Itinerary

Daily Activity Key

  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Trier for a "Welcome to Germany" meeting. Then we'll take an evening walk through Deutschland's oldest city, and get acquainted over dinner together. Sleep in Trier (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Burg Eltz Castle and Trier

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of the historic Roman and medieval core of Trier, marveling at its Porta Nigra gate, the most impressive Roman fortification in Germany. Then we'll drive along the hill-hugging vineyards and villages of the Mosel Valley, stopping for lunch together in the über-quaint village of Beilstein. Nearby, we'll stretch our legs with a walk and tour of mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence. We'll return to Trier for a free evening to explore more of this pedestrian-friendly town. Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Baden-Baden Beckons

Our destination today is the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival we'll tour the elaborate casino and take an orientation stroll through the town. You'll have the rest of your day and evening free to "do the spa" (with or without your swimsuit), wander along the shaded riverside promenade, or hike into the surrounding hills. Sleep in Baden-Baden (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, giving some free time to linger in the past and order up a bratwurst or light German snack. Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in cliff-top Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views, have dinner together and sleep (3 nights). Bus: 6 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Hike in the Swiss Alps

The day is all yours. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain walk...or ride the gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and find your way back to Mürren...or take a narrow-gauge railway up the other side of the valley to Kleine Scheidegg, near the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

This morning we'll witness the roaring, thundering, crashing, splashing display of nature's awesome power in Trümmelbach — a series of subterranean waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet into darkness behind the valley's cliffs. You'll have the afternoon free to take a brisk mountain walk, or explore more of the Berner Oberland on your own before we regroup for dinner. Bus: ½ hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairytale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens and oompah-hospitality. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together and sleep in Munich (2 nights). Bus: 7 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town and learn about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairytale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle. We'll hike back down to share a picnic lunch together before leaving Germany behind. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center, and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: All Day to Soak-Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring an ancient cemetery. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could sneak away to this evening. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty village of Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so upon arrival we'll enjoy a boat cruise (weather permitting) on the way to our inviting lakeside hotel. Spend a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before tonight's dinner together at our hotel. Sleep in Hallstatt (1 night). Boat: 1 hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to tour the thought-provoking Mauthausen concentration camp, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933-1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna — once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with a neighborhood orientation walk, where your guide will discuss your best bets for dinner on your own. Sleep in Vienna (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in elegant Vienna with a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and walking tour of the city's rich Habsburg heritage including a visit to the art-filled Kunsthistorisches Museum. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by shuttle, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

We had a great experience mostly due to our terrific tour guide and the small number of people in our travel group. We have been on other tours and had about 45 people...way too many. We had 27 and that worked out great for spreading out on the coach during those long travel days. All our hotels were great, they had no AC and the temps. got up to 100 a couple of days. Rolinka was wonderful at passing out cards for us to sign for travelers' birthdays or anniversaries.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking in Hallstatt one evening and watching the lightning from an approaching thunderstorm illuminate the Alps. Seeing the scenery of the Swiss countryside as we hiked on the North Face trail. Seeing the Alps for the first time as they came into view was special also."

This was a GREAT 14-day vacation! The itinerary is why I signed up for this tour. Our guide, Rolinka, who is a gem - made the tour Outstanding. Her attention to the details and going the extra mile to help give us the best experience did not go unappreciated - even when she became injured. From arranging group discount lift tickets in the Alps, to a fantastic Mozart dinner concert in Munich, to giving each of us photos as souvenirs at our final dinner. She goes the extra mile!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hiking in the Alps and the time in Hallstatt. We even got to spend the morning in Hallstatt so we wouldn't arrive in Vienna in the mid afternoon extreme heat. Of course the amazing weather enhanced the "WOW"!"

My very first tour experience was amazing! I am sure that my family would not have been able to see and do as much as we did on the German, Austria, and Switzerland Tour in two weeks. The tour was a perfect balance between learning from experienced and knowledgeable tour guides to learning how to travel on our own!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "Wow!" moment was when it took two gondola rides to get to our hotel and better yet, when I opened my windows to an incredible view-the majestic Swiss Alps in Murren!"

The overall tour experience was even better than we had projected. It's very difficult to put into words the enjoyment and thrills each day provided our group. Having never traveled to Europe, it was reassuring to have a wonderful guide along with a courteous and professional bus driver getting us to our various destinations safely and timely. The tour was packed with majestic sightseeing opportunities along with enough down time to relax and do our own adventuring.

