Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Scotland
We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Glasgow for a "Welcome to Scotland" get-together. Then we'll take an orientation walk through our neighborhood and get introduced to Glasgow's metro system, before getting acquainted over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Glasgow.
Day 2: Cosmopolitan Glasgow
Today our local guide will take us on a walking tour of Scotland's often-overlooked largest city. Famous for its architecture, Glasgow boasts Victorian facades, bold new construction, and beloved works by hometown visionary Charles Rennie Mackintosh — who gave Art Nouveau a Scottish burr. Along the way, we'll learn about the city's history and contemporary life, with stops at Glasgow Cathedral, bustling George Square, and thriving Merchant City. This afternoon you're free to explore Glasgow's world-class museums and the leafy parks of the West End. Tonight, find a local pub and enjoy some live music — trad or mod — in Scotland's music capital.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Glasgow.
Day 3: Stirling Castle
We'll begin our day with a visit to the famous castle of the Stuart kings, Stirling, with its commanding views and royal apartments. After lunch we'll drive along the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond on our way to the scenic coastal town of Oban, the "Gateway to the Isles." After an orientation along Oban's scenic waterfront, dinner can be easily found in Scotland's seafood capital.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Oban.
Day 4: Inspiring Isle of Iona
Today is for Scottish island-hopping: We'll ride a ferry and board a local bus for an entertaining trip across the island of Mull to the windswept Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. We'll visit the 800-year-old abbey where monks created the remarkable Book of Kells — a rare bright spot in Europe's Dark Ages. We'll then set you free to explore or find a spot to meditate on this tiny, spiritually charged island. We'll return to Oban, and our own century, in time for dinner.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Oban.
Day 5: Seaside Oban
Take a vacation from your vacation. Today is yours to hike up to McCaig's Tower for a sweeping harbor view, visit the ruined Dunollie Castle and its museum, take an excursion to Staffa, or just sit seaside and watch the sun set over the islands. However you spend your day, Oban is the perfect place to relax and drink in the best of the Scottish seaside.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No Bus. Sleep in Oban.
Day 6: Into the Highlands
This morning we'll head north into the rugged Highlands, stopping at the "weeping glen" of Glencoe — the hauntingly beautiful site of Scotland's most infamous massacre (Campbells and MacDonalds, leave your daggers on the bus). We'll continue through fabled scenery, where we will visit the evocative ruins of Urquhart Castle. After exploring its stony towers and expansive lake view, we'll take a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings not guaranteed). Then it's onto the capital of the Highlands, Inverness, where we'll take an orientation walk along the River Ness. Tonight is a great opportunity to enjoy some traditional music in one of Inverness' many fun-loving pubs.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 7: Battle of Culloden
Today we'll tour the powerful Culloden Battlefield — the "Scottish Alamo," where Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat in 1746 marked the beginning of the end of the Highland clan system. The remainder of the day is yours to explore Inverness' pedestrian-friendly downtown or stroll the lovely parks and promenades along the banks of the River Ness. Following an afternoon on your own, we'll share dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 8: Cairngorms National Park
Today we'll drive through Speyside, famous for its natural beauty and producing Scotland's favorite drink: whisky, on our way to Rothiemurchus, a Highland estate at the heart of Cairngorms National Park. With a ranger as our guide, we'll learn about one of the largest areas of natural forest in Britain and animal conservation efforts, including "hairy coos" (shaggy Highland cattle) and red deer. We'll enjoy lunch together featuring local produce from neighboring farms, followed by an afternoon stroll through the estate's diverse woodlands. This evening, we'll settle into our hotel at a village in the park and share dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in a village in the Cairngorms National Park.
Day 9: Sheepdogs, Whisky, and Bagpipes
We'll begin our day at a working sheep farm, where we'll watch talented sheepdogs in action and learn about Scotland's wool industry. Then we'll stop at a local whisky distillery to get the inside story about this iconic Scottish tradition and sample a wee dram or two. After free time for lunch, your guide will take you to their favorite stop along what's known as the spine of Scotland. This evening, we'll meet a Scottish bagpiper for some music and a lesson on this unusual instrument's history.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 10: Prehistoric Crannogs
This morning we're off to the picturesque village of Dunkeld on the River Tay, where we'll tour the town and its medieval cathedral with a local guide. After some free time to poke around town, we're off to learn about the Iron Age people who first farmed these lands and built Scotland's unique crannogs — prehistoric, thatched-roofed defensive huts built on piers out over the lochs. We'll regroup this evening for dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 11: St. Andrews and Edinburgh
We'll begin today with a visit to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and a mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course — considered the birthplace of golf — and enjoy lunch. Then we'll cross the famous Firth of Forth on our way into Edinburgh, where we'll wind our way through the Gothic streets of the old town, seeing the best of the city on foot. Our walking tour will take us up the Royal Mile — with its wealth of historic buildings, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards — then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars Cemetery. We'll set you free in Edinburgh's vibrant historical center with plenty of options to find dinner on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 12: Conquering Edinburgh Castle
This morning we'll make our way to the imposing Edinburgh Castle, where we'll explore this iconic hillside fort and royal residence complete with Scottish crown jewels, a Romanesque chapel, and dramatic views of the city. Tonight, we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping-off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Turas math dhut! (Happy travels!)

