Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Scotland

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Edinburgh for a "Welcome to Scotland" get-together. We'll then take a neighborhood walk and tour of Georgian Edinburgh before getting acquainted over dinner. Sleep in Edinburgh (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Conquering Edinburgh

Today we'll wind our way through the medieval streets of Edinburgh's old town, seeing the best of the city on foot. Our walking tour will take us up the Royal Mile with its wealth of historic buildings, quaint shops, narrow lanes, and hidden courtyards, then onto Grassmarket and Greyfriars cemetery. This afternoon visit imposing Edinburgh Castle at your leisure and soak up the dramatic views from this military stronghold and birthplace of the city. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at a local pub to share the stories of your Scottish experiences. No bus. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Culross and St. Andrews

We cross the famous Firth of Forth this morning as we head into the Scottish countryside. Our first stop is in the picturesque burgh of Culross, where we'll learn about long-ago lifestyles as we tour a 17th-century "palace." Then we're off to St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university town and mecca for golfers worldwide. You'll have time to explore the ruins of St. Andrews' medieval cathedral, watch duffers playing the Old Course, and enjoy lunch. This evening we'll enjoy dinner together, and then listen to the history of bagpipes and a real Scottish piper. Sleep in or near the village of Kenmore (2 nights). Bus: 5 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 4: Crannogs and Whisky

This morning we'll tour a reconstruction of Scotland's unique crannogs: prehistoric, defensive homesteads built on piers out over the lochs. We'll also learn about the first people to farm in this part of the world, millennia ago. Then we'll head to the Hermitage, where we'll hear about Scottish Romanticism amidst Black Linn Falls and towering forest. Next, we are onto the charming town of Dunkeld, where we'll tour its medieval cathedral. After lunch, we're off to Aberfeldy, where we'll tour a whisky distillery and enjoy a wee dram while learning about this iconic Scottish industry. This evening you can relax riverside before dinner together. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Sheepdogs and the Highlands

We're off to the Highlands today! We'll start off by learning about the nitty-gritty of Scotland's wool industry at a working sheep farm and watch a demonstration by talented sheepdogs. After a quintessential Scottish lunch together, we'll tour evocative Culloden Battlefield, where, in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat ended decades of Scottish rebellion against the British government. We'll end the day of striking scenery with an orientation walk of Inverness where we'll sleep (2 nights). Bus: 3 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 6: Cruises and Castles

Today we'll explore the Highlands and enjoy a panoramic cruise of Loch Ness (monster sightings possible) before the boat drops us at the shore to explore the dramatic ruins of Urquhart Castle. This afternoon we'll enjoy tea at the turreted Cawdor Castle and stroll through its magnificent gardens. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to explore Inverness or stroll along the banks of the river before dinner together. Tonight is a great night to enjoy some traditional music in one of the many pubs. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: strenuous.

Day 7: Glencoe and Seaside Oban

This morning we'll head toward the coast, stopping at haunting Glencoe, site of Scotland's most infamous massacre (Campbells and MacDonalds, keep your daggers on the bus). We'll finish our day in the scenic coastal town of Oban, also known as the "Gateway to the Isles." This evening is yours to climb up to McCaigs' Tower, wander the quaint lanes and alleys, or simply relax over a pint while taking in the views of the harbor. Sleep in Oban (2 nights; group is split between two B&Bs). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: light.

