Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to England

The beautiful medieval city of Canterbury is an easy train ride from central London — and the perfect jumping-off point for our Best of South England adventure. We'll meet at our hotel at 5 p.m. for a "Welcome to England" get-together. Then we'll take an evening walking tour along Canterbury's colorful lanes and get acquainted over dinner.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Canterbury.

Day 2: Canterbury Cathedral

This morning we'll make our own little pilgrimage to the impressive Canterbury Cathedral, one of the most important churches in England. After touring the cathedral (and learning about the dramatic martyrdom of Thomas Becket), we'll meet with conservators who are tasked with preserving some of England's most treasured stone masonry and stained glass. After lunch you'll have some time to explore the historic layers of this pilgrimage city, finishing with a punt trip along the River Stour. Tonight is a perfect evening to enjoy an evensong performance at the cathedral.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Canterbury.

Day 3: Dover Castle and the White Cliffs

After breakfast, we'll meet our coach and driver and head to the White Cliffs and the imposing fortress of Dover Castle. We'll explore the Great Tower and Medieval Tunnels before entering the WWII-era Secret Wartime Tunnels (from which the British directed the perilous evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940). After lunch we'll take a short walk to explore the White Cliffs, famous for their geology and historic role. We'll return to Canterbury, where we'll have a beer tasting at a local brewery. The evening is yours to find a cozy restaurant for dinner.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2½ hours. Sleep in Canterbury.

Day 4: Battles and Beaches

Today we'll discover more of England's southeast coastline, beginning with a visit to Battle Abbey, the site of the Battle of Hastings. It was here in 1066 that the army of William the Conqueror invaded across the English Channel and killed King Harold, ushering in the Norman conquest of England. After lunch we'll stroll the South Downs Way for a view of England's famous white chalk cliffs at Beachy Head. We'll end our day peacefully, amidst the thatched roofs and timber-framed buildings of eastern Sussex.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in or near the village of Alfriston.

Day 5: The Great Ships of Portsmouth

This morning we'll drive to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for a day devoted to Britain's rich nautical history. You'll have a chance to tour HMS Victory, the warship of Admiral Lord Nelson that defeated the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. We'll also visit the newly renovated Mary Rose Museum, built to showcase Henry VIII's sunken warship that was raised from the sea in the 1980s. You'll also have the opportunity for a look at traditional woodworking skills in action at the historic boat workshop. Late this afternoon we'll drive to Salisbury, where we'll enjoy an orientation followed by dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Salisbury.

Day 6: Soaring Salisbury Cathedral

We'll begin the day touring the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral, famous for its rich lore and towering Gothic spire. In addition, we'll visit the Chapter House, which is home to one of four original copies of the Magna Carta, the 1215 document that first established that everyone — even the king — was subject to the law. The remainder of the day is yours to explore more of this attractive town, including its lively local market and lovely riverside walks.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Salisbury.

Day 7: Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast

This morning we'll travel back in time with a visit to Stonehenge, where we'll learn about and ponder the origins of these iconic stones that are as old as the pyramids. Then we'll travel west to discover the natural beauty of the Jurassic Coast and its geologic formations, which date back 185 million years. Our day ends in the cozy village of Chagford — within Dartmoor National Park — where we'll enjoy dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Dartmoor National Park.

Day 8: Dartmoor National Park

Today we'll explore the natural wonders of Dartmoor National Park, home to wooded forests, desolate moors, and the prehistoric Merrivale stone rows. We'll learn about this compelling and varying landscape that inspired great literature, including The Hound of the Baskervilles, and have lunch together. This evening we'll enjoy a village church tour, followed by free time to enjoy one of Dartmoor's cozy country pubs.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dartmoor National Park.

Day 9: Castles and Cornwall

We'll drive into Cornwall today, known for its striking, wave-swept coast and charming fishing villages. Our first stop is a visit to the dramatic, cliff-hugging ruins of Tintagel Castle, long associated with King Arthur. After lunch, we'll continue our drive deeper into Cornwall and along its famed, rugged coastline. We'll end the day with dinner together and enjoy a performance of traditional Cornish folk music.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Mawgan Porth.

