Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Greece

At 6 p.m. we'll meet at our hotel near Athens' pedestrian-friendly Plaka neighborhood for a "Welcome to Athens" get-together. Then we'll get oriented to our neighborhood and walk to a nearby restaurant where we can get acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Athens (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Athens' Acropolis

This morning we'll hike to the top of Athens' legendary Acropolis, where we'll take a walking tour of its 2,500-year-old Golden Age temples, dominated by the dramatic Parthenon. We'll then work our way down and tour the sleek new Acropolis Museum, custom built to showcase the amazing Parthenon sculptures. Your afternoon and evening are free for exploring Athens' marketplaces – the ancient Agora and the modern Plaka's labyrinth of inviting streets, squares, shops and cafés. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Greek Treasures and Delphi

This morning we'll tour Athens' impressive National Archaeological Museum, home to amazingly-preserved masterpieces in marble, bronze and gold. Then we'll leave the city and drive into the rugged countryside. In a dramatic setting on the flanks of 8,000-foot Mt. Parnassus we'll enjoy the fresh air and tour the mystical ruins of Delphi. Here, 25 centuries ago, the celebrated oracle allowed mere mortals to converse with the gods. This evening we'll have dinner together and sleep in the town of Delphi (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Peloponnese Mountains

Today we'll cross over the Gulf of Corinth to the Peloponnese Peninsula, where we'll temporarily leave our bus for a steep, scenic cog railway ride past the waterfalls and caves lining the narrow Vouraikos Gorge. From the end of the line, our bus will take us to our destination high up in the Menalon Mountains, where we'll enjoy dinner from a wood-fired oven. Sleep in or near Lagkadia (1 night). Train: 1 hr. Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 5: Ancient Olympia

This morning's winding mountain drive will take us to Olympia, site of the world's first Olympics, over 2,700 years ago. There we'll take a vivid walking tour of Olympia's ancient athletic venues, temples and museum, followed by lunch together. This afternoon's drive will take us along sweeping views of the Ionian Sea to the relaxed seaside village of Kardamyli, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Seaside Kardamyli

Kardamyli is an ideal place to enjoy a "vacation from your vacation." After some orientation by your guide, the day is all yours. You might hike along the ancient cobbled paths that wind their way through the nearby hills — or just relax on the beach — and end your day with a grilled seafood dinner and a view from the little taverna you've discovered. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 7: Mani Villages

We'll follow the coast to the isolated Mani Peninsula, home to generations-long clan wars, salt-of-the-earth villages and unique pyrgospita — tower houses. If Greece had a Tombstone and an O.K. Corral, here is where they'd be. After making a few off-the-beaten-path discoveries, we'll ride on to the dramatically-set medieval town of Monemvasia, where you'll be free for dinner. Sleep in mainland Monemvasia (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: Medieval Monemvasia

This morning we'll cross the causeway to tackle the massive rock that shoots straight up out of the blue-green Aegean Sea. After an orientation walk around Monemvasia's cozy little Lower Town, the rest of the day is free. You can wander more of the romantic walled town or take a swim in the Aegean. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Byzantine Mystras

Today we'll head up into the heart of the Peloponnese, where we'll tour the haunting ruins of the fortress town of Mystras and its still-standing group of Byzantine churches. After stopping in nearby Sparta for lunch, we'll continue north to our destination: the delightful, fortress-topped harbor town of Nafplio. We'll enjoy a Greek wine and ouzo tasting, and sleep in Nafplio (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: Mycenae and Nafplio

After breakfast we'll take a short drive to mysterious Mycenae, the fortified city founded by Perseus a thousand years before the Parthenon was built. We'll take a walking tour through the grand Lion Gate, along the "cyclopean" walls, and into a remarkably-domed tholos tomb. Then we'll return to Nafplio for a free afternoon to explore the colorful alleyways of the Old Town, ride a boat to the little castle island in the harbor, or hike up to enjoy a Venetian fortress view. We'll regroup for dinner together this evening. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Ancient Epidavros

This morning we'll drive to nearby Epidavros. Once the most famous healing center in the Mediterranean, today's star attraction is its ancient theater, large enough to accommodate 15,000 togas. We'll learn about the roots of drama here, before hopping a boat to the idyllic traffic-free island of Hydra, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: ½ hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 12: Island of Hydra

Your entire day and evening are free to soak up the whitewashed architecture as you wander Hydra's narrow streets and harbor promenade. You might swim at a nearby beach, hire a boat for the day, hike across the island, or try to make friends with a donkey. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 13: Return to Athens

This morning we'll take a ferry ride to Piraeus, where our bus will be waiting to take us back to our Athens hotel. Your afternoon is free to wander and shop through the Plaka, or explore other parts of this bustling city. Tonight we'll gaze at the floodlit Acropolis and enjoy a final dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Opa! Sleep in Athens (1 night). Boat: 2 hrs. Bus: 1 hr. Walking: light.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can easily catch a cab for the airport, or to nearby Piraeus where a fleet of ferries awaits to transport those with time to even more Greek destinations. Antio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Activity Level

Our tours are physically active! It’s an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Athens & the Heart of Greece in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily...