Day 8: Inspiring Isle of Iona

Today we'll board a ferry and hop on a local bus for an entertaining ride across the island of Mull to our destination: the windswept Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. We'll visit the 800-year-old abbey, where monks created the remarkable Book of Kells, one of the sparks of creativity that pulled Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll then set you free to explore or find a spot to meditate on this tiny, spiritually charged island. We'll return to Oban, and our own century, in time for dinner. Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 9: Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle

We'll drive along the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond and through central Scotland on our way back to Edinburgh. En route we'll visit the famous castle of the Stuart kings, Stirling, including the newly restored Renaissance Palace. Tonight we'll share memories of Scotland and toast new friends at our final dinner together. Slàinte! Sleep in Edinburgh (1 night). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 10: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Edinburgh's airport and train station are easy connections from our neighborhood. Glasgow is one hour away by train; London is 90 minutes by air. For those tempted to continue their trip, Edinburgh is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

It was a great tour. A good mix of activity, history and education. The guide was very nice and we had a lot of fun.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The border collies were nice. Actually my wow moment was not associated with the tour. It was when I deviated from the schedule and went salmon fishing on the River Tay. A little more information from the guide about planned activities would have made this a little easier, but I worked it out."

Scotland is beautiful. We saw a lot, learned about the history of Scotland, and enjoyed good food along the way. On the down side, it seemed we spent a lot of time on the bus and Scotland has the most uncomfortable beds I've ever slept in.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to pick just one. Seeing the Highlands, riding the ski lift up the mountain, visiting Culloden Battlefield, and seeing the mist filling the valley over Loch Ness. Meeting Gilly the bagpiper and having her perform. She has such a joyful personality and I loved her story telling. I also enjoyed going to the bar in Inverness and hearing traditional Scottish music."

The tour was well organized and conducted. The activities were diverse and represented a spectrum of the country. The tour guide was excellent and went well out of her way to give us the flavor of Scotland. Bus driving was excellent with the drivers really being part of the team and experience. A big thumbs up on this one. My only concern is that it was too short. Would love to have seen Skye, Orkney and Shetlands in addition to what we did see.

"The bus drive through Glencoe area was other worldly. I wish we had more time there. Loved the chair lift ride up the mountain, and I wish we had more time to hike. I think I left my heart in the Highlands."

SPECTACULAR!! . The hotels were delightful and the meals were outstanding!! I loved trying different foods and I had salmon everyday I wanted it. The itinerary was perfect and we saw and learned soo much. The strenuous days were STRENUOUS but worth it. Helen was the perfect tour guide and was especially aware of my limitations. TRIP OF A LIFETIME!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The sheepdog demonstration!! I have seen several small demonstrations at Highland games, but this one was the REAL THING!! Hundreds of sheep, 15 + dogs (including puppies we got to hold) and actual hands-on sheep shearing after the dogs were whistle commanded to cull 1 specific sheep out of the herd. The owner was truly Scottish and was funny and most proud of his dogs. AMAZING DEMONSTRATION!!"

Helen is extremely knowledgeable of Scottish History and of the areas that we visited. She made the tour exciting and informative. Lots of info interspersed with humour. Helen added extras like whisky and dark chocolate at the top of Ben Nevin etc. Our drivers were very skilled through all types of road conditions and tight parking spaces. Friendly and efficient. I would have liked a bit more free time in Inverness and Oban but overall a great tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I particularly enjoyed the sheepdog demonstration. It was extremely impressive to see one man have control over 8 to 10 working dogs at one time. Having had sheep and working border collies myself made that even more amazing to me. It was pretty much WOW."

This was my first trip with Rick Steves Tours and I loved it. Helen, our guide, was so knowledgeable, fun and professional. The rest of the group was a joy to be around - no grumps! There were several surprises along the way that added to the excitement. I'm looking forward to booking another trip in the future.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The sheepdog demonstration was definitely a "wow" moment. But, thinking back on all the individuals we were introduced to during the trip, I was really wowed by them - the sight guides, the bag piper, the shepherd, the scone demonstrator, the shuttle bus driver, etc. They really were all outstanding and showed me the character of Scotland. I would not have received those experiences by traveling on my own."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"A few moments: 1) Visiting St Andrews "The Old Course". Putting on the practice green (for only 50 pence) as well as getting photographed on Swilken Bridge at the 18th hole. 2) Observing Neal and his trained boarder collie sheep dogs. Amazing how he can control 5-6 dogs with different whistle commands at the same time. Although he appears pretty gruff at first he and his wife do write children's books. We bought two for the grand kids and he signed them!"

