Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 3 p.m. this afternoon to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk and Underground/Tube orientation, followed by a traditional Sunday roast dinner together. Sleep in London (6 nights). Walking: light.

Day 2: Westminster Abbey and The Churchill War Rooms

Today we’ll tour the majestic Westminster Abbey, where England’s kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066. A thousand years of English history lie within its stained-glass splendor and under its stone slabs. After lunch, we’ll visit the Churchill War Rooms, where we’ll get the inside story on the London Blitz and Britain’s leadership during WWII on our guided tour. The rest of your afternoon is free for the Imperial War Museum, shopping around Covent Garden, or other sightseeing. This would be a perfect evening for the theater (book something in advance from the Colonies or pick up a ticket in London). Walking: moderate.

Day 3: The Tower and British Museum

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a peek at the legendary Crown Jewels. After lunch, we'll hop aboard a boat and cruise the Thames past monuments, skyscrapers, and cathedrals on our way to tour the British Museum and the chronicle of Western Civilization—the Elgin marbles, Rosetta Stone, mummies and more. We’ll finish the day together with a quintessential English experience, afternoon tea. This is another good night for the theater. Boat: ½ hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: St. Paul's Cathedral and London's East End

Today we’ll head to the culturally diverse East End of London, where we‘ll find our lunch on a food tour. The tour will guide us through the history of the East End, tasting the influence of cultures along the way—from a traditional English bacon butty, to Indian curries and Jewish beef brisket. Once we have had our fill, we’ll continue onto England’s National church — Christopher Wren's majestically domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of WWII. Your evening is free for the theater or consider staying near St. Paul’s to hear the evensong. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at local pub and share the stories of your day’s experience. Train: 2 hrs. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Whitehall and the National Gallery

This morning we’ll begin with a guided tour of the National Gallery’s masterpieces, including works by Leonardo, Botteicelli, Turner and the Impressionists. Then it’s on to a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall, from Big Ben and the Westminster Houses of Parliament to the Renaissance-inspired Banqueting House, punctuated by the smartly-dressed, stony-faced Horse Guards. Before meeting for our “last supper,” we’ll admire the city and raise a toast to new friends aboard the London Eye. Cheers! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train or bus from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

I really enjoyed it, fast and furious, and a good activity with my 20-something sons. Well organized, thoughtful destinations. I didn't have time to "prep," and I didn't really need to, since the itinerary was figured out for us. Also nice that they worked around holiday closings seamlessly.

"I've never been to London, but I've seen photos of Big Ben and houses of Parliament all my life. Very wow to see them up close. And then more distant views, eg from the London Eye, as well. I really enjoyed the walk down Whitehall and happening upon the changing of the guard across the street from the Banquet Hall. Beef eaters at Tower of London pretty cool too. and the Lewis chess pieces in the British Museum"

Seven days in London is too short! I would have liked more time at The Tower of London and Windsor Castle, and free time seemed to disappear as we made our way through London from one location to another. Once I became familiar with the location of our hotel, I realized how convenient it was to other areas I wanted to visit. We were fortunate that the sun gods smiled upon us - the weather was predominately dry!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"After eating lunch at a pub in Windsor, I wandered to the end of the street and casually looked to my left, not realizing that I was standing on the Long Walk until my gaze settled on the castle. I had read that it was the best view of Windsor Castle, which is an understatement. It was an amazing sight!"

I've always thought Rick Steves' tours had a perfect blend of group and independent activities, and this tour was no exception. The people on the tour were a delight and our tour guide, Tom's supplementary dialogue during our walks was especially valuable for putting history in to perspective. It was a treat to be able to avoid queues for some popular sites and get in early at the Tower of London. East London food tour was also a great substitute for the Nat'l Gallery.

"There were so many it's hard to choose one! I think the most fascinating part of the tour was realizing how much of the US's history is connected with British history."

As per my previous experience with Heart of Italy, the London in 7 Days tour was an excellent balance of scheduled activities and free time. Our guide was fantastic. We saw what I believe we're top highlights of London. I was initially disappointed that National Gallery was removed from our itinerary, but it was replaced with East London Food Tour, which turned out to be really excellent. I recommend that the food tour remain a permanent part of the London 7 days tour.

Our mother/daughter vacation was an adventure with memories we will cherish for years. I loved the great mix of group activities and plenty of time for personal interests on our own. We were so well prepared for the use of the underground by our guide that we felt comfortable exploring all over London on our own after the day's group activities. I really appreciated the personality of our guide, especially his sense of humor and his depth of knowledge and pride in his country.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The ride on the London Eye was a fitting last night activity after we had toured so many of the landmarks during the days of the tour and could now identify them from the air. The food tour was unlike anything I had ever experienced and I definitely recommend that you continue to include it in the tour, even though it was an addition just before this tour started."