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (several blocks possible) and up stairways to reach your hotel; then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. Travel on a bus without a toilet (rest stops every two hours).
  5. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  6. Walk up to the Acropolis (10 minutes of stairs to the base, then more stairs to the top).
  7. At the Ancient Delphi site, walk up and down a steep and slippery gravel-marble path.

Greece was a wonderful tour! If you enjoy incredible scenery, history, mythology, ancient ruins, museums, cats, great food (and alot of it), good wine, great tour mates and the wonderful hospitality of the Greek people, this tour is for you. We happened to be visiting Greece during a difficult time due to the financial crisis but you'd never know it. The Greek people are so friendly and warm. Rick, you need to do a Greek Isles tour pronto!!

"I thought Delphi was amazing especially being there late in the day with the evening sun highlighting the ruins. Also having dinner in the harbor at Monemvasia at sunset and everything about Hydra were highlights."

This tour was very good and well organised. The evening get together and meet you dinner was very good as some people already knew each other and as I was the only Australian I found this a good opportunity to meet others. I found the accommodation was excellent and all meals provided were outstanding. However the first week of the tour was really a hectic and strenuous event. They were long days with a lot of physical activity in very hot conditions. The second week was a little more relaxed.

The tour exceeded all expectations, thanks to the comprehensive itinerary. Our tour guide, Anastasia, was friendly, open, and very knowledgeable. I learned more about Greek mythology from her than I ever did in high school or college. She made the trip special by organizing extras, such as the cooking class, wine tasting, and "happy hour". The Greek people were warm and welcoming, despite the crisis, and the countryside is astonishingly beautiful!

I had a great experience on the tour. Our tour guide Anastasia was knowledgeable and fun-loving. She kept us informed of the current political happenings in addition to ancient history and mythology that helped me embrace life in Greece. Our travel companions were great company. The country is beautiful, the history and antiquities amazing, eating was a delicious event each day and the waters are crystal blue.

It exceeded our expectations, which were high based on our experience with Rick Steves tour books in the past and the PBC program he hosts. The places we visited were well considered, the tour was thoughtfully organized, there was a great balance of organized activities and free time, we saw both classic tourist sites and lesser-known but enlivening backroads, and the guide was outstanding. We have some suggestions below, but we plan to do another Rick Steves tour in the future.

the Tour was superb!! Colin our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and his "bus chats" were great (you would want to sleep but his historical monologue was just too interesting to miss). Danae (apprentice) and George (driver) were also excellent. It was fabulous to have people who were from Greece provide their unique perspective. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with all three of our tour leaders. The food, sites we visited, places we stayed really outstanding!

Favorite "WOW" moment

I don't even know where to begin - it was a fabulous! Colin and Danae were wonderful, incredibly knowledgeable about the country and all the sites. The dinner and lunches were delicious, and felt authentically Greek. The pace of the tour was perfect, a nice balance of structured touring time and time to explore on your own.

This was my second Rick Steve Tour (did best of Italy in 2013 with Sarah) and reinforced what a fantastic tour your company puts on. While we did get to see the big historical sites, I really liked that we got out in the country and went to a lot of interesting places I never would have even known about had I gone on my own. We covered a lot of ground but Colin did a great job of balancing out our time so we never got overwhelmed or worn out even though we did most everything possible.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My daughter and I had a lot of discussion about that - it is hard to pin something down as the whole trip was great. The visits to Delphi Oracle and Olympia ruins were the biggest surprises as I had expected just a small temple for the Oracle & the original Track rather than extensive complexes and it was fascinating to learn how important they were to Greek culture."

