Itinerary

Daily Activity Key

  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Trier for a "Welcome to Germany" meeting. Then we'll take an evening walk through Deutschland's oldest city, and get acquainted over dinner together. Sleep in Trier (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Burg Eltz Castle and Trier

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of the historic Roman and medieval core of Trier, marveling at its Porta Nigra gate, the most impressive Roman fortification in Germany. Then we'll drive along the hill-hugging vineyards and villages of the Mosel River Valley, stopping for lunch together in the über-quaint village of Beilstein. Nearby, we'll stretch our legs with a walk and tour of mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence. We'll return to Trier for a free evening to explore more of this pedestrian-friendly town. Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Baden-Baden Beckons

Our destination today is the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival we'll tour the elaborate casino and take an orientation stroll through the town. You'll have the rest of your day and evening free to "do the spa" (with or without your swimsuit), wander along the shaded riverside promenade, or hike into the surrounding hills. Sleep in Baden-Baden (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, giving some free time to linger in the past and order up a bratwurst or light German snack. Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in clifftop Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views, have dinner together, and sleep (3 nights). Bus: 6 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Hike in the Swiss Alps

The day is all yours. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain walk...or ride the gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and find your way back to Mürren...or take a narrow-gauge railway up the other side of the valley to Kleine Scheidegg, near the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

This morning we'll witness the roaring, thundering, crashing, splashing display of nature's awesome power in Trümmelbach — a series of subterranean waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet into darkness behind the valley's cliffs. You'll have the afternoon free to take a brisk mountain walk, or explore more of the Berner Oberland on your own before we regroup for dinner. Bus: ½ hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairy-tale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens, and oompah-hospitality. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together and sleep in Munich (2 nights). Bus: 7 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town and learn about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and the Luge

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairy-tale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle. We'll hike back down to share a picnic lunch together. Our bus isn't our only ride today — let's barrel down a luge course (weather permitting). Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center, and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 6 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: All Day to Soak Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring an ancient cemetery. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could sneak away to this evening. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty village of Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so upon arrival we'll carry our bags through town and enjoy a boat cruise on the way to our inviting lakeside hotel. Enjoy a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before enjoying tonight's dinner together at our hotel. Sleep in Hallstatt (1 night). Boat: 1 hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to tour the thought-provoking Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna — once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with a neighborhood orientation walk where your guide will discuss your best bets for dinner on your own and a nearby music performance. Sleep in Vienna (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in elegant Vienna with a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and a walking tour of the city's rich Habsburg heritage, including a visit to the art-filled Kunsthistorisches Museum. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by shuttle, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

I absolutely loved this tour. Andrea is the perfect guide. She has a wealth of knowledge about the countries we visited. She is enthusiastic ,engaging and has a quick wit.She taught us about the economy ,politics ,culture and gave us language lessons to help pass the time on the bus. She also bought many treats for our group to share on the bus ride. Each country had its own charm and I loved each one for different reasons . The trip was a good mix of countryside and city visits.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow moments would have to include riding bikes through the English Garden in Munich, listening to a band while drinking beer at the Victualmarket, sitting on balcony in Halstatt and walking the North Face trail in Murren. We also loved visiting cafés in Vienna for kafe and kuchen. Another highlight was visiting the Caracalla spas in Baden Baden and finding the courage to check out the nude spa upstairs. Really it was a ton of fun everyday."

What a whirlwind tour, 13 nights in 7 hotels, with lunch/site stops in-between. First of all we had an Outstanding tour director (Andrea) and Heidebloom driver (Patrick). Starting in Trier gave us the opportunity to arrive early into Frankfurt airport and spend two nights on the Rhine before traveling by train to Trier. Imho the Rhine should be the start point on this tour, then Trier. The tour itself was Outstanding cept a couple of minor hotel dinks below. All local Guides were Uber.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow moments have two: 1) After arriving in Murren during a rainstorm the next morning opening our room curtains to reveal the glorious Jungfrau peak bathing in full sunlight as viewed from our little balcony on the third floor, an audible WOW came from within; and 2) Our balcony view from Haldtstatt (sic) over the lake for sunset complete with local wine and cheese, then again sunrise next morning with kaffe, truly a special place."

The tour was what I expected. Andrea was knowledgable . The bus was comfortable. Hotels were fine, except the hotel in Hallstatt. We had the top corner room and hit our head several times on the beam. There was this beautiful view and we had one window 3X3 on the side. The group dinner was awful and the waiters surely, front desk staff could boat accommodate a request.

