Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 3 p.m. this afternoon to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk, before stepping aboard our very own vintage double-decker bus for a panoramic tour of "The Old Smoke" (London). We'll finish the evening with a "Welcome to London" dinner together. Sleep in London (6 nights). Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Westminster and Whitehall

After an Underground/Tube orientation, we'll wander through the City of Westminster. Our walk will take us past Buckingham Palace, punctuated by the smartly dressed, stony-faced Queen's Guard, and through St. James Park, a favorite for its resident pelicans, on our way to the majestic Westminster Abbey. We'll enjoy a guided tour of the abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066, and continue with a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall. After a busy morning, we'll rest our feet while enjoying that quintessentially English experience: afternoon tea. Then you'll be ready to explore the treasure-packed British Museum. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: The Tower, The City, and St. Paul's

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the medieval Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a close-up look at the UK's magnificent collection of Crown Jewels. This afternoon, we'll take a walking tour of The City, the oldest part of London and today one of the world's key financial centers. Then we'll continue on to England's national church — Christopher Wren's majestically domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of World War II. Your evening is free — consider staying near St. Paul's to hear the evensong. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: East London and the Churchill War Rooms

Today we'll venture out to the culturally diverse East End of London, where we'll find our lunch on a food tour. The tour will guide us through the history of the East End, tasting the influence of cultures along the way — from a traditional English bacon butty, to Indian curries and the beloved London takeway fish and chips. Once we have had our fill, we'll visit the Churchill War Rooms, where we'll get the inside story on the London Blitz and Britain's leadership during WWII. This evening is free and perfect for the theater (book a popular show in advance online or pick up a ticket in London). Walking strenuous.

Day 5: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel, and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at a local pub and share the stories of your day's experience. This is another good night for the theater. Train: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Borough Market and the South Bank

We'll begin our morning with a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the half-timbered and thatched-roofed replica of the original theater that was home to the playwright's productions in the late 1500s. Then we'll take a walking tour along the South Bank of the Thames. We'll see the Tower Bridge and Southwark Cathedral, and learn how this side of the river has evolved since Roman times. We'll end our tour at Borough Market, one of the oldest and largest food markets in London, with colorful produce and the wafting scents of grilled-cheese and duck-confit sandwiches. The afternoon is yours to enjoy lunch at the market, visit the Tate Modern, hop on a Thames River cruise, or take a ride on the London Eye. Tonight we'll meet for our "last supper" and raise a toast to London and new friends. Cheers! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

As always, from start to finish my experience with your tours is amazing. Your associates in Edmund are extremely kind and helpful. I received wonderful assistance every time I called with a question. As always, the guide was excellent. Jeanie's knowledge of everything London was very impressive. She is also incredible kind. The local guides were also amazing and that was no surprise. The location of the hotel was perfect and a lovely setting.

"I am having a difficult time selecting one wow moment on this tour. The double decker bus tour was lovely. I enjoyed being on the bus and it was a nice way to start our tour, even though due to Ride London we went on the bus tour on the second day. Seeing the sights, with Jeannie's impressive commentary, was fun and informative. The traditional double decker bus was charming and I am glad that I had the opportunity to ride on one."

I anticipated the tour to be excellent based on travelers' reviews and Rick Steves' books and programming, but this tour exceeded my already high expectations. The entire week was well planned. We walked and used public transportation to see a wide variety of London from must see sites such as Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, to less traveled neighborhoods and markets. The entire week moved at the perfect pace.

London provided great weather, masses of people, unusual events (protests, world cup events) and lots of traffic despite London's attempts to limit that. The tour took all of that into consideration to decrease or capitalize on happenings. Tom Hooper was the key to everything! Droll, energetic, knowledgeable, and upbeat from the beginning. You didn't dare be thin-skinned though he was never mean-spirited as many sarcastic people can become. He handled kids beautifully.

This was a excellent tour in all respects. It was very hot in London, a city not really prepared for it. So it was a bit of a challenge getting around by underground, train and public buses. But, given London traffic, it was the only way to get around. More importantly, getting to know the system allowed us to visit many sites. (We use what we learn on the Rick Steve's portion of our trip to prepare us for further independent travel.)

"By chance, the 100 year birthday of the RAF was being celebrated while we were there. It was great that our guide had the ability to alter our itinerary. My wow moment? Standing in front of Buckingham Palace with 75,000 Britons watching the RAF fly by. And seeing the Queen watching with us."

