Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Bavaria

We'll meet at 3 p.m. at our hotel in Munich for a "Welcome to Bavaria" meeting. After an orientation walk through our neighborhood, we'll get introduced to Munich's efficient public transportation system. This evening we'll enjoy a hearty dinner together. Sleep in Munich (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Marvelous Munich

This morning we'll join a local guide for a fascinating walk through Munich's Old Town, weaving together the history and traditions of Munich and Bavaria. We'll visit the legendary Hofbräuhaus beerhall and explore the centuries-old Viktualienmarkt, famous for traditional crafts and gourmet food stalls — of course we'll taste some specialties along the way. The rest of the day is yours to explore the English Garden, take in a museum, or — on winter tours — simply savor the surrounding Gemütlichkeit (comfy-coziness) of Munich's Christmas markets. Tonight, you'll be free to perfect your prost with new friends at one of Munich's historic beerhalls, where you can hoist a liter-sized mug of beer, and a pretzel as big as your head. No Bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Fairy-tale Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

Get your cameras ready! This morning we'll drive through the picturesque villages and lush rolling hills of Bavaria. When we arrive at the foothills of the Alps, we'll hike uphill to tour "Mad" King Ludwig's fantasy that inspired Disney: Neuschwanstein Castle. Afterwards, we'll share a picnic lunch together and visit Germany's greatest Rococo-style church, the Wieskirche. Then, we're off to Austria and charming Salzburg, the city of splendid gardens, Baroque churches, and one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses. We'll settle into our quaint hotel and share dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: Splendid Salzburg

Salzburg is the perfect town for a walking tour, and together with our local expert, that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs that line Getreidegasse, through picturesque gardens and going for Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral. We'll then drop into a cooking school, for a lesson on how to make the amazing, appley Austrian treat Apfelstrudel. The rest of your day is free for hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or (on winter tours) wandering through the Christmas markets. Your free evening is perfect for a concert featuring the work of Salzburg's favorite son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Lovely Lakes and Hallstatt

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. On our way, we'll skip like stones across the pristine waters of Austria's Salzkammergut lakes district on a boat cruise enjoying the breathtaking lakeside villages and craggy mountain vistas. This afternoon we'll settle into our cozy lakeside lodging, where you'll be free to commune with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines. This evening we'll gather together to learn about the history and culture of Schnapps, with tastings of course. Zum wohl! Tonight we'll share dinner together. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt (1 night). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 6: Melk Abbey, the Danube and Vienna

Today we'll take another scenic drive to the Danube Valley, where we'll tour the artistic treasures and Baroque wonders of the Benedictine abbey at Melk. Then we'll cruise Austria's prettiest stretch of the Danube River and check if it really is blue (season permitting). We'll finish our day in the one-time capital of a powerful empire — and our tour's grand finale — extravagant, opulent Vienna. After checking into our hotel we'll take a walk, orienting you to historic Vienna, including St. Stephen's Cathedral. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy dinner on your own. Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Historic and Royal Vienna

This morning we'll be introduced (figuratively, curtsies not required) to the family who created one of Europe's most dynamic empires: the Habsburgs. We'll join our local guide for a walking tour that takes us into their residence: the Hofburg Palace, including their Imperial Apartments and Treasury. Our tour will continue with a behind-the-scenes peek inside Vienna's famous opera house (when available). Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus, or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna in 8 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Handle steep walks and long castle stair climbs at Neuschwanstein and other locations.

We enjoyed traveling with a knowledgeable and friendly tour director, Maisie, and a group of fun, punctual people as we explored the well-chosen venues. The itinerary was educational, amazing and well paced. Expert local guides – Patrick in Munich, Sabina in Salzburg, and Gerhard in Vienna- made it possible to see and learn so much. The centrally located hotels enabled us to explore on our own after the group tour activities were done, even after we indulged in a bit of local beers and wines!

