Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to the Netherlands
We'll start in quintessentially Dutch Haarlem, a quick train, bus, or taxi ride from the Amsterdam airport. We'll meet at our hotel at 3 p.m. for an orientation and chance to get acquainted, followed by a walking tour of this charming town and a traditional rijsttafel dinner together. We'll toast the start of our adventure together with a tasting of the typical spirit of the Netherlands, Jenever. Prost!
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Haarlem.
Day 2: Progressive, Artistic Amsterdam
This morning we'll hop aboard the train into Amsterdam and hit the ground walking with an informative tour of Amsterdam's historic streets, gaining an insider's perspective to this progressive and artistic city. Then we'll enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the centuries-old canals, lined with teetering, gable-topped houses. After a break for lunch, we'll take a guided tour of the remarkable Rijksmuseum, featuring masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Afterward, you'll have free time to visit the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House (reserve online, well in advance!), or whatever strikes your fancy. Your evening is free for more adventures in Amsterdam or back in Haarlem. Dinner is on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Train: 1 hour. Boat: 1 hour. No bus. Sleep in Haarlem.
Day 3: Dutch Treats and Rhine Views
We'll travel to Arnhem's open-air museum this morning to see what life was like in this corner of Europe centuries ago. We'll wander among the quaint houses, village storefronts, working windmills, and round off our Dutch experiences with a traditional pancake lunch together. Then we'll work our way down to Germany's castle-studded Rhineland, enjoying dinner together at our half-timbered hotel nestled in the medieval village of Bacharach on the Rhine.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Bacharach.
Day 4: Rhine Castles and a River Cruise
This morning, we'll take a walking tour of Bacharach with an entertaining local guide. Afterward, at nearby St. Goar, we'll hike up the hill to tour the mighty medieval Rheinfels Castle and enjoy its commanding view of the Rhine Valley. We'll then board a boat for a relaxing Rhine River cruise, passing picturesque villages and feudal castles, followed by free time for dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Bacharach.
Day 5: Medieval Rothenburg
We'll get an early start today, arriving in Rothenburg, Germany's best-preserved medieval town, just before lunchtime. After a helpful orientation tour, the afternoon is yours to see the best woodcarving in Germany (Riemenschneider's altarpiece), walk the medieval wall, tour the Crime and Punishment Museum, or hunt down the best apple strudel in town. This evening we'll tag along on the Night Watchman's tour.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Rothenburg.
Day 6: Dachau and Austria's Tirol
Today we'll make a 21st-century pilgrimage to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial near Munich, where we'll learn powerful lessons about the Holocaust and World War II. We'll then drive across the Bavarian countryside to visit Germany's greatest Rococo-style church, the Wieskirche. Winding our way toward Austria, we'll arrive at our rural Tirolean guest house in time for a traditional dinner.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep near Reutte.
Day 7: Neuschwanstein and a Luge
It's a short drive and a half-hour hike to "Mad" King Ludwig's deservedly famous Neuschwanstein Castle. We'll tour the castle (when available) and have time for lunch. Afterward, you can barrel down the Tegelberg summer luge track (weather permitting). This afternoon you'll be free to visit another nearby castle, take a stroll in the countryside, or just relax at our peaceful hotel before dinner on your own.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep near Reutte.
Day 8: Italy's Incomparable Venice
We'll take a scenic, all-day drive to Venice today, stopping en route for lunch together in a characteristic Italian-Tirolean village. In Venice, we'll park our bus and board a vaporetto boat for a Grand Canal ride to our hotel in the historic heart of this seductive city. Tonight we'll take an alleys-and-canals orientation stroll to our first Italian dinner together. Afterward your guide will organize an optional gondola ride for a uniquely Venetian experience. If the moon is out, it will hit your eye like a big pizza pie.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Venice.
Day 9: The Art of Wandering in Venice
This morning our local guide will take us on a winding walking tour through Venice, blending historic and modern-day stories of this one-of-a-kind treasure and giving us a local's perspective on Venice's fascinating past…and its uncertain future. We'll finish our morning walk in St. Mark's Square. The rest of your day is free to visit the mosaic and marble-filled St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, or the Titian- and Tintoretto-packed Accademia art gallery. Better yet, get lost (remember, it's an island) exploring the alleys, cruising the canals, and "crawling" the pubs.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus (too much water). Sleep in Venice.
Day 10: Florence and Michelangelo's David
An early morning vaporetto ride will reunite us with our bus and driver. We'll drive straight to Florence and hop on board a tram to our hotel in the city's historic center. We'll meet our local guide for a Renaissance tour and learn about Brunelleschi's magnificent cathedral dome, Ghiberti's Baptistery doors, and other creations that helped define this world-changing era. We'll end our walk at the Accademia Gallery to marvel at works of sculptural genius: Michelangelo's rough-hewn Prisoners and his greatest masterpiece, David. Afterward, we'll have dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Boat: ½ hour. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Florence.
Day 11: Wonders of Renaissance Florence
