Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Bavaria

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Munich for a "Welcome to Bavaria" meeting. After an orientation walk through our neighborhood, we'll get introduced to Munich's pedestrian-friendly historic core. This evening we'll enjoy a hearty dinner together. Sleep in Munich (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Marvelous Munich

This morning we'll join a local guide for a fascinating walk through Munich's Old Town, weaving together the history and traditions of Munich and Bavaria. We'll visit the legendary Hofbräuhaus beerhall and explore the centuries-old Viktualienmarkt, famous for traditional crafts and gourmet food stalls — your guide can point out some local specialties along the way. The rest of the day is yours to explore the English Garden, take in a museum, or — on winter tours — simply savor the surrounding Gemütlichkeit (comfy-coziness) of Munich's Christmas markets. Tonight, you'll be free to perfect your prost with new friends at one of Munich's historic beerhalls, where you can hoist a liter-sized mug of beer, and a pretzel as big as your head. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Scenic Drive into Austria

Get your cameras ready! This morning we'll drive through the picturesque villages and lush rolling hills of Bavaria as we head into Austria. On our way to Salzburg, we'll visit Trumer Pils, an award-winning brewery crafting German-style pilsners for more than 400 years. Afterwards, we'll have lunch together before continuing on to charming Salzburg, the city of splendid gardens, Baroque churches, and one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses. We'll settle into our quaint hotel before taking a neighborhood orientation walk and sharing dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Splendid Salzburg

Salzburg is the perfect town for a walking tour, and together with our local expert, that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs that line Getreidegasse, through picturesque gardens and going for Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral. We'll then drop into a cooking school, for a lesson on how to make the amazing, appley Austrian treat Apfelstrudel. The rest of your day is free for hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or (on winter tours) wandering through the Christmas markets. Your free evening is perfect for a concert featuring the work of Salzburg's favorite son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Lovely Lakes and Hallstatt

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. On our way, we'll stop at the mountain retreat of Kaiservilla, where Emperor Franz Josef signed the declaration that kicked off World War I. Next we'll skip like stones across the pristine waters of Austria's Salzkammergut lakes district on a boat cruise enjoying the breathtaking lakeside villages and craggy mountain vistas. This afternoon we'll settle into our cozy lakeside lodging, where you'll be free to commune with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines. This evening we'll gather to share dinner together. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt (1 night). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 6: Melk Abbey, the Danube and Vienna

Today we'll take another scenic drive to the Danube Valley, where we'll tour the artistic treasures and Baroque wonders of the Benedictine abbey at Melk. Then we'll cruise Austria's prettiest stretch of the Danube River and check if it really is blue (season permitting). We'll finish our day in the one-time capital of a powerful empire — and our tour's grand finale — extravagant, opulent Vienna. After checking into our hotel we'll take a walk, orienting you to historic Vienna and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy dinner on your own. Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Historic Vienna

We'll begin our day by joining a local guide for a walking tour that takes us to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Our walking tour will continue with a behind-the-scenes peek inside Vienna's famous opera house (when available). Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus, or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna in 8 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.

The tour was well planned and well executed, and we enjoyed it as best we could. The weather was very hot. Hot temperatures with un-air conditioned rooms lead to several sleepless nights. No sleep is no fun. One must get sleep to be able to enjoy the daytime activities, so we paid a really high price to save money on un-cooled rooms. A central location does not offset lack of AC either. I ended up moving hotels on my own nickel one night to get AC and sleep.

Our tour guide, Carlos, was excellent. Some of tours were better than others. Neuschwanstein was too far of a drive and too many tourists were being pushed through small rooms to be worthwhile.

My daughter and I term our Rick Steves tour of Munich and Austria an adventure, not a vacation. We are thankful for the action-packed itinerary that allowed us to see and do so much. We appreciate all of the transportation modes that were seamlessly used throughout our days. Our tour guide, Carlos, did an excellent job of shepherding our small "flock".

I was quite unsure about this type of tour but it was a "sister" trip so I joined my three siblings. Quite to my surprise, it was far more active and informative than I anticipated so I thoroughly enjoyed myself the entire trip. The unexpected activites were enjoyable - the extras at the cooking class and the luge ride are examples. I envisioned a bunch of blue-haired ladies carrying their precious purses toddling around and it was anything but that.

We're inexperienced travelers so going as part of a group is ideal for us. Having someone else make all the arrangements for sites to see, hotels, food and transportation is more relaxing and allows us to get more out of the experience than if we were wandering around on our own.

This was a well run tour! Carlos and Tara were excellent guides, as were our local guides. The scenery was beautiful. I enjoyed staying at small, family owned hotels in the middle of the action. The restaurants Carlos took us to were great. My favorite town was Salzburg. The views were amazing, and the city has something for everyone to enjoy. The whole trip was an adventure that I had never experienced. We've already booked a 2020 Rick Steves trip to Switzerland!

