Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 3 p.m. this afternoon to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk and Underground/Tube orientation, before stepping aboard our very own vintage double-decker bus for a panoramic tour of "The Old Smoke" (London). We'll finish the evening with a "Welcome to London" dinner together. Sleep in London (6 nights). Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Whitehall and Westminster

After a morning walk through Covent Garden, Leicester Square, and Piccadilly Circus, we'll enjoy a guided tour of the majestic Westminster Abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066. After lunch, we'll continue with a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall — from the Renaissance-inspired Banqueting House, past Downing Street, to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament — all punctuated by the smartly dressed, stony-faced Horse Guards. We'll finish our day together with a tour of the National Gallery's masterpieces, including works by Leonardo, Botticelli, Turner, and the Impressionists. The rest of your afternoon is free for the nearby Churchill War Rooms, the Houses of Parliament, or a Thames River cruise. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: The Tower and The City

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the medieval Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a close-up look at the UK's magnificent collection of Crown Jewels. After lunch, we'll continue on a walking tour of The City, the oldest part of London and today one of the world's key financial centers. We'll rest our feet while enjoying a quintessential English experience: afternoon tea, before you're set free to explore the treasure-packed British Museum. This evening is free and perfect for the theater (book a popular show in advance from the Colonies or pick up a ticket in London). Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: East London and St. Paul's

Today we'll venture out to the culturally diverse East End of London, where we'll find our lunch on a food tour. The tour will guide us through the history of the East End, tasting the influence of cultures along the way — from a traditional English bacon butty, to Indian curries and Jewish beef brisket. Once we have had our fill, we'll continue on to England's national church — Christopher Wren's majestically domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of World War II. Your evening is free — consider staying near St. Paul's to hear the evensong. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel, and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at local pub and share the stories of your day's experience. This is another good night for the theater. Train: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Borough Market and the South Bank

We'll begin our morning with a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the half-timbered and thatched-roofed replica of the original theater that was home to the playwright's productions in the late 1500s. Then we'll take a walking tour along the South Bank of the Thames. We'll see the Tower Bridge and Southwark Cathedral, and learn how this side of the river has evolved since Roman times. We'll end our tour at Borough Market, one of the oldest and largest food markets in London, with colorful produce and the wafting scents of grilled-cheese and duck-confit sandwiches. The afternoon is yours to enjoy lunch at the market, visit the Tate Modern, hop on a Thames River cruise, or take a ride on the London Eye. Tonight we'll meet for our "last supper" and raise a toast to London and new friends. Cheers! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Gillian was exceptional. I enjoyed her humor, and her knowledge. London is a spectacular city, and I feel that the tour does a good job introducing you to its charm. This was our third tour, and compared to the other two, this tour is packed full with activity. I would only say that I would have enjoyed more time at london tower, however, like others on the tour, you can choose to bypass some of the city portion and take more time at the tower. London at Christmas was a treat.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The fellow tour members were great. I always enjoy that about rick Steve's tours, and this was no exception. The food tour in the east end was definitely a highlight. Windsor castle also ranks up at the top for me. The scene outside the national gallery on Trafalgar square was a memorable moment also, as the rain had let up for the first time, I believe, on the tour and the sunset was nice."

The tour was a great introduction to London. We were able to see the highlights while enjoying the extra opportunities the holidays bring to London. Our guide, Gillian, was very friendly and accessible with great knowledge of London history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several "wow" moments. We really enjoyed the food tour on the East End and tasting lots of different items around Spitalfield Market. With a background in theatre history, I really enjoyed the tour of the Old Globe. Our guide, Stephanie, was fantastic. She brought the history to life!"

Enjoyed location of Hotel. Shepherd Market is close and full of a variety of restaurants to enjoy. Appreciated the selection of places that were included for our tour. Just the right sampling of what London is famous for, while inspiring me to return on my own to see more. After this tour I feel confident about being on my own there without a guide.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Believe it or not, because of the weather we had a bit of improvised bus tour. The result was a good old fashioned "see the Christmas lights" ride. Most of us on the tour were 60 years +/- and we were oohing and awing like little children. Very loverly!"

We thoroughly enjoyed London and Tom. Tom was wickedly funny, engaging, and articulate. The city is beautiful and seeing centuries of history was - I don't know the word for how I felt. I was in awe, informed, impressed...and at times wondered how did I not learn about this in school? Londoners were welcoming, funny, polite and surprisingly patient. And the food! Not a bad meal the entire week.

