Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 3 p.m. this afternoon to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk, before stepping aboard our very own vintage double-decker bus for a panoramic tour of "The Old Smoke" (London). We'll finish the evening with a "Welcome to London" dinner together. Sleep in London (6 nights). Walking: moderate.

Day 2: Westminster and Whitehall

After an Underground/Tube orientation, we'll wander through the City of Westminster. Our walk will take us past Buckingham Palace, punctuated by the smartly dressed, stony-faced Queen's Guard, and through St. James Park, a favorite for its resident pelicans, on our way to the majestic Westminster Abbey. We'll enjoy a guided tour of the abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066, and continue with a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall. After a busy morning, we'll rest our feet while enjoying that quintessentially English experience: afternoon tea. Then you'll be ready to explore the treasure-packed British Museum. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: The Tower, The City, and St. Paul's

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the medieval Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a close-up look at the UK's magnificent collection of Crown Jewels. This afternoon, we'll take a walking tour of The City, the oldest part of London and today one of the world's key financial centers. Then we'll continue on to England's national church — Christopher Wren's majestically domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of World War II. Your evening is free — consider staying near St. Paul's to hear the evensong. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: East London and the Churchill War Rooms

Today we'll venture out to the culturally diverse East End of London, where we'll find our lunch on a food tour. The tour will guide us through the history of the East End, tasting the influence of cultures along the way — from a traditional English bacon butty, to Indian curries and the beloved London takeaway fish and chips. Once we have had our fill, we'll visit the Churchill War Rooms, where we'll get the inside story on the London Blitz and Britain's leadership during World War II. This evening is free and perfect for the theater (book a popular show in advance online or pick up a ticket in London). Walking strenuous.

Day 5: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel, and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at a local pub and share the stories of your day's experience. This is another good night for the theater. Train: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Borough Market and the South Bank

We'll begin our morning with a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the half-timbered and thatched-roofed replica of the original theater that was home to the playwright's productions in the late 1500s. Then we'll take a walking tour along the South Bank of the Thames. We'll see the Tower Bridge and Southwark Cathedral, and learn how this side of the river has evolved since Roman times. We'll end our tour at Borough Market, one of the oldest and largest food markets in London, with colorful produce and the wafting scents of grilled-cheese and duck-confit sandwiches. The afternoon is yours to enjoy lunch at the market, visit the Tate Modern, hop on a Thames River cruise, or take a ride on the London Eye. Tonight we'll meet for our "last supper" and raise a toast to London and new friends. Cheers! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Jeannie Carmichael did an outstanding job of "herding cats". It can't be easy getting 26 people to pay attention to necessary details while keeping an ever pleasant demeanor. We loved the mix of organized time with plenty of free time to explore theatre, museums and palaces of our own choosing. I loved the nudging to gain comfort with the Tube an public buses. An important lesson for automobile dependent Americans

WE WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY LONDON, A CITY WE HAD AVOIDED IN A FEW PAST VISITS TO THE UK - WE WERE INTIMIDATED AND NOT SURE WHAT TO DO OR HOW TO NAVIGATE THE CITY. IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE THE TOUR ORGANIZED, EXPECIALLY FOR AN ACTIVE GROUP OF TOURISTS. LONDON'S JUXTAPOSITION OF HISTORICAL STRUCTURES AND NEW ARCHITECTURE, ALONG WITH THE CITY'S AND COUNTRY'S HISTORY IS INCREDIBLE. THE CITY IS VIBRANT AT NIGHT WITH LOTS TO DO – THEATERS AND CONCERTS. FREE TIME ALLOTED WAS JUST RIGHT.

"MY FAVORITE WOW MOMENT WAS VISITING WESTMINISTER ABBY AND SEEING THE CRYPTS OF VERY FAMOUS SCIENTISTS – IT GAVE ME SHIVERS (I'M A RETIRED SCIENTIST). ANOTHER WOW MOMENT, ALTHOUGH A BIT OF NEGATIVE, WAS SEEING THE ELGIN MARBLES IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM (I BELIEVE THEY NOW NEED TO BE REPATRIATED). A PLEASANT SURPRISE WAS STUMBLING UPON THE FEARLESS GIRL STATUE NEAR ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL."

We enjoyed our trip very much and the "local" insight Roy offered. We saw most of the must see sights and learned to find our way around London using the Underground which allowed us to stay a bit longer than the tour lasted to revisit our favorite sights and catch a few more plays. Our hotel could not have been situated any better and allowed us to walk to many important venues as well as catch the Underground.

