Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" get-together. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces – the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly-preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese Peninsula, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. From the end of the line, our bus will take us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains, where we'll enjoy dinner from a wood-fired oven. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hr. Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to the relaxed seaside village of Kardamyli, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Kardamyli

Kardamyli is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. After making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically-set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the day is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably-domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 15,000 togas. We'll learn about the roots of drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day and evening are free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hire a boat for the day, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hrs. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

I appreciated that this tour did not miss any important places. It was very well organized tour.

"Everything was WOW factor....It is hard to say. After visiting kardamyli, we visited very tiny village. When I entered into a old church, I had a chill on my back. My husband and I are luckily MEGA fit, we did many hiking with other members. We were so happy to walk around the beautiful coast line of Monemvasia. That was also WOW moment."

This was my 2nd Rick Steves tour and it far surpassed any expectations I had. I felt that not only did we experience the "obvious" attractions in Greece, we went to so many other absolutely beautiful, enriching places - especially all the coastal towns. These were extremely delightful, relaxing, beautiful, peaceful and full of history. The scenic mountainous terrain of the Peloponnese (alive with wildflowers this time of year - BIG BONUS!) was definitely a surprise!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"With my free afternoon in Monemvasia, I joined 4 others to hike around the island, to the farthest point possible. It felt like the 5 of us had the island to ourselves. None of us wanted to leave the quiet, the calm, the ever-so-blue water, the total beauty of the moments there. My second WOW moment would be at Epidavros, listening to the acoustics of the hand-clapping at the "stage" of the theater - AMAZING!"

I continue to be impressed by the congeniality of the groups that come together for RS tours. The itinerary kept us hopping, with a good balance between intense and more relaxed stops. Seeing, in person, significant sites of Western classical history was moving and inspiring. Local guides were incredibly knowledgeable & articulate in sharing their knowledge. In between our access to the experts, Colin kept us well informed about classical and modern Greek issues and events.

"Freshly squeezed orange juice from fruit right off the tree in Nafplio. Waves of exuberant students pouring down the trails of Mycenae and Epidavros. A sense of heartbreaking decline for the community of Lagkadia."

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour, our 7th with ETBD. The people, the history, the countryside, the food, our guide, and all our tour members made for a truly enjoyable two weeks. To stay away from visiting Greece because of their economic problems is not a wise decision. My biggest impression of the Greeks is that, despite their problems (and they've had many throughout history), they will survive. Greece is one of the most enjoyable places I've visited. Did I mention the food?

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I especially enjoyed the Mani peninsula, with its wild lands and independent people. Delphi and Olympia were both memorable. Hydra was a joy to the senses and a most relaxing way to finish the tour. The crazy crowds of Greek school kids out on field trips was really fun to see also, especially when a group approached my wife and me to practice their English."

This was my first Rick Steves tour and I now understand why some in our group taken multiple tours. The program for our two weeks in Greece was superbly planned to show us the highlights of Greece, help us gain a fuller understanding of the country and the people, and to help us feel comfortable exploring on our own wherever we went. Our guide and the Greek guides were enthusiastic and knowledgable. I enjoyed the special events, too--olive tasting, wine tasting and Greek dancing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to choose one moment. It's such a personal matter. But for me visiting Delphi was my favorite day. Our guide Christine made Delphi so real and meaningful. The setting up against the mountains with a view down to the sea amid poplar trees really put me back in the time the ruins of the temples, the theater and the stadium represented when men consulted the oracle there. After reading about ancient Greek history and culture and visiting museums, Delphi felt real to me."

The large bus was great so the 14 participants could spread out. The bus driver, Costas, was great. We loved all of the walking and the many hikes we took. This was my first Rick Steves Tour. I chose Rick Steves because of the small group size. We have used Rick Steves tour books for the last ten years and love the books.

The places we visited were so interesting that it would be difficult to make a bad tour out of them; however, thanks to our extraordinary guide, Colin, so much more was added. Colin brought us his own specialized knowledge of archeology, art, history and life in Greece in modern times. The tour was a well balanced mixture of longer and more active days with periods for free choice, but free choice where there were plenty of possibilities covering a wide range.

This was my first Rick Steves tour (although my hubby and I have used Rick's guides for years, and adopted much of the Back Door philosophy). Even with all the travel shows viewed, and testimonials read, I must say that this trip totally exceeded my already high expectations. The efficiency of this tour style (the highest quality experience for the most modest cost and time spent) is hard to grasp until you have lived it. The joy of sharing it with sympatico companions is icing on the cake.