This was the first organized tour for my husband and me. We have always planned out own travels. We were ready to have an all inclusive trip that still allowed us some freedom. The tour was very well organized. I was impressed with the accommodations and service. The bus was very comfortable and I was impressed with the amount of available space. The size of the group (28) was quite nice as it was possible to interact with nearly everyone. The group was a very pleasant group of people and traveling with them was quite enjoyable. The group meals were very good and were a nice demonstration of Scottish cuisine. I enjoyed the variation of tour stops. Very nice trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was really impressed with the sheep dog demonstration. It was quite interesting to watch the large group of dogs work the sheep (and my wife got to shear a sheep). It was quite impressive. Third times a charm visiting Scotland. I finally experienced a glimpse of the Scottish Highlands. What a beautiful view! I would like to go back and experience more of what the Highlands have to offer. I like the "no grumps/grouch" policy. Everyone is accountable for their happiness on the tour. I enjoyed the camaraderie and openness of the group. Everyone looked out for each other. Just a wonderful experience. This is my first tour with Rick Steves and it won't be my last.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "wow" moment was watching a 16 week old border collie puppy in training, the puppy had the temperament of an old sole. He sat perfectly still in the rain. The only movement he showed was his shivering body. The puppy ignored the adult dogs. He intently watched the shepherd. The shepherd uttered a command in Gaelic, the puppy came to life. He shot off out towards the sheep and single handily corralled the sheep into a tight ball. Only 16 weeks old! Amazing..."

Scotland is a country of great beauty and friendly people. It's fun to travel with a like minded and adventurous group. The rain can be a bit of a downer, so be prepared at all times for any weather...often within a 10 minute span. I enjoyed the Highlands and Islands the most overall. This was the first of the three tours we've been on where I often felt we didn't have enough time in certain places (St. Andrews and Iona particularly) and had too much time in others. Scotland is enchanting!

There were moments of this trip that were STELLAR, but overall this trip was far from my favorite. Part of the problem was the fact that it rained constantly, but we expected that in Scotland and were prepared for that. Personally, I felt that the itinerary on this trip was underdeveloped and our guide was weak.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My absolute favorite moment on the tour was the evening in the crannog at the Scottish Crannog Center in Kenmore. It was a fantastic tour! We had an amazing group of travelers and I enjoyed getting to know them. The tour was a good balance, with enough "on your own" time. I would have loved a few more days...although we did arrive 2 days early and included a meal in the Edinburgh Castle Great Hall (which was well done) and the Military Tattoo! FANTASTIC! Your tour was well organized and gave a great overview of Scotland. Needed more time in St. Andrews.

"By far, my favorite "wow" was Neil Ross and the Working Sheepdogs. Being a dog lover, I was excited the visit was included: it far outreached my expectations. I was amazed with the level of excellence of the dogs and totally entranced by Neil Ross. I would love to have a complete bio of all of his competitions, titles, and wins. Are his kids competing now? The tour guide, Martin, was very knowledgeable and helpful. He was very accommodating to our needs and even taking a few small side trips to visit alternate sites. Having two nights in most places allowed you to really take in the sights without feeling rushed. The one exception was St Andrew's where we only had 2 1/2 hours. We could have used at least 4-5 house there. The overall trip was pleasurable and the people on the tour were fun to be with.

This was our first Rick Steves tour and when we returned home we signed up for another for next year. Martin (our guide) was very enjoyable and filled us in very well as our tour progressed. Lodging gave us easy access to local sites and was quite comfortable. Breakfasts were excellent and dinners were varied and good. The division of time between group and personal time was appropriate for us, and my wife and I made good use of Martin's suggestions for things to see and do.

I loved our Scotland tour. Our guide, Nigel, was wonderful. He was knowledgeable and friendly. We had a lot of rain, but we were prepared so it didn't matter. The beauty of Scotland definitely made up for the rain.