Day 10: Coastal Cornwall

Today we'll explore the wild and remote Cornish coast, home to rugged, windblown scenery and dotted with quaint fishing harbors and 19th-century Industrial Age ruins. We'll start our day with a scenic trek along grassy cliff tops, marveling at craggy rock formations and the crashing surf below. After lunch we'll visit a picturesque fishing village, where you can stroll the narrow lanes, poke around the shops and galleries, or grab some ice cream and people-watch at the beach. We'll return to our home village with time for some exploration and dinner on your own.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Mawgan Porth.

Day 11: St. Michael's Mount

We'll begin the day learning all about Cornwall's most famous culinary contribution — the pasty — with a demonstration (and sampling!) of how these traditional one-handed meals are made. Then we'll conquer St. Michael's Mount, the dramatic rock island first inhabited by monks more than 1,500 years ago. We'll have time to explore the castle and gardens — now a stately home — before returning to our home village for a free evening.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Mawgan Porth.

Day 12: Georgian Bath

This morning we'll head north to our final destination: the elegant Georgian city of Bath (a wonderful place to extend your England vacation — or easily pop back to London). After a walking tour and some free time, we'll enjoy a final dinner together and raise a hearty toast to our adventures. Cheers!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Bath.

Day 13: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Bath is an easy 90-minute train ride to central London, with connections to Heathrow and Gatwick airports. For those not yet ready to return home, Bath is a delightful city with many sightseeing options. Cheerio!

I have been on several group tours both in the US and Europe. This was by far the best experience. Everything went extremely well. There were no long days on the bus, hotels were pleasant and quaint. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It was especially nice when we visited the historical sights that we didn’t have long waits due to the pre-planning. Our tour guide was THE BEST! And the skills of our driver almost unbelievable. I highly recommend this tour.

"I never thought that I would ever get to see Stonehenge. When we were walking up to the site, I was overwhelmed with emotion. You see pictures, watch videos, read about it, but seeing it in person was beyond my expectations."

This was our first ever coach tour and we were unsure if we would enjoy it - but it exceeded all our expectations and we can't wait to do another Rick Steves' tour! Everything was very well organised, the guide was knowledgable and kind, accommodations were unique and lovely, and the sites we visited and experienced were amazing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Honestly it is challenging to pick just one, as there was at least one "WOW" moment per day! From Roman ruins, medieval buildings and stunning cathedrals to spectacular white cliffs and beautiful rugged ocean coastlines and beaches. But if I must choose, it was a unique one: we had the opportunity to watch the King and Queen's Coronation in Salisbury Cathedral! We were so fortunate that our tour schedule accommodated this historic event and allowed us to participate if we wished."

This was more laid-back than previous Rick Steves tours we have been on - things were pretty low-key. I think this is in part just because of the areas visited which were lovely (especially Canterbury and Cornwall) but themselves pretty quiet. England is always beautiful in the spring (green and yellow fields, many lambs) and we learned a lot.

An outstanding itinerary with a fun and well-informed guide, this was my 9th RS tour, it was even better than what I imagined. Helen, John’s assistant, also from the Southern coast of England, provided a humorous counterpoint in her support of the Monarchy. John said he is a Republican. Their deep knowledge of the history and culture of England added color and texture. I vote for jam first then clotted cream on my scone, the Cornish way (Queen Elizabeth II’s choice)! New friends, too!

So many charming villages, a warm friendly group of travelers and fun guides topped off a dream trip!"

It was a terrific tour of parts of England I had not already seen. My enthusiasm may have been tempered a bit by a knee problem I had during the trip and the fact that I had already visited Canterbury and Salisbury years ago (but I was glad to see them again to refresh my memory).

The tour was well planned and adjusted as needed to accommodate the queen’s funeral.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We enjoyed the presentation by the stone masons at the Canterbury Cathedral. First they explained how they are replacing damaged stones by making replacements to look exactly as the old stone was originally. The masons need to be a bit of a historian to be successful. After that we went to the top of the scaffolding to see the actual stone work they have done. It is beautiful, incredible craftsmanship. An amazing experience. It turns out that these stone masons are a bit engineer too."

This tour delivered as promised with some bonuses. Somehow, having to work around the queen's funeral resulted in our seeing more rather than less. The guide (John) was very good and the group experienced and able to flex.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is our fifth RS tour - there is never just one such moment. Some notable moments were going to the top of the scaffolding on the Canterbury Cathedral and walking on the roof (we all commented this would never be allowed at home), seeing the cliffs at Beachy Head, and almost anywhere on the coast of Cornwall. In a much different way, walking where Romans walked at the Roman Baths in Bath was amazing and interesting and sobering. The stones in Dartmoor were more interesting than Stonehenge."

