Ireland 2012 Guidebook

Best and worst accommodations:

Best: Boulevard Guesthouse, Westport, 2011 guide, page 308
Why: Our room was quiet & squeaky clean, the B&B very charming and its location excellent. More importantly, Sadie & John Moran were the "people" highlight of our trip! We rolled in unannounced @6pm and within 10 minutes felt like we'd known them forever. They're funny, friendly, proud of their heritage and country, helpful above & beyond. Their recommendations on dining, pubs, sights, directions, etc. were outstanding. We were treated more like family than customers. We will recommend their B&B to our friends and family. They are a couple that we will personally stay in touch with.

Joe & Kathleen Kelly in Jasper, GA USA 01/27/2012

Best: Twin Peaks in Doolin
Why: Senead is the daughter of Gus O'Connor (the man who created O'Connor's Pub) is a great help to tell the guest what's not to miss in the area.

ann fessler in gig harbor, wa, WA USA 12/21/2011

Best: Butler Court, Kilkenny, 2011 guide, page 134
Why: Yvonne, your hostess (and owner), is delightful and SO VERY HELPFUL! She's always available and has a wonderful personality. Her husband, John, is also very nice but Yvonne is generally more visible. The rooms are beautiful, clean, simple, and very reasonable. Perfect location in Kilkenny.

Worst: Grey Gables, Ennis, 2011 guide, p.261
Why: Nothing bad, nothing good. Blah B&B, blah owner. I realize the food is different in other countries, but ordered poached eggs the next morning and they were just plopped on a plate - no toast underneath, and they weren't drained well enough so water ran all over the plate. I'd had them elsewhere in Ireland and they were always served with toast.

Maureen in Tempe, AZ USA 10/22/2011

Best: Chart House in Kinsale, Old Ground Hotel in Ennis
Why: Sadly we were the last customers of the Chart House owners Billy and Mary O'Conner, who are closing their doors and taking a break. The B&B experience and their local knowledge and help was fantastic! The Old Ground in Ennis is the perfect location, easy to find without a map, and had everything.

Worst: Meadowlands
Why: Bad food, bad smells, and lack of internet access. It seems as if the management was trying to skimp on things. The staff was friendly and the rooms nice so it wasn't a nightmare experience, just not the usual Rick Steves experience.

William Gamble in Culver City, CA USA 10/11/2011

Best: Pinecrest B&B in Kilkenny
Why: The host and hostess were charming; our room was clean and spacious; the Irish breakfast was delicious; the price was reasonable; and the location was desirable--a short walk into town.

Donna Murphy in Fairfax, VA USA 10/10/2011

Best: Milestone House - Dingle
Why: Wonderful hosts and good location.

Peter in Vancouver, Canada 10/06/2011

Best: San Antonio B&B in Kinsale
Why: We loved this 5-room B&B. Jimmy Conron went out of his way to accomodate our interests in Kinsale, and his breakfasts are simply the best. Location is great too.

John H. Lifland MD in Bridgewater, NJ USA 10/04/2011

Best: O'Neills in Dingle
Why: location, location, location

martha Aguiar in CAMPTON, NH USA 10/03/2011

Best: Greenmount B&B Dingle
Why: Large, lovely room with beautiful view. Breakfast room had great views of the harbor and town and also our favorite breakfast.

Worst: Old Presbytery in Kinsale
Why: We had a small attic room 4 flights up and could not stand up straight over the bathroom sink. It had charm but was overpriced.

Florence & Patrick in San Pedro , CA USA 10/01/2011

Best: Butler Court in Kilkenny
Why: the owners were so nice and when we walked up to check in she knew my name, where do you find that in America

Worst: Ramada in Portrush
Why: didn't have time to find a B & B so we stayed at the Ramada. It was nice but too much like a large hotel, not very friendly

Jill Sletten in Saint Paul, MN USA 09/27/2011

Best: Tie, the Anchorage in Kinsale and the Bambury Gueast house in Dingle
Why: Both very clean, cosy, comfortable. Close to town- within two blocks, owners of each so very friendly and hospitable. I'd recommend them to all my friends. The very best breakfast was the Bambury guest house in Dingle, everyone we met there agreed.

Paddy Munro in Vancouver, B. Canada 08/25/2011

Best: Moriarty's Farmhouse B&B
Why: Brid & Ted Moriarty give you a warm welcome to their farmhouse with tea, coffee, and fresh baked scones. Their B&B rooms are nice, tidy, and well maintained. The room views overlook the farm and Ventry bay. Brid & Ted make a delicious, top-quality, real-Irish breakfast. We will definitely take advantage of their hospitality on our next trip to Dingle!

Mike Rogers in Warner Robins, GA USA 08/18/2011

Best: Shelleven House, Bangor
Why: The town of Bangor is an easy train ride away from Belfast. Shelleven House is a ten minute walk to the station, the breakfasts were generous and tasty.

tami dairiki in scottsdale, az USA 08/15/2011

Best: Sraid Eoin House - Dingle
Why: Kathleen and Maurice O'Connor were very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. The room was large and very clean. The breakfast was delicious.

