Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Sicily
We'll gather at our hotel in Palermo at 3 p.m. for a welcome meeting. Then we'll begin our Sicilian adventure by joining a contessa for a personal tour of her family's home, the Palazzo Federico. We'll end our evening getting to know one another at a "Welcome to Sicily" dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Palermo.
Day 2: Palermo and Monreale
We'll meet our local guide and take a walking tour of Palermo and its colorful, bustling Ballaró street market — all spiced with an evocative whiff of Africa. Then we'll greet our driver and hop aboard our coach bound for the hill-topping town of Monreale — renowned for its Arab-flavored cathedral that blends Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, Gothic, and Norman traditions, heritage, and art. We'll tour the cathedral's interior of glittering, golden mosaics as well as the story-telling columns of the cloister. After lunch, we'll return to Palermo, where you'll be free to explore more of this exciting, energetic city and discover a tucked-away trattoria for dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Palermo.
Day 3: Ancient Segesta and Mountaintop Erice
This morning we'll head toward the island's western coast, stopping at the ancient Greek site of Segesta to meander through its magnificent Doric temple and hilltop theater. Then we'll continue to the enchanting medieval mountaintop town of Erice. Believed by Romans to be the home of Venus, Erice eventually evolved into a center for Christian convents and home to heavenly pastries (which we'll learn about and taste). This afternoon we'll enjoy a tasty lunch that includes the region's specialties — sun-dried tomatoes, Castelvetrano olives, and Marsala wine — before making our way to today's final destination: seaside Trapani, where we'll take an orientation walk and set you free for the evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Trapani.
Day 4: Salt Harvesting and Seaside Trapani
Today we'll drive down to the Trapani salt pans — a coastal wetland and nature reserve where sea salt has been harvested for nearly 3,000 years. We'll tour the Phoenician island of Mozia and learn about this bygone civilization. Then our guide will teach us the history and process of salt harvesting as we tour the area by boat. You'll be free to spend the rest of your day exploring the seaside town of Trapani. Find that perfect terrace, savor your favorite aperitivo, and watch the sun slowly dip into the sea.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Trapani.
Day 5: Ancient Agrigento and Country Living
This morning we'll take a magical history tour through the ruins of Agrigento, one of the richest of the Greek colonies and a thriving democracy 2,500 years ago. We'll focus on Agrigento's Valley of the Temples — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself — and tour its archeological museum. This afternoon we'll head to our tranquil countryside hotel. You'll have time to soak in the view before tonight's dinner together.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep near Agrigento.
Day 6: Roman Mosaics and Syracuse
Sicily was also colonized by the Romans, which we'll learn about at today's first destination, the Villa Romana del Casale. Here we'll spend much of our morning surrounded by the world's richest and most colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic. On the road again, we'll stop to visit a working farm and meet its owner, followed by a midday feast. Then it's on to Syracuse. This evening we'll take a walk through the city's historic old town on the island of Ortygia.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.
Day 7: Syracuse, Past and Present
This morning we'll learn more about Ortygia and take a closer look at this small fishing island. We'll explore the local market, stroll through centuries in the Cathedral of Syracuse, and marvel at the masterpiece of the Piazza del Duomo. This afternoon we'll enjoy a lively performance of Sicily's traditional puppet theater, where the language is no barrier to entertainment. Then the rest of the day is yours to wander through Syracuse's delightful jumble of Greek, Roman, medieval, and Baroque layers — or settle on a quiet park bench with a harbor view.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep on the island of Ortygia.
Day 8: Mount Etna, Wine, and Taormina
We'll begin our day with a short drive up the coast to Catania, where we'll take in breathtaking views of Mount Etna while learning more about the volcano with a spirited presentation by one of the University of Catania's volcanologists. Next, we'll visit a winery on the slopes of the mountain, where we'll enjoy a tour through the vineyards and taste some of Sicily's deservedly famous wine before heading to Taormina. After we check into our hotel, we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk. This evening, join in the local passeggiata to feel the pulse of Sicilian culture, then find the ideal people-watching spot to enjoy your gelato and dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Taormina.
Day 9: Seductive Taormina
This morning we'll tour Taormina's remarkably situated ancient Greek theater, which is still used today for open-air performances. This afternoon you're free to luxuriate in this cliffhanging, Old World resort town. Wander through its elegant gardens, posh cafés, and shops; ride a cable car down to the beach; or explore the nearby mountain top village of Castelmola. Any way you slice it, you'll have a ringside seat to savor il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing), Sicilian style. This evening we'll meet up for a Sicilian pizza dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Taormina.
Day 10: Colorful Catania
This morning we're off to Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, where we'll tour the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco). We'll learn how nearly a year before D-Day, Allied troops found themselves fighting against — and at the same time liberating — their Italian adversaries. After a brief neighborhood orientation, you're free to wander through Catania's famous fish market, admire the Baroque architecture of the grand Piazza del Duomo, or enjoy people-watching in one of the city's many cafés. We'll gather together tonight to say arrivederci, share travel memories, enjoy the freshest Sicilian food, and toast to new friends. Salute!
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Catania.
Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Catania's airport by taxi or shuttle bus. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Grazie e ciao!

Etna come to life, seeing the amazing architecture from all over the world located on this island, enjoying the magnificent hospitality and of course, the cuisine. My souvenir to my friends and family is the menu of recipes I I brought back and will be preparing for a Sicilian dinner party. "

Having a love of travel and this tour being our first experience of being part of a tour group, our guide, Nancy, was OUTSTANDING! Nancy's ability to lead a diverse group of travelers was amazing. Her knowledge, skills, and abilities made the travel experience so much fun. We learned so much more than we normally learn when we travel on our own. Nancy's ability to give you the "right" amount of information to keep your attention without overwhelming you was "spot on".