This was our SIXTH RS Tour, and it did cover some areas we have previously visited, but we really wanted to get to Munich and all of Austria, so off we went on the GAS tour ! ! ! Hotels were typical, and very good, especially location, location, location. And, we love the to meet new "fellow travelers!" We received what we expected = QUALITY.

Amazing itinerary, excellent guides, warm friendly group, unforgettable experiences . Smart mix of guided sightseeing and free time to be on your own. Bus rides were well organized with stops and beautiful places to explore. Our first RS tour and will definitely do another. The only question is which one?

Favorite "WOW" moment

"If one must be chosen- it would be riding the gondola up to Murren, and hiking in the Swiss Alps. Many more qualify- spa experience in Baden-Baden, the beauty of Halstatt, castles in Bavaria, the Haufbrauhaus in Munich, Demel in Vienna..."

our 3rd RS tour and we expected it to equal the high level of the first two and it did. I had been to Germany and Switzerland before but Austria was new territory. Quite frankly, my travelling heart has always been in Italy and France and the GAS tour didn't raise my heart rate at all but DH wanted to go so off we went and, of course we enjoyed it immensely. Certainly helped that we had great weather, a good and helpful driver and, most importantly, a wonderful guide.

Favorite "WOW" moment

The was my second Rick Steve's tour and I enjoyed the beautiful scenery, country history and culture, fabulous food, and superior local guides. I enjoyed the tour very much and am still pinching myself that I was able to view all of the sites that we saw.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many. Arriving at Murren and staying at the Jungfrau Hotel was great. The views from our room were breath taking. One afternoon we watch a local wedding. All the quest were in there local costumes. Watching the Bride And Groom being lead by a processing of men ringing Huge cowbells. The Views from the Shilthorn and Murren itself were wonderful. The historical significance of all the Cities we visited, Trier, Baden Baden, Munich, and etc. All were at one time Roman Outposts."

This was our first tour and it was fun, well organized and provided a good mix of group and individual exploration. I think we were able to do much more than if we traveled alone because our guide provided insight to cultural differences and similarities. We never felt like we were unprepared for any of the fun experiences we had. Our guide Daniela was wonderful about providing a variety of experiences and was great at finding various activities should the weather turn bad.

The tour group members all seemed to get along very well with one another. Our tour guide was very informative and always willing to help out when we had questions or wanted recommendations. The sites we saw on the tour were amazing. Many are indescribable. I would highly recommend his trip to anyone wanting an introduction to Germany, Switzerland, or Austria without having to do all he legwork.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There was a group of six of us that went for a hike close to Murren, Switzerland. We hiked through cow pastures, open fields of wildflowers (where we made our own Sound of Music experience), across streams, waterfalls, and rocks. We also hiked in hail and rain. Although, at the time, it seemed less than pleasurable, looking back on it, it was my WOW moment. Thank you to our tour guide for her recommendation!"

This was our third Steves tour and it lived up to expectations. The start of the tour provided us with a good physical workout. Lots of climbing, walking and the like. Trier provided us with historical perspective of the region. The Alps provided us with beautiful vistas and wonderful hiking. Enjoyed our trip through the Black Forest (and the cake!). Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna provided valuable cultural experiences-all great! Hallstatt was relaxing and beautiful (right out of a painting).

I have loved every Rick tour I have been on, but the GAS tour takes the prize for straight up awesome scenery. The serene Mosel, interesting castles, stunning Alps, beautiful lakeside Hallstatt, picturesque and vibrant cities such as Munich, Salzburg and Vienna...pretty hard to beat. Guides Fabian and Nica enriched the experience with plentiful historical and cultural insights, not to mention abundant good humor. Finally the other group members were warm, engaging and fun. I'll be back!

I was impressed with all aspects of the tour. I was impressed with the organization of everyday and how this organization led to each day being as good or better than advertised. The tour guide, Fabian, was the reason our tour was better than I expected. Although this is the first tour I have taken, and I really didn't know what to expect from the guide, Fabian set a high mark. His knowledge, friendliness, concern and guidance in foreign places surpassed my expectations,

Fabian and Nicole were fantastic. They are both knowledgeable, fun to be around, and are take great pride in their work and enjoy what they do. Throughout the tour, Fabian always swooped in at just the right time with little surprises that really added to the trip. Also, his cultural and historical insight were invaluable in helping us get the most out of the experience. I'd definitely do another tour with Fabian.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We had perfect weather in Muren Switzerland, and on one of our free days Fabian took the time to lead a group of us up to the Schilthorn then take us on a hike all afternoon. It was fantastic. He spent the entire day with us on his day off. I couldn't believe how much fun Fabian was having on a 2 week trip with a bunch of fat and ignorant Americans. He was having as much fun as the rest of us, and that helped me enjoy my time much more."

