Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to London

We'll meet at our hotel in central London at 3 p.m. to get acquainted. Then we'll set off on a neighborhood walk before stepping aboard our very own vintage double-decker bus for a panoramic tour of "The Old Smoke" (London). We'll finish the evening with a "Welcome to London" dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs.

Day 2: Westminster and Whitehall

After an Underground/Tube orientation, we'll wander through the City of Westminster. Our walk will take us past Buckingham Palace, punctuated by the smartly dressed, stony-faced Queen's Guard, and through St. James Park, a favorite for its resident pelicans, on our way to the majestic Westminster Abbey. We'll enjoy a guided tour of the abbey, where England's kings and queens have been crowned and buried since 1066, and continue with a history-laced walking tour along Whitehall. After a busy morning, we'll rest our feet while enjoying that quintessentially English experience: afternoon tea. Then you'll be ready to explore the treasure-packed British Museum.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 3: The Tower, The City, and St. Paul's

This morning we'll head out early to witness the opening ceremony at the medieval Tower of London. Our early arrival will leave us first in line to join a Yeoman Warder "Beefeater" for an entertaining tour and a close-up look at the UK's magnificent collection of Crown Jewels. This afternoon, we'll take a walking tour of The City, the oldest part of London and today one of the world's key financial centers. Then we'll continue on to England's national church — Christopher Wren's majestically domed St. Paul's Cathedral — and hear how local "fire watcher" volunteers saved this symbol of British resolve during the bombing raids of World War II. Your evening is free — consider staying near St. Paul's to hear the evensong.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 4: East London and the Churchill War Rooms

Today we'll venture out to the culturally diverse East End of London, where we'll find our lunch on a food tour. The tour will guide us through the history of the East End, tasting the influence of cultures along the way — from a traditional English bacon butty to Indian curries and the beloved London takeaway fish and chips. Once we have had our fill, we'll visit the Churchill War Rooms, where we'll get the inside story on the London Blitz and Britain's leadership during World War II. This evening is free and perfect for the theater (book a popular show in advance online or pick up a ticket in London).

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 5: Historic Windsor Castle

Today we'll catch a train and head out of town to Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest castle residence in the world. We'll spend the morning touring the Royal Family's castle, ornate St. George's Chapel, and the surrounding park. The remainder of the day is yours for poking around the quaint town of Windsor or for more sightseeing back in London. Tonight, join your guide and fellow tour members for a pint at a local pub and share the stories of your day's experience. This is another good night for the theater.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: 2 hours.

Day 6: Borough Market and the South Bank

We'll begin our morning with a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the half-timbered and thatched-roofed replica of the original theater that was home to the playwright's productions in the late 1500s. Then we'll take a walking tour along the South Bank of the Thames. We'll see the Tower Bridge and Southwark Cathedral, and learn how this side of the river has evolved since Roman times. We'll end our tour at Borough Market, one of the oldest and largest food markets in London, with colorful produce and the wafting scents of grilled-cheese and duck-confit sandwiches. The afternoon is yours to enjoy lunch at the market, visit the Tate Modern, hop on a Thames River cruise, or take a ride on the London Eye. Tonight, we'll meet for our "last supper" and raise a toast to London and new friends. Cheers!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be easily reached by Tube, train, or taxi from our London neighborhood. For those not ready to return home yet, London is a great jumping off point to Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Cheerio!

I enjoyed the tour very much despite the unexpected changes on the itinerary due to Queen Elizabeth II passing. Gillian, our tour guide, did a remarkable job in filling in new activities for the ones that were canceled.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Tower Bridge wowed me! I saw the bridge in pictures only ever since I grew up in Hong Kong. I couldn't believe that it was in front of me, pitch pitch. Secondly, the crown jewels were amazing!! Again, pictures in my head for years came alive."

The week before our Rick Steve's tour we went on a Viking River Cruise from Paris to Normandy and back to Paris. The following week we went on the Rick Steve's tour. Although we enjoyed our Viking River Cruise, we enjoyed the Rick Steve's tour more. We think that speaks for itself. We have been on Caravan and Globus bus tours and our Rick Steve's Tour Guide Tom was the BEST.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were at Windsor castle when we were notified that the Queen was not doing well and the family was on their way to Scotland. We were in London when Queen Elizabeth II passed away. Our hotel was 1/4 mile from Buckingham palace so many of us immediately walked to the palace to pay our respects. Throughout this process our Guide was Exemplary, to say the least."