This morning is on your own. You can sleep in, get an early start and scramble to the top of Brunelleschi's dome, or browse through Florence's colorful food and craft markets. After lunch, we'll tour the wealth of Botticellis, Leonardos, and Raphaels in the greatest collection of Italian paintings anywhere — the Uffizi Gallery. This evening is free to make your own discoveries.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Florence.
Day 12: A Walk Through Caesar's Rome
All roads lead to Rome, and this morning it's a straight drive into the heart of the city. After getting oriented to our neighborhood and break for lunch, we'll travel back in time, as a local guide takes us on a walking tour through the ancient heart of Rome, telling us vivid tales on a stroll around the outside of the monumental Colosseum and into the history-drenched Roman Forum ending with the spectacular Pantheon. After dinner, we'll regroup to celebrate la dolce vita Roman-style, with an evening stroll through the floodlit heart of the city, lacing together lively campos, classy piazzas, and the splashy Trevi Fountain.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Rome.
Day 13: St. Peter's Basilica
This morning a local expert will introduce us to Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, and the greatest church in Christendom: the awe-inspiring St. Peter's Basilica, home to Michelangelo's sublime Pietà. You'll be set free before lunch time to explore more of the Eternal City on your own, step into the nearby Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, return to the Colosseum and tour the interior, or soak up more of Rome’s artistic, historic, and cultural heritage (don’t forget to taste some refreshing gelato along the way).
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Rome.
Day 14: To Italy's Cinque Terre
We'll drive along Italy's west coast today, with a refreshing stop at an enchanting hill town. This afternoon's destination is the dramatic Cinque Terre: five perfectly preserved fishing villages, laced together with hiking paths that meander between vineyards and the deep blue sea. As we approach the Cinque Terre, we'll park our bus and take a short train ride into seaside Monterosso al Mare. Tonight we'll gather together for a feast of local specialties, from homemade pesto to the fresh catch of the day.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Train: ¼ hour. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Monterosso al Mare.
Day 15: Free Day in the Cinque Terre
Ahh, it's time to take a "vacation from your vacation" today in our Mediterranean getaway. Pick a Cinque Terre village and spend your day exploring the stairways and alleyways, sunning yourself on the rocks, or sipping a cappuccino and catching up on your journal at an outdoor café. Or, if you're looking for lots of exercise, fresh air, and panoramic views, start your day early and hike the cliffside paths that connect the towns.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Monterosso al Mare.
Day 16: To the Heart of the Swiss Alps
Today we'll catch an early train back to our bus and head over the hills, past the farms and pristine lakes of northern Italy, and into the alpine wonderland of Switzerland. After a breathtaking drive into the very heart of the Swiss Alps, we'll arrive at our creaky chalet in the magnificent Lauterbrunnen Valley, where we'll have dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Train: ¼ hour. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Day 17: Free Day in the Alps
The day is all yours to enjoy some of Europe's most dramatic scenery. You may consider a mountain excursion that combines a narrow-gauge railway, a gondola lift, and a spectacular alpine walk above the tree line, surrounded by a panorama of cut-glass peaks…or ride a gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and hike down…or wander through the valley and walk to the thundering Trümmelbach Falls, a unique set of waterfalls encased behind the valley walls.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Day 18: A Hearty Taste of Burgundy
Today we'll say auf Wiedersehen to the Alps and bonjour to la belle France. We'll drive into profoundly French Burgundy for a look at small-town France. We'll have an orientation walk through the heart of Burgundy's inviting wine capital, Beaune, visit the famous Hôtel Dieu medieval hospital, and enjoy a wine tasting together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Beaune.
Day 19: Historic and Neighborhood Paris
This morning we'll drive straight to Paris, where you'll have an orientation to the neighborhood markets and cafés to find lunch on your own. After checking into our nearby hotel, we'll have a transportation lesson and Métro ride to the historic heart of Paris: the Ile de la Cité, where we'll meet our local guide and take a stroll through the city's early history. We'll continue on to the bohemian Latin Quarter and two of the world's most important Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Your evening is free for dinner and more discoveries.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Paris.
Day 20: Parisian Cityscapes and Masterpieces
This day provides a busy, star-studded finale for our tour. We'll start with a visit to the magnificent Louvre Museum. With the Rick Steves Audio Europe™ app in hand, Rick's voice will guide you through the Louvre's timeless treasures, including Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. The rest of the day is yours to round out your Paris sightseeing with a visit to museums like the Orsay and Rodin, or perhaps a walk down the Champs-Elysées — the choices are endless. This evening we'll have our final dinner together, sharing memories and toasting our newly made friends. Salut!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.
Day 21: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. If you're staying on in Paris, today would be a great day to hop on the train and tackle the sprawling palace and grounds at Versailles. If you're headed home, it's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Au revoir!
(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