"My "wow" moment was the sheep dog demonstration. We stopped at a sheep farm that had 3,000 sheep and 18 dogs. It was so incredible watching the dogs work the sheep with just a word or certain whistle from the owner. He also had puppies that we got to play with and snuggle. I loved it!"

The tour was great! First time on an escorted tour and we loved having all the hotels, transportation, planning, etc. taken care of for us. All the days were planned to maximize the experience and we enjoyed going to places we might not have considered and NOT driving.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Would probably be meeting Neil Ross and watching him work the sheep with his border collies and seeing the farm and puppies. Tied would be seeing Gillie the bagpiper and hearing her stories and listening to her play. These were both wonderful and would have been missed if we had not been on the tour."

Scotland in 10 days is a fabulous tour. Our guide James was perfect - he had a deep knowledge of historic Scotland, the geography and current issues facing Scotland. By the end the the tour just about everyone in our group of 28 had decided that James was the most interesting man in the world! Every day of the tour was fascinating.

"This is a tour has a WOW moment every day. The Scottish scenery and cities are filled with awesome views. You can feel the history. The day that strikes me the most is the day we took a boat ride on Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle a fascinating old destroyed castle and then an hour later touring Cawdor Castle where the family still lives and to know that both castles were occupied at the same time. Plus the Crannog center and Culloden Battlefield which were very moving."

Scotland is beautiful, but the real experience was having James as our guide. His knowledge and love of Scotland and his happy spirit made the trip very memorable. Scotland's history and it's future were explained and all questions were answered. The boat cruise on Loch Ness with the beauty of the lake and the castle were special. Sheep shearing and puppy cuddling even in the rain were an adventure. Magical Scotland...thank you RS!

Arrived in Edinburgh, the hotel was beautiful and the rooms were spacious. Met with the group and tour guide. Very happy we stayed 2 nights in hotels as opposed to one night and being on the move. Outstanding from every aspect. Anne, the tour leader, educated us and went out of her way to help solve problems for individuals. Within the short span of 10 days, we came to appreciate the history of Scotland - the battle between religions for royal rule, the impact of the country during the Enlightenment, and the dreaded Brexit. The group members connected well with each other. Mike, the bus driver, was personable and highly skilled. The weather never really slowed us down (missed gondola).

Great tour, although it takes second place to the Ireland tour we just completed before this tour, The hotels were fine, with the usual European shower issues. The food was excellent. Our tour guide, Ann, was fine and conducted the tour well, although not outstanding. Cathie Ryan ruined us on the Ireland tour.

"Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. I get why Rick doesn't go there, but I think you need to think about informing the tour members of the event, and providing information on how to go there. It is so awesome that I think the tour members need to know about it. When we told others on the tour we were going, they didn't know what it was I found the Commando Memorial to be very moving. The tour enriched our experience in Scotland tremendously. Every day had moments that made me excited, or intrigued, or moved that I never would have discovered on my own. I went to bed every night wondering what gems we would discover the following day. The food and lodging were often extremely good and the efficiency of group travel was noticeable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As we came upon Glencoe, Adele's dramatic theme from Skyfall blasting though the coach, my heart was in my throat. I thought it would be somber because of the massacre there but it was the opposite. When we got off of the bus, it was evident that Glencoe is more than just a beautiful place. There is a healing energy there that is palpable and ineffable. the key to the trip was colin our tour guide he was great in every way and made the trip not only interesting but loads of fun. he brought us together as a group who seemed to enjoy each other. the tour bus was outstanding along with the driver graham. i felt very safe on the bus. 3 of the 4 hotels were very good. the hotel in kenmore was in a great location but otherwise was lacking. i thought the trip in and of itself was one day too long especially towards the end.

I appreciated the authenticity of the various places we visited. I love history. Having the opportunity to stay in the oldest Scottish Inn, Kenmore Hotel, was a great experience. Loch Ness, Iona island, Sterling Castle, introduction to the Crannogs are all experiences that I will remember from this trip.