I have not had a teacher, and in my field there have been many, who was as passionately informative as Tom Hooper. His breadth of knowledge and his subtle yet effective leadership embody what I would seek in a person guiding a group through London, and I would imagine elsewhere since he is so widely traveled.

I had visited London 20 years ago and did not really enjoy the visit. However, after by the end of Day 2 on the tour I was in love with the city! Being there for the holidays was an added bonus. Our guide, Tom was delightful and so considerate of everyone. His humor, knowledge and organization make him THE man to see London with.

I had been to London several times and had seen the sights we would be visiting during this tour. However I had never seen them with a Rick Steves guide. Having been on 8 previous RS tours I knew our guide would be excellent. I was correct.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The double deck bus tour on the first night was supposed to be just a panoramic bus tour of London sights. However it turned into a Christmas Lights panoramic tour and it was great. And was one of the things I hoped to witness during the tour. Mission accomplished. Very Amazing as London does Christmas light very well."

Another great Rick Steves Tour! Tom, our guide, was wonderful! We walked a lot but the pace was reasonable with frequent resting stops as Tom shared his tremendous knowledge. Rick, you need a historical romance tour!!

This tour was very active and was a challenge for me as I knew it would be. Therefore I did pace myself and not participate in everything. Overall the tour was great. Westminster Abbey is fascinating, The Tower of London is amazing, Winsor Castle is awesome, and the Globe Theatre was fun. One of the events I skipped was the East End food tour. I heard some not so great reviews from the other tour members, so I wasn't sorry to have missed that.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I wouldn't call it a "wow" moment, but I really enjoyed the tour of the Globe Theatre. I took drama classes in high school (many decades ago...)and we studied the Globe in depth at that time. It was great to see an actual reproduction of it, which was constructed true to the workmanship of the day. I was impressed with the skill and efforts used to reproduce it Shakespearean style."

Learned a lot about the British people. They seem like they are all on a mission to go somewhere or do something. London is much bigger than expected which seems to have multiple downtown areas to shop and visit.Their history, to me,is about wars and the monarch, ie winning battles for the king or queen, ( with some Shakespeare thrown in ).If there is one thing I didn't like about London,it's the many weird shaped buildings constructed or being constructed next to or near historic buildings.

This was our first Rick Steves city tour. London has so much to offer and all the sites included on the tour were excellent! We also had a great time birding in Hyde Park and searching on foot for Ottolenghi - a restaurant in Belgravia well worth the search! We had fewer evening meals as a group and we missed having those opportunities to get to know our fellow travelers better.

The tour was outstanding. I thought Jeanie was fantastic. She was informative, helpful, and her Brit sense of humor made the tour fun. There was just the right mix of tour time and free time. There isn't much I would change.

This was our first trip to Europe and it couldn't have been better. The information that is sent with the tour information and what is on the website and forums are invaluable. We arrived a couple of days early and with all of the information we had in hand we were well prepared to make are way around London on our own and get over our jet lag. I had heard from several individuals that the Rick Steves tours were fabulous and well worth taking. So when I made up my mind to go to London and knowing that I would never consider driving over there (!), I decided to take the plunge and book a tour. I can now tell you that it was an incredible experience and it will not be my last tour. I liked the small group size and feel that the guide was top notch. Everything went so smoothly. I really couldn't have asked for a better experience.

It was an extremely fulfilling trip beginning with our knowledgeable and funny tour guide Jeanie. She made the group feel safe and comfortable in London all the while pointing out small tidbits of local info and color. The sites, museums, markets and eateries were all wonderful and there was enough free time for us to scout about individually to see more history, visit an ethnic restaurant or take in a show. The walking, tube stations and bus routes were all easily accessible from our hotel

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was our 4th RS tour and it was wonderful. We had an amazing group, a knowledgeable, personable guide and a well-rounded itinerary which covered an overview of major sites (Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, National Gallery, British Museum, Windsor Castle...), adequate free time and lessons on how to navigate London by the underground train (The Tube) or buses.

