Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Prague

We'll meet in our hotel at 2 p.m. to get acquainted and go over the week's schedule. Then we'll hop on a local tram to take us across the Vltava River and up the hill to the most massive castle complex in continental Europe: Prague Castle. We'll tour the impressive St. Vitus Cathedral, home to Alfons Mucha's striking stained glass; the Old Royal Palace; St. George's Basilica (when available); and the Golden Lane. After a hearty dinner together, accompanied by the Prague Castle Orchestra, we'll cap our evening with a walk over the historic Charles Bridge — one of Europe's most entertaining promenades — to our hotel in the Old Town neighborhood.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Prague.

Day 2: Historic and Revolutionary Prague

This morning we'll meet a local guide for a walking tour through the heart of the Old Town discovering Prague's rich history and fascinating architecture. We'll learn first-hand of Prague's past struggles with communist occupation, the significance of the Prague Spring, and the emergence of Václav Havel. We'll then retrace the footsteps of Prague's celebrated Velvet Revolution, following the events of November 17, 1989, through the modern city to Wenceslas Square, where thousands of Czechs held up and rattled their keys, telling their communist leaders, "The time has come for you to go home." After free time for lunch, we'll take a peek at Prague's Art Nouveau scene on a tour of the classy concert halls and salons of the city's Municipal House (when available). Your evening will be free for dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Prague.

Day 3: Jewish and Classical Prague

Today we'll take a walking tour through the Josefov neighborhood, once the site of Prague's Jewish Ghetto — and still one of the most evocative Jewish districts in all of Europe. A leading center of Judaism for a thousand years, the neighborhood is studded with thought-provoking museums, fascinating synagogues, and a Kafkaesque, dream-like cemetery. You are free for lunch and the afternoon. This evening we'll gather to enjoy a Czech cultural performance and dinner together, where we'll raise a glass to our adventures in Prague. Na zdraví!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Prague.

Day 4: On to Budapest

This morning we'll board our coach for the drive to Budapest. En route we'll pass through the rolling hills of ancient Moravia and modern Slovakia, catching our first glimpse of the wide, blue Danube as we approach Hungary's capital city that straddles both banks of the river. We'll check into our hotel and gather together for an orientation walk through our neighborhood and treat ourselves to a Hungarian feast.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Budapest.

Day 5: Bustling Budapest

Historically separate until the late 19th century, this morning we'll tour Pest, the larger, more sprawling half of the city. We'll meet our local guide and ride the oldest metro in continental Europe on our way to Heroes' Square, where we'll learn about the bronze-cast, larger-than-life players in Hungary's history. We'll crane our necks at Europe's largest, most ornate parliament building to learn how Hungarians coped with half a century of fascist and communist tyranny. And outside St. István's elaborate basilica we'll learn why, once a year, locals parade the saint's millennium-old fist around the city. This afternoon, your guide will be happy to arrange a chance to soak in the ornate public thermal baths (yes, you'll have plenty of time to soak it all in!). After dinner on your own, we'll regroup and relax with a cruise along the Danube.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Budapest.

Day 6: Elegance of Empire and Refined Tastes

This morning, we'll tour the caked-in-splendor home of the Hungarian State Opera. Built in the 1880s, when Budapest was the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Hungarians took every opportunity to make their opera house more opulent than anything the Viennese could muster. You'll see they succeeded. After working up an appetite, we'll explore traditional Hungarian dishes with a hands-on cooking class and lunch. Save some room, as we'll discover more delicacies together in Budapest's impressive Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok). Your afternoon and evening are free to sample more of the city with dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Budapest.

Day 7: Buda Fortress and Palace

Today we cross the Danube and concentrate on Buda's proud Castle Hill. Our local guide will introduce us to this fortress complex of royal residences, churches, and museums where we'll learn about its strategic importance and historic significance. We'll explore a host of interesting buildings, streets and squares, taking in the sumptuously gilded Matthias Church and nearby Fisherman's Bastion, with sweeping views across the river of "twin-city" Pest. You'll be free for the afternoon to find lunch and explore more of Budapest on your own. Tonight we'll rendezvous for a farewell dinner together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Egészségedre!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Budapest.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Budapest's Ferenc Liszt Airport and three busy train stations can connect you to practically anywhere in Europe or your return home. Whatever your plans, your guide will help you get on the right track. Viszontlátásra!

The most organized tour I’ve ever been a part of! The hotels were centrally located to everything. The rooms were well thought out and included everything needed for comfort and convenience. There was a perfect balance between tours and free time. The “buddy system” saved so much time from guides having to count and recount heads to make sure everyone was there. The surprise entertainment from time to time was top notch. Local guides had so much wonderful personal input about their lives in the

I was impressed with my overall tour experience. The hotels were very nice, and the locations were outstanding. The guides were all the best I've ever experienced and made the trip incredible. The food and art (opera) experiences were unique, and something I would never have experienced had I planned this trip on my own. I enjoyed the balance of planned time and free time. It allowed me to see things I wanted to see that were particular to my interests without missing any of the tour.

