Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to England

The beautiful medieval city of Canterbury is an easy train ride from central London — and the perfect jumping-off point for our Best of South England adventure. We'll meet at our hotel at 5 p.m. for a "Welcome to England" get-together. Then we'll take an evening walking tour along Canterbury's colorful lanes and get acquainted over dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Canterbury.

Day 2: Canterbury Cathedral

This morning we'll make our own little pilgrimage to the impressive Canterbury Cathedral, one of the most important churches in England. After touring the cathedral (and learning about the dramatic martyrdom of Thomas Becket), we'll meet with conservators who are tasked with preserving some of England's most treasured stone masonry and stained glass. After lunch you'll have some time to explore the historic layers of this pilgrimage city, finishing with a punt trip along the River Stour. Tonight is a perfect evening to enjoy an evensong performance at the cathedral.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Canterbury.

Day 3: Dover Castle and the White Cliffs

After breakfast, we'll meet our coach and driver and head to the White Cliffs and the imposing fortress of Dover Castle. We'll explore the Great Tower and Medieval Tunnels before entering the WWII-era Secret Wartime Tunnels (from which the British directed the perilous evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940). After lunch we'll take a short walk to explore the White Cliffs, famous for their geology and historic role. We'll return to Canterbury, where we'll have a beer tasting at a local brewery. The evening is yours to find a cozy restaurant for dinner.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2½ hours. Sleep in Canterbury.

Day 4: Battles and Beaches

Today we'll discover more of England's southeast coastline, beginning with a visit to Battle Abbey, the site of the Battle of Hastings. It was here in 1066 that the army of William the Conqueror invaded across the English Channel and killed King Harold, ushering in the Norman conquest of England. After lunch we'll stroll the South Downs Way for a view of England's famous white chalk cliffs at Beachy Head. We'll end our day peacefully, amidst the thatched roofs and timber-framed buildings of eastern Sussex.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in or near the village of Alfriston.

Day 5: The Great Ships of Portsmouth

This morning we'll drive to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for a day devoted to Britain's rich nautical history. You'll have a chance to tour HMS Victory, the warship of Admiral Lord Nelson that defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. We'll also visit the newly renovated Mary Rose Museum, built to showcase Henry VIII's sunken warship that was raised from the sea in the 1980s. You'll also have the opportunity for a look at traditional woodworking skills in action at the historic boat workshop. Late this afternoon we'll drive to Salisbury, where we'll enjoy an orientation followed by dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Salisbury.

Day 6: Soaring Salisbury Cathedral

We'll begin the day touring the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral, famous for its rich lore and towering Gothic spire. In addition, we'll visit the Chapter House, which is home to one of four original copies of the Magna Carta, the 1215 document that first established that everyone — even the king — was subject to the law. The remainder of the day is yours to explore more of this attractive town, including its lively local market and lovely riverside walks.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Salisbury.

Day 7: Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast

This morning we'll travel back in time with a visit to Stonehenge, where we'll learn about and ponder the origins of these iconic stones that are as old as the pyramids. Then we'll travel west to discover the natural beauty of the Jurassic Coast and its geologic formations, which date back 185 million years. Our day ends in the cozy village of Chagford — within Dartmoor National Park — where we'll enjoy dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Dartmoor National Park.

Day 8: Dartmoor National Park

Today we'll explore the natural wonders of Dartmoor National Park, home to wooded forests, desolate moors, and the prehistoric Merrivale stone rows. We'll learn about this compelling and varying landscape that inspired great literature, including The Hound of the Baskervilles, and have lunch together. This evening we'll enjoy a village church tour, followed by free time to enjoy one of Dartmoor's cozy country pubs.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dartmoor National Park.

Day 9: Castles and Cornwall

We'll drive into Cornwall today, known for its striking, wave-swept coast and charming fishing villages. Our first stop is a visit to the dramatic, cliff-hugging ruins of Tintagel Castle, long associated with King Arthur. After lunch, we'll continue our drive deeper into Cornwall and along its famed, rugged coastline. We'll end the day with dinner together and enjoy a performance of traditional Cornish folk music.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Mawgan Porth.