Mark Draganescu in Chalfont, PA USA 08/10/2011

Best: Beach Cove B&B
Why: Though we only stayed one night, the Beach Cove was wonderful. The food was the best we had all trip, the host was very friendly and helpful, the room was lovely, and wandering around the beach right in front of the house was a great way to relax.

Eilis O'Neal in Tulsa, OK USA 08/05/2011

Best: Towerview B&B - Dingle
Why: Towerview is really cute, with a couple of nice sitting rooms and a beautiful breakfast room overlooking a piece of Dingle bay and of course the Tower (off in the distance). The mini farm had a couple of really cute dogs, ducks, chickens, goats, and sheep. Whenever my daughter had a chance to escape, we knew we could find her playing with one of the dogs or feeding the sheep with some kitchen scraps given to her by Mary.

Mary and her staff are incredibly friendly and they really made us feel at home. Our group was 3 adults, a teenager, and a baby. Tower View has a large quad bedroom with a huge bathroom that was very clean and accommodated us nicely.

Breakfast was also incredible. The Irish version had 2 eggs, 2 rashers, 2 bangers, Black and White Irish Pudding. Oh... and get this. The eggs are freshly laid from her hens each morning! The color of the yolks was deep yellow and they tasted amazing.

Worst: Carraig Beag B&B - Galway / Club House Hotel - Kilkenny
Why: CB - The place was beautiful and the beds and rooms were very comfortable. The hotel, being in Salthill, is pretty far from Galway action. The real problem here, though, lied with the owner, Catherine. We spent 4 nights and about $1000 here and never really felt welcomed. Because we had a baby with us, she forced us to throw our own garbage in the dumpster....a first for me. She never made the beds in our daughters room. She was rude to our auPair. There was no high-chair for the baby so we had to hold him during breakfast and of course he ended up breaking a plate. After I accepted responsibility and agreed to pay for the plate, she embarrassed my wife in front of some other guests by going into a really creepy almost hysterical conversation with my 9-month old, telling him over and over again that she didn't blame him and that it's always the bad parents that are at fault. I just think she is burned out and maybe should consider retirement.

CH - This Hotel is well located in the heart of Killkenny and has a beautiful pub. The problem here lies mainly in the invasive moldy smell throughout the hotel. It was so bad in our room that we had to leave our window open at all times. Even so I had to take allergy pills daily and when we checked out I felt a little asthmatic.

Brian Furlong in Chicago, IL USA 08/04/2011

Best: Brook Cottage
Why: Pleasant, quiet, wonderful hosts, good breakfast

Worst: Old Ground Hotel
Why: Emphasis on old, loud, overpriced

Gregory in Las Vegas, NV USA 07/30/2011

Best: Cill Bhreac House in Dingle
Why: Angela was so helpful and friendly. She would go out of her way to ensure you're enjoying your stay.

Nathan Scott in Santa, CA USA 07/06/2011

Best: Pinecrest B&B, Kilkenny
Why: It was the most quiet place to spend the night. There are many trees in front of the house, other than songbirds in the morning, there was not a sound to disturb your sleep.

Pitim in Chicago, Il USA 07/04/2011

Best: Cloisters B & B in Kinsale
Why: This was the best B & B I stayed in during my trip. The owners were so friendly, accomodating, and welcoming. The room was well-appointed and very clean. The breakfast was excellent with many choices.

Sharon in Indianapolis, IN USA 07/03/2011

Best: Ardawn House, Galway and Butler Court, Kilkenny
Why: Both had great, friendly staff, clean rooms and good breakfasts.

Worst: Travelodge, Derry and Alpine Guesthouse, Dingle
Why: The travelodge was a nightmare to find and parking in the garage next door was over $70. We almost had a heartattack when we saw the charge on our credit card, but you have no choice if you plan to stay there. Alpine was not very clean, the staff were not very friendly and the breakfast was not very good. Of all the B & Bs in Dingle, I'm sure you could find better.

Lisa Moyer in Pine Grove, PA USA 06/30/2011

Best: Dingle - Castlewood House; Kinsale - Old Presbytery
Why: Dingle – spent two nights at the Castlewood House with an easy walk into the heart of town. We cannot say enough about this place and Helen and Brian who run it!! Fine people, first class establishment, and we highly recommend it. We chose a Junior Suite (upstairs corner) to have some extra room and the suite was wonderful with great views over the water. Our breakfasts there were great. Kinsale - one night here at Old Presbytery - a wonderful B&B as you described in your book; Noreen and Philip are fine people and their place is great – comfortable room and a fine breakfast. We chose the room with a balcony overlooking the town and enjoyed our views there as well.

Susan and Don in Columbia, SC USA 06/09/2011

Best: Milestone--Dingle
Why: You will read much on this site about great breakfasts, comfy rooms, warm hospitality, convenient locations, etc. etc. Many wonderful B&Bs have these. But I doubt you'll find hosts who will take the personal interest in your visit that Barbara and Michael do. They LISTEN to what you're looking for before they suggest places to see. And they will honestly tell you where NOT to eat, as well as providing suggestions for memorable meals. (Ignore this advice at your peril!) You will not go wrong staying here.

