  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Ljubljana

We'll meet at our hotel in the pretty Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana at 4 p.m. After an orientation walk through our neighborhood, we'll enjoy getting acquainted over dinner together. Sleep in Ljubljana (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Architectural Riches of Ljubljana

Today we'll take a walking tour through the heart of Ljubljana, including the colorful riverside market, the playfully Art Nouveau Dragon Bridge, and the town's lively main square dedicated to Slovenia's greatest poet, France Prešeren. We'll also enjoy seeing and hearing about the architectural adventures of native born architect Jože Plečnik along the way. The afternoon and evening are yours to wander around this lovely city or try one of the outdoor cafés along the river. No bus. Walking: light.

Day 3: Slovenia's Lakes and Alps

A short drive into Slovenia's Julian Alps brings us to the azure jewel of Lake Bled. We'll take in the panoramic view from Bled's hilltop castle, then leave you with free time to stroll around the lakeside town, or maybe hop aboard a boat to the chapel-topped island. After lunch we'll have a scenically winding, mountain-pass drive to the breathtaking Soča River Valley, where we'll enjoy dinner of local delicacies together. Sleep in or near Kobarid (1 night). Bus: 6 hours. Walking: light.

Day 4: Crossing Paths with Hemingway

This morning we'll tour the local museum, learning about the WWI years when soldiers (including an ambulance driver named Hemingway) faced incredible hardship in the mountains around Kobarid, described in A Farewell to Arms. We'll enjoy a local-style lunch together, sampling the tasty pršut (prosciutto) and award-winning wines. We'll then follow Slovenia's small slice of Adriatic Coast on our way to the rolling hills of Croatia's Istrian Peninsula and the hill town of Motovun. Sleep in a former castle in Motovun (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Istrian Peninsula

We'll spend our day exploring the Istrian Peninsula, studded with Roman ruins, Venetian architecture, and a landscape evocative of pre-tourist Tuscany. We'll time-travel through Pula's first-century Roman amphitheater and Old Town with a local expert, then set you free to enjoy the seaside town of Rovinj. Hang out by the harbor, or walk the art-lined streets to the Church of St. Euphemia and learn the surprising legend of how the saint's sarcophagus got there. Tonight's dinner featuring local specialties will be in the tucked-away town of Brtonigla. We'll return to our Motovun hotel tonight, stuffed and happy. Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Opatija and Plitvice

Today we'll stop in seaside Opatija, where you'll have time to wander amidst its beautifully manicured parks and belle époque villas along the Kvarner Gulf, before heading inland to the deep greens and blues of Croatia's water wonderland and one of Europe's premier nature preserves: Plitvice Lakes National Park. We'll have dinner together and sleep in or near the National Park, surrounded by the quiet of nature (1 night). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: light.

Day 7: Lakes to the Coast

You'll have all morning to hike along rustic boardwalk trails connecting the idyllic forests, travertine stone cliffs, clear blue lakes, and gushing waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park. We'll learn how the park is creatively managing to protect its delicate environment, including the use of electric trams and boats. After a lunch break, we'll drive along the Dinaric Alps to the Dalmatian Coast and the not-so-sleepy seaside town of Split. This evening we'll take an orientation walk through town and enjoy dinner together. Sleep in Split (2 nights). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 5 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 8: The Roman Heart of Split

We'll get introduced to Split with a walking tour through its Old Town — including remains of the Roman Peristyle, the unusual Cathedral of St. Dominus, and Jupiter's Temple — all of which lies within the walls of the despotic Roman Emperor Diocletian's immense palace. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy Split's museums, including the sculptures of the world-class Meštrović Gallery, or relax with an espresso along the waterfront promenade. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Dalmatian Island-Hopping

After breakfast we'll board a boat bound for the Dalmatian island of Hvar, where you'll have free time to climb atop the fortress and explore the quaint old harbor town, fast becoming a ritzy haunt of Europe's jet-setting class. We'll end our island-hopping day in the more relaxed island town of Korčula, where we'll sleep (2 nights). Boat: 3 hours. Bus: 1 hour. Walking: moderate.

Day 10: Island Relaxation

Today you are free to wander the narrow cobbled streets of Korčula's medieval quarter, poke around its Cathedral of St. Mark, and imagine the tales its Venetian villas could tell. This could also be a fun day to go for a swim or rent a boat. We'll dry off and regroup for a little happy hour boat cruise in the evening. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 11: Eye-Opening Bosnia-Herzegovina

We'll begin our day with a short ferry ride back to the mainland and stop in the fortress town of Ston for free time and lunch. Then we'll cross the border into formerly war-torn Bosnia-Herzegovina and make our way to Mostar, a town that serves up a fascinating blend of south Slavic, Ottoman Turkish, and Mediterranean cultural traditions. Before dinner together, our local guide will take us on a thought-provoking walk and teach us about war and the siege of Mostar in the 1990s. We'll visit Mostar's rebuilt Old Bridge, the Kujundžiluk bazaar, and a traditional mosque. Sleep in Mostar (1 night). Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 4 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 12: Rural Herzegovina

Today we'll take a long and scenic country drive through untouristed Herzegovina on our way to Dubrovnik. En route we'll discover the source of the Buna River and share coffee in the village of Blagaj before stopping in nearby Stolac to see the medieval stećci tombstones that dot the fields and learn about the town's tumultuous past. After lunch together we'll drive through the predominantly Serbian Republika Srpska region, stopping along the way to learn about the role of Orthodox religion in this area. After we arrive at our hotel in Dubrovnik, your guide will orient you to this Pearl of the Adriatic, then set you free to sample the local cuisine and do a little exploring on your own. We'll sleep outside Dubrovnik's old city wall in the Lapad district, right by the sea (2 nights). Bus: 6 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 13: Dazzling Dubrovnik

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of the architectural treasures within the 800-year-old city walls of Dubrovnik, long ago its own republic and a rival of the powerful Venetians. We'll learn about the city's dramatic history — including the siege of 1991 — as we tour its traffic-free promenade and old harbor. Then you'll be free to roam this stone city and its walkable walls that seem to have sprouted up out of the sea. Tonight we'll have a feast of local specialties together as we share travel memories and toast new friends. Živjeli! No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Dubrovnik's airport is just 40 minutes away. From there, you can fly to Zagreb and other European cities. Whatever your plans, your guide will help you get on the right track. Do viđenija!