Day 10: Coastal Cornwall

Today we'll explore the wild and remote Cornish coast, home to rugged, windblown scenery and dotted with quaint fishing harbors and 19th-century Industrial Age ruins. We'll start our day with a scenic trek along grassy cliff tops, marveling at craggy rock formations and the crashing surf below. After lunch we'll visit a picturesque fishing village, where you can stroll the narrow lanes, poke around the shops and galleries, or grab some ice cream and people-watch at the beach. We'll return to our home village with time for some exploration and dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Mawgan Porth.

Day 11: St. Michael's Mount

We'll begin the day learning all about Cornwall's most famous culinary contribution — the pasty — with a demonstration (and sampling!) of how these traditional one-handed meals are made. Then we'll conquer St. Michael's Mount, the dramatic rock island first inhabited by monks more than 1,500 years ago. We'll have time to explore the castle and gardens — now a stately home — before returning to our home village for a free evening.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Mawgan Porth.

Day 12: Georgian Bath

This morning we'll head north to our final destination: the elegant Georgian city of Bath (a wonderful place to extend your England vacation — or easily pop back to London). After a walking tour and some free time, we'll enjoy a final dinner together and raise a hearty toast to our adventures. Cheers!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Bath.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Bath is an easy 90-minute train ride to central London, with connections to Heathrow and Gatwick airports. For those not yet ready to return home, Bath is a delightful city with many sightseeing options. Cheerio!

Roy was a fantastic tour guide, and his expertise in archaeology really shone in so many locations on the tour. I felt like their were a lot of military sites, but on the other hand they were interesting and educational. We had the best group of travelers of any of the six RS tours I’ve done.

Our tour of the Villages of South England was wonderful. Our group got along together very well, every one of them was a seasoned R/S traveler and knew what to expect, always on time, no grumps, interested and engaging people. Roy, our guide was a true historian and we really enjoyed hearing his explanations and descriptions of the various sites. His historical perspective was deep. He had a great sense of humor which is always fun.

"For me, the biggest Wow moment was seeing the ship the Mary Rose, which sunk in 1545 and was rediscovered in the 1980s. The actual ship remnants and the artifacts found inside were so well preserved. It gave a fantastic glimpse of life on a 16th century ship. For my husband it was talking with the with young people who are dedicating their professional life to preserving stained glass. For people so young and enthusiastic being responsible for 800 year old glass was truly inspiring."

It was a wonderful mix of history with REALLY beautiful scenery. Both Canterbury and Salisbury cathedrals were very interesting. Our guide, Steven, was very knowledgeable and helpful. We had a great group of fellow travelers. There was a nice balance of group touring and free time. All groups meals were great.

"I had a few highlights of the tour. I loved our walking around Dartmoor National Park and seeing the beautiful scenery but also the ancient stones still there. I really enjoyed Canterbury and having our hotel on the cathedral grounds was special. As a big “Doc Martin” fan, seeing Port Issac was fun."

Overall, the tour was fantastic - I was expecting incredible views of white cliffs, and in Cornwall, but was surprised at Devon and its views over hills, etc. Steven was a wonderful guide, always concerned that things were smooth, that we had what we needed and his commentary on the bus was a big part of the overall tour experience,

Excellent experience. This was my 3rd RS tour. Two couples caught Covid early and had to depart, leaving a smaller, more intimate group. Became 'family.' Our guide, Tom, was beyond wonderful. How he knows so much about so much is unbelievable! Would go anywhere with him. Good mix of together time with on-your-own time. Loved seeing the coast with all its history.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"CORNWALL! Everywhere in this lovely county was awesome. The rugged beauty of the coast cannot be put into words. The Brits and their dogs at every turn was delightful. I had more conversations with the locals than on any other tour. Seeing just how close Dover is to France brought a new meaning to WWII for me. As everyone states: too many to choose."