Ron in Cedar Mountain, NC USA 05/30/2011

Best: None
Why: We found none of the recommendations to be helpful. We stayed at wonderful places in Cork City (not in the book), Dingle, Doolin, Galway, and Dublin on our own that were less expensive with superb hosts.

Paul Porwoll in Johns Island, SC USA 05/26/2011

Best: Heaton's in Dingle, Joys Rockside in Cashel
Why: Heatons Guesthouse: Classy from start to finish - our best stay in Ireland. Quiet yet close to town, helpful and gracious owners, large and very comfortable and immaculate room, lovely waterfront view, sensational food (breakfast and dinner - we booked a 2 night + dinner package and were glad), free computer to use in the main lounge area. Would return in a heartbeat. Joys at Cashel: Lovely, warm greeting - felt as if I was Joan Joy's best friend arrived for a visit. Simple furnishings but a location that can't be beat for visiting the rock.

Worst: Chart House, Kinsale
Why: Did not match the "grand, sumptuous doubles" description in the guidebook. Very cramped room with overly-large antiques limiting space, quite chilly in early May and no heat in the room (3 wool blankets on our bed were our first hint), street parking only, a rushed greeting on arrival. Signs everywhere admonishing guests on their expected behavior. An open storage cabinet on the stairway for linens & toilet paper that never was closed. The Georgian house is pretty, breakfast was fine, the location is good - but coming from lovely Heatons in Dingle, this was quite a letdown. Not "top end in every respect" as the guide indicated. Would not recommend or stay there again.

Chris in Cedar Point, NC USA 05/17/2011

Best: Rick's suggestions are the best
Why: He never fails to do his homework

Worst: The Military road was long and ponderous...we got off --pretty quick....
Why: With all the Gorgeous sights in Ireland why waste time on a moonscape.... We were expecting something like the Dartmoor.. The Military road was depressing....Yukkkk.. We left Powerscourt which was magnificent and drove some of the Military road...which became a bummer very fast.. Skip this...

Chris Canning in Boca Raton, , FL USA 05/13/2011

Best: Doolin Activity Lodge
Why: Big clean rooms, great breakfasts, lovely hosts.

Worst: None
Why: All recommendations were good but Doolin was our favourite.

Lynsay Allesso in New York, NY USA 05/10/2011

Best: The Milestone Inn
Why: Barbara & Michael Carroll truly know what they are doing. With a quick overnight visit and no time to waste, their guidance and hospitality was most welcome. They provided us with a wonderful map, recommended outstanding restaurants and pubs and could not have been more friendly. We would return in a minute!

Sandra Hart in Cincinnati, OH USA 03/27/2011

Best: The Olde Bakery B&B (Kinsale); Eileen Collins Kirrary B&B (Dingle)
Why: Both wonderful places--exactly what you hope for from a B&B. Cozy, warm, welcoming, homey, comfortable. Highly recommended.

JoAnna Frederick in Austin, TX USA 03/14/2011

Best: Doolin Activity Lodge
Why: While probably the least personal of the B&B's where we stayed, this was a welcome mid-trip respite with spacious rooms, kitchenette, good breakfast, and a much needed overnight laundry service for 10 euros a load.

Worst: None
Why: All of our accommodations were fine, and most recommended by Steve. We did find in booking as we went along, often in the morning, that we did not have our first choice of B&B or room, but we had no bad experiences.

Joyce in Toledo, Oh USA 02/27/2011

Best: Trinity Capital Hotel in Dublin
Why: Perfect location near Trinity College, unique decor, helpful staff and reasonable rates.

Lyn in San Diego, CA USA 11/23/2010

Best: Bulter Court, Kilkenny
Why: Yvonne and John were rockstars. We loved our room and enjoyed doing our own continental breakfast in our room at our own pace. Also loved recs for Alpine Lodge in Dingle.

Heather O in Washington, DC USA 10/25/2010

Best: The Olde Bakery B&B
Why: Two of the most important reasons to go to any bed and breakfast - the hosts. Tom and Chrissie are now considered friends of our entire group. They also had the best breakfast.

Patty Bush in Independence, Mo USA 10/25/2010

Best: Tie Water's Edge in Kenmare and Half Door in Doolin
Why: Kenmare - location, lovely rooms, hostess. Half Door - best B&B food we had, very cozy.

Worst: Kellihers Ballygean House
Why: It wasn't bad, and the owners are super sweet, but plastic on the pillows, poorly fitting sheets and a relatively poor breakfast made me think I'd perfer something else.

Mary Schroeder in Seattle, WA USA 10/23/2010

Best: Amarach B8B was a great discovery
Why: The Brown family runs this light and hospitable B&B. We stayed in two small but cozy rooms at top of stairs, with newly tiled baths and skylights overlooking Kinsale. 35-45 euros per person. Within walking distance of laundry, pubs, ATM, tourist center, etc. Graham welcomed us at 9:30pm at night with no reservation! His breakfast "fry" is very tasty and wife Jacky and son Cameron are beautiful. Located at top of "The Glen" as you enter town from Cork. We highly recommend you look them up.