This was our first trip to Europe and we didn't know what to expect. The guides were amazing, with their knowledge about the places we went to and their connections in history. They also did a fantastic job with all of the room and meal arrangements. When we asked they offered suggestions on local food and wines. The pacing on the trip was good, long days, followed by days with a little time off. We did everything that was offered, including some optional hikes and events. It was fantastic.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Murren, Switzerland! There was so much to see and do there, surrounded by the breath-taking Alps. Breakfast at the top of the Schilthorn. Hiking on the beautiful trails. The wild flowers. Getting so close to the Eiger. Sitting on the deck outside our hotel room and being surrounded by such peace and beauty. This was by far the best stop on the tour and the hardest one to leave. There were many other amazing views and experiences on the tour, but this one touched deeply into my soul."

This was our first Rick Steves Tour, and I'm not sure how it could have been better (except for the heat wave that struck in the middle of it). Maisie and Martin were superb - friendly, knowledgeable, and terrific conversationalists. The two of them made a great team, making sure we all knew some great options for our free time, interfacing with the local experts seamlessly and gathering us together for spontaneous (or so they seemed) small activities that add up to great memories.

This was a great tour and exactly as I had wished. Just enough hand holding, lot of exposure to history and beauty and yet no overdoing, where the entire group moves together, giving me the independence to do what I want to do. The places visited were not always the ones you hear about in a conventional sense and yet rich in beauty and history making the experience exquisite. It allowed having a sense of mixing with nature, culture, tradition, habits, food and every aspect of the place.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had quite a few. My biggest one was Murren and the Swiss Alps. Murren is a beautiful little village with greenery all around, one that we viewed as we took the gondola up and down. The scene of the crisp snow covered Alps at a distance was like a dream come true. My second favorite destination was Austria (all of it), loved every bit of nature, art , architecture , music and history."

This tour had a perfect pace and incredible variety. I enjoyed the the smaller towns like Trier, Murren, and Hallstatt especially when compared to bustling cities like Munich and Vienna. The variety for the activities was impressive as well. We stayed in great hotels and enjoyed fantastic food at every stop on and off the itinerary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the scenery and peacefulness of the Alps in Switzerland. You have a spectacular view in every direction that at times seems more like a backdrop than actual landscape. We enjoyed every stop on the itinerary from the quaint villages to larger cities. The hotels were centrally located with spacious rooms. We had used Rick Steves tour books extensively on previous trips and now can recommend Rick Steves tours.

The tour was fabulous due to the wonderful places we visited, our great tour guides, Maisie and Martin, and the upbeat, positive group of people with whom we traveled. If it had been a bit cooler, everything would have been perfect.

I have taken a few European tours with other companies, but the format of this one has been my favorite by far. It's clear to see where your money is going and the value that you're getting. I loved the smaller size of the tour group, the central location of the hotels and the knowledge of the guide. Everything was well planned and ever detail considered. What an excellent experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

We saw a great deal. It was also quite exhausting. We learned this is not a style of travel we wish to repeat. We were with our group too much and did not have much time for personal experiences. We learned a lot about travel in Europe from our guides for which we are thankful. However we also visited during a heat wave. With no air conditioning in the hotels, we felt as though we did not get the rest needed to keep up the demanding schedule. It would have been good to tweak the schedule.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite moment was our last night in Switzerland. We were treated to local musicians playing the mountain horn and accordion. We were sitting outside. The evening was cool and comfortable. I can't think of a better way to tour Europe! As a first timer, I felt well prepared via the Rick Steves books/accessories. I loved the variety of activities and sites, which varied from quaint and historic cities/museums to beautiful and peaceful walks through the Alps. Great balance of group time and alone time for exploring. Maise was "amaising"! She was organized, informed and helped get us all to places before the crowds. Sandra was sweet and helped us with German pronunciation.

"My "wow" moment was the view from the gondola on the ride up to our hotel in Murren, Switzerland. I loved walking on the winding paths, hearing the cow bells and church bells and seeing such a wonderful variety of beautiful flowers in front of a backdrop of rugged mountains. Having excellent beer, food and chocolate helped cap this most excellent trip! Can't wait to book another tour!!!"

Enjoyed the tour very much. The places we visited were interesting, particularly offering much natural beauty. Our tour group was very nice, generally laid back folks who were pleasant to be with. Our guide Maisie was fantastic! The background information she provided about the places we were going to was without fail informative and prepared us well for each stage of the visit.