High marks all around to the Rick Steves' organization for putting together a great visit to London. For me, as a single traveler who has been to London before, it was the perfect opportunity to revisit favorite sites such as St. Paul's Cathedral and see new ones, such as the Globe Theatre. Jeanie was excellent in providing leadership with a calm demeanor. Our hotel, Washington Mayfair, was air conditioned and comfortable, and the breakfasts everyday got us off to a great start.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Churchill War Rooms. One of the guests on the tour had reserved a ticket for herself. I went with her, and they let both of us in through the priority line. I could have spent many more hours there. I would include this on the "must see" for future groups."

The overall experience is kind of a blur - but a happy blur! We covered a lot of ground each day, saw a variety of events and tourist "must sees" and availed ourselves of opportunities for activities that occurred during our stay. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable and downright fun. The tour mix of sights and activities seemed just right and I thought gave me a good taste of what London had to offer and set us up for what we would add the next week after the tour ended.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing with 70,000 British citizens outside Buckingham Palace, seeing the Queen and family come out to the balcony and then watching 100 RAF planes fly overhead. We felt truly lucky taking advantage of the once in a lifetime event and enjoyed chatting with our English friends around us on the lawn as we waited for the flyover. That our guide was able to change our itinerary so that we could add in this event and still see everything was priceless - we will never forget this afternoon."

Our tour guide was excellent, the hotel accommodations were very good. Low-light: The cost of a room was very high to come in the day before the tour started. There was an issue with the hotel not wanting to honor a written agreement to get the additional night for a certain rate and then stay in the room the rest of the week. They mumbled about a room upgrade but grudgingly didn't make us move the day the tour started. High-light: the food included in the tour was excellent every single time

Favorite "WOW" moment

I believe this tour was the best way to see a major city. With so much to do, it is great to have a local guide who easily led our group of 24. The addition of the 'whisper' devices was a treat and a must for us to hear our leader on busy streets and at sites. The itinerary truly cut across the interests of all: a historic museum, food opportunities, art, historic places, etc. We even participated in the RAF 100 anniversary and saw the Queen.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were in London on an amazing week: Wimbledon, England in the World Cup semi-finals, political protest, and the RAF 100th Anniversary. Bottom line: seeing the Royal Family at Buckingham."

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour in London. London is a vibrant and energetic city, full of history, culture, and natural beauty. We enjoyed learning how to navigate our way throughout the city by using public transportation, especially the underground tube system. This was a new experience for us, as we do not have this kind of service in our small town in Oregon. Each tour day was filled with exciting adventures and experiences that have enriched our understanding of Londoners

Tour was very good. Gillian was excellent with a tour group that was challenging. Things I would change would be to eliminate the afternoon tea and rethink the hotel. The good news [INVALID] we loved Robert, our tour guide. He was terrific [INVALID] thoughtful and very knowledgeable. But, the pace of the tour was more then strenuous, it was a killer. Too much was crammed into too few days. The tour definitely needs at least one more day. We walked 45 miles in six days and ended up exhausted! Our hotel was in Bloomsbury and we could have done more right in our neighborhood like the Dickens and Foundling Museums. I would skip Windsor and concentrate on London.

This was our first trip to London and we were blown away by the experience[INVALID]the hustle and bustle, the architecture, the history, the stylish people, the tourists from all over the world, the art, the plays, the music. There was more than we could absorb in the 12 days we were there, 7 of which were with Robert and the lovely people of our tour. We followed this tour with the 10 day tour of Scotland and were delighted to learn that Robert was, once again, our guide!

This was actually my 4th time in London and my 3rd RS Tour, but I knew after taking other RS tours that I wanted to do London the RS way! This is a fantastic week. Lot of history, sights, food, and fun. A great balance of guided tours and free time to make your own discoveries. Gillian is just the best guide for which you could wish. The hotel had lots of character and the location was close to the Green Park Tube stop which joins several of the best Tube lines.

"1) Seeing Her Majesty the Queen leaving Windsor Castle for the Royal Ascot wearing BRIGHT yellow. 2) The East End food tour and Borough Market. So many choices. 3) Seeing Stephen Hawking's burial site in Westminster Abbey. 4) The Sky Garden on the roof of the Walkie Talkie building. 5) Being in a pub when England won their World Cup match. 6) St Paul's Cathedral tour (been many times but the RS local guide was amazing). 7) Hanging out with Gillian."

We enjoyed the itinerary very much, the walking activity guide was spot on; strenuous meant strenuous. Consequently we ducked out early on some afternoon galleries or museums because we were tired. I'm not sure how that can be helped given opening hours that are beyond our control. We were very grateful that though it was a tour, there was plenty of freedom to feel like we could go on our own if we desired. Transportation was a dream!! We love the underground!