This was an excellent tour overall, with a great group of people from all over the country, a memorable tour guide, engaging local guides, well-chosen hotels (with roomy rooms for solo travelers), and an unbeatable itinerary that included cities and locales I have never visited before. The tour left me wanting to return for more, with a better grasp of the German language, which is a good thing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Simply being in Munich was special because I recently learned through that my great-great grandfather on my mother's side of the family was born in "Bayern, Germany" in 1829, as was my great-great grandmother. Reconnecting with this past was a good thing. Also, while there were many stunning scenes of art, architecture, and nature, I was deeply impressed by the Third Man museum in Vienna, which documented how the United States contributed to the rebuilding of Europe after WW2."

Overall we had a great time. Maisie along with the local guides were, in my opinion the most valuable part of the trip. We also had a great group of people, everyone got along and we were all punctual!! I especially enjoyed the "little surprises" such as the boat cruise on Lake Hallstat and especially the river cruise. I was a little disappointed in the Ludwig castle, took a lot of time and we have seen other Ludwig castles that are much more impressive.

"Not sure if I had a singular "wow" moment. Really enjoyed the 3rd man museum and at the end of the Vienna tour it was interesting to see how all the history was intertwined. Almost an AhAh moment."

My wife and I made three trips to Europe prior to this tour, doing all of our own planning. We decided to try a Rick Steves tour after quite a bit of research on possible regions to visit. The tour was exactly as described - the small group, interesting hotels, plenty of walking and a mix of scheduled time and free time. I was very impressed with the way our guide Holger kept us organized and amused at the same time. When plans had to change unexpectedly, he adapted quickly. Great time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My WOW moment was the group dynamics Holger worked so hard on. I had never vacationed with a group and wondered what would happen as we moved along in our travels. The buddy system immediately got each of us involved with a stranger. Then the group meals and bus rides allowed us to get to know each other as much or as little as we pleased. All of the sites we visited were interesting in their own ways. I especially enjoyed the Third Man Museum history of WWII and Austria's involvement."

This was our first Rick Steves tour, and we had an outstanding time. The mix of tour time and personal time was perfect allowing us to experience sites on our own. Our guide Holger lent a great depth of knowledge and experience, besides being flexible. He was always willing to help with recommendations. There was also great camaraderie among the tour members which led to wonderful interaction with others. The choice of hotels in great locations as well as the local restaurants were perfect.

"I would say I have two. The first would be the boat ride on our arrival to the town of Hallstatt, simply breathtaking on a spectacular day. The second would be walking into Marienplatz in Munich as all the church bells were ringing. It just simply took my breath away!!"

This was our first trip to Europe and our first Rick Steves tour. Overall, even with the huge learning curve of novice travelers, it was a great experience. I felt safe on the tour and I believe I was able to truly experience the beauty and history of Germany and Austria.

Favorite "WOW" moment

We felt this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Europe and all the reviews said if this is your first time, go with Rick Steves. We were not disappointed. Mix of walking tours, local guides, info passed around the bus, cooking class, museums 4. Food and snack samples by Holger 5. Buddy connections 6. Attention to individual interests, health issues, etc. 7. Free time 8. Freedom to opt in or out of activities without judgment 9. I needed more WC stops than were scheduled 10. Thankful our bus had a facility which I had to use one time

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seriously, Holger. I would go anywhere he goes on any trip! 1. 3rd Man Museum and meeting the Gerhardt who had a passion for it. A huge treat! 2. Spend 2 nights in each hotel ( Hallstatt 1 night was enough) 3. Personality of our guide and his accessibility and encouragement to meet and talk with local people and to discuss anything! Overall the tour was fantastic. Very well organized and thought out. Even though the tour wasn't very long, only 7 days, at times I felt a little rushed. I would have liked one free day, preferably in Hallstatt, to just rest and enjoy the scenery. Our Vagabond Ireland tour did this. One day just to linger and relax would have been great. Hallstatt was absolutely spectacular and it would have been an ideal resting spot for the group. Too many group dinners.