This was my 1st tour with Rick Steves' & it very much exceeded my expectations. The tour was very well organized & the guides (Andrea, Honza, George) were very knowledgeable. They also shared personal stories about growing up with communism that just added to the cultural learning experience. The tour had a good balance of group activities & free time. The bus ride went by quick with 2 stops & scenic views. And my tour group consisted of some amazing people that made the trip more memorable.

Tour was a delight! Days were well-organized, with just the right amount of free time. All of the guides (truly, All) were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Tours were well-paced, coffee breaks were delicious, and our lead guide, Andrea, did a masterful job of conducting and coordinating. The other travelers, too, were a joy to be with. It truly felt like a band of merry adventurers.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'll offer two: the planned, and the unplanned. For the planned: the intimate opera performance (guide's choice, I believe), on the last day in Prague. The soprano, especially, brought me to tears. The performers even stayed back and talked with us after the show. For the unplanned: When we visited Matthias Church in Buda, just a few minutes into our talk, a man performed a stunning 15-minute set on the church organs. It was truly a "wow" moment because no one expected it, not even Andrea."

Prague & Budapest was our first Rick Steves' city tour, and it was great, as were all of our previous tours. Great tour guide, great local guides, great tour group. All members could keep up the walking pace this tour, which was a plus. With English spoken, you could tour on your own (with Rick Steves' Guide Books, but the guides, musical experiences and fellow travelers really add to the vacation experience. Too many synagogues used a full morning. Could have used another day in Budapest.

Rick Steve's Europe over-fulfilled its promise. The pre-travel communication and advice, the superb guides who were knowledgeable, experienced and enjoyable company, the friendship of fellow travelers all added up to an excellent value and memorable experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Chef Parade cooking experience was a a high point. I was dubious on how 23 people were going to "have a cooking class and cook lunch" but it worked out beautifully and was a great shared experience. Excellent!! As usual with RS the guides were stellar, especially Levente and Honza. Hotels are well situated and comfortable, plans run smoothly and we get to experience so much with the group while still having time on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Following Honza along the route he took as a 13-year-old in 1989 with his big sister and a sea of protesters as they tried to march to Wenceslaus square at the start of the Velvet Revolution. It was the most moving day as he told us about his experiences and what they could have cost, including his sister’s medical career. History come to life. Honza gave us an amazing education each day in Prague and I will never forget it."

My husband and I went on the Best of Prague & Budapest in 8 Days (Sept. 3-10). We arrived at the Hotel Leonardo and LOVED our room--the best of our trip. Etelna is an outstanding guide--very personable. She kept us on schedule in a pleasant, no-nonsense way. We appreciated Peter's tours of Prague and Monica's tours of Budapest.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We wanted to see the Black Light Theater in Prague. We had a terrible time finding it on Sept 4 (it had moved--guidebook update needed) & when we did, the performance was cancelled. From the website, it appeared to be sold out the only other day we could go, Sept. 5. We told Etelna about our disappointment. On her own, she called the theater. By sheer accident, we ran into her on the street and found out that we could go on 9/5 after all. The performance was wonderful."

This was our 3rd Rick Steves tour (Paris & Rome previously) and another exceptional experience! "The favorite 'wow' moments overal were hearing the stories of our guides and their lives in their countries especially living under communisism. History is so much deeper & richer hearing the experiences of people on an individual level. The Prague highlight or 'wow' moment was the architecture of the builings. This was our 6th RS tour and first city tour. Like all others it was well organized, had great content and plenty of free time to explore on your own. Our two city guides Honza and Andrea were with us each day They showed us much more than we have seen on our own. We found the tour to be well-organized, informative, and provided an insightful overview of the must see sites in Budapest and Prague. Our tour guide Monica was helpful, insightful, candid, humorous and took care of our individual needs. Our local guide in Prague was well steeped in history and culture and brought the city and the culture of the Czech Republic alive for us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We can't limit it to one, our top 3 were the cooking class, the velvet revolution walk, and the tour off the opera house with a live performance."

The tour was well run and had a good combination of history and culture in a part of the world with which I have had only a little contact and knowledge. I feel closer to the impressive cultural and political accomplishments of the Czech and Hungarian people.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment had to be the evening cruise on the Danube in Budapest. It was beautiful and at the same time something I had only dreamed of doing."

When To Go & Weather

Prague and Budapest are best to visit in the months of May, June, September, and October, when the weather is mild, the colors and scents are more powerful, and the crowds are lighter. December offers the benefits of no tourist crowds, and the Christmas markets and concert season are in full swing.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Prague (PRG) and out of Budapest (BUD) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to Prague or Budapest will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Prague guidebook.
