Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to England

The beautiful Georgian city of Bath is a 90-minute train ride from central London. We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel for a "Welcome to England" get-together. Then we'll take a short neighborhood orientation walk and get acquainted over a traditional roast dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Bath.

Day 2: Roman and Georgian Bath

Our day begins with a walking tour of Bath's charming streets, including its medieval abbey square and the imposing sweep of its Royal Crescent. Next we're off to tour the town's remarkably preserved, 2,000-year-old Roman Baths, where you'll have a chance to drink from these natural mineral springs in the Pump Room. The rest of the day is free to make your own discoveries in this historic town. You might visit the colorful Fashion Museum or — as Roman travelers did — bathe in a mineral spa.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Bath.

Day 3: Glastonbury and Wells

Today we'll explore and learn about mystical Glastonbury, the legendary resting place of King Arthur, where we'll also enjoy a picnic in the shadow of the abbey ruins. Later we'll tour England's oldest completely Gothic structure — the graceful Wells Cathedral — before returning to Bath in the late afternoon.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Bath.

Day 4: Stone Circles and the Cotswolds

This morning we'll take a walking tour through Avebury's mysterious prehistoric stone circles. Then we'll drive north to Blenheim Palace, touring this gilded mini-Versailles that was the birthplace of Winston Churchill. We'll end our day in the charming, flower-boxed Cotswolds market town of Stow-on-the-Wold.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Day 5: Cotswold Villages

Today we'll take a scenic Cotswolds drive, stopping to explore an ever-so-English village and to tour Stanway House, home to the local aristocracy. This afternoon you'll have free time to explore more picturesque market villages on your own — or join your guide for a leisurely country walk past cottages and sheep, through fields and kissing gates. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together at a country pub with the sounds of local folk musicians, where you can try a sip of scrumpy, the local farmhouse "hard cider."

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Day 6: Wonderful Wales

We'll begin our day visiting Stokesay Castle, a fortified manor house, where we'll learn about the feudal system and the perks of the well-born. After a lovely cream tea we'll bid cheerio to England and drive into wonderful neighboring North Wales toward the castle-topped harbor town of Conwy. You'll have time to wander through town and walk the city walls overlooking the Irish Sea before our dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Conwy.

Day 7: Sheepdogs, Castles, and Highlands

This morning we'll head to the Carneddau Mountains, where we'll visit a working farm and get to know their talented sheepdogs. Then we're off to Caernarfon to tour the impressive Caernarfon Castle, part of the system of English garrison castles that Edward I built to enforce English rule over North Wales 700 years ago. After lunch, we'll head up into majestic Snowdonia National Park for a drive through some of the most gorgeous scenery North Wales has to offer. The rest of your day is free to roam along Conwy's multi-towered city wall, historic houses, and laid-back harbor.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Conwy.

Day 8: Gardens and Lakes

We'll begin our day by exploring the manicured lawns, terraced beds, and extensive botanical collection of Bodnant Garden. Then we'll cross back into England and wend our way through the spectacular peaks and valleys of the Lake District, a favorite haunt of poets and painters. After an orientation to the town of Keswick, we'll end the day feasting on fish and chips together at a traditional English chippy.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Keswick.

Day 9: The Lake District

Today we'll explore the natural beauty of the Lake District. You can join your guide for a leisurely boat cruise on the island-studded Derwentwater — or strike out on a little expedition of your own 'twixt lakes and mountains, thanks to a wealth of hiking opportunities along well-marked trails. This afternoon, you'll have the chance to join your guide for a walk up to Castlerigg Stone Circle for sweeping views of the valley.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: ½ hour. No bus. Sleep in Keswick.

Day 10: Hadrian's Wall

We'll travel back in time today with a walk along Hadrian's ancient Roman wall, once considered the boundary dividing civilization and barbarity (though the Scots might disagree), followed by a tour of the Roman auxiliary fort, Vindolanda. We'll have lunch before heading to the bustling cathedral city of York. Upon arrival, we'll take a walking tour beneath the leaning, half-timbered houses of The Shambles in the city's marvelous medieval center. Tonight we'll indulge in England's favorite ethnic food with a tasty Indian dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in York.

Day 11: York Minster and the Medieval City

We'll begin our day marveling at York Minster's stained glass windows on our tour of the largest Gothic church north of the Alps. You'll have the rest of the day free to explore more of this enchanting city. It's a great night to enjoy an ethereal evensong choir performance in the Minster.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in York.