Our tour guide, Tom, was fun and very knowledgeable. Seeing London was a breeze because of the tour. It was sad but so memorable to have been there during the Queen's passing. Tom was very moved by her death.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Being at Windsor Castle as the Queen was passing and seeing the love of the London residents for her. My favorite part of the tour was Tower of London followed by the Churchill War Rooms. Funny side note: on the bus Tom was going over our upcoming itinerary. I heard him say we were going to the 'Church of Warrens' on Wednesday afternoon. I was so disappointed because I thought we weren't going to the Churchill War Rooms. We had fun with that for the rest of the the tour."

We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of London and our guide, Tom, was a major reason along with the overall itinerary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several great moments but the Tower of London was especially interesting. However, being in London at the time of the passing of the Queen was historic. My wife and I were in a small restaurant and an older (80's) gentleman turned to the other diners and respectfully held out his cell phone for all to see a news bulletin on the screen; "the Queen has died", it was very moving."

On balance, the tour met my expectations for a Rick Steve's city tour: an excellent guide (Tom), excellent local guides, and a well thought out set of activities.

The tour included many key sites and experiences of London. We loved our location in central London that was so close to Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly, and the parks. Our guide, Tom, was wonderful and helped to create a memorable experience while managing our group with humor and intelligence. He taught us so much! We also liked our walking culinary tour in the East End. Our visit has made the Queen’s funeral so much more real to us.

The tour provided a really good overview of London. The many destinations were well-chosen and gave us as good a sense of the city as we could hope for in the time we had. The only thing we were not satisfied with was our lead guide, John, who was not up to the standard we expect from Rick Steves. Our local guides, by contrast, were uniformly strong.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I think the food tour of East London was probably our favorite event — the guide was outstanding and the tour itself was very interesting and tasty. We also loved the Globe Theater tour. My daughter (48) and I could not have had a better experience. I had been to London several tim did not want to make all the arrangements and was happy to be in an organized tour. This was my first solo trip to Europe, and my fifth Rick Steve's tour. I knew I could count on the tour to help me see all the things I wanted while giving me free time to explore the important sights I wanted to see. That's exactly what happened, and I felt safe and in good hands at the hotel and with our wonderful guide, Lady Chadwick!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Borough Market! I went to the Globe theater by myself one night, and I left the underground, turned the corner and found myself in the middle of the party of the century! At least that's what it seemed like to me! Everyone was laughing and talking and drinking together. It was standing room only, and I had to wade through the crowds! It was hard to tell where the patrons from one establishment ended and the next began. I felt I was really experiencing life in the UK. It really was exciting."

This is Karyn, David’s wife, Completing the survey for our ‘7days In London Tour’…. Great Guide in Gillian, well thought out, well planned, and so interesting. Loved that we used all forms of transportation and that we had time to explore on our own. On a personal note, I learned that I am not a big fan of following a group around - especially the slow folks (of which there were several!!) I hung close to our guide, who walked at my speed, and enjoyed the tour more when I was with her.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Impossible to have just one - London is such an amazing city mixing the old and the new - because of the jubilee celebrations, we couldn’t get near buckingham palace, so seeing Windsor was extraordinary! I also loved the little hidden lanes here and there that ended up being adorable restaurant/shopping areas - very London!"

This was our first city tour and we are so glad we decided to see London on a Rick Steves tour. Our days were busy, but well paced and we saw so much more than we would have on our own. Our guide Gillian did an amazing job getting us all where we needed to be, giving us the historic background that we needed, and helping us to appreciate each and every place we visited. This may have been our first, but it definitely won’t be our last city tour.

"Shakespeare’s Globe theater, even though it’s a recreation of the original, hit me with a wonderful dose of historic wonder. We had a wonderful time on the walking tour of London. Our guide, Gillian, was fantastic. The hotel was nice and the staff were friendly. It was definitely strenuous physically. There were days we walked 8 miles. But we were able to see so many sites while still having time to do our own sightseeing several days. It was a great way to see London.

