trip was very well planned, documented and well executed; Julie showed her mastery of French history, people and knowledge of the city of Paris. Seeing Paris all lit up for Christmas was just magnificent and rivaled displays in my home town of Chicago.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A self-proclaimed mastery of the metro and RER system was my greatest accomplishment or "wow" factor. My wife and I traveled to Chateau Vaux-Le-Vicomte to see the Christmas displays and grounds. The journey from Hotel Londres Eiffel to the Chateau took a stroll to the metro station, three metro lines, a 30 minute ride on the RER and a free coach shuttle bus, but it was well worth it. The city of Paris has created a safe, clean, well designed metro system to get around and enjoy the offerings."

Really enjoyed every part of the tour. The hotel was excellent, both in location and amenities. The tour group was terrific, in size, make-up of participants, and our tour leader, Julie, was outstanding. The choices of sites that we visited was also excellent. This was a very busy seven days made all the more enjoyable by our fantastic guide Julie! Logistics were outstanding; hotel was just great; the hired tour guides were excellent. Our tour guide, Rowinka, while informative was excessively rigid on the schedule; told a lot about her life; was not interested in the lives of the people on the tour and gave them little chance to express themselves. We spent too much time using the Metro when walking about ground would have given us a better feel for the city. The free time was just right; the Rick Steves guide was outstanding

Our first trip to Paris was design to cover all the necessary places and monuments we dreamed and read about. Happily, the first impressions of Paris and our guide, Rolinka, diffidently will last us a lifetime. Thereby, giving us the confidences for future return trips to Paris or other areas of France. We are typical Americans and spoke little French, however found the Parisians to be generous with their patients, warm and inviting to their culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment of many actually came from Rolinka's encouragement to explore Paris. After walking the full-length of the Champs-Elysees during the Christmas market displays, viewing outside holiday shops and many famous store fronts, I walked up the Arc de Triomphe to view Paris in the holiday spirit. Looking over the city, I found the sights and sounds of Paris memorizing; so surreal from where I stood. Paris will always belong to the world and have a special place in my heart."

This was my first time on a tour to Paris but it was my fourth time in the City of Light, and the first time in cold weather. I still learned a lot and I saw a lot less tourists flooding famous landmarks. This tour experience stood out from previous RS tours I've taken because we had a very different kind of guide who had lived locally and was not from the US of A, and helped enthuse me about places that are not in guidebooks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The local guide on the Marais walk stopped at the Hôtel d'Aumont (which is not a hotel you stay in). He talked about its connection to Mansart (the architect) and a juicy story about prior occupants. Even though it is a tribunal administratif building not for open to the public, I liked that we saw the gardens with children's allotments. This is NOT in the RS book and not on the internet: one would not learn about it if you had not gone, so it was special to me."

The trip of a life time is a phrase I keep hearing from friends and family after they see the pictures and the stories. This was the first time out of the country for my husband and me. Passports were waiting for their first stamps. The sights, sounds, food, even the weather were wonderful. I was not sure what to expect, but this was just the best way to start traveling for me. After the first hour with our guide Patrick and the wonderful group on this tour I felt happy with our decision.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking toward the Cluny museum, I was struck with the age of all the history surrounding me. The Cluny houses the tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn, I was unaware of them. The age of the beheaded statues, the civilizations long before what exits now, all very powerful. We made our way up old stairs, quirky hallways, many interesting religious exhibits. The room where the tapestries hang is quiet almost demanding reverance. This moment was the high point for me. Monet was a close second."

Paris is wonderful. Our guide, Patrick, was terrific, talking about Paris, teaching us how to use the metro and always worrying about losing one of us. He was funny and never in a bad mood. He, like all the guides we had at the museums, was enthusiastic about about his job. Can't say enough about him. People on the tour were great. Everyone seemed to have fun everyday, I know my wife and I did. It was too short. I would do it again and recommend this to everyone. Everyone should see Paris.

We took pictures and noticed people buying tickets to go up the Tower. We were on top of the Eiffel Tower 20 minutes later. Well organized, thoughtfully planned. Covered a lot in the allotted time. I liked the balance of planned touring with time on our own. "I don't consider myself to be an art connoisseur and am not particularly drawn to Impressionism, but I was definitely "wowed" by the Monet exhibit at the Orangerie. Loved it. It was a good group of intrepid travelers, but, definitely keep the grumpiness pledge! The planned activities were plentiful and thorough. Free time became more valuable later in the week as my comfort level increased and I felt ready to pursue my particular interests on my own. I am satisfied that I have seen MANY of Paris' highlights, although I'd like another week to further pursue my list. Early Nov. turned out to be fine: less $, fewer tourists, good enough weather.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Stepping forward to behold my first view of Versailles! I also can't stop thinking about Marie Antoinette's thatched village: it caused me to see her less as a historic figure and more as a "bird in a gilded cage"--a young woman, essentially imprisoned by her contrived circumstances, who found a way to feel connected with a more natural life within the strict parameters of her situation, which turned out to be desperate indeed. I also found the Rodin Museum to be a magical place."