Great! We have always traveled independently in Europe. This was our first group tour. We enjoyed the interaction with the tour guides and the fellow travelers. The tour allowed us to experience some places and restaurants that we would not have done on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Greek People and the Greek food. The cooking demonstration was excellent. This allowed me to realize that I can continue to enjoy our tour by preparing Greek food at home. The Greek music and dancing was great! We purchased a copy of the music so we can enjoy the Greek music and food and remember our trip. Being able to see a flock of sheep being herded by a shepherdess one day as we stopped at a restaurant for lunch."

This tour was fantastic. As a veteran of 10 Rick Steves tours now, over 20 years, I have found them to be consistently wonderful experiences, but this one was a particular joy. Our guide David was spectacular. The tour group was a complete pleasure to travel with, everyone kind and companionable. Our visits to museums and major sites such as the Acropolis were led by excellent local guides. In the countryside of the Peloponnese, surprises unfolded. And Hydra provided a great island experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many. Seeing the Parthenon for the first time, and works of art I knew only from books. Running the length of the stadium at the Sanctuary of Olympia. Realizing that Greece is covered with wildflowers in the spring. And that fried calamari could be so tender, sweet, and delicious, especially the tentacles! Tasting mastic liqueur (yum!). Being in Monemvasia on a local religious holiday, and watching the priests emerge from church, dressed in their beautiful ornate robes."

Possibly the best trip of our lives because of a top-notched guide and a varied and important itinerary. Accommodations, food, bus, driver& stops were excellent & group fellow members were congenial, interesting & fun. The unexpected cold, wet and blustery weather was the only aspect of the trip that was a disappointment, which of course no one could control, but our guide modified plans when able, and the group handled it well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Each town/city had been [INVALID]ed for special and different importance-perhaps history, geography,or possible experiences for our group. While iconic sites & beautiful museums with wonderful pieces fulfilled my dreams, I liked the more "authentic" small towns and villages & spontaneous activities that involved Greek people's lives, work & culture- a tiny family restaurants with great food, walks in local gardens and among wild flowers, olive curing, Greek dancing, a tiny Byzantine church, & more."

"There wasn't just one, but in general our most memorable moments were when my husband and I hiked off the beaten track, like up to a monastery in Hydra and a church on a hill in Kardamyli. What can I say other that it was wonderful tour experience. Mr. Willett set the tone with his relaxed manner, and this particular group was just wonderful. He made everyone feel comfortable on the tour, especially me.

"I had a few "WOW" moments. One was when the guide, George in Mystras chanted in Greek in the ruins of a church on our Easter Sunday. The oranges in Nafplio, the greek yogurt and honey and the bread!"

My overall experience was good. Athens is a little dirty. Greece is in a depressed economy and in places it really shows. Outside of Athens the countryside is very pretty and the people are friendly. Couldn't possibly do this in 500 characters. The whole trip was truly magical. David made Western Civilization come alive; best tour guide ever, as were the guides at the various sites we visited. Best part was the great group of people on the trip. Before this trip, I didn't like guided tours--have traveled all over Europe with just the Rick Steves books--but this experience made me a believer. Can't wait for my next Rick Steves adventure in the fall. What great friends I made.

I got more for my money than I paid. I was apprehensive about taking a group tour. There was no need for apprehension. This tour could not have been any better. I not only saw ancient sights but I feel I truly got to experience Greek culture. David made this tour. "Touring Mystra on Easter was joyful. At the end of the tour, we were allowed to view wares made by the nuns. We could buy items which helped nuns with income and to support some local families. I looked at a couple of items and I left a donation. Our tour guide that day tapped me on the back after I had left and gave me a gift. It was an item made by the nuns. We had a great time and found Colin and Angelos very knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen to and be with. Colin, especially, was impressive in the range and detail of his knowledge and presentation of all things Greek. We had some rain the first week and it was a bit cooler than I had thought it would be, but the second week was glorious weather, just in time for Monemvasia and Hydra. Loved our little primer of Greek phrases and greetings, which we used more as time went on.

"The history and just the incredible "ancientness" of everything we saw, layer upon layer of civilization and yet "nothing new under the sun" with clever kitchen appliances and children's toys displayed in the museums alongside the beautiful pottery. I loved the Acropolis Museum and story of the "missing" Elgin marbles, Monemvasia, and Hydra. Loved Colin's take on Greek myths, gods, and goddesses!"

Excellent experience again with Rick Steves tour. Colin Clement is very knowledgeable on Greece and I enjoyed listening to him share his knowledge. He has this tour down and his experience and confidence made this tour a good experience. Angelos is full of energy and enthusiasm that is contagious. It was a pleasure to have him on the tour also with his "local" perspective, his loyalty to Greece, and his desire to share with us his love for his country.