"Too many! I thought Murren was the best place in the world. The clouds lifted and we got photos of Jungfrau. Then I didn't want to leave Munich. In Salzburg we did as much Mozart as possible. I have to return to Hallstatt. The history and prehistory of the place fascinate me. I'm glad we went to the concentration camp even though I wasn't looking forward to it. When we drove away I knew that I will never forget it. In Vienna we saw stallions being taken from the stables and put onto trailers."

Cities [INVALID]ed for our tour gave a great representation of the countries. Our tour leader and driver where very knowledgeable and gave many little known facts about the areas we visited. "There were so many times we went "Wow" I think sitting on our balcony in Murren, Switzerland and looking at the breathtaking mountain peaks had to be an unbelievable experience. It was my birthday the day before the end of our tour. I thought nobody knew about it except me husband, who was sworn to silence. "Climbing up to the wonderful Gothic church in Hallstatt with its late medieval Marian altarpiece-- unheralded, but extraordinary. As much as I've been a Steves disciple, I was hesitant about an "organized" tour, but my wife wanted the experience. I am so glad she insisted. The tour made the travel convenient and allowed us to focus more on what we were seeing/learning. My only serious complaint is that I did not have enough time at Mathausen. I was unable to complete the audio tour in the allotted time. Like Mr Steves, I also believe in the importance of 1st person exposure to this awful history.

One "A plus plus guide", 23 lively tour group members, one stylishly skilled bus driver and 3 wonderful countries combined with great food, beer and wine, good conversation, exhilarating spas and rides and lots of singing and dancing, made for one of the most enjoyable and memorable Rick Steves' trips that I have been on.

This was our third RS tour and we are likely to sign up for more in the future as this tour met our expectations for quality and variety of experiences planned, skill and personality of the main guide, local guides and driver, and for efficiency in terms of how the tours are run. My second Rick Steves tour, and one person in our group was on their 10th!! I like the approach, itineraries, activity level, food, tour director, and driver. The pacing is good, and there isn't too much time on a bus in any one day. There is enough free time to focus on some things that I really liked. I walked 121 miles and climbed 544 flights of stairs. Loved every one of them.

I really liked Murren, the trip to the high Alps, the walks in the valley, and the cable car trips up and down in Switzerland. We had a run of good weather with great clouds so it was stunning. The overall tour experience was excellent. All the information provided on the website related to this tour was exceedingly accurate. There were no surprises related to length of travel on the bus, amount and type of walking, hotels, meals, and the travel itinerary. This tour was an excellent overview of scenery, historic cities, food, culture and somber reflection of historical tragedy. Everything went smoothly with excellent coordination, bus time was filled with activities, the weather cooperated and then some, our fellow travelers were engaging and interested with no stragglers or complainers, and longer bus rides were broken up with interesting activities. This was our first Rick Steves Tour and we loved it.Of course there is nothing you can do about the weather but our guide, Hans did such a great job giving us alternatives when the weather did not cooperate. He really went over and above the call of duty. Our third RS tour was great fun and an excellent intro to the Germanic lands of Europe. The group gelled quickly (much thanks to our guide, Hans)and proved adaptable to the unseasonably cool weather. Right mix of group vs time on our own. I want to emphasize the term "intro", because our time in Salzburg & Munich didn't leave us w/ adequate time to pursue much on our own. Here's an idea - give more time to those 2 cities & create a separate mini tour of Switzerland!

We had a wonder group of folks to travel with and a guide willing to make last minute adjustments due to rain and snow. The mountains above Murren were completely socked in with fog making the gondola trip up not worth the cost--so we didn't. Instead, Hans took us on a hike in the valley. Other than the first 2 or 3 k feet, the Swiss Alps are the "Alleged Alps" to us. I personally think that Disney has bought the Alps and that they were closed for refurbishing, and therefore fogged in.

Rolinka started us off well with her friendly, organized leadership style. She helped the group get to know each other in comfortable ways. The experiences we had in each place and with the people were awesome! I enjoyed all of the on-the-way stops on the bus, along with the rich experiences in the cities and smaller towns. The vistas in Mussen, Switzerland and Hallstatt, Austria were spectacular.,I am still feeling the "awe" of the trip.

"I had lots of "wow" experiences,. Traveling on the gondola to the top of Schilthorn and seeing the view of the Alps from that spot was the best for me. I have great pictures to keep the memory alive. The view was all around us in Mussen, as we hiked, ate at an outdoor lunch place, or took a short train ride. Also, the view from my room was extraordinary, too."

