April 29: Traveling Smartly with a Smart Phone with Gabe Gunnink

6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. ET | REGISTER

Travelers of the past scheduled mail drops to keep in touch with friends, clung to paper maps, and dawdled in line to make museum reservations. Today, all this can be accomplished with a pocket-sized smart phone, but a labyrinth of plans, settings, and apps makes accessing this convenience confusing. MNT host Gabe Gunnink cuts through the clutter to guide you through setting up your smart phone for travel and using it on the ground in Europe. Together, we compare international plans and SIM cards, parse through Wi-Fi and cellular data, and pick out handy apps to help you make the most of every mile, minute, and dollar on your next adventure.

May 6: Great Swiss Cities with Mirjam Grob

6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. ET | REGISTER

Against the backdrop of staggering natural beauty, Switzerland’s cities abound with often overlooked urban charm. Join Rick Steves’ Europe guide Mirjam Grob for a tour of her hometown, tangled, lakeside Lausanne, where we enjoy Art Brut and learn to blend in with Swiss city folk. After a crash course on Switzerland’s efficient transit system, we visit the classy capital of Bern to ponder pragmatic drug policies and float a rushing river. Along the way, we sip Apfelschorle and snack on alpine cheese and chocolate.

Together with special guest and local battlefield expert Dale Booth, they share the remarkable story of D-Day by visiting 54 miles of Normandy coast – stretching from Utah beach in the west to Sword beach in the east – that witnessed the largest amphibius assault in history. Join us to honor this historic event, receive tips for making the most of your visit to Normandy, and stop at impressive WWII museums, monuments, and cemeteries along the way.

June 10: Budapest with Andrea Makkay

6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. ET | REGISTER

Europe’s most underrated big city, Budapest is ready to surprise with unique culture and experiences. Join guide Andrea Makkay as we recall Hungary’s secret police at the House of Terror and tour Communist VIPs at Memento Park before enjoying Budapest’s modern delights—soaking in elegance at the Széchenyi Baths, sampling paprika in the Great Indoor Market Hall, and taking in fine music at the Hungarian State Opera. Along the way, Andrea snacks on a classic chimney cake and sips herbaceous Unicum as together we savor the wonders of the Hungarian capital.