We enjoyed exploring Europe with Colin and Angelos. Our tour group consisted of many people who'd been on previous RS tours and we bonded very well. We shared a wonderful virus with each other, so we all bonded with a common nasty cough. Feeling crummy wasn't the best way to experience Greece, but we all managed to push through it. Our local tour guides were all knowledgeable and personable.

We had a wonderful trip touring Athens and the Heart of Greece. I did not realize how rugged the countryside is until we took this tour. The wildflowers covering the mountains, lush green valleys and even some snow capped peaks were such a welcome invitation to discover Greece. The people we met on the tour, our guides and the local villagers were all friendly, warm and genuinely happy that we were there visiting their country.

"My favorite "wow" moment was visiting Olympia and seeing the training grounds, the Olympic track and even the location where the Olympic torch is first lit. It was amazing to see how much of the ruins remain still today and think back to what it must have been like at the first Olympic games. We've come a long way with many new events, but it was a beautiful, peaceful location to start the Olympic tradition for the whole world."

We really had a good group of people and a great guide on this tour. Everyone got along really well and I thought that Colin's comments were very insightful. This well-designed tour should be on everyone's bucket list. We were exposed in proper doses not only to Greece's ancient history, but also to its current political and economic challenges. We experienced the hustle and bustle of Athens, as well as the slower pace in rural towns and seaside villages. From this tour, we gained a fuller understanding of the beginning of civilization and how Greece's ancient history still influences our lives today.

Fantastic experience. Tour was well formulated and executed. Though lead guide, Colin, was ill during part of the trip, he kept up a "stiff upper lip" and consistently delivered an approachable historical backdrop for visited sites. Excellent local guides would then "fill in the details". Fellow tour participants were a congenial crew and the professionalism of our coach driver, George, was reassuring. Native apprentice guide, Angelos, provided a unique "Greek" perspective.

His knowledge of history and how all the pieces fit together is amazing. His understanding of people and his ability to "read" a group of travelers is beyond compare. The tour was an overall success despite some challenging circumstances. The weather was not optimal, most of the group caught colds, and one member had a serious medical issue. Our trip was AWESOME!We had a great time;saw parts of Greece we wouldn't have found on our own;and were able to relax completely and leave the details of how, when and where to somebody else! It was a unique sort of feeling to awaken in a picturesque mountain town somewhere in Greece with only the vaguest idea of the name of the town and it's location. An orgy of ruins, antiquity & history, moderated by breathtaking scenery and great food. I actually liked Athens a lot more than your guide book led me to expect. The sense of economic frustration and despair, throughout the country, was truly sobering.

This was a tour for people who love ruins and the profound sense of history that comes only from standing on the site. I've been one or two RSE tours every year since 2010. I find them very satisfactory for me as a single traveler. There really are "no grumps." Fun is balanced nicely with intellectual and cultural stimulation. The tour overall was outstanding. It was a very cohesive and cooperative group. Everyone helped each other out. There were no grumps, everyone was on time, and everyone was friendly. The food was very good and reflected the fact that Greek cooking is still homecooking and not really fancy or overly elaborate. The sites were very interesting, in particular the Greek Orthodox churches. We were able to get an over sense of the span of Greek culture and history, not just the classical era.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were no single "WOW" moments. However, I found the frescos in the Greek Orthodox churches most interesting, and we saw lots of churches. We followed all aspects of the itinerary, meeting on Monday evening with Colin and enjoying the get acquainted session with other members. This was our third, there were others ranging from first to fourteenth. I was surprised to see somewhat low ratings for hotels I considered to be very fine. Group food stops far beyond what we are used to. Weather perfect. First RS tour and will do again. Completely relaxing. Everything handled to perfection. No surprises except for good ones.

I had SO much fun!I enjoyed everyone on the tour. It was fun getting to know people from different parts of our country. We liked dining with different combinations of people. Our guide, Colin, was amazing!! He was knowable in everything (or so it seemed). He was good at preparing us for what we were to see. All locations, whether it was for lunch, dinner, rest stops, final stops, were pretty and had a unique feel.

Colin brought archaeology, history, the arts/architecture, landscape, and current events to bear on the tour, and wove them together skillfully and with engaging humor. Colin made the experience. The tour was well conceived, but his integrating knowledge, delivery, and humor was the overriding factor in making the tour outstanding. Plus, it was GREECE.