Second tour of this trip - interesting how much more cohesive this group was. Strong leadership was a real plus! Time in Munich seemed too much - would have enjoyed more time in Salzburg. "The Lauterbrunnen Valley, seeing the snowy peaks from our window in Murren, was the most satisfying, and had a Wow power; so did the alpenhorn playing. Thank you again Rick Steves for another amazing experience. Our guides Rolinka and Carlos were amazing, fun, informative, organized, caring and entertaining. Our intinerary was fulfilled and on schedule everyday. I met wonderful people in our group and wonderful people in all the countries we visited. Rolinka was an outstanding teacher and guide and greatly enhanced our experience. The group was fun and the hotels were all very very good. The time in Murren and Hallstatt was special for the scenery. Countryside in GAS was beautiful. The local guides were great and it would be hard to pick one over the other for quality of information. The local cuisine is meat and potatoes and I don't know how the locals survive to old age on those diets but we had some interesting and tasty food.

I did the Paris and the heart of France tour earlier this year and this tour was every bit as good as that one. We were blessed with great weather except for one day. Andrea was a fabulous guide because she takes the time to look out for, listen, and laugh with our group. The tour was well worth the money. We visited 8 cities and were always on the go it seems. Loved the smaller cities especially. the meals, guides. Other tour members were great besides the weather was perfecto. Had a greater knowledge of WWII and European history. We returned home happy but exhausted.

"Muren in the evening was especially a "WOW" moment. We arrived there in the evening with cloudy weather. And we woke up in the morning to warm sunshine with the picturesque all around us. That night Rolinka had a surprise for us.: a native Alps horn player and another playing the accordion. It was warm the sun was setting and the cows came down from the mountain with their bells. It does not get any better than that!"

We saw and did a lot. Switzerland and Hallstatt were my favorite part of the tour. Activities were well planned and interesting. Speaking for myself I thought the tour was too regimented and intense compared with the the other tours we have taken in France and Italy. Sometimes more like work than a vacation especially up and on the road by 8a.m.!

The tour provided me to see portions of Europe that if left to my own devices to explore would not have happened. The pace of the tour was perfect. Our group was diverse in age and background but cohesive as a whole. One of best things about the tour was the friends I made with my tour 'buddies.' Overall, the tour was a wonderful experience and the best trip I've taken.

Truly the best vacation I have ever taken! The entire tour was very well organized and Rolinka and Maisie were outstanding! Meeting 26 new friends from across the US and traveling with them was one of the best bonuses of the entire experience. I will travel with Rick Steves' Europe again!

"Baden Baden surprised me. I really felt it would just be a so so experience. But as we approached Baden Baden on the bus, Rolinka gave one of her typical fantastic verbal preps for the experience. The tour was lovely & picturesque. Well balanced and well paced. Nice bus & nice driver. Your guide book & our tour guide prepared me well for each place visited. Felt most peaceful in Murren area, until I reached Hallstatt. Both areas were incredibly interesting & beautiful. The drives were easy & broken up well. Could have skipped Trier for maybe (?) Bacharach. Found Munich distasteful with the crazy drunken Oktoberfest crowds overwhelming the beautiful city. Liked the flea circus though.

I am responding along with my spouse Susan Gillis (travel partner). This was our first Rick Steve's tour and although we spoke with others who previously toured with you, this exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed an experienced guide. Most of the accommodations, the food, areas traveled on the tour were well planned. Everyday worries about traveling on our own were non-existent. We were free to experience each country's culture without the struggles of daily logistics.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many. We wanted more time to experience the "WOW" each time we stayed in a new city! If we were to chose one experience, it would be Murren. Three nights living in the beauty of the Swiss Alps, hiking and seeing the beauty everywhere around us. It didn't hurt that is was 70 degree weather....thank you for planning that too."

I thoroughly enjoyed our first Rick Steve's tour. I felt our group was well prepared and open to all aspects of the tour. I felt that the descriptions of what to expect were very accurate and helped us anticipate what was expected of us. We arrived late in Trier as our train from Berlin was delayed due to construction on some track. The result was that we missed the opening get acquainted session Andrea had at the hotel. We were able to connect with your office regarding our delay.