The tour had a lot of events packed into 6.5 days. Yet, I didn't feel rushed and thought we had time to absorb what we saw[INVALID]both with the group and on our own (I was with my wife). One thing different (for me) from the two other Rick Steves tours we've done was what I'd call the perks of where we travelled. So, we had the opportunity to be on the water, not once but twice, and do a hands on cooking class. Overall impression[INVALID]excellent tour that should be one day longer (see below)

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The opportunity to do two water excursions and do a hands on cooking class (and yes, I know that's two 'wow' moments). Btw, the expression "wow" moment was also used by our guide in Salzburg (Sabina or Sabine?--she was great)"

The tour overall was very good. This is my second Rick Steve's tour and it did not disappoint. The only thing I would say is it felt like a lot more time on the bus then the previous tour I did. I think in the future I will look at tours that have minimum 2-3 nights in each city. Overall we had great time!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hiking up the fortress in Salzburg. If I am 100% honest my most memorable experience was prior to the tour starting. We arrived 2 days prior to and went to Dachau memorial. The guided tour there was so well done and a very powerful experience. It is something that will stay with me forever."

Local guides were excellent. Too many group Dinners. Would have liked to have spent 2 nights in Hallstatt. In my limited opinion, I think having 28 people in our group is too many. Another tour (not Rick Steves) that my Wife and I really liked was limited to 16 people in a motor coach that was designed for 16 people. We were much more maneuverable compared to a 50-60 passenger motor coach.

The tour was expertly planned and seamless in execution. A good mix of planned events and free time to let us explore. Great balance between the cities and countryside / lake district. Even though this tour is on the shorter side compared to most Rick Steves tours, I felt the length was perfect (we added on a day at both ends). Not a big deal, but I could have done with a few less church visits in exchange for something active or more "backdoor."

It would be hard to replicate the wonderful, authentic experience of this tour on my own. Having the resources of the Rick Steves organization to plan activities was extremely valuable. The knowledge and experience of our guide, Hans, added a depth and a comfort level that would be impossible to duplicate on my own. The activity level was just right-not too strenuous. After 8 days, I was wishing we could go back and start the whole trip over again. I would definitely recommend this tour.

We had a wonderful first tour experience! We went to Germany a week in advance and rented a car and saw parts of Germany that were not part of this tour. Group was large -28 people making it difficult in some locations. Overall it was enjoyable and we experienced things we never would have otherwise due to knowledge of guide or transportation. Nice combination of transportation options such as taking the boat on the Danube river to reduce bus time. I have not had a guided tour before and will not ever go without one again thanks to Rick Steves and his "one of a kind" tour guide, Rolinka. I can't thank Rolinka enough for the wealth of information she shared with us! She was so educated and versed on every aspect of our tour. It was a pleasure to travel with her and your company. Thank you for the memories!

This was my first trip to Europe and I think the decision to use Rick Steves' Tours was perfect. While there was structure, there was also lots of free time to explore on your own. I was able to challenge myself to try different foods, different languages, experience different cultures and broaden my love of history. I also learned how to be a more savvy traveler and to not be intimidated by visiting another country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"On the advice of our tour guide, Rolinka, my wife and I along with our new friends, Denise and Esta passed on touring the salt mines in Hallstatt and instead took a hike to a falls outside of town. The natural beauty of the area was absolutely stunning! We were wanting to get some good exercise but we had to stop frequently just to look around and admire the scenery. I have never seen anyplace more beautiful than Hallstatt. It was the highlight of a tour chock full of highlights!"

My overall tour experience was fantastic! I loved all three cities (M/S/V) and Hallstatt was absolutely incredible. Our tour guide Rolinka was the very best-great at keeping 28 adults on task, knowledgeable and fun! My favorite city was Salzburg - it was beautiful and the right size but Munich was a close second. Our day in Hallstatt was magical to the perfect daytime weather and lovely village. The balance between tour and personal time was just right. Very happy with our experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite experiences were: Mozart dinner in Salzburg, dinner together in Hallstatt and our last dinner in the wine garden in Vienna. Our Mozart dinner was elegant, the three 20 min operas beautiful. In Hallstatt, we had an Aperol cocktail party before dinner, Rolinka showed how to filet the fresh lake trout and we had the dining room to ourselves. The wine garden dinner was amazing-eating outdoors on a beautiful late summer evening, the wine, food and zither player were unforgettable."