We are a family of four (two teenage girls), traveling with my mother. We lucked out in that there were two other teenagers in the group. It made the tour so much more enjoyable for them! Angelos is the perfect guide [INVALID] scholar, comedian, mother hen [INVALID] and each stop was amazing. He helped us understand not only the history but also current events from the Greek standpoint. Fabian was helpful in putting things into the European context - they were a great team. It was an excellent trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "wow" moment was really a series of little things - our "little villa" in Kardamyli with French doors opening to a tiny balcony draped with bright pink bougainvillea and a lemon tree heavy with fruit begging to be picked or the owner's wife in Delphi who discussed her recipe for carrot jam with me at our breakfast and urged me not to forget to add the lemon juice. For me, it was not so much the amazing things we saw, but the places we visited and the people we met at each stop."

I thought the tour was well organized and informative. I think all the experience the company has had leading tours helped tremendously in terms of pacing. It was very important to have unstructured time - during each day, and sometimes for a whole day. Anastasia was an excellent guide. I felt in competent hands and it allowed me to relax and turn the responsibilities over to her. This is part of having a good vacation, esp. one on which you are on 'tour' with a group of people.

From the first gathering of fellow tour members, to the farewell dinner, this tour was superb! The tour members were a congenial group of interesting travelers, and we had great fun with each one! The choices of Peloponnese towns on our tour gave a variety of geography and community, to contrast with the city of Athens, bursting with reminders of architecture from long ago. The museums were interesting, and the use of local guides made the museum visits a very rich experience.

As always on Rick Steves tours, the group was a mix of interesting people ready for exploration. Our guide, Angelos, made this tour a lot of fun while being informative. The tour was a good mix of ruins sites, museums, villages and beaches. The little stops along the way made the tour! The accommodations were much nicer than I expected (based on past RS tours). The hoteliers were friendly and fun in the smaller towns (i.e. everywhere but Athens).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The farewell dinner Angelos arranged at a rooftop restaurant with a stunning view of the Acropolis at sunset was a WOW! This tour, as compared with others RS tours I've been on, had more "little wows" that I really enjoyed. Stopping for Greek coffee and experiencing a Greek memorial celebration, Greek bakeries along the way, the train, the ski town, the Gates of Hades beach, the cooking demonstration, the Greek dancing, to name a few!"

My wife and I had a great trip. Saw what we wanted to, did what we wanted to, made new friends, enjoyed ourselves morning, noon and night. Had lots of character added from our guide and bus driver. Got helpful hints on activities and places either as a group or one on one. Enjoyed all of the local guides, very pleasant, fun and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the hotels and restaurants, especially the family owned and out of the way ones. The hotel in Napflio and the 3 brothers running it were great.

"I would say our last evening together. We had a great view of the Acropolis, had great food, sharing it with the friends we had met and shared so much with over the previous two weeks, our "Renaissance Man" guide Angelos being brought to tears as we thanked him for the fun we had and knowledge we gained, then playing music for us after we had been begging him to for the last 10 days,a good poem from asst guide Stefanie also.Just a great night and conclusion."

Angelos set the atmosphere for a relaxed though strenuous travel through Greece. From the outset our group was friendly and warm, making it a point to get to know everyone; there were no 'clicks' or small groups that 'hung out together'. Angelos is knowledgeable and offered insight to Greece's history, politics and what it's like to live in Greece today, contending with the economy and the EU.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The farewell dinner; dining with a rooftop view of the Acropolis where our tour began. We watched a beautiful sunset and were so busy posing for photos with the wonderful backdrop that many of us could not enjoy the delicious meal that was served. When the time came to say goodbye we lingered over hugs and parting farewells not wanting to leave. Oh, and I must mention our guide's serenading us on the accordion. Angelos' talent is astounding!"

The Greece tour has become one of my favorites thus far of the nine I've done. Greece far exceeded my expectations...the people were warm and friendly and very helpful. I was impressed with the young children's knowledge of English. We traveled with a great group of fellow travelers which made the trip more enjoyable. Most of the group had completed multiple RS tours so they understood what it took to make the tour pleasurable for everyone. The local guides were among the best we've had.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Faye, our Athens local guide, brought history to life in a way I've never experienced before...I'll never look at a clay pot the same way again. The reactions of the people when you took the time to learn a few words of their language. The sun rise from our hotel room in Monemvasia and the sunset from the harbor in Hydra. Hiking, swimming, and the scenery straight out of travel magazines. Angelos' catch phrase "too easy" made me smile. Yogurt with honey!"

The entire tour was fabulous, thanks to the excellence, talents and "Greekiness" of Angelos, our guide. I visited many parts of Greece years ago (mainland and islands)--I wanted to go back. I particularly wanted to see the Peloponnese, which I had never visited. I wanted a Greek experience in the broadest and fullest sense and I got just that! It was a very happy trip. The accomodation, the innovative "surprise " entertainment venues, the really nice bus, the superb bus driver-epharisto poli!