THe tour met our expectations and was rich in history. The guide was very good and provided not only historical knowledge but was professional and personable. The personal experiences of all the guides who survived the 90's war and what happened to their families was informative and helped define for us the war effects on individuals. The scenery was beautiful and the tour had a variety of things to see in each country.

The tour was excellent. We saw all of the essential sights and learned a tremendous amount about the area and its history. It had mountains, war history and the Jet Setter's Adriatic island playgrounds. It also went to Bosnia which has many fewer tourists. It was fascinating to see how much progress has been made in some areas and how much there is to do in others following the 1990's war. The guides including the local guides were right on point and extremely knowledgeable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I am very interested in history. The tour covered the 1990's Balkans War very completely. This war was very confusing and the tour very effectively covered the "why's" of the conflict including historical issues simmering up after decades or centuries had passed, religious issues, forced ethnic migration and the effect of the break up of Yugoslavia after WWII. As a bonus the 2 local guides had lived thru it and had harrowing tales of their close brushes with death and living thru it."

The people on the tour were just great. We became a family and supported each other. Barbara took good care of us the whole time. And Ben was a very good support guide. I would like to go on a tour that he guides. And the hotels were fine. My Partner and I happened to receive two hotels with really outstanding rooms. What a treat!!! When I told Barbara and Ben that I had been sick, they really asked me often, if I was feeling better. I did get better and was pleased that they cared.

"I think the Plitvice National Park in Croatia was great. We got there early in the morning and not as many people as showed up later. The water falls and lakes were so very beautiful. The dinner in Mostar was very good, and I enjoyed the Turkish food."

One of our best tours. All of our travel mates were very nice. The tour went flawlessly. We have been wanting to visit this area for sometime, and this trip unexpectedly came about.

"Of the many highlights I would pick Korcula. A picture around every turn and an overall beautiful setting. Great food, very accessible. A great place for a day off. A very nice feature. Thanks for scheduling the full moon for our trip! All adding to a very memorable time."

My husband and I last saw some of the areas on this tour in 1973. We were hitch-hiking and limited to the places and areas that our ride was headed to. So I was thrilled to be able to see Slovenia, Croatia and a bit of Bosnia in such splendid detail. This is the third RS tour I have done and once again, was extremely pleased. The stories and history of the places and people were very interesting and also poignant with details of the recent war.

"We stopped in two small towns in Bosnia-Herzegovina and met our local guide, Sanel. In his home town, Stolac, he told us about a Non-Government Organization that he and other community members work to bring families and children together across cultures and religion to overcome the divisions of the war. We met some of the kids and teachers. I was so moved and impressed, "wowed" that this important, small, yet huge organization was part of our trip experience."

It was well organized. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable regarding the region we were traveling in. The Baltic countries have a very convoluted history. It was helpful having a tour guide that understood the complexities which helped further our understanding of the conflicts these experienced. The food was great, especially the seafood. The Adriatic was romantic and beautiful. I love that our hotels allow easy acces to walking the cities.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were on the island of Korcula and it was evening. The moon was full and it's reflection, in the water, made a straight line to where we sat enjoying dinner. It was stunning. I felt so luck to be there in that moment with the person I most cherish."

This trip started out for us as a chance/reason to go back to Europe, see some sights we hadn't, & visit a few places we had seen very briefly many years ago. It was all that but it became a lot more. The cultural dynamic, the history (from Diocletian to Kobarid to Mostar & Stolac) and even the geology made it all far more interesting than I expected. Places I never would have thought of visiting (a WWI museum? A Dervish lodge? A ski jump? A Turkish house?) all added so much to the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There is the beauty of Ljubljana & Lake Bled; the wonderful ancient cities of Split and Pula, swimming at Korcula, & the stunning walls and maze of Dubrovnik. But my real 'wow' moments were the more recent history brought to life by our guides: Mostar: the bridge, & buildings still riddled by shrapnel; Dubrovnik: fox-holes on Mt Srd. The empty swimming pool in Stolac. But my #1: the amazing curator and museum of WWI in Kobarid. He made something 100 years old & a long way from us fascinating."

My first bus tour since I was a travel agent in my early 20s. I'm a big cruiser and about halfway through I wondered, is bus touring REALLY for me? Then we had a 2 day break in Split, jet lag subsided and I got into the groove of living out of a suitcase. Yes, I could handle what everyone else had learned to do on multiple Rick Steves and other bus tours. Amir kept us well informed about the days activities and times, no one delayed us, meals were awesome and local guides great. Autumn perfect!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Plitivice Park! It was the reason for "going inland" in the fall, on Rick's PBS recommendation, and it did not disappoint. I worried because I ended up with bursitis in my hip 2 weeks before travel and ALMOST cancelled, but the doc fixed me up with decent care and I was able to make it, so were those with canes and other afflictions. It's a reason to take this trip ant time, but I felt like we had it to ourselves at some points. Also the totally unexpected boat excursion from Korcula. Full moon!"

Such a variety with the Adriatic Sea, the wonderful ancient cities and the delightful people we met. This was our SEVENTH RS tour and they've all been fantastic. I just wish that Rick could try the Baltic States (besides Tallinn) and get to Poland a little more.

