Tour Operations Specialist

Rick Steves' Europe, a leader in the travel industry, is looking for a well-organized and capable Tour Operations Specialist to fill a regular 35–40 hour week position. The overall responsibility of this position is to assist with the implementation and oversight of Rick Steves' Europe tours. This job entails organizing, managing, and confirming numerous tour-related details (reservations, cancellations, payments etc.), and following through on tasks. This person will be assigned specific itineraries and will be expected to coordinate all aspects of those itineraries accurately and thoroughly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Making all reservations necessary to support assigned itineraries (hotels, local guides etc.)
  • Communicating with European vendors (hotels, restaurants, local guides etc.) and Rick Steves' tour guides; responding to, and resolving, requests, complaints, problems, or questions
  • Processing and tracking tour member surveys
  • Entering tour information into database
  • Reviewing tour budgets and guide expenditures
  • Proofing marketing materials related to assigned itineraries
  • Ensuring guides have the necessary information to run their tours
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications include:

  • Excellent organizational skills; the ability to manage large amounts of information while keeping track of the details
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to carry out basic, repetitive work in a busy, sometimes stressful, environment
  • Working independently and as a collaborative team player
  • Representing Rick Steves' Europe in a professional manner at all times
  • The ability to be discreet and exercise good judgment
  • Extensive European travel experience
  • Familiarity with Rick Steves' tour program
  • Advanced Microsoft Word and proficiency in Excel, preferred
  • Proficiency in German or French, preferred

Radio Editor & Producer

Rick Steves' Europe (RSE) is looking for an experienced radio producer to join our team in Edmonds, WA. The ideal candidate will have a background in producing public radio and a thorough knowledge of current events. Familiarity with authors and issues in the field of travel is preferred. Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the audio editing process to ensure timings and volumes are within the program's parameters
  • Edit raw interviews and recording sessions to public radio production standards 
  • Assist with preparation for Rick's interviews with various guests prior to scheduled recording sessions
  • Organize and file interview notes, archive audio and program materials, and perform other administrative tasks as needed 
  • Assist with contacting and scheduling guests and publicists for recording sessions, including follow-up correspondence
  • Help organize prospective listener-callers and e-mails received from web blasts during the days just prior to the scheduled recording sessions
  • Field and screen calls during recording sessions.  Greet in-person guests and facilitate preparation in studio. Coordinate follow-up, if needed

Qualifications include:

  • B.S. or B.A. in Communications, Broadcasting, or related field
  • 5+ years production and sound editing experience
  • Previous experience in public radio programming or related field
  • Competency in radio editing software, including Adobe Audition
  • Knowledge of current events, authors, and issues in the field of travel
  • Knowledge of RSE's travel philosophy
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage time effectively
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good public relations skills, particularly interacting with the public over the phone and by e-mail
  • Extensive travel experience
  • Proficiency in Excel preferred

Director of Marketing & Customer Experience

A senior management position at Rick Steves' Europe, Inc. (RSE) — Director of Marketing & Customer Experience — is an exciting career opportunity for a skilled and experienced marketing professional. This new position is responsible for directing RSE's marketing strategy, research, communication and the quality of the customer experience to increase sales, brand loyalty and customer satisfaction across multiple areas of business.

The right candidate will bring extensive business, marketing, brand management and customer relationship experience to RSE, preferably from the travel and tour industry. This individual will work closely with Rick Steves and the COO, and contribute to a company culture that values integrity, empathy, collaboration, accountability, teaching, and a strong customer focus. The Director of Marketing & Customer Experience will work at the RSE headquarters in Edmonds, WA and report to the COO.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure that the Rick Steves philosophy, values and brand are genuinely and consistently represented throughout all product and service lines, promotional materials, the customer experience and company events.
  • Improve the company's ability to “know the mind of the customer” by researching, developing and implementing plans to guide and measure marketing, sales and customer service efforts that maximize customer satisfaction and achieve RSE's business objectives.
  • Write and edit promotional content in the style and voice of Rick Steves, as needed.
  • Supervise RSE's Marketing Manager, Tour Sales Manager, Travel Center Manager, Social Media Team and Public Relations Specialist.
  • Engage with fellow members of RSE's Tour Planning Group to shape the itinerary specifics, pricing, inventory management and promotional content of 40+ European tour itineraries.
  • Collaborate with Rick Steves and fellow members of RSE's Business Team to define and achieve the company's overall goals, objectives, policies and priorities.
  • Evaluate market research and adjust marketing strategy to meet changing market, economic, technological, UI/UX and competitive conditions.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with industry influencers and key strategic partners.
  • Attend travel shows, conferences, and other events as required to promote RSE.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Initiatives:

Examples of initiatives this person will spearhead include:
  • Improving coordination of marketing, sales and customer service goals and strategies across departments.
  • Expanding utility of the CRM.
  • Gathering and analyzing new customer metrics.
  • Revamping the company's email subscription system.
  • Deploying targeted content across multiple channels to fuel customer engagement, sales and brand loyalty.
  • Measurably improving the quality of the RSE customer experience across multiple areas of business.

Qualifications include:

  • BA or equivalent degree, MBA and/or 10+ years relevant experience preferred.
  • Extensive European travel experience.
  • Track record of success enhancing the customer experience as a Brand Manager or equivalent.
  • Track record of success managing and leading highly productive and collaborative cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to conduct research and prepare concise reports, briefings, presentations, or responses that use visually compelling presentations that leverage data to tell a story.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communications skills for a variety of audiences.
  • An inspiring and engaging leadership style, approachable, calm under pressure.
  • Strong understanding of, and enthusiasm for, the RSE company and its travel philosophy.
  • Travel and tour industry experience preferred.

General Counsel

Rick Steves' Europe (RSE) is looking for a smart, capable attorney to fill a full time in-house General Counsel position.  The General Counsel will serve as the primary legal advisor/researcher/administrator with respect to regulatory matters, litigation issues, contract negotiations, and risk management.  In addition, this person will be integral to the philanthropic actions of the company and ensure they are in alignment with the RSE mission.  The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about Washington State Law and the dynamics of running a mid-sized business. This position reports to the COO & CEO.

  • Provide counsel concerning compliance with international, federal, and state regulations
  • Advise on the development of new business opportunities
  • Provide guidance on HR issues, political issues, and philanthropic opportunities
  • Facilitate efficient and effective decision-making processes by gathering data, assembling appropriate stakeholders, preparing high-level analysis, and formulating recommendations
  • Provide project management on initiatives, as needed
  • Serve as the informational resource to the company, maintain confidential records, and assist with special projects, tasks, and events, as assigned

Qualifications include:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree with license to practice in Washington state
  • 4+ years of experience in corporate law
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong negotiating and presentation skills
  • Proven organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively
  • Strong relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • High level of integrity and professional accountability
  • Knowledge of RSE's travel philosophy and tour program preferred