This trip was fabulous. It was our fourth Rick Steves trip and the best so far. All our other tours were good, but the guide on our Greek tour was so exceptional that the group really clicked from the beginning and grew stronger as the tour went on.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The final group dinner in Athens, at the top of a chic hotel, with a night-time view of the illuminated Acropolis, was truly amazing. The food was wonderful, the wine flowed non-stop, and the conversation sizzled. Our guide, Angelos, surprised us by picking up an accordian and playing a medley of snappy tunes. Thanks to Angelos and everybody in the group for such a memorable last night together!"

This was a fantastic tour! I was sad when it ended. Our guide and our tour group were amazing and we all became friends right from the start. The places we went and the things we saw exceeded my expectations. There was a good balance between seeing the sights with the group and our free time. I looked forward to every day and what was in store for us. The bus rides were fun and our bus driver, Giorgio, was amazing! I would love to go to Greece again, and even on this tour again!

"There are so many! Just seeing all the sights that I had heard of and seen In pictures and thinking, "I'm actually here!" Being up in the mountains at Delphi and taking in the beautiful scenery and fantastic ruins, being in Olympia and running where the first Olympians ran, being up at the Acropolis and then seeing it all lit up at night, all the quaint beach towns and beautiful clear turquoise water, Hydra, and I could go on and on! This was truly an outstanding tour...our 14th travel experience with RS and it ranks as one of the very best. Blending museum experiences with visits to archaeological sites (Acropolis, Olympia, Delphi, Mystras, Mycenae, and Epidavros) made history come alive. In visiting an archaeological site and trying to make sense of historical remains, it's so important to have had the guidance and knowledge that Colin and the local guides provided. Everything about this tour was exceptional!

Favorite "WOW" moment

""Wow" actually came out of my mouth when we walked into the tholos tomb at Mycenae! But, there were many other special "wows" on this trip, not least of which was our guide, Colin, who was extraordinarily knowledgeable and skilled. Many thanks to our fellow travelers...one of the best groups ever! Other "wows": terrific meals, Hydra, Kardamyli, Monemvasia, dinner at a small neighborhood restaurant in Nafplio with local dancers/musicians, local guide George singing at Mystras, and many more."

This was our seventh Rick Steves tour and it was one of the best - a perfect combination of history, culture, art and relaxation, led by an outstanding guide. The first few days were rather exhausting since we had to get up early to make the most of our time in Athens. There was a lot of walking, climbing and standing - especially visiting two museums. Fortunately, the trip became more relaxing once we were out of the big city. There seemed to be more free time on this tour which we appreciated.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"No doubt it was visiting the Acropolis. It ranks right up there with the Colosseum in Rome and the Eiffel Tower as "I can't believe I'm really here" moments. There were other "wow" moments, of course - especially Kardamyli and Monemvasia. What a beautiful country."

My first trip to Europe, to help celebrate my brother and sister in laws 30th anniversary. Everything exceeded my expectations. If you want to see a country in 14 days, this is the way to go. It was well planned out and every stop was effortless. It left me yearning for more travel. I would of skipped Sparta, a dirty city with no interests to me. Three nights in the city center of Athens was a bit much for me, but I don't know what the alternatives would be near to the airport.

The tour exceeded my expectations. I usually travel as an independent traveler, but chose to take this tour because of the lack of extensive rail options, the limited bus options, and the desire to not have to deal with driving a rental car with great differences in language and alphabet from English. The tour leader, the bus driver, and all the other tour members made the experience very special and I believe that we all had a great time.

"I usually don't have much experience with Greek food and I'm not a fish fanatic, but all the food provided as part of the tour (both lunches and dinners) were excellent. The sightseeing and food in Greece were spectacular. The Greek people were extremely friendly and accommodating. We were initially hesitant to do tours out of concern that we would have no free time to explore on our own, but this tour gave us a good balance of guided tours/walks, and time to do such exploration on our own and with congenial companions. Our overall tour experience was outstanding. It was our first tour with an organized group, and we look forward to doing more Rick Steves Tours in the future.

"There were so many.... Most memorable for Carl was when a local tour guide started chanting the hymns painted on the walls of a Byzantine church in Mythos. For Debbie it was seeing and being at the Acropolis and Parthenon. Another 'wow' moment for both of us came after a small group of us used a free afternoon to hike out to the far side of 'The Rock' at Monemvasia, where we simply sat and enjoyed the companionship of new found friends and the view of the Myrtoan Sea."

