Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Bavaria

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Munich for a "Welcome to Bavaria" meeting. After an orientation walk through our neighborhood, we'll get introduced to Munich's pedestrian-friendly historic core. This evening we'll enjoy a hearty dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 2: Marvelous Munich

This morning we'll join a local guide for a fascinating walk through Munich's Old Town, weaving together the history and traditions of Munich and Bavaria. We'll visit the legendary Hofbräuhaus beer hall and explore the centuries-old Viktualienmarkt, famous for traditional crafts and gourmet food stalls — your guide can point out some local specialties along the way. The rest of the day is yours to explore the English Garden, take in a museum, or — on winter tours — simply savor the surrounding gemütlichkeit (comfy-coziness) of Munich's Christmas markets. Tonight, you'll be free to perfect your prost with new friends at one of Munich's historic beerhalls, where you can hoist a liter-sized mug of beer and a pretzel as big as your head.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 3: Scenic Drive into Austria

Get your cameras ready! This morning we'll drive through the picturesque villages and lush rolling hills of Bavaria as we head into Austria. On our way to Salzburg, we'll visit an award-winning brewery crafting the country's favorite drink for more than 400 years. Afterwards, we'll have lunch together before continuing to charming Salzburg, the city of splendid gardens, Baroque churches, and one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses. We'll settle into our quaint hotel before taking a neighborhood orientation walk and sharing dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 4: Splendid Salzburg

Salzburg is the perfect town for a walking tour, and together with our local expert, that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs that line Getreidegasse and through picturesque gardens, and going for Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral. We'll then get a lesson on two Austrian staples: We'll learn how to make the amazing, appley treat Apfelstrudel and appreciate the fine art of drinking schnapps. The rest of your day is free for hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or (on winter tours) wandering through the Christmas markets. Your free evening is perfect for a concert featuring the work of Salzburg's favorite son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 5: Habsburgs and the Wachau Valley

This morning we'll make our way to the mountain retreat of Kaiservilla, where Emperor Franz Josef signed the declaration that kicked off World War I. After learning about the Habsburgs and their once expansive empire, we'll head towards Austria's prettiest stretch of the Danube River, the Wachau Valley, dotted with cute villages and lush hillsides blanketed in vineyards. We'll taste some of the region's fine wines, then set you free to commune with nature before regrouping for dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3.5 hours. Sleep in the Wachau Valley.

Day 6: Melk Abbey, the Danube and Vienna

Today we'll tour the artistic treasures and Baroque wonders of the Benedictine abbey at Melk. Then we'll take a boat cruise down the Danube River and check if it really is blue. We'll finish our day in the one-time capital of a powerful empire — and our tour's grand finale: extravagant, opulent Vienna. After checking into our hotel we'll take a walk, orienting you to historic Vienna and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 7: Historic Vienna

We'll begin our day by joining a local guide for a walking tour that takes us to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Our walking tour continues with a visit to the Kunsthistoriches Museum to marvel at the massive art collection that once belonged to the Habsburgs. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus, or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

In the past we've taken tours that were fast paced and very regimented, we wanted to get away from that. Our tour was the perfect balance of guided touring and free time experience. George was the perfect guide, informative but not overbearing . He give us great advice about local culture and attractions. Another thing I liked was that when we were on the tour bus it was not crowded at all and we could spread out.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "wow"moment would have to be Lake Hallstatt. Talk about picture post card views from every angle. From the boat ride around the lake to the ride up on the vernacular to the viewing platform it was one of the most scenic places I've been."

Our guide Michael was absolutely outstanding: knowledgeable, friendly, quick to assist with any questions or problems and highly skilled at shepherding 28 adults. The orientation we received by our guide at the start of each stay as to the location of a safe ATM, a grocery store and pharmacy was very helpful. Overall very good. The laundry options were less than convenient - closed early during the week; Vienna hotel could not assist w/Friday afternoon arrival - their next pick ups were not avail until Monday; 'just around the corner' was NOT just around the corner; and one of the Salzburg hotels that offer reasonably priced 'service' only do so for the 1st 4-5 people, all others out of luck. We were warned about the attitude in Vienna - but WOW, not impressed with Kaiserhof staff - RUDE.

"Being a musician, my "wow" moment came several times during masses I attended. (FYI: I'm not Catholic). Until that time, most classical music was, for me, on the same plane. I studied it, learned it, practiced it, taught it, and enjoyed it. That changed when I heard classical sacred music performed in the rooms and spaces where it was intended to be played and sung. The music came from the choir loft above and behind the service, and it truly sounded like music coming from heaven!"

