Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Bavaria

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Munich for a "Welcome to Bavaria" meeting. After an orientation walk through our neighborhood, we'll get introduced to Munich's pedestrian-friendly historic core. This evening we'll enjoy a hearty dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 2: Marvelous Munich

This morning we'll join a local guide for a fascinating walk through Munich's Old Town, weaving together the history and traditions of Munich and Bavaria. We'll visit the legendary Hofbräuhaus beerhall and explore the centuries-old Viktualienmarkt, famous for traditional crafts and gourmet food stalls — your guide can point out some local specialties along the way. The rest of the day is yours to explore the English Garden, take in a museum, or — on winter tours — simply savor the surrounding gemütlichkeit (comfy-coziness) of Munich's Christmas markets. Tonight, you'll be free to perfect your prost with new friends at one of Munich's historic beerhalls, where you can hoist a liter-sized mug of beer and a pretzel as big as your head.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 3: Scenic Drive into Austria

Get your cameras ready! This morning we'll drive through the picturesque villages and lush rolling hills of Bavaria as we head into Austria. On our way to Salzburg, we'll visit Trumer Pils, an award-winning brewery crafting pilsners for more than 400 years. Afterwards, we'll have lunch together before continuing on to charming Salzburg, the city of splendid gardens, Baroque churches, and one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses. We'll settle into our quaint hotel before taking a neighborhood orientation walk and sharing dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 4: Splendid Salzburg

Salzburg is the perfect town for a walking tour, and together with our local expert, that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs that line Getreidegasse and through picturesque gardens, and going for Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral. We'll then get a lesson on two Austrian staples: We'll learn how to make the amazing, appley treat apfelstrudel and appreciate the fine art of drinking schnapps. The rest of your day is free for hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or (on winter tours) wandering through the Christmas markets. Your free evening is perfect for a concert featuring the work of Salzburg's favorite son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 5: Lovely Lakes and Hallstatt

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. On our way, we'll stop at the mountain retreat of Kaiservilla, where Emperor Franz Josef signed the declaration that kicked off World War I. Next, we'll skip like stones across the pristine waters of Austria's Salzkammergut lake district on a boat cruise, enjoying the breathtaking lakeside villages and craggy mountain vistas. This afternoon we'll settle into our cozy lakeside lodging, where you'll be free to commune with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines. This evening we'll gather to share dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt.

Day 6: Melk Abbey, the Danube and Vienna

Today we'll take another scenic drive to the Danube Valley, where we'll tour the artistic treasures and Baroque wonders of the Benedictine abbey at Melk. Then we'll cruise Austria's prettiest stretch of the Danube River and check if it really is blue. We'll finish our day in the one-time capital of a powerful empire — and our tour's grand finale: extravagant, opulent Vienna. After checking into our hotel we'll take a walk, orienting you to historic Vienna and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 7: Historic Vienna

We'll begin our day by joining a local guide for a walking tour that takes us to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Our walking tour will continue with a behind-the-scenes peek inside Vienna's famous opera house. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus, or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

This was my first Rick Steves tour, so I was not sure what to expect. My experience has exceeded what I had hoped for. From the welcome reception, to the farewell dinner, the tour was well organized and professionally managed. If you are looking for the camaraderie of a group experience, there was plenty of that. If you prefer to strike out on your own, there was time built-in for that too. All the while, our guide was there to provide expert recommendations and alternate options.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Munich, walking west from our hotel along an avenue filled with shops and restaurants, you could sense that Christmas was in the air. Everything was beautifully decorated for the season, and you could feel the "spirit" in the pedestrians as they hurried by. However, this could not prepare you for what awaited ahead on the Marienplatz. Walking through the arch of the old town hall, the square opens up to the biggest Christmas Market you could imagine. It seemed to go on forever. Truly magical!"

This was our 4th Rick Steves' tour and it was fantastic. Once again, all directions for getting from airport to train to hotel were perfect and we had no troubles. Our tour guide, Holger was personable, funny and was an astute manager of the different personalities in our group. There was a good mix of organized activities and free time - Holger was so familiar with everyplace we visited, he was a wealth of information and suggestions for meals and shopping.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The strudel making was awesome. Boat ride around Lake Hallstat Wine tasting surprise in Melk The beautiful Christmas/evergreen decorations I have to admit, this trip was full of a lot of reflection and not as much 'wow' due to the WWII history, but this was the equivalent of wow."

