Louvre painting described by Bill Bryson - which one?

So in his book "neither here nor there" he describes a painting in the Louvre as "one aristocratic woman casually sticking her thumb in another woman's fundament". Dying to know - what painting is this?!?!

Hrumph! Congrats to Bets for being the board's expert on sixteenth century porn. And can we assume that the Pincher was wearing black socks and a mask and that the Pinchee had matching boots, garter belt and whip? And, be advised the Webmaster should destroy the thread as soon as possible since the FBI investigates such things and the lot of us can wind up in the pokey in short order.

I just looked up the meaning of the word fundament, which is a word that does not correspond to the activity in the Gabrielle d'Estees' painting, though the painting does depict two aristocratic women.

I have to agree. I don't think "fudament" quite cooresponds to the suggested painting. And if the FBI, CIA or otherwise are concerned they better grab Bill Bryson and the curator at the Louvre first. I do vaguely recall the suggested painting though. Funny.

I have seen a photo of another painting (name unknown) where a woman is touching the vagina of another woman to indicate that she is pregnant. These medieval folks would probably be shocked by what Bill Bryson writes about women from Iowa in the "Lost Continent". The joy of Bryson is when he gives us a chance to laugh at ourselves.

I doubt that the Feds are going to crack down on folks discussing European Art on a European Travel Website. Much of art is risque, if you don't like it, move on.

Darren, sorry, but I've led a very sheltered life and am a bit of a prude. Some things just make me uncomfortable, especially nekkid wimmins touching their fundaments. .........Okay, Bets, I take it back, you, you, you consumate art critic, you. Sheesh!

Ed, Thanks for taking it back. However, you do need to learn the difference between a nipple and a fundament. By the way, can you accept that we have a mountain range called the "grand tetons?" What were those French explorers thinking of. Horreur.
