Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Scotland
We'll gather at our hotel in Inverness at 4 p.m. for a "Welcome to Scotland" meeting. Then we'll take a neighborhood orientation walk and get acquainted with one another over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 2: Castles and Culloden
This morning we'll enjoy a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings not guaranteed) before disembarking at the dramatic lochside ruins of Urquhart Castle. Then we're off to still-lived-in Cawdor Castle, where we'll stroll through manicured gardens and enjoy afternoon tea. We'll end our day together with a tour of the evocative Culloden Battlefield, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat in 1746 marked the beginning of the end of the Highland clan system. Tonight is a great opportunity to enjoy some traditional music in one of Inverness' many pubs.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Inverness.
Day 3: The Rugged, Romantic Highlands
Today we'll explore more of the scenic and romantic Highlands as we travel to Perthshire. On the way we'll stop in Speyside, happy home to half of all Scotland's whisky distilleries and one of its few remaining woolen mills. We'll tour a local distillery and sample a wee dram, then head across town to experience the fine art of weaving. After lunch together, we'll visit a local sheep farm to learn more about Scotland's wool industry and marvel at the talented sheepdogs in action. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together and meet a Scottish bagpiper for some music and a lesson on this unusual instrument's history.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 4: Crannogs and Hermits
This morning we'll learn about the Iron Age people who first farmed these lands and built Scotland's unique crannogs — prehistoric, thatched-roofed defensive huts built on piers out over the lochs. After lunch together, we're off to the charming village of Dunkeld on the River Tay, where we'll have a guided tour of its medieval cathedral before enjoying free time to poke around town. This afternoon, we'll take a walk to the Hermitage, where we'll hear about Scottish Romanticism amidst Black Linn Falls and towering forest. After time to relax, we'll regroup this evening for dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Perthshire.
Day 5: Charming St. Andrews
Today we're off to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and a mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course — considered the birthplace of golf — and enjoy lunch. Then, we'll cross the famous Firth of Forth on our way to Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. Your guide will orient you to our lively neighborhood before setting you free for the rest of the evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 6: Edinburgh's Historic Heart
This morning we'll take a walking tour of Edinburgh's old town, winding our way up the Royal Mile with its wealth of historic buildings, quaint shops, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards — then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars cemetery. We'll set you free for the afternoon and evening to visit imposing Edinburgh Castle (entry ticket provided) at your leisure to see the Scottish Crown Jewels and soak up the dramatic views from this military stronghold and birthplace of the city.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 7: The Politics of Scotland
Since the days of William Wallace, the Scots have chafed under English rule, and over the centuries Scotland's drive for independence hasn't waned. Today we'll explore the complicated relationship between Scotland and England and learn about the modern independence movement that came with self-rule. Then we'll take a look at the "other side" with a visit to the King's official residence in Edinburgh, the elegant Palace of Holyroodhouse. The remainder of the day is yours to explore more of this regal city. Tonight we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Edinburgh.
Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Turas math dhut! (Happy travels!)

We had a wonderful guide who was extremely informative and personable. The accommodations were comfortable and the other guests were friendly. The pace was a bit rushed at times as I would have enjoyed spending more time as some places (e.g., town of Inverness, St. Andrews). However I appreciated the opportunity to have a breadth of experiences and learn about Scotland and its history.

This was one of the best trips that I have ever taken. It was very organized and well thought out. We went to places that I would never have thought of visiting. Our group was fun and engaged and made lasting friendships. I really enjoyed to visit to Loch Roddard and the stay at the hotel. I would go back again. Actually, I would take this trip again with only a few changes.

This was my first Rick Steve’s tour. My parents had gone on several before and could not speak more highly of it. I could not agree more. It was a wonderful experience that I could have never planned by myself. I loved touring several of the castles and learning about the Scottish history, especially at the battle of Culloden. Visiting the woolen mill and sheep farm were also unforgettable experiences. I will definitely be recommending any of these tours to friends in the future.