The destinations themselves were fine, as were the hotels and group meals, but the trip did not measure up to the 5 previous rick Steves tours that I’ve done. I don’t know if there are weird labor laws limiting the guides, or if they figure we speak English so we should just fend for ourselves, but it really felt as if they were phoning it in.

The tour was good. There were definitely highlights, such as our day in the Cairngorms and our day off in Oban when I went on a tour to see the puffins. There were some things that weren't as good as they could have been, such as some of the group dinners. Overall though, it was good.

"My favorite moment was seeing the highland cows in the Cairngorms. Highland cows are my favorite animal, and it was amazing to be able to see them in person. They are such wonderful creatures, and getting as close to them as we did was truly beautiful."

We are experienced Rick Steves travelers and on this tour we found the most rewarding experiences to be a mix of those that were part of the tour itinerary but also those we explored on our own using the Rick Steves guide book for suggestions. The free time on the tour made it possible for us to fully explore those aspects of Scottish national culture that resonate with us specifically the amazing art found in Scotland.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"In no particular order of ‘Wowness’, I found the following experiences so rewarding while on tour. Enjoying for the first time the amazing Glasgow Boys’ art at the Kelvingrove Museum. The quiet, spiritual nature of Iona. The entire day on the Rothiemurchus Highland Estate (red deer, hairy coos, and falconry) was a Scottish trifecta! Our evening with Gillie and her amazing bagpipe discussion. The art at the National Gallery in Edinburgh including the special exhibit of the art of John Lavery."

Our long awaited tour to Scotland was absolutely fantastic!!! We visited so many awesome sites and our guides, Anne and Virginie, were knowledgeable, energetic and engaging. Our fellow tour members were adventurous and fun to be with. I think everyone had a wonderful time seeing new sights and making new friends. I'm already thinking about our next Rick Steves tour!

"Every moment was amazing so it is hard to pick just one. Upon learning my trip to Scotland was motivated by my interest in tracking my Scottish roots, Anne arranged a quick side trip to Carrbridge where my ancestors lived in the early 1800's. That was extra special! "

The tour group of travelers were great. Friendly and always welcoming. The guide was knowledgeable about Scotland and its history. The tour is a nice, slow paced tour that had many interesting sites. There are several opportunities to improve the tour that need to be taken advantage of and that would put it more in line with my previous experiences on Rick Steves tours with respect to timing and activities.

With very few exceptions, this tour was fabulous. Scotland, known for it's chilly, damp weather was having an unusually cold and wet spring/summer. We soldiered through, got soaked several times and laughed when it was stormiest. The other people & our guide were as upbeat and united as we were.

We booked this tour at kind of the last minute and we enjoyed Scotland quite a bit. The weather was quite poor but had our rain gear and layers to fight back. I felt the iternarey was "out of whack" as we spent 2+ days in Oban (where we had our worst weather). Booked a puffin tour that was canceled due to the poor weather (40 knot winds and whitecaps in the harbor at Oban). One less night in Oban and one more in Inverness seems a better plan.

My 17-year-old son I I enjoyed our tour through Scotland. This was our first tour group experience and we enjoyed our guide, our itinerary, and our overall experience. Despite the weather not cooperating for the entirety of our trip, the rugged beauty of Scotland stood out, and our guide did a wonderful job of sharing the complex history of Scotland along the way. Our fellow travelers mostly all shared the "Rick Steves' travel ethos", which made our time together enjoyable as well.

"Visiting the Isle of Iona was the point of the trip where I finally felt a disconnect from my normal day-to-day existence and felt immersed in a different world. Having previously seen the Book of Kells at Trinity College in Dublin, visiting the monastery that (most likely) played a role in its creation felt like connecting the dots through centuries of history."

I enjoyed touring Scotland with a group of easy-going folks. The itinerary needs help. Group meals are a way for tour members to bond. After the welcome dinner, there wasn’t another group meal until day 7. In some places, our time was too rushed. In contrast, in Oban and Inverness there was too much free time and not enough to do (though we did love the live music in Inverness’ pubs.) For reasons unknown, we didn’t get to meet Gillie and learn about bagpiping and one group dinner was skipped.