After a rocky start with flight re-routes due to weather and lost luggage (you're so right, Rick, NEVER check a bag!), my son and I decided to make it part of our adventure to shop like locals for clothing and toiletries. She truly cared about giving us a fabulous vacation. There was a good balance of time together & time alone. Meals were delicious and very large. Enjoyed each location. For tourists from warmer regions, RS should give greater detail of how COLD the region can be & that they don't do anything about snow or ice.

"Too many to list. each walking tour/experience was excellent. Michael gave an excellent overview of Munich's history, setting the stage for next stops. Each stop built on previous expanding our learning of the Empire and the HRE. Sabine, then Gerhart were also excellent. The 3rd man museum should be rebranded to be 'post war Vienna museum' - excellent. Strudel making exceeded expectations. Really enjoyed the castles, audience with the Countess, and our shy guide Max at the other castle. "

This was our first time with a tour group and it was an awesome experience. Barbara Schifosky was an amazing and personable guide/guru. From practicalities to personalized experiences she was the best. We saw things and met people that we would not be able to see on our own. Because this was a one-week tour in November weather, planning and coordination were key. Our tour guide, George, accomplished this perfectly, with just the right balance of group activities and free time to keep us busy but not overwhelmed. Anja was a delightful host, knowing when to give people a break and when to present information. I also noted on several of our walking tours, she was using the tour to increase her own knowledge. The activities were unique and would be very difficult to create on our own. This includes making strudel, a day in Hallstatt, visits to the monastery, the family brewery and Sisi's summer home.

This was my third RS tour and the best so far. Not in terms of what we saw (which was great) but the group and guides were amazing. Im glad I went but other cities countries are more at the top of my list to "revisit". I came away with a more clear understanding of the damages of WWII that I did not appreciate before from what little history I had in high school and college.

What a time we all had. Jim asked us to pick a moment we loved best on the tour, but I could not pick a moment because every minute was awesome, even the rain in Munich was bearable because our guides took special care to keep us under cover and dry. Joe and Jim were a hoot and without a doubt the bestess two men to lead our pack, they were attentive, considerate and kind, patient even though our group was spot on time and punctual! I did not hear one word of negativity on the trip.

"Hallstatt was the highlight for me, did J&J order the fabulous band that was playing outside our hotel balcony that evening??? I wondered LOL. I can’t say a negative thing about all the magical places we visited but ONE thing I can say is that if it were not for J&J leading us along the way we would not have experienced a fraction of Europe’s beauty and history. Rick Steves is a must, and I can’t wait to plan another knowing ahead of time that the trip will be smooth and organized. "

This was my first RS tour since the pandemic. It was a really great time. We got to know our group which included a few families, retirees, recent high school graduates and some still in the working force. Our guides, Carlos and Katja were exceptional; knowledgeable, kind, humorous and supportive. We appreciated their expertise in retelling historical facts. Great hotels, a really fun “getting to know your Buddy night” at the dinner in Hallstatt, extra treats and incredible photo ops.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Favorite “wow” was our stay in Hallstatt. We were caught in the rain (downpour). Our first opportunity to wear our rain coats which we had dragged (grumbling) around in the heat. So happy we had them. We stayed out, taking phenomenal pictures, hiking up to the waterfall, and not caring about “bad” hair days (LOL). Since we had free time, checked out a few shops and bought a few mementos to take home. After the tour group dinner, went out in the dark taking incredible pics (some of the best)"

My overall tour experience was great! Our guide Andrea was very organized and always helpful. I especially enjoyed her talks on local culture, politics, etiquette etc. on the bus. It made our downtime more meaningful and educational and I learned a lot. The tour was fast-paced with only eight days, but breaks were perfectly timed - including lots of bathroom breaks! Stopping at borders, fancy truck stops and more was quite fun for me and gave me a glimpse into everyday life.

Overall, the tour was outstanding. I found the free time afternoons hard because I was traveling alone and felt uncertain of finding my way around by myself. I expected to join with others on the tour for these afternoons, but this time members of the tour group tended to stick with family only. Next time, I would go with a friend so I would not be the “ odd man out” trying to navigate in new and unknown cities by myself. I would have preferred a programmed afternoon schedule.