This was our third RS tour, and we just loved it. It was different from the other two (Best of Italy and Paris and Northern France) in that it wasn't as church and museum centered. Our guide, Fabian, is a PhD in history, so the history talks were amazing and informative. I was especially wary of these countries because of the Nazi history. I was so appreciative of the candor with which all our guides handled this. Scenery was amazing!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The experience of being in Murren in the Swiss Alps simply can't be beat. Every time you turn around you are in a post card, and have to pinch yourself that it is real. We loved this tour! There was not a moment wasted - and I feel we experienced the very best this region has to offer. Each place we visited, each hotel and each restaurant, were carefully screened, our tour guide was excellent, and there was something for everyone - whether you were a history buff, an art lover, a foodie, a beer seeker, a hiker, or a music lover. It was only two weeks, but it was life changing. The people on the tour were wonderful - not a single problem or complaint.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was most impressed with Murren. The gondola ride up to the hotel, and the second gondola ride another 5000 feet to the top were amazing. The views of the Swiss Alps were breathtaking, and we were lucky enough to have some interesting fog and haze - that changed to stunning, clear views before we left. From the music performance at dinner, to the waterfalls and hiking - Murren was my favorite."

This was our first trip to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria and we all had a wonderful time. We visited Europe last year with another tour company and the Rick Steve's tour was much more enjoyable. Our tour guide Hans and driver Geoff were the best. Combining the excellent tour guide with the format of the Rick Steve's Tour, this will not be our last tour with Rick Steve's. Our hotels were great, better quality than we had expected. Their locations in town were convenient to walking to most sites that we wished to visit. Our tour guide, Tara was excellent. It was great. The tour was very organized and well planned. Our guides were exceptional in every city. Our guide Andrea was fun and very helpful with suggesting restaurants and things to do. The people we met on the trip were so much fun. We are all keeping in touch with e-mails. I would definitely take another Rick Steves tour again.

when I graduate from college I lived 1.5 months in Paris and one of my memories was the tourists coming to the Eiffel tower by the tons, buses filled with people stepping down for 30 minutes, taking pictures like crazy and packing back into the bus. This was my first trip to Europe and the first time on a group tour. I was very impressed with the level of detail from the entire Rick Steves Tour group, from the pre-tour instructions to our final dinner together. There was a good ratio of group time and individual time to explore your own interests and there was a good mix of big city sites and quaint, small town excursions. Fabian was absolutely fabulous in his guide duties. With his PHD in history from Stanford he was able to add terrific insight into the details of the places we visited and add vibrant backgrounds of the historic people that were in charge at the time. It was a great lesson in history. He has excellent speaking abilities and a pleasant personality as well. All of the hotels were very pleasant and well decorated. The meals exceeded my expectations and the bus was very clean and in top shape.

The Alps in Murren are certainly high on the list as was the open air museum in the Black Forest. The Neuschwanstein castle was impressive and the town of Hallstatt was absolutely beautiful. The guide (Fabian Rueger) made this trip for me. Fabian's historical insights were concise, easy to understand and downright entertaining! Fabian was always ready to answer any individual questions about hotels, the best restaurants to visit on our free time, as well as shopping opportunities. Fabian's handling of our bus driver's cycling accident kept the tour on track -- we didn't miss a beat. Fabian was quick to credit the Rick Steves corporate team for their help in obtaining a backup.

"The best wow moment for me was the tour of the Mauthausen Concentration camp. Fabian explained how Hitler came to power, the role of the Brownshirts, the SS, and the Gestapo. I now have a much better understanding of that period in German history. Seamless travel! Excited to see what the day would bring, every morning! The combination of well-orchestrated group activities and free time to roam was so appreciated; the contrast between big cities and world class museums, and small communities with special features was wonderful. Visiting Mauthausen and then experiencing Vienna with all its gold and dark glory was a valuable part of the trip, as were all the music and history lessons. Great conversations with locals and fellow tourists.