Great mix of structured and free time, the local guides were engaging and funny and a nice accompaniment to Holger who did a great job keeping everyone involved and checking in on folks.Hotels were great! Nice mix of bucket-list destinations and off the beaten path quaint towns and sights. Neuschwanstein creates mixed feelings. While being a bucket-list item the experience is difficult(long ride and poor guides, limited access, feels rushed). Maybe a night in Fussen to break it up?

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Several, loved the excursions to the organic cheese making/dairy farm, Bad Tolz, wine tasting in Melk, and Salzburg strudel making. Ludmila from the Melk Abbey was delightful and the town of Melk equally quaint. A rooftop drink at the Steiner Hotel in Salzburg was fun, a Mozart concert at the Hohensalzburg Fortress was lots of fun, and Holger popping in and out of our city walk in Salzburg on his rental bike was a funny shtick! The Wieskirche was beautiful and a nice excursion."

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to everyone. All of the logistics were coordinated perfectly and we even had a few "surprise" excursions from the schedule.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Third Man Museum in Austria. Many other museums will show art or various historical artifacts; however, The Third Man Museum showed how World War II impacted the population at a personal level. It illuminated facts that I did not know and are not widely discussed."

This was my 5th Rick Steves Tour and I had the wonderful opportunity to share it with my adult daughter. As always the tour was exceptional, our guide, Holger, was the absolute best. Holger shared his wealth of information with us, and kept us entertained as well. His call in "talk" show was a lot of fun on the bus, but he also provided us with maps, brochures, local restaurants, and information regarding concerts and other venues of interest!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As usual there were several "wow" moments for me. Seeing and enjoying Salzburg and Hallstatt were high on my list. The small village of Bad Tolz was a beautiful stop along the way, where we enjoyed a small Christmas Market and wonderful Gluwein! The Third Man Museum, in Vienna, was one of the extremely emotional lessons in history that Rick Steves is so good at providing. I had watched the movie before the trip, but the reality of what you learn, hear and see at this museum is exceptional."

This was my first Rick Steves tour and it was absolutely wonderful! Our guide, Holger, was excellent. He was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. The longer bus days were broken up nicely with surprise stops at Bad Tolz and a wonderful dairy farm. We had a great mix of group and free time.

This was my first time out of the United States so my first trip to Europe. I could not have asked for a better introduction to Europe. Holger and all of our local guides did a tremendous job. I had an amazing time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Honestly, there are so many "wow" moments for me. Having never been to Europe, the history in every location was awing to me - the building ages atop structures in Salzburg for instance. The views, the treasuries, cathedrals - all amazing. I probably was most surprised by the church in the meadow and the bone chapel, both so spectacular, ornate, and unexpected. As a huge Christmas fan, I also loved the amazing lights, decorations, trees, and markets."

The overall tour was great. Munich, Salzberg and Vienna presented just as advertised. The Christmas markets and snow were an added plus. And, surprisingly, the weather for a December tour of Southern Germany and Austria cooperated quite nicely. (I will give RS tour credit for the weather...) There was a good mix of time together on the tour and free time for us to explore on our own. This is our fourth RS tour and it definitely met our expectations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The cooking school/ apple strudel experience including the entertaining singing at the end was an unexpected moment. A close second would be the visit to the Silent Night chapel. It might have been the time of year, but I was surprised by the experience."

This tour is great during the month of December if you are interested in the Christmas Markets. The colder weather makes packing light a little more challenging but we did fine. This was our seventh Rick Steves tour so we kind of knew what to expect and the tour exceeded all our expectations! The city walks and local guides were all very knowledgeable.

My Overall Tour Experience was LIFE CHANGING. I could not have wished for a better experience- The weather was perfect, our Tour Guide (Matthias) was wonderfully knowledgeable and kind, and everyone in the Tour Group seemed to get along well. The sites we saw are too numerous to list, but each was more amazing than the last.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My Favorite "WOW" Moment was watching the Marienplatz Glockenspiel performance. My Husband and I frequently watch Rick Steves on PBS Sunday mornings- We would watch the episode with the Glockenspiel and say "one day we'll visit there..." It was surreal to be standing in the Town Square and seeing it in real life! A Big Thank You to Matthias for making certain our Group was able to see the Glockenspiel in time."

