"My wow moment was when we visited "The Third Man" museum. I did not know about Austria's dark history during WW11. I appreciated being caught up on that dark chapter at this time when our own country is facing the next election. "

Touring beautiful and historic Munich and Austria with a small group of friendly travelers and an organized relaxed guide is a perfect vacation. I enjoy seeing and doing more without the hassle of arranging all of the travel, lodging, and meals. This tour has a great balance of scheduled tours (city walking tours, brewery, dairy farm, abbey, museums, etc) and free time to pursue your own interests. I highly recommend this tour.

"As we took our three teenagers, I loved how much they enjoyed the Salzwelten (salt mine) tour in Hallstatt. As the oldest salt mine in the world, it was interesting, and it is set among some gorgeous scenery. "

We had an amazing week in Germany and Austria. The trip was carefully planned and everything worked perfectly. This was our first tour with a group, and it will certainly not be our last Rick Steves trip.

This tour covered a lot in a relatively short time which is not easy to pull off, but it ended up being very satisfying and enjoyable. The curated experiences in Munich, Salzburg, Lake Hallstatt and Vienna were very well chosen and guided, and the travel from one venue to the next always included some additional stops and tours, all of which were interesting and fun. Our guides were outstanding---fun and professional. Hotels and meals were tops. Great balance of scheduled and free time.

"It's impossible to pick just one of many "wow" moments. I love living history and especially enjoyed learning first hand about the opulences of the Habsburg dynasty and their prominent role in history over the centuries. Likewise, I was especially taken by the guided tours in Munich and Vienna which shed light on the role of these two cities in the dark days of the Third Reich. I also very much enjoyed the iconic Bavarian fun, food, and beer in the beer gardens and beerhalls of Munich. "

We loved the best week tour of Munich, Salzburg, Melk Abbey and Vienna. It was short but filled with sites and group talks we would not have discovered in our own.

My tour guide, Andrea, was phenomenal. She was a lovely storyteller and balanced giving our group interesting facts about the town in addition to telling her own personal stories. She also did a great job of making the group feel like a family. There wasn't a single place on the tour that made me wish we had done something else. Everything was so thoughtfully planned out, plus I enjoyed how trying the local specialties was often built into our group activities and meals!

I loved every minute! The guides were very knowledgeable and engaging. Our hotels were centrally located, and we had an opportunity to get “off the beaten” path without sacrificing some must-see tourist sights. The other travelers in the group were lovely, and Andrea did a great job including everyone.

Overall, the tour exceeded expectations. A very nice mix of big city (or small town) highlights with intimate experiences along the way. Our guides in specific cities were knowledgeable and engaging, but Barbara - she was absolutely amazing. She made it all come alive - giving nudges of encouragement to fully experience a city/event while offering a home-base sense of support.

"There were so many but for different reasons. We took our free afternoon in Munich to visit Dachau, which was “wow” for a ver sobering reason. The views in Hallstatt were a “wow” respite from the city and the heavier topics discussed."

This 8 day tour was fast paced and covered a multitude of city/countryside sites. Besides the group tours & meals, we had ample free time for our personal activity choices. Our guide Barbara was outstanding. Besides sharing her love & depth of knowledge of the landscape, she plied us with candy/cookie/food goodies & treats. Our mixed age group of 28 was comprised of families, couples & a single. The local guides were well versed in the history, culture & love of their localities. Great trip!

"I had 2 "wow" moments: 1. The environs of Halstatt--the swans floating on the lake, the picturesque houses and flower gardens of the town, the gully-washer of a rainstorm some of us experienced as we hiked down from the mountains and--most of all--the 6 am church bells pealing right outside our hotel room windows. 2. The caliber and seemingly endless number of the museums of Munich, Salzburg and Vienna. Thanks, Barbara, for the surprise visit to the Klimt."

Lots to see and do. Hotels were nice. Tasty food at the group meals. (I would prefer less goulash, more schnitzel!) Liked Salzburg, didn't expect to. I even liked the bus rides. Interesting local experts, friendly tour members, and we were well taken care of by our tour guide. Don't know how Rick will replace Hallstatt next year. It's a special place despite the daytripper hoards.