"We absolutely adore Ljubljana and are glad we spent 3 extra days there. To me, the whole country is gorgeous and people are very nice. Our Steves' recommended B&B PETRA VARL right on the market square was delightful. The City rates a 10 with us. In second lace was a visit to KORCULA and HVAR. Beautiful islands! This was followed by a great experience in Bosnia, even in the pouring rain. How lucky can you get?"

This was a very busy tour it seemed and a lot of bus time. Not my favorite Rick Steves tour. No major WOW moments like other tours. That may just be because I have taken so many now I know what to expect. Could have done without the whole Bosnia experience truthfully. I feel like this was a ploy to help support a re-emerging nation by tourism. I would have liked more time in some of the other places. Saso is a real winner. The group worked very well together. No grumps or issues.

Overall, I was pleased with the tour. We not only saw the usual tourist spots, but visited many areas which I never would have found on my own, which added greatly to the trip. Our guide was good, and the local guides were good. Bus was clean and the driver excellent. Hotels were adequate but had problems. Dry traps lead to sewer gas infiltration into room; awful. One restaurant had strong smell of cat urine; made meal experience terrible. The restaurants that we found on our own were without exception better than the ones that the tour went to, and the prices (at least on the menu) were about the same. Salt seems to be the only "flavoring" in common.

I had a great time. The tour was informative. Saso and the local guides gave me personal insights into their countries. Their stories made the countries more personal to me. Stephen, the assistant, was also helpful.

"My "wow" moments were interactions with the local people. One was a young woman passing Alzheimer's materials in Ljubljana. She said to me, "We are all in the same journey together with this crushing disease." She was so right. We are all one global family. Traveling opens my eyes. My second "wow" moment was visiting the children's center in Stolag, Bosnia. Seeing the next generation being raised as one, and religion does not need to divide us. So again, we are a global society."

Excellent guides (both overall and various local guides) and well organized from start to finish. The RS tours attract a great group of fellow travelers too. I learned a lot about the region and definitely got to see more in two weeks than I would have done if I was traveling independently (which is my normal travel mode). It was an enjoyable tour. Well organized, good accommodations, great food, seamless transportation throughout, wonderful sites and knowledgeable guides. Tina, our guide, really knows her business. We were fortunate enough to have a tour with really interesting people who were polite and easy to engage in conversation.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The sites, the guides, the whole trip was outstanding. What really stood out to me was how generous Tina was to the group and to the other guides and people who supported the tour such as the hotel staff, restaurant owners and workers. It was symbiotic. I think Tina was very conscious of how much we all benefitted from our mutual interaction."

Tina Hiti was a guide to lead all tours. She conveyed expectations at the start and continued to enforce them throughout the trip. Yet she provided nurturing attention to participants that was appreciated, especially the treat on the bus following the raindrenched tour of Plitvice National Park. She gave attention to each person and expressed concern for our wellbeing throughout. Love her!

"The war museum in Kobarid was an unexpected enlightenment; could call that a "wow". Wish we could have stayed longer at this site so we could absorb all the historic information. Appreciated that the presentation of war was not about "heroes" but about the devastation to the common people. Also, we learned of the occupations by many empires of that part of Slovenia."

The experience that a traveler has is often defined by a number of items, including the quality and leadership of the tour guide, the bus driver, the places that are visited, in the cities and countryside, and the comradery between the rest of the travelers on the tour group. For our tour, all of these were much better than the other tours to Europe that we have taken. A tremendous amount of work has gone into the careful planning of this excursion.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A visit to Europe by independent travel or with a guided tour certainly opens our mind to the bigger world that we live in. Visiting the Adriatic portion of Europe was a different experience, because both our guide Tina and the local guides introduced us to these countries, but also shared both the pain and hope for this region after their prolonged war in the 1990s. It was a "wow" moment to have them share with us both their pain and their bewilderment of this time on a personal level."

All of the elements of a Rick Steves Tour were present and did not disappoint. Mostly good hotels, good food, GREAT driver(Janis), excellent Tour Guide (Barbara), excellent bus and audio. The places we visited were very nice to outstanding. The people on the tour were ALL friendly and lovely traveling companions, perhaps even more so than the other two tours we took in the past. The weather which can cast a pall was a little dicey in Lake Bled but overall pretty good,we felt lucky overall.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to choose but I'd have to say the first half of our Plitvice tour. I was able to shoot pictures as we sped through the paths, the maddening throng nipping at our heels. Ironically its evil twin (or my LEAST favorite - and coming in a close second would be the Dubrovnik wall walk) is the SECOND half where we were in a horrible crush of people - completely packed in and unable to move, take pictures or slow down for fear of being trampled. Awful."

We had a great tour. Barbara was fantastic. Very knowledgable. The only drawback was the time on the bus. I wish we could have spent at least two nights at each hotel. The hotels we stayed at were great. However we enjoyed some areas like Montevan and Korcula more than others.

Before signing up, we talked to people who raved about this tour. It exceeded our expectations. Beautiful, intriguing countries, a great tour director, and a fun and friendly group of tour companions. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. My suggestion to anyone who signs up for this tour: always carry Euro in small denominations for purchasing opportunities, even in countries that use another form of currency.

"Bosnia-Herzegovina - I was not prepared to see the damage that is still evident in Moster. It was a sobering reminder of the devastating effects of war. In contrast, it was encouraging to visit the school that supports Roma children. It was a testimonial to those individuals\organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of children who live in extremely difficult environments."