It was the icing on the cake! Or was meeting the cellist on the plaza in Vienna, asking him if he'd play a waltz for the couple in our group who dreamed to waltz on the streets? He said yes & waltz they did!"

This was my 3rd Rick Steves' Tour. It was great. Personally, I reached the point of tour overload when we hit Vienna (last stop). In Vienna, I really enjoyed the local guide, city walking tour, and final group dinner, but I was too burned out to do much else with my free time. Another Great Adventure. Meeting new people . . . immersed in new cultures . . . tasting good food and drink . . . standing in the shadows of history. There was a wide variety of locations and experiences. The accomodations were good. Tour guide excellent. Extra activities were added that were not listed on original itinerary that added to the trip. People were given lots of useful information (not too much) and great options for how to spend their time

This was our 5th Rick Steves tour and it didn't disappoint. But, it was the only one where we had been to all three of the countries before so they weren't completely new to us. As always, our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the places we went and gave very clear instructions to people that allowed them to explore on their own during free time. The weather could have been better but that is something that can't be controlled by the tour operator.

We loved every minute of our tour. We were totally taken care of. We had never been to Europe before and appreciated all the orientations we had to every city, explanations of the transit systems, restaurant suggestions and suggestions for things to do during our free time. Our guide went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience and even led some optional excursions during our free time.

"One of our guide's optional excursions in Switzerland. We had the most magical day! Hiking in the valley, Trummelbach Falls, taking the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and then the cable car to Mannlichen. A wonderful lunch surrounded by the gorgeous mountains on the most beautiful clear day. We hiked from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidigg and ended our day getting back to Murren via the trains and lifts. A very full AMAZING day. Thank you Pat!!!!"

Very fun that our guide had "surprises" for us: Black Forest cake, a boat cruise on the lake at Hallstatt, the flea circus in Munchen, a concert in Murren! Many, many wows. A very good group to tour with, made several new friends and the tour was a good blend of organized events and free time to do your own thing. This is my second rick steves trip, the first was Italy. As before the trip was very well organized and all activities and locations were great. There were a couple of days when we spent a lot of time on the bus, and wonder if some re-orgainzation of that would be possible. Fine guide, really good group of people, well-organized, good hotels, fine bus driver, poor weather. Pleasant trip, but not what I'd call outstanding. Our tour began in Trier, Germany, which I didn't feel was a city of any special note. I would urge you to start elsewhere and, if that saved a day, spend the additional time in Vienna, where there was lots we didn't get to do. Murren, Switzerland, Hallstat, Austria (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and Munich were all excellent stops.

This was our third RS's tour and perhaps our least favorite - in large part due to the chilly rain that plagued us 12 of the 14 days of our tour (although it didn't deter us from sight seeing). My overall tour experience this time was okay. Was it the weather (rain nearly every day except the day prior to the tour or the day the tour ended), were 3 countries too much to cram into 14 days, or was the GAS trip so different from the small villages of Italy, that I came home feeling very differently this time. Also, when I compare tour guides, I left this trip underwhelmed. The tour group was wonderful, most of the accommodations good or above, and most of the restaurants good.

This was a wonderful trip............... and I speak from experience since this is my 14th Rick Steves tour. I felt I experienced a true taste of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the locations I visited. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment? Let me count the ways. The day that truly stands out is the day of our hike through the Alps. I kept telling myself: Am I really seeing this? The scenery was breathtaking, from the edelweiss in patches here and there, to the cows walking steadily on the mountains, to the clouds over the far mountains. How I wish I could experience it again!!"

We had a great time. The group was fantastic - everyone really got along well and all made an effort to dine and mingle with all the other members. Germany was my favorite part of the trip with the lush countryside and just the way everything is orderly and on time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have to say overall I liked Germany the most. However that being said, a "wow" moment for me probably was the hike we took along the base of the swiss alps near Murren, with the sun shining and the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks trying to peak out from the lingering high clouds. Along the walk we kept hearing a chorus of cow bells from all the roaming dairy cows. It was lush and green and just magical."

Another terrific Rick Steve's tour! I really like the format of some time with the group and some time on your own. I particularly loved our time in the Black Forest and Bavaria.