In the past we've taken tours that were fast paced and very regimented, we wanted to get away from that. Our tour was the perfect balance of guided touring and free time experience. George was the perfect guide, informative but not overbearing . He give us great advice about local culture and attractions. Another thing I liked was that when we were on the tour bus it was not crowded at all and we could spread out.

"The "wow"moment would have to be Lake Hallstatt. Talk about picture post card views from every angle. From the boat ride around the lake to the ride up on the vernacular to the viewing platform it was one of the most scenic places I've been."

Our guide Michael was absolutely outstanding: knowledgeable, friendly, quick to assist with any questions or problems and highly skilled at shepherding 28 adults. The orientation we received by our guide at the start of each stay as to the location of a safe ATM, a grocery store and pharmacy was very helpful. The pace was quick but we felt always left a good amount of time to explore things on our own. The buses were comfortable and provided time to relax, talk with new friends.

We enjoyed this tour, especially our time in Salzburg and Lake Hallstatt. Our guide, Jim, was incredibly organized and detailed and provided us with great information about the history and culture of each area we visited. We loved getting to know our other tour members and have great memories of our time together in each location and at our group dinners.

Overall very good. The laundry options were less than convenient - closed early during the week; Vienna hotel could not assist w/Friday afternoon arrival - their next pick ups were not avail until Monday; 'just around the corner' was NOT just around the corner; and one of the Salzburg hotels that offer reasonably priced 'service' only do so for the 1st 4-5 people, all others out of luck. We were warned about the attitude in Vienna - but WOW, not impressed with Kaiserhof staff - RUDE.

"The sobering Dachau concentration camp tour as recommended by RSE along with the tour of Kaiservilla and the actual desk where declaration of war starting WWI was signed along with the Third man museum about post WWII Vienna brought home a Wow that seems appropriate for our time. Guide Jane was a gem! She added extra touches such as drawing #s for special little gifts during the bus trips. The whole trip was a learning experience as well as entertaining. The chosen restaurants were outstanding. The Third Man Museum and its owner captivated me The visit there made me want to learn more and read more about that time period...which I did. Perfect timing for good weather. Such a good group; it was hard to say goodbye.

As a solo traveler, I felt comfortable in the group right away. Not a moment was wasted in the itinerary, and I can’t believe how much we fit in each day. There was a nice balance of curated activities and free time, which was important to me, and I’m glad it was as advertised. Our guide, Jana, was a gem - knowledgeable and fun. I wasn’t expecting the added education and little surprises she provided along the way, and it added even more to the experience. Already planning my next RS adventure!

"The high quality local guides - I especially enjoyed Gerhard in Vienna and Birgit in Munich. The architecture and stories of postwar restorations in every city. The WWII history brought to life - the Stumbling Stones in Salzburg were particularly poignant. I loved exploring St. Peter’s Cemetery in Salzburg . . . the boat tour on Lake Hallstatt . . . My most unexpected was the Third Man Museum in Vienna. It wasn’t on my radar before the trip and I could have easily spent a whole day there. "

The first thing is our tour guide, Jana, who was amazing at her job, making everyone feel welcome from the very first orientation. She was a wealth of knowledge and her manner is perfect for being a tour guide, very concerned and helpful, always there for whatever we all needed. The extra tour guides ijn the cities were also quite good, and I came away with learning a lot of history and about their cities. I loved that everything was included in the tour, activities, transportation tickets.

Communication: Online sign-up was easy, and the pre-trip material was comprehensive and helpful. Our guide George was also an excellent communicator--each day he summarized our activities, on the bus he gave us interesting lectures en-route, and he was helpful with meal and shopping tips. Itinerary: The itinerary was the perfect mesh of group activities and on-your-own time. The off-the-beaten track activities were a delight.

"Being a musician, my "wow" moment came several times during masses I attended. (FYI: I'm not Catholic). Until that time, most classical music was, for me, on the same plane. I studied it, learned it, practiced it, taught it, and enjoyed it. That changed when I heard classical sacred music performed in the rooms and spaces where it was intended to be played and sung. The music came from the choir loft above and behind the service, and it truly sounded like music coming from heaven!"

After a rocky start with flight re-routes due to weather and lost luggage (you're so right, Rick, NEVER check a bag!), my son and I decided to make it part of our adventure to shop like locals for clothing and toiletries. The tour was wonderful, the snow added to the magical feel. The Christmas markets didn't disappoint (we're making apple strudel and gluhwein for Christmas). Andrea and Barbara were great and the local guides were the best. We met some great people. So glad we soldiered on!!