Overall a very pleasant time- revisiting München, Salzburg and for the first time Vienna. Jim and Colette provided first hand knowledge of life in Germany, tips for down/free time, and lots of historical perspective. Sunnier and warmer weather would have increased the enjoyment quotient. Group dynamics were fun, there was a nice blend of guided activities and free time, and the accommodations were top-notch.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The beautiful view from the Steinterrasse on a lovely day in Salzburg- the river, the fortress and alps in the background! A serendipitous event in St. Michaels' church in Vienna-a violinist practicing for a performance. The acoustics were outstanding and the sound was like angels singing in this baroque romanesque building. The organ accompaniment only embellished the soothing chords. Thirdly, meeting someone who lived in the same small hometown decades ago, indicates how connected we are. "

Our tour of Munich, Salzburg and Vienna was everything we could have asked for and more. We loved every minute of it. Our tour guides Barbara and Michael were amazing each in their own way. The people we tour with were wonderful. The hotels and restaurants all had such character and charm, it felt exactly like I was one a Rick Steve show, never a crowded spot or long lines. This was our first RS tour, but if will not be our last!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our tour guide Michael shared all the many musical opportunities available in Salzburg and Vienna. I am a former Band Director really wanted to see the Vienna Philharmonic. (It was sold out) Michael went above and beyond by going to the concert hall on the day of the event and getting us last minute tickets. It was an amazing concert and a dream come true thanks to Michaels hard work!"

I like the way the tour is designed, mornings with the group and free afternoons. The city walks really did set you up to be able to tour on your own. At first I thought it was strange that some of the bigger attractions weren’t toured as a group. However, I soon learned that they needed to be at your own speed. Very wise of Rick.

"Our Munich guide Michael, a schoolteacher, had his notebook with pictures from 1923 coup attempt. We were standing in that same position where the Munich police faced the Social Nationalists. Another moment was in the summer palace of Franz Joseph standing in his office looking at the desk here he signed the declaration of war starting WW1. Another was the full moon rising above the mountains and reflecting on the lake at Hallstatt. "

Outstanding, knowledgeable guide Iris Andre provided a wonderful learning experience and gave us those special, Rick Steves extras that make all the difference. Good, solid experience. Jim is a wonderful guide, perhaps a bit “young” (like a 2nd or 3rd year teacher, still relying on his notes, etc.); however, Jim’s potential is great. Nice balance of planned and free time. Excellent variety of experiences. Several things we could not (Trumer Pils, dairy farm) or would not (Oktoberfest grounds, Third Man Museum, Edelweiss Cooking School) have done on our own. Loved the hotels and breakfasts - especially Hotel Gruner Baum in Halstatt.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Lake Hallstatt is beautiful! We visited the salt mine. It's mind blowing that salt-mining has occurred there for 7,000 years. ALSO - In addition to the churches that were part of the tour, we visited many on our own. I was amazed at the great variety - floor plans, decoration, etc. The Catholic church in Hallstatt was the first double nave church I have visited (and churches are something I seek out everywhere I travel in Europe)."

The tour was only a week long. That turned out to be helpful since we made it through the whole tour without getting sick with Covid. In the few days after the tour ended and we were on our own, we did come down with Covid. We have been on 7 RS Tours, but until the whole Covid situation is really under control, we should not book another trip. Part of the problem is dealing with the airlines canceling flights, which has lengthened the layovers to 7 or eight hours.

It is always amazing to me that a group of strangers can get along so well which makes the tour so meaningful as you share your experience of what you’ve just seen. Our guide was wonderful and I so appreciated the historical background provided as we traveled. Each local guide provided that personal touch of their hometown that helped my education. The farm tour, cooking school with entertainment and the brewery tour were items that added that special touch. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"In Salzburg at the Edelweiss Cooking school, the chef’s sister sang for us. It was such a great experience to see a young opera student. Her talent brought tears to my eyes. I can still hear her voice when I think about that day. I’m also so astonished at the gorgeous monstrous buildings built so long ago. The history of the war and its devastation is something to ponder during these tumultuous times. I would not want history to repeat this tragedy."

"The boat ride when we arrived in Hallstatt was outstanding. First, this gives you the opportunity to get fantastic pictures. Thus, you can enjoy the rest of the day knowing that you've already got great picture. Second, instead of waiting in a hotel lobby for your room to be ready, you relax on a boat with a beer. This kind of planning is not something one could easily do on their own. "

The overall tour experience was wonderful, in terms of the hotels, food and people I was travelling with. It was my first time being to Austria and Germany and I felt both places exceptional with the local tour guides at the location being knowledgeable and passionate about their cities. I do also like that there was a planned rest time, as we saw so much in a week it was nice to settle down in Hallstat for a day/night. The hotels were wonderful and situated in the perfect spots!

The Tour was great over all. Iris our tour guide was wonderful and full of tips as well Darija (guide in training). The places we travelled to and experienced were interesting and fun. When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and December is a good time to take a Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna tour. However, the months of May, June, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Summer, while the most crowded, has the best weather. Winter is cold but there are no crowds, and the Christmas markets and concert season are in full swing.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Munich (MUC) and out of Vienna (VIE) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves guidebook.