This was our 8th Rick Steves' tour, so we had high expectations, met by a fantastic guide named Liz who was knowledgeable, well organized, flexible and fun. It rained often, but we were able to do most of what is on the itinerary. One change was in Edinburgh because there was a royal family member staying at Palace of Holyroodhouse, which closed it to the public. We instead toured the decommissioned royal yacht, the Britannia, as an excellent substitute. The tour provided food was also great.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Scotland's incredible scenery, especially in the highlands, provided many wow moments. My favorite activity was visiting the Crannog Centre where they have artifacts from pre-historic iron age people who lived in houses built on stilts out over the loch. They have taken great care to re-create a small village to demonstrate how the people lived. I also loved the border collies herding sheep, even in the pouring rain! Bottle feeding orphaned lambs and sweet puppies was icing on the cake, "

A great time for our first vacation tour overseas! We learned so much on the 8-day tour about Scotland, the history, the people, the geology, the food, the politics, the products (whisky, wool, golf), how ways to be good tourists (including using public transit on a regular basis). We augmented the tour with a few days beforehand in Glasgow, Oban, Mull, and Iona, and in St. Andrews afterwards, as we wanted to experience a little bit on our own. Our tour guides, Liz and Paul were top-notch.

"Which one? Looking down the River Ness in Inverness, learning there were 15 churches in our line-of-sight? The castles? The boat ride down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle? The Culloden battlefield? The Whisky tour at Glen Moray, Loch Lomond or Loch Tummel and the Queen's View? Seeing St. Andrews and the Old Course & Links in person? Or Edinburgh, with its volcanic base, Castle, Crown Jewels, Calton Hill, HMY Brittanica? I think... the geologic history and how it shaped events in Scotland"

It was informative, breathtakingly beautiful and fun. Our tour guide, Jodie Stalker, was the highlight of the trip. I have used RS books for travel but this was my first tour of any kind and RS was the way to go! Our guide, Charlie, was incredible and set the bar high, she knows and loves Scotland and shared that enthusiasm with every person in the group. I felt as if I came home with a wealth of knowledge I would have never received traveling by myself, and opened us up to see things we would have missed. I cannot wait to take another tour and see the world through another RS guide next year!

"Seeing Neil with his dogs, sheering a sheep, or the walking tour in Edinburgh discussing the past and present would be easy to say as a wow moment, but honestly Charlie providing us with background before we went somewhere and encouraging us to talk to people and try different foods or treats made my trip the most memorable. I do not think I have ever had the opportunity to go on such a variety of tours or to feel as if connected so much with another country as I did with Scotland. Slainte!"

Jodi and tour were outstanding from Day 1. Everyday was a new & exciting adventure full of beautiful country side and interesting history come to life. Cawdor Castle gardens were beautiful. Having an after dinner bagpiper play was interesting but more playing and less story would have been better. The crannog tour was very interesting and the 2 young singers were wonderful. The sheep outside the hotel & beautiful green scenery everywhere made each day magical. Nice Edinburgh hotel location.

I thought the tours in and around Inverness and Perth were excellent. We spent 3 days in Edenborough and felt like we were left on our own for over half of that time. This was our second tour within a 3 week period. Previously, we took the 7 day Ireland tour with Pascal and took a week off prior to the Scotland tour. We visited Belfast for 3 days and 4 days in St. Andrews before catching up with the tour in Inverness. Well organized with excellent guides and good drivers. Couldn't have predicted the floods that caused rerouting several times or the Covid that impacted 8 (?) or more of our group. Some room choices were far less than satisfactory. Inverness with no chairs and a broken bed, Edinburgh with one chair and a platform bed with a single point of access, good if you are a teenager and need to jump around. neither room good for dual occupancy.

All of the guides were top-notch, especially Helen. The restaurant selections were also very good. Our room at the Glen Mohr was the smallest hotel room I have ever encountered. The bed was worn out/broken and the room did not even have a chair - we had to borrow one from the restaurant. The Loch Rannoch Hotel was very comfortable and exceeded my expectations. The Wilde Aparthotel in Edinburgh was very uncomfortable and poor choice for a seasoned 55+ group (platform bed and Ikea furniture)

Seeing the castle and cathedral ruins, the Culloden battlefield, and the Scottish Crannog Center really helped me to understand the history of Scotland. I greatly enjoyed learning visiting the cooperage, watching the working sheep dogs, seeing St. Andrews. These things really set the stage, and to finish off with a walking tour of Edinburgh and visits to the Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Scottish Parliament just completed the picture for me.

I would not do this tour again nor would I recommend it. There was too much time spent driving to places we didn't want to see. This was our first 'guided' tour and our first Rick Steve's Tour. We were not sure how we would like being on a tour bus. Let us first say our RSGuide Jodie was awesome and I was sad to leave her. Jimmy the bus driver was also amazing. This is more important than you think because we traveled for days on roads that let only one car through at a time. He cleaned the bus inside and out daily. I even caught him washing the hub caps because we had gone through a puddle earlier.