"The Old Course at St. Andrews. I spent my entire allotted time walking and observing the course. The chance to have my picture taken on Swilken Bridge is something special. In addition, we had a beer at "One of the best hangouts in the world of golf" as rated by The Golf Channel."

"There were a lot to choose from. The one that sticks in my mind is when we visited the reproduction crannog on Loch Tay. Sitting inside it and imagining their life was powerful. I'm from Scottish heritage and knew I was looking forward to seeing the country of my ancestors but never knew how totally grounded I would feel there. The tour was not hurried and every one of our hosts were there to make our stay personal. The drivers were all very good drivers and very personable. They cared about what WE wanted to see. Our tour guide was Colin Mair and he made each of us welcome in a very caring and personal way. I WILL RETURN!!

From the beginning to the end the tour was everything I had hoped for & so much more. Colin is a true professional, a wealth of knowledge, experience & Scottish charm. i also never want to go up against him in a trivia contest. I loved the history of the Crannogs, Glencoe, & all the rest. Our driver, Grant, was a great down to earth guy & I didn't have any worries on even the narrowest roads. Of all the hotels the Kenmore was my least favorite.

Our first five tours with Rick Steves were City Tours which we enjoyed immensely so we weren't sure how a longer bus based tour would compare. We will do more of these. Different, but a great experience because of the variety. The pace is actually faster but delivers a much more complete picture of the country.

This was our first tour with any company. It was a wonderful experience and we will definitely tour with Rick Steves again. The itinerary was great. The guide was outstanding. Scotland was so beautiful and exceeded all of my expectations. The one criticism I have is that there was far less time than I expected to explore on our own. The first full day had a big stretch of time on our own, but after that there was far less.

Overall, I enjoyed the tour tremendously. The food/restaurants were always excellent. The lodgings top notch. James was an excellent tour guide such that I would prefer to call him our host; his expertise and passion unsurpassed.Aine was always available with a 'can do' to assist when needed. If I had one criticism, which my tour mates agree on, it's that 10 days was too short to thoroughly enjoy what the towns we visited offered.

A 10+!. The tour was great, the co-travelers were great, the tour guide, Seumas Macletchie, was phenomenal (only "complaint" was that he has such a soothing, FM-radio-type voice, and I was so tired, that he lulled me into a great sleep on the bus trips- (I really needed a vacation!). I hope I didn't miss too much from all the napping, but that part was nice, too; had a chance to relax.

Sorry I have taken so long to reply. As always another GREAT TOUR! Number 14 since 2001! I selected Scotland because last year was the Ireland tour and a few years ago England. Since I am a history teacher I decided to venture to Scotland to understand the very complicated relationship between England, Ireland, and Scotland. Not easy!Still OUTSTANDING! Great guides, great fellow travelers! Scotland lovely! Loved the rain since Utah is super dry! Wonderful history! Great food! Haggis is terrific

Each day was a new experience and enthusiastically shared by Anne Doig, our guide. I don't think there's anything about Scotland's history, people and countryside Anne doesn't know about. Our tour took us to a city, small towns, the Highlands and the sea. I'd return in a minute.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Though I loved, loved the sheepdogs and the Highlands, I absolutely loved the coast (Glencoe, Oban and the Isle of Iona). The small town feel was amazing and one could feel how the area must have been many years ago (before we tourists tumbled in). I must say it's difficult to choose when the Highlands was offered as part of the tour as well. "In the historic village of Culross, the palace's "painted chamber" was a WOW.The ceiling contains scenic panels painted when this 1600's building was built and they are still intact. It's unbelievable that the paintings survived the years. A second WOW moment was Glen Coe valley from the top of the chair lift. Anne offered us a "wee dram" as we disembarked. Planning a trip and seeing the itinerary gives you hope of the possibilities. This tour was beyond memorable. We experienced Scotland, not just visited it. The style of the trip is laid back, informative and minimally touristy. We had a great group of people that ALL wanted to interact. We got to know each other. Getting Anne Doig was indescribable. She not only knows the history but related it to each person as it related to their history. She is friendly and caring. She became a friend.