REALLY ENJOYED THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE AND OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE FEEL AND VIBE OF LONDON. JUST WISHED WE HAD MORE TIME AT SOME OF THE SITES, BUT THE TOUR IS DESIGNED TO GET YOUR FEET WET AND COME BACK FOR MORE, LONDON IS A BIG CITY!! THE ONLY DISAPPOINTMENT WAS THE START, WE WERE ANTICIPATING THAT ROAST BEEF DINNER WITH PUDDING, A NICE BRITISH BEER AND WE HAD NEITHER? DIDNT UNDERSTAND OUR FIRST DINNER, THAT WAS A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT BUT AFTERWARDS EVERYTHING WENT GREAT FROM THERE.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"THE LONDON EYE; THE TIMING AND EVENING SUNSET COOPERATED, TURNING INTO A PERFECT WAY TO END THE TOUR. THE VIEW AND OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT ON THE CITY AND ALL WHAT WE DID WAS A GREAT MOMENT. DINNER AFTERWARDS WAS ALSO LOTS OF FUN. THE WINE, FOOD AND COMPANY WAS FANTASTIC."

Our Rick Steves London Tour in a word, Perfect. We loved everything, our hotel (My Hotel Chelsea), The itinerary, the sights, the food, our tour group! The best of all was our wonderful Tour Guide Tom!! He is the Best! He is an amazing historian and story teller. Tom is a wonderful guide enabling our group to tour the city of London, by subways, trains, boats and buses while be entertained us by his lovely historical perspective, making it interesting and fun. We had the best time!

The visit to London was wonderful and we had a terrific tour guide in Tom. The pace was very brisk and enabled us to pack a lot in during the week. The variety of activities was also fun, ranging from museum tours, to a walking historical food tour, tea at the British museum, cruising down the Thames, and riding the train to Windsor. Tom showed us how easy it is to use public transportation and we felt confident to venture out on our own during free time. It was a great experience!

The expert organization of the tour became evident during the very first moments of meeting with the entire group and our guide Tom. The importance of the "buddy" system didn't appear significant until we ventured out on our first excursion. The leadership of our guide and the buddy system created a close bond between group members and maintained a safe and efficient means for our various sightseeing ventures.

"One huge surprise was our evolving competence in using the mass transit system and in our guide's ability to impart this skill to the entire group while keeping us together. My background in art, music, history, and literature allowed me many overwhelmingly, joyful moments at Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's, the British Museum, the British Library, and the National Gallery. The river ride along the Thames and the train ride and visit to Windsor Castle and Eton were highlights too."

Like many this was our first Rick Steves tour. We chose the 7 Day London tour so we would be able to stay in one hotel for the entire trip and maximize the actual "sight seeing" experience. We weren't disappointed. London is a fantastic city. Once we adjusted to the Tube and bus, getting around was very easy. The hotel was within walking distance of several sights not covered on the tour so free time was easy to fill.

The tour was everything I was hoping it would be and more. The hotel we stayed in, the meals the group shared and an itinerary that included my most wanted-to-see sites made this long anticipated trip worth the wait. The small tour group size allowed us to get to know each other and made for a relaxed atmosphere.

"I don't know that I'd be able to choose just one "wow" moment. Tea at the British Museum, the Churchill War Rooms, the river cruise, Westminster Abbey, Windsor Castle and St Paul' Cathedral were all wonderful experiences. The East End food tour was an unexpected treat. It took us to a part of the city I don't think I would have found on my own. I think when we were at the Tower of London, though, was my "oh my gosh - I'm really in London" moment for this history fanatic."

Action-packed tour, with a terrific guide (Tom) Highlight for me was his guided tour of the British Museum and interpretation of several interesting paintings. I don't have an art history background, and it was just fascinating! We learned to use the Underground, and had several excellent experiences (Churchill Rooms, Buckingham Palace, etc. Our group was comprised of mostly adults in our age group (60+), and all compatible. Hotel was much better than expected!

This is our second Rick Steves' tour and I thought nothing could be as good as our first tour of Italy one year ago. I was wrong. This was an equally great experience, both because of how the tour was set-up with free time and group time, and because of the quality of our primary tour guide. Tom was just fabulous. Knowledgeable, quick witted, free spirited...just wonderful. Where do you find these guys?

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many surprises -- for example, I didn't expect to enjoy the British Library as much as I did. But the highlight for me was probably the "restaurant crawl" tour of the East End. The guide, Nicole, was entertaining, and the food was great. It was such a fun way to learn the history of that part of London -- and with frequent opportunities to sit down (and eat!), my feet didn't notice how much walking we actually did. A close second was the National Gallery -- thanks to Tom!"