This was our second Rick Steves tour so we had a general idea of what to expect and we were not disappointed. From beginning to end, the tour was more than I expected. Thoroughly enjoyed the sights seen on the tour and the free time used to see those not on the tour. Patrick was attentive to the group and explain all to us thoroughly. The tour was well paced with local guides for the Montemarte Tour, The Louvre and The Orangerie. They were very knowledgeable and entertaining too. The three meals provided by Rick Steves were exquisite especially the farewell dinner. Hotel Londres Eiffel great!!

As with our previous Rick Steves tour experience, our tour was very well planned with a nice balance of group activity & independent time. Our guide was personable, enthusiastic & knowledgeable. We loved the location of our hotel & the fact that we got a museum pass & a Metro pass we could use all week. The various guides we had during the tour (in Montmartre, the Louvre, the Orangerie & at Versailles) enhanced our experience & added variety to the tour experience. Tres bon!

The tour provided a wonderful experience. I appreciated the combination of "planned" and "free" time. I have dreamed of visiting Paris all my life. Paris, and the tour, more than exceeded my expectations. The tour hit all the big sites. Our guide, Patrick, was charming, intelligent, patient and genuinely concerned that we enjoy our time in Paris. The additional guides at the Louvre, Versailles, Monmartre, the Orangerie, were all superb. This was my kind of vacation--being in a city brimming with art and culture and learning so much along the way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One of my favorite moments was the guided tour of Monet's paintings at the Orangerie. Our guide truly brought the beautiful works to life for me in a way I hadn't considered them before. My favorite "wow" moment, though, was just being there, just walking the streets of Paris or along the Seine and feeling, if only briefly, that I was experiencing one of, if not the, great capital of Europe. It is a magical city and I was enchanted."

Really enjoyed our 7-day tour of Paris. Elisabeth was great but unfortunately, she was not able to be our guide only a few days because of a severe back injury. However, she was able to find wonderful replacements for her. The hotel was in a great location and the staff were very kind and accomodating. Overall, my expectations were exceeded. It was a crash course in French history, culture and art. I loved it! Just too little time and too much to do in 7 days. Will have to come back!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Although I took many art history courses in art school, Joelle who was our tour guide at the Orangerie was an amazing font of knowledge regarding the life and art of Claude Monet. I learned more in that couple of hours with her than a whole semester of impressionist art history. Another "wow" moment was standing under the Eiffel tower thinking about the remarkable monumental scale and engineering of the structure for the time it was built."

Liked staying in the neighborhood near the Eiffel Tower because of all the interesting small shops and plenty of restaurants. Great area to walk. Appreciated learning to use the Metro and felt comfortable exploring without a guide a few times. All tour guides were very knowledgable, professional, and personable. I have a new appreciation for many Parisian neighborhoods along with French culture and history. The week's itinerary was well designed with time for self exploration.

Wow, where to start? We hit the ground running on this wonderful introduction to Paris, and it seemed like we were exposed to more than 7 days could hold. Loved that we started our first full day on the Metro and continued to use it as a resource throughout; I would probably be too chicken to give it a go on my own, now I feel fully confident I'd use it anytime. With our main guide William we always felt that we had a friend and a mentor in Paris, he's wonderful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Will always remember our guide Joelle at the Orangerie and her discussion on the huge Monet canvases. About a half hour that completely exploded the view of Monet as some doddering old fellow sentimentally painting waterlillies, and instead views him as a vital link from the traditional notions of painting that proceeded him to the abstract expressionist that he influenced. Amazing."

This is the first time I've done a 7-day city tour. Without the in-between-places bus rides of an in country tour it's quite a concentrated experience. But what other way is there to do Paris? It's such a feast of history, art, food, sights, and sounds and you pack in as much as you can bear. As always on your tours our traveling companions were a congenial group, the guide was excellent, the hotel was wonderful and perfectly located, and there were many good nearby places to eat.

We were familiar with comprehensiveness and intensity of the city tours, having done Rome last year. The emphasis on seeing the major sites, learning to navigate the city by public transportation, touring the major neighborhoods, and having sufficient time to tour on our own is the attraction of learning a city in this type of tour. Our guide, Elisabeth, was remarkably good. She offered a wine tasting, paired with foods, which was very expertly done. This was an unexpected treat.

Absolutely positive. We did not have any surprises or "hidden" fees. The materials provided, reflected the experience and the cost exactly. We found that the type of people joining our tour were easy going, polite, friendly and independent. The majority were also very athletic and some had trained to take the tour. My wife Sally and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the experience. We left feeling like we had "Seen Paris". Rebecca did a great job of orienting us to the city. We would be very comfortable returning to Paris in the future and touring it on our own after having received her fantastic tutelage!