Excellent guides, in particular Carlos, but also the local guides Alex, Zabina and Gearheart (spells?), which made the trip very enjoyable as well as informative. The logistics and schedule were well put together, having the right mix of group activities and free time. I also enjoyed the company of our fellow travelers. They were all very nice and fun people, which I credit Rick Steve's with, for attracting a great bunch of people!

After watching RS on tv I felt his tour was the best value for my money. I have been on other tours and was constantly going into my pocket for one thing or another. No tips, tourist traps etc. The group was small only 28 people so you got to know everyone and feel like I made some new friends on the trip. Our guide Matti was wonderbar!!! There was enough free time to explore on your own or just relax.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow moment was definitely Lake Hallstatt, such a beautiful, serene tranquil place. The third man museum was also great but by Saturday morning I was a bit overwhelmed with history. AWESOME! This was my first Rick Steves Tour and I was traveling solo.As a teacher for 31 years-- a few years back,I have made it a mission to go someplace that I have never been! Seeing Neuschwanstein Castle was on my list. This tour exceeded my expectations! The people, the experiences, the food, the destinations-- all just wonderful!! My heart was full!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Well- Matti knew my awe moment was to see Neuschwanstein and I did love it... but I have to say our drive from Salzburg to Lake Halstatt brought tears to my eyes. The surprise stops were unexpected and such a treat... When we pulled off at an overlook of the Austrian Alps in Gosau (photo labeled that)-- I cried! I'm a sucker for gorgeous landscapes and this site looked like a painting. I look for the "AWE" moment in each of my trips and this was it. Then Lake Halstatt... pure magic!"

I am so thrilled to have been a part of this tour. Matt was such a super guide in so many ways. He provided interesting facts all along the way on the bus rides and also in the towns on our personal tours. His lunches and dinners were great choices of food which pleased everyone. His positive, happy, yet serene personality put everyone at ease. One of my favorite highpoints was the surprise stop at a farm, between Salzburg and Lake Hallstat. So great to see how Austrian people make a living.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Lake Hallstat's boat ride to the lakeside village. I took a hundred pictures from the shoreline and from the boat. It had to be the most beautiful, tranquil spot I have ever seen. "Hard to answer as I was in a constant state of "wow!" Maybe the Edelweiss cooking school experience. I don't want to ruin the surprise re what happens there, in case a prospective tour guest will be reading this review, but I loved it! I really enjoyed the Munich-Salzburg-Vienna tour which was my third tour with RS. Compared to previous tours I have taken with RS, I noticed that there was more free time to choose what to do which I liked. While I enjoy seeing palaces of royals, once you see one, you have seen many. I would like to know more about the common people who lived during the times of the royals living in the opulent palaces. Most people were commoners but there was more focus on the richest.

Favorite "WOW" moment

My experience was 99% fantastic, but 1 thing I would change: we left Munich at 8am and arrived in Salzburg at 7pm: basically lost a whole day to get a 25-min tour of Neuschwanstein and a view from Maria's Bridge – nice, but it just doesn't meet Rick's standard of max travel thrills/mile/minute/$. So many other options closer to the Munich-to-Salzburg route: Nymphenburg, Herrenchiemsee, Eagle's Nest, or get to Salzburg sooner. Anything that lessens bus hours & increases time taking in the sights.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved every day, but that was expected. Unexpected pleasures included: Maria's organic dairy farm. I believe this stop was at the discretion of our guide, so thanks Rick for giving your guides some scheduling leeway and thanks Maisie for taking us to the farm! The Third Man Museum - a great counterpoint to the over-the-top-Habsburg-ness of Vienna. The Danube cruise was a great way to get off the bus and mingle with tourmates. It was scenic, social, relaxing, and a great place for lunch!"

Overall, great. Maisie was amazing. Hit the tour high spots, had time for our own personal favorites, and Maisie added a side trip to an organic dairy farm to go with our making apple strudel and Third Man Museum tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Third Man Museum helped me better understand my father's WWII Army service in Stuttgart. I picked a personal wow moment and I realize this may not be the favorite for other tour members, but this was completely unexpected while visiting what I thought would only be a movie museum. Far from it. The museum gives a better understanding of Post-WWII in Germany and Austria as well as the beginnings of the Cold War."

Going on an actual tour was a great experience after using Rick Steves guide books for the last 12 years. It was wonderful to have a guide with us the entire trip informing us, trouble shooting, keeping us on time, etc. and also benefit from local city guides. I appreciated the expertise, the included services and benefits and the right amount of "free time" to explore on our own. The little things that really added to the fun was the apple strudel class and the visit to the farm.

Maisie was a great tour guide and worked hard to make sure everyone was having a time.

