Hi From Rick: Traveling During Protests
Almost forty years ago, I received this grainy picture from Paris, showing the bombed-out husk of a car. My car.
The picture came from my friend, fellow tour guide, and guidebook co-author, Steve Smith. Steve and I co-owned a Volkswagen Westfalia van, which Steve had shipped from the US to Europe when his family moved to France. "Vinnie van Go," as we called it, was dear to both of us. And the car served valiantly as a production wagon and home-on-the-road as we filmed our first-ever round of public television shows.
Poor Vinnie was firebombed on the streets of Paris during a 1990 student protest, sacrificed for the cause of better classrooms. Steve explained that Vinnie van Go was one of about 50 other cars burned in the riot. Vinnie van Gone… Read more