Carol Ann Parker in San Jose, CA USA 09/26/2010

Best: We liked them all!
Why: Club Hotel - Kilkenny Hawthorne House - Kenmare Grey Gables - Ennis Asgard - Galway Highfield House - Trim Harding Hotel - Dublin

Not in your book but we enjoyed: Amarach B&B - Kinsale O'Flaherty B&B(Dingle)- owned by Angela O'Flaherty

Carol Ann Parker in San Jose, CA USA 09/26/2010

Best: O'Brien's Cashel Lodge and White Lodge Trim B&B
Why: Best hostel/lodge was definitely hands down no argument by far O'Brien's Cashel Lodge, and the best B&B was White Lodge in Trim. Cashel Lodge was our most expensive hostel/dorm bed, but it was super comfy and I did not wake up once the whole night... I really thought I was sleeping in my own bed, it was that comfy! And White Lodge was super unpretentious and the triple room and ensuite bathroom was spacious and clean and warm. The hosts were all very nice, but the hosts for these two places were exceptionally lovely and very welcoming of us, even when we arrived at 9pm after a looong drive. There are so many other good things about these two places, I just can't list them all, so you'll just have to trust me and try them out when you visit Cashel and Trim!

Worst: Rainbow Hostel, Harbour Nights B&B
Why: These places aren't bad at all, just at the bottom of my list. It was loud at Rainbow Hostel (which isn't recommended by Rick Steves' guidebook, but was in Let's Go Ireland), but I guess that's not really the hostel's fault; otherwise, it was okay. And of the 2 B&B's we stayed in, Harbour Nights wasn't as good because the owner was a bit cold to us (but maybe she was just having a very busy day), and the sheets were very thin and there were not enough extra blankets, so we were freezing during the night! But these are still GOOD places and I would still recommend them to people.

Pearl in Pleasanton, CA USA 09/18/2010

Best: Butler Court Kilkenny
Why: The rooms were clean and well maintained. The continental breakfast was great. Yvonne and John were very nice hosts.

Jo Anne Vaughn in Colorado Springs, CO USA 09/16/2010

Best: Hideout Hostel, Dingle
Why: Friendly staff. Excellent double rooms. Very good breakfast arrangements.

John Vogt in Ft. Collins, CO USA 09/09/2010

Best: Hawthorne House, Kenmare, Old Ground, Ennis
Why: Noel and Mary were the finest hosts you could ask for. Great breakfast. Olde Ground was quaint, yet topshelf.

Worst: Olde Ground
Why: Parking lot was an issue.

Dan Doll in Lincroft, NJ USA 08/18/2010

Best: Greenount in Dingle was the best and worst at the same time.
Why: It is a beautiful setting overlooking the Dingle Bay. Accomodations are lovely. Breakfast was fabulous. Mary, the propietor's wife was a fabulous baker.

Worst: Greenmount is also the worst.
Why: The proprietor, John, was the rudest person we met on our trip and does not live up to the image of the Irish being friendly. We left the patio door open on the second floor when we went out for dinner. Upon returning, we couldn't reopen the door to get a cross breeze for the rest of the evening. When we called to ask John for assistance, he lecutred one of our companions and told them he wouldn't give us the key to open the door. Also, as he was pulling into his drive at such a fast speed, he almost hit one of our companions. Thirdly, when asked where the hairdryer was located, he was very curt and short with another companion. Even though the B&B was lovely, we would not recommend it because of his attitude toward his customers.

The only other comment we have is in reference to Cois Cuain in Kinvarra. Mary Walsh is extraordinarily friendly. Outside was cute. Flowers all around. However, when using the bathroom, we felt it was not very clean. Used shampoo and conditioner bottles around; thin towels. Could have been cleaner.

Miriam Ting in Santa Cruz, Ca USA 08/08/2010

Best: Tower View B&B, Dingle
Why: Sparkling clean, very comfortable, serenely quiet, wonderful views, easy walking distance to town, fine breakfast, free WiFi, and the nicest B&B owners ever! After 9 nights, I didn't want to leave but had to due to other plans. Three days later, I changed plans and went back to Tower View! I owe a huge thanks to owners Mary & Robbie Griffin, along with Maeve at breakfast, and Penny (world's sweetest border collie) for their friendship, kindness, and concern when I learned of a serious family matter back in the US. This is a very special place with very special people -- and a very special dog!

Dave KS USA 08/06/2010

Best: Ardawn House, Galway and Glen-na-Smol, Howth
Why: Breda was our most gracious host in Galway. The accomodations were fine and the breakfast was excellent. Sean Rickard's B&B in Howth is a great place from which to visit Dublin and Sean will make sure that your visit is a pleasant one.

Patrick J. Farmer in Clearwater, Fl USA 08/01/2010

Best: The Olde Bakery, Kinsale
Why: If you have to get sick in Ireland pray that you are staying at the Olde Bakery. Our son Chris who was our driver, woke up one morning with a temperature of 103. Our host, Chrissie Quigley went into attack mode. She set up an appointment with a local Doctor. Our host, Tom, drove our son to the Doctor that morning. Chrissie even had a drug store lined up for us and then graciously manuevered her guests around so that our son would have a first floor room for an unscheduled additional night. We can't say enough about Chrissie and her Irish hospitality. We told this story to a number of Irish People and they told us that there is a Chrissie in every town. Someone who knows everybody and knows how to get things done. Thank you Chrissie.