"It was very special spending time with shepherd Neil Ross and watching his dogs in action herding sheep. I also loved our day on the Rothiemurchus estate in Cairngorms National Park. We met and fed the Highland calves and cows and red deer, had a bountiful and exquisite lunch of farm-fresh food under a beautiful tent, enjoyed a peaceful and scenic hike to a pond, and ended our time there with a very entertaining show, Johnny demonstrating his trained birds of prey. A good measure of an experience is whether your response is “great” regardless of weather. We witnessed much of Scotland’s changeable weather and our tour was wonderful, not in spite of, but because we got a true feel for all the things that contribute to the Scottish identity—-It’s natural beauty (weather plays a big part), its history and lovely people.

The tour was a wonderful experience! Our tour guide, Charlie, was so knowledgeable about Scotland and its history. Every place we visited was so interesting. I love Rick Steves tours because the lodging, travel and some meals are covered by the price which makes it less stressful when planning a trip.

"There were so many special moments from the tour that it’s hard to pick one! The scenery of Scotland is so beautiful and green and the many historical places we stopped at were amazing. I loved visiting Stirling Castle and listening to the guide about the history. One special ‘wow’ moment was when Neil prepared to shear a sheep and using his dog whistle was able to ‘hypnotize’ the animal. That was amazing!"

"When Neal put the sheep he was going to shear into a trance using a method he was shown by a Native American I was amazed. There are too many things to pick a single moment from. All of Rick Steve's tours are great, but this tour was phenomenal! Charlie immediately made us feel at home, and was very attentive to all of our needs. Under her guidance, we became a family, and made lasting friendships! You could tell she impressed the hotel staffs and local guides too, as they all gave us a warm welcome. Her and her local guides narrations during the tour were in depth, and really gave us something to ponder.

Overall, the tour was very good. However, it was not as well organized and planned as the seven other tours we have taken with RSE. The logistics and timing of several of the experiences was not as well thought out as the other tours.. There was not an issue with the guide. It was how the tour was designed. Specifically, there was timing issues on the trip to Iona, Urquhart Castle and the Crannogs. Timing seemed to be wasted on other parts of the tour.

Overall the tour was very good, it was not up to par with the 7 other Rick Steves tours we have taken. The logistics/timing of some of the experiences was not good- I think the tour needs to be reworked. Primary complaint is that we had too little time to experience some of the sights, for example Iona, Stirling Castle, Urquhart Castle, the Crannogs exhibit, etc. Although the tour members were nice people, the group did not “get” as in past tours. This detracted from the overall experience.

Overall had a very good experience, EXCEPT, the weather was dreadful (rainy, windy, cold) and I got sick possibly with pneumonia. The problem with tours is that you are in a bus with total strangers, and you have no idea if anyone is bringing illnesses with them, that can spread. A lot of people were coughing and wheezing on this. The itinerary was wonderful, Nigel was very knowledgeable. But the overall experience was affected by the weather and getting sick through the entire trip.

This was our 6th RS tour which we thoroughly enjoyed but felt the tour schedule could be tweaked a little. For example not having the "vacation from the vacation" early on the trip on day 5 so we went 5 days between group dinners.. It was comprehensive. We learned about Scottish history and key events and people. We explored small villages current and ancient, and the distinctness of the large cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. This was our first Rick Steves tour - overall, excellent, we're already planning our next Rick Steves tour for 2025. Nigel, the tour guide, has excellent knowledge of each area visited on the tour, and is an excellent communicator of that information. Excellent tour destinations - some a bit hurried, such as the visit to the island of Iona, because lots of sea + land travel involved. But better to have that experience on a somewhat hurried timeframe than not to do it at all. Great tour!

"A favorite experience was during an afternoon off from the tour: Wife and I arranged a guided tour of the Oban whisky distillery in Oban, a stop along the tour route. Very interesting to see how whisky is made, and taste a variety of Oban whisky products. The whisky tour that was part of the formal Rick Steves itinerary failed - it turned out that the distillery manufacturing area was closed on the day of our visit. So we were talked at for 30 minutes, no tour, then tastings. Disappointing."

Touring Scotland in 13 days was an adventure of a lifetime for us. We saw very relevant sights and learned interesting historical facts along the way. Most ways of life were explored from the major cities to the sheep ranch. From the Islands off west coast to the shores of the North Sea on the east. Touring ancient ruins to Whisky distillery to Cairngorms national park. We believe we got to experience the heartbeat of Scotland in many different ways.

"For my husband, it was the very first Cathedral, Glasgow Cathedral- and the fact it took hundreds of years to finish, the enormity and workmanship, and being able to walk the grounds and admire the overwhelming presence. For me it was when our guide James sang in the small sanctuary at the abbey on Iona. I was overcome with the sense and sound, thinking how it must have been when the monks were practicing there so very long ago. The simplicity of life on the island, the scenery were beautiful."