We LOVED Ljubljana!! We arrived 2 days before the R.S.Tour began which allowed us extra time to explore this beautiful city..the outdoor Saturday market was delightful, the locals were cordial, the food was wonderful! The Hotel Mrak was nicely located, the breakfasts very tasty. The Julian Alps and Lake Bled were lovely sights(even tho' it rained). The WW1 Museum near Kobarid was enlightening and very moving (the letters). The older gentleman curator was so knowledgeable. Motovun'

"Korcula was probably our favorite spot! Such a walkable seaside city with beautiful vistas, tasty restaurants, and special shops! It was difficult to leave this island city! Another favorite day was the one spent in Plitvice Park..the floating boardwalks, the forests, lakes, and, of course, the awesome waterfalls! Pula's amphitheater was well-preserved for it's era. Of course Dubrovnik was the ultimate destination and the old city did not disappoint...WOW and AWESOME!!"

There was much to love on this trip. Ljubljana was lovely. I did not expect to like Split as well as I did. The day off in Korcula was the perfect place to recharge. The visit to Mostar really put the Yugoslavian story into perspective, and for that reason was well worth the trip. I know the weather cannot be controlled, but the rain and snow did subtract from potential "WOW" moments when visiting Lake Bled and driving over the Vrsic pass.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It seems somewhat insignificant compared to grand moments. After our group dinner in Split, our tour guide treated the group to the best gelato of the trip, and then led us into the Peristyle. This was my first time traveling on a tour. Friends suggested it as a way of having company as a single traveler, with people to share experiences and meals with. On that level it was a success; I liked everyone in our group, felt welcomed as a single by everyone and enjoyed the company. I am, however, an experienced traveler on my own, and enjoy the planning and logistics involved in traveling in new countries on public transport, so found the bus and time constraints limiting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Bosnia was by far the best part of the tour for me. I probably would not have thought to go there on my own, it pulled the whole division of Yugoslavia into a different perspective , and so it made the tour something I could not say I could have done all that on my own."

Excellent hotels, food, local travel guides. Great stops..number of places visited, scheduling of each day Tour was busy and meeting the bus most days by 8 was a challenge for this mostly retired group That said I wouldn't give up any of the stops for a few more minutes of sleep! The general design of the tour was well thought out and the countries and areas visited were very interesting. Without a doubt, Slovenia and Croatia are two of the easiest countries we have experienced in Europe. Perhaps that's because nearly everyone we encountered spoke some English and communications was simply not an issue. I understand their rationale for learning English but it's not something Americans should take for granted. The people were most friendly and very enjoyable to engage in conversations. Eastern Europe has a complicated past and is not well understood by most Americans.

The trip had all of the elements I love about R. S. Tours. High energy mixed with a couple of days to recoup or go at a slower place. Loved rowing a boat with my daughter around the church island on Lake Bled. Totally wowed by Pleitvice National Park. The old towns of Hvar, Korcula, and Dubrovnik were all highlights of the trip. My wife and I were veterans of the "My Way" tours, having taken 4 of them in recent years. We loved that format, as it allowed us to move at our own pace and see all that we thought we wanted to see, while bypassing some of the activities a full tour might have scheduled that may not have been a priority for us. We were a bit apprehensive. Our experience on the 14 day Adriatic tour proved to be just the opposite. Amir was unbelievable, humanizing aspects of a truly remarkable tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were "WOW"ed at every stop of this tour and the bus ride between each one. Ljubliana is beautiful and unspoiled. The Julian Alps offered Lake Bled and the Plitvicka Jezera Waterfall Park. Many more hours could have been spent in Kobarid's WWI Museum. Bosnia's Mostar and Stalac were sober reminders of a tragic recent past. Our local guides there were amazing. Every day on the Best of the Adriatic in 14 Days Tour was exceptional. The beautiful sights (blue-green sea, rushing rivers-including one coming directly out of a cave, rocky hills and mountains, ancient city walls and narrow streets); a worldly and philosophical Bosnian guide who imparted the complicated history and his hope for ex-Yugoslavia-all the while taking such good care of the details and people on the tour; and the curious, interesting, and travel-loving tour members were wonderful.

This is our 3rd RS tour and was absolutely fabulous. Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia were all very beautiful countries. The English language was well spoken in most areas. The places that we visited were all well planned and enjoyed by all. Obviously, in some cases more time would be great, but with the area we were covering, that wasn't possible. Everyone on the tour became friends and got along very well together. I would recommend this tour to anyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "wow" moment is difficult to determine because each day we seemed to have another "wow" moment. With that being said, Mostar was probably our "wow" moment. Enlightening. Surprising. Found out about things we weren't aware of. Learning the history of the area was helpful, especially given how long, complicated, and confusing it could be. Overall a great tour. One of the most interesting and enjoyabe trips I have ever taken. I was in Viet Nam in the bad-old-days and the days in Bosnia raised a lot of my war demons that I am very good at supressing. The evidence of death, destruction and human suffering was very evident. Tina Hiti has so much passion for being a tour guide. She exudes enthusiasm and energy. I loved her talks about Croatia and Slovenia. You really felt that you got to know both countries: their food, wine, culture, current economic situation, historic sites. Playing the "name game" at the beginning of the tour really bonded us together. We became a group of friends traveling together rather than people on the same bus. I really appreciated the photocopied maps of each city.

Hi guys. If You want an overall tour experience, read Ricks book. (Cro & Slo. 6th Ed) It has to be the most up-to-date, insightful, detailed, honest, logistic planing, experience expectation source imaginable. We carry our copy with us and are stopped frequently by other travelers, Stevies and not, to extol the trip enriching tips it offers. It's the perfect launch pad to, with Rick's training, venture off on our own. His tours include the most notable sights in a balanced-pace adventure.

This was my first experience with a group tour. I've traveled on my own quite a bit, and have always been reluctant to join a tour, dreading lock-step constraints and potentially difficult fellow tour members. The bus carried 27 curious travelers, a seasoned bus driver, and a charming and knowledgeable tour leader. Citizens of the Adriatic countries have really suffered in the last century: wars that killed thousands of their young men, economic calamity as a result, and horrific memories that live on in their collective stories. However, the local guides are the caretakers of these memories; they were passionate about change and invited others to witness these changes.