"The "wow" moment for me was when I could not remember what day it was because we were having so much fun. Having worked for 45+ years, I have lived by my calendar. I truly felt like I was on vacation when I stopped worrying about what day it was and let Nancy tell us about what experience was next."

I liked that we didn't have a full packed schedule. Each day, there were free times, when I could either rest, recuperate, or explore on my own. The itinerary was diverse, included some cultural, educational and fun stuff. The buddy checking system was efficient, and gave me an opportunity to connect to someone. For me, the tour guides were all very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, and sometimes their too much in detail teaching bored me.

Our Rick Steves guide, Virginia, made this tour more incredible than it was already destined to be considering our fabulous itinerary of historic sites, cultural experiences and great Sicilian food. A native of Italy who now lives in the Seattle area, Virginia obviously loves her job at the Rick Steves organization. You can tell that she really cares about each and every tour member. She was always checking to make sure we were doing well. She even had surprise treats and gifts for us all along.

I love the way that the Rick Steve's tours are organized. You have great learning experiences, both historic like the museums and fun like the cooking school. You also have time to do whatever you would like to do, from exploring the back alleyways to having a drink on a beautiful terrace and just relaxing. I think Rick's motto of no grumps and the idea you need to haul your own luggage, draws people who are motivated to learn about another culture while having fun in a group.

The Sicily tour had so many interesting and inspiring things to see and do. Ancient Greek and Roman temples and villas, cute hill towns, beautiful beaches and coastline, and the people were very friendly and kind. I was very disappointed in the filth, garbage and overall neglect of both Palermo and Catania. Our guide Ruth said that the Sicilian people are more focused on living the sweet life, ignoring general cleanliness and public health. Our first Steves tour was 17 days in Italy, fantast

"I experienced a "WOW" every single day! It's so hard to pin down one of those moments. I guess the most memorable part of the tour was the times our group had arranged "picnics" on several of our outings. Sicily is interesting, and yes, gritty. Our tour guide and group were great, I would change a few things in the itinerary/timing, personally. For example, one of my anticipated highlights were the Roman mosaics. Yet, for this site, we had no guide. Audio guides would have been really useful. And in Catania, 2 hours allotted to the Allied landing museum was just too much - there was nothing else out there, a lot of sitting around in the heat.

It combined getting a taste of the local food with bonding of our tour mates followed by a stroll through a lovely hilltop village. Well planned and managed by our guide Andrea Vannelli. We have had other friends who have visited Sicily not on a RS tour and their experience was underwhelming where ours was not that. Outstanding example of what a travel tour should be. I have not gravitated towards guided tours in past since I am an avid cruiser (mainly because I enjoy seeing new places in one trip). I must admit the Best of Sicily Tour did not disappoint in that way. Incredible sites across the entire island of Sicily which were all unique experiences. The TRUE highlight was our tour guide, Andrea, who was second-to-none. We cannot say enough about his expertise and care! Can't wait to do another!

The primary impression I took away from our Sicily tour was the passion that Andrea, our overall tour guide, and each of our local guides, exhibited for their homeland. I had expected to see a beautiful country, to learn about its rich history, and to have some delicious food. I had not expected the sense of love and respect for their Sicilian heritage that each of them exhibited. It was, for me, the highlight of the tour.

"In Ortigia at the Cattedrale metropolitana della Nativita di Maria Santissima, our local guide explained that it had been a temple to a Greek goddess, then a Roman goddess, and is now dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. All of this is an abundantly fertile land. On that particular spot, feminine fertility that yields and supports life, has been venerated for 2400 years. Possibly without knowing, she was paying tribute to what theologians now call "The Divine Feminine". "

We saw so much of Sicily that we would not have seen on our own. The convenience of a bus and a tour guide allowed us to cover the island in the time that we had. The sights that were included were extensive and Jaime had us perfectly timed to see them at opportune moments - ahead of large tour groups, school groups and cruises! The tour guides along the way were very knowledgeable and kept it very interesting. Also appreciated a little time each day to explore on our own.

Sicily did not disappoint! The people were extremely friendly and kind. The food and wine was maybe some of the best that I've ever had. Our tour guide, Alfredo, was outstanding (just like all RS tour guides - don't ask me to pick my favorite, because I can't). The local tours were unique and different - appreciate that. The cities (Palermo and Catania) were my least favorite - but I'm not a city girl, so that explains it.

"Taormina, for sure. When we were told that Italian's from the mainland come there to vacation, it makes total sense - I would vacation there, too. I regret not walking the 500 steps to the top of the hill but we had our shopping shoes on that day so we plum ran out of time. On our tour was a couple that had been to Taormina once, while being on a cruise, but they only had 4 hours to roam. This is the reason they chose this RS tour - to come back to Taormina. That says a lot!"

When To Go & Weather
Sicily's mild climate makes it a good place to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of March, April, May, June, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with smaller crowds and pleasant weather. September is the busiest. Visiting between November and February offers the benefit of missing out on the sweat, stress, and crowds of the tourist season, along with cool and crisp weather.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Palermo (PMO) and out of Catania (CTA) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or overnight stay. Note: Flights to and from Sicily often require at least one connection, and in some cases an additional night's stay in Europe.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Sicily guidebook.