Dear Rick, This was our second London City Tour. The first tour was in 2011. Although we loved the Limetree, it was a bit tight, I am a big man., We loved the Washington-Mayfair. My husband and I were glad that we booked a Rick Steves tour of London during the busy summer months. We appreciated that we did not have to stand in line or find accomodations. We enjoyed the many places the tour took us including the food tour of East London and high tea. We also liked that we had time to explore London on our own after instruction on how to easily navigate the Tube.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We arrived at the tour hotel in Mayfair two nights before the actual tour began. We took the Rick Steves book's advice and spent our first two nights in Bath. My WOW moment was realizing the fantastic London location of the tour hotel. Crossing Green Park near dusk and coming up on Buckingham Palace and the statue of Queen Victoria confirmed to me that the tour was going to be a good one due to our location in Mayfair."

The tour guide, Tom, was outstanding. His knowledge and delivery was excellent. We enjoyed the walks and were particularly impressed with Tom's insights on some of the artwork in the National Gallery. The food at the group dinners was much better than the ones we had in Paris back in April (week of the 15th) 2016. The location of the hotel was excellent albeit a little pricey. It's a shame the tour didn't include a cruise on the Thames.

Though this tour is booked as a 7 day tour, it is really a five day tour. I thought the experiences were all rushed. There really wasn't enough time to let the experiences "sink in." If the events had really taken place in 7 days instead of 5 days it would have been more enjoyable and not as rushed.

My wife and I had a wonderful time on the London tour. Tom was the best tour guide we have had the pleasure to be led by. We loved his dry Cornish sense of humor and how he took very good care of each of us. We saw the sights listed in the itinerary without a hitch and learned how to travel on the Tube well enough that we could use it on our own without problems. Our fellow travelers were all fun to be with and all seemed to have the Rick Steves "style" of traveling.

This tour is carefully planned to take in many of the famous historic sites, museums, and interesting side trips that we would never have found on own. It was both fun and educational which is my favorite way to see a new country. We really did walk an average of 5-6 miles each day (one day was 7.2 miles!) but it was mostly level and on pavement. I was pleased to see almost everything on my personal "bucket list" of historic places described in the countless historic novels I enjoy reading.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is really a tough choice since every day had some memorable experience. However, the serendipity experience in St. Paul's Cathedral was at the end of the day when the church was closed for Evensong. At that time the usher invited us to sit with the choir in the quire mesericorde seats. Luckily, we were not asked to sing with the choir but the organ music and chant filled the nave and was truly electrifying. We did the same thing at the Salisbury Cathedral several days later."

"I loved the Tower of London, St. Paul's Westminster. I would have loved to have seen the exterior of Buckingham Palace. This was our second Rick Steves' tour, having previously done the Best of Italy 17 day tour two years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed the Best of London Tour even though this was strictly a city tour. Having Tom give his insights on the tour helped us immensely with planning additional days we were going to spend in London. Having been to London before, we tempered our expectations, but we were wrong. Tom brought London to life for us, A great week with a wonderful guide in a city that has it all. And we lucked out with nice traveling companions. A few people had minor mobility issues but they did fine. But, this is a strenuous tour, particularly the first few days. We are thinking about a future city tour, probably Rome. Nice to unpack and pack just once!

This was my very first trip to London, and I chose to go on a Rick Steve's tour at the urging of my parents, who thought I'd get more out of my trip if someone else was leading me instead of my trying to figure things out on my own. They were 100% right! Having an "insider's" tour of the best of the city is THE only way to go! So much to do, so little time, but our guide made sure we saw and experienced the most iconic places in London. We saw, we tasted, we smelled, we toured!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had several "wow" moments because I'd been dreaming about going to London for many, many years, so to see all these places inside and out was one big "wow." I guess if I had to choose one, it would be standing awestruck in the middle of Westminster Abbey and imagining all the historic events that have taken place there, along with all the kings, queens, world renowned poets, writers, etc. who had passed through its doors. And I was there... right where they stood! Wow!"

The London tour overall was wonderful. I had never been to London and I appreciated the use of the Tube by the tour guide for getting around. I ended up using it by myself during the tour and it allowed me to do a lot more on my free time. Tom is a fantastic guide! Not only is he very knowledgeable and articulate in presenting British history, he is very funny and charming. The Washington Mayfair hotel was very nice and a great location for sightseeing.

"I don't have a specific wow moment but, as always (this is my 4th RS tour), your tour guide brought the city and its history to life and I got so much more out of the visit to London than I would have on my own. Jeanie, our tour guide was excellent. She was very informative, friendly, helpful and considerate. Having audio for the tour was an excellent idea. It really helped in hearing her commentary in a busy city. No need to yell! She gave us a great overview of the city which greatly helped when we had time on our own to explore. In light of recent terror events, I felt very safe in London.