The tour was excellent but the three best things about were 1) Tom, 2) Tom, and 3) Tom. This trip would not have been as great as it was without Tom as our guide. The man is amazing and made everything about the trip so satisfying, comfortable and informative. His knowledge-base alone is phenomenal. His understanding of everything British, especially art, was truly special. And his jovial personality was perfect - he made everyone feel comfortable.

This was my first ever trip outside of the US, and this tour made me feel so comfortable traveling. I have never done a tour group before this trip, and now I want to do more. I'm glad to have gotten the opportunity to see so many things on this trip, I know if I had tried to do the trip without a group I wouldn't have seen half of the things I did get to see. I feel empowered to come back to London and explore on my own, and that is exactly the spirit of Rick Steves.

Tom was very good at placing many of the sites we visited into historical perspective, especially many of the war memorials. This reminded me how close to both World Wars London was and the devistating impact they had on that city. At one WW1 site he even recited "In Flanders Field" bringing tears to many eyes. Beyond that, Tom brought a bredth and depth of knowledge to each tour location that helped me understand how this city became so important thorough out history.

This was our second Rick Steves so we had great expectations because we enjoyed the trip to Belgium and the Netherlands so much. The trip did not disappoint. We visited, both with the tour and on our own, everything on our list of must see places. We received an invaluable introduction to the London Underground from our tour guide and as always the guide book was a great tool to have.

A perfect balance between group activities and free time; tour covered many of the most important sights, including Windsor Castle and village; enjoyed lunch at the Counting House, but not an exhausting pace. The [INVALID]ion of restaurants was first-rate, every meal great. Visit to Tower of London before opening hours was a great way to beat the crowds and get photos without hordes of people in them; enjoyed the Thames River Cruise. Great Eye was great, especially having our own private gondola.

Jeanie was excellent. Her lectures at each major site were very professionally done, and in between our times with her, she informed us of the range of possibilities for our free time. She was efficient, kept us moving at a good clip, and was able to smooth out unexpected interruptions due to other tour group congestion and traffic. Her flexibility and good cheer were exceeded only by her patience with our group and the delays we occasionally caused.

Our London tour was a fabulous re-introduction to a city we first visited on our own using Rick's England book in 1999. Joining 22 tour mates, we stepped into an exciting, modern metropolis teeming with eye-popping architecture, good food and London residents from around the world. Together, we saw traditional sights of royal/historical London-Windsor in a way that went beyond the tired cliches. Elated to see East End London, reinventing itself as a cultural driver of art, fashion and food.

This was my first trip abroad!! The format of the tour was a guided path of discovery! The activities of the planned activities provided a scaffold. So the tourers (is that a word?) could later recall or try to or ask our knowledgeable and accommodating guide for additional information about venturing out on their own.He taught us!! For example, our guide showed us how to use the tube. Owing to that, I took the tube alone to return to the National Gallery where I wanted to spend more time.

I really loved our tour guide, Tom. He was fun, friendly, SUPER knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. He was a total pro. Having the benefit of Tom's knowledge made things much more interesting and also easier, even when we were going to go on our own. Having been to London before, I knew how to get about on the Tube and would have preferred to meet the group at the destination rather than waiting around and entering the Tube all at the same time.

What a great experience! This was our first tour ever and, wow, I'm sure we will schedule another one. Our guide, Tom, was extremely knowledgeable and gave us not only facts about the sights we visited, but also provided interesting stories about each. Gillian was a fantastic tour guide. Our group was friendly and we were a good match. We got to see everything we wanted in London, which is a very big city and obviously it is hard to see everything. It was important that we got instructed on how to use the Tube, as that helped for times when we were not with our tour guide. This survey includes the comments of Fran Derry. There is no longer a "back door" to London. The city is eating itself alive because of the influx of tourists, business visitors and foreign real-estate purchasers. London is a fabulous place to visit but we recommend this tour offering be deleted in its entirety as it provides minimum value and enjoyment for money. Leave it to do-it-yourself travellers who can then congratulate or blame themselves for their experiences.

"These, unfortunately, occurred on our own private time, not tour time. Seeing London as a member of one commercial tour group among countless others is akin to participating in a knockout roller derby or an NHL hockey match. Sorry this is so late. The trip was amazing! Lots of interesting history and anecdotes from Gillian made it that much more enjoyable. Great job explaining/teaching the "tube" and lots of chances for side trips. London itself was stunning! Example: a single museum (FREE!?!) a couple of blocks from the hotel could well have kept us engaged for days,... and it wasn't even part of the formal trip/outline. A wonderful experience. Well planned, not only with regard to all that we saw, but also in giving us a "feel" for London and its people, places, and history. Also, the tour method is excellent; a LOT of walking, but that gave us a much better and more intimate and informal view than if we had been on a bus every day, and the relatively small group allowed us to always be close to all that was happening and to get to know one another. Robert, our guide, was excellent (more below).