Anne Doig is wonderful. The tour was well thought out, the stops were very interesting and beautiful, the group members were compatible, always on time, and no grumps! Fun group. Only negative was the restaurant on the final night. Too small as 8 of us sat at a table a distance away from the main group, the staff did not have the correct information as was on the contract, such disorganization/confusion as to paying/not paying for wine. A mess inspire of Anne's efforts.

Outstanding trip. Just the proper balance between urban and rural, pre-history, history, and chances to talk current events. I liked the balance of the three castles -- ruins, a working home with gardens, and a historically significant stronghold. Definitely vote to retain Culross stop as we had plenty of time in St. Andrews. Liked Inverness and thank you for NOT stopping at the Loch Ness museum. I could have skipped the Cullowden battlefield but it was OK. Loved Oban and Iona.

I liked the small size of the tour group. We were able to get acquainted easier, I think. I like that the bus was not crowded. I liked the free time to roam around.

I enjoyed the tour. I felt like Edinburgh was left to our own to explore which seemed odd - no planned tour of the castle or Holyrood. Having Liz join us was a real plus! They explained Brexit to us from 2 different perspectives. Liz is so pleasant and James so multi-talented! We are talking up the tour with all our friends!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The shepherd with his dogs and sheep and hearing his thoughts on life and Brexit! We really felt though that we got to see so much and such a variety of places, people and activities (another was the prehistoric over the water huts)."

This was my fifth tour with Rick Steves, and as always, the guide gave me so much background and insight into the country and culture of Scotland. I felt immersed in the culture and feel that I have much more appreciation for both the Scottish people and my own heritage. I'm so glad I got to experience both the lowlands and the highlands of Scotland. I have an understanding of the geography, history, and cultures of the two areas now. James had such insight, having grow up in the highlands.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved all of the tour, but the sheep farm with the working dogs was amazing. The herder controlled nine border collies at once!! He gave us insight into that vanishing way of life. And the puppies were so much fun for all of us!! I think it was a bonding experience for our group. We all really relaxed and enjoyed each other."

The tours each day we're good. The hotels were not....hot, sticky, beds like rocks, pillows like boards, toilets wouldn't flush, windows couldn't open, no air, therefore, no sleep. Another hotel had mattresses that hung over the sides of the actual bed which made you fall out as it slid every time you rolled over. Ricks Old World has lost its charm for me.

The tour was well organised and l always enjoy the many places you get to explore while travelling on the bus. The scenery in Scotland is amazing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was our 3rd Rick Steves Tour and it exceeded all our expectations. Our tour guide Helen was was absolutely fantastic. Her knowledge about Scotland was Impressive. She went above and beyond getting us into the Highland Games in Kenmore, and moving us along efficiently on the Ferry :) Loved the Castles, Crannogs, St. Andrews, Sheepdogs and all the Scenery. Tour group of 28 was perfect, lots of room to spread out on the bus.

I have been to Scotland several times but had opportunities for experiences on this tour that greatly exceeded what I have done in the past. This is my 10th RS tour. We keep coming back because of the experiences, the guides, philosophy of RS travel & how nice fellow RS travelers are. Can no longer rate the experience outstanding though because size of the tour group keeps getting bigger. At 28 people it is now becoming like many other tours and is losing some of what made RS tours special.

Favorite "WOW" moment

From beginning to end, the tour offered so many different experiences. The tour got a good sense of old and new Edinburgh, saw Scottish Highland games, stayed in charming hotels, and had excellent food. Helen , our tour guide was very knowledgeable about history of Scotland. She was very helpful in answering questions and finding little gems on our journey across the country. Oban was a real treat. I personally loved the journey to the islands and appreciated their history and beauty.

