Air India?

Anyone have experience flying Air India? I've never flown this carrier and am a bit leery . . .

I haven't, but a friend flew them Seattle to Delhi a few years back and she HATED it. Generally I hear the airline is not very good, and probably better to avoid it.

Hopefully someone else with firsthand experience will chime in also.

I flew AI last year from Chicago to Frankfurt and paid around $500 for it. Most other airlines wanted at least $800 and I was a poor grad student so I thought I'd give it a shot. I thought it was very... well... Indian. They're a rather disorganized bunch, but they got the job done, if a bit late.

Flight there: an ok experience, but about an hour late (which I hear is pretty typical). The flight seemed pretty full and a bit chaotic, but I made sure to reserve a good seat ahead of time. I was in middle bulkhead row section with an empty seat next to me.

Flight back: n/a. I received an email 4 days prior saying my 2pm departure was 'rescheduled' to 6pm, and checked again the morning of my flight and saw that the expected departure time was actually 10pm. AI then rebooked me on AA, who had a FRAORD flight at 2:15pm.

Couple notes: reserve a seat ahead of time. Be prepared to wait in line for some time to check in(people going to India bring everything you can possibly imagine and more, and AI's counters are understaffed). Ask for a priority bag tag (more helpful on the flight home) to minimize waiting at the other end.

When I was studying abroad in London about six years ago, my then boyfriend (and now husband) came to visit me. He flew Chicago to London on AI, because it was the cheapest flight. From what I remember, his experience was OK. Everything went fairly well (I remember he got into Heathrow a little early). The only complaints were that it was a little squished, kids were running everywhere and the food was a bit of an adventure.