Day 12: Westminster Abbey and Regal London

Today we'll board a train and make a beeline past the Midlands for London. Upon arrival, we'll enjoy an entertaining guided bus tour, hearing tales about Big Ben, the river Thames, St. Paul's Cathedral, and more. Then, led by a local guide, we'll visit Westminster Abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066. A thousand years of English history lie within its stained-glass splendor and under its stone slabs. Later this afternoon, we'll check into our hotel and get oriented to our neighborhood and London's Tube. Tonight is a perfect evening for the theater (book something in advance from the Colonies or pick up a ticket in London).

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 2 hrs. Bus: 2 hrs. Sleep in London.

Day 13: Tower of London and the River Thames

This morning we'll begin our day of sightseeing with the medieval Tower of London (the first "skyscraper" of its time), where you can join a tour with a witty Beefeater and get a close-up look at the UK's majestic collection of crown jewels. Then we'll take a panoramic cruise on the river Thames. We'll disembark at Westminster, where you'll be free to explore the Churchill War Rooms, tour the British Museum, or take a walk through one of the city's wonderful parks. Tonight we'll meet for a final group dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Cheers!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: ½ hr. No bus. Sleep in London.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

It was awesome! I loved Gareth and the sheep. Due to the Queen, things had to be changed around a bit but we were still able to see everything.

The Queen died, and nobody got COVID! A historic time to be in England, and all did well health-wise ... so overall a successful trip!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"When we returned to London at the end of the trip, and we were let loose to explore, with the hundreds of thousands of mourners, roads closed to autos and pedestrians, and amidst the mobs, no trouble or concerns .. an air of excitement in the air, and all were thrilled to be there."

Overall, considering that the Queen of England died and our tour itinerary had to be changed at the last minute, we had a wonderful experience of the varied sites and historical places unique to England and Wales. While we could have spent days at each place, a taste of the highlights of the Best of England and Wales gave the tour enough so that we could go back home charmed by each of the sites. My biggest regret was that Roy never had us introduce ourselves to each other to learn our names.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Watching my granddaughter Molly help "The Hill Farmer" Gareth Wyn Jones herd sheep with his sheep dog in Wales. This was an experience Molly will never forget. I remembered to video the experience, as this was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill for Molly, who loves all animals. We each bought Mr. Jones's book and wonder how to watch his TV show from the States. I loved Alfred Hickling's fun tour of York. His historical knowledge was interesting but also great fun. At Wells, the guide Tom also was great"

The tour provided a great exploration of northern England and a bit of Wales. I felt as if I not only saw “the sights” but that I was able to interact with the people who lived their and get their views on the history that we were seeing. I also liked the free hours/ days that we had to explore an area on our own. Ray, our guide, was terrific at giving us ideas as to what to do on these days.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The outstanding moment of the tour for me was climbing the Cat Bells by Lake Derwentwater! I have never climbed something so high and the views were incredible all of the way up. Also, the people hiking the trail were all friendly and helpful and we helped each other over the rough parts and we laughed so much both on the way up and down. And, their was an ice cream truck waiting for us at the end of our climb!"

I enjoyed the highly rural feel of this tour. It was wonderful to spend so much of the trip outside of major metropolitan areas. We were able to really get a feel for the quintessential English countryside. I very much appreciated the scenery, castles, and gardens as well. Bath, Wales, Hadrian's Wall, and York were highlights. I delighted in so many hidden gems - and we got very lucky with glorious weather as well! Bonus!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Having consumed so many British historical/regency movies, I fulfilled a major wish early on by exploring Bath. Seeing The Royal Crescent and The Circus were highlights for me that we checked off right away. But beyond that, there were many wow moments: I feel the peaceful and wild landscape views in Wales were outstanding, and standing atop Hadrian's wall gave me a powerful sense of connection with history."

Our best of England Tour was excellent! Sites on this tour are varied, educational, and beautiful. During the tour we were able to see the historic and cultural connections between locations. Our guide Paul worked with our driver, David, to provide little extras during the trip that really enhanced our experience. The Queen passed away during our trip and Paul handled all the schedule changes effortlessly. Overall, an incredible tour that mixed the cities and countryside very well.

Rick Steves' tours are extremely organized, stress free and a pleasure to join. Traveling in a smaller-size group is beneficial because you have flexibility, meet great people and get a chance to spend as much time getting to know them as you wish. Access to a guide while traveling is invaluable. Everything is of high quality to make the overall experience very positive.