This was my second Rick Steves tour and was exceptional, just like the last one. Holger was phenomenal. There was a good mix of tour time and free time, with excellent suggestions and instructions on how we might want to spend our free time. Much better than I expected the tour to be. Tour guide, Holger, was outstanding. His timing for the excursions was always on point - we were leaving a place before hordes of others showed up made the tour seem less crowded. Luging was an awesome extra! Holger was very direct and forthright and kept us away from tourist traps. Only downfall was lack of air conditioning and available fans at local hotels. Very difficult to sleep when it's 80 degrees at night with the windows open.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The beautiful town of Lake Halstatt. Water was crisp and clear, boat ride to hotel was great touch. Hotel was beautiful - wish we could have stayed an extra night. Town is a bit touristy and dodging cars (especially of angry locals) on the narrow streets was adventurous, but overall a great experience. Strudel-making followed by listening to three songs from an opera student was amazing!"

This was my fourth RS tour and it was just as fantastic as all the previous ones. Our RS guide was wonderful in helping everyone customize their experience to their particular interests. The local guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The hotels were in the city centers and had lots of character. Great meals with the group as well plenty of free time to explore on your own. My only suggestion is to book an extra day or two in Vienna at the end of the tour as there is so much to see there.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My personal favorite moment was seeing the Mirabell Palace and gardens in Salzburg. The Marble Hall inside is gorgeous and was where Mozart played for the Archbishop. We even booked a concert there in the evening and really enjoyed the performance. The lake cruise in Hallstatt was also gorgeous...and the Viennese coffee houses are the best in the world. I was a little nervous to sign up for a tour as we have never traveled tour style. I previously traveled all the time and was a little nervous to travel internationally without someone guiding us. It was very pleasant to see multiple ages and a variety of group types on our tour. We had an excellent group that seemed to travel very well together, even though it was beginning to get quite warm in Europe. The tour had an excellent mix of planned events and personal downtime.

Excellent balance of organized events, free time. Awesome tour guide in Holger, local guides were incredible, very informative, very engaging. The format and pace work very well - short walking tour on day 1, followed by a longer tour with sites weaved in the next morning. Hotels were very good, even better if all had Air Con as we had very warm temperatures all week. Learned a lot about the Bavaria. Enjoyed the other participants, great company, all meals were tasty, good service.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hallstatt - What a wonderful place. Love the luge and the ride up into that part of the Alps. The Melk Monastery and boat cruise on the Danube was a very good day. Absolutely love Vienna, great hotel and location, the 3rd man was a most interesting and little jewel on the trip."

The entire experience was special for me: 1) it was my first trip to Europe; 2) my entire family was involved; 3) the guidance provided by our tour guide was superior. 1) length of trip, pacing of itinerary, variety of formats for a first timer was appropriate 2) this specific tour had something for everyone in my family 3) Hans' experience was reflected in his astute handling of group dynamics, flexibility with schedule, and personal relationships with restaurant and venue staff.

This was our first trip to Europe and we were not sure what to expect but we had very high hopes. We were not disappointed- it exceeded our expectations. Each city was better than the last as well as the hotel rooms. Hans was phenomenal! Our two young adult sons were with us and we weren't sure if they would enjoy the trip but they loved it was well. Our tour group had two other families with young adults as well. Our fellow tour mates were very sociable and couldn't have been nicer!

It was the first time my family and I had been on a Rick Steve's tour, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Europe! The tour was evidently designed to appeal to multiple types of personalities, in the fact that there was definite structure, but also the free time that allowed you to do some exploring either alone, or in a smaller group setting. We had a wonderful time - and are looking forward to our next adventure.

I think the tour is well planned and implemented, but feels rushed. I do wish the city guides took travelers into more places, rather than just by them (churches and historical buildings, in particular). Also, the directions to the first hotel needed to be clearer. My friend and I were on the DB train, not the S-bahn, but, as we didn't know the difference in terms, got horribly lost attempting to find the hotel and were late. Terms and explanations must be crystal clear. Not a good start for us!

"I had visited all of the cities on this tour previously, so very little was brand new. But, as I had not ever taken a cruise on the Danube, this was a highlight. The other was staying IN Hallstatt rather than just day-tripping there. I wish it had been longer! It's so crowded in the day, but magical once the majority of the tourists have left. I loved that stop!"

Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable trip/tour. It's hard not to compare it to our Scotland tour with you last fall which was truly outstanding. The trip was well managed; the guide knowledgeable; the pace about right. I think what was different was simply the difference between Scotland and Germany/Austria. On this trip, we spent a lot more time in big or bigger cities (Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna) and it felt like it was one Baroque church or palace after another.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Easily, the small town of Hallstatt was my favorite. We spent the right amount of time there and it was "post card" beautiful. The lake, mountains, and quaint village with it's lovely churches provided "head turning" views and photo opportunities throughout."

The tour was very good, a lot of rain, but not much that can be done about that. The rain did not stop us but by the end of 2 days of rain in Salzburg, we were ready to move on. Most of the days moved briskly along but the day that we went to Neuschwanstein was just to rushed. by the time we got to Wieskinche we had 10 minutes to take in such a beautiful church, so it was snap some pictures and run. The other days went very well.