This was the most incredible vacation of my life, and I'm already planning for the next Rick Steves tour. Our tour guide (Joe) was so good, itinerary, food, experiences, bus driver, and other tour group members were all excellent. Honestly, just such an amazing experience!

"This is a hard one because there were so many. However, if I had to pick one, it was the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland. This might be because I didn't have any expectations for Switzerland, however, the natural beauty and peacefulness of Lauterbrunnen completely blew me away. I'm so glad this "gem" was included in the tour itinerary. "

The planning and execution were flawless. There were remarkably few times when we had to adjust on the fly. The mix of activities was excellent and it was a great introduction to travel in Europe. It was a long and strenuous journey. Southern Europe simply does not have adequate cooling inside for July. Many buildings (and hotel rooms) were hot with no fans to even move the air. Being from Houston, we expected some of this but not being able to sleep was not a great combo.

From start to finish, this tour was everything we had hoped for. It was great to leave the planning and logistics to RS Tours and just relax and enjoy all the planned fun activities. All of the hotel accommodations met or exceeded our expectations, our bus driver Richard provided us with an immaculate bus that made the travel days enjoyable, and both our RS guide (Paul) and all of the local guides brought the history of the places we visited alive in a way that was just awesome.

"The view from our hotel in Murren, Switzerland. Perched in the Alps with a full view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley was both awe-inspiring and breathtaking. Heading to the top of Schilthorn the next day was simply amazing: the gondola rides to get there, the panoramic views of many of the famous summits in the Alps, the thrill walk, the James Bond experience.....everything about that tour stop was full of "wow"."

It was a first experience with Rick Steves tours and it was amazing! Our tour guide, Paul and bus driver, Richard set the bar high. The group we were with came together and had tons of fun, laughs and wow moments. The countries we went to in the best of Europe was perfect since it was my very first trip to Europe. We couldn’t have asked for a better experienced and trip than this one. The places, the tours, the tour guides, the food….a trip of a lifetime!

First of all, Paul corkin was one of the top four guides I've had. This is my ninth Rick Steve's tour. He ranks up with Steven in Ireland, Patrick in France and our very first. Julie in Italy. Outstanding job. Had to tolerate occasional frustrated travelers but mostly our group was good too. His teaching skills and teaching background clearly show through. I can't say enough about him.

Our guide Ragen was an excellent combination of shepherd with a firm but gentle shepherds crook, contagious spirit of enthusiasm, and walking tour book. He seems to have worked with Rick Steves long enough to pick up part of his enduring personality. He was a reassuring presence and fellow traveler. At times, he was able to show his personal side of one who lives life and travel. I feel fortunate that he was our guide for our 49th wedding anniversary tour.