"My favorite "wow" moment was hiking in the Swiss Alps. I am from Colorado so am used to mountain scenery but this was something else. We did one beautiful sunny day as a group and the next day my husband and I hiked to a waterfall above Murren in the mist and fog and both experiences were fabulous. Absolutely wonderful! It was hard to say goodbye to such fun people. We laughed a lot!!! My husband and I have never traveled on a tour before, so were not sure what to expect. Our group got along very well and everyone was always on time. I felt everyone talked and mingled well. We enjoyed eating meals or hanging out with different people. Traveling on the bus was way more enjoyable then I expected. I appreciated all the local information we got and interesting stops along the way.

"Gosh, there were a lot of "wow" moments. But, I must say hiking in Switzerland. It was fun getting everywhere with gondolas, funiculars and cogwheel trains and of course walking. Loved the beautiful views, waterfalls and watching base jumpers. Two local young jumpers actually walked with some of us for a while explaining how and where they all jumped. And...I can now relate to cows with bells on hillsides in Switzerland. Castles were really cool also!"

This was my first Rick Steves' tour, and I can definitely say it will not be my last. The guides were wonderful and very knowledgeable. I thought the bus rides between the cities might be good times to catch up on some sleep, but the scenery, and in particular the stories told by our guides were very interesting and informative. I also really enjoyed the walks around the cities with our guides, and the local guides -- understanding the story really enriches the experience.

It was a wonderful two weeks. Our guides were very personable and knowledgeable. We visited a wide variety of sites and I enjoyed the mix between large cities and smaller towns and villages. We usually had our city tours in the mornings and had the afternoons free to explore on our own, so by the time we were set free we had a working knowledge of the city and ideas of what we wanted to do. I also have to tip my hat to my fellow travelers who were a terrific group to be with for two weeks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Don't really have one. We saw and did so many interesting things that it would be impossible for me to pick one. I enjoyed seeing the castles and palaces to see how the other half lived but I also enjoyed the Black Forest Folk Museum to see how many of the people in that area lived. I loved the city tours, checking out the architecture and the museums, but I also loved the hikes in Switzerland."

This was our first Rick Steves tour. We did a lot of reading and clothes shopping before the trip and found all Rick Steves' tips were right on. I was very pleased with the overall tour experience. Our tour guide was exceptional. He liked to surprise us with extra nice coffee stops and we also had a surprise boat cruise at Halstatt. He was great at suggesting options particularly at Murren. The bus was clean and our driver was friendly and competent. I liked the hotels and the fact that they were close to the action. I liked the walks around each new area we visited. The local guides were so helpful and full of suggestions.

A tour is like a chain. Only as strong as its weakest link(s). On our arrival at our last stop (Vienna) we had to walk over 1/2 mile from where the bus dropped us off (transporting our luggage) to the hotel. A discussion with the guide indicated that it was the first time R/S had used the hotel. The bus driver did not even drive by the hotel to see if parking was available (it was). This was terrible planning by R/S. The menu for the last night "farewell" diner was duck. AWFUL.

Being our third Rick Steves Tour we had an idea of what it would be like in regards to pace and activities, so we were a little surprised to find ourselves thinking, " Oh, yes. Breakfast is early and we are checking out really early." A good thing when you realize how much you do cover in a day. Best thing about the tour is that the traveling, and organizing of hotels and half the dinners are done for you. We travel quite a bit independently taking months to organize hotels and transportation.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Taking two days to explore the alps independently as we had been on the three week tour five years ago. Weather was great so we hiked the Schnige Platte walk recommended by RS and the second day opened our wallets to go up the JUNGFRAU.....Expensive. Yes. Worth the money. Yes. Had an incredible day including a walk to Monck Hut fifty minutes one way in the snow, in sunshine with snow covered mountains surrounding us. Mauthausen was memorable for me (Dachau last time). Guide was incredible."

In retrospect our trip seems almost surreal. 14 days of blue skies, 80 degree weather was perfect and certainly not expected. We absolutely loved every destination point and our guide, Andrea Wolf, always gave colorful narratives of each place we visited. This was our second Rick Steves tour (the first was to Croatia, Bosnia) Our group was small, only 20, but composed of intelligent, kind, and congenial folks. We all loved our tour guide, Andrea. She was very knowledgeable about our 3 countries, very thoughtful, and very enthusiastic. Her background well suited her for this job. We loved the choices of places to visit and to stay. The small towns such as Murren and the lake area such as Hallstadtt were exceptional in charm and beauty.

Everyday the weather was warm, sunny to partly cloudy, with only a 10 minute sprinkle. No one gets credit for that, but it significantly enhanced the experience. Our driver was not only most attractive, but pleasant, and the most cautious and careful driver I have ever encountered on a tour. The places we visited were all outstanding.