We booked this trip specifically to be able to tour Neuschwanstein, to connect to a second RS tour after Switzerland, and to see more of Austria than we had on a previous non-RS tour that included Munich and Salzburg. It felt like we were rushed at most of the stops, especially Wieskirche. The tour of Neuschwanstein was a disappointment - not due to the weather, but due to its limited viewing, given the time it took to get there, the wait, and the limited amount of what we actually saw.

This was probably my favorite Rick Steves tour out of the three that I've been on so far. "It's definitely a tie between entering/exploring Lake Hallstatt and visiting the dairy farm in Kuchl. Oh my goodness, I can't rave about these places enough. They are super different in what they offer, but both places are still must sees in my opinion. Lake Hallstatt is obviously incredibly beautiful and breathtaking, but it's also serene and historic. The dairy farm in Kuchl gave us an in-depth perspective of what life is like for a farmer in Austria. I mean how rare is that? What a treat."

Start to finish everything about the tour was great. The logistics were quite seamless, the accommodations and transportation were very comfortable, the itinerary included must see sites and surprising activities that were not simply "off the shelf," and the general tour guide and city specific guides were incredibly knowledgeable. Our 5th RS tour met all the high expectations we had from previous tours. Torben kept the tour moving (with one exception, not his fault) and informed with notes on history and culture that were very open, honest and enlightening. This was our first time with RS Tours. As retirees it was a bit more difficult to keep up with the pace, however, we succeeded, although we (my wife and I) skipped a couple of the "walk-abouts". We found it was a bit compressed time wise (not due to the Guide's efforts). Perhaps an additional day or two for the tour could be in order to appreciate the offerings of each city. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Well, most of my "wows" were reserved for "Wow, my face is freezing and I can't feel my fingers anymore" while we were getting trotted around Munich, Hallstatt, and Vienna. I'd say the closest to a scenic "wow" would have been in Hallstatt, which was frozen but gorgeous. I'd also say Gerhard's Third Man Museum in Vienna was a huge "wow" as in "Wow, I had no idea a museum would be necessary to educate Austrians about their own country's experiences in WWII." It was quite moving."

We enjoyed visiting southern Germany and Austria in the Christmas season. We were lucky to have snow at Mad King Ludwig's castle, Haslett and Vienna, so everything looked like a postcard.

It was an awesome experience! I loved the areas we stayed, the fantastic tour guides, the food and the whole experience! I keep telling people I know that they should check out the RS tours if they want to travel abroad. I stayed in Europe for a few months about ten years ago and traveled around to the same areas but did not learn as much as I did on the tour. It was also a great way to travel with other family members and take the stress of planning out of a big trip together. Thank you!!!!

The Christmas season always adds a bit of magic to travels, and this trip was certainly no different. I appreciate that the Rick Steves team was able to coordinate brisk, but beautiful weather - even dusting Vienna with snow, which was just gorgeous!! ;) Learning more about German and Austrian Christmas traditions was very interesting, and I greatly appreciated having both an Austrian guide and a German assistant guide to share their personal experiences.

"My absolute favorite moment was at the snowy, cold, beautiful overlook above Lake Hallstatt. I also loved Vienna in the snow, making apple strudel in Salzburg, listening to local guide Patrick's take on Munich, and seeing the Lipizzaners perform on the extra day I added to my stay in Vienna."

Overall I would recommend this tour. We picked Rick Steve's as it went to all the spots we had hoped to see especially Hallstatt. I think you get a nice overview of each city on the tour and the hotels are in fabulous locations which allows you to really get to see the cities you are staying in! If you want to do a Christmas Markets trip, I'd recommend going a week later as we missed the big one in Munich and it seemed like most were just starting up.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite wow moment was probably Neuschwanstein Castle. We stopped at a church on the way and it was beautiful covered in snow with more snow falling which made a lovely setting. Then we arrived to the town where the castle is which was also snow covered and made the hike up beautiful. The castle was stunning covered in snow. I am sad that Mary's Bridge was closed but that just means I will have to come back again!"

I still have Edelweiss in my head (yes, I know it's not Austria's national anthem!) The sunrise in Hallstatt was breathtaking, the cemetery in Salzburg was the most fantastic cemetery I've seen and the Third Man Museum gave one much to think about!"

It was wonderful to visit these locations at this time of year. There were few crowds, with the exception of the Christmas markets in Vienna... but that was to be expected. I thought it was the best way to experience these locations and get the most out of the experience in a relatively short time. The hotel accommodations were comfortable and convenient. The meals provided were delicious and the restaurants chosen gave me a great sampling of the local menu. Overall I am happy that I went!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Salzburg and Lake Hallstatt were the 2 places I found the most breathtaking. I especially enjoyed anything that included the history of the places we went, like the Hapsburg summer villa tour, and the visit to the treasury in Vienna. I appreciated the visit to the Third Man Museum in Vienna as well. King Ludwig's castle was also impressive, as were the historic buildings and churches/cathedrals. The apple strudel cooking class was also a definite must do activity."