I liked the efficiency of staying in the heart of the cities and the variety of things we saw. I wish we would have started the tour in London rather than ending it there because by the time you get to that point of your trip, you are more tired and your clothes become tiresome too.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I enjoyed the sheep farm and the hike we took in Ketrick. Also enjoyed the music at pub night. I thought there may be a way to rub shoulders with the locals but we were always in a separate upstairs room. I guess we needed to do that on our own when dinners were not included."

Meeting off-duty police officers on the wharf in Conwy who chatted us up as the sun went down simply because they loved our accents. Hearing their story of solving a long bow murder. And perhaps best of all, standing in a field in the greener than green hills of Wales being amazed as a sheepdog herded a dozen sheep into a small pen just for us!"

This was the best Rick Steves tour I've done so far, and the other tours were fantastic! Our tour guide Deborah really made a difference; she was wonderful! From meals to attractions to optional extras, it all added up to a perfect trip!

As always, I loved the diversity of experiences that this tour had to offer. A good mix of both guided & free time to explore on my own. We were once again pleased to enjoy an itinerary curated with the eye, taste and experience of the icon of European travel, Rick Steves. Not only could we feel Rick's fingerprint on the hotel selections, menus, selected tour stops and guides, but also on the group of fellow travelers that Rick's tours attract. We came away with a much richer cultural appreciation for England and Wales compared to what we had only experienced earlier via media.

Well-coordinated, I really felt safe and comfortable. We had a competent safe driver. I was not worried about mechanical failure or mishaps. He is kind and helpful. Our guide was great. We had 2 actually, they talked while on the bus about rich history and sites along the way. I really enjoyed the hikes in the evenings. I was pleased with each of my rooms, beautiful breakfasts, meals and good beer. We had free time and the tour was paced well getting to events early to beat the crowds.

Overall, I really enjoyed the tour. Getting to stay in such, to me, iconic British towns was a wonderful way to experience places I have long read about and seen portrayed on the screen. Fortunately we had two tour guides and each was outstanding in their own way. Learned a lot about English history going back to the pre-Romans, and those history lessons were nicely summed up in our tour of Westminster Abbey with Gillian.

The Best of England was incredible! Each day was planned perfectly- guided tours, meals and what I loved the most, the “down time”. Using Rick’s guidebook, we were able to plan our own adventures, sightseeing excursions and find hidden gems for truly unique dining. Our guide, Lorraine, guide in training, Debra and tour bus driver Ali, were friendly, knowledgeable and sensitive to our needs (due to the extreme heat when we were touring).

The tour was amazing, the description of the tour on the website is exactly what we experienced. Especially when they mention the walking, take the day to day mileage seriously if basing you tour pick off of that. The trip itself was incredible and very well planned out, the mixture of tour group activities and alone time was perfect. All of the hotels were very accommodating especially when our tour was there for the worst heat wave they’ve had in years.

Very good tour; well organized. This was our first Rick Steves tour so we weren't sure what to expect, but we were very happy with the tour itinerary and logistics. Our tour group was wonderful, as was the tour guide Jeanie. We would recommend this tour, but perhaps at a different time of year as the crowds (especially in London) were too much. Would also recommend that Rick Steves Tours reconsider the hotel in London as we had a terrible experience there and with our extra night booking.

I found this tour to be a rich mixture of cathedrals, castles, manor houses, history, and scenery. I learned much about English and Welsh history from Roman times onward that I had previously known nothing about. The variety of religious sites visited, from the abbey ruins at Glastonbury and York, to the sights at York Minster, Wells Cathedral, Bath Abbey, and Westminster Abbey was perfect. However, my favorite times were absorbing the scenery of the Lake District, Wales, and the Cotswolds.

It was so entertaining, and at the same time, educational about the challenges facing farmers. That said, there were many other Wow moments along the way such as the folk music during the group dinner in Stow-on-Wold, the picnic among the Abbey ruins at Glastonbury, the boat cruise/hike around Durwentwater, visiting Hadrian's Wall and Vinlandia, & the walking tour around York."