A very good trip that covered much territory but felt very well paced. As with our prior RS trip, the guide was excellent, and the amount of time spent in each city or town was good. Favorite "WOW" moment

I had a great time on this tour. It was just the right amount of activity and free time. We saw a variety of things from churches to museums, hiking in the Alps and through multiple locations from the "Sound of Music" and a concentration camp. The hotels were all centrally located and easy to access restaurants and local attractions. We were fortunate to have a small group which made the group dinners cozy and helps to make the service better.

We weren't sure if we were going to get the ride because of the weather, but at the last minute things cleared up and we were racing down the hill. We were first time Rick Steves tour groupies with huge expectations due to the financial commitment and the reputation of Rick. We are frequent EU travelers on our own (with the help of Rick's books) From the first moment we met at intro's until we hugged our goodbye's at the last dinner together we had an extraordinary experience. BUT! the really WOW moment was when four of us went for it and did the Roman bath - an experience that will never be forgotten."

It was a very unique experience, one I shall never forget. The company was great and Hans had a very good grasp of history from a European perspective. I finally can hear and understand the difference between baroque, classical, romantic music.

"I would say that our visit to Hallstatt was my favorite wow moment.....then again I could have spent more time in Trier......Murren really stood out. I guess I have more than one wow"

Great tour. Our group was homogenous which made for a great time. Everyone seemed to look out for one another and I don't think anyone felt left out. We lucked out with really good weather (a little hot) and no rain except a sprinkle in Murren. Switzerland was the highlight of the tour. Again we were lucky and the clouds parted just in time for us to travel to Schilthorn. AMAZING! It was hard to leave.

"I loved arriving in Hallstatt and immediately boarding a boat for a tour of one section of the lake. Then we saw the hotel where we were to stay. It was fabulous!! And from the broad deck behind our room was the lake view and room enough to host our tour group to a happy hour that evening."

I had a great time, from meeting new people to seeing new things to eating things I had never eaten before. I enjoyed all of it, once I got over jet-lag, which only took 2 days.

"There were some great "wow" moments, from pizza with my mom on our first night in Trier to swimming in Baden-Baden to listening to opera in Salzburg to laughing with other people on the tour to walking/hiking in the alps. There wasn't one thing that was clearly on the top, I enjoyed it all!"

Hans was a terrific guide because his knowledge of the culture a d especially The various genres of Classical music made Vienna, Munich, and Salzburg Come alive for us. Albert the coach driver fit in very well too. Both guys Were cheerful and had complete control of the trip. Our fellow travelers Were very amiable too. I'd suggest that more time be made available in Halstatt by shaving time Off time at either Baden Baden or Trier.

We did the 17 day Italy last year, and were just knocked over by how great it was. The sights and cities that this tour did were not near as interesting as last year, that is why I gave it a good. If we had not done Italy last year, would probably give it an outstanding.

"Murren was the best stop on the trip. Actually, our best stop was the 2 days we spent in Bacharach prior to joining the tour."

This is my second Rick Steves tour, and it is a wonderful way to travel. I love the way the tours are organized; there was a good mix of structured time vs. "wandering" time, history vs. scenery, cities vs. countryside (although I would always prefer more time in the countryside).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was opening the window of our hotel room our first morning in Murren and looking out at the glacier-covered Swiss Alps. It was raining when we arrived, so we didn't realize what was just outside our window until the clear morning light. It was truly awesome. And I took way too many pictures of that same scene each morning. :-) A close runner-up was walking into our hotel room in Halstatt and seeing that it included a huge terrace on the lake. Sunrise the following morning was breathtaking!"

I loved our guide and bus driver. Both truly love what they do. I especially loved Switzerland and Austria. I loved the history provided by our guide and her attention to detail on every adventure. She prepared us with information before each stop and I felt very comfortable in everything we experienced. We had a tour guide for every new city and then had time to explore on our own. She always provided landmarks to know where were were. It was a wonderful balance of city and country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The alps! It began with a cable ride to our hotel and then to the top of Schilthorn for beautiful views and topped off with hiking, Trummelbach, a series of waterfalls inside the mountain, then a walk through the valley to Lauterbrunnen Valley, and several beautiful hikes."

