Civitavecchia transportation to Rome or airport

I am looking for suggestions on how transfer from Civitavecchia to Rome, train versus shuttle? We are trying to hold down costs, can't decide if we should we also stay at airport for 11 am departure from FCO or stay near termini and take early morning train? Any info from your cruise transportation and post cruise hotel stay appreciated.

Cheapest way and reasonably convenient from the port to Rome will be via train - 10 to 15 dollars/person depending on train. You can easily stay in Rome for a 11 AM departure. The hotels around the airport are expensive and non descript. For two people the train to the airport is about $40, a shared shuttle from you hotel about $50 and a taxi about $60. We have taken three cruises out of Rome and always take the train.

Kim, Frank's advice is spot on. The train is by far the least expensive mode of transportation from the port. Currently, you could ride the Regionale train in from Civitavecchia for as little as €4.10 per person (to Roma San Pietro or Roma Trastevere). It's also only €4.50 to go as far as Roma Termini. Probably one of the best train bargains in Italy! If you stayed in Roma Trastevere, you could catch the FM1 back out to the airport for only €8.00 a person. Other less expensive modes would be to use the Terravision Bus Service or SITBus Shuttle services for €6 and €8 to get out to the FCO airport. But as Frank suggests, if you have a larger group, a taxi for four (€40 if you stay in the fixed Taxi Rate zone) or a shuttle if you have a even larger party, might be the best bargain. Because you have an 11 AM flight, you could really stay anywhere in town. If you are flying back on a US-flagged airline you'll have to depart through Terminal 5 at FCO and US airlines usually ask you to be there three hours in advance - so 08:00. You can leave from almost anywhere in the city by 07:00 and easily make that timeframe. So I'd stay where you like... Staying at either Roma Termini for the train, or the airport for a shuttle, is not necessary with an 11 AM departure.