"I expect most people will say Lake Hallstatt, and it was really like being inside a fairy tale, so beautiful. But I was enchanted by Salzburg. It's a thriving city but very homey feeling. "During the apple strudel cooking class, one of the helpers suddenly broke out into song, and sang an aria from a Mozart opera. Being a classically-trained musician, I was immediately drawn into this performance and intrigued. Moments earlier, she was helping us stretch our strudel dough, and now she was belting out an amazing aria. What a treat! This was our 1st Rick Steves tour and it didn't disappoint. The only unfortunate experience was the snow storm in Munich that closed the airport. We missed day 1 of the tour due to that storm and ended up flying into Frankfurt instead and taking a train to Munich.

For tourists from warmer regions, RS should give greater detail of how COLD the region can be & that they don't do anything about snow or ice.

She was able to guide us thru the Christmas markets. michael was so informative. Saltzburg, Halstatt and Vienna were all memorable. As a substitute, Barbara took us on a tour to Schloss Artstetten where Franz Ferdinand and wife are buried. This was our first time with a tour group and it was an awesome experience. Barbara Schifosky was an amazing and personable guide/guru. From practicalities to personalized experiences she was the best. We saw things and met people that we would not be able to see on our own. We survived the historic snowfall in Munich 2023 under the great care of Rick Steves. We had a unique and magical time touring Bavaria and Austria and all of the Christmas Markets. What a treat.

Because this was a one-week tour in November weather, planning and coordination were key. Our tour guide, George, accomplished this perfectly, with just the right balance of group activities and free time to keep us busy but not overwhelmed. Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna are easy to like, but we came away from a visit to the Bio Hofkäserei Fürstenhof dairy farm near Kuchl with an appreciation of not only how Austrians actually live, but what makes them unique.

Big plus was watching the preparations for Christmas markets in Munich and then going to several in Vienna. And who knew Gluwein was so tasty especially on a cold day!

This was my first experience with a tour group. I found that having the travel arrangements and a number of events and meals scheduled took a lot of stress out of my planning. Almost every day included free time to explore the locations on our own. I was blown away by the excellent tour manager, as well as the phenomenal guides used in each of the locations we visited. Our guide Iris was excellent. She was very thorough in her descriptions of the places we toured and has a very pleasant voice to listen to as there is a lot of information and history to absorb. Our group was a good group, on time and communicative so everyone got along great! The meals were mostly enjoyed, traditional food mainly on our nights together, we will not be having schnitzel or sauerkraut for awhile! The breakfasts were excellent! Accommodations were spot on, location location!

This was our first RS tour and it met (or exceeded) all of our expectations. The pre-tour communications were very helpful in setting expectations about attitudes, hotels, and tours, and Rick undersells the hotels in particular. All 4 hotels we stayed in were amazing - great location, good sized rooms, quaint and local, clean. Jana, our tour guide, was great in managing the group and being super clear with deadlines, and we loved the history lessons on the bus. And the sites of course were great

This was our second RS tour and loved it. Our tour guide Jana was excellent, very informative and made the tour fun. We also liked our guide in training, Collette, who shared some of her experiences with us. We started the tour as a group of strangers and by the end became a group of friends. From Munich, Salzburg to Vienna, every place was amazing. Enjoyed the history behind each city.

Munich-Salzburg-Vienna was a terrific trip. Highlights for me were the Salzburg Fortress concert (on our own but recommended by our guide), the cruise on Lake Hallstatt, and the Third Man Museum. I loved the pacing and the spacing. I usually spent the time on our own with other tour members in assorted combinations.

After our sixth tour, a disappointing tour to Scotland with James, it was good to renew our enthusiasm with a wonderful tour. After Scotland, we even tried a river cruise, so it was great being back on an RS tour. Anja, our guide, was great. The people on the tour were diverse, very compatible, and fun. The weather was perfect, and the local guides were good. The crowds in the cities are getting bigger but we dealt with it. We are now looking forward to tour number eight.

Anja was a delightful host, knowing when to give people a break and when to present information. I also noted on several of our walking tours, she was using the tour to increase her own knowledge. The activities were unique and would be very difficult to create on our own. This includes making strudel, a day in Hallstatt, visits to the monastery, the family brewery and Sisi's summer home.