First time in London. Our tour guide, Jeanie, was amazing! Very impressed with London mass transit, particularly the Tube - great signage and maps. It was brilliant. Our guide, Tom, was just fantastic - erudite and entertaining, with the wonderful British snarky sense of humour, perfectly judged for the crowd. We got to know the Tube really well, so it was easy to get places during free afternoons and on the days we stayed in London after the tour ended. "The Churchill War Rooms, hands down. The rooms and furnishings themselves were fascinating, and the videotaped interviews of people who had lived and worked in those rooms for years gave the site a startling authenticity. Wonderful experience. The tour closely matched the description. (exactly basically) Very well organized; appropriate activities. Good food and options. By far the best part and the glue that held the tour together was the guide Tom. Extremely knowledgeable, the perfect mix of valued and fun information without too much, kept the group together, on time and aware without nagging - and a fantastic (British) sense of humor. The guide went out of his way to value each member of the group.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many "wow" moments, but I especially enjoyed the East End Food Tour. It was a more hands-on, personal experience a little different from touring a church or museum. A great chance to see a different yet vibrant part of London, with wonderful stories and - as we discovered - a variety of tasty treats."

This tour hit all the highlights of London while still allowing individual time to explore or relax. I would emphasize that this is indeed a strenuous tour with lots of walking, standing and stairs. Those that aren't in decent shape or have "bum knees" will definitely feel it. The thrill of being in London and the distraction of all that history (plus some ibuprofen) helps to manage the aches and pains. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the chapel to the American Armed Forces in St. Paul's Cathedral. It serves as an eternal tribute to those who gave their all for the freedom of the U.K., Europe and democracy. London was exquisite. I was struck by the graciousness, the polite responses I received from everyone from store personnel, hotel staff and the stranger on the street. The hotel was perfect - centrally located within easy walking distance to public transit and major attractions. Roy was an excellent guide, providing a thorough orientation to the city and expanding on the historical significance of everything we experienced from the British Museum to Brexit.

"We got a glimpse of the Queen leaving Parliament in her gilded carriage on the day she addressed that body. Although we were behind barriers, we could see her profile along with Prince Charles and his wife. This was only because our guide for the Westminster Abbey tour (Brian) offered to take us to the corner where he knew the carriage would pass when we completed our Westminster tour. He went out of his way to give us that opportunity and it was delightful!!"

Visiting the UK has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, and this experience was everything I hoped for and more. We were so fortunate to have Jeanie as a guide with her extensive knowledge, profound kindness, and delightful wit. One of the best things about London is that you can be in the middle of traffic and busy commuters, turn the corner, and all of a sudden, you're in a quiet churchyard or a serene park. It was my second Rick Steves tour--hopefully of many more to come!

"I enjoyed the entire week, but visiting Westminster Abbey was the highlight. To finally be in the presence of such incredible history and see so many eminent figures honored there was completely awe-inspiring. The tour was as described but I was not prepared for the ACTUAL level of activity (amount, distance, pace). It was fast-paced and pretty exhausting! I was concerned about the hotel, as it did not get great reviews on-line. But, it was a nice place and centrally located for tube travel. Having Shepard's Market across the street was AMAZING, especially when the weather was bad or we were too tired to go too far from the hotel for dinner. The group was a good mix of singles vs couples.

Seven days is just not enough time to fully experience everything London has to offer. However, this tour provides a good overview of some major sights. The London Tour book included in the tour kit was so helpful. I felt prepared to explore safely and comfortably during the two days I spent solo before meeting the group. All in all, it was a very educational trip which I enjoyed in many ways - the historical sites (and the history), the local customs and the food. Even the weather, which was mostly sunny and warm, cooperated except for a brief downpour on my last day. Our guide, Tom, our guide, was excellent and all of us marveled at his mastery of the history of the sites we visited. His (droll? sly?) sense of humor was captivating and had us hanging on to every word he said.

This was our first guided tour and it could not have been better. We saw things we would never have seen or even known about had we been on our own. Jamie our guide knows his stuff. Very knowledgible and professional. He had everything organized and on schedule. The hotel was very nice and in a great location. Others who guided us on the walking food tour and at the Shakespeare Globe theater were also excellent. The audio system used on the tour was excellent

I toured many historic sites, learned an amazing amount of British history and enjoyed the camaraderie among the tour group. There was just enough free time each day to allow for individual exploring such as gardens in local parks or the theater. Our tour guide, Jamie, knew a massive amount of Information. He was successful in getting us all to places on time either by walking, the Tube, bus and the train. Very impressive.