This was our 3rd RS Tour. All places/sights on the tour itinerary engaged us; hotel was very good; room not cramped;a great location, breakfast more than one could eat and hotel staff helpful. Felt very safe in spite of all the trauma that London had recently experienced. We fell in love with London! Jeanie was an amazing guide; she made us all feel very comfortable, independent and safe while exploring many of London's neighborhoods. We were able to master the Underground and the buses quickly which opened up the entire city to us during the evenings. Very capable and helpful staff. Very good directions on getting to and from hotel and airport. Kept to the scheduled itinery. Lovely airconditioned hotel rooms. Disappointed that the lobby and breakfast rooms were so hot. Breakfast choices were robust and the food and service was excellent. Westminster Abbey tour was too long with too much information for first time visitors. Could not have passed a test on that information. Windsor Castle tour, at our own pace, was just right.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The East End food tour and local guide was exceptional. Restaurants and food and drink as well as background information was wonderful. Keep this unique experience in the tour. First time on a mulit-day tour anywhere. The small size of our tour group (24?) gave us a chance to get to know the people we were touring with, and sure made keeping up with the tour guide more manageable. This tour was pretty rigorous as advertized. We walked about 8 miles one day and a total of about 42miles for the week, according to my fit bit. Although a good part of that was walked during our free time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to say. We saw so much that was wonderful. I probably mostly enjoyed our tour of the British Museum. Roy, our guide was very knowledgeable and showed us some of the highlights of the museum all in about an hour and a half. It was enough exposure to cause me to return on my own a couple days later. Throughout the tour I was wowed by the craftsmanship of buildings and belongings. Much finer than we would think possible many hundreds of years ago."

This was our third RS tour and we thought it was simply outstanding. Roy and Julia were wonderful, interesting and very helpful guides. We had planned to do this London visit on our own but are so thankful we decided to go with a RS tour. To visit and experience an overwhelming city like London, this tour was the perfect way to do it. Our guide was outstanding, not only in his knowledge and teaching skills, but also in his leadership which often was like herding cats. Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "wow" moment happened the very first day. After our initial meeting and a short neighborhood walk, we piled into a double decker bus for a city tour. As we drove over one of the major London bridges, there were lots of people of all ages and ethnicities, including many families, enjoying a beautiful day together in their city. In light of the recent horrific events in and around London, they were telling me and the world that this was their city, their home, and nothing would change that!"

Our taxi ride from Heathrow to the hotel was double what the driver quoted due to traffic snarls around a parade that was held near Piccadilly. Every thing improved immensely after that. The "whisperers" audio system were immensely valuable navigating public transportation with Roy. He kept us in touch with every turn very discreetly.. The system gave us lots of confidence to navigate in the commuter rush! Being in the same room for 6 nights definitely enhance the experience.

I thought it was well organized. A great set of amenities, a nice hotel, and a knowledgeable tour guide. In all the pratical senses, I would say this tour is good. However, I would say it caters to a specific clientele and demographic for it's design. Much of the group is already traveled, wealthy, and in their later years. This makes it hard sometimes to connect with them culturally. With that said, they are absolutely nice people and the tour itself is open to people of all exp.

As this was our fifth RS Tour we are pretty familiar with the RS Tour Experience. However this one was a bit different in that it was a City tour and we stayed at the same hotel for the entire week. Because we weren't spending any time in a tour bus together we didn't bond as a group like our previous tours. And because we were in a gigantic city we didn't run into other tour members in our free time, everyone just seemed to disappear. Our next RS tour will involve multiple locations.

6.5 out of 10. Inspite of pe-advising the office of a gluten intolerance I felt only a cursory effort was made to ensure my dining experience was equal to the rest of the group. The restaurant chosen for the first supper was poorly prepared with not enough provisions to allow patrons to choose their preferred dish. Raising your hand to compete for limited quantities of main dishes is not acceptable

Exceeded expectations in every way. The communication beforehand was clear, the accommodations were very nice (an elevator and fancy shower- didn't expect that!), the Tour Guide Robert did an excellent job of both showing the group how special London is and teaching independent travel skills. This was especially important for a solo traveler like myself who needed to get around for three days after the tour ended.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were many great moments but what stands out clearly was walking into the room in the British Museum with the Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal reliefs. At first I thought "nice...interesting.." but then Robert started explaining what I was seeing. By the time he was done I could hear the chariot wheels and feel the anguish of the lioness as she was dying. He is truly a gifted story teller."