We traveled with a very low-key group of fellow adventurers, which always sets a positive tone for a trip. Fortunately, we also had stellar weather. The scenery was spectacular and there was a near-perfect mix of touring historic sites and time to explore on my own. Steven is a remarkably warm, knowledgeable and patient guide. Overall, the trip was a wonderful and enriching experience.

This tour was fine and I really enjoyed our tour guide, Steven. I have to say, though, that this really didn't feel like a Rick Steves' tour. One of the reasons I have enjoyed the Rick Steves' tours is because of the coordination of local guides and museum guides that help to bring the history and art alive, and there's an ability to interact with these guides to have an a more fulfilling experience. This tour did not provides these guides, and I was disappointed.

I enjoyed the tour very much and the slower pace. I felt that there was a mix of busy days and slower days which I think was helpful, but some of the days which were slower felt that there weren't enough options in the villages we were staying in to fill time. Regardless, I enjoyed the tour overall.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Didn't really have a wow moment on this tour unfortunately. Ironically, it was taking time on the day of the Queen's funeral to watch the event together at our hotel in Chagford, but that was an extraordinary circumstance I'd say."

This tour took place during the unexpected period of national mourning for Queen Elizabeth II. Steven did a wonderful job of adjusting our itinerary as things changed daily. Perhaps we were lucky to be in the most compatible group of 24 possible. This group became closer than family, ( I have family members that I would never travel with), it was a Team, a band of brothers and sisters, people helping each other out and caring and sharing. We had a great guide, Steven, who made every effort to make the tour go well. And again, perhaps luck, we had the best weather possible. I recommend traveling Southern England in September.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are two "wow" moments. We were in England during the mourning/funeral of Queen Elizabeth and as the events unfolded we experienced a national/historic event, first hand. We gathered in our hotel as a group and watched the funeral, and in unison, stood in silence during "God Save the KIng" Gulp WOW! Wow #2 -The half mile walk from our hotel to/from the village of Lizard each morning and evening, viewing the southern most point of the English coast in beautiful idyllic Cornwall, again WOW!"

"Loved being Canterbury Cathedral and docents, but especially being lifted on the side of the building with stone masons explaining their work. From the first moment we met up as a group, under the wonderful leadership of Robert, I was happy, happy, happy. Everyone was friendly, we all got along well. No grumps here! The selection of activities was exciting, varied and fun. I liked the mix of group togetherness time, with time on our own to explore, as well as the variety of indoor/outdoor activities. I've never much liked traveling by bus, but the rides were kept pretty short, and Keith was a great driver and addition to the group.

"Pretty much everything. I woke up every day excited about what was coming next. That said, I was especially thrilled to be in Cornwall (I'm a lifelong Daphne Du Maurier fan), and to visit Tintagel Castle (likewise, a King Arthur buff). Being in England when the Queen died, and to see the tributes everywhere we traveled, provided us with an unexpected, poignant experience. Robert did a wonderful, impromptu job of talking meaningfully about the life of the queen, and what she has meant to Britain."

Our guide Robert was just outstanding. He had an intimate understanding of England as it is today and as it was hundreds of years ago. I originally planned to take this trip in 2020, it as well worth the wait. My mother's family is half Cornish (Gold seekers in 1850) which is why I am a 5th generation Californian. The other half was from Enfield, England. I have been to many places in the world both for leisure and for a 50 year career but I had never been to Britain. 1066 was with me continually growing up and I had always wanted to experience the feeling of being where the world changed. First and foremost, the UK Tour was an outstanding value! The guide, Steven, was energetic, positive, and very well versed on the history. His narration of each day was impeccable! We always had a history lesson of the sites and villages visited. He was very well spoken, and really seemed to care about our comfort. In addition, the bus driver, Lucash (didn't catch the last name) was funny and really provided an efficient and lovely ride in the coach!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Stonehenge. Steve Back and Lucash got us to the site as early as possible to avoid the crowds. What a remarkable site! The other wow moment was Dartmoor National Park. I personally LOVE being outdoors, and love to camp in our RV! Dartmoor wanted me to want to come back to the UK to explore all the National Parks! Does Rick Steves have a UK national park tour? If not, highly recommend! The other wow day was of Portsmouth, and seeing the Mary Rose! Wish we had more time to enjoy!"