Our guide Joe (calm, fun and very knowledgeable) was absolutely excellent and we enjoyed our driver John (very jolly) as well. The individual Rick Steves city guides were top notch giving us personal insight into their beloved cities. The 21 day Europe tour allowed us to visit 6 countries, learn different cultures and meet new friends. We added 2 days at the beginning and enjoyed some extra time in Haarlem and Amsterdam. Added 4 days at the end to immerse ourselves in the Paris scene.

"Frankly our WOW moment was in Murren, Switzerland with our team surrounding my wife and I on the gondola rides removing our fear of height. Our team was our tour guide along with 25 tour strangers who became acquaintances and now we can call them our friends. Our team meals were also great as we got to break some bread, selected beverages and deserts with our new found friends while developing deeper relationships with fun conversations."

Where to begin? Having watched a number of TV episodes on PBS, I was excited to see places I had seen Rick visit and the tour did not disappoint... six countries, 10 major cities, culture, history, art/architecture, new friends... we saw it all and more and it was wonderful the entire time. I was a little physically unprepared for the demands of the tour and struggled a bit, but I would not quit nor trade the experience for anything. Thank you for making dreams come true! It was magnificent!

"A first view of the Alps and the Eiffel Tower, a clifftop view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley with the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau in front of me, to see the Adriatic and Mediterranean, and eating delicious escargot in France... but the most memorable moment was the seafood feast in Monterosso - pesto pasta and then deliciousness poured from an earthen pot, steaming in front of me... I can still smell and taste the lobster, prawns, mussels, octopus, and cuttlefish! I will never forget it!!"

Our first ‘Rick Steve’s’ trip was spectacular. A snapshot of many places in Europe that allowed a taste of culture and highlights at each location. Tim Tendick was outstanding, his knowledge (historical, political, cultural), communication, group and people skills, etc, all fed an incredible experience. Local guides were fantastic. Hotels were lovely and very ‘European’. Busses were comfortable with good visibility during travel. We appreciated the prep materials provided to manage planning.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour, and it exceeded our expectations! It was absolutely amazing! I can't praise the entire experience enough. Our tour guide, Tim, was fantastic! He was incredibly knowledgeable, positive, and a lot of fun! Tim kept us entertained on the bus and offered great suggestions for things to see and places to eat. The mix of activities was wonderful and well-balanced, with plenty of free time to explore on our own. The Rick Steves' team has thought of everything!

"Our "wow" moment from our tour was the Lauterbrunnen Valley and Mürren. Lauterbrunnen's waterfalls and cliffs set a stunning backdrop, while Mürren's alpine charm offered peaceful serenity. The valley’s tranquility and the sound of waterfalls was soothing. Exploring the trail in Lauterbrunnen back to Murren and our side trip with Tim to the Trummelbach Falls was unforgettable. This experience combined with Switzerland's overall natural beauty made it a cherished memory of our European tour."

It was very fast paced and busy from the start, anyone considering this trip should heed the warning of long walks and strenuous physical activity. Aside from that, the tour was fantastic, providing many museum, church, castle and history of the times. I found the tour showed us local customs and cuisine. It was well designed and executed. The guide was able to fit a lot into a day while staying in schedule. A good balance of local life and history. The bus was clean and comfortable. John the driver was excellent. He knew the roads very well and got the bus through some tight spots. The biggest relief on the tourwas knowing there was a toilet on the bus. Others echoed that sentiment.

"Fiorentina steak dinner in Florence. I had planned on trying to eat local and had the steak on my bucket list. Other meals that captured the local food scene were great as well. Pork knuckle, sausage meal in Germany, Roman tapas, riztafel in Amsterdam all showed us what these areas highlighted. Having them included in the tour was an important part of the experience "

"It’s impossible to name” just one”. Having incredible , local guides made each location come alive! The quaint hotels were lovely , but still had all of the modern conveniences that we could have dreamed of. The breakfasts were all great and better than expected.Switzerland was fabulous , but so was Cinque Terre. Learning about ancient cultures made each location special. We loved the small towns, and their histories, as much as the more famous cities."

The tour was a good blend of comfort and adventure. It wasn’t so adventurous that I felt frightened or endangered but I did do a lot more things and explore far more than I would at home or travelling on my own. After the pandemic lockdown, I was quite uncomfortable around people. The tour forced me out of my shell and made interaction with people easier. I also made connections between locations and history that I really hadn’t considered before. I am glad I took the trip.