Had a wonderful time. Our group was a great mix of people with varying travel experiences from different parts of the States and Canada. Our hotel was lovely, comfortable, and well-situated. The tour guide was great. I was worn out at the end of our tour but satisfied with my purchase. London has so much to see and do that we barely scratched the surface. This was a great tour to prepare you to come back and do the rest. I hope to come again and do just that. Highly recommended.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Windsor Castle is grand. Buy souvenirs there for best prices and unique items. Every shop inside is a bit different. Plan to spend some extra time in Windsor to explore and have an authentic pub meal. Westminster Abbey is not to be missed. Stay longer if you can to take it all in. St. Paul's Cathedral is great as well. Go to the top of the dome if you can handle the stairs and height. The Tower of London is fascinating. Go in every church you can, they are amazing."

We arrived in London on the day of the Manchester attack. That colored our whole experience, in that we were watching history and a country deal with this. The US is so much bigger that we can feel disconnected. Even as visitors we experienced some of the pain, sadness, and resilience of our host country. (We were in Borough Market one week before that event) We saw most of the historical highlights, and had time to explore more on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My husband and I both really enjoyed the East End/food tour. That was something that we would never have done on our own and it probably isn't on many 'big bus' tours. We got to taste some of the traditional and new foods of London. Again our guide shared the evolution of the neighborhood to make it more meaningful, which gave us a different perspective on immigration. Tasty too!!"

This was my first Rick Steves Tour. I was incredibly happy with our experience. I really felt like I got to experience London "hands on." One of the goals I had in going to London was to really experience the culture and the people and not just visit tourist destinations. Robert was a wealth of information and I would gladly join any tour he was leading.

We enjoyed the tour which covered a lot of the highlights of visiting London. The schedule could have been a bit more even (we had several very intense days and several much lighter days). I wish we had more meals together--- that would have been a great way to get to know everyone better as well as an opportunity to have Robert tell us more about the histories and sights we were to see. Inclusion of the Churchill War rooms would have been good, as many of us went on our own.

"The "foodie" tour was especially terrific. The only drawback was that this tour was on the second-to-last day of the tour so we didn't really have a chance to go back for "seconds." Second place was the Tower of London[INVALID] Robert got us in as a first tour group, so we had the attention of our Beefeater guide and a chance to see the crown jewels without anyone else around!"

This was our first Rick Steves tour. We were very impressed with the communications from the tour company in advance of the trip. Our hotel was nice and in a good location in London. It was too bad the station nearest the hotel was closed for repair, but it was a short walk to the next one. We enjoyed the many different aspects of the tour and the variation in activities each day. Our tour mates were very friendly and Robert was fantastic. We liked having some afternoons free to explore.

I was on a London tour 9 years ago and discovering that Tom would be the guide again was a plus. He is absolutely superb: he makes all members feel special - no favorites, his grasp of the history is massive - adding to, not just telling the obvious. I could wax on but succinctly - he is excellent. Enjoyed the new additions but I did miss the British Library, and why not Buckingham Palace? You give sufficient free time to explore, loved the Globe & food tour. Etc. Will return.

"Too many to count. Even though this was my 2nd London tour, I still am going to repeat it since there is so much to learn and discover. Wow's would include St. Paul's (never boring), Globe Theatre (fascinating), Tower, but I suspect my biggest wow was in my own little excursions of discovery. I do so love this city and never tire of turning the block and finding........ Silly, perhaps, but using audio vox(?) is terrific. You can hear what spoken rather than fighting the outside noises."

Although I have been to London on multiple business trips and a short vacation excursion, after doing the Rick Steves' tour I now know I had never really experienced it properly. The tour is very well done and London is awesome, as is England. It's beautiful, interesting, and yes the food is excellent (coming from a good food lover). The hotel location could not have been better. The guide, Tom, was a London and British history guru and a fabulous and funny human being. 5-stars!

Part of a great tour experience is the people on the tour. We recently finished the Paris and the Heart of France tour where the people on the tour bonded. This group was a bit different. This was our first RS tour that was limited to one city, London, and didn't have to live out of a suitcase. Tom was terrific! The whole package with the hotel, hotel location the group dinners were very upscale. The "group" bonding experience was not our previous RS tours. I contribute that to the fact there was so much to do an see in London that personal itineraries were a major focus for many that the reliance on the group mentality was not needed. We adapted and had a great time!