Tour was outstanding from beginning to the end. Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna glow with Christmas lights and Christmas markets. All three cities are gorgeous at night time when the churches and historic buildings are illuminated. Matti kept us informed about all the places we visited and he provided many ideas of what we could do during our free time. If I had not been on this tour, I would not have known about the Third Man exhibit in Vienna, which we visited. Unforgettable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking in the snow at Neuschwanstein and in Hallstatt. It was truly a winter wonderland. Making apple strudel in Salzburg at the Edelweiss Cooking School and the young woman who sang to us there was a "wow" moment. Having Gerhard Strassgschwandtner as our local guide in Vienna."

Our guide Daniela was excellent. She was informative and kept coming up with great little surprises for us. We liked the tour structure with the group dinners one night and the next night on your own. Staying two nights in a place was good as well so you didn't feel as if you were constantly packing and unpacking. The hotel picks in Munich and Hallstadt were well beyond any expectations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several but going Hallstadt I'd rank first, especially on the day they held their annual Christmas market, was wonderful. Best of all was during our group dinner Daniela demonstrated how to cut up a whole fish for eating. Who knew that being given a "fish cheek" was a sign on endearment! In second place, was getting to see the Krampus and St. Nicholas roaming the streets in Salzburg- made it a night to remember!"

All of my expectations were exceeded. Hotels were located in really convenient locations. I appreciate the Rick Steves philosophy of semi independent travel, the free time for personal interest and the suggestions of free time activities. Our group came together really well and Rolinka was a fantastic tour guide. I wish someone had recorded her giving us a Subway lesson in Vienna, so I could share it with my friends who are afraid to travel to Europe and say "See, it really is that easy".

After taking a tour in 2018 that was a very poor experience, we heard Rick deliver a presentation in San Francisco and were encouraged that not all tours follow the cow trail of ordinary. I took this tour in 2017 and enjoyed this slightly modified itinerary better. Rolinka also added value with her knowledge and expertise. Plus, the Munich guide was much better this time around. The tweaks to itinerary over the last two years seemed worthwhile overall. See q16 for more on this. I arrived early so was able to visit Garmisch ahead of time and have a bit of independence. Thanks for offering enjoyable, wonderful opportunities to learn.

"Wow was definitely the Krampuslauf in Hallstatt. I selected these specific dates as I was aware that the Krampuslauf only ever occurs on December 5 in Hallstatt. Good fortune that I was able to visit then. Very thankful that the lovely village was relatively unscathed in the fire the week before. Another Wow was in Munich the day before the tour when I attended the Night Fever service at the Alter Peter church. What a contrast to the raucous market outside!"

Experiencing Christmas markets in Europe has been a bucket list item for me so I signed up for this tour last year. I could easily do this tour in other seasons as well because of the history, culture and fun activities that are packed into the itinerary. It was a magical time with a congenial group of people and Rolinka, our guide, waved her magic wand at our orientation meeting and the group seemed to gel almost spontaneously at our first group dinner. My 7th tour and I'm planning my 8th.

"As usual, there were multiple Wow moments. The Baroque church in the meadow and Ludwig's castles surrounded with snow, organic cheese farm, Melk Abbey and the tour of the church there as well as the library. Also, Salzburg and the strudel-making class and the Mozart dinner concert Rolinka arranged for us. The Third Man Museum in Vienna was a stunner and our time with Gerhard whose passion is to tell the story of post-war Vienna. The Zither player at our Farewell dinner in the Heurigen."

I was happy to visit MSV. I am most interested in how the past affects the present. So, visits to Munich and Vienna were of most interest to me. I would have been happy to spend more time there. I could easily pass up visits to pretty places of less immediate relevance (e.g., Neuschwanstein castle, Melk Abbey, and, Hallstatt and its boat trip) to could dig deeper into the history. The experiences (e.g.', strudel in Salzburg)and "surprises" were the most memorable part of the trip.