The mountains of Slovenia are ever beautiful where not so long ago many fine young men perished. Beauty prevails."

"So many places were beautiful or interesting or impressive, it's hard to pick. We watched a full moon rise over Split while we had dinner on our anniversary which was amazing. The waterfalls in Plitvice were spectacular but the most important experience for me was the time we spent in Bosnia and the personal stories we heard from Adisa and Edin. That will stay with me the longest."

We have done 2 other tours with Rick Steves and your tour guides continue to be the strength of the tours. They are knowledgeable, fun, organized, our guide for this tour was amazing. This was my 7th Rick Steves' tour - unique in it's own way. Interesting, considerate, and personable tour mates. Awesome tour guide, Sašo who arranged and attended to every detail with care and consideration. The hotels were comfortable and convenient, shared meals delicious and local tour guides informative and knowledgeable. The beautiful Adriatic coast was a contrast to war torn Bosnia which was a humbling experience brought to present with outstanding guides.

This tour exceeded our expectations in every way and was a memorable trip. It was our first tour of any kind, and most likely not our last. It was such a pleasure having all of the arrangements made for us and having the driving done by a pro. And we enjoyed the group we were with. Our guide Saso went above and beyond to make the tour a success.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our tour guide Saso arranged for a wedding anniversary dinner at a restaurant overlooking Split and the Adriatic. If that wasn't romantic enough, he also arranged for a full moon to rise over the Adriatic for a spectacular view. There were many other wow moments, but that one stands out for us."

This was our third Rick Steves tour, and perhaps the best of the three. We learned a lot about a relatively little-known area of Europe. Saso was a typically outstanding Rick Steves guide; he knew his topics, enabled our group to come together, helped us to set reasonable goals, and was a lot of fun. My wife and I have spent quite a bit of time discussing all that we learned and experienced.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I've had difficulty identifying one "wow" moment. There were many. Perhaps it was our first view of Dubrovnik as we came down the hill towards the city. That was thrilling. Some more poignant moments stand out in my mind as well: the empty homes, and buildings full of bullet holes, in Bosnia, contrasted with the energy and apparent peace in Mostar today."

First Rick Steves tour, I was travelling on my own and it was wonderful to not worry about trains planes and automobiles. Darija and Milan took care of all the transportation and accommodation issues. I just sat back, learned new things, enjoyed the scenery and met fabulous and interesting fellow travellers. Great combination of relaxing along the beautiful Adriatic Sea, with meaningful learning from personal guides along the way about the impact of the recent Bosnian and Croatian wars. Several powerful thunderstorms and torrential rain storms added memories to the trip. (Lightening storms with power outage while staying in the dramatic backdrop of a castle on a hill.... we thought we were perhaps in a movie setting!) Our humble, yet humorous Bosniak guide took exceeding great care of us!

I loved this active trip to a region that I was less familiar with than other parts of Europe. I was expecting to find a large bit of the trip would be somewhat uninspiring but was pleasantly surprised both at the scenery as well as the history and architecture. For me the highlights included some very little parts of the trip such as the WC stop on the Julian Alps in which we were given a bit of time to observe the ski jumpers practicing (sans snow.)

This was our first Rick Steves tour, but not our first group tour experience. We were very pleased with our guides, itinerary, details of the planning, and amount of free time that we had to explore on our own. We both felt we learned a lot. All of this compares with our previous group travel, but what does not, is the number of people in the group. Traveling with 26 other people is not "small group" travel. Past small group (16 max) was comparable in price to this.

"There were a lot of "wow" moments, but the part that stands out was our visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina - to Mostar and the Stolac - the hometown of our guide, Sanel Maric. This was an up close and personal way of learning the impact of war."

We had a fabulous time on our Rick Steves tour, our seventh. We were accompanied by a wonderfully compatible, curious & fun group of travelers; learned so much from two knowledgeable & enthusiastic guides (along with excellent local guides along the way); were awed by breathtakingly beautiful scenery; ate & drank well; learned about the recent history of the countries we visited through the eyes of those who lived through it, and through them witnessed what resilience & hope look like.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several standouts: exploring Lake Bled and Plitvice Park, the WWI museum, visiting the NGO our guide, Salen, is involved with, simply taking in the beauty of the natural world along the way. But the biggest "wow" was gaining an appreciation for what the people in this region have experienced over the years, being inspired by their resilience and hope, and recognizing more deeply our common humanity, no matter our circumstances. "Wow" moments for me are invariably "people moments"."

What a tour! We had a wonderful time, traveling with engaging, knowledgeable companionson on our Adriatic tour This was our first RS tour, choosing it because it seemed to be a challenge to do on our own. We were surprised how each location was more interesting than we imagined. Ljubljana was charming, I loved driving through the Alpine areas, the coastal towns were pleasnt, and Bosnia thought provoking. The hotels were very much above expectations. And of course Tina, our guide, was the best.

Tina did an amazing job. She told us several times how happy she is working for Rick. Having an in country guide is better than having someone who does not live there. The Adriatic is a secret to most Americans. The countries are beautiful and people friendly.

This tour opened my eyes and mind to the countries of Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina. They were more interesting and beautiful than I expected even with evidence of prior war and destruction. Our guide, Tina shared her own experiences during the time of conflict which added to my understanding of her and the people of Slovenia.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The first was while at Plitvice Lakes National Park. Visiting a national park didn't seem all that exciting . However, the park was incredibly beautiful with more waterfalls than I've ever seen in such near proximity. The beauty of the park is beyond words to describe. My second "wow" moment was in Mostar as our local guide was talking about the war and siege of Mostar and how it impacted his life."