This is our third RS tour. This tour was wonderful and everything we hoped for. We saw all the major sights in London and had some unexpected treats. There was a great mix of "tour time" and free time to explore on your own. The hotel, the Washington Mayfair, was excellent. Our tour guide, Roy, knew everything and did an amazing job of herding us cats on the tube, filling us with history, and helping us with our independent explorations. Thanks for a great week, Roy!

"My favorite days were the trip to Windsor Castle, a beautiful little village and the food tour of the East End! We got away from the hustle and crowds of downtown London and the big tourist sights. This was to be an introductory experience of London, a city on my bucket list. The tour exceeded my expectations. The hotel was well situated for ease of access to the city. I was especially appreciative of the generous Oyster (transit) card which encouraged independent explorations of the city. And of course our guide, Jeanie, was wonderful and made the trip informative and fun.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I especially appreciated the tour guide's adept handling of the snafu with Westminster Abby, open only one day of the week we were there (and, it winds up, not at all during the following week, so lucky us.) She rearranged the weeks schedule to accommodate this, got us there, assessed the very crowded situation and offered that we take a coffee break and let the initial flush of crowds thin out. Win-win! We were able to visit, visited when the crowd had waned, and got a coffee boost too!"

Like other Rich Steves tours I've been on, we learned how to find our way around using public transportation which gives one the confidence for return trips on one's own. We were very impressed with how the tour was set up. Plenty of structured time with so Much educational information about what was surrounding us. Also adequate enough downtime for us to do our own exploring. We really appreciated the suggestions by Jeanne on different activities we could do on our own. This was an excellent tour and met or exceeded all of our expectations. My comments are mostly on tour management which was excellent in my opinion. The tour itself was the first one of the 2019 year and it was the week before Easter, and also there were a number of protests in downtown London. Our guide dealt with these challenges which was no easy task. He always exhibited grace, good humor and provided good advice and effective leadership. My highest respect and compliments to Tom!

Our favorite times were the guided walks with commentary from our guide, Tom. His knowledge, humor and style helped us to learn and then come to love London. The tour was an excellent introduction to London and all things British. I especially appreciated the $ 50-BP transportation card we were given at our first meeting. It was good for all types of transportation including the Tube, Buses, and Trains. Made getting around London with the Tour and especially when I was on my own, which was at least half the time. The Best of London tour was our second with Rick Steves. We have decided that there is no better way to "learn a city and it's nuances" than with a well qualified guide. And, Rick Steve's tours has the best of the best in guides. We were well orientated to London (and the tube) by day 3 and confident enough to set out on our own when time allowed. The London Tour is ideal. You've included all the main sights - Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Windsor & St. George's Chapel, The National Gallery, The British Museum, The Globe, the Borough Market, Covent Garden, the food tour of the East End & afternoon tea, but also included plenty of time for us to see the other attractions on our own. I figured out, after the tour, that London is not really England. It is Washington DC and New York City combined with the look of Baltimore, MD. If you want history, especially of the royals, then this is for you. If you like loud crowds, then is is for you. If you want to only speak with people from France, India, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Germany, etc. then London is for you. If you want to meet actual English people and partake of a lot of English food then this is not it.

From the first encounter with the planning until the final night of the tour was a fabulous experience. I arrived in London with a broken foot and was worried that I may have trouble keeping up with the walking. I was able to enjoy the tour as the tour guide made sure that I was not left behind, letting me know which were the easiest ways of getting to different floors, safer routes etc. All of the people on the tour were great travel buddies. Following two weeks with Rick Steves tour of the Villages of South England, we continued to London for a one week Rick Steves. The tour had a good balance of experiences (history, culture, etc) and locations around London. There was also a good balance of group touring time vs free time. Having the guide teach us how to use the tube was invaluable, and helped us become more independent quickly. Loved the open air markets. Good suggestion to add on day on each end of the tour. We supplemented on our own with Churchill War Rooms & Museum, Buckingham Palace State Rooms tour, & Apsley House.

This was our 3rd Rick Steves Tour and as with our previous tours (Ireland and the Villages of Northern Italy) it was simply OUTSTANDING. Jeanie was absolutely wonderful. She managed to keep track of us all through multiple ventures via the tube even in crowded and hectic times. Her knowledge was extraordinary and her discussions included interesting anecdotes and her own interpretations and opinions which added insightful context to our tour. I would summarize her as a delightful,

This was our first Rick Steves Tour and it did not disappoint. I was very pleased the tour agenda and the tour guide, Jeanie, who was terrific. I love history and my wife loves art and the culture, so it had everything we were looking for. Gillian ran a tight ship, she knew her subject very well and was able to give us a knowledgeable and insightful experience, answering questions and making sure everyone was comfortable. This was my first 7 day city tour. I have taken 2 other longer tours with Rick Steves before. I was a bit dissatisfied with this type of tour. I understand that they want to pack as much activities and sites as possible in 7 days to get your money's worth but we were completely exhausted every single day. Our guide Gillian was exceptional, very knowledgeable and easy to get to know. She kept us on time and was good about making sure all were accounted for. We learned so very much, more than I or my husband and brother and sister-in-law could have ever gleaned if we had pursued this experience on our own. All in our tour were friendly and easy to get to know. I won't soon forget Susan, Liz, Elizabeth, and so many others. They all made our tour that much more fun. Really wonderful bunch.