"Champagne at the Eiffel Tower the last night was a terrific way to cap a terrific weak. The grounds at Versailles. I have read and heard about them all of my life, I was still unprepared for their scale and magnitude. We had been advised by a friend to rent bikes to tour the grounds. we did, and are very glad. The Rick Steves' guides may want to consider recommending independent bike rental to tour the grounds, in the afternoon after the Palace tour."

The group organization was very good. The tours were not what I expected. I have more experience in Paris than most people so the tours were just OK. Rebecca was very experienced and helpful. Some of the individual tours were more like a race than an informative experience. It was difficult to conform to an undisclosed agenda for each sub-tour. An accurate written summary updated to the time of the tour would be improve the experience. I would say more if I had more characters.

Very interesting and we were blessed with great weather. We all felt (most of our tour members) that there was too much standing in one place looking at artwork instead of the guides walking and talking so we could see more. There is no way any of us could possibly remember all that the guides told us at each piece of art. We all nearly passed out looking at the Monet lily pads for ever. A 5 min walk thru would have been enough! We all loved the neighborhood walking tours as we kept moving.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We all loved the night boat trip on the Seine. It was great seeing the Eiffel Tower lite up at night & sparkling. Nine of us were so disappointed on our final night there that we never got to see what the "surprise" was that our guide had promised us after our farewell dinner. As we all were walking with her the light turned red & 9 of us had to wait to cross. Nobody looked back for us & we had no idea where they went. Our guide should have made sure we were all with her."

Paris was all I expected it to be and even more. I was on the lookout for pickpockets and ready to make eye contact with anyone looking suspicious. I didn't have a problem at all. I felt very safe in Paris. My experience in Paris was such a positive one that I hope to return to take a 14 Day Tour in the near future. My experience was outstanding, Our guide, Marie went way over her duties to please and orientate us. She was terrific. The hotel was very well located and very comfortable. Regarding our tours I suggest that they last a little longer so that we don't have to rush so much through every place we visit. Most of the tour was excellent. I was with two teenagers. We arrived early and sadly two of us ate something bad so we suffered a bit, but that's not your fault. William was an excellent guide and supportive assistant throughout. Our guides for the Louvre and Versailles were excellent, too. The boat ride on the Seine was terrible, though. Crowded, uncomfortable, and uninformative. Ditch it. Add Viator tour of Eiffel Tower (early) and the Catacombs (we did with Aeon Tours).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have to be honest. My two favorite wow moments were NOT with the tour. We signed up for the "Skip the line" Eiffel Tower tour with Viator (Alison was the guide). It was excellent and it made for a very good introduction to Paris since one can see the lay of the land and learn a bit of Paris geography from the top. The other "best moment" was the Catacombs tour we signed up for with Aeon tours. Calloway (the guide) was informative, reverent, and hilarious. The teenagers loved him."

This was my family's fourth trip to Europe and first RS guided tour. I have read the RS books for each prior tour and made extensive use of info in the books, which I found incredibly helpful and fun. This was my 3rd RS tour and I had great expectations given my previous experiences. However this experience was rather flat. I realized that the itinerary left more of the iconic sights out. Everything, and I mean everything, was taken care of. Toni was a GREAT tour guide that kept the tour on track and very interesting. The radio receivers with earplugs were AWESOME. Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your tour hotel, as well as contact information for your hotel in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

If you plan to travel in Europe before or after your tour, Paris is perfectly located for quick trips around France or to neighboring countries. London is only three hours away by the Chunnel train; Brussels and Bruges are about two hours away; and Amsterdam is a mere four-hour train ride.

Flying within Europe can be reasonable. Ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing On Your Own

If you arrive in Paris before your tour begins, learn the Métro (subway) system and use Rick Steves Paris guidebook for sightseeing ideas and good-value restaurants. If you are in Paris in the off-season, it's a good idea to double-check museum hours and closures with a quick call.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Paris that we do not do as a group: Arc de Triomphe*; Les Invalides*; Jewish Art & History*, Marmottan, and Pompidou* museums; Eiffel Tower; St. Sulpice organ concert; Père-Lachaise cemetery; Paris sewer tour; day trips to Monet's Giverny garden, Chartres, Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau*. (* Entry is free with the Paris Museum Pass you’ll be given when the tour begins. To save money, you may want to save a couple of these for your free afternoons.)

The Marmottan museum is closed Mondays, and the Jewish Art & History Museum is closed Saturdays; most other museums are closed Tuesdays. Confirm all sightseeing plans with a tourist information office.

This tour does not include a visit to the Eiffel Tower. However it is often a highlight for any traveler and one we highly recommend. Avoid the lines by booking tickets several weeks in advance at: http://ticket.toureiffel.fr. Pre- or post-tour is the best time to visit the tower. If you need to visit the tower during the tour, consider making a reservation for Day 2 or Day 5 after 16:00 or any evening after 22:00.