Superb guide Colin . Pleasurable review of Greek history, current affairs, Greek character, often with wry humor. He presented attractive options for free time whether hiking or eating. Also outstanding attention to detail whether options for departure or health problems or whatever plagued us. Other individual guides at archaeological sites were excellent also. Nice variety of other small towns, not of major historical importance, including gorgeous ports. Group melded by Colin.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The town of Mistras with so much Byzantine art. Rough terrain worth the trouble. Colin's interaction with beautiful old woman. Also towns of Kardamyli and Monemvasia. Best lodging: Nafplio built into rock walls and entry through Venetian gate. Several hikes up steep hillsides for the view. Dinners in Hydra. Town of Delphi and walk to top, then stay in hotel clinging to hillside. How to choose? Impossible!"

This tour was an incredible adventure. We not only visited some wonderful historic sites, we also saw some amazing natural sites and quaint villages. But, experiencing Greek food, culture and towns really made the trip special. Touring through the mountains and villages really helped us get a feel for the geography of the land and how it shaped the development of the country, its history and its culture. This tour really helped us appreciate and understand the Greek people and their land.

As a first time tour participant I have nothing to compare it to except travel on our own. This tour was exceptional. Our Tour boss, David made the trip very entertaining as well as educational. From details about the olive industry to the current Greek social environment we received a huge exposure to all things Greek we could not have experienced on our own. The venues, hotels, food, expert guides were second to none.. fantastic.

"There were lots of wow moments regarding tjhe sights. History, food etc. But I was impressed on the first day by the skill at which our tour director made our tour more enjoyable. He had the hotel move our breakfast up by 15 minutes avoiding the rush of another tour group staying at the hotel. Fine mix of art, history, geography, culture of Greece from ancient times to the present. The tour covered a huge amount of material in the context of a very enjoyable trek through Athens and western Greece. Who knew Greece had such mountains? We have not participated previously in a guided tour, but decided to go with this tour because of the complexity of Greece's geography and the large number of sites we wanted to visit. First tour with Rick Steves and would do it again in a heartbeat. Tour was amazingly organized. I so appreciated that we saw ruins, museums, historical sights...hit it hard & heavy for a few days then just in time when we needed it, a day off. Perfect timing. My goals were to see the ancient sites, visit a Greek island, and learn more about Greece and it's people. I achieved those goals and more. He also possesses a wonderful personality with a great sense of humor. The hotels were well situated in every city, town or village and quite comfortable. It was good to have a full size bus for only 24 travelers but, like the airlines, a little cramped for leg room. I absolutely loved the Peloponnese!

This was my first Rick Steves tour and i enjoyed it thoroughly. The best thing about the tour was the guide, Mr. Colin Clement. My travel is through the window of history and this tour took me to places that resonated in rich history. It was a stressful tour in that it involved a lot of climbing, but the end of the climb was always worth it.

Found Greece to be harder than I thought it would be. Very helpful that you gave us ratings for walking difficulty. Greece asks you to climb! While I was physically ready, there were some demanding days. So many cities in Europe are lovely places. Athens is not. I was not prepared for the amount of graffiti everywhere and found it sad. Once we had more information on the country, its current financial state, etc, it made it easier to simply "be" there and enjoy the experience and the locals.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing on top of the Acropolis. Knew what it was, saw photos in books, etc. but to be there and realize just what era of history and what it meant to western civilization was very humbling. And the new museum just made it better to understand the structure and history. A great addition to being in Athens."

We had taken a Smithsonian tour of Turkey two years ago and were convinced that your tour and guide could not possibly measure up to that experience. We were wrong. Colin and the careful planning evident in the whole tour were superior and surpassed our highest hopes.

"There were so many, this is hard to answer. If I were pressed to name just one, it might be glancing over during our last supper to see the Parthenon, which meant so much more to me after our two-week experience and a deepened appreciation of Greece and fondness for our fellow travelers."

Exceeded my high expectations. Great combination of classical sights, outstanding tour guide, and fun group of sociable fellow tour members. The weather was very comfortable starting mid May. The Greek guides at each site were very informative and easy to understand. Our guide, Colin, especially made the history come to life in his frequent talks on each era of Greek history from the Mycenaeans to the current period, and variety of the culture. Great memories!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many to just list one: 1. The citadel at Mycenae, including Tholos Tomb, 2. the Acropolis in Athens, 3. The picturesque Monemvasia Lower Town. 4. The National Archaeological Museum which houses the National treasury of art and artifacts from every era. The Museum itself deserves a return visit to Greece, and finally, 5. The Mountains, Gorges, windy roads, and hidden towns and villages with delightful friendly people."