A truly wonderful tour with another great tour leader. Jamie is the perfect combination of knowledge, humor, organization, and exuberance. London speaks for itself, of course, but with a tour leader such as he, you can't go wrong. My wife and I are in good physical condition but this is a very active tour. Participants should be made very aware of this fact. The bus tour of the local area is not necessary.. The Churchill War Rooms should be a part of the tour.

The worst part is the flight over. I made sure I got good seats with lots of leg room on every leg. Costs more, but worth it. The London transportation system is easy to use and to learn. Outstanding trip except for: 1) Add more guided tour time than free time; we can always skip out if we're too tired. 2) The guided time felt rushed which if slowed down slightly adding an extra hour, it would give us more time to take in and enjoy the sites. 3) The listening devices used on this tour were defective for many of us requiring us to be no more than 5 feet away from guides to be able to hear them. This was a different experience in that we stayed in one place and it was almost entirely an urban experience. This tour very much matched our expectations after being familiar with Rick Steves' show. Each night we were exhausted from all the walking, but we wouldn't have had it any other way. We enjoyed using the public transport and felt like experts by the end. Tom did a great job of making all the tour members feel like a cohesive group and we made some new friends on the trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The food tour was exceptional. I wish I could remember the name of the lady that showed us around. She was great (from South Africa). My other highlight was climbing St. Paul's. The tour guide downplayed it and so many people didn't do it. The stairs were a tough climb and I can see why she would caution people about it, but it was a highlight for me. My wife and I were the only ones from our group to go all the way to the top and I'm glad we did."

London provided great weather, masses of people, unusual events (protests, world cup events) and lots of traffic despite London's attempts to limit that. The tour took all of that into consideration to decrease or capitalize on happenings. Tom Hooper was the key to everything! Droll, energetic, knowledgeable, and upbeat from the beginning. You didn't dare be thin-skinned though he was never mean-spirited as many sarcastic people can become. He handled kids beautifully.

High marks all around to the Rick Steves' organization for putting together a great visit to London. For me, as a single traveler who has been to London before, it was the perfect opportunity to revisit favorite sites such as St. Paul's Cathedral and see new ones, such as the Globe Theatre. Jeanie was excellent in providing leadership with a calm demeanor. Our hotel, Washington Mayfair, was air conditioned and comfortable, and the breakfasts everyday got us off to a great start.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Churchill War Rooms. One of the guests on the tour had reserved a ticket for herself. I went with her, and they let both of us in through the priority line. I could have spent many more hours there. I would include this on the "must see" for future groups."

The overall experience is kind of a blur - but a happy blur! We covered a lot of ground each day, saw a variety of events and tourist "must sees" and availed ourselves of opportunities for activities that occurred during our stay. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable and downright fun. The tour mix of sights and activities seemed just right and I thought gave me a good taste of what London had to offer and set us up for what we would add the next week after the tour ended.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing with 70,000 British citizens outside Buckingham Palace, seeing the Queen and family come out to the balcony and then watching 100 RAF planes fly overhead. We felt truly lucky taking advantage of the once in a lifetime event and enjoyed chatting with our English friends around us on the lawn as we waited for the flyover. That our guide was able to change our itinerary so that we could add in this event and still see everything was priceless - we will never forget this afternoon."

Our tour guide was excellent, the hotel accommodations were very good. Low-light: The cost of a room was very high to come in the day before the tour started. There was an issue with the hotel not wanting to honor a written agreement to get the additional night for a certain rate and then stay in the room the rest of the week. They mumbled about a room upgrade but grudgingly didn't make us move the day the tour started. High-light: the food included in the tour was excellent every single time

This was a excellent tour in all respects. It was very hot in London, a city not really prepared for it. So it was a bit of a challenge getting around by underground, train and public buses. But, given London traffic, it was the only way to get around. More importantly, getting to know the system allowed us to visit many sites. (We use what we learn on the Rick Steve's portion of our trip to prepare us for further independent travel.)