I feel that the itinerary could be changed. The trip to Iona took the whole day to get there, then most places had already stopped serving food but the time we were set free. The day visiting the crannogs didn’t seem to be appealing to most. We all ended up smelling like smoke from the campfires and when you have to wear your clothes multiple days, this was unappealing. The hotel in Edinburgh was a distance from the things we needed to see and it limited people’s interest in trying to go out.

"There was more than one but perhaps the pristine, wild highlands and the fauna - hairy coos, falconry and sheep herding. But the trip to Iona was also wonderful and Culloden was a moving experience. One serendipitous event occurred on the ferry to Mull: a men’s choir from Norway was seated all around me and when the boat started out, all the men started singing sea chantiers. They were on their way to the Abbey of St. Colomba on Iona to give a concert. It was a beautiful experience to hear them."

"There were several "wow" moments, but one that wasn't expected was the herd of red deer that greeted us at the highland estate in the Cairngorms National Park, as well as seeing several hairy coos up close. One other "wow" is my husband left his wedding ring our last morning at BB+Edinburgh. I'm delighted to say with the staff finding his ring & the assistance of On Call International that the RS Tour provides, it made its way back to my husband's finger where it belongs! "

We visited so many beautiful and diverse places in Scotland, from cities to small towns and villages, as well as gorgeous mountains and valleys an farmland. Our guide, Anne, was delightful, helpful and very knowledgeable about Scotland’s long history. We really enjoyed getting to know our fellow travelers who all clearly love traveling and were great fun to be with.

"There were many, but the trip to the island of Iona was very special and also our visit to Neil’s farm was particularly memorable. Watching him work his dogs was fascinating, but we were all totally amazed to watch him hypnotize - in seconds - the sheep he was about to shear. I have seen sheep sheared before, but never one hypnotized!"

I had a great time. Was able to see so many beautiful buildings and locations. There were several spots that i'd liked to have had more time in. Some of the hotels were fine, some not. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. The main bus driver was also a great resource. We felt that a guided tour was a necessity, but we no longer feel that way!

"Hard to say, but probably the time we spend in Edinburgh. A day and a half wouldn't have been nearly enough- we stayed two additional days. I also really enjoyed the time in Oban, and Glasgow was made more special by the thousands of soccer fans who were there when we were. The murals were beautiful as well."

Overall, I was disappointed in this tour. I often felt rushed at our destinations. We just arrived at our location, and we had to find a place to eat lunch, actually get seated and served, and eat, and it left little time to explore the area. Our hotels were rundown. I don't mind old, or a place with character, but the carpets often appeared dirty, and wallpaper was peeling in one location. Our bonding as a group was not adequate. Ten people had to leave due to Covid. I was one of those.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"I did not have a "Wow" moment on this tour. I enjoyed Oban, (other than the hotel), and our trip to Iona and the Abbey. Our walking tour of Glasgow with our local guide, Jenny, was fun and informative. I enjoyed the shepherding demonstration, and the Stirling castle tour. I liked the wildness of Glencoe. Everything was too rushed, and not enough time in most spots to explore. "

tour did not meet our expectations. group events were disappointing - and started at the first day. rushed introductions - terrible first dinner where we sat separated at 8 different tables with poor service and poor food. 29 too many for one guide. Covid was allowed to spread - folks came to tour hot and no one was asked to test - even those coughing on the Covid coach. we lost 1/3 of group. Oban Royal Hotel bad. Once off tour excommunicated - not even to share emails. Rude.

Overall the entire tour was awesome! Helen was amazing. Her knowledge was incredible. Such a sweet soul. We did however have one water incident at the best Hotel of the trip. This was in the Dunkeld House Hotel on day 9. We were awakened at 3:00 AM by the sound of dripping and our bed was soaked. I called the front desk and they were there in minutes to move us to a new room. We had to pack up our belongings. They also reported back that the water was coming from the toilet above us.

"After hearing the story of what happened in Glencoe, we went up to the three sisters in the highlands and they took my breath away and to top it off, a person in full highland garb began playing Amazing Grace on the Bagpipes. The tears were relentless. Very touching moment. Then of course there was my dream to see the Old Course At St . Andrews and our driver, Ian had booked the putting course for myself and 2 others. So I guess I can say, "I played St. Andrews!""

When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Scotland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. While Scotland never quite feels crowded, July and August are considered peak season, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).

Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Please note: There are no triple rooms available on this tour.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Glasgow (GLA) and out of Edinburgh (EDI) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Alternatively, Glasgow and Edinburgh are less than an hour apart by train. You could choose to fly roundtrip to/from one of the cities and then take a train between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Scotland guidebook.