Loved the itinerary. So many monumental historic places. Our weather was fantastic. 75 and sunny day after day -- in England! The food was fantastic -- in England! Our tour group was companionable and easy to be with. Our very small number (16? 17?) made traveling together very easy. Lots of bus room. One thing that concerned us was that we doubt that we got 1/2 our dinners. I think the first week we only had the first night dinner together.

This tour was my first ever and it was a wonderful experience. The concentration of amazing sights and activities, the guide, and the people made this tour the best 2 weeks of my life. I can't believe the number of incredible experiences that were packed into 13 days; each day was its own small universe, and I'll spend a lifetime unraveling the sensory feast I experienced. The tour is a perfect balance of activity and downtime, as well as being wonderfully educational. I learned more in 2 weeks with Tom than I could have living here by myself for a year.

"Without saying “the entire tour,” which is my honest answer, I found the English countryside particularly striking. Traveling from Beachy Head to the village of Alfriston and wandering the veins of footpaths near the village generated spectacular scenery and breathtaking wonderment. Cornwall was a special culturally immersive experience in itself. Tom, being Cornish, created a magical and inimitable experience for us here through the scenery, history, lore, food, language, and music."

This was a great introduction to why taking a tour is so wonderful. Terrific itinerary, great guide and driver (Deborah and David), so much more experienced than I could have accomplished for myself. As a single person, I enjoyed the company of the other travelers, and appreciated their travel stories as well.

"Probably the live concert we attended at Salisbury Cathedral (their first since before COVID), with a live orchestra, music by Elgar and Holst, plus a world premiere and hearing God Save The Queen sung by 1000 people."

The tour guide was a great group to spend two weeks with. The pace of the tour was just what I wanted. I was able to see rural England. Small villages, lovely ancient refurbished small hotels. The beachheads. The history, without going through enormous museums.

This was our 7th RS tour. Most in our group had also taken several previous RS tours. Several of the first-timers in our group asked us if this was a typical RS tour and our common response (along with others) - "If this was our first RS tour, I don't know if I would do another". The tour itinerary needs to be reworked ( less time at Beachy Head and much more time in Alfriston, way too much time in Chagford - 2 nights and an afternoon - perhaps spend time in Exeter and add time in Bath)

Other than knowing we would see some cathedrals and coastal villages, we really didn’t know what to expect. Each cathedral was different and inspiring. Each village/town was quaint, often historic and/or medieval, and the sea coast views were stunning!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We were in Bath, sitting on a bench in a square in front of the magnificent Bath Abbey, listening to a guitar player, eating ice cream while chatting with a British woman who attended Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. It was a classic Rick Steves’ moment and we bought a CD from the musician so we could relive that memory at home."

Wonderful experience. Extremely small group--16--of friendly individuals who loved to travel and whose presence enhanced the tour experience. Our guide was friendly, knowledgable, and well-organized. Excellent experience. Some of the hotels were a little quirky but they all worked and I slept well. The meals and tour were outstanding. The guide, Dedorah, was knowledgeable and helpful. In the end the testing went smoothly since a testing center was near the last hotel. That should be a factor in choosing last hotels.

I thought this tour might be a little less exciting compared to our RS Italy, Spain,Greece tours, was I ever wrong, This tour contained such varied and amazing experiences it was astonishing. The beautiful countryside, the wild coast, the castles, the villages, all the history. This was my 8th Rick Steves tour and it may be my favorite so far! While I might attribute this to the sunny dry, weather we had over the 2 weeks, our brilliant guide Deborah deserves most of the credit. We stayed in a wonderful mix of historically significant towns and charming villages, and the hotels -- while characteristically quirky in a Rick Steves kind of way -- were all comfortable. The tour is very active and offers a set of intimate experiences that only a RS tour can offer.

Our tour guide was very clear and a good communicator who had researched all aspects of the trip and was ready to go. She was very attentive to every member of the group and gave good advice for free time as well. Our driver was superb! He was ready and able. Safe and professional. Hotel rooms were clean and adequate. Hotel staff friendly. Toilets were temperamental. Masks were worn by all on the bus only due to the insistence of our guide. not so off the bus. unless reminded in confined s

Overall, it was an interesting and enjoyable tour. I love England so seeing anything new there is fun for me. When To Go & Weather

Any time between April and October is a good time to visit England. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summer has its advantages, with long days and the best weather (though never guaranteed).