While it was the experience of a lifetime, I hope I get more of these during my lifetime.

First of all, on a scale of 10 ( 10 being the best ), our guides, Colin Mairs and Charlotte Rawson were 11!!! Suggest removing Cathedral visit, near Kenmore, remove Cawdor Castle visit, take Island of Mull and Isle of Iona from itinerary, delete walk in woods following Crannogs and don't stop at Glencoe. Do something about terrible food at Kenmore- make time for castle visit next door- move bag pipe demonstration to a pub, with accompanying music. More foot stomping, eat, drink energy!!

The Best of Scotland was a very nice tour. From the history found in Edinburgh to the isle of Iona, we were able to embrace to culture and life of being in Scotland. Colin and Charlie made every effort to make our tour a rich and exciting experience. They were always friendly, smiling, and making sure we were having a great time. I loved the history of Edinburgh and found that this was my favorite place to be during the tour. The bus time versus walking time was well planned.

I had a great two evenings there, having HIghland's Inn Steak Pie and making friends in the local pub. The walk along the port at sunset was the most beautiful night I spent in Scotland. Urquhart Castle was a pleasant surprise. Off of Loch Ness, it had the most beautiful views. Glencoe was breathtaking for not only its beauty but its history."

The Best of Scotland tour was excellent in so many ways. First, the city vs. countryside experiences were spectacular as each one provided a historical perspective. When you are walking the streets of Edinburgh, you can see the historical sites and appreciate how they have been memorialized for future generations. But, the countryside like when standing in Glencoe or views from Loch Ness, words cannot provide how beautiful the landscape really is in person. Such beauty!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Of course my heart melted when holding an 8-day old sheep while watching the sheepdogs demonstration, but I had my "wow" moment when standing on top of the Glencoe mountains. The gondola ride was easy and once you arrive on top, you can see for miles and miles."

This tour provided a wonderful overview of Scotland and packed a lot of sites and activities into a relatively short period of time. We were planning to take a vacation to Scotland on our own but the logistics were too daunting. We are glad we opted for the Best of Scotland which covered 90% of what we wanted to see and included wonderful sites we would have never thought to visit. This was my first RS tour. We have previously taken Globus tours. This was by far so much better. Your itinerary was better planned, the days were full, the hotels were great, the meals were top quality, and the guide was fantastic. We enjoyed or group and became friends. Julia was great at leading us, teaching us, and making us become a community. This was a most pleasurable 10 days.

This was a fantastic tour. Our guide was excellent and the sights and experiences were all interesting. We arrived in Edinburgh three days early and we are glad we did, because there is so much to see there. You might want to consider developing a second Scotland tour to include Skye and the north coast, in-depth visits to Orkney's prehistoric ruins, and maybe even a visit to Shetland; we would certainly be interested in such a trip!

"There were many "wows" a traditional music session in a pub in Oban; listening to our guide, Julia, singing a lovely Gaelic song inside a medieval chapel at Iona, and later, hearing her play the fiddle on our ferry ride back to the mainland; the Crannog Center, where guides brought the Iron Age to life; Gillie's bagpipe demonstration; Neil and his sheepdogs; the hauntingly beautiful landscapes of Mull and Glencoe;and Iona, where connection to the deep past and the spiritual are tangible."

The Best of Scotland in 10 Days Tour was fantastic. I am especially thrilled with the diversity of the the daily agendas, and I appreciate the built in "on your own" time. I really enjoyed the fact that our stops exposed us to many different historical time periods, including the Iron Age, the era of Mary Queen of Scots and the Georgian Era of larger cities. A really fun mixture of activities, foods, drams and demonstrations, all of which helped capture the culture and history of this country.

"I was simply not prepared for the natural beauty of Scotland. I think that both Iona and Glencoe, in particular, were the most breathtaking landscapes. Glencoe looks like a Hollywood movie set, its is so heart stopping beautiful, and Iona is the same with its beaches and waterfronts."