"Hard to choose! There were so many wow moments! I was blown away with the architecture and art work! Cinque Terre was an awesome contrast to Rome (I am not a city girl), but I enjoyed Rome and its many attractions. Walking to see the Eiffel Tower at night, turning the corner, and it being right their, with the sparkling lights, and our tour family sitting in the lawn, enjoying the sights, sharing wine and celebrating, was a special time, as was our last nights dinner in Paris, going to rooftop"

It was a different kind of experience than our European travels on our own, but it was wonderous in its own way—everything travel should be! Countless moments of delight, discovery, and enchantment alternated with thought-provoking interludes and some sobering realities. I was entertained, educated, and inspired creatively. The art and history of humanity awed me while the modern crowds challenged me. It was a feast for the senses, the intellect, the body, and the spirit! And it was convivial!

"If I must pick one, it would be the hike with Andy from Austria into Germany to Neuschwanstein. I felt like I was in The Lord of the Rings, journeying with Aragorn and a merry band through the enchanted forest. The views were spectacular, and we had the trail all to ourselves. When we reached the lake below the castle, we even took a dip, like water nymphs! Soon the castle loomed above us, its gleaming walls shining through the morning mist. We had arrived in the land of the elves! "

Andy was outstanding. He had a complete knowledge of the areas we visited. We really didn't need to have the local guide. I saw many interesting things, and learned lessons about traveling. Next time if I travel in summer, I’ll only stay at hotels that have air-conditioning. Best of Europe is a great sampler, but when I go back, I’d spend at least 3 nights in each place (as I did in my 2 previous trips to Europe). I woun’t employ tour guides inside museums; they repeated much of what I already knew from Rick Steves’ books & videos; large groups around paintings make it harder for other people to see the art.

"Wow moments: walking into the Pantheon and seeing the oculus; seeing the French Impressionist paintings in the Orsay, my hotel room window view in the Swiss Alps. My favorite: meeting Australian emergency room nurse Renee and hiking with her 5 miles in the Cinque Terre. Shortly after I left Monterosso, I saw her on the trail, a solo female, doing 2 months in Europe … we hiked together, had breakfast in Vernazza and snacks in Corniglia. I loved her accent & felt pretty safe hiking with a nurse!"

Having previously taken the Heart of France tour--and having loved it--my wife and I had high expectations of the Best of Europe 21 day tour. We were not disappointed, as the tour exceeded our highest hopes and demands in every way. From the transportation, hotels, museums, and meals, everything was so carefully crafted and organized so as to allow us to simply be in the moment and enjoy our Grand Tour experience. Best of all was our tour guide, Tim, who was truly remarkable. A real gem!

We were a little hesitant about doing a 'tour' to see Europe, but after 21 days and lifelong memories, we are glad that we decided to do Rick Steve's Tour. Everything was carefully planned, which removed a lot of the stress from our family and allowed us to take it all in. Our guide, Tim, was great and he provided a lot of history and facts, which complimented the various stops. Our tour had the perfect blend of people which really added to the experience.

We really enjoy Rick Steves tours. This was my 2nd / my wife's 3rd. The tour did a great job at lodging us at the heart of the towns / cities along the way. Using privately / family owned made for a nice local experience of the area. It has a nice balance between group activities and free time. The bus was comfortable, and it felt like a home away from home. Tim Tendick was an amazing guide and did an outstanding job. Finally, getting to know the other people travelling was just so much fun

We had a lot of ground to cover so it was fast paced, but I did not feel rushed. We had a group of 29 people and we ALL became fast friends. Our tour guide Tim was fantastic; very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Our bus driver Math was super as well. Except for one hotel where we had very little hot water and another where I had a pretty substantial leak of water in my ceiling, all others were good. The reason I did not give Outstanding was because I felt the tour in Paris was weak.

It was a remarkable tour, with a great tour leader, Tim Tendick, a great driver, Matt, great guides, and 29 great fellow travelers. It is an intense tour, with a lot to see and do every day, but with enough free time to take it easy for awhile or see something we found of interest. Some of the meals were memorable for the great food, and for the great camaraderie at the table. By the time we hit Paris we really understood what it is to relax and enjoy meals with friends.