Patrick J. Farmer in Clearwater, Fl USA 08/01/2010

Best: Milestone House, Dingle
Why: Barbara and Michael are great hosts. They couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. Plus their breakfasts were the best of the trip.

Worst: Carraig Beag in Salthill near Galway
Why: We arrived on a very chilly, rainy day. The B&B was well maintained but downright cold inside. I asked the owner if we could have a couple of hours of heat so we could dry out our wet shoes. She refused because it was summer. Breakfasts were stingy. This place was the most expensive of our whole trip and the worst value.

Kitty Kramer in Centennial, CO USA 07/22/2010

Best: Asgard Guest House, Galway
Why: Veronica, owner, was WONDERFUL, and Mary, one of hte main workers was just charming and incredibly accommodating. We loved the place and found it very comfortable and welcoming.

Karen Labenz in Clive, IA USA 07/18/2010

Best: Cill Bhreac House - Dingle, Kerry
Why: Received a true Irish welcome from Angela. Waking up to views of Dingle Bay and of the local animals in the surrounding fields was a pleasure. www.cillbhreachouse.com

Rose in Chicago, IL USA 07/17/2010

Best: Joy's Rockside, Cashel and Coastline B&B in Dingle
Why: Immaculate! Joan and Rem were very helpful when we had questions. Room was very comfortable and breakfasts great! Vivienne O'Shea at the Coastline in Dingle was great! Gave us really good recommendations for things to do each day and places to eat. Fantastic place to stay! Away from the noise of town but a close walk, even with children.

Worst: Baggot Court Townhouse, Dublin
Why: This hotel has a great staff but needs updating. Especially the bathrooms need work. Comfortable beds and great recs from staff for places to eat nearby. Not a bad place to stay but not fantastic either.

Susan in Richmond, VA USA 07/14/2010

Best: Joy's Rockside House,Cashel and Highfield House, Trim
Why: Joy's Rockside House was the cleanest B&B we stayed at in Ireland. Joan and Rem are very helpful and breakfast was excellent! Excellent location. Highfield House in Trim was beautiful. Room was big, grounds were beautiful.

Worst: Olde Bakery, Kinsale and Baggot Court Townhouse, Dublin
Why: The Olde Bakery was dirty. While Chrissy was nice, she had decided to have her rugs cleaned the day of our arrival. We were asked to come back later, but even then, our rugs were wet and smelled. Baggot Court in Dublin needs updating. The curtains were falling down and dirty and the bathroom shower was full of moldy grout.

Leslie Giresi in Burlington, NJ USA 07/08/2010

Best: Joy's Rockside House -Cashel & Mespil-Dublin
Why: Joy's is right below the Rock of Cashel. Very helpful & friendly. Mespil is walking distance to all the sites except the old jail. Very helpful.

Scot Dailey in Arlington, Tx USA 06/26/2010

Best: The Old Bakery in Dingle
Why: Chrissy and Tom were exactly what we wanted from a B&B.

Sandy in Bakersifle, ca USA 06/17/2010

Best: Pax House, Dingle; Killeen House, Killarney; Daly's, Doolin; Whitepark House, Ballintoy N.I.
Why: All of these were exceptional in every way. You will be fortunate to stay in any of them. Maldron Hotel Parnell in Dublin was clean, quiet, comfortable and a real bargain at 69 Euro for two including buffet breakfast.

Worst: none
Why: We stayed in 8 places in 15 days and all were very good with the above four being exceptional.

Brian in Ft. Lauderdale, FL USA 06/06/2010

Best: Milestone House, Dingle & Willow Lodge, Kenmare
Why: Quaintness and delicious food was exactly as described in Rick's book. We found ourselves at breakfast with another American couple who were Rick Steve's fans. Barbara, the owner, exclaimed "St. Rick!" and proceeded to tell us about Rick's visit to her B&B. Willow Lodge in Kenmare was equally excellent with the gracious Greta and Paul and equally delicious food.

Betty Malone in Orlando, Fl USA 06/06/2010

Best: Greenmount House, Dingle
Why: By far, this was the best B&B we've ever stay at. The breakfast was amazing, the owners (John & Mary) were very helpful, the staff went the extra mile, and the view was awesome. Furthermore, the price was an amazing value. They should be charging double for the services they provide.

Ron Michaels in Fort Collins, CO USA 04/16/2010

Worst: Park House Hotel
Why: Hotel is old. Room has chipped tile and old bathtub. They put us in a smoking room since we forgot to specify non-smoking when booking. However, they had no air-freshener and told us to open the window. This hotel is filled with American tourists and has no character. I don't understand why the book recommends this hotel.

Cece Chen in Phoenix, AZ USA 04/04/2010

Best: Waters Edge Hotel, Cobh
Why: The room was very large, the staff very accommodating, and the restaurant was delicious.