It was our first trip with a Rick Steves tour and the first trip to London and it went beyond my expectations. It was so well planned and not a moment was wasted. We got so much more out of this trip than if we had tried to plan it on our own. It was well worth every single penny. Having a oyster ticket for transportation plus Jeannie walking us through the three main modes of transportation gave us the confidence to venture out on our own during free time.

"I enjoyed every minute in London so it is difficult to chose one. I was amazed to see Windsor Castle. It is not only beautiful but also enormous! I was very young during World War II but it still left an everlasting impression on me, plus living in Missouri, Winston Churchill's visit to Westminster College in Fulton was important...so seeing the Underground War Rooms was also special. Since it was removed from the original itinerary, Jeannie was very helpful in seeing that we did get ther"

The experience was just ok - way too much aimless walking. The schedule for the week was changed because on the first day we were to take a double decker bus tour, but the London Marathon took all the buses. Wouldn't the tour guide have known this in advance? It seems like we did a lot of "time filling" because there was nothing else to do.

My wife and I have visited London many times over the years, including once during the Christmas holidays. This tour gave us the opportunity to repeat that memorable experience, but with the added benefit of getting into crowded sites more easily as part of a group. Guide Gillian masterfully navigated us through the city and dense holiday crowds. But those crowds made the visits to London's most famous landmarks less rewarding than in shoulder season.

"As on past Rick Steves tours we've taken, there's at least one "wow" moment every day. My favorite on this tour was a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Shakespeare's Globe, the faithfully re-created replica of the original Globe Theatre. Our theatre guide was delightful. Her enthusiasm for the venue was contagious as she regaled us with colorful stories from the era of the original theatre. A close second was the East End food tour, which introduced me to a part of London I've never visited."

My overall tour experience was fantastic! This is my second Rick Steves tour. My first tour was with Daniella in 2010 for the Europe in 17 days. It was also fantastic! I learn so much when I tour with a Rick Steves guide. I am an educator in the Lake Washington School District in Washington and I use my new-found knowledge when teaching my students. The British Museum was too crowded..... The National Gallery was also very crowded....

London is an overwhelmingly fascinating city. Toms vast knowlege of history, customs, art, and love of his native country made it all come to life. Tom Hooper's knowledge and humor really made the week exciting, monumental and fabulous. I had no interest in the authentic tea as I am lactose intolerant and stick out my tongue at carbs, so told Tom I would go instead to the British Library to see the Treasures of the British Library. Just one tube stop away from the Tea location. Everything else on the itinerary was a blast. Amusement parks do not amuse me and I despise Ferris Wheels yet I climbed aboard the London Eye. Loved it.

The tour and guide exceeded our expectations! We have never taken a guided tour before, preferring to make our own itinerary and learn the area ourselves. We have used RS Guidebooks for Ireland and Britain. We had contemplated London for 2 years, but I was overwhelmed with the size, where to visit, stay, etc. I was concerned I would loose valuable time just figuring out how to get from A to B. When a friend returned from a RS Tour in Spain with rave reviews, we decided to try this tour.

Wish there was a category between Good and Very Good. Loved the hotel and all the beautiful buildings and monuments Jeanie took us to. Dream come true kind of stuff. My only complaint was there were so many rushing people I was nearly lost several times. Jeanie is not tall and neither am I, so when there was a crowd with people darting in front of me, I got a little lost. I really enjoyed getting to see London but I chose badly I think with this tour. I have taken two Rick Steves tours before but I had a smaller budget this year and this was an affordable trip so I chose it but parts of it weren't my cup of tea. While for the most part we went to the "highpoints" of London, it was so rushed and the time allocated so skewed, that within each of those, we did not see or get time to see the the highlights of the museum's collections. England/London

Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about London: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotel

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for our tour hotel is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to the hotel.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

London is a major transportation hub, making additional travel before or after your tour quite easy. For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in London before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves London guidebook to get oriented. Ride the public transportation and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise.

Here are a few suggestions for sightseeing in London that we will not do as a group: British Library, London Eye, Thames River cruise, Churchill War Rooms, Houses of Parliament, Tate Galleries (British or Modern), Imperial War Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum.

Many tour members like to attend a play or a concert while in London (see your Rick Steves guidebook for details on how to buy tickets). The guidebook also has plenty of ideas for any extra time you may have. Your guide will be happy to help you with post-tour plans.

Packing

For advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