This was my 2nd Rick Steves tour and it far surpassed any expectations I had. I felt that not only did we experience the "obvious" attractions in Greece, we went to so many other absolutely beautiful, enriching places - especially all the coastal towns. These were extremely delightful, relaxing, beautiful, peaceful and full of history. The scenic mountainous terrain of the Peloponnese (alive with wildflowers this time of year - BIG BONUS!) was definitely a surprise!

"With my free afternoon in Monemvasia, I joined 4 others to hike around the island, to the farthest point possible. It felt like the 5 of us had the island to ourselves. None of us wanted to leave the quiet, the calm, the ever-so-blue water, the total beauty of the moments there. Well planned out travel mostly through rural Greece. Very well thought out itinerary incorporating local holidays to minimize lost time and experiences. Tour leader and his assistant were exceptionally well versed in the nuances of the country and knew the local overnight locations like the back of their collective hands. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour, our 7th with ETBD. The people, the history, the countryside, the food, our guide, and all our tour members made for a truly enjoyable two weeks. To stay away from visiting Greece because of their economic problems is not a wise decision. My biggest impression of the Greeks is that, despite their problems (and they've had many throughout history), they will survive. Greece is one of the most enjoyable places I've visited. Did I mention the food?

This was my first Rick Steves tour and I now understand why some in our group taken multiple tours. The program for our two weeks in Greece was superbly planned to show us the highlights of Greece, help us gain a fuller understanding of the country and the people, and to help us feel comfortable exploring on our own wherever we went. Our guide and the Greek guides were enthusiastic and knowledgable. I enjoyed the special events, too--olive tasting, wine tasting and Greek dancing.

"It's hard to choose one moment. It's such a personal matter. But for me visiting Delphi was my favorite day. Our guide Christine made Delphi so real and meaningful. The setting up against the mountains with a view down to the sea amid poplar trees really put me back in the time the ruins of the temples, the theater and the stadium represented when men consulted the oracle there. Our guide David was spectacular. The tour group was a complete pleasure to travel with, everyone kind and companionable. Our tour experience was outstanding in every regard. The itinerary balanced the Athens city experience with the rustic charm and historical interest of a part of the world off the radar of too many travelers. Logistically, every part of the trip went off like clockwork, just like the other two Rick Steves tours we have been a part of. Best of all, David provided knowledgeable, enthusiastic leadership, allowing the group to bond early and form real friendships.

"My extended "wow" moment was our time on the Mani Peninsula. In particular, the walk above the town of Kardamyli, through Old Kardamyli to the church of Agia Sophia, was a stand-out experience. The Mani Peninsula is, so far, still off the mainstream tourist path and maintains its authenticity."

I have taken many Rick Steves tours, and this was one of the very best. I knew Greece would be beautiful and its ancient history facinating, but this tour far exceeded my expectations. Much of this was due to our excellent guide, David. Our driver, Georgios, was also fantastic. Also great accommodations, food and new friends.

"Touring Mystra on Easter was joyful. At the end of the tour, we were allowed to view wares made by the nuns. We could buy items which helped nuns with income and to support some local families. I looked at a couple of items and I left a donation. Our tour guide that day tapped me on the back after I had left and gave me a gift. It was an item made by the nuns. He told me the sister wanted me to have the item. I ran back, gave her my hand and she hugged me hard and long. Emotional for me."

The experience exceeded my expectations of visiting ancient sites for a couple of hours and then moving on to the next. David tied the history, culture and geography of Greece together with his knowledge, wit and personal experience. I must say I "learned" and enjoyed it, not easy for an old, opinionated guy!

What can I say other that it was wonderful tour experience. Mr. Willett set the tone with his relaxed manner, and this particular group was just wonderful. Everybody worked together to make it a pleasant experience. Mr. Willett was very knowledgeable about every section of Greece that we drove through, or stayed in. He made everyone feel comfortable on the tour, especially me.

My overall experience was good. Athens is a little dirty. Greece is in a depressed economy and in places it really shows. Outside of Athens the countryside is very pretty and the people are friendly. Greece is one big photo op with all the old villages the ruins and especially this time of year when the wild flowers are in bloom.