The only reason my experience was not outstanding was due to the HUGE crowds everywhere. Understandably, after being locked down by Covid, locals and tourists alike are out in hordes. We found the tour superb. The guide Jeanie Carmichael was a real person. Knowledgeable, helpful, interesting and opinionated. All of these contributed to a fun and rewarding trip. It was quite nice to have a second guide (Paul Guest) who could add his perspective and help regularly with all manner of issues. We also got to know our bus driver Ali who added another dimension. The combination of organized tours and meals with sufficient free time to do and see things that we wanted was great

"I do not think that there was one wow moment, but several. Almost all the more unique aspects of a Rick Steves' tour were our favorites. We loved the visit to the Stanway house, we unexpectedly loved the visit to Wales (at night I enjoyed listening to the loud revelers leaving the bars outside our hotel), the Sheep Farm was outstanding, the musicians in the Cotswolds at dinner were great and the visit to Bodnant Garden was extraordinary. We also loved the interesting stories that Jeanie told"

Our guide, Jeanie Carmichael, was fantastic!! With her years of experience she had every issue covered and really clever sayings and stories that kept us in laughter and good spirits. I found all the sites we visited worthwhile; beautiful castles & palaces, unusually neat and tidy country fields & roads in the Lake District, Cotswolds, and Yorkshire Dales. However, I was sorry we didn't take more time to see the scenery in Snowdonia National Park. I'd really looked forward to that in Wales.

"The Bodnant Gardens in North Wales was a double "Wow!!" I can't remember ever being so impressed with an arboretum or botanic garden ........ except the Keukenholf Gardens near Amsterdam in the middle of tulip time (while on another RSE tour with Rolinka Bloeming). This May 15th found us at the peak time for beautiful spring flowers, blooming shrubs and trees in North Wales. Another special time was the Wales sheepdog farm with the owner's stories about his land & dogs + holding the puppies!"

I was a little skeptic about spending two weeks with complete strangers and frankly didn't know what to expect. It was with out a doubt the best two weeks ever! Some of our fellow travelers were 1st timers and some had been on many Rick Steves tours. Everyone was friendly and eager to experience different cultures. The whole trip was so well planned. We had great accommodations and the food was very good. I was so impressed with our guide, Jeanie Carmichael. She was excellent!

"It's hard to pick a favorite moment of the tour. I loved getting up each morning having breakfast with friends. The history of England was a real issue for me. Seeing all the places I have read about and studied was very meaningful. I love English history and Jeanie knew it well. She made history real, telling stories of the lives of kings and queens and what went on in centuries past. Seeing Cathedrals and Palaces, especially Westminster Abbey where so many bodies are buried."

Jeannie Carmichael was an amazing guide, so knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. Paul Guest, the assistant guide was also funny and helpful. My fellow travelers made the trip even more enjoyable--it was like traveling with 22 friends. The lodging was exceptional. We had used Rick Steves' guidebooks for years when we were poorer and traveling with a young child. The lodging on those trips were memorable, quirky, but not luxurious. Not so with this trip ending at the Mayfair.

This tour needs to be re-thought/restructured. i took the tour to see/experience English history and towns, not hike through forests and gardens. Guide was a nice guy, but he didn't "read the group". People over 70 need loo breaks, time to eat lunch, and a slower pace. This was my 4th Rick tour, I have recommended Rick tours to others, I'm a fan. But I will begin to explore other tour groups in the future. Very disappointed.

Here is how good we felt about our tour of England (our fourth RS tour): during our first week home, we booked a RS tour of Ireland! Mark was an excellent primary guide as were all of the local guides- we appreciate interacting with people who can describe, i.e., teach, with a sense of humor, as was the case in this tour. We liked both the openness of the small cities and towns and the hustle/bustle of London. We even became quite functional on London's underground!

This was a fantastic tour made possible by great people, great itinerary and a great guide. It is not easy to distill England into 14 days, but this tour pulled it off. This is the longest of the four RS tours we've taken and I was happy with the pacing of bus vs. overnight stays vs. activities vs. downtime. Each day was different and full of surprises. I especially enjoyed the time in Wales, the Lake Country and Northumbria but it was all-in-all a great itinerary and nice balance between city and countryside.

"There were many WOWs for me on this trip. If I have to pick one, it would be standing on Hadrian's Wall and later exploring the excavations and museum at Vindolanda, imagining thousands of Roman troops braving the weather and terrain of Northumbria, so far from their homes and literally on the brink of what was then civilization. Perhaps it was the weather that day-intermittent rain, wild wind and a double rainbow--but the ghosts came up from the ground and told me their stories that day."

The tour was great! It had the right amount of guide support, tickets , transport, lodging, restaurants and free time to do other things and explore on our own. The group size was fine. The places visited included ones I have always wanted to go to ( Cotswolds and Lake District) and others I did not know about and liked immensely (Bath, York, Castlerigg stone circle.) The activity level was about right. A little more walking would not have hurt.