Overall the experience was good. I would not call it great. There was a lot of time spent riding on the bus. I understand that happens when moving around, but the Loch Rannoch Hotel was way out of the way and took a lot of time for the bus to drive in/out to hotel. This meant we had almost no free time until we got to Edinburg and we had very little time in St. Andrews. Also the wording needs to change about visiting Edinburg castle. It was not clear it was included and cost us ~ $125 for 4.

"I it’s a tossup between being able to take a boat onto Loch Ness, or going to Edinburgh castle in Holyrood."

The time spent in Inverness was great, length appropriate. The middle portion of the tour had too much bus time repeating the same routes multiple times. The whisky stops were on two different days which didn't reflect the best planning. We were given only a couple of hours in amazing St. Andrews, which needed more time. The time in Edinburgh was outstanding. Yet, there were conflicts between the internet and actual itinerary, causing conflicts with our prebooked items- - very disappointing.

"There were no WOW moments, but rather a over all deepened understanding of the culture and history of the country. This was best experienced at the Culloden battle field. "

Great tour! Wish we could have stayed longer but this fit our schedule. The weather was fantastic for us, like springtime compared to summer in Florida. Jaime, our tour guide and entertainer could do standup comedy for sure!

"While the sheep dogs were amazing and we got to see the ‘Hairy Coos!’, pulling into our hotel on Loch Rannoch with its pristine beauty and Schiehallion as the backdrop was it for me. It’s a drive to get to the hotel, but our driver Jimmy has some major skills. "

We greatly enjoyed our tour Guide, Jamie, and the insights into Scottish history and culture that she provided. We also enjoyed the various activities that were included, especially the visit with Neil, the shepherd, and the visit to the recreated Crannog site. If we had toured on our own, we would not likely have stopped for these two experiences. The hotels and the restaurant choices were all lovely.

Jamie was an excellent guide, Jimmy did a great job driving our bus through difficult narrow roads. Itinerary not quite as good as some other RS tours. Our two days in Loch Rannoch put us in a "bubble" with no interaction with the outside world, limiting our experience of current Scotland. I've now been on four RS tours. Every one of them has been almost entirely couples and families with very few solo travelers. I've never quite felt like I fit in.

"There were a number of Wow! moments….the boat ride to Urquhart Castle and the stay in Edinburg. Walking out the front door of the hotel in Edinburgh and looking up at the castle then walking around the corner to the Grassmarket. And the visit to the working sheep farm with Neal and his dogs! All Wow! moments in different ways. "

Our family of four had a wonderful time! This was our last big "guaranteed" family vacation before our daughter goes off to college and forges her own path, and she chose the Scotland tour. It couldn't have been better. Ross, our tour guide, was the glue that held everything together and his knowledge of Scotland seemed infinite (plus, he was very funny!).

"Neil and the sheep dogs were simply amazing. It was pouring down rain when we were there, but that didn't dampen :) the experience at all. Loch Ness was serene and beautiful, the castles and their histories were fascinating, and the group we toured with was great."

This was my first Rick Steves Tour and I went solo. (I get more vacation than my husband since I am a teacher, so I decided to tour Scotland before meeting my husband for two weeks in Ireland.) I ended up being the only solo traveler on the trip, but I loved our entire experience. Ross Tillbrook was our guide and he was FANTASTIC. Laid back and calm...yet full of information.....just like I like it. I do not have enough great things to say about the tour. Every place we visited was perfect.

"I loved being in the towns and cities, meeting the wonderful people of Scotland. They were so kind and open to sharing. I LOVED the sheep herding experience and I also loved hearing Gilley and her bagpipes and funny antidotes she shared. (I think you should see if she could also bring her own children and grandchildren sometime. I bet they'd be AMAZING together. Kind of like the Von Trapp's of bagpiping. haha) "

This was our very first tour and we were pleasantly surprised. We have done a lot of traveling on our own but we thought we would see more of Scotland with a tour. We found that we were very compatible with the other tour members and that we did, in fact, see a variety of sights. Having a tour guide enhanced the trip as well.

When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Scotland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. While Scotland never quite feels crowded, July and August are considered peak season, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).