Couldn't possibly do this in 500 characters. The whole trip was truly magical. David made Western Civilization come alive; best tour guide ever, as were the guides at the various sites we visited. Best part was the great group of people on the trip. Before this trip, I didn't like guided tours--have traveled all over Europe with just the Rick Steves books--but this experience made me a believer. This was a tour of a lifetime. From start to finish I enjoyed every aspect of Athens and the Heart of Greece. The ancient ruins, museums, historic landmarks, local guides, small villages, boutique hotels, meals, springtime wildflowers, members of our group, and of course our tour guide, David, made this a spectacular ETBD experience. Possibly the best trip of our lives because of a top-notched guide and a varied and important itinerary. Accommodations, food, bus, driver& stops were excellent & group fellow members were congenial, interesting & fun. The unexpected cold, wet and blustery weather was the only aspect of the trip that was a disappointment, which of course no one could control, but our guide modified plans when able, and the group handled it well.

Fantastic experience. Tour was well formulated and executed. We had a great time and found Colin and Angelos very knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen to and be with. I hadn't done much preparation ahead of the tour (other than packing and learning a few words of Greek) so I didn't have expectations other than to know that since we were on a Rick Steve's tour, we'd be in good hands. And we were! The sights were tremendous, the guides were great, the hotels were interesting, towns were fun, the meals were fantastic but mostly the group of people on this tour were just a lot of fun!

"Disclaimer: 3 wks before the trip I had a case of flu (9 feverish days) that severely depleted my energy, then caught a 2nd flu-bug the 1st day of the tour that lasted 7-8 days, 1/2 the tour (though I did not miss any event). Since 2012 I have also toured Turkey, taught a month in China, toured India last year (3 wks), and comparatively, this tour lacked the exciting, exotic highlights. I realize my expectations were different from the tour, but know others enjoyed it greatly."

It was absolutely wonderful, and my husband and I have been passing on our praise for the tour to friends and family. I am not a historian, but now have a clearer understanding of the relationships between Greece and the Ottomans, Greece and the Italian city states over the centuries as well as the fragmented nature of the country practically till modern times.

"My personal favorite moment was when we walked through the ruins of the ancient healing center of Epidavros, where we viewed private rooms, baths, entertainment and sports competition areas including the 17,000 seat amphitheatre. "After having been an athlete with degrees in physical education, visiting the ruins of Olympia and actually being able to visualize the importance of the olympics to the Greeks (before Romans) kind of raised the hair on my arms - even though I am a woman. Kind of disappointed in the museum bookstore that did not have a historical book on the games, especially in English."

The tour , starting in Athens was an amazing experience. The extremely knowledgeable Guide, David, as well as the sight guides, gave all of the sights much more meaning than one would experience without their input vast knowledge. Their lively and expressive descriptions,at the sites, in the towns and in the countryside brought meaning and life to what could have been a less memorable tour. Fabulous! The sites were great, the food was fantastic, and we got to travel with an amazing group of people. The amount of free time thrown in was great, and if you needed advice on what to do our guide was always there to provide it. I'm really into history, and there is so much of it in Greece, that there was never a dull moment. The people were friendly and very helpful. I loved every minute of it, and would take another RS tour in a heartbeat.

David was an excellent guide for all parts of our trip which made it the best tour group ever. The tours mix of history and scenic relaxing stops was perfect. I was very impressed with David's knowledge and appreciated the time he spent telling us about the native plants and history of Greece. Superb guide Colin . Pleasurable review of Greek history, current affairs, Greek character, often with wry humor. He presented attractive options for free time whether hiking or eating. Also outstanding attention to detail whether options for departure or health problems or whatever plagued us. Other individual guides at archaeological sites were excellent also. Nice variety of other small towns, not of major historical importance, including gorgeous ports. Group melded by Colin.

This tour was an incredible adventure. We not only visited some wonderful historic sites, we also saw some amazing natural sites and quaint villages. We have not participated previously in a guided tour, but decided to go with this tour because of the complexity of Greece's geography and the large number of sites we wanted to visit. Fine mix of art, history, geography, culture of Greece from ancient times to the present. Found Greece to be harder than I thought it would be. Very helpful that you gave us ratings for walking difficulty. Greece asks you to climb! While I was physically ready, there were some demanding days. So many cities in Europe are lovely places. Athens is not. I was not prepared for the amount of graffiti everywhere and found it sad. Once we had more information on the country, its current financial state, etc, it made it easier to simply "be" there and enjoy the experience and the locals.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing on top of the Acropolis. Knew what it was, saw photos in books, etc. but to be there and realize just what era of history and what it meant to western civilization was very humbling. And the new museum just made it better to understand the structure and history. A great addition to being in Athens."