This tour was wonderful. We had not previously spent any time in the south of England, but were interested in exploring the rich history of the area. This tour really delivered on the history and culture. We also were interested in the varied landscapes which were breathtaking, especially Beachy Head and both the northern and southern coasts of Cornwall. Even the weather was agreeable with partly sunny to sunny days for most of the trip. There were a few brief rain showers but we just kept going

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Three wows: 1. Up close with stone masons on scaffolding and the roof of Canterbury Cathedral provided unique insight to the care needed to maintain buildings that are 900+ years old. 2. Salisbury Cathedral - one day a choir was practicing and the music coupled with the grand and glorious ambiance were almost overwhelming. 3. The coastline and villages and coves of Cornwall were dramatic and beautiful."

We were continually shown new and wonderful experience many of which were not on the original itinerary. Every day had unplanned sites and experiences including the touching Battle of Britain Memorial, Brookland's unique bell tower and Roman baptismal font, the unexpected arrival of Morris Dancers at Stonehenge, visiting Port Isaac (the fictional home of Doc Martin) plus many, many more.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Totally unexpected was our stone mason tour at Canterbury Cathedral. We were shown how the replacement blocks, grotesques and gargoyles were carved. We then were allowed to go up ten stories on scaffolding to actually see where these pieces would be placed in the Cathedrals twin towers. We were shown previous work completed on the flying buttresses."

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We enjoyed the presentation by the stone masons at the Canterbury Cathedral. First they explained how they are replacing damaged stones by making replacements to look exactly as the old stone was originally. The masons need to be a bit of a historian to be successful. After that we went to the top of the scaffolding to see the actual stone work they have done. It is beautiful, incredible craftsmanship. An amazing experience. It turns out that these stone masons are a bit engineer too."

It was a terrific tour of parts of England I had not already seen. My enthusiasm may have been tempered a bit by a knee problem I had during the trip and the fact that I had already visited Canterbury and Salisbury years ago (but I was glad to see them again to refresh my memory).

This tour delivered as promised with some bonuses. Somehow, having to work around the queen's funeral resulted in our seeing more rather than less. The guide (John) was very good and the group experienced and able to flex.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is our fifth RS tour - there is never just one such moment. Some notable moments were going to the top of the scaffolding on the Canterbury Cathedral and walking on the roof (we all commented this would never be allowed at home), seeing the cliffs at Beachy Head, and almost anywhere on the coast of Cornwall. In a much different way, walking where Romans walked at the Roman Baths in Bath was amazing and interesting and sobering. The stones in Dartmoor were more interesting than Stonehenge."

This tour was fine and I really enjoyed our tour guide, Steven. I have to say, though, that this really didn't feel like a Rick Steves' tour. One of the reasons I have enjoyed the Rick Steves' tours is because of the coordination of local guides and museum guides that help to bring the history and art alive, and there's an ability to interact with these guides to have an a more fulfilling experience. This tour did not provides these guides, and I was disappointed.

Perhaps we were lucky to be in the most compatible group of 24 possible. This group became closer than family, ( I have family members that I would never travel with), it was a Team, a band of brothers and sisters, people helping each other out and caring and sharing. We had a great guide, Steven, who made every effort to make the tour go well. And again, perhaps luck, we had the best weather possible. I recommend traveling Southern England in September.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are two "wow" moments. We were in England during the mourning/funeral of Queen Elizabeth and as the events unfolded we experienced a national/historic event, first hand. We gathered in our hotel as a group and watched the funeral, and in unison, stood in silence during "God Save the KIng" Gulp WOW! Wow #2 -The half mile walk from our hotel to/from the village of Lizard each morning and evening, viewing the southern most point of the English coast in beautiful idyllic Cornwall, again WOW!"

I enjoyed the tour very much and the slower pace. Regardless, I enjoyed the tour overall.

"Pretty much everything. I woke up every day excited about what was coming next. That said, I was especially thrilled to be in Cornwall (I'm a lifelong Daphne Du Maurier fan), and to visit Tintagel Castle (likewise, a King Arthur buff). Being in England when the Queen died, and to see the tributes everywhere we traveled, provided us with an unexpected, poignant experience. Robert did a wonderful, impromptu job of talking meaningfully about the life of the queen, and what she has meant to Britain."