Where do I begin....First time Rick Steves tourer. I had a great time. We travel a lot but not much in Europe and have mostly done our own thing( wife is a project manager). We have used Ricks book for London and on our baltic cruise. First cudos for our tour guide Tina and her bus driver Milan. I didn't know very much about the countries we visited so I enjoyed learning about the history of Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzogovenia, especially how WWI and II and the Yugoslavia war effected them. I was also amazed at the beauty and rich diversity of these countries as we explored cities, lakes, waterfalls, coastlines and islands along with delicious food and great wine!

Beautiful scenery, compelling history and great food and wine with a fascinating guide and a nice group of people. Glad that we were able to get a bonus trip to the Lipica Stud Farm, but I would have preferred to spend more time there (see 16 below) Starting Plitvice walk at Upper Lakes was a brilliant way to avoid the crowds. Would much rather have had additional time there (finished walk at 11:50 and left the park at 12:20) rather than spending the time saved at the lunch rest stop.

This was my first Rick Steves tour, and I was very impressed and pleased with how well everything was run. In a foreign environment, the logistics of traveling and sightseeing can be the most frustrating if you are on your own. The stop in Bosnia was both eye opening and heartbreaking, and our guide was very interesting. But my wow moment was the walk thru the natural beauty of the Plitvice Lakes. The clear waters and sounds of the waterfalls were very peaceful. We arrived ahead of the large tours and had a very beautiful visit."

The tour totally lived up to my expectations. . .I had heard all good things about this tour! The scenery was breathtaking and I learned SO MUCH about an area which I had known very little. The history was fascinating and I certainly understand more now about the war in the 1990's. Our Guide, Marijan was so good at explaining a very complicated history. I was so impressed with the warmth of the people, the beauty of the countries and the itinerary was wonderful EVERYDAY!

"Everyday I thought I had found my WOW moment but I think my favorite was Dubrovnik and walking that city wall. However my natural beauty WOW moment was Plitvice Lakes where we hiked 7 miles past lakes, falls, and streams which were clear, and beautiful in color. My local guide WOW moment was the young man who was Curator at the WWI Museum. He WOWED me with his knowledge and brought this period of history alive for me."

Once again, Rick Steves tours have given me a new perspective on another part of this world of ours. The recommended preparatory readings and TV/movie viewing along with the explanations by those who lived and worked in the countries and cities visited have given me an appreciation for people and history that cannot be developed without experiencing the area itself. ThIs area is now on my "highly recommended" list for beauty, friendliness, food, and history.

"Having no prior experience in this geography, all of the cities and towns visited were a pleasant surprise, as was our day spent in Plivicka National Park. The most USEFUL day was, by far, the day spent with Sanel in Stolac. He did a laudable job explaining the very convoluted political environment in Bosnia. Full understanding could only come with living in this region for a long time, but he explained the elements of social and political life very well -- I was impressed with this guy!"

I am a first time Rick Steves adventurer. My expectations were based on friends that had been on several Rick Steves tours. Every expectation is was exceeded, from the meals that were provided, the size of the tour, the expertise of Marijan, and each of the local guides. The cities and locations chosen were wonderful. I especially liked the extensive historical background Marijan narrated during the bus rides and at the various locations. It made the history of that part of the world come alive.

"I waited two weeks before doing this survey in order to let a specific "wow" moment percolate to the surface of my memory. A single one has not. The places were all wow in their own ways. My fondest memories are sitting at a restaurant with friends, enjoying a beer, and recounting all the experiences of the day. The joy of sidewalk dining and enjoying the unhurried style of European dining are some of my greatest memories."

I was very pleased with the trip. It was more informative than I had expected and I experienced many local foods, cultures, and people of the area. Those are things I value when I travel. Marijan Kriskovic was an exceptionally good tour guide. He dealt with all the unexpected issues on the trip with humor and respect. He never even "hinted" a negative thought or comment. It was an interesting group of people. I enjoyed the tour locations and the free time we were offered.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is very difficult for me to choose "one" wow experience. The antiquity of the area with it's long history of multiple rulers speaks volumes. I guess, for me, the more outstanding moment was walking through the cities in Bosnia where there was such devastation, just twenty some years ago, and yet the people have such a positive spirit. Our tour guide, who was a child during the war, told us today they are trying to help the children have more open minds."

An excellent experience overall, with a variety of venues that all contributed to an understanding of what is (for most Americans) a generally poorly understood part of the world. Through the expertise of our main and local guides we all came away with knowledge of and respect for these countries. As always with RS tours, well-planned and executed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Really multiple wow moments. Ljubljana was architecturally and culturally fantastic, and going to hear the President speak at the annual "Open Palace" and ending up receiving a personal tour and posing for pictures with the President and his family was surreal. Walking Lake Bled and Plitvice Lakes National Park, and seeing the Julian Alps and the Soca River Valley were delights. Hvar and Korcula and Split were places that will always remind me of their pleasures when I hear their names."

As has been my experience every time, this tour was wonderfully organized in all the small but crucial details, which left time to experience Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia in all their beauty and history. I found our guide, Saso, to be funny, serious, incredibly knowledgable and kind. Our members quickly bonded and shared many good times and conversations together. Ist. Rick Steves tour. Interesting and varied travel companions. Nice pacing between group and individual time. Fantastic local guides to fill in the history of different places. In a way the tour was a sampling of places I can return to and spend more time on my own. Saso was really, really good. The former Yugoslavia was especially nuanced. This tour was fabulous. We lucked out in two ways: our guide Amir and a highly compatible group of travelers. Actually, it's only the compatible group that was lucky. Clearly, the choice to hire Amir as a guide was based in knowledge and inspiration. He is so well suited, by life experience and his interests, to lead this tour, gradually introducing and building our understanding for the complicated history and politics of the region! The itinerary was great, but I can't imagine it without Amir!