This tour was fantastic! Rolinka is an exceptional guide. Her attention to details and replacing activities on the itinerary due to this being a winter tour was wonderful (ex. visiting the Silent Night Church, stopping in Bad Ischal to explore a local Christmas market & Habsburg palace). It had been 30 years since I traveled to Europe. The idea of traveling with a guide and becoming familiar with some of the local flavor of a place was appealing. Rolinka was generous and expending much energy in taking care of everyone and enabling us to see some very special sites. The days were quite full and I enjoyed viewing the art and architecture, although I must admit, I did become saturated on various occasions.

It was a very enjoyable, educational and interesting tour of the places we visited. This was an excellent tour overall, with a great group of people from all over the country, a memorable tour guide, engaging local guides, well-chosen hotels (with roomy rooms for solo travelers), and an unbeatable itinerary that included cities and locales I have never visited before. I highly recommend a Rick Steves' tour! This is the first tour I have ever been on for a vacation. The entire trip was well planned giving us time for exploring on our own as well as enjoying the group tours, where the group always received "personal" attention. My wife and I made three trips to Europe prior to this tour, doing all of our own planning. We decided to try a Rick Steves tour after quite a bit of research on possible regions to visit. The tour was exactly as described - the small group, interesting hotels, plenty of walking and a mix of scheduled time and free time. I was very impressed with the way our guide Holger kept us organized and amused at the same time. When plans had to change unexpectedly, he adapted quickly. Great time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My WOW moment was the group dynamics Holger worked so hard on. I had never vacationed with a group and wondered what would happen as we moved along in our travels. The buddy system immediately got each of us involved with a stranger. Then the group meals and bus rides allowed us to get to know each other as much or as little as we pleased. All of the sites we visited were interesting in their own ways. I especially enjoyed the Third Man Museum history of WWII and Austria's involvement."

Attention to individual interests, health issues, etc. 7. Free time 8. Freedom to opt in or out of activities without judgment 9. I needed more WC stops than were scheduled 10. Thankful our bus had a facility which I had to use one time

The tour was expertly planned and seamless in execution. A good mix of planned events and free time to let us explore. Great balance between the cities and countryside / lake district. Even though this tour is on the shorter side compared to most Rick Steves tours, I felt the length was perfect (we added on a day at both ends). Not a big deal, but I could have done with a few less church visits in exchange for something active or more "backdoor."

The tour had a lot of events packed into 6.5 days. Yet, I didn't feel rushed and thought we had time to absorb what we saw[INVALID]both with the group and on our own (I was with my wife). One thing different (for me) from the two other Rick Steves tours we've done was what I'd call the perks of where we travelled. So, we had the opportunity to be on the water, not once but twice, and do a hands on cooking class. Overall impression[INVALID]excellent tour that should be one day longer (see below)

I have not had a guided tour before and will not ever go without one again thanks to Rick Steves and his "one of a kind" tour guide, Rolinka. I can't thank Rolinka enough for the wealth of information she shared with us! She was so educated and versed on every aspect of our tour. It was a pleasure to travel with her and your company. Thank you for the memories!

The Munich, Salzburg, Vienna tour exceeded my expectations in so many ways. I was already a Rick Steve's consumer having used his books since 1987. Starting with the Europe 101, I have traveled to all of the EU using recommendations from the series. I knew I liked his style. The difference in having Rolinka as a guide on this tour was just an incredible enhancement of the experience. She was a fountain of knowledge, calm, and fun, which added so much to the enjoyment of each destination.

"My "wow" moment was when the assistant at the apple strudel making event took the stage and sang features from the Sound of Music in opera style. Her sweet demeanor and incredible voice made me feel lucky to witness such talent in an intimate setting. It gave me chills. The strudel was pretty incredible too!"

My wife had great tour. This was our 1st Rick Steve's tour. It was very well organized. Our tour guide was a lot of fun and easy to get to know. It was nice to break up the days with free time and organized tours. We enjoyed the other members of our group. We tried to mingle with different couples at dinner time. We got to know some folks better than others and I think we all got along very well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think Lake Hallstatt was the physical highlight. I have spent my career as a ferry captain on Lake Champlain I would go back to Lake Hallstatt in a heart beat just to watch the activity. As is the norm travelling these days the crowds can be overwhelming if you let them bother you. I spent my career in the tourist service business. So I'm just seeing it from the other side. The crowds at Neuschwanstein Castle was probable the biggest eye-opener. Hard to imagine being there in high season."

This was my first tour and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I was worried that I'd feel "trapped" with a big group of people and that the tour experience would detract from the relaxation of a vacation. I found the Rick Steves experience to be just what my sister and I needed for a fun and immersive trip. I loved how we started each morning learning about the places together, then had free time to explore in the afternoons. It was a great balance of supportive guidance and freedom.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Lake Hallstatt was the most beautiful place I've ever been. I really wish we'd had more time there, one night was not enough and I would have gladly eliminated the next day's excursion to spend more time. We hiked to a waterfall in the woods and it was so gorgeous and relaxing, just what we needed mid-trip. We were warned that the town would be filled with tourists, but I didn't find it more packed than the cities that we visited. That place was heaven on earth and I'd love to go back."