This was a great tour, with a truly outstanding guide. David showed an exceptional commitment to making the tour enjoyable for everyone, and a deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Greece. Greece's "problems" turned out to be a total non-issue. The tour was very well balanced between historical sites, and laid back restful stops. The tour was the most physically demanding I have been on. There were many paths with slippery steps and random rocks. Most sites are on heights or mountains.

"The site at Delphi. The mountain side landscape was overwhelming in the evening."

The tour was well-planned from beginning to end. The group members "clicked" from the beginning and strong friendships were developed. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and welcomed questions from the group. Overall, this was the best land tour that I have taken!

"My favorite "wow" moment was walking through the arches at Olympia onto the 776 B.C. stadia and standing on the start line. I have been a runner for many years and standing there, imagining what it would have been like back then, was a definite "wow" moment."

This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We were hooked from the start. A great balance of planned and free time. Excellent guides. Well organized. Greece was wonderful - the people are so nice. Even more beautiful and interesting than I expected. Excellent itinerary. Wonderful restaurants. What more could you want! We had been told that we would enjoy the group as well as the trip. As I organized my photos, I realized I had so many more pictures of our new friends than from past trips/tours.

Loved seeing all the places that have been major players in history and literature over the centuries. So much more meaningful when you're standing in the midst of so much history instead of sitting in a classroom struggling to stay awake. Also loved having several Greek "myths" dispelled, such as my impression that the country is comprised of whitewashed buildings with blue domes (hey, it's 70% mountainous, whaddya know!) and that hummus is a Greek dish.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One, only one? Ergh. Cannot pick. The subtle points probably made the biggest impact, including the botanical walk in Kardamyli. And then there was that unknown dessert we bought at the bakery in Monemvasia; it turned out to be filled with chocolate mousse...."

Far beyond my expectations! This was my first Rick Steves tour and I must say: I am extremely impressed by the whole experience. The organization and the preparation were fine but, above all, the leader of this exploration: David Willett has proven to be just the perfect catalyst for a travel of discoveries and understanding. He is a great facilitator, extremely knowledgable, and attentive to the group as well as individual needs. His equanimity was remarkable.

The tour of Athens and Greece was everything and more than I thought it would be. The actual itinerary differs slightly from the itinerary on the web site which caused a bit of confusion, it might be a good idea to refresh the web site and tour book with the most recent itinerary. I was also disappointed that Rick Steves does not offer a Greek language book like for other languages. Also, the map included with the Athens tour book was disappoiting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "Wow" moment of the tour for me was to learn more detail about the more recent history of Greece and its' struggles throughout history. It was interesting to see how the country has evolved from the ancient cities and countries we know and hear about to all the other struggles it has under gone through the current economic crisis."

This tour was our second with Rick Steves - and another winner. An enthusiastic and knowledgable guide was in large part responsible for it being so enjoyable. David knows his history. He presented the country and its people with passion and respect. He also took care of our group, handling all the small details that cropped up with ease and good humor. He knew all the cities and towns well enough to suggest good places to eat, to shop, or just browse. We were never disappointed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Viewing the Parthenon with all the nightlights blazing was one of those rare travel moments, truly a stop and shake-your-head experience. The sitting itself is a wonder, and the sheer enormity of the structure boggles imagination. Also, the view of Athens from Mars Hill was beautiful. And another wowwwwwer."

Fabulous tour, fabulous guide, fabulous new friends. Oh, and we loved the country, too. We chose this tour because people we met on our Italian tour raved about this one. Now we know why, and we agree. It's a wonderful introduction to an under-considered country. In his programs and guidebook, Rick Steves talks about the famous Greek hospitality and it's evident every where you go.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Watching our Mystras guide, George, corral a boisterous middle school field trip and encourage them to decipher a fresco for all of us. With a few masterful questions, he opened their appreciation for the chapel as well as ours. It epitomized the RS experience, as other tours whizzed by ticking off the sites oblivious to what they were missing."

We've traveled extensively on our own, using the Rick Steves' guides for years. This year we decided to try our first tour. I was very pleased by the good times, amazing sights, knowledge gained, organization, delicious food, friendly travel companions, and an amazing tour guide, David who conveyed his love for Greece on a daily basis.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Acropolis and the Parthenon are definitely the "wow" moment of a trip to Greece, something I had always read about and wanted to see firsthand, but another "wow" moment was our stay in Hydra with the beautiful blue water, the buildings going up the narrow lanes and up into the hillside, the donkeys click clacking along as they delivered luggage and produce, the quiet streets with no cars or motorbikes, the delicious food, and the friendliness of the people."