The Adriatic area is certainly a very beautiful part of the world. Amir was an excellent guide, had experienced the many changes in the former Yugoslavia personally, and was highly informed and passionate, especially about his own Bosnia. He was also very attentive to the needs of each of us. I must say that compared to my other RS Tours, this itinerary visited more heavily-touristed sites, especially small places dominated by tourists. Except in Bosnia, this was a very touristy itinerary.

"(1) Our time in Bosnia, when we visited small, out-of-the-way towns and sites, which certainly few other travelers get to experience; (2) I adored strolling the hill town walls of Motovun just after dawn, looking down on the countryside from above the clouds -- more Tuscany than Tuscany! I hope to find the right words to express the joy each day experiencing the cities, countryside and people. My cell phone battery was low by the end of the day with all the pictures I took. Loved the area. Enjoyed the included tours and free time. The tour director was fabulous. I'd do another tour with her.

After using Rick Steves' material for years, this was our first tour, so expectations were mixed. The quality of the hotels were higher than I expected. The age mix for our group was pretty homogeneous and how well we all traveled together somewhat surprised me. I really fell in love with some of the towns and cities we visited and would certainly like to return to Ljubljana, Motovun and Korcula for extended stays in the future.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Without a doubt the "wow" moment was our visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Despite sometimes heavy rain, the views were breathtaking. I have traveled extensively throughout the US National Park System and this place ranked with some of best places I've visited. My views were shared by many of my fellow travelers from the tour, who were also drenched to bone."

This was my first Rick Steve's tour and first guided vacation and I didn't know quite what to expect. I enjoyed the tour, our tour director, the many places we visited, the folks we traveled with and the cultural and historical education our tour director provided. But I would have liked to have had a bit more free time on the tour to explore some of the places we visited and to get more exercise. Given the large size of the group I realize it is difficult to accommodate everyone's interests.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had spent a summer in college studying Serbo-Croatian and traveling all over the former Yugoslavia, visiting many of the same places that this tour encompassed. For me the biggest oh wow moment was seeing Mostar again, the destruction of the historic city, its many grave sites and its slow recovery. Quite sad."

The tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide Darija was amazing. I wouldn't hesitate to go anywhere in the world with her. Our bus driver, Thomas was skilled and professional. They were both the best. Going to Croatia is something I've planned for years but had I done it on my own I would have missed so much. Including Slovenia and Bosnia was brilliant. I'm so happy to have experienced all the countries and cities we visited.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Ljubljana was a treat and a great place to start our tour. Plitvice Lakes National Park is spectacular, Motovun, Opatija, Pula all amazing. My favorites are the Island and town of Korcula, Dubrovnik, and our time in Bosnia, because I learned so much. My "wow" moment was slipping away from the tour and visiting the town where my grandfather born in Croatia. My husband and I then caught a local bus and met up with the group in Bosnia. Darija helped me achieve this life long dream!"

Tina, our group leader was superior! Also Tina and the guides in the various locations provided a fine insight about what happened in the former Yugoslavia and the current situation. I can see that the tour could be expanded. I would really like to spend at least a week in Solvenia, a week-plus in Croatia and more time in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The area is fascinating and truly a great place to visit. The "rest from the vacation" on the island of Korcula was outstanding.

Superb exposure to that part of the world. Fine overview, some areas covered in depth - taken on a daily basis actually somewhat overwhelming. Well organized, very efficient use of time. In fact, even when there was open time, suggestions for its use far exceeded that available leaving a sense that additional time to experience more of these possibilities and the locality at hand, in general, would be highly desirable.

I really enjoyed this tour experience. Tina made the countries come alive both culturally and historically. It was a blend of modern and past on this tour which left me feeling that that this region has much to offer the many different kinds of visitors. One can focus on history from Roman to present times, outdoor lovers can revel on the Adriatic or hike the Julian Alps or you can immerse yourself in the wine and food of these countries.

Best Romantic trip I ever took. The Adriatic coastal towns and views fully rival the best of the Italian west coast or lakes. Excellent tour guides provided a personal viewpoint of their lives and experiences in this part of the Balkans.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Tie! One wow moment was the Dalmatian Island hopping trip on an azure sea to Hvar and the fun day at Korcula. Narrow streets lined with old limestone buildings made one feel as though the place just belonged to you. Equally wow-ing, the Plitvice Lakes National Park surpassed my expectations of the Karst landscape, waterfalls, and lakes. The decisive reason I took this tour over that of a competitor was that your tour went here."

We joined because of the PBS shows we had seen with Rick talking about the history of places and people and the activities that each place provided. It took a couple of days to realize that any "activities" we needed to come up with on our own. There is only so much "sitting at a side-walk cafe and watching the people for 3 hours " one can do. We will have to look at the We had one group activity at the very end, a harbor cruise we all enjoyed.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was interesting that all of the WOW moments from the group discussed the last night were not "tour" related, but something they had done by themselves. My WOW moment was when we had rental a small skiff in Korcula. We were pulled over by the naval police and one look at our passports and they let us go. It is good to be an American>"

This tour provided a very good balance of guided sites and activities and ample free time to explore sites on our own or relax when needed. It included a nice variety of beautiful scenery and historical venues along with a good introduction to the culture and customs of the people of this region. Transportation (bus, ferries, boats, etc.) was excellent. Hotels, included meals, and local guides were generally very good. Our guide was very knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Most of the entire tour was a "wow" moment. I wasn't fully prepared for the beauty and charm of the Adriatic region until I could experience it in person. I was particularly impressed with the friendliness and warmth of the local people we met in sharing their stories and showing a genuine interest in learning more about us in America. Ljubljana, Lake Bled, the Julian Alps, Plitvice Lakes National Park, the Dalmation coast, Mostar, and Dubrovnik were just a few of the many highlights."