What a time we all had. Jim asked us to pick a moment we loved best on the tour,but I could not pick a moment because every minute was awesome, even the rain in Munich was bearable because our guides took special care to keep us under cover and dry. Joe and Jim were a hoot and without a doubt the bestess two men to lead our pack, they were attentive, considerate and kind, patient even though our group was spot on time and punctual! I did not hear one word of negativity on the trip.

This was my third RS tour and the best so far. Not in terms of what we saw (which was great) but the group and guides were amazing. Im glad I went but other cities countries are more at the top of my list to "revisit". I came away with a more clear understanding of the damages of WWII that I did not appreciate before from what little history I had in high school and college.

My 6th Rick Steves Tour! Had a fantastic time exploring Austria and Germany. The group of 29 on the tour were all great and made for a fun week together. We bonded quickly and made memories. The two tour Guides were very good as well.

This was my first RS tour since the pandemic. It was a really great time. We got to know our group which included a few families, retirees, recent high school graduates and some still in the working force. Our guides, Carlos and Katja were exceptional; knowledgeable, kind, humorous and supportive. We appreciated their expertise in retelling historical facts. Great hotels, a really fun “getting to know your Buddy night” at the dinner in Hallstatt, extra treats and incredible photo ops.

"Favorite “wow” was our stay in Hallstatt. We were caught in the rain (downpour). Our first opportunity to wear our rain coats which we had dragged (grumbling) around in the heat. So happy we had them. We stayed out, taking phenomenal pictures, hiking up to the waterfall, and not caring about “bad” hair days (LOL). Since we had free time, checked out a few shops and bought a few mementos to take home. After the tour group dinner, went out in the dark taking incredible pics (some of the best)"

This was our first tour and we weren't sure group travelling would be for us, but the combination of group time and free time was perfect. We made good friends and learned so much and saw much more of the cities we travelled to in Germany and Austria than we would have on our own. Our hotels were always in the best locations. I highly recommend the tour. We are already planning another Rick Steves' tour to another part of Europe in 2025 - with a couple we met on the Munich/Salzburg/Vienna tour!

Incredible. Jim and Michael were wealths of knowledge. They did all sort of little extra things...schnapps, chocolates, Basilica, ornaments--they shared something personal with each stop. They were experts at herding "cats"; and facilitated multi-generational guests. The food that was provided on trip was exceptional.

My overall tour experience was great! Our guide Andrea was very organized and always helpful. I especially enjoyed her talks on local culture, politics, etiquette etc. on the bus. It made our downtime more meaningful and educational and I learned a lot. The tour was fast-paced with only eight days, but breaks were perfectly timed - including lots of bathroom breaks! Stopping at borders, fancy truck stops and more was quite fun for me and gave me a glimpse into everyday life.

"Hard to choose - there was a moment in Salzburg walking in the shopping district and looked up and saw a glimpse of the castle on c liff down the narrow street and thought to myself "this view only exists in one place in the world, how lucky I am to be able to travel and to have these experiences." My mobility is now marginal, but Jana was very positive and supportive, pointing out places for me to seat when the tour stopped walking. Even so, labored mobility does detract from the tour experience. My free ride concerning PT is over. I must become stronger before taking another RS tour. I hope to do so.

"There were two. The 3rd man museum is and will remain a valuable archive. The Germans are commendable regarding their sense of shame for WWII and genocide. The Austrians - not so much. The Kunsthistoriches Museum was awesome for both its construction and the art. Clearly, the end of empires was overdue. Hopefully, we will address income equality and its attendant bitterness for the lumpen proletariat and avoid a similar path to horrendous evil. "

Overall, the tour was outstanding. I found the free time afternoons hard because I was traveling alone and felt uncertain of finding my way around by myself. I expected to join with others on the tour for these afternoons, but this time members of the tour group tended to stick with family only. Next time, I would go with a friend so I would not be the “ odd man out” trying to navigate in new and unknown cities by myself. I would have preferred a programmed afternoon schedule.