This was my first trip to Europe and I think the decision to use Rick Steves' Tours was perfect. While there was structure, there was also lots of free time to explore on your own. I was able to challenge myself to try different foods, different languages, experience different cultures and broaden my love of history. I also learned how to be a more savvy traveler and to not be intimidated by visiting another country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On the advice of our tour guide, Rolinka, my wife and I along with our new friends, Denise and Esta passed on touring the salt mines in Hallstatt and instead took a hike to a falls outside of town. The natural beauty of the area was absolutely stunning! We were wanting to get some good exercise but we had to stop frequently just to look around and admire the scenery. I have never seen anyplace more beautiful than Hallstatt. It was the highlight of a tour chock full of highlights!"

This was my fourth Rick Steve's trip and I enjoyed the cities, fellow travelers and guide. Salzburg and Lake Hallstatt were my favorite. My overall tour experience was fantastic! I loved all three cities (M/S/V) and Hallstatt was absolutely incredible. Our tour guide Rolinka was the very best-great at keeping 28 adults on task, knowledgeable and fun! My favorite city was Salzburg - it was beautiful and the right size but Munich was a close second. Our day in Hallstatt was magical to the perfect daytime weather and lovely village. The balance between tour and personal time was just right. Very happy with our experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite experiences were: Mozart dinner in Salzburg, dinner together in Hallstatt and our last dinner in the wine garden in Vienna. Our Mozart dinner was elegant, the three 20 min operas beautiful. In Hallstatt, we had an Aperol cocktail party before dinner, Rolinka showed how to filet the fresh lake trout and we had the dining room to ourselves. The wine garden dinner was amazing-eating outdoors on a beautiful late summer evening, the wine, food and zither player were unforgettable."

This was my 7th Rick Steves tour. Of course, I've enjoyed all of my tours - I keep coming back for more - but this was my favorite! Our guide, Daniela, was fun, energetic, and informative. She joins my list of best-loved guides, including Federico (Barcelona, Madrid) and Tom (London). And we quickly bonded with our group of fellow travelers, who embraced the Rick Steves "no grumps" policy and the Bavarian culture.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When I took my first bite of a warm apple-filled Krafpfen at Schmalznudel Café Frischhut in Munich. When the server at Zum Dürnbräu delivered an enormous Kaiserschmarnn, a fluffy pancake with raisins, almonds, and apples, to our table. When Daniela surprised us with an exhilarating luge ride after leaving Salszburg. But my absolute favorite "wow" moment was the private boat ride to the Seehotel Grüner Baum in Hallstatt. Sharing the spectacular vistas with our new friends was extraordinary!"

This was our first Rick Steve's tour and we were very pleased with our experience. Daniella, our guide, was great; very knowledgeable, pleasant, helpful, and enthusiastic! One of my favorite things about our tour were the little surprises along the way that weren't part of the itinerary; an additional concert, a luge ride, local food and beverage tastings. We will definitely try another Rick Steve's tour in the future.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is difficult to choose. There were 2 events Daniela managed to work into our tour that were not "planned" as regularly part of the tour. That made those things seem special. The "luge" run!!! Great fun. And the Third Man Museum in Vienna with Gerhard. That was on my list as #1 for my free time and she announced that our tour would be going there together! My wife & I enjoyed our first trip to Bavaria and our first Rick Steves guided tour, though we had done another My Way tour last year. Our tour guide Daniela was born & raised near Munich, so she was a great resource for us and added a lot to the experience. Besides sharing her local perspective with us, she also planned several special surprises for all of us. My favorite of these was a side visit while up in the Alps to enjoy a trip down a luge run, definitely an amazing experience for us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to choose as there were so many: The beauty of Neuschwanstein castle, the fun of making our own strudel, the Danube boat cruise, breathtaking Lake Hallstatt, so many others. Great memory."

This tour was exceptional because of the quality of the guides: Daniela in particular. The guides, overall, were knowledgeable and accessible. Daniela has a genuineness and openness that made it possible to learn, not only about the history and art of the region, but also about the character and values of the people / regions we passed through. She had the ability to pull together the disparate threads into a cohesive whole. Her sense of humor was greatly appreciated.

