Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 3 p.m. to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk before stepping aboard our very own vintage double-decker bus for a panoramic tour of "The Old Smoke" (London). We'll finish the evening with a "Welcome to London" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs.

Day 2: Westminster and Whitehall

After an Underground/Tube orientation, we'll wander through the City of Westminster. Our walk will take us past Buckingham Palace — punctuated by the smartly dressed, stony-faced Queen's Guard — and through St. James Park, a favorite for its resident pelicans, on our way to the majestic Westminster Abbey. We'll enjoy a guided tour of the abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066, and continue with a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall. After lunch, we'll visit the Churchill War Rooms, where we'll get the inside story on the London Blitz and Britain's leadership during World War II.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 3: The Tower and The City

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the medieval Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a close-up look at the UK's magnificent collection of crown jewels. This afternoon, we'll take a walking tour of The City, the oldest part of London and today one of the world's key financial centers. Then we'll rest our feet and enjoy that quintessentially English experience — afternoon tea — before we explore the treasure-packed British Museum. This evening is free and perfect for the theater (book a popular show in advance online or pick up a ticket in London).

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 4: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel, and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at a local pub and share the stories of your day's experience. This is another good night for the theater.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 2 hours.

Day 5: East London and St. Paul's

Today we'll venture out to the culturally diverse East End of London, where we'll find our lunch on a food tour. The tour will guide us through the history of the East End, tasting the influence of cultures along the way — from a traditional English bacon butty to Indian curries to the beloved London takeaway, fish and chips. Once we've had our fill, we'll continue on to England's national church — Christopher Wren's majestically domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of World War II. Your evening is free — consider staying near St. Paul's to hear evensong.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 6: Borough Market and the South Bank

We'll begin our morning with a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the half-timbered and thatched-roofed replica of the original theater that was home to the playwright's productions in the late 1500s. Then we'll take a walking tour along the South Bank of the Thames. We'll see the Tower Bridge and Southwark Cathedral, and learn how this side of the river has evolved since Roman times. We'll end our tour at Borough Market, one of the oldest and largest food markets in London, with colorful produce and the wafting scents of grilled-cheese and duck-confit sandwiches. The afternoon is yours to enjoy lunch at the market, visit the Tate Modern, hop on a Thames River cruise, or take a ride on the London Eye. Tonight, we'll meet for our "last supper" and raise a toast to London and new friends. Cheers!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Jeanie was a first-rate guide; her knowledge of both traditional London history coupled with "insider" facts and anecdotes helped create an engaging, thought-provoking interaction that allowed each day to be both adventurous and meaningful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Without doubt, an easy tie: having already visited many of London's famous sites and museums about six years ago, I richly enjoyed the traditional British afternoon tea time and our touring of the New Old Globe. An honest confession: I teach AP literature and am a huge Shakespeare fan (Yes, I've read and watched all 37 plays!) Nevertheless, the Globe tour was crisply, intelligently presented."

The Best of London in 7 Days Tour exceeded my every expectation. The assortment of experiences gave this first-time overseas traveler a thirst to return to London as soon as I can. I appreciated the balance between group activities and free time, to pursue individual interests and form friendships with other tour participants. The hotel location was very convenient. Another fabulous RS tour that totally lived up to its reputation The tour had the perfect formula for success, great European destination ( excuse me.. LONDON !!), clean hotel in trendy area near public transportation, a robust itinerary of food, museums, history, and culture led by a delightfully caring, witty and savvy Blue-Badge Guide ( thank you Gillian you were fantastic). Gillian skillfully ensured an amazing and memorable experience was had by all.

Pauls Cathedral, and a series of bridges whose pastel lights create breathtaking and shimmering reflections in the River Thames that bedazzle the eye and nourish the soul. The perfect romantic evening was complete, by continuing along the south bank of the Thames, with a final lap across the iconic Tower Bridge. Magical !"

Everything about our trip ran like clockwork and was very easy. The tour was very easy to sign up for and the information we received was very good and easy to follow. The trip was educational, delicious, and a delight. We were able to see most of what we were hoping to, and now have a list of things we'd like to go back to see on another trip.

"My wow moment from the tour came from our walking in the City of London. The architectural contrasts were really impressive and not something I'd ever thought about before. Gillian spoke about how Paris may be more unified in architectural style and may be perceived as more beautiful, but London has this wonderful eclectic mix of styles, from sections of Roman walls, ruins, and modern buildings all right next to each other."

This tour is an excellent way to experience many facets of London in a short period of time. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and fun. The group excursions and local guides were well-timed and interesting. I like that we had a variety of tours - history, art, culture, food, music - so each day was different. The holiday lights & attractions made this a terrific time to visit. Our group members embraced the "No Grumps" attitude. So glad we did this tour, at this time, with the group we met!