This year I was looking for a tour that included small towns and cities, nice country walks and smaller crowds. This tour accomplished all of that. This is a really nice itinerary. History, scenic beauty, decent (sometimes great) weather, surprisingly good food and an excellent guide. The group of travelers was also very good. We bonded well and enjoyed each other's company. Our bus driver, Jim became part of the touring family and kept us safe. Our private tours were excellent and as promised, we walked for miles. We will do another tour when we can.

So great. Couldn't ask for a better trip. Liz so professional but personable as well as knowledgeable. Steps steps and more steps. Too bad couldn't have help if needed but was perfectly clear when booking there was not going to be. The change in itinerary leaving out Westminster Abbey caused us to miss charging of guard because of time conflict.

From beginning to end the tour was organized, interesting, educational and FUN! Our guides Elizabeth and Paul were engaging, knowledgeable and eager to not just play their role as guides but come to welcome and know us as a friend from across the "pond" The hotel and accommodations were as expected, clean, quaint and quiet. Our bus was spacious modern and very comfortable. Our driver Jim brought a measure of levity to the group and fit in perfectly. Our meals were more than adequate.

The tour was GREAT. Had all the elements of what a tour should be. Great guide. Good balance of History, stunning scenery, ruins (I happen to love ruins) AND, a surprise to me, great food!. Everything ran smooth and seamless. Our fellow travelers were a wonderful group. We moved at an easy pace, ( with lots of walking) which is typical of a Rick Steve's tour. Gillian, our guide, is a highlight in and of herself. England is everything you imagine it would be. Every place has epic history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Wales and Lake District were absolutely stunning. Bodnant Gardens! This is the way the earth is meant to be. I always imagined England to be green with rolling hills, sheep etc, but didn't expect it to exceed my imagInation! I have to say the food was fantastic. I didn't expect to love the food so much. If your guide suggests a place for dinner, just go there. Gareth Wyn Jones's Sheep farm was an wonderful educational experience. Loved it."

To have a great overall tour experience , you need to have a great guide and great fellow tour members, which I did for sure. Then you need a fun, interesting, challenging itinerary and this RS tour met that. I learned so much about the England |Wales history while seeing beautiful cities and countryside. Gillian even made sure we had fantastic weather! Gillian felt like your best friend to each one of us, very informative, fun and fed us "biscuits" on the bus! A perfect RS Tour experience!

This was our third RST and like the previous two we throughly enjoyed ourselves. By the time the tour was over you feel like one big family. England in 14 days has a good mixture of activities ranging from diverse towns, landscape, castles, churches, hiking, demonstrations, and music. The tour is active but allows individuals the time to relax.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have seen great scenery, architecture, and demonstrations like sheep herding, but you don't expect to see a young coach driver play the organ in a 12th century church. Turns out Joseph is a classically trained organist and he graced us with his talent and passion that left you in awe and in my case tears. We were interested in history and the food. We were very satisfied on both fronts! Our tour guide, Gillian kept us on track but was also an incredible source of knowledge. She also leveraged the local tour guides very effectively. We loved her musical interludes as we traveled on the bus. Plenty of time outside the formal tour allowed us to really explore the real England- we met wonderful and colorful people.

This was a great trip for me. The group was lots of fun with everyone getting along. I personally think it is because Rick Steves tour people are usually PBS watchers and that gives them some commonality to begin with. We saw a nice variety of churches, castles, gardens, and scenery (and sheep). We walked a lot (which I love) and spent a good deal of time outside. The weather was great, only one rain cancellation. We had plenty of time to explore each area and I did not feel rushed.

I very much enjoyed speaking with the people digging at the archaeological ruins at Vindolanda.

My husband and I were very tired after our tour. Probably because we didn't want to miss out on any of the side jaunts. So consequently there was very little time for shopping, especially when the shops close at 5pm. I needed another sweater because we were outside a good deal of the time. Beautiful gardens, all the castles, palaces, and manor homes were breath taking. Would have loved to have spent more time in the Cotswolds.

We would definitely want to take another trip with him as our guide. Our coach driver ,Jim, was also very sweet and a great driver. The tour was very well organized as we went from place to place with nice accommodations that were centrally located. We learned so much about each place we visited.

"My favorite time was in Conway, Wales, during our visit with Garreth and his sheep farm. I was able to get out with the sheepdog and actually give commands to get the sheep from the bottom of the pasture to the gate. We then had to keep them cornered so Garreth could grab one for sheering. I then had to grab the sheep by the wool and lead it to the barn. We then watched it get sheered. This was one of the things I most looked forward to, and so it was a great experience for me."