"There were so many! Walking right next to Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots tombs was very moving. I'll never forget seeing the Tower of London gates that Anne Boleyn traveled through, the writing on the walls there and, of course, the Crown Jewels. Visiting Windsor Castle and St George's Chapel was amazing. I also took a day on my own to tour Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace to learn more about Queen Victoria. They were beautiful."

A nice enjoyable tour with very friendly people, BUT, there was either a website mistake or we weren't given 1 of the dinners. We rec'd 2 dinners, 1 on first night and one on last night. Website info under "What is included" said we would receive half our dinners, which would be 3 dinners. I emailed about this earlier; waiting for final reply from you. Someone should correct/clarify website about the London tour dinners.

Wonderful- Jillian especially was an outstanding tour guide. Despite having done this tour many times, Jillian still had the enthusiasm of first time tour guide. She was fun to be with and extremely knowledgeable. The fellow travelers were also a joy to get to know . The London trip was not my first choice nor my second or third, but it was one of my favorite trips that I have ever been on. The way that Rick Steves tours are designed take all of the guesswork out and enable us to see more than we could possibly do on our own. I was out voted by the rest of my family on our 2019 vacation choice and I'm glad I was. In my mind London was just a big city with just a few things to do. Boy was I mistaken London is a fantastic city with a huge amount of history

This was my first trip to Europe, and the experience way exceeded my expectations. It felt comprehensive in that we experienced a lot of history, locations, culture and local color in a fairly short time. We also did some things that felt off the beaten path that added to the local flavor both figuratively and literally: Visiting the local markets, sampling local food. The tour was quite well organized, and from my perspective, went off without a hitch!

"It's hard to single out one, but I remember a moment in the plaza outside Westminster Abbey, looking up at that magnificent facade and thinking, I'm really here; I did this! I enjoyed having Jaime as our knowledgeable guide. The traveling group was perfect and we made new friends. However, the reason I didn't rate my experience as outstanding is because there wasn't time when we visited "shopping" areas in the morning, while the shops were still closed, to stay a little after and actually shop. First time trying a full week in one location. Although a hectic schedule, which is to be expected, it was good being in one location to unpack and enjoy that aspect. A lot was packed into one week, but we wouldn't have gotten the full flavor of London, if not. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical significance of this lovely city and the time to explore. We had a good group of people who were willing to do the work and get out there to see the world.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I enjoyed Windsor Castle and the train ride. Seeing the Queen's initial home was remarkable. According to the waving flag, she wasn't present during tour, but was there later in afternoon. This was our seventh RS tour, but our first city tour. We finished the Paris and Heart of France tour two days earlier. The city tour certainly has a different flavor: one hotel, no bus, shorter tour, less included dinners and happy hours. Nonetheless, we really enjoyed it. The first two days were quite active, perhaps too active. It was very nice to have the Oyster card loaded with 50 pounds. The quality of the bus on the first day of the tour was embarrassing; it rattled so much!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was not included in the tour. We stood at the exact same spot in front of Buckingham Palace where I had stood 57 years earlier, when I was 10 years old, watching the Changing of the Guard once again. While standing and watching The Merry Wives of Windsor, Falstaff, after drinking from a pint of beer, laughed, and then profusely spit out a mouthful of it upon the audience. After seeing Hitler's bunker at Berchtesgaden, I was shocked at how shallow Churchill's bunker was."

Love, Love, Loved Jeanie!Although our tour group had 12 people that frequently traveled together, Jeanie did her best to make this an inclusive trip for all. Additionally, our son was the youngest of the trip (12) and Jeanie treated him with great respect - not talking over him, or dumbing down the content. She gave us information in a very authentic manner, and we are sincerely greatful.

"Westminster Abby was the first wow, but certainly not the only. Our week in London was unseasonably wet, but Jeanie indicated we pushed through with "a true British spirit." We really felt special in that Jeanine was able to share some of her personal preferences and experiences with us - incuding a particular roof top. Very Wow!"