I thought the tour was very well organized. The Guide was fantastic! I liked the format of learning something in the morning (city tours) and having the afternoons to explore. I would definitely recommend the tour books before the tour as it would help a lot with picking free time activities. The instructions on where to be and when were very clear. The bus was clean and comfortable and the driver was fun to get to know at group dinners.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Halstadt! It was beautiful and relaxing. Could have easily stayed there another day. Also loved the hotel in Murren and the trip to the building at the top of the mountain. The James Bond exhibit was a very lucky for me added bonus."

The tour met or exceeded our expectations in every regard; the ion of places to visit was perfect, the amount of time in each location gave us a chance to really explore, the pacing of the days and the occasional free time kept the trip from feeling rushed, our guide and his assistant did not feel like "tour guides", but simply people we'd very much enjoy traveling with, who happened to have a thorough knowledge of the places we went and their history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our walk in the alpine meadows above Mürren was amazing! The hillsides were dotted with beautiful Swiss houses, the hills covered in dozens of varieties of wildflowers, and grazing brown cows with bells completed the scene . Even the weather, which was overcast and somewhat foggy enhanced the walk by adding a softness day. To top it off, we had a fantastic lunch at a small rural restaurant along trail; delicious sandwich with homemade cheese, fresh milk, and fresh-made Rösti."

This tour by far has been the most amazing out of the 3 tours we have taken with Rick Steves. Hans kept us entertained with surprising historical facts and good humor during the coach rides. We made frequent stops, had plenty of rest room availability (can't forget those self cleaning toilets!), and nourishing food. Hans and Martin went the extra mile and provided so much for everyone on the tour. Both were very professional.

A 1st trip to Europe for my husband and myself.....no better experience could we have hoped for We kept coming back to each other saying, "This was absolutely the best way to do Europe for the 1st time. No waiting around for tickets, no logistics nightmares, no unknown hotel surprises, no wasted time, no transportation issues, and an expert, well-trained professional guide." If we spoke these words once, we spoke them a half dozen times.....

This was my 3rd Rick Steves tour and it was fantastic!! Our group members were varied and interesting and our tour leader was great!! I learned a lot about Germany, Austria and Switzerland -- and, in the process, I learned more about myself and others -- and about life, in general. After this trip, I came home to work and home life, but was facesd with a family health emergency almost right away. Travel can prepare you for anything -- it really helped me this year, that's for sure.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was halfway through the trip when I took off on my own and decided to hike atop the Mönchsberg (cliff) above Saltzburg [INVALID] I stopped for lunch (after some backtracking) at the Gasthaus Stadtalm cafe. It was sunny, the light was extra-special, I'd ordered the most delicious asparagus risotto (in German, no lesss!!), and the people at all the tables were friendly, having a good time, and enjoying the day [INVALID] as I was eating, I thought, "Oh, wow, this is my "wow" moment. This is perfection.""

Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Trier before your tour begins, use your Rick Steves' Germany guidebook to get oriented, try out a few words of German, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise (consider renting a bike and pedaling along the river; details in your guidebook or from any tourist office).

Here are some suggestions for sightseeing in Trier that we will not be doing as a group (see your guidebook for details): Archaeological Museum; Mosel boat cruise; Bishop's Museum, Amphitheater. Remember, we will tour nearby Burg Eltz Castle as a group.

Transportation

Most tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. We recommend talking to your travel agent about "open jaw" airline tickets (flying into and out of different cities).

Frankfurt International Airport (Frankfurt am Main) is the main airport in Germany — 110 miles from Trier. If you fly into Frankfurt am Main, you will then need to take a train from the airport to Trier, a 3-4 hour journey. Frankfurt Hahn airport is a smaller airport located just 40 miles from Trier, but it is only serviced by low-cost airlines, including RyanAir and Wizz Air. It takes an hour to go by bus from this airport to Trier. See www.flibco.com/hahn/morbach.htm for more information.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass. You can get a rough idea of costs from the above guide or from Rick Steves' Germany guidebook.

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as contact information for your first and last hotels in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425/608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Packing

While it is important to pack light, there are a few items we'd like you to consider including when packing for this tour. There are great opportunities to hike during our stays in Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland (weather permitting). While hiking boots are not necessary, we recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction. In addition, the tour also visits Baden-Baden, an area known for its hot springs, and swimsuits are optional at some of the baths so you may wish to pack a swimsuit and perhaps a lightweight microfiber towel.

For ideas on what to pack, check Rick's Packing List and our Women's Packing List.