My wife had great tour. This was our 1st Rick Steve's tour. It was very well organized. Our tour guide was a lot of fun and easy to get to know. It was nice to break up the days with free time and organized tours. We enjoyed the other members of our group. We tried to mingle with different couples at dinner time. We got to know some folks better than others and I think we all got along very well.

"I think Lake Hallstatt was the physical highlight. I have spent my career as a ferry captain on Lake Champlain I would go back to Lake Hallstatt in a heart beat just to watch the activity. As is the norm travelling these days the crowds can be overwhelming if you let them bother you. I spent my career in the tourist service business. So I'm just seeing it from the other side. The crowds at Neuschwanstein Castle was probable the biggest eye-opener. Hard to imagine being there in high season."

The Munich, Salzburg, Vienna tour exceeded my expectations in so many ways. I was already a Rick Steve's consumer having used his books since 1987. Starting with the Europe 101, I have traveled to all of the EU using recommendations from the series. I knew I liked his style. The difference in having Rolinka as a guide on this tour was just an incredible enhancement of the experience. She was a fountain of knowledge, calm, and fun, which added so much to the enjoyment of each destination.

This was my first tour and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I was worried that I'd feel "trapped" with a big group of people and that the tour experience would detract from the relaxation of a vacation. I found the Rick Steves experience to be just what my sister and I needed for a fun and immersive trip. I loved how we started each morning learning about the places together, then had free time to explore in the afternoons. It was a great balance of supportive guidance and freedom.

"Lake Hallstatt was the most beautiful place I've ever been. I really wish we'd had more time there, one night was not enough and I would have gladly eliminated the next day's excursion to spend more time. We hiked to a waterfall in the woods and it was so gorgeous and relaxing, just what we needed mid-trip. We were warned that the town would be filled with tourists, but I didn't find it more packed than the cities that we visited. That place was heaven on earth and I'd love to go back."

This tour was exceptional because of the quality of the guides: Daniela in particular. The guides, overall, were knowledgeable and accessible. Daniela has a genuineness and openness that made it possible to learn, not only about the history and art of the region, but also about the character and values of the people / regions we passed through. She had the ability to pull together the disparate threads into a cohesive whole. Her sense of humor was greatly appreciated.

My wife & I enjoyed our first trip to Bavaria and our first Rick Steves guided tour, though we had done another My Way tour last year. Our tour guide Daniela was born & raised near Munich, so she was a great resource for us and added a lot to the experience. Besides sharing her local perspective with us, she also planned several special surprises for all of us. My favorite of these was a side visit while up in the Alps to enjoy a trip down a luge run, definitely an amazing experience for us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to choose as there were so many: The beauty of Neuschwanstein castle, the fun of making our own strudel, the Danube boat cruise, breathtaking Lake Hallstatt, so many others. This was my 7th Rick Steves tour. Of course, I've enjoyed all of my tours - I keep coming back for more - but this was my favorite! Our guide, Daniela, was fun, energetic, and informative. She joins my list of best-loved guides, including Federico (Barcelona, Madrid) and Tom (London). And we quickly bonded with our group of fellow travelers, who embraced the Rick Steves "no grumps" policy and the Bavarian culture.

"When I took my first bite of a warm apple-filled Krafpfen at Schmalznudel Café Frischhut in Munich. When the server at Zum Dürnbräu delivered an enormous Kaiserschmarnn, a fluffy pancake with raisins, almonds, and apples, to our table. When Daniela surprised us with an exhilarating luge ride after leaving Salszburg. But my absolute favorite "wow" moment was the private boat ride to the Seehotel Grüner Baum in Hallstatt. It was a very good overall tour and the group was diverse, interesting, and fun to travel with the entire time. Donald White is an excellent guide and his vast experience in the business is very apparent. Overall, this tour was well-planned, fun and interesting. I felt like there were no "boring" times and also a good mix of scheduled activity and personal time. Rick's guidebooks described the sights nicely so I knew what to expect. This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We learned a lot about ourselves from the trip; mainly, that we are more of "independent" type travelers, so the trade off of loss of independence versus the planning of all the trip details was a bit grating on us. We learned that flying twelve hours to go to a European destination demands a substantial front end "soft landing" as well as time on the back end to help with jet lag, and the feeling of being rushed. The 8 day tour was jam packed- too much.