I believe this tour was the best way to see a major city. With so much to do, it is great to have a local guide who easily led our group of 24. The addition of the 'whisper' devices was a treat and a must for us to hear our leader on busy streets and at sites. The itinerary truly cut across the interests of all: a historic museum, food opportunities, art, historic places, etc. We even participated in the RAF 100 anniversary and saw the Queen.

The good news [INVALID] we loved Robert, our tour guide. He was terrific [INVALID] thoughtful and very knowledgeable. But, the pace of the tour was more then strenuous, it was a killer. Too much was crammed into too few days. The tour definitely needs at least one more day. We walked 45 miles in six days and ended up exhausted! I do not believe there could be a better, more suitable experience than what my husband and I had with this RSE Tour of London in 7 days. My husband had never traveled overseas, and my experience was decades in the past. What made London really feel like home for 7 days was actually a "who" - Jeanie and her brilliant guide service. She made the whole thing perfect for us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As our group was following Jeanie through the park she remarked on the additional police officers and that something must be afoot. Sure enough, we were suddenly in a perfect spot to see a regiment of Rifles practice their parade route, complete with marching band and mounted officers. Unplanned and spontaneous, my husband and I got to help a granny get her 4 year old close enough to see the horses. What a delight, for the little boy...and the nearest horse who found the youngster fascinating!"

It was great, and I feel that we could return to London sometime and survive on our own. Jeanie is a good teacher.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many to count. I'm an English prof, so the Globe tour ranks high, even though we went there in 2014. We saw two plays at the globe and visited the Dickens museum on our own. I would have liked to return to the British Library (visited in 2014) but we ran out of time. Jeanie's tours of her favorite items in the British Museum and the National Gallery stand out. The food tour, Dover Castle, Westminster, St. Paul's."

Most days were busy and full of new experiences. We had a good group with good and helpful attitudes. We became tour partners as the days passed. There was so much variety and our guide was better informed than we expected.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every day in London was a "wow" moment. After viewing my pictures it is almost overwhelming at what there is to see and the historical references for every place we visited. Because the history of London eventually affected the history of America it was a relevant experience. Much better than a history class is what this tour became."

In Rome and Sicily I felt I got to see and know a good bit about the city and the island. London was so massive I did not get that feeling. Don't get me wrong, I had a good time and am glad I went. Jeanie was entertaining and informative.

We enjoyed our trip and the tour guide. We were all over the town by tube, bus, taxi, and by foot. We were oriented to what was close to us for food and entertainment and when we were out we had great direction and options. I think Rick's tours not only get you to the well known spots, they get you to many spots you probably wouldn't find on your own, and they are some of the more interesting places on the tour. All in all, well done.

"My tour wow is kind of corny, but fun. When I found our we were going to be doing much of our travel in London by the Tube I was pretty sure I was going to hate that. Well, as they say, go in with an open mind and sure enough after a few days we were jumping on and off that darn thing and I felt like a Londonier, if that's a word. We came in 3 days early for our tour and took a 1 day trip out to Stonehenge. What a fantastic site, if you have a chance try and visit. That was our other wow"

This was our first trip to London and I felt like we really covered a lot of territory. I came away with a new understanding of the British monarchy and also a deeper appreciation for the significance of WW1 and WW2 to Gr Britain The hotel location, breakfast, and room were all great-met or exceeded our expectations. Our group of 22 was very congenial, respectful of time and upbeat. We enjoyed getting to know everyone. We liked the mix of scheduled vs. free time, especially in the evening.

My husband and I went on this tour for our honeymoon. It was a surprise gift from our families. We honestly didn't know what to expect. What a wonderful experience! We loved learning about London from a certified guide and expert. Our guide Tom dazzled us with facts everywhere we went. He was personable and interesting. We wanted to take him everywhere. Our tour group was kind, adventurous, and a little mischievous. I loved knowing people in this new and strange city. Highly recommend this tour!

Every day of the trip was well planned, all the museums and monuments, food tours, walking tours, meals, free time, it was all great. Using public transportation and walking rather than being shuttled around by bus allowed us to feel the rush of the city and be a part of it. It was a great experience and a great way to find our way around during free time.

Loved going to all the sites especially time at the two markets we went to, plus pub experience and final dinner with everyone. We still had ample time to make evening plans for the Theater or shopping in the evenings

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wow moment was the walking tour of financial district and food tasting at Spitalfields Market in the East End. During the walking tour there was a massive electrical storm and lots of rain! Our tour guide knew all the places where we could stay dry as possible and still have our tour. It was quite the fun experience plus the food tasting at the market and tour of the ever changing East End was really really fun."