"Many "wow" moments: Christmas markets in every city with twinkling lights, gluwein, and gemutlichkeit. The Glockenspiel in Munich. The beautiful churches; the wintry Weiskirche was stunning. The Eidelweiss cooking school and the delicious goulash and apple streudel. I was in tears when the opera singer sang; she is so talented and the ambience was perfect. Hallstatt, with the wonderful hotel, the Krampus Festival, and the bone chapel. Vienna's Augustinian Church Mass was extraordinary!"

This was our 4th Rick Steves tour and it didn't disappoint. Our guide Rolinka, effortlessly entertained and educated us on a beautiful journey through a very Christmasy Bavaria! With a short window for vacation, you can't beat the 8-9 day tours. The experience is rich with interesting new sights, sounds, tastes and treats. You are never rushed along, yet, when you get home, you can't believe all that you did in such a short amount of time. Great guide, great fellow travelers, great time!

Rolinka was an excellent tour guide and our group was very friendly. Our individual tour guides were also fantastic especially Daniel & Gerhard. The tourist attractions like the palaces and castles were fantastic but so was the food including the beef goulash at the soup kitchen in Munich, the snitzel dinner and apple strudel in Salzburg, the trout in Halstatt and the pizza at Melk Abbey. I also enjoyed learning about the history especially in Vienna at the Third Man Museum.

First tour with a group and loved it all. I esp loved the local guides and the tips and tricks Rolinka and local guides gave us. And how we always knew how to get back to the hotels when we went off on our own. Also liked the special events we could chose to go on.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I feel silly but it was during the Apple Strudel making lunch in Salzburg. The owners sister sang for us and then had us sing Do. re. mi. Then she had us sing Edelweiss. I got very emotional when I realized I was singing Edelweiss in Austria!"

This was our first Rick Steves Tour, and our first guided tour ever, so we did not know what to expect. We chose a guided tour because we had a limited time, and wanted to see as much as possible, and because, as the tour planner, I did not have time to spend putting together a plan for travel just now. The tour was comprehensive, the information provided was very helpful (ie - how to get to the hotel from the airport, etc), and we saw so much. In that way it met all my expectations.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably Hallstatt. It was so much more beautiful than I even expected. The hotel was a total wow, and a nice respite mid-trip. I would have liked another day in Hallstatt, to explore and hike. The Mozart dinner experience was wonderful in Strasburg. We enjoyed the Edelweis cooking school much more than we thought. We visited Dachau by ourselves, and that was very impactful. Finally, on our own, we had lunch in a cafe in Vienna, just relaxing, great food, coffee, dessert and people-watching."

Torben did a great job leading our tour and providing historical and modern day context. The congenial travel group was smaller than usual and good fun to be with. It was a short and fun trip. There is a lot to still process. I found Torben's narrative helpful. His helped me understand the culture and struggles better. This group failed to achieve the cohesiveness that my prior trips to Italy did and it seamed to be less laid back. These out of the way places are being discovered by more people making it challenging for your organization.

This vacation was an absolute dream. I loved the mix of guided walks with time to explore on our own. It was great not having to worry about obtaining tickets or transportation to popular sites. Favorite "WOW" moment

"The boat cruise at Lake Hallstatt was my favorite "wow" moment. The weather was perfect, providing beautiful reflections of the surroundings on the lake. The quiet little town was a welcome respite from the hustle of Munich and Salzburg. It was fantastic! It all starts with Nico our guide. He was very personable, entertaining and knowledgeable. He was just plain fun. As far as the tour goes, we loved how it was laid out...city walks etc to get acquainted with the area then you would have time to explore on your own... feeling comfortable enough going out on our own.

Fantastic. We loved every location we visited, every hotel, all of the sites and the people we traveled with. We had a fantastic tour guide that led us, gave us great insights into the local areas and customs, and made the tour fun. We didn't want the tour to end.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is really tough because this was our first trip to Europe. Dachau was very memorable (traveled there on our own the morning before the tour started, thanks to wonderful directions in the tour book). Oktoberfest in Munich was awesome, as was Neuschwanstein Castle and Lake Hall Hallstatt. We read about the 3rd Man Museum in a recent German Life magazine and we really glad this was added to our tour. The best part may have just been walking in Munich and realizing we finally made it to Europe!"