Thought that the tour at times was a bit rushed. Often not able to pause and take a snapshot or enjoy site for a few minutes. For example at Melk Abbey, after finishing lunch, had only five or ten minutes to enjoy Abbey itself. Felt pressure to meet deadlines even though everyone was on time. Realize that tour was only 8 days and covered a lot of ground, but would have preferred a slower pace and maybe omitting a few things.

While I realize that planning what will fit in an eight day trip is challenging as you [INVALID] specific sites and cities to be included, I did feel that our group was wisked along a little too rapidly and didn't spend enough minutes at some sites to absorb and appreciate them. I have taken several other tours (but not with Rick Steves) that were 14-18 days in length and didn't feel rushed. However, if we hadn't traveled at the pace we did, we wouldn't have experienced as much.

Though I was hesitant to sign up for a tour that involved traveling between cities as compared to staying in one city for the week, I actually found this experience to be a great learning experience with fun and enjoyment at every turn. The cities that we visited were fascinating, our tour guide, Rolinka, was superb and the other members of the tour were fun to share the experience with. It was a mountain top experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Attending the Edelweiss cooking school and listening to the young woman who sang opera songs as well as "Edelweiss" from the Sound of Music. There wasn't a dry eye in the group. Small wonderful moments such as when the bus pulled off of the road between Salzburg and Hallstadt so we could look at a dazzling vista of lake, mountains and steeples. And not to be forgotten was the visit to the "Third Man Museum." What a learning experience. I rented and viewed the movie upon my return."

For our first time out of the States, it was great to have all the details arranged and handled for us. So nice to just sit back and enjoy the sights without having to worry about any arrangements! The small group size is great, and tour guides are very helpful. If there were any gliches, we never knew it because Rolinka kept everything going so smoothly. As my husband said, she was like a swan on a lake - looking very calm on the surface but paddling like crazy under the water.

"So hard to pick one moment - most everything wowed me. It might have been the impromptu opera aria sung by the chef's helper at the strudel making session. She had many of us in tears."

This was our second RS Tour and our first with our 18 and 20 year old children. I was excited to see that there were 4 families traveling with similar young adults. Rolinka, our Guide, is very seasoned and delightful - her knowledge and leadership made this trip very special for us all. She made sure to add some extra experiences for us which we all appreciated. Meals were appropriate for each city - as were the hotels - as always very clean and centrally located.

I really enjoyed the tour. It was a great introduction to Munich, Salzburg and Vienna. It was, however, very rushed. But it had to be to cover the sites and atmosphere of these cities in the time allotted. I think I would recommend this tour be bumped up to 10 days. Some of the walking tours were a little repetitive, as well. We walked some areas of the cities with both Rolinka and our local guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I don't know that I had a "wow" moment. Having never been to Europe, it was all amazing to me. Plus, being a student of history - I am a history teacher, soon to be retired - I especially enjoyed the royal residences and palaces. The opulence of the Catholic churches also was fascinating. I found all three cities easy to get around in; the people were friendly; and the food was amazing, and, surprisingly to me, very affordable."

This was a good tour. I loved the city walks and the countryside. The group was great and there were a lot of opportunities for good social connection. I think that the summer was not the best time as many things were not available such as the opera or music in some cafes. The Neuschanstein Castle so limited and more about large group management. It might be too popular now. The views of the castle and walking around it was satisfying once I new what it was really like inside.