"The 3rd-Man Museum was a highlight for me as was Dachau. The guides were irreverent, but highly informative. This was my first guided tour, as well as my first trip as a solo participant. I didn't know what to expect, but found that traveling solo with a Rick Steve's tour group was better than what I could have ever expected. This was my first Rick Steves tour. Overall, I loved it. There was a nice balance of scheduled vs unscheduled time. The tour guides provided valuable insight into the cities and their histories. Favorite "WOW" moment

"Vienna. I'm a professional musician and have always dreamed of walking the same streets that Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Mahler walked. The Haus der Musik was incredible, and how amazing that Vienna has a walk of fame for classical musicians! The tour of the Third Man museum and the zither player at dinner were fascinating. It was a very good overall tour and the group was diverse, interesting, and fun to travel with the entire time. Donald White is an excellent guide and his vast experience in the business is very apparent. Overall, this tour was well-planned, fun and interesting. I felt like there were no "boring" times and also a good mix of scheduled activity and personal time. Rick's guidebooks described the sights nicely so I knew what to expect. A friend of mine had visited Munich and Salzburg alone with the guidebooks and enjoyed her visit, but I definitely got a lot out of the local tour guides, the excellent hotels, tour friends, and the restaurants we were booked at.

Thought that the tour at times was a bit rushed. Often not able to pause and take a snapshot or enjoy site for a few minutes. For example at Melk Abbey, after finishing lunch, had only five or ten minutes to enjoy Abbey itself. Felt pressure to meet deadlines even though everyone was on time. Realize that tour was only 8 days and covered a lot of ground, but would have preferred a slower pace and maybe omitting a few things.

While I realize that planning what will fit in an eight day trip is challenging as you [INVALID] specific sites and cities to be included, I did feel that our group was wisked along a little too rapidly and didn't spend enough minutes at some sites to absorb and appreciate them. I have taken several other tours (but not with Rick Steves) that were 14-18 days in length and didn't feel rushed. However, if we hadn't traveled at the pace we did, we wouldn't have experienced as much.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We learned a lot about ourselves from the trip; mainly, that we are more of "independent" type travelers, so the trade off of loss of independence versus the planning of all the trip details was a bit grating on us. We learned that flying twelve hours to go to a European destination demands a substantial front end "soft landing" as well as time on the back end to help with jet lag, and the feeling of being rushed. The 8 day tour was jam packed- too much.

"There are several, but probably that first view of the Hallstatt area from the boat on the lake. That was a major WOW! It was also amazing to exit the s-bahn station after coming from the Munich airport and taking the elevator right up to Marianplatz in the middle of town - WOW! What a sight!"

This was a good tour. I loved the city walks and the countryside. The group was great and there were a lot of opportunities for good social connection. I think that the summer was not the best time as many things were not available such as the opera or music in some cafes. The Neuschanstein Castle so limited and more about large group management. It might be too popular now. The views of the castle and walking around it was satisfying once I new what it was really like inside.

Though I was hesitant to sign up for a tour that involved traveling between cities as compared to staying in one city for the week, I actually found this experience to be a great learning experience with fun and enjoyment at every turn. The cities that we visited were fascinating, our tour guide, Rolinka, was superb and the other members of the tour were fun to share the experience with. It was a mountain top experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Attending the Edelweiss cooking school and listening to the young woman who sang opera songs as well as "Edelweiss" from the Sound of Music. There wasn't a dry eye in the group. Small wonderful moments such as when the bus pulled off of the road between Salzburg and Hallstadt so we could look at a dazzling vista of lake, mountains and steeples. And not to be forgotten was the visit to the "Third Man Museum." What a learning experience. I rented and viewed the movie upon my return."

For our first time out of the States, it was great to have all the details arranged and handled for us. So nice to just sit back and enjoy the sights without having to worry about any arrangements! The small group size is great, and tour guides are very helpful. If there were any gliches, we never knew it because Rolinka kept everything going so smoothly. As my husband said, she was like a swan on a lake - looking very calm on the surface but paddling like crazy under the water.

I really enjoyed the tour. It was a great introduction to Munich, Salzburg and Vienna. It was, however, very rushed. But it had to be to cover the sites and atmosphere of these cities in the time allotted. I think I would recommend this tour be bumped up to 10 days. Some of the walking tours were a little repetitive, as well. We walked some areas of the cities with both Rolinka and our local guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I don't know that I had a "wow" moment. Having never been to Europe, it was all amazing to me. Plus, being a student of history - I am a history teacher, soon to be retired - I especially enjoyed the royal residences and palaces. The opulence of the Catholic churches also was fascinating. I found all three cities easy to get around in; the people were friendly; and the food was amazing, and, surprisingly to me, very affordable."

Rolinka, our Guide, is very seasoned and delightful - her knowledge and leadership made this trip very special for us all. She made sure to add some extra experiences for us which we all appreciated. I loved this tour. It was as good as the Paris & the heart of France. With one exception - the afternoon in Salzburg. I loved the eidel weiss bakery, the best experience of the trip, but Salzburg itself was AWFUL. It's my least favorite European city I've ever been to, and I've been to around 50 different cities. In Salzburg, there were all of these tours, museums, cathedrals, but they were all mediocre and the people were unfriendly. I'd really recommend limiting the time in Salzburg .