"My favorite WOW is really hard to limit to just one, so I will give you a few. 1) The Luge – I love speed and this was beyond my wildest expectations. 2) Hiking the Alps in Murrin, with a beautiful sunshine sky, and temperatures in the 70's, this is tough to beat. God's gift to us mortals. 3) Baden-Baden and the wonderful baths. 4) Salzburg and everything Mozart. 5) Hallstatt – a touch of paradise. 6) The Black Forest Torte – AMAZING!"

We loved Andrea's enthusiasm and willingness to go "over and above" to make all parts of our trip run well. There were many times when she would say what she planned to do in free time if we wanted to do it with her and would also give plenty of alternative options as well. The pace was good and we could choose to slow it down by opting out of some city tours or other activities or " pump it up" if wished to do more or see alternative sites. Loved our group too.

Everything clicked for this experience: the weather, the group, and the guide. Being in the Alps with unbelievable sunshine (shirt-sleeve weather) wasn't expected, and yet we had it. Andrea was a fount of information and was personable and helpful. Despite one day of bad weather, she adjusted the experience to include the luge rides, even though we were at another location by that point. This adjustment to keep us 'whole' would not have been executed with another tour company.

The GAS tour was a great itinerary and well [INVALID]d by our guide, Andrea! There were many AWEsome moments - I just couldn't stop taking pictures. How does Rick Steves arrange that perfect weather for Switzerland? It was beyond gorgeous. This was our first Rick Steve's tour experience and we were very pleased overall. It was so nice to have no worries getting around Europe where we did not know the language. I loved our tour group and our guide Nika and assistant guide Kevin. The overall experience was good but my biggest complaint is the way the rooms are assigned. My wife and I were initially hesitant to do a "group" tour. We feared we would be walking around wearing headsets, following a guide who was holding a brightly colored stick high in the air, and basically looking like typical tourists. It was one of the best I have done so far. The only bothersome thing was getting the train to Trier. This was our 7th tour, and it was amazing how fast we all clicked. Great group. "Not the usual WOW moment, but on our free day in Murren my husband and I decided to just hike up in the hills. We went to the mountain and panoramic views. Mountain hiking was not new to us, coming from the Pacific NW. But when we decided to sit down and rest, it was on a bench with 15 heifers and their melodic cow bells near by. There we were, all the mountain views, our cows serenading us and no one in sight for most of a half hour. It was grand. A real Heidi experience."

I thought the tour was wonderful! Tara and our bus driver Francois were a true team and were just delightful! Just about all the places we went were bucket list items for me and will be remembered for years! The people on this trip were wonderful too and I feel I've made some great friends. I'd love to see all of them again on another tour.

It was a really great tour. I really appreciated the add-ons: walking tours, dinners, small treats, extra hikes and walks Tara took us on. Baden-Baden was kind of a nothing - maybe find another place to substitute for this. It seemed like a lost day too early in the trip. It was important to see Mauthausen, but it was not as meaningful as Dachau.

This tour was our first trip to Europe and our first experience on an organized tour. I felt that it was very well thought out and organized. I liked the mix of organized and free time and that 'extra' guidance that we needed to feel comfortable when we were on our own. Although I am glad we saw everything we did, the packing/unpacking was tiring. The bus and hotel accommodations were at least (if not more than) what I expected. The itinerary more than met my expectations.

I also thoroughly enjoy the guided tours that were included in the tour and the Third Reich tour that was extra was well worth it. A terrific trip. We had a very harmonious good humored interesting group who respected the basic amenities of timeliness and congeniality. Andrea as the lead did a great job in setting the stage and fostering a relaxed friendly air. The tour itself had many wow moments and many simple pleasurable moments; like a cold Bitburger in Trier or sharing the great Rieslings along the Mosel. Overall there was a good mix of history, and fantasy with a healthy dose of outdoor activity.

What a fantastic trip! Every place we visited was worthwhile. I have been interested in Rick Steves tours since I first used one of his guidebooks (very small and with hand-drawn maps) in 1988, but we have always preferred to travel independently. This tour was amazing it exceeded my expectations for my very first tour. I highly recommend people who ask to take it. The countries, people, and food are amazing and you learn a lot about the history and their cultures!! The guides are all very knowledgeable, personable and very interesting to listen to.. The group my daughter and I travelled with was great, we met a lot of nice and interesting people!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My WOW factor was the scenery and all the villages, seeing and learning their cultures, how they are kept up, you did not see any littering any where, you could walk the streets at night feeling very comfortable and not worry about getting mugged. I could not believe all castles that are there. Absolutely gorgeous!! Going to Schilthorn, I faced a lot of height fears on this trip the scenery took my breath way!! Walking the Northface trail in Murren with a group of us was Beautiful!!!"