I loved this tour. It was as good as the Paris & the heart of France. With one exception - the afternoon in Salzburg. I loved the eidel weiss bakery, the best experience of the trip, but Salzburg itself was AWFUL. It's my least favorite European city I've ever been to, and I've been to around 50 different cities. In Salzburg, there were all of these tours, museums, cathedrals, but they were all mediocre and the people were unfriendly. I'd really recommend limiting the time in Salzburg .

The tour was great! Carlos was an excellent guide. I would say that the level of physical activity is greater than it says in the guide: since so much is at such a high altitude, even easier walks become difficult for someone from lower elevation (like me). Amazing sights and experiences. The only negative thing I would say is that the entire tour felt rushed a bit. Had my daughter and I not come early a few days to Munich and stayed a few days in Vienna after the tour ended, we would have missed so much of what these great cities have to offer. Consideration should be made to expanding the tour, say 10 or 12 days to provide more time to explore, considering the effort made to get to Europe to begin with. The tour didn't disappoint, however.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely the Rococo church, the Wieskirche, in the middle of no where. NOt only was it beautiful, but the peaceful surroundings made it a nice contrast to having spent time in Munich. This trip was our 25th anniversary gift to each other (although it was a few years late). My expectations were surpassed. We experienced more of Europe than we could have alone. I tried to arrange a trip on my own and found it overwhelming so I looked up your tours and found we could be put on the waiting list. In a couple weeks we were notified we could join the group. When we decided to book a trip to Europe and decided that it would be best for us to book a tour, I was worried that meant we'd be spending most of our time viewing Europe from a bus, staying in a different hotel every night, and hustling through each of the sites. The tour was everything we expected and more. We enjoyed the mixture of guided/structured activities and free time. "We followed Rick's advise and took two days to ourselves before and after the guided trip. "1) The signing assistant at the cooking school in Salzburg where we made apple strudel. She shocked us with the aria Queen of the Night from Mozart's Magic Flute! She was superb, gave us chills. 2) The Salt Mine in Halstatt, a Fabulous plan B in place of a boat ride on the Lake. It was exciting, surprising, challenging, and fun! The view of the Lake Hallstatt region was STUNNING! 3) The Third Man Museum, another plan B. Fascinating and provacative. Gerhard was a delight!"

The entire tour was wonderful. We had a great guide in Donald and a group of fellow travelers who were congenial - absolutely no whiners in the bunch. Missed the back stage tour of the Vienna Opera House, due to rehearsal needed for the premiere of a new opera that day, but we had an interesting tour of The Third Man museum instead. Since my sister and I stayed for an extra day, we were able to take opera tour on Sunday on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I enjoyed everything, but I especially enjoyed walking through the small village of Hallstatt. It as beautiful. Also, by good fortune (or Donald's extraordinary leadership) we arrived in Mundsee on Ascension Day and were greeted as we came walked up the main street by a parade and marching band."

Outstanding tour. The format of orientation when arriving in a new city coupled with local tour guides (all of whom were excellent) and then free time to explore on our own really works. Our guide, Donald White, did an outstanding job with both his narratives and approach such as playing music from Sound of Music while we traveled to different sights from the movie. Also, getting all required tickets and avoiding standing in line made the tour that much better.

As usual, never disappointed in a RS tour. This was my 3rd RS tour. The other two being England and Italy. I tell everyone, a Rick Steve's tour is a perfect blend of tour time and free time. The guides are terrific in providing suggestions for free time with great details. The are lovely little, unexpected surprises with the tours also. The guides take such good care of us and do a great job of keeping everyone on track, in a kind way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The unexpected shift in plan, doing the Salt Mine tour at Lake Halstat instead of Lake boat tour. It was great Donald could shift our plan and come up with a great alternative. Truly, there are too many "WOW" moments. Seeing the beautiful landscape of the countryside in Austria, hilltop castles and watching an opera on a huge outdoor screen....the list goes on."

Donnie was great at giving us just the right about of information.

Looking at Neuschwanstein Castle from Mary's Bridge, the view of the Alps and countryside as we drove from each location, the view of Hallstatt and the lake from the salt mines. Also, we got to slide down 2 bannisters in the salt mines at Hallstatt which was an unexpected twist."