This was my first trip to Europe so I don't have any other experiences to compare to but this tour exceeded my expectations. I felt like there was a good balance of scheduled activities and time to explore on your own. I really enjoyed learning the history of these areas and taking in the scenic beauty. A was a great way to travel and be able to hit the highlights and have all your travel arrangements made for you. I will definitely consider another Rick Steve's tour in the near future!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was in awe of the beauty in the area around the Neuschwanstein castle. We couldn't have asked for a better weather day with clear skies and temps around 70 degrees. The view from Mary's bridge and from the castle itself were breathtaking. This is exactly what I hoped to experience when I signed up for this tour....it didn't disappoint!"

"My "wow" moment was the entire trip. We waffled back and forth about which tour company to use and we were so happy we went with Rick Steves. This was our fourth Rick Steves tour, and like the others, it was well organized, composed of interesting people, and led by an excellent guide. We had so much fun we have to look through our photographs to fully realize just how packed with exciting adventures out tour was.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had a number of "wow" moments, but the one that stands out is Oktoberfest in Munich. I had expectations of its scale, but it really is about 100x what you think. And, being German, it's amazingly well organized. We had a solid 8 hours of fun. Close runner up, and the most interesting thing on our tour, was the 3rd man museum in Vienna. A truly unique exploration of the city and its role during and after WWII."

The tour was fantastic. We had travelled to Italy 2 years ago on a series of tours set up for us by a travel agent. The anxiety of traveling to each town, locating the tour guide and then trying to find your way around after the scheduled daily tour while trying to make sure that my wife was having a good time was, in a word, nerve wracking. Our guide Matti was warm, welcoming and filled the entire tour with useful information and wonderful stories.

THE BIGEST COMPLAINT WAS IN MANY OF THE AUSTRAIN AND GERMAN BATHROOMS, THE BATHTUBS WERE VERY SLIPPERY AND DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY WHEN MOST OF THEM HAVE NO SHOWERS. WE HAVE TRAVELED MANY TIMES IN THE PAST WITH RICK'A GROUPS TO EUROPE, YET THIS PROBLEM WAS NEVER THIS PRONOUNCED.

Absolutely enjoyable. Educational and fun, and the pace was very comfortable. I think our guide Torben was particularly gifted as both a tour guide and a history teacher; his talks on the way to different cities/sites helped put things in perspective and as a result, I got more out of it. The local guides were outstanding-- knowledgeable and personable. The folks on our tour were wonderful to get to know. I would highly recommend this tour.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our short tour. There was a good mix of ages, and people from different areas of the country. We all seemed to get along and share a common trait of wanting to experience a cultural awareness as we toured new cities, met locals and gained a historical perceptive on events that occurred over centuries and more recently. We appreciated having a wonderful tour guide in Torben, and we thoroughly enjoyed the local guides, especially Patrick and Gerhardt.

"Probably Lake Hallstatt. We saw so many amazing places, such as: Neuschwanstein, the Hofburg Palace, The Hofbrauhaus House, the Old Town Tours in Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna, but overall Lake Hallstatt was very special, especially since we had beautiful weather. The location of where we stayed in Lake Hallstatt was amazing as well."

This trip was everything we expected PLUS more! Even tough we knew the itinerary in advance, there were extra "surprises" such as a visit to an organic dairy farm on the edge of the alps that wowed us. Our group meshed well and even though I sometimes struggle with remembering names, I knew everyone on a first name basis by mid-week. Excellent guides (local as well as the trip guide), wonderful accommodations, and then there is the food! We WILL be doing future Rick Steves trips!

Please do not take my Very Good grade on the tour as a complaint on the tour. I thought Munich and Vienna were above outstanding and Salzburg was between Outstanding and Very Good. I was not as big a fan for Neuschwanstein or Melk Abbey and viditing the "Disney Castle" made for a long, long bus ride to Salzburg. Overall very, very beautiful countryside and the ride on the Danube brought old and newer castles in view. I would recommend this tour to others and will do so if anyone asks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Vienna and all the experiences there was my "wow" moment or "wow" days. The 3rd Man Museum was a signature moment, the Hapsburg palaces took me back hundreds of years, the Opera was a once in a lifetime experience and to think it was a Verdi opera. The Stephansplatz Cathedral across the street from the hotel was majestic and the hotel was outstanding. I do not know if I will ever be in Vienna again but I hope I have the opportunity. It was fantastic!!"