The mix of guided tours and free time was well balanced. The guide books helped us choose what to do in our free time. Our tour leader Niko was excellent, and the local guides were good. We had a number of rainy days and did tours in them, which I might have wanted to shorten or skip, but it turned out ok.

The tour is a wonderful combination of smaller cities, larger cities and restful places to enjoy the outdoors. It provides a glimpse into the diverse makeup of each country. This was our very first Europe and Rick Steves tour, and we are pleased to say that it far exceeded our expectations. From the clear communications prior to the trip, to the vast amount of information on destinations and opportunities, to the many local trip guides, the locations, the group, and last but not least, to our fabulous tour guide, Nika! In all aspects, we enjoyed this trip immensely. There was just the right amount of group activities and free time to explore the destinations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many enjoyable moments, and to [INVALID] just one, is a difficult task. However, for me, the biggest "wow" moment was during the cable car ride from the bottom of the Lauterbrunnen valley to our hotel in Murren, Switzerland. The scenery simply took my breath away!"

This was our first Europe trip. We are extremely satisfied with the tour and would take another Rick Steves tour when we travel. Every aspect from the initial registration to the actual tour was very well organized with the added benefit of personal customer service. The information made available through the guide books and other material was very helpful. There was a very good balance of tour time vs. free time. Our guide Nika was outstanding.

"Mine was during the stay at Murren during an optional "North Face" hike led by tour guide Nicole "Nica" Johnson with 9 other tour members and our bus driver Andres. The trip was well organized. Our tour guy Donald was well informed, knowledgeable, helpful and fun to have as our guide. The other individual city guides were outstanding, very pleasant and informative. The cities and sites we saw were more then we expected and we most likely would not have thought to see if we planned our own individual trip. The bus driver was fun also and was interesting. He liked be part of our group. All the members of our tour were wonderful and made our trip complete.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was my first time to Europe and I loved it! By taking a tour I was able to learn about the places we visited and see things I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I really enjoying traveling with a group and getting to know all the great people. Experiencing new things with these new friends was one of the things I really liked about the tour! My first tour with Rick Steves was quite enjoyable?? I enjoyed getting to know my fellow tour group during our walks , Rides on various transportation and at our group meals. Our tour guide, Donald, made this tour very interesting . I liked that the hotels were in great locations within each city And that they were smaller hotels providing excellent service to each of us. The city guides were quite knowledgable so that added to the tour experience .

Nights just added an element of "awe" for me and most of us on this tour! The town was delightful and the scenery breathtaking! It was so much fun hiking on the various trails among cows and all the beauty Of the alps! The hike to the cheese factory was an added delight, recommend it to future tourists!"

This was our first Rick Steve's tour. My husband and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and took this tour on a suggestion from a friend. We loved every part of the experience and would NEVER have been able to experience all that we had seen had we been touring on our own. The tour is true to what we would expect from Rick Steve's; not touristy, but yet seeing all the best areas on and off the beaten path with the preparation done for us.

My first organized tour of any kind was a huge success, and I'll be back for another RS tour. Being part of a tour enabled me to visit sites that I probably would not have gone to otherwise, primarily the small towns, castles, and out-of-the-way places. It's wonderful to meet people from all over the USA and be part of a small group that loves new adventures.

Our group was a mix of people of all ages, all parts of the US, many professions and jobs, and varied physical conditions but we all came to enjoy and love each other. Donald ,our guide always informed us of places of interest and good places to eat. The history in this part of the world is never ending and around every corner. Castles were everywhere, of all sizes and made think of how many man hour had to go into their construction with how many lives lost?

I can only say that everything stated in your sales promotions are true. I am very happy with my experiences on this tour. Our guide Donald was efficient, warm-hearted and caring. He remembered details of personal requests or small worries. The tour pace, the interesting stops made even the longer days on bus very enjoyable. The hotels and meals together went beyond my expectations: I could sleep well nightly on comfortable beds and get a taste of national dishes.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Perhaps the gondola ride up from Murren to Piz Gloria, perhaps the Trummelbach Falls, or the swans on the Danube (Donau). The cities and buildings were fascinating but nature suits me best. One event in Murren, listening to the alpine horns and Swiss music on deck of Jungfrau Hotel in that amazing setting: had to pinch myself to realize I was really there, and then I had to dance with others!"