"2 "wow" moments: Salzburg - we were at a cooking class making apple strudel. The quiet, sweet young woman who had been assisting the chef with distributing ingredients, stood up at the end of our course and said she would sing for us. Expecting a song from the Sound of Music, she broke out into an aria from Mozart! Hallstat - looking out onto the Lake from our balcony just after sunset, it was a spectacular view - the Lake, the surrounding mountains, and the quiet stillness of the evening."

It was the best experience. The tour was very professionally run and organized. The standards are high. They sourced excellent restaurants and hotels. But, it worked well and it was an excellent group of travellers many of whom who had travelled on Rick's tours multiple times.

As a veteran of four RS tours over the past ten years (and a very seasoned European DIY traveler), I can truly say this particular tour was amongst the very best experience we've ever had. Very good tour with a couple of great additions. Overall the pace was fine, it was well organized, and had some extradinary moments. The skill of the tour guide in shifting/adding things was especially valuable. Touring at Christmas time had some challenges (some rain and often quite cold) but was more than worth it as the cities at night are are lit up and crowded with both locals and tourists.

My second recent trip with Rick Steves and another splendid itinerary. Hotels comfortable and clean and really well located to the core of each place that we visited. This was my first Rick Steves trip so I was not sure what to expect. I was prepared to carry bags and have hotels that were moderate but each hotel was actually better than expected. I expected that we would hit the big city sites as listed, but special things like the brewery tour and touring Melk that were not on our list were a couple of highlights for me. The first activity, the nighttime guided walk, was disappointing because the guide seemed to trivialize the background history. It got better after that, with some stand-out guides.

This was our first Rick Steves tour and I was quite impressed. I liked that we were given lots of free time to explore areas on our own and that we didn't his all the usual American tourist havens. I also liked the lack of pressure to shop or spend lots of money. The hotels were all very good to outstanding (rooms, breakfasts, services). Our tour guide was informative, witty, and made the the experience personally rewarding.

It was lots of fun visiting those cities. I learned a lot about the culture, history and food. Our tour leader Andrea was great and she has so much energy and just fun to hang around. We are also very lucky that overall the weather was quite cooperating. As usual, all of the local guides are very knowledgeable. The hotels are much better than the one I stayed in Rome before. Only one minor negative is that it seems that we have less time to visit each city, probably due to travel arrangement.

This was our first tour and honestly we did not know what to expect. It exceeded all of our expectations. The hotels were beautiful and the trip was broken up into manageable segments that gave us time to rest, sight see on our own and truly enjoy group activities. Our group was very dynamic and friendly which made it easy to "mix it up" by interacting with different people. We loved how every hotel had breakfast as well!

We spend a good deal of time out and about looking at buildings, churches and palaces. These buildings are really the basis of the importance of these major German and Austian cities. Churches were major community and political centers and represent a focus of government finances and energy. The Catholic Church was the first governing body in this area after the fall of Rome. The Churches are also major centers of artistic endeavor. Palaces of ruling families were a secondary focus.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The small city of Hallstadt, surrounded by mountains and anchored by the lake. The scenery was beautiful and we decided that the 2.90 euro gluhwein at the Lookout was the best deal around and it came with incredible surroundings. It was easy to find our way around to restaurants and shops. I also enjoyed the church that was twice as wide as it was deep.."

The Rick Steve's Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna 8 Day Tour was incredible! It exceeded all of my expectations. I believe I saw the best of each of these beautiful cities plus gorgeous Hallstatt, Austria. The itinerary was very busy but we had free time each day to do as we liked. I loved knowing what we would be doing each day; the choices of activities were really helpful to give us a flavor of these cities. And when I was too pooped to "go-go-go" any more, it was great to have the choice to be on my own and relax in the locale. Getting to know our fellow travelers was fun! We all brought our own spin and experiences to the table, and I think we all learned from each other. People are sweet.