It was a special family event--a 50th birthday and a 25th wedding anniversary & all things considered it went very well. Lots of food stops with 3 teens!! Hotel was great, very convenient, rooms quite nice, breakfast very nice. Friendly staff especially in the dining room. Days itinerary well planned. Oyster cards well used. Another great experience on a Steves tour (my 6th I think)

"visit to Windsor on Ladies Day at Ascot (who knew?) with the Queen in residence and who waved to us on her way out in her Rolls--it was just a coincidence that we happened to see a crowd gathered at the fence opposite her exit. Michael Jackson's Thriller was OUTSTANDING but that wasn't part of the tour. My favorite on the tour was the evensong at St Pauls. The Tower bridge was awesome as were the crown jewels and the afternoon tea was wonderful"

Gillian was an outstanding tour guide. Our group was fun and each day's activities were appropriately planned. The Oyster cards for transportation were great to have for group travel and well as the days or afternoons or evenings we went out on our own. Gillian was helpful in planning individual adventures out away from the group. Her knowledge of the history of different areas of town was comprehensive. I loved the dichotomy of the old and new architecture throughout all the city.

Our London tour was splendid. Choices of locations and attention to detail were terrific. Jeanie Carmichael was a great guide, intelligent, well spoken and personable. I would, however, like to make 2 recommendations. First, I would ask that no political comments be made. Tour director Jeanie was outstanding. Knowledgeable, always on time, funny, entertaining. The additional tour leaders were also outstanding. Skip the underwhelming opening ceremony of the tower. The British Museum deserves much more time and not at the end of the day when everyone is tired. First thing in the morning and then free time until lunch. Skip the financial district...nothing truly noteworthy here. The Windsor audio tour is very shallow. Too much free time and shopping.

I do not believe there could be a better, more suitable experience than what my husband and I had with this RSE Tour of London in 7 days. My husband had never traveled overseas, and my experience was decades in the past. What made London really feel like home for 7 days was actually a "who" - Jeanie and her brilliant guide service. She made the whole thing perfect for us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As our group was following Jeanie through the park she remarked on the additional police officers and that something must be afoot. Sure enough, we were suddenly in a perfect spot to see a regiment of Rifles practice their parade route, complete with marching band and mounted officers. Unplanned and spontaneous, my husband and I got to help a granny get her 4 year old close enough to see the horses. What a delight, for the little boy...and the nearest horse who found the youngster fascinating!"

We enjoyed our trip and the tour guide. We were all over the town by tube, bus, taxi, and by foot. We were oriented to what was close to us for food and entertainment and when we were out we had great direction and options. I think Rick's tours not only get you to the well known spots, they get you to many spots you probably wouldn't find on your own, and they are some of the more interesting places on the tour. All in all, well done.

Amazed from the start. Our guide was witty, funny, and most of all knowledgeable. He showed compassion, and kept the group on point, yet never failed to help and acknowledge each individual. To those looking at this tour: be aware that there are NO SLOW DOWNS. This is INTENSE walking for the sedentary person. "Too many to count--but perhaps the rainy stop by the small, innocuous looking "St. Giles in the Field" which had been so pivotal in the time of the Bubonic Plague. Standing there, in the gentle London rain, I felt at one with history, part of a larger story that I could not see, only feel deeply. Without time stresses, she managed to herd us efficiently and get us VERY knowledgeable about how to get around and see and learn all we could! She is a veritable encyclopedia of British and London history and probably could be the director of the museums she took us to!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Windsor Castle three days before THE wedding. To see how the "locals" were already there, camping out to see the Royals, and to be able to actually see the chapel that was in early stages of getting ready for the "do"! The museums, especially the British Museum were a super highlight as well."

Had another great Rick Steves experience on the Best of London Tour. Jeanie was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and a fun person to be around. Even with the Royal wedding that Saturday, we were able to get into everything originally planned. Even though we had a pretty full schedule, we had more than adequate free time for additional sightseeing, a couple nights at the theater, etc. Our hotel, Washington Mayfair, was very nice and convenient to everything.

"London is a great city to visit because of all of its history but I think because of the Royal Wedding, our visit to St George's Church on Wednesday was special because as I watched the wedding 3 days later, something I would have had little interest in before, it was amazing to think our tour group was standing literally right where the Harry, Meghan, Prince Charles and Queen were during the wedding."