The tour guide, Jeanie, was fantastic! The hotel was in an excellent area, close to the Green Park tube station, which made it very convenient.

Jeannie Carmichael did an outstanding job of "herding cats". It can't be easy getting 26 people to pay attention to necessary details while keeping an ever pleasant demeanor. We loved the mix of organized time with plenty of free time to explore theatre, museums and palaces of our own choosing. I loved the nudging to gain comfort with the Tube an public buses. An important lesson for automobile dependent Americans

Truly an excellent time. Tour guide Jeanie Carmichael made the trip interesting, she has so many interesting historical stories of London, and in addition, she has a tremendous sense of humor. Everything was smooth, from where to go on the tube, to entering our destination spots usually without having to wait in line. One of the best travel experiences I've ever had!

This was our 4th RS tour. We continue to be impressed with how Rick Steves keeps coming up with such great guides. Gillian not only has a wealth of knowledge, but is also a genuinely nice person with a good sense of humor. One of the best aspects of these tours is meeting and interacting with a small group of total strangers, and departing a week or so later as friends. We are already looking forward to our next tour.

"Having just been to the D-Day beaches the previous week, I was fascinated and inspired by the Churchill War Rooms. I also enjoyed the social aspect of the local pubs and found the Brits to be very friendly and helpful."

I will never again stay at the Washington hotel. The staff was useless, did not speak English well, could not even help me figure out how to use my US based phone in the UK (unbelievable, as they must have many US guests), and told me they charged my credit card 50 pounds when it was really 100 pounds (in case I incurred any charges during my stay). They sent someone to my room late at night to help me with my TV who DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH AT ALL. They were totally, utterly incompetent.

My tour experience exceeded expectations. When I first booked the tour I thought it looked like a great fit- walking, good mix of activities, food plus free time for outside adventures. I was not disappointed. My friend and I had so much fun. Gillian was outstanding.

Jeanie's local perspective added a lot of flavor and enjoyment to our tour.We got more than interesting facts about history and what we were seeing, but also her own citizen's POV about life in the U.K., London. This helped us to feel that we were really experiencing the city rather than just passing through as observers. Using alternate tour guides in some of the venues, plus the food tour, kept things fresh and energetic. Being coached in the use of public transportation was a huge help.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Nothing "wow" comes to mind. It was Jeanie's personal, organized, relaxed, empowering, and humorous approach that made this such a special trip. I would say that her description of how she personally attends the Shakespeare Globe theatre with "groundling" (standing) tickets - and how unique and engaging that experience is - inspired us to check that out. It was not originally on our bucket list but it was an amazing evening that was super fun and truly unique to London."

WE WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY LONDON, A CITY WE HAD AVOIDED IN A FEW PAST VISITS TO THE UK - WE WERE INTIMIDATED AND NOT SURE WHAT TO DO OR HOW TO NAVIGATE THE CITY. IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE THE TOUR ORGANIZED, EXPECIALLY FOR AN ACTIVE GROUP OF TOURISTS. LONDON'S JUXTAPOSITION OF HISTORICAL STRUCTURES AND NEW ARCHITECTURE, ALONG WITH THE CITY'S AND COUNTRY'S HISTORY IS INCREDIBLE. THE CITY IS VIBRANT AT NIGHT WITH LOTS TO DO – THEATERS AND CONCERTS. FREE TIME ALLOTED WAS JUST RIGHT.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"MY FAVORITE WOW MOMENT WAS VISITING WESTMINISTER ABBY AND SEEING THE CRYPTS OF VERY FAMOUS SCIENTISTS – IT GAVE ME SHIVERS (I'M A RETIRED SCIENTIST). ANOTHER WOW MOMENT, ALTHOUGH A BIT OF NEGATIVE, WAS SEEING THE ELGIN MARBLES IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM (I BELIEVE THEY NOW NEED TO BE REPATRIATED). A PLEASANT SURPRISE WAS STUMBLING UPON THE FEARLESS GIRL STATUE NEAR ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL."

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and December is a good time to visit London. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Summer has its advantages, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed). November and December offer fewer crowds and the festive fun of the holiday season.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's hotel is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your tour hotel in the Documents section of your tour account.

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of London's Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW) airports.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves London guidebook.