"Visiting the Third Man Museum in Vienna was a treasure for me. Seeing the photographs and artifacts of life in Vienna during and after WWII was so moving and thought-provoking. This is a little-known museum; I never heard of it, and might not have gone had I just heard about it. But I am SO glad that it was part of our itinerary. IMO, you should keep this as a standard part of a Vienna tour. Anyone can go visit the Vienna Opera House; it's a special tour that takes you to a jewel like this."

I had been looking forward to a trip back to Germany for 53 years. My dad was stationed there when I was a child, and my dream was to go back someday. I researched tours for many years and finally decided this one would be best. It was wonderful. I was afraid the 8 days would be too short, but the pace, both busy and relaxing, was perfect and the length of time ideal. Memories were rekindled and new ones made. The brotchen, the flowers, the villages, the countryside. Lovely, lovely.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the brotchen, I loved Halstatt, I loved the red geraniums...I could go on and on. But the wow moment for me was probably the unexpected Strudel making class in Salzburg. And the strudel turned out--pretty AND tasty. Thank you for this unexpected gem of an experience!"

My wife and I couldn't have been happier with this tour! I was stationed in Germany in the U.S Army from 2001-2008. This was our first Rick Steves Tour, and after not traveling for 22 years, we were unsure of what to expect. After the initial booking, I was immediately put at ease. The communication, travel tips, and to-do lists that RS Tours provide leave nothing to chance. If one follows them, one can be assured of a great trip! It is so hard to summarize in the space given. But the tour delivered what I expected, but more so. Central hotels allowed us access to the city without all of the bus tourists. That was especially true in Salzburg. Local information from the guide about restaurants and sites allowed me to hone in on what I most wanted to see and do. I traveled solo, but fellow tour members were always inviting me to go to restaurants or other places with them. Overall, a very positive experience.

Having been on other Rick Steves tours, I was disappointed in this tour. My understanding of German culture and history was not expanded. I have no sense of Munich - not enough time spent there. Too much time to go and visit Neuschwannstein, not a very interesting castle with a terrible guide. The only time in Munich was on a Monday and most museums were closed - the guide neglected to tell us that. Barely any mention at all about the rise of Nazism in Munich which seemed odd to us.

The guide was not quite as good, some of the hotels were not quite as good and some of the food was not quite as good as previous tours. Salzburg, Halstatt and Vienna were very enjoyable cities.

We had a outstanding tour and I believe everyone in our group had many WOW moments. This tour was very well organizes and timely . No problems that were detected From the hotels that we stayed in to the meals, it was a fantastic experience. Would I have loved to stay in each location longer, but when you only 8 days, who can complain. Loved our tour guide and his knowledge and the tour assistant. Both were fantastic! others guides we awesome too!

"My WOW moment was the location and hotel in Hallstatt Austria. What an absolute lovely place and the room was fantastic. The balcony was facing the busy city center with a marvelous view. Felt like royalty!"

My family (wife & son) had a terrific time! We arrived several days early, and stayed a week afterward. Daniela is a terrific tour guide! This was our third RS tour - we really relate to Rick's "Europe through the back door" & "no grumps" philosophy. I recommend the Munich neighborhood walk include a walk-in at St. Peters to see the jeweled martyr (Die heilige Munditia). Our family skipped the apple strudel activity in Salzburg - too much to see in too little time there!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "Wow" moment was the Augustiner Braustubl beer garden in Salzburg (on solo walk during free-time, referenced in Rick's show & guidebook). I visited many beer gardens, but this was hands-down the best!!! I enjoy experiencing "Europe through the back door", and this was a classic moment... feasting on steckerfish (fish on a stick) & eine halbe helles (half liter brewsky), joining locals at a table under the Chestnut trees, and talked politics (primarily getting their perspective of Trump)."

Everything was wonderful. The hotels were great. The locations were convenient to things we wanted to see. The food was good, lots of variety. The balance of scheduled and non scheduled time was right. The things we saw as a group were fabulous. Daniela was an enthusiastic, delightful guide and our co-travelers were easy and interesting.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in your online customer account. About one month prior to the tour departure, in your customer account you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Munich and out of Vienna ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves guidebook.