Worst: Captain's House B&B, Dingle
Why: It was over priced and no hot breakfast was served. The bed linens had a very odd odor. It should not be recommended.

Penelope Rittgers in DeSoto, IA USA 03/24/2010

Best: Hawthorne House - Kenmare and Kilkenney -Butler Court
Why: Mary was very friendly and helpful in Kenmare and Yvonne was super helpful in Kilkenney.

Michael Brock in Spokane Valley, WA USA 03/09/2010

Best: Hawthorne House, Kenmare
Why: updated rooms (all recently re-furbished)- we stayed in the unit next door to the regular B and B and rooms had recently been totally refurbished, good showers, best irish breakfasts in ireland, wonderful hosts Mary and Noel O'Brien. our daughter is studying in dublin and they welcomed her like a family member. excellent location

Pamela King in Vacaville, CA USA 03/06/2010

Best: Kent House B&B in Cork
Why: It was not recommended but I found it literally 100 steps from the train station. SIMPLE! I was on R&R from my duty station in Kurdistan and it was the perfect place to rest and use as a hub for my travel.

Sarah White in Liberty , TX USA 02/16/2010

Worst: Park House Hotel, Galway
Why: We asked for three nights and were told Sunday was fine, Monday was "99%" a sure thing, and Tuesday would be fine. Monday afternoon, our two rooms were emptied and the safes were opened while we were gone. Our valuables were left on a cart by the front desk in the lobby. Come to find out, the hotel was already overbooked on Monday, and no reservations were made for us on Tuesday--the woman at the desk just wanted to fill up on Sunday night! However, Forster Court down the block took us in, gave my aunt and mother tea while they readied two rooms, and couldn't have been nicer to us! My advice--ask to see the computer screen at the Park House--don't take their word that they actually have rooms available!

Merilee Refvem in Centennial, CO USA 01/31/2010

Best: Belfast International Hostel
Why: Clean, neat and well run. Small rooms so my family had a private room w/ lockers.

Nancy Grosshans in Spring, TX USA 01/28/2010

Best: Anvershiel House, Portrush, Northern Ireland
Why: Erna is an awesome Hostess, so warm and helpful. Fabulous rooms, very clean and Warm. The breakfasts are awesome and the best during our trips. This is my second trip to Anvershiel in 6 years and I recommend it to all my buddies for their golfing vacations.

Jerry Qubec in Austin , TX USA 01/12/2010

Best: Greenmount House, Dingle, Ireland
Why: This B&B is located on the outskirts of Dingle but in easy walking distance to the town. There are several rooms to chose from but all are great. Each room has everything you need for your stay and the breakfast staff was terrific. I would definitely stay here again if we should ever return and recommend it to anyone.

Worst: Ardawn House, Galway, Ireland
Why: This was the worst experience in B&Bs we've had during our seventeen years of travel to Europe. Breda was more interested in getting to her hockey match then helping us. The room was shaddy, the shower malfunctioned, and the street noise was disturbing throughout the night. And if that wasn't enough there is a dog race track next door. We had planned to stay longer but one night was more than enough then we could endure. If you should not believe me, check out other travel review sites on this establishment.

James Fletcher in Kihei, HI USA 11/19/2009

Best: Water's Edge B&B, Kenmare, Co. Kerry; Glenn-na-Smol, Howth, Co Dublin.
Why: W E: great hostess, scenic and quiet location, breakfast includes more healthy options than usual, reasonable price, clean, comfortable. Couldn't be better! Glenn-na-Smol: the host and hostess are outstandingly helpful! Terrific place from which to visit Dublin.

Worst: Anvershiel House, Portrush, N. Ireland
Why: Hostess was cold and unfriendly, making our stay uncomfortable. We arranged for 2 nights so we could spend a day at the Giant's Causeway, which was great, but we disliked returning to Anvershiel House the second night. It was just simpler to do so. We were put in a back room with a tiny bathroom. I would definitely NOT recommend this B&B.

Shirley in Pagosa Springs, CO USA 11/08/2009

Best: Greenmount House in Dingle
Why: It was one of the most beautiful B&B's we have ever seen and in a beautiful location. Wonderful, delicious and clean! Also, The Old Presbytery in Kinsale was wonderful, too. Breakfasts were marvelous. Very friendly.

Lori Ecklebe in Omaha, NE USA 10/25/2009

Best: Aaranmore Lodge
Why: Not in book, should be, more modern and better appointed bedrooms than the recommendations in the area which we had looked at. Large beds not the norm in B&Bs

Taylor in Boston, USA 10/18/2009

Best: We liked the Ferry House (B & B) in Dun Laoghre
Why: Pauline (owner) was a terrific hostess - eagre to please and fun to talk to - a real Irish character.

Gail Moser in Bandon, Or USA 10/12/2009

Best: Greenmount House in Dingle
Why: The standard room was beautiful. It went well beyond any expectations of a B/B. The breakfast was nothing short of superb and creative every morning.

Worst: Harding House in Dublin
Why: The room was okay, but HOT! There was no AC and they provided only a small desk top fan that was next to worthless. The open window provided a bit of relief, but the drunkin hillarity from the beer garden and the youth hostile kept us awake instead of the heat doing so. We cranked the TV up to drown out the drunks, but with only rabbit ears for reception all we got was static.