Overall, we had a wonderful experience. Last year we did the VFR- Italy tour and there were some notable differences. Donald did a wonderful job in keeping a very diverse group together. Well Done Donald! Our speciality guides were very good with one exception and that was our guide at the Mauthausen Work Camp. This was not the regular guide according to Donald. Excellent tour! This was our first visit to the European continent and I would highly recommend to anyone that a Rick Steve's tour is a fantastic way to get introduced to European travel. While this tour was very well organized, our tour guide also constantly educated us as to how to be better travelers on our own in Europe. Everything on the tour ran like clockwork, and we got to see so many sites and learn so much about each of our stops because of how well planned everything was.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Swiss Alps were breathtaking to view and hike for two days (make sure to bring hiking shoes), but I enjoyed Trier the most because it was both the start of our tour and the oldest civilization we visited. However, the real "wow" factor for me was the tremendous education we received about each of the places we visited. While you expect a Rick Steves trip to be educational, the educational value of this trip far exceeded anything I could have imagined."

My wife and I are younger and were not sure what we were signing up for. However, to our surprise it was a great experience for us. We've been to Europe many times including these countries (Germ, Switz, Aust). This tour was by far the best. With only 25 people in the group, we all got to know one another. We had our own time, but also had fun dining and hanging with the group. Also-preferred the smaller, more quaint towns (such as Hallstatt, Austria), and the out of the way stops (Trummelbach Falls in Switz)vs larger cities such as Vienna.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Trummelbach Falls in Switzerland-the subterranean water falls. I'd never seen or heard anything like this! Talk about thundering waterfalls twisting, turning, churning inside and all the way down a mountain-a sight (and sound) to behold. Our expectations were exceeded at every step of this trip. We were fortunate to have a smaller group (15) of delightful co-travellers. Trier was a wonderful surprise in many ways - most of all, its rich history. We got up our courage and did the full 17 step Fredricksbad program and loved it. The Berner Oberland was the most spectacular outdoor experience of our lives. Munich, Salzburg and Vienna were all so different - and great!

We had not done a tour before, although we had planned and used Rick Steve's books to plan our own European travel. We didn't have time to plan on our own so we decided to book a tour. We were not disappointed! We loved our tour guide Donald, and the group size was small. ( 17 people) We had time on our own and group time. This was a nice balance. Having a room with a view was the icing on the cake. Or course, we couldn't have asked for better weather, as we had bright blue skies every day we were there. This was my first Rick Steves' tour so I did not know what to expect. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed it. It was better than I could have ever imagined. I would love to be able to do other trips (I just don't know where to go next). Since returning, I have told everyone that asks what a great experience it was. This has definitely given me memories that will last a lifetime.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Paragliding in Hallstatt - we tried to go paragliding in Murren, but the weather kept us from going. When we got to Hallstatt, we saw people in the air, and with Andrea's help, we were able to find a company to take us. It is something that I will never forget. Also, we had no idea that it was even available in Murren until Andrea mentioned it. Without her, we never would have gotten the chance to go."

Great stops, great tour guide and assistant, great food, great group of people. Did not care for the beds in many of the hotels.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Murren and Holstatt. Weather was bad in Murren, so the wow would have been much larger if we could have seen the mountain tops."

I loved this tour! I loved where we went, our tour guide was awesome, and the other people on our tour were friendly and fun to be with.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to pick one "wow" moment. I absolutely loved Hallstat. Maybe it was because I'd never heard of it before this tour, but it was like visiting a postcard. It was beautiful, picturesque, charming, and fun."

This was our first tour (and first trip to Europe). I was a little nervous about the new experience. Upon our arrival in Trier, we were greeted by Hans, and a little later that afternoon, we met the rest of the group. They were all absolutely wonderful! And, Aaron also! Every aspect of the trip was wonderful. Hans and Aaron are to be commended for their excellent abilities to keep us happy travelers! Would have liked to have more time in Halstadt.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Murren it was rainy the whole time. One morning, Hans offered a walk to Gimmelwald, and decided to go. It was so much fun. A when we returned, we took the lift up the mountain. We ended up seeing a hillside full of sheep and having a soggy, muddy hike back down. It was this time of our lives!"