We were attracted by the Rick Steves philosophy, and we were not disappointed. The priority was on experiencing a place, not getting to as many tourist attractions as possible. This was our fourth Rick Steves tour and for me the least exciting. There are probably several factors: health issues, weather, and less local guides than in the past, instead we used more audio devices when touring some building. The sites we visited were wonderful. My only complaint would be that we were frequently rushed through them. For example, we had 1 hour and 15 minutes to visit Stokesay Castle and enjoy our first cream tea. The service was slow for the cream tea so we had about 10 minutes max to down our tea and scone. We had no other appointments that day, only our drive to Conway, so being 30 minutes or even an hour later to Conway would have still given us time to see Conway before nightfall.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had 2- Blenheim Palace and Bodnant Gardens. Again, more time in both would have been appreciated. We had little more than an hour at Bodnant Gardens-- barely enough time to walk to the furthest garden and back again, must less time to see the other gardens in between."

Amazing. Lorraine knowledge of the area and the history is amazing. She adds her own experiences to make the tour come alive. Her calm demeanor was greatly appreciated in our situation. I became ill and needed to go hospital. She and Paul not only help get me there for the care I needed but gave us excellent directions that enabled us to join the group a few days later. Can't say enough about how great they were to myself and husband

This is our second Rick Steves tour and it was fun, educational, and gave us a great overview of the geography, history, and culture of England. We also were able to meet and enjoy conversation with the residents of the places we visited.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The rustic beauty of the Cotswolds and Lake District, was the idyllic backdrop to the man-made beauty of Wells Cathedral, and the Roman and prehistoric archeological sites which are a particular interest of mine. The Vindolanda excavation was a rare chance to see archeological work being performed."

My goal was to be immersed in the history and culture of England and my Welsh Jones ancestry that moved to Granville NY to cut slate. Two weeks with Lorraine and Paul exceeded all expectations. I am at a loss as to what other experience could provide such an intimate peek into the history and culture of a country. From Gareth Jones hill farm to Westminster and the Celts and Romans to Winston Churchill and what's his name. WOW! The tour was efficient, respectful, fun, educational, enjoyable!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One, You gotta be kidding! This will be an affront to all the rest. Maximum goose bumps were the history, luminaries, memorials, quirks, stories, spirituality and pageantry at Westminster cathedral that really brings much of the character and essence of this small island together, an emotional and inspiring conclusion to our tour."

Great tour guide. Quality of hotels was poor, almost worth not going on the tour they were so poor. Sites visited were fun, but I would recommend taking a poll to see whether people want to spend on a whole day seeing museums in York (for example) or if they would rather go out to Castle Howard. I would also spend less time around Hadrien's wall and devote that time elsewhere. I would have loved for Cambridge or Oxford to be included in the tour.

Our tour leader, Roy, was an expert guide and humorous to keep you entertained while you learned about the culture and history of the areas we visited. There is a good mix of guided tours and time on our own to explore the places of interest to us. The hotels are small with a lot of character so you don't feel overwhelmed by large numbers of people in large hotels. The sites we visit are very interesting.

The overall experience was great but there were some memorable negative experiences due to the older hotels. There were a few hotels that were uncomfortable due to lack of air conditioning (In Keswick we had our windows open and were invaded by gnats) and lack of hot water (cold shower in Stowe On The Wold). I would appreciate a more mixed age group. Our last tour had more young adults which made things more interesting, I think.

So my side trips to Stratford-Upon-Avon and to Grasmere, as well as the tour visit to Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner, were definitely highlights. This was a very active tour, so much so, that it is challenging to go back thru my photo's are accurately document what they are showing. We had a very good, punctual tour group; which meant we easily got thru our agendas for the day. This tour was extremely well choreographed; we always got to sites at the optimal time to get in and get out. We rarely had to fight a crowd. The meals were typical British, which is to say, they weren't French or Italian. The Guinness was exceptional.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour and it did not disappoint. Our tour guide Mark was engaging and knowledgeable about all things British. His commentary on our tour made History come alive for us. There was plenty of down time to explore each town or just relax. Most of hotels had bigger rooms than we expected which was nice. The breakfasts provided at each hotel gave lots of options from Full English Breakfasts to Porridge with Sultanas at out Hotel in Keswick ( my favorite of the tour).

The tour was exactly as advertised; no hidden charges - we knew exactly what to expect. We appreciated this as it was our first tour. I rated it very good, because of me! I am not that social, so the shared meals (especially needing to talk the first thing in the am with people I don't know), was absolutely past my comfort zone. When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit England. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summer has its advantages, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).