Dale in Libertyville, IL USA 10/11/2009

Best: Pincrest (Kilkenny), Willow Lodge (Kenmare), Eileen Collins (Dingle)
Why: All were great - no complaints with any of them. All hosts were nice and easy to deal with. Would recommend all to anyone.

Eric in Falls Church, VA USA 10/04/2009

Best: Harbour Nights in Dingle
Why: We had a great room with a view for a very reasonable price. The owners are super. My husband didn't want to leave.

Worst: The Townhouse of Dublin
Why: The rooms are very small and uncomfortable. We were not able to sleep due to constant noise. The neighborhood is definitely rough around the edges. This is a youth hostel.

Mary Therese in Tucson, AZ USA 10/02/2009

Best: Four Seasons Galway
Why: Very Homey and accomodating.

Ed Thurlow in Iselin, NJ USA 09/26/2009

Best: Whispering Pines B & B in Kenmare
Why: The hospitality of Mary Fitzgerald was above and beyond. She could not do enough make us comfortable and to answer any question we had.

Maria M Maclean in Nelson, BC Canada 09/20/2009

Best: Ardawn House in Galway
Why: Are you kidding me? This was a top-knotch establishment, with great rooms, food and location. Close enough to everything (including bus and train stations) yet far enough away so as to remain "quaint." Mike and Breda were wonderful hosts and on our last morning (it was the day after Breda's birthday) she and I had the chance to really talk. I would stay at the Ardawn again in a NY minute - or less!

Pamela in Overland Park, KS USA 09/12/2009

Worst: Number 31
Why: Your book really loved the Dublin accomindations of "Number 31". We have had so many success with your recommendations, we immediately booked this place. On arriving, our host was wonderful and immediately took us to our room. The room was "Big", but that is about all. The couch was uncomfortable along with the chair because of fabrics used that were scratchy, the windows did not open at all, no air cirulation, bathroom was put into the room, but no towel racks. The worst was you could hear everything, flushing toilets, people talking in the next room, showers running, we got no sleep. Breakfast the next morning, was OK, but for $330.00 a night, I think you better relook at that recommendation. We ended leaving that morning and went into the Mespil, while it was not in the same category, it was clean, tea in our room, air circulation, windows that open and only $90.00 a night.

Darlene Sherman in Philadelphia, pa USA 09/09/2009

Worst: Harding Hotel in Dublin
Why: We asked for a more quiet room (last September when we booked), but they could not accommodate this. We were above the beer garden and pub - loud music lasted til 1:00 in the morning - even ear plugs did not help. I wouldn't chance it again.

Sharon Smith in Santa Rosa, CA USA 09/07/2009

Best: Ole Bakery - Kinsale
Why: Warmth and friendliness.

Mary Ann in Wilmette, IL USA 09/06/2009

Best: Alpine Guest House in Dingle, and Joy's Rockside House in Cashel. The Christchurch Jurys Inn in Dublin was just fine, too.
Why: The only tough part is the price--too bad the dollar is weak!

Carol and Bob Hicks in Los Angeles, CA USA 09/04/2009

Best: Churchview B&B Gurteen
Why: Only 4 years old, orthopedic beds, clean, comfortable, modern, great location near pubs for lunch and dinner. Great trad music within a 1 minute walk from B&B. Jacci was a wonderful hostess! and great breakfast. The best B&B that we stayed at in 15 nights in NW Ireland

Daniel Murphy in Ocean Shores, WA USA 09/02/2009

Best: Milestone House, Dingle, Co. Kerry and Boulevard Guesthouse, Westport, Co. Mayo
Why: Milestone: Barbara and Michael are excellent hosts who are very helpful in finding your way around and making recommendations from dinner, to music, to sightseeing.

Boulevard Guesthouse: the rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Wish we stayed more then one night.

Kevin and Sheila in Whitesboro, NY USA 08/29/2009

Best: Mary O'Neill's ,Kinsale
Why: It was quiet (except for 10 minutes when the Ghost Tour began), clean, we could walk to town...so-o nice, mailbox was across the street in the wall (stamps easily available at news stand3 min down hill, reasonably priced, and most of all..Miss Mary is an Irish 'trip', with boundless energy, a quick mind and typical Irish heart. We loved staying thereand hated to leave!

Susan and Lamar Robinette in Clemson, sc USA 08/23/2009

Best: Kilkenny Butler Court
Why: Of all the B&B's we used during our two weeks in Ireland this was by far the best. My main concern is cleanliness and this place topped the charts. Breakfast was continental and in the room when we arrived ready for the next morning, so we could eat at our leisure. Yvonne was VERY helpful with directions and info. Also free WiFi.

PJ in Carlsbad, CA USA 08/11/2009

Best: didn't use recommendations--used Irish tourist board B&B book
Why: We were able to live in the countryside, with the people and get a more personal experience. These rooms were all clean, nicely furnished and inexpensive.

Christina in New York, NY USA 08/08/2009

Why: Warm and welcoming hostess. Gorgeous views looking out over Dingle Harbour.