"Several wow moments were centered on the breathtaking vistas overlooking Salzburg. My wife, Wendy, and I had dinner at the Hohensalzburg Fortress before attending the Mozart concert. We also took time to view the city below from the front of the fortress before our funicular ride back down. (which had a mini, not so much wow, more like minor terror, when it stopped halfway down for a few minutes.) "

I loved that there were opportunities for us that you wouldn’t think of finding yourself such as Apple strudel making. I don’t think we would have stayed in Hallstatt and that was absolutely stunning. The pace was good. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and relatable. Our group was friendly. The local guides were great. There was enough free time to explore other sights.

Our tour guide, Mark, had so much great information to share with us, led us very well, showing us so many wonderful places to go, see, and do. The tour was very well planned, even with “free time” to explore on our own. There were lots of great memories from a once in a lifetime tour.

The experience was fabulous despite the fact that it was rainy 5 out of the 7 days. I loved the neighborhood tours to acquaint us with each new city. The city tour guides were instructive and super interesting.

Overall a very pleasant time- revisiting München, Salzburg and for the first time Vienna. Jim and Colette provided first hand knowledge of life in Germany, tips for down/free time, and lots of historical perspective. Sunnier and warmer weather would have increased the enjoyment quotient. Group dynamics were fun, there was a nice blend of guided activities and free time, and the accommodations were top-notch.

"The beautiful view from the Steinterrasse on a lovely day in Salzburg- the river, the fortress and alps in the background! A serendipitous event in St. Michaels' church in Vienna-a violinist practicing for a performance. The acoustics were outstanding and the sound was like angels singing in this baroque romanesque building. The organ accompaniment only embellished the soothing chords. Thirdly, meeting someone who lived in the same small hometown decades ago, indicates how connected we are. "

We were made aware of several performances going on during our visit but that the one we wanted to attend was sold out. Our tour of Munich, Salzburg and Vienna was everything we could have asked for and more. We loved every minute of it. Our tour guides Barbara and Michael were amazing each in their own way. The people we tour with were wonderful. The hotels and restaurants all had such character and charm, it felt exactly like I was one a Rick Steve show, never a crowded spot or long lines. This was our first RS tour, but if will not be our last!

"Our tour guide Michael shared all the many musical opportunities available in Salzburg and Vienna. I am a former Band Director really wanted to see the Vienna Philharmonic. (It was sold out) Michael went above and beyond by going to the concert hall on the day of the event and getting us last minute tickets. It was an amazing concert and a dream come true thanks to Michaels hard work!"

I like the way the tour is designed, mornings with the group and free afternoons. The city walks really did set you up to be able to tour on your own. At first I thought it was strange that some of the bigger attractions weren’t toured as a group. However, I soon learned that they needed to be at your own speed. Very wise of Rick.

"Our Munich guide Michael, a schoolteacher, had his notebook with pictures from 1923 coup attempt. We were standing in that same position where the Munich police faced the Social Nationalists. Another moment was in the summer palace of Franz Joseph standing in his office looking at the desk here he signed the declaration of war starting WW1. Another was the full moon rising above the mountains and reflecting on the lake at Hallstatt. "

Outstanding, knowledgeable guide Iris Andre provided a wonderful learning experience and gave us those special, Rick Steves extras that make all the difference. Griff was superb in Munich, as was Sabrina in Salzburg (along with Johann's apple strudle cooking class and Ailina's opera singing), and Gerhart's Third Man Museum and Vienna tour provided excellent insight to the city and Austria.

Good, solid experience. Jim is a wonderful guide, perhaps a bit “young” (like a 2nd or 3rd year teacher, still relying on his notes, etc.); however, Jim’s potential is great. Just keep up the nice effort! (Too, it probably didn’t help to be surrounded by mostly older, middle-aged travelers who have a lot of experience. 😉)

Several things we could not (Trumer Pils, dairy farm) or would not (Oktoberfest grounds, Third Man Museum, Edelweiss Cooking School) have done on our own. Loved the hotels and breakfasts - especially Hotel Gruner Baum in Halstatt.

"Lake Hallstatt is beautiful! We visited the salt mine. It's mind blowing that salt-mining has occurred there for 7,000 years. ALSO - In addition to the churches that were part of the tour, we visited many on our own. I was amazed at the great variety - floor plans, decoration, etc. The Catholic church in Hallstatt was the first double nave church I have visited (and churches are something I seek out everywhere I travel in Europe)."