She even entertained us with her beautiful singing, fiddle playing and step dancing! Our fifth Rick Steves tour - just as satisfying as the previous four. We love the combination of thoughtful itinerary, balance of group and free time, wonderful meals, great hotels, superb guides, and congenial travel companions. All aspects combined to provide a deep dive into the history, culture, and landscape of Scotland. A lovely mix of learning and travel. The cool, windy, rainy, misty, sunny weather variations added to the total experience.

"Two different types of "wow" moments. I wasn't expecting the Great Glen to be so awesomely impressive in visual scale and beauty. Seeing it was a "wow." Fantastic! Helen was the perfect guide. A native who's passionately in love with her country, Helen presented everything throughout the ten-day tour with great enthusiasm. The tour itself was well thought out. It's busy but not exhausting. As with other Rick Steves tours, there was time to explore by ourselves, which I really like. The experience of getting to know the others on the tour was also very enjoyable. Overall, it was sensational!

This was my first tour and I had a wonderful time. I especially appreciated the side trips that were a little off the beaten path that I would have missed if I had planned this trip myself. And there was a little treat every day, either a snack, or an unannounced stop on the way to a destination that had a spectacular view. There was history and cultural explanations of our stops. Lodging was good to great, and the meals that were provided were excellent.

Just a wonderful experience... the places and sights we saw, weather (yes, even in Scotland there is sun!), fellow tour members, bus drivers (Michael for most of the tour, and Richard on the Isle of Mull), the occasional wee dram of whiskey, and of course Helen "tour guide extraordinaire"!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many that it's hard to choose! 1. Isle of Iona! The trip there (ferry to Isle of Mull, bus ride across the island, ferry to Iona, and Iona!!). Was a perfect day (well, a bit windy), the sea looked tropical, the bus ride across Mull full of interesting facts and humor (we even stopped to wave at Richard's wife!); he pointed out birds & animals (love those Hairy Coos). 2. And the sheepdogs with Neil Ross a wow too. Loved the puppies! 3. And the Crannogs, and 4. Whisky in unexpected spots."

While nice to have everything planned it does limit flexibility as to places you would have liked more time at and others you may have skipped. For example, we couldn't see all of Sterling Castle in the time allotted which made no sense as nothing else was planned for the rest of the day.Except for Kenmore, hotels were wonderful. Room was terribly outdated and there was mold on the window sills. Our toilet would't flush and the mgr did nothing when when we brought it to their attention.

I am of Scottish background. I really liked how we got to see a wide variety of Scottish history and I must say that I am very glad to be alive now. We really got to see how barbaric and crude without equality it was in the past. Seeing the JK Rowling sites in Edinburgh allowed a more optimistic view of the Scottish legacy. We got to see totally beautiful things and interact with wonderful people. Our travel experience was fantastic with great lodging and guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Julia singing a Gaelic song in the Chapel at Iona. Had Saint Columba been there, it would have been blessed without question. Overall we didn't get as much chance to interact with Scottish locals. Julia was great but not a native, even our bus driver on Mull going to Iona was English as was the guide at Urquhart Castle.Thankfully our regular driver, Colin was Scottish and as cool as possible. Nonetheless Julia's song allowed us to drift back nearly 1500 years into a spiritual spot."

Whenever I travel to a new country, I find there's so much more to learn and see than I had expected, and this was true for Scotland. Despite weather of every stripe, everything about this tour was wonderful - a great group of easy-going, educated, fun to be with tour members from all across the US, not just 1, but 2 wonderful guides, great food, so much natural beauty, fascinating history, comfortable lodging away from the masses of tourists in other places, and a perfect itinerary.

Anne & Apprentice Charlotte (aka: Charlie), each made our time in Scotland enjoyable, educational, comfortable, adventurous, hassle free, & so much fun! There's no way my husband and I could have seen nor done as much as we did, if left to our own devices within the country and not on a Rick Steves tour.