My previous experience in London was 25 years ago, and I certainly noticed changes. Where did all the people with British accents go? We did not meet them at our hotel or even in the restaurants. It was a good itinerary, although two days in a row of "strenuous walking" at the start of the tour was exhausting. The WOW moments were impromptu: - Walking down Pall Mall and seeing the Horse Guards and the Guards practice their routes (much better than the changing of the Guards). - While riding a bus to dinner, having a Londoner pop her head up from her phone and her work to and announce that the Queen visited Kensington Palace that day to visit the baby."

The city, the guide, and the travel companions were exceptional. The daily agenda and the excursions left me with a real sense of the London experience. I really didn't do a lot of planning for this trip, so I was extremely grateful for the planned agenda and side trips that Tom took us on ,and also for his insightfulness.

"This was my first trip to London so going to all the incredible sites was unbelievable. Also going to the head of the line at all the attractions and having a very knowledgeable (and humorous) guide made for a truly memorable experience."

Eighth trip to Europe (seasoned travelers), and this trip fulfilled our high expectations in every way. Itinerary was demanding but reasonable. Food and hotel were excellent. Group interaction was very positive.

"We stayed for Evensong at Windsor Castle. Thought we would be sitting in the nave. Was incredible to site as a knight of the Garter. Forty-five minutes of bliss."

Overall I had a great time. Having taken other RS tours, I found that once again, there was a nice mixture of scheduled activities as well as free time for personal choices. I appreciated the guided tours to the well known sites in London, with time to visit those not included on my own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would have to say my favorite site was the Churchill War Rooms, however my "wow" moment was when I realized how comfortable I was navigating the Tube throughout London on my own. I live in a small city with no public transportation so was quite proud of myself at this accomplishment!"

Very enjoyable. Learned lots and I loved London. I suspect part of the reason was that areas of possible frustration were anticipated by our very competent leader. I felt like I was taking a tour of the "real" London, although we certainly saw the top spots. This was our first tour experience and I felt like we did not waste as much time as we usually do figuring things out. It was a very interesting and fun week.

"This is difficult to narrow down to a favorite, but it would be the opening ceremony at the Tower of London. Certainly the Tower itself is a don't miss, but the mood was set with the ceremony. I appreciated that we could tour the Tower at our own pace, too. I also really enjoyed the serendipitous moment on the mall when we saw the horse guards rehearsing for V-E day. (I apparently like the way the English do pomp.)"

Well-organized with just enough "down time". Group needs were effectively accomplished by our expert tour guide. Group size was perfect! Hit all the highlights and left us wanting to explore more on our own. Used the St. Paul's audio tour when my back went out and I had to miss the tour [INVALID] made me still feel a part of the group even though I couldn't physically be there.

So very well organized. Right balance of structured and free time. Tom Hooper just outstanding!! I'd go on a trip with him anywhere. I hadn't been in London for 50 years, so it might as well have been my first time. Great way to ease into European travel. Felt like we got many highlights, which of course whetted appetite for more. Pub lunch meal was mediocre for me. On the other hand the Indian supper was great. London Eye was "meh", an awfully expensive 40 minutes.

"Do I have to say just one? How about the day trip to Windsor, Tower of London, and Westminster. Really, can't specify a favorite."

As usual, we saw so much more with a RSE tour than we would have on our own. Our guide, Tom Hooper, was delightful, knowledgeable, and full of humor. London was full of highlights. I was wearing a Fitbit and became the official logger of our footsteps. We totalled 98,000 steps, 42 miles, and 170 flights of stairs. It's a good thing we were all in relatively good shape.

Planning Tips

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about London: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Transportation

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your tour hotel, as well as contact information for your hotel in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

London is a major transportation hub, making additional travel before or after your tour quite easy. For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass. If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in London before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves London guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions for sightseeing in London that we will not do as a group: Houses of Parliament, Tate Galleries (British or Modern), Imperial War Museum, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Victoria and Albert Museum, Kew Gardens, day trips to Cambridge and Oxford.

Many tour members like to attend a play or a concert while in London (see the Rick Steves London guidebook for details on how to buy tickets). The guidebook will also have plenty of ideas for any extra time you may have. Your guide will be happy to help you with post-tour plans.
