Seeing Salzburg from Munich

Next June we will be staying in Munich for 6-8 days after an 8 day Danube river cruise. There will be 8 in our group, so we will not be using a car. We would like to se Salzburg, the Eagles Nest, a salt mine, and the castle at Herrenchiemsee. There seems to be a day tour for each place, but I'd like to combine the sites into a two day excursion. With all the daylight in June, I'd think we could see more than one thing in a day. Can anyone suggest a tour company that can do this for us at a resonable price? or would we be better off getting a train pass and doing it ourselves? Thanks!

Kim, I would do it myself, but then I've spent months in this part of Germany and know how to do it. Doing it all in one day would not give you a chance to do justice with anything. Even two days would be pushing it. With eight people you would be able to do the trip from Munich to Salzburg, with a stopover in Herrenchiemsee, with two Bayern-Tickets (34€ ea., assuming all 8 are adults). You might get a discount for the boat to Herrenchiemsee Island with the Bayern-Tickets. You probably wouldn't have much time to see Salzburg that evening. The next day you could buy another two Bayern-Tickets and go from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden by train by way of Freilassing. In Berchtesgaden the Bayern-Ticket gives you unlimited use of the buses there, except for the special mountain buses that take you up to the Eagles Nest. You can see train and bus schedules on the German Rail (Bahn) website. It might be possible to go directly to Salzburg and spend more time there, then, the next day, go to the Eagles Nest, and hit Herrenchiemsee on the way back to Munich, but you would probably want to skip the salt mine to do that.

Lee knows what they're talking about. When you get to Salzburg, you may can find a tour operator that can carry you on excursions to the outlying towns. From Munich to Salzburg is just about 90 miles. Everyone you meet in Salzburg is like talking to a tour guide, and they're especially accommodating. The Augustiner beer hall is also a great place to spend the afternoon--authentic Tirolean kind of place.

Salzburg is so beautiful. You can easily spend a day or two just there. From Salzburg take daytrips. The Lakes District daytrip from there was incredible.

We were also in Salzburg without a car and my in laws wanted to see Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest, so we took a half-day tour with Bob's Tours and had a great guide, Jurgen. Bob's will do custom tours so I'm sure you could work out something with them for those two days. They are small tours in minivans. As for price, well, it wasn't cheap but it wasn't any more expensive than any other tour operators in that area. Be advised that admission fees aren't included, so when you go to take the bus up to the Eagle's Nest, or the Salt Mine, or whatever, you'll be paying an additional fee for everyone. Perhaps with a group that large you could discuss if group tickets are available for those attractions with the tour company. Or you could just do it yourself as Lee suggested, but I think he's right that 2 days to see all those things via public transit would be pushing it.