Why: Marie and Steve were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed spending time just talking with them about life in Ireland. They have a lovely home in a very convenient spot for traveling into and out of Dublin.

Carolyn Smith in Garden Grove, CA USA 07/14/2009

Best: Grey Gables B&B - Ennis, County Clare
Why: The location was ideal for us since it was a short walk to the bus/train station and into the town. The room was clean and comfortable. Best of all was proprietor Mary Keane. She was personable, helpful, and truly made our stay memorable with her sense of humor and genuine interest in making our stay enjoyable.

Kay Pitchon in Tarpon Springs, FL USA 07/12/2009

Best: The Whins, Dunfanaghy
Why: Grace (Anne Marie's mother) was so gracious and helpful to us - the hospitality was terrific. The house was impeccably clean, breakfast was excellent, and there were nice extras like a stack of local information & binoculars to look out over the bay from the sitting room window and a basket of magazines in our room.

Shan Hays in Mesa, AZ USA 07/04/2009

Best: Milestone House, Dingle
Why: Our Host Barbara welcomed us with refreshments (something no one else did on our trip) as she provided us with their own map and suggestions for what was worth seeing and spending our money on the Dingle circular tour. Her suggestions were right on. Using her suggestions in combination with Rick's directions in the book, we had the perfect guide. Then two days later when we left, she walked us out to the car with directions for how to move us along on our trip.

Donna Wichelman in Fort Collins, CO USA 06/29/2009

Best: Lynden (www.lyndenban bandb.com)
Why: I agree with everything that Rick shared. Also, the owners Maria and Stephen were special people. Stephen shared some great ideas as to what to see and do.

Steve Ferrin in Naperville, Il USA 06/28/2009

Best: Milestone House. / Chart House/ Grey Gables
Why: As so many readers have said, Barbara and Michael are exceptional hosts. Their place (Milestone House) is lovely, close enough to Dingle town to walk or short drive with a great view of the water./ The breakfast at Chart House in Kinsale was great...large beautiful dining room, lots of choices. The location was good with the short walk to the pier and main sights of the town. (We were surprised that our rooms at Chart House were upstairs as we had requested lst floor but should have read your book more carefully to know that we needed to request ground floor. (None available at Chart House.) Billy and Mary helped take our bags upstairs though. Grey Gables was a good choice for us although it took us awhile to figure out that we could get into the main part of Ennis just by driving a mile or less to the town parking lot from which it was an easy walk to Clare Museum, pubs etc./Next door to Grey Gables was a super little grocery/postoffice where we could get all kinds of needs & also order freshly made sandwiches at the deli to take on our drives to the Cliffs etc.

Marie & Bob Andel in Kirkwood, MO USA 06/16/2009

Best: Olde Bakery B & B - Kinsale
Why: Tom and Chrissie could not have been kinder or friendlier. The warmth of eating in the kitchen and the tasty breakfasts just made us feel so welcome

Worst: Pinecrest B & B - Kilkenny
Why: The house was very clean and our room pleasant. But the atmosphere was not very warm and the food not very tasty. Plus it was a little out of the way. We would not stay there again.

Ellen Cole in Shaker Heights, OH USA 06/05/2009

Best: Tie Hawthorn House, Kenmare, and Anvershiel, Portrush
Why: both were great. Hospitality was wonderful for both. My husband loved being called Darling at breakfast,(H.H,) and not by me. At Anvershiel, Erna helped us with laundry-above and beyond. Recommended laundry was closed and she took our stuff to her laundry place, out of town. Wonderful.

Worst: Carrig Beag in Galway
Why: froze at night because no heat. Told us the heat was turned off for summer, then next night heat was on but only until 10pm. 9 degrees in the morning. Catherine was not as pleasant as other owners.

Gail Buss in Ballwin, MO USA 05/31/2009

Best: Milestone B&B Dingle
Why: They sat down with you to plan routes, make dinner reservations in towns you're to visit next, show hikes. Tell them what you would like to do and they will suggest a way to do it. Told you how to get to places, what sign to look out for. Up to discussing Irish society issues if you talk to them about specifics.

Best: The Commodore Hotel, Cobh
Why: Awesome view, St Colman right in our back window and the sea and promenade out of our front window!

Vickie Bell in Bremerton, WA USA 05/20/2009

Best: Pinecrest B&B, Kilkenny; Harbour Heights B&B, Portrush
Why: Definitely the hosts. All of the b&b's were roughly equal in terms of cleanliness and amenities, but these hosts felt like family by the time we left.

Worst: Sraid Eoin House, Dingle town
Why: Very noisy. The walls were so thin we could hear people talking in the next room, and the noise from the neighboring pub(s) kept us up until 2 a.m. The discount was not worth it.

Shirlene Hayashibara in Riverside, CA USA 05/20/2009

Why: Because it was a quiet, relaxing village. Also the Doolin Activity Lodge B&B arranged all my outings. I was a women traveling alone and Deidre O'Dwyer (owner) made sure I was safe, happy and content, also prepared excellent meals. It was a very family oriented B&B.