I originally planned to take this trip in 2020, it as well worth the wait. My mother's family is half Cornish (Gold seekers in 1850) which is why I am a 5th generation Californian. The other half was from Enfield, England. I have been to many places in the world both for leisure and for a 50 year career but I had never been to Britain. 1066 was with me continually growing up and I had always wanted to experience the feeling of being where the world changed. It was a great tour.

The tour was a fantastic experience. Our guide, John, was very knowledgeable in history, geography and politics. Our tour group was a congenial one, representing many areas of the US. It was probably the most physically demanding R/S tour we've taken - offering beautiful scenery, breathtaking views, many challenging trails.

Very happy with everything, checked a lot of boxes of my bucket list. By luck we were in Canterbury Cathedral on our 25th wedding anniversary and was able to manage a vow renewal... amazing! First and foremost, the UK Tour was an outstanding value! The guide, Steven, was energetic, positive, and very well versed on the history. His narration of each day was impeccable! We always had a history lesson of the sites and villages visited. He was very well spoken, and really seemed to care about our comfort. In addition, the bus driver, Lucash (didn't catch the last name) was funny and really provided an efficient and lovely ride in the coach!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Stonehenge. Steve Back and Lucash got us to the site as early as possible to avoid the crowds. What a remarkable site! The other wow moment was Dartmoor National Park. I personally LOVE being outdoors, and love to camp in our RV! Dartmoor wanted me to want to come back to the UK to explore all the National Parks! Does Rick Steves have a UK national park tour? If not, highly recommend! The other wow day was of Portsmouth, and seeing the Mary Rose! Wish we had more time to enjoy!"

The tour emphasis on curiosity, learning, and local culture was just what I hoped for. Among them was a tour of Lizard Point Lighthouse, where we just happened to take the last tour of the final day of tours in 2022, and we were the last people to see the brilliantly lit multi-faceted prism mirrors in the lighthouse before they are removed and will be replaced with a halogen bulb."

This is my third Rick Steve's tour and it exceeded my expectations. For those of you who think England has terrible food you need to adjust your opinion. The food was much better than I expected. Just avoid the blood pudding on your full English breakfast. It is also wonderful to travel to a country where you speak the same language.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I can't just pick one. I loved meeting the lady who has a bakery business and who showed us how to make pasties. I also loved meeting the stone masons at Canterbury cathedral and going up on the scaffolding to take in the incredible view. These events could only happen on a Rick Steve's tour."

It has been a dream since childhood to travel to England, and Rick Steves' Europe did not disappoint. It was everything I could have imagined. Loved the itinerary. So many monumental historic places. Our weather was fantastic. 75 and sunny day after day -- in England! The food was fantastic -- in England! Our tour group was companionable and easy to be with. Our very small number (16? 17?) made traveling together very easy. Lots of bus room. One thing that concerned us was that we doubt that we got 1/2 our dinners. I think the first week we only had the first night dinner together.

I loved this tour. It fulfilled all my expectations. The fact that we had sunny days throughout didn't hurt either. I am a history buff, especially English history. The concentration of amazing sights and activities, the guide, and the people made this tour the best 2 weeks of my life. Several of the first-timers in our group asked us if this was a typical RS tour and our common response (along with others) - "If this was our first RS tour, I don't know if I would do another". Favorite "WOW" moment

"Southern England with it rolling hills, with lush crops and the rugged coastline dotted with castles and ancient as well has contemporary history was a 'wow' moment from the start of the trip to its conclusion! I guess running into & having a drink with Mark Williams of Harry Potter fame and Father Brown could be considered a 'wow' as well!."

When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit England. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summer has its advantages, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of London's Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW) airports, and take a train or bus to Canterbury (where the tour begins) and from Bath (where the tour ends). Trains are available to and from central London. Both Heathrow and Gatwick airports are served direct by National Express coach (schedules are available at the National Express website).

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options to get to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves England guidebook.