The tour was great! Carlos was an excellent guide. Amazing sights and experiences. The only negative thing I would say is that the entire tour felt rushed a bit. Had my daughter and I not come early a few days to Munich and stayed a few days in Vienna after the tour ended, we would have missed so much of what these great cities have to offer. Consideration should be made to expanding the tour, say 10 or 12 days to provide more time to explore, considering the effort made to get to Europe to begin with. The tour didn't disappoint, however.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely the Rococo church, the Wieskirche, in the middle of no where. NOt only was it beautiful, but the peaceful surroundings made it a nice contrast to having spent time in Munich. This trip was our 25th anniversary gift to each other (although it was a few years late). My expectations were surpassed. We experienced more of Europe than we could have alone. I tried to arrange a trip on my own and found it overwhelming so I looked up your tours and found we could be put on the waiting list. In a couple weeks we were notified we could join the group. The tour was everything we expected and more. We enjoyed the mixture of guided/structured activities and free time. The things we did were very much what we wanted to do with very little that wasn't on our 'want' list. And, our hotels were an absolute delight to open the door for the first time and see what was inside and the window views

"We followed Rick's advise and took two days to ourselves before and after the guided trip. We couldn't afford the posh hotel in center city of Munich that we stayed in on the tour so we used another suggestion from the Rick Steves' guide book and stayed just outside the city center. We took the U-Bahn in on our first morning. When we got off at Odeonplatz and rode the escalator up...wow doesn't even cover it. When we decided to book a trip to Europe and decided that it would be best for us to book a tour, I was worried that meant we'd be spending most of our time viewing Europe from a bus, staying in a different hotel every night, and hustling through each of the sites. "How can there be just one favorite "wow" moment when there were so many! Was it the beauty and opulence of Neuchwanstein Castle, the tranquility of Lake Hallstatt, or the comraderie at the numerous Beer Gardens. I don't have a favorite. The WHOLE TRIP was my favorite!"

The tour was fantastic, everything I hoped for and much, much more. I was prepared for a few bumps in the road after signing on for "no grumps," but that NEVER happened!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"1) The signing assistant at the cooking school in Salzburg where we made apple strudel. She shocked us with the aria Queen of the Night from Mozart's Magic Flute! She was superb, gave us chills. 2) The Salt Mine in Halstatt, a Fabulous plan B in place of a boat ride on the Lake. It was exciting, surprising, challenging, and fun! The view of the Lake Hallstatt region was STUNNING! 3) The Third Man Museum, another plan B. Fascinating and provacative. Gerhard was a delight!"

The entire tour was wonderful. We had a great guide in Donald and a group of fellow travelers who were congenial - absolutely no whiners in the bunch. Missed the back stage tour of the Vienna Opera House, due to rehearsal needed for the premiere of a new opera that day, but we had an interesting tour of The Third Man museum instead. Since my sister and I stayed for an extra day, we were able to take opera tour on Sunday on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I enjoyed everything, but I especially enjoyed walking through the small village of Hallstatt. It as beautiful. Also, by good fortune (or Donald's extraordinary leadership) we arrived in Mundsee on Ascension Day and were greeted as we came walked up the main street by a parade and marching band."

Outstanding tour. The format of orientation when arriving in a new city coupled with local tour guides (all of whom were excellent) and then free time to explore on our own really works. Our guide, Donald White, did an outstanding job with both his narratives and approach such as playing music from Sound of Music while we traveled to different sights from the movie. Also, getting all required tickets and avoiding standing in line made the tour that much better.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to pick out one but Neuschwanstein castle with paragliders flying over the cliffs was great."

As usual, never disappointed in a RS tour. This was my 3rd RS tour. The other two being England and Italy. I tell everyone, a Rick Steve's tour is a perfect blend of tour time and free time. The guides are terrific in providing suggestions for free time with great details. The are lovely little, unexpected surprises with the tours also. The guides take such good care of us and do a great job of keeping everyone on track, in a kind way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The unexpected shift in plan, doing the Salt Mine tour at Lake Halstat instead of Lake boat tour. It was great Donald could shift our plan and come up with a great alternative. Truly, there are too many "WOW" moments. Seeing the beautiful landscape of the countryside in Austria, hilltop castles and watching an opera on a huge outdoor screen....the list goes on."

This was a great tour! We were blessed with great weather, a great guide in Donald and a great group of people on the tour. The local guides were all very good, especially Gerhard who was fascinating in telling us about post WW2 Vienna. My appreciation of Germany and Austria was definitely increased from this experience. Donnie was great at giving us just the right about of information.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many "Wow" moments on this tour and I'll list a few. Looking at Neuschwanstein Castle from Mary's Bridge, the view of the Alps and countryside as we drove from each location, the view of Hallstatt and the lake from the salt mines. Also, we got to slide down 2 bannisters in the salt mines at Hallstatt which was an unexpected twist."

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your online customer account. One month prior to the tour departure,  you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your customer account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Munich (MUC) and out of Vienna (VIE) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves guidebook.