We had a wonderful experience. The trip itself was amazing ... Germany, Switzerland and Austria. But Hans made it so much more fun. He was amazingly insightful ... not just places to visit or restaurant to eat in, but he told wonderful stories that really captured the essence of being in Europe and gave us all kinds of insights into German history, Austrian culture, etc. Really made it an extraordinary experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Taking the boat ride around the lake and pulling up to Hallstat. We had never heard of Hallstat and weren't sure what to expect. But we pulled up to this cute little town and it was breathtaking. Then we went up the venicular to the salt mine and were able to look back down on the lake and the valley ... that too was a "wow" moment."

This was a "bucket list" family trip for us, something we'd dreamed about and planned for years. Thanks to the well laid out plans of our Rick Steve's tour and the insights from our wonderful guide Holgar, we visited places we'd never have discovered on our own and had experiences that created memories that will last a lifetime.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Honestly, this is a difficult question because there are so many to choose from. My personal "wow" moment was seeing Mürren, Switzerland for the first time. I feel very blessed to have had a chance to visit this village and hike around the alps with my wife and kids. Even better, we had a chance to drink the best hot chocolate ever at Walter's, a tiny pub that was actually closed when we arrived...until our guide knocked on the door and they welcomed us inside!"

This was a "someday" vacation for my wife Susan and me. we had always talked about "someday" visiting these countries especially Germany since we are both of German descent. Several years earlier we visited Portugal and Spain on a cruise. That trip was good but paled in comparison to our Rick Steve's tour. Our expectaions were greatly exceeded

This is our 3rd RSTour and they all have been exceptional. This tour enjoyed the combination of excellent tour guides, friendly bus driver, like-minded travelers, and a varied itinerary that also allowed enough time for personal adventures, created a recipe for an outstanding travel experience. We were especially lucky in having excellent weather. (It was even clear the morning we went to Piz Gloria.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many to count! Enjoying the baths and walking in Baden Baden. A gloriously balmy day atop Piz Gloria in the Alps. A mountain hike amongst the cows with their clanging cow bells and finding a zip line along the way. An exhilarating luge ride down an Austrian mountain. A serene boat ride before disembarking in Hallstatt. A Mozart dinner concert in the fortress above Salzburg. The disturbing but educational tour of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. The BMW museum outside Munich. Etc. Etc. Etc."

The tour visited lots of different places and had a variety of different experiences - hiking and luging in the mountains, sightseeing in the cities and learning about history in the smaller places. Perhaps it covered too much. We ended up traveling to Berlin and taking a boat trip down part of the Danube and regretted that we didn't see Rothenburg. Not as many "a-ha" moments as on other Rick Steves trips. Missed the picnics!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the open air farm in Germany. The guide was wonderful and I learned many interesting things - how to make linen, the work days of farm men and women, how wheat is milled, etc. It was a unique place."

Our tour was outstanding. Fabian was an amazing historical guide who made the history come alive. Because we knew 10 of the tour members I think it was even more fun for Dave and I. We got to know many of the other travelers and hope to keep in touch with everyone.

My wife and I have taken several Rick Steve's Tours and this one as great as all of the others. Fabian was an outstanding tour guide. His grasp of the political history of the area was very educational.

Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Transportation

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as contact information for your first and last hotels in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. Most tour members will arrange to fly into either Frankfurt or Luxembourg and out of Vienna (“multi-city” on flight booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay.

Frankfurt International Airport (Frankfurt am Main) is the main airport in Germany — 110 miles from Trier. If you fly into Frankfurt am Main, you will need to take a train from the airport to Trier Hauptbahnhof, a 3-4 hour journey. Frankfurt Hahn airport is a smaller airport located just 40 miles from Trier, but it is only serviced by low-cost airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz Air. It takes an hour to go by bus from this airport to Trier. See www.flibco.com/hahn/morbach.htm for more information.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing On Your Own

If you arrive in Trier before your tour begins, use your Rick Steves Germany guidebook to get oriented, try out a few words of German, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise (consider renting a bike and pedaling along the river; details in your guidebook or from any tourist office).

Here are some suggestions for sightseeing in Trier that we will not be doing as a group (see your guidebook for details): Archaeological Museum; Mosel boat cruise; Bishop's Museum, Amphitheater. Remember, we will tour nearby Burg Eltz Castle as a group.

Packing

While it is important to pack light, there are a few items we'd like you to consider including when packing for this tour. There are great opportunities to hike during our stays in Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland (weather permitting). While hiking boots are not necessary, we recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction. In addition, the tour also visits Baden-Baden, an area known for its hot springs, and swimsuits are optional at some of the baths so you may wish to pack a swimsuit and perhaps a lightweight microfiber towel.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick’s packing tips.