This was my first tour with Rick Steves. It far exceeded my expectations. The pace of the tour was outstanding. The modifications in the event schedule (due to the Royal Wedding) were done in a seamless manner.

"The "regular" sites were wonderful and outstanding. However, I also appreciated the food tour, especially the history and appreciation for the cultural changes in the area. We fell in love with London on this trip, due in no small part to our excellent tour guide, Jeanie. Our hotel was great, the venues and restaurants we visited were very well explained, and our free time was adequate and well placed during the week. Fellow travelers were so friendly and like minded, and the group was a great size.

Great tour. I've been to London a few times, but I finally feel like I know it after this tour. No complaints at all about the activities - every one was enjoyable, and we used the daily suggestions to determine what to do with our free time. We can't wait to visit London again.

London was fantastic! The tour more than met our expectations. Every day was an adventure. The planning was impeccable. Our hotel was excellent and in the best location. "There are too many moments to single just one other above the others but the back entrance early Beefeater kickoff to our morning at the Tower of London (complete with a timely raising of Tower Bridge for a cruise ship tossed in for special effect) and the trip to Windsor Castle and St George's church the week before the most recent royal wedding were at the top of the long list of "wow" moments."

This was my 4th RS tour - Best of Europe in 2016, Paris and the Heart of France 2017 and Best of England 2018, just prior to this tour. On all of my previous trips I did not have any trouble keeping up with the group even though I walk with a stick. On this tour it was an issue. The idea of not having bespoke transportation was genius. It forced us out of our comfort zone ("All we have to do is get on the bus at the correct time") and confronted us with living in the reality of London as Londoners do. At the same time, we were empowered by our newly-learned ability to manage transportation on our own. Robert's explanation of the tube system was key to our understanding and being comfortable there.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several. The rhythm of activities and tours was great. Culinary tour of Spitalfields area contrasted with British Museum; high tea with National Gallery: we experienced and absorbed in equal measure. And of course, it was fun to have gone to Windsor before the royal wedding so we recognized places. The excursion to the south bank and Globe theater provided such a contrast to the other side of the river. Free time was enough and well-spaced."

I love the relatively rural setting (compared to London). Gillian was exceptional. I enjoyed her humor, and her knowledge. London is a spectacular city, and I feel that the tour does a good job introducing you to its charm. Learned a lot about the British people. They seem like they are all on a mission to go somewhere or do something. London is much bigger than expected which seems to have multiple downtown areas to shop and visit.Their history, to me,is about wars and the monarch, ie winning battles for the king or queen, ( with some Shakespeare thrown in ).If there is one thing I didn't like about London,it's the many weird shaped buildings constructed or being constructed next to or near historic buildings.

We had a very cohesive group that got along great. The balance of free time and guided time was excellent but I think this tour should be the best of London in 100 days and that would still not be enough. I left wanting more which is the sign of a fantastic trip I think.

The guide Jeannie shared so much knowledge with us that we were able to really enjoy and get the most out of each place we visited. Her warmth and sense of humor were wonderful and we had a great time. You can see so much when you go with a guide who can help point out what to look for and why it's important.Jeannie is a gem.For years I had imagined being in London, so this was the realization of a dream I'd had from childhood.

"Went to "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Globe on our own, not a dry period piece but a fast paced comedy that had the packed house laughing throughout. I suddenly realized we were having as much fun as Shakespeare's audiences must have had. Also enjoyed The Mousetrap, food tour, waterfowl in St. James park, the double decker bus, afternoon tea, Tower, Windsor, horse guards, war memorial and mosaics at St. Paul's, Imperial War Museum, pub Ye Grapes near hotel with stuffed bird decorations."

"It's hard to choose one. There were many. Every day was full to the brim. I loved the Globe Theatre. The guide there was fantastic. She was a great storyteller with a real dramatic flair (she was an actor there). At times, it felt like we were in Shakespeare's time, waiting for the play to begin. i loved the food tour. We finally took our first Rick Steves' tour. Now we know why these tours are loved by so many. TOM! We took the "Best of London in 7 Days" tour. The itinerary convinced us but Tom made it outstanding. His knowledge is incredible but he managed to share that knowledge in an entertaining way. The personal radios we were used were great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The way Tom guided us through Green Park underground station was like a mother duck leading her ducklings. One line was closed and he had to take us to a different line and then there was a problem with that line and he then went another way. I had no idea where we were but he got us there like it was just a normal part of the tour. We made it to the Tower of London in plenty of time for the "Opening of the Gate" ceremony and saw the Crown Jewels before the crowds got there."