It was a great introduction to the city and its history, and it struck a good balance between group activities and time on our own. We got to know the Tube really well, so it was easy to get places during free afternoons and on the days we stayed in London after the tour ended. I came to realize that we had barely scratched the surface of a few of London's neighborhoods and sights, but it was enough so that I know I want to return to London.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Churchill War Rooms, hands down. The rooms and furnishings themselves were fascinating, and the videotaped interviews of people who had lived and worked in those rooms for years gave the site a startling authenticity. By the time I left there, I felt I had lived through part of WWII myself in those rooms. It's hard to believe that these were the conditions under which Churchill and his advisers planned British war strategy. The rooms seem so primitive."

Wonderful experience. The tour closely matched the description. (exactly basically) Very well organized; appropriate activities. Good food and options. By far the best part and the glue that held the tour together was the guide Tom. Extremely knowledgeable, the perfect mix of valued and fun information without too much, kept the group together, on time and aware without nagging - and a fantastic (British) sense of humor. The guide went out of his way to value each member of the group.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many "wow" moments, but I especially enjoyed the East End Food Tour. It was a more hands-on, personal experience a little different from touring a church or museum. The London tour had an excellent mix of structure with free time with each of the areas. My favorite activities were: the bus tour, changing of the guard, Tower of London, St. Paul's, Windsor Castle, Globe theatre and Borough Market. It's amazing that we got to see so very many things in a week's time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"St Paul's was incredibly beautiful certainly with much detail. In my opinion, it will be the most beautiful church that I ever see. Going for Evensong was spiritual. 12 choir members filled the church with the most beautiful sound that I've ever heard. I was expecting to really enjoy this tour, but I absolutely LOVED it! I loved the knowledge of our guide Tom, who could answer any question, give an impromptu history lesson and inject humor throughout our travels. It should be known, that one needs to be in pretty good shape to do this particular tour. We walked 8-12 miles/day including uneven terrain, slopes, hills and countless steps. We saw all of the major sights, and surprisingly had fabulous food throughout London.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was completely "wowed" by Windsor Castle, especially the Chapel. The architecture, craftsmanship and history/age of the buildings is just mind-boggling. I also loved our morning Food Tour including the Bacon Sandwich. On one our free afternoons, we took a "Street Art Tour" and that was amazing. I would recommend that as a suggestion for free time. Many on our tour saw our pictures, and said that they would have liked to have done that."

This tour hit all the highlights of London while still allowing individual time to explore or relax. I would emphasize that this is indeed a strenuous tour with lots of walking, standing and stairs. Those that aren't in decent shape or have "bum knees" will definitely feel it. The thrill of being in London and the distraction of all that history (plus some ibuprofen) helps to manage the aches and pains. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Visiting the UK has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, and this experience was everything I hoped for and more. We were so fortunate to have Jeanie as a guide with her extensive knowledge, profound kindness, and delightful wit. One of the best things about London is that you can be in the middle of traffic and busy commuters, turn the corner, and all of a sudden, you're in a quiet churchyard or a serene park. It was my second Rick Steves tour--hopefully of many more to come!

"I enjoyed the entire week, but visiting Westminster Abbey was the highlight. To finally be in the presence of such incredible history and see so many eminent figures honored there was completely awe-inspiring. The beauty of Westminster Abbey struck me as well, especially the fan vaulted ceiling. I was flooded with so many emotions. On my own time, I also saw Hamilton as well as A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe. It was a dream come true to see such incredible theatre!"

Went beyond expectations

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We did a lot of extras (Buckingham Castle, Hamilton play, seeing Downton Abby movie, tea at Ritz that were all awesome) but I must say I was impressed we were able to enterTower of London early. Loved Windsor Castle Impressed we never wasted time in line."

I had always wanted to visit London and the tour far surpassed my expectations. My wife and I have already planned another trip next year to London. We plan on staying in London, then taking a cruise for 12 days around England, Ireland, and Scotland, and then another 3 days in London. Can't wait.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One evening we purchased tickets to a show. Along with the tickets included a dinner. We found the restaurant and sat down for dinner. An elderly couple sat next to us and for the next 90 minutes talked to us about being in London as children and experiencing the bombing of London in WWII. It was an experience that I will never forget as long as I live. Also the show we saw was COME FROM AWAY and it was unbelievable."

This was our first Rick Steves tour and were greatly impressed with the entire experience! Excellent attention to all details which made the trip easy and enjoyable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We attended a play on one of our evenings on our own. Feeling comfortable getting to the theater and back to our hotel( on our own!) and interacting with people along the way was fantastic! Plus theater in London is an incredible experience!"

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and December is a good time to visit London. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Summer has its advantages, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed). November and December offer fewer crowds and the festive fun of the holiday season.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's hotel is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your tour hotel in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of London's Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW) airports.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves London guidebook.