This was a very interesting tour that was only slightly marred by hordes of other tourists. There were a variety of interesting stops along the way and most of the local tour guides did a good job of explaining things. Tina was a great leader, keeping us on schedule and giving us a good overall explanation of the area. She is a real asset to the Rick Steve's organization. This was our first RS tour and will likely not be our last.

Absolutely wonderful introduction to Slovenia and Croatia! Every hour was filled with discoveries and adventures. We especially liked the local contact- lunch with the winemaker, visiting the daycare center, honey tasting, homemade grappa/brandy, visiting with people who want to share their stories and feelings even about distant and recent wars. The pace was varied and well thought out, with time for adventure and time for rest. The places we stayed were all unique treasures.

The tour was wonderful. The tour itinerary was extremely interesting and our guide Tina made the areas and cultures that we visited come alive. This is a jam packed trip with some compact time frames. Everything we saw was exciting and added value to the tour. A couple of good meals, but many were just okay. I know food is not the highlight of the trip. I feel I learned alot about the culture of each country. The story of war in Bosnia does not really correspond with what I have previously read relating to religious beliefs. I left confused.

Anja was a wonderful tour guide. She was knowledgeable and personable. The group was great. I felt that some "timing" could have been a bit better. This is my second tour and I understand that things can move quickly. That being said I felt that we consistently got to our hotel "later" after a long day and then barely had enough time (around 30 minutes) to get to our room and then meet back for an orientation to the area.

"I loved seeing all the parts of Croatia. I loved Motovun, although we didn't spend enough time there. I valued greatly the experience of Bosnia as well. I loved Boris, the winery in Isteria, experience. The food, wine and story was great. Being in Hvar and Korcula was wonderful as well."

It was kind of amazing for a tour of 14 days and really added to the trip in a new way for me. I've been on 5-6 tours and never came home actually missing the company of other tour members. I'd like to see these people again!"

This was my 10th R.S. tour. For me this was more of a history/culture tour. Even though we had some fantastic food during the tour...most of the time the food was unremarkable. The hotels were not the typical charming quaint inns that we usually enjoy on R.S. tours. I wonder if perhaps those types of places are not as common in these countries (Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia). However, that was not the focus of this trip...at least for me.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing so many buildings bombed and/or covered with bullet holes in Bosnia was sobering. However, while touring an Orthodox Serbian church in this country we happened to show up during a wedding. Being able to experience the joy of the wedding party and being able to share a toast (via the bottle of Slivovica that was being passed around) was uplifting. The human spirit these people have is incredible! What a good lesson for us all!"

Some real pluses but also some issues. Guides were all knowledgeable, locations were generally quite interesting and hotels were ok. Bus driver was amazing. Food, however was a real issue. We are vegetarian and I cannot recommend this tour to other vegetarians and must strongly advise against it for any vegans. Healthy veggie friendly food was locally available but provided meals were all invariably very dairy rich. Tour was very educational but crowds often exceeded my comfort level.

Overall I thought the tour was excellent. Having a Bosnian guide who lived through the siege of Sarajevo who knew a ton about the history of the Balkans really made the difference. I joined this tour not knowing much about each country and came back feeling educated and wanting to learn more. The tour started off at a slow-pace, which was great since I was still adjusting time zones. I enjoyed almost every stop we had in Croatia, except for maybe Opatija. I felt our stop there was way too long and I ended up sitting at a cafe for almost 2 hours waiting to get on the bus again. There just wasn't much to do there. Bosnia and Slovenia were a thumbs up!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Stolac, Bosnia with our local tour guide...I believe his name was Aido(sp?). His personal stories from the war is my favorite thing to share with friends at home. It was eye-opening on so many levels, especially since I knew nothing about the war before this trip."

This trip was hands down one of the best travel experiences I have ever had. This region offers so much to a traveler looking to experience a culture full of a rich but yet complicated history. This tour offers incredible scenery; mountain terrain, island hopping, eye opening history lessons from the past and the most welcoming and warmest people that I've come across in all of my travel experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So much heart and beauty but also gut wrenching emotion this tour literally has it all. I was truly astounded by the resilience of not only our guide Amir Telibecirovic but also the local guides that we had through Bosnia. They all shared with us their own personal experiences of having lived through a senseless and brutal war but yet they all still have so much hope for humanity that one can't help but feel moved by it especially considering what they all had witnessed and been through."

Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as the complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. Most tour members will arrange to fly into Ljubljana (or into Zagreb with a train link to Ljubljana) and out of Dubrovnik ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Ljubljana's airport, Jože Pučnik (LJU), is about 14 miles from the city center. Most major airlines serve Ljubljana, but you can also look into Adria Airways, EasyJet, and Wizz Air for alternate one-way jaunts. Your travel agent can help you find what works best for you.

There is also daily rail service to Ljubljana from Munich, Vienna, Venice, Budapest, and Zagreb; details can be found on the Slovenian railway's site.

To return home after the tour, you'll find that many flights out of Dubrovnik require a connection through Zagreb.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Slovenia before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves Croatia & Slovenia guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation, try out a few words of Slovenian (although many locals speak English well), and get over your jet lag with fresh air and exercise.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Ljubljana that we will not be doing as a group (see guidebook for details): Plečnik House Museum, Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, Contemporary History Museum, antique-browsing at the riverside flea market, day-trip to Škocjan Caves.

If you are staying after the tour, consider arranging a day trip to Montenegro. See the Rick Steves Croatia & Slovenia guidebook for more information.

Packing

If you are planning to take a dip in the Adriatic Sea, pack along a swimsuit and a lightweight microfiber towel, and consider some good water shoes, as the Adriatic is home to prickly sea urchins. Also, be sure to bring sturdy footwear for the hike through Plitvice National Park.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