It was an extremely fulfilling trip beginning with our knowledgeable and funny tour guide Jeanie. She made the group feel safe and comfortable in London all the while pointing out small tidbits of local info and color. The sites, museums, markets and eateries were all wonderful and there was enough free time for us to scout about individually to see more history, visit an ethnic restaurant or take in a show. The walking, tube stations and bus routes were all easily accessible from our hotel

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was our 4th RS tour and it was wonderful. We had an amazing group, a knowledgeable, personable guide and a well-rounded itinerary which covered an overview of major sites (Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, National Gallery, British Museum, Windsor Castle...), adequate free time and lessons on how to navigate London by the underground train (The Tube) or buses.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"London is a city with so many historical sites, cultural experiences and architectural and artistic treasures. We never lacked for exceptional activities to do with the group. And our free time allowed us to explore things of interest to us that were not covered or to spend more time in an area already covered. Dear Rick, This was our second London City Tour. The first tour was in 2011. Although we loved the Limetree, it was a bit tight, I am a big man., We loved the Washington-Mayfair. It may the trip a true joy. My wife and I have deliberated over some suggestions. First although we loved seeing the East end. We were not that crazy about the food. It was a wonderful experience and one I will treasure the rest of my life. Fellow tour takers were easy to talk to and kept an eye on me, as the cobblestones, bricks and stairs were very hard on my lnees. You warned us about distances involved but didn't say much about all the stairs. It would be nice if you would offer "senior" tours tailored to people like me. At 70, I don't consider myself "old", but my knees were telling me a different story! Days 2 & 3 were pretty hard to get through.

London was not what I imagined. It was so much more. The weather was great. The sights were amazing. Seven days is not enough time to soak it all in. The tour was everything I expected and more. There is so much to see in London and we saw a lot. Very well paced and informative. Our tour guide Gillian was amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable and funny. She ran us all over the city and I wanted more. There was enough free time to go off on our own and see things that couldn't be covered by the tour. You could make the tour a month long and still not see everything in London but I feel we saw so much. So highly recommended.

My wife and I had a wonderful time on the London tour. Tom was the best tour guide we have had the pleasure to be led by. We loved his dry Cornish sense of humor and how he took very good care of each of us. We saw the sights listed in the itinerary without a hitch and learned how to travel on the Tube well enough that we could use it on our own without problems. Our fellow travelers were all fun to be with and all seemed to have the Rick Steves "style" of traveling.

Though this tour is booked as a 7 day tour, it is really a five day tour. I thought the experiences were all rushed. There really wasn't enough time to let the experiences "sink in." This was my very first trip to London, and I chose to go on a Rick Steve's tour at the urging of my parents, who thought I'd get more out of my trip if someone else was leading me instead of my trying to figure things out on my own. They were 100% right! Having an "insider's" tour of the best of the city is THE only way to go! So much to do, so little time, but our guide made sure we saw and experienced the most iconic places in London. We saw, we tasted, we smelled, we toured!

"I had several "wow" moments because I'd been dreaming about going to London for many, many years, so to see all these places inside and out was one big "wow." I guess if I had to choose one, it would be standing awestruck in the middle of Westminster Abbey and imagining all the historic events that have taken place there, along with all the kings, queens, world renowned poets, writers, etc. who had passed through its doors. And I was there... right where they stood! Wow!"

My husband and I were glad that we booked a Rick Steves tour of London during the busy summer months. We appreciated that we did not have to stand in line or find accomodations. The tour guide, Tom, was outstanding. His knowledge and delivery was excellent. This tour is carefully planned to take in many of the famous historic sites, museums, and interesting side trips that we would never have found on own. It was both fun and educational which is my favorite way to see a new country. We really did walk an average of 5-6 miles each day (one day was 7.2 miles!) but it was mostly level and on pavement. I was pleased to see almost everything on my personal "bucket list" of historic places described in the countless historic novels I enjoy reading.

However, the serendipity experience in St. Paul's Cathedral was at the end of the day when the church was closed for Evensong. At that time the usher invited us to sit with the choir in the quire mesericorde seats. Luckily, we were not asked to sing with the choir but the organ music and chant filled the nave and was truly electrifying. We did the same thing at the Salisbury Cathedral several days later."

To visit and experience an overwhelming city like London, this tour was the perfect way to do it. First time on a mulit-day tour anywhere. The small size of our tour group (24?) gave us a chance to get to know the people we were touring with, and sure made keeping up with the tour guide more manageable.