Amazed from the start. Our guide was witty, funny, and most of all knowledgeable. He showed compassion, and kept the group on point, yet never failed to help and acknowledge each individual. To those looking at this tour: be aware that there are NO SLOW DOWNS. This is INTENSE walking for the sedentary person. We had a great time, no problem keeping up, but this is not a tour for "relaxation". This is a tour for exploration! You'll be amazed at what you get to see and do in just a week.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many to count--but perhaps the rainy stop by the small, innocuous looking "St. Giles in the Field" which had been so pivotal in the time of the Bubonic Plague. Standing there, in the gentle London rain, I felt at one with history, part of a larger story that I could not see, only feel deeply. Another moment was listening to Tom explain art; I'd never realized such nuance in the classical paintings. It was a wonderful experience to watch as others gathered around to listen to his orations"

This was our first Rick Steves tour although we have travelled quite a bit over the years and I must say the experience exceeded our expectations! "It is so hard to pick a favorite - as every day there was a great moment to see or discover about London. we did enjoy starting off and ending the tour with dinner with the entire group and we loved seeing the city on the first day via the vintage double decker bus. we also enjoyed the food tour of east London and the incredible Borough Market!"

We had a wonderful tour experience. Tom was extremely professional and organized but had such a low-key manner and great sense of humor that we felt almost like a group of friends traveling together. We enjoyed the balance of activities provided. We visited important historic places, such as St. Paul's Cathedral, and ate our way through London's East End, experiencing its vibrant immigrant influences. Had we traveled on our own, we would have missed the East End fun.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It is hard to pick one "wow." All of Windsor Castle was spectacular. Since we had just seen Meagan and Harry get married, standing in St. George's Chapel three days later was special. The tour of St. Paul's Cathedral was also amazing. And the Beefeater ceremony at the Tower of London, at least for us, was a great alternative to waiting hours for the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace."

This was my first experience with a RS tour. I joined with no expectations except that someone would shepherd the group of us around. The weather was perfect for walking. The walking went fine, a lot of the standing was tiring but seats were frequently available. The tour experience was great; our guide Tom was terrific. The hotel location great - allowed for easy walking to many theater, shopping, tube, pubs and restaurants. Gluten-free meals were readily available.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Standing in the west end of the Nave of Westminster Abbey at the grave of the Unknown Warrior, and seeing at my feet a small tired bouquet tied with raw salvaged cotton ribbon. It struck me as odd and out of place. I did not know what I was looking at until later someone mentioned it was Meghan's bridal bouquet. A few days later as we walked past brides being photographed in lovely locations I saw similar bouquets."

I loved the tour and seeing London. We hit the highlights although I was sorry to miss seeing the Parliament, but Roy explained why that wasn't included in the tour. I was hoping to have time to go there on my own, but never had the chance. I liked that Roy was willing to give us free time, but we could stay with him and learn more from him about where we were if we wanted to. He did a great one hour presentation on art at the National Gallery- I wish he'd talked longer because we learned alot

"I didn't know anything about Windsor Castle, other than that's where the royal wedding was going to be so I was wowwed by the state apartments. We almost missed them because the line looked really long, but the long line was the one for the doll houses. I love fine china, and seeing the Queen's china collection was a highlight (and I bought a plate commemorating Queen Elizabeth as the longest reigning monarch as my main souvenir of the trip). Our tour guide turned us loose right after we arrived"

Although London was lovely the pace of the tour was not. Our guide would rush us through the tube often not checking to see if everyone was with him only to then tell us we have 45 min to get a coffee before we go in to the attraction. Once about five people couldn't get on the tube. They knew where to get off but had no idea where to walk. Our guide did not wait for them but just left the station and walked to the museum.

Roy did an amazing job keeping all of us engaged in the tour. It was a bit of a challenge keeping up with him and we did a lot of up and down! The other guides that helped us see and appreciate the sights and food did a wonderful job as well. There was time to rest and to do the additional activities I Wanted. The day I stayed over after the tour was well spent at the Victoria and Albert museum. This museum was well worth the trip and one I would recommend adding. Food there is great also.

From the minute we arrived in London it was an epic experience. Our tour guide Jeanie was charming and made us feel as though we were family in her city. The attention to detail was beyond any expectation we could have had in our tour. As Jeanie would say often; now let's carry on and we did just that. Had another great Rick Steves experience on the Best of London Tour. Jeanie was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable and a fun person to be around. Even with the Royal wedding that Saturday, we were able to get into everything originally planned. She is a veritable encyclopedia of British and London history and probably could be the director of the museums she took us to!!