The agenda of the tour effectively breaks up large city, small town and country-side venues. Being in the center of both Munich and Vienna allows easy walking access to most sites. Small-town Salzburg and the lake-side village of Hallstadt are nothing but charming. This tour might be a bit heavy on history, and I say that as a lover of history. Commentary on sites and locales that give context, current events, and observations might be educational and interesting to the wider audience.

Our guide, Torben, so knowledgeable and organized to make the tour exceptional from the start. We saw a variety of sites and learned along the way. I felt it was a great mix of exploring with the group as well as having time to go off on your own. It was a great, great trip. I was particularly pleased with the group. We had such a wonderful time together and made some good friends. Torben was a fabulous guide for the trip, and I found his historical insights to be really helpful. The overnight stay in Hallstatt was refreshing. What a gorgeous village! I think Vienna was my favorite of the three cities. The Schonbrunn Palace was stunning. I found it much more enjoyable than the Hapsburg Palace in town.

The tour was great. More than I expected. The tour went as planned but there were many other "little" adds that were not described in the itinerary such as a meat and cheese tasting, a vist to a local farm and many of the "little" adds of food that our tour guide did ! Torben our guide always on time, kept the group together and made good efforts to connect us all.

"Many moments were awesome but if I had to pick just ONE...probably would be our day in Hallstadt. My first Rick Steves tour was a fantastic experience. Being a relatively 'green' traveler abroad, the tour handled all the logistics in a way that made me feel safe and taken care of. More valuable, the tour taught me many travel skills that i will be able to use in a more independent manner in the future. I feel confident that i could return to any of the cities visited and get along very well by myself with local transportation, type of accommodations, safety, packing, etc.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I love that RS tours try to do things that other providers would never consider. For example, our visit to The Third Man museum in Vienna, and the accompanying 'Austria's Role in WW2' exhibit was the most eye-opening excursion. A perfect blend of larger and smaller towns and the overall Bavarian region and countryside. I loved learning about the history, food, culture, and seeing the sights. Excellent and informative guides and a very nice balance of both group time and individual exploration time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Gerhard Strassgschwandtner's "Third Man Museum" was a revelation. Not simply for the movie aspect but because his extended museum made wartime Vienna come to life. This was a perfect encapsulated way to get immersed in the history and realities of those important years and Austria's part in it. He also gave us a tour of some of Vienna itself and his knowledge and personal insights were fantastic. We got lucky - time with Gerhard was a treasure! I hope others can experience this."

Wonderful experience! Everything was well planned by our tour guide, Nico Favoreel or he made quick adjustments when needed. We had a full tour, 28 people plus 2 tour guides which sometimes felt a bit too big. Fortunately everyone was very prompt and minus any grouches. My husband and I learned a lot, saw a lot, heard a lot of great music, ate some wonderful food, make new friends and walked a lot.

"The beautiful, peaceful, tiny town of Hallstatt was absolutely gorgeous. It gave me a sense of history from how it was formed geographically over the centuries. The salt mine tour was very interesting and helped me better understand the extreme importance of salt. I woke up early the next morning with the aroma of fresh bread wafting through my windows. I had a cold, especially in the beginning, that got better as the week goes on. The Rick Steves special features allowed us to see the be sites in rather a short period of time. The folks were nice and we had a very good time with some of them. In Vienna - dining at the bomb shelter restaurant was pretty cool - the electricity went out and we spent the 2nd half of the evening in shadowy candelight. A perfect note to end our 'Lights out' Rick Steves tour, literally. Prost!

The atmosphere and music, opera, with the singers in costume while eating under chandeliers, was the perfect moment for being in Salzburg. When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and December is a good time to take a Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna tour. However, the months of May, June, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Summer, while the most crowded, has the best weather. Winter is cold but there are no crowds, and the Christmas markets and concert season are in full swing.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure,  you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Munich (MUC) and out of Vienna (VIE) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves guidebook.