Dimitri was an excellent guide, and did a remarkable job coordinating the tour activities. Richard (bus driver) also was a group favorite and I could not be happier with the job he did. The only negative I could state would be the threat of kicking tour members from the tour if they contract covid, which lingered in my mind the whole trip. No one in Europe wears masks or seems to be concerned about it. Covid has become nothing more than a cold, and should be treated as such.

There were too many wow moments that peaked very different interests, making this question hard to answer. Long time Rick Steves fan, first time actually taking a tour. Rick’s got this thing locked in, everything was exactly as advertised. The website says this is a “strenuous” tour, I say that’s putting it lightly, grueling would be a better word but you end up at the most amazing places - 100% worth it. Both our tour manager & bus driver are some of the most impressive people I’ve ever met. A lot of what we did on this tour will be forgotten, I will remember those 2 forever.

I cried (and I wasn’t the only one), when he dropped us off in Paris, it was like losing a family member. Richard knows how to win friends & influence people, he’s a keeper!"

The entire tour was amazing. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, and always went the extra mile for everyone which added so much more to visiting these places. The history about each place and orientation we would get when we arrived also made it so much easier to navigate on our own when we had free time. I would have never thought of setting up a gondola ride or seeking out a demonstration from a local artist for how they do their work. Or stopping at a small hillside Italian town. I would highly recommend taking part in the optional opportunities on these trips, even if they are a little out of your comfort zone for anyone thinking about doing one of these tours. "

He gave us all of the information we needed to take advantage of what we were about to experience each day, and he patiently answered all of our questions. Our 26 companions quickly became our friends. We had no "complainers" in the group.

"There were many. One that stood out was our first view of the Duomo in Florence. Another was our first view of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre, on the challenging hike from Monterosso to that village."

We had a fabulous time. This tour hit all the "high points" in Europe for us and we enjoyed it very much. Our tour guide, Andy was super. Very knowledgeable, attentive, and patient with our entire group. We learned a lot about the history of the areas we visited, but also how to manage on our own in all the larger cities. It's a strenuous itinerary. My husband and I are 73 and 67 and we managed the steps, stairs, and cobblestone streets without any trouble. We made many new friends! Do it!

"Can I have two? The Swiss Alps, especially the view from Schilthorn was stunning and well worth the ride up the gondola. But I was struck by the antiquity and history that one finds in every country. The Capitoline hill and the Forum were impressive."

Our Best of Europe 21 day tour was a trip of a lifetime. From day one in Amsterdam to the end in Paris each day was like a new gift. The tour, the guide, the bus driver, all provided for a sampler tour of the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. The sights, the history and all of the experiences were amazing.

Everything went smoothly. I know that it took coordination to make that happen. We witnessed Andy checking in with hotels, restaurants and tour guides well before our arrival to be sure all would be ready. Knowing our room numbers and being able to go in and receive our key and go straight to our rooms is an example of the well oiled machine that is Rick Steves’ Tours.

"When we arrived at the walled city of Bacharach I wasn’t sure exactly what we would find. Matt parked the bus in the lot outside the wall at the bottom of the hill. Then all 28 of us pulled our bags up the hill rumbling over the cobblestone streets. We crossed under an arch, around a bend and then there was the city in all of its historic glory with flowers on the window sills, a may pole and old structures that were still in use. It was definitely a WOW moment for me. Picture book perfect."

This tour far exceeded my expectations. Having taken 2 My Way tours, I wanted to go back to Italy and France and have the guide be a resource to tell me what I am looking at and provide insight into the history and culture of the area. Our guide added immensely to the tour by giving a preview of the areas and sights in the next town/country. The hotels were as expected. The group meals were for the most part very good. The pace of the tour was fast but as expected. Overall - very satisfied.

"Switzerland and seeing David up close. Our hotel in Murren looked out on the Alps and the weather cleared perfectly for us to see them in all their glory. Everyone got to their room, walked out on their balcony, and said "Wow" at the views. We could not stop taking photos. The museums were amazing and having a local guide provide details and history to such famous works added greatly to the tour. "

The tour was more than imagined, I was given a fantastic slice of life of European life and its culture. All amenities and services provided were planned prior to arriving, and we were provided a 5-star class treatment. Even small issues that were not under control of the tour guide, were handled flawlessly and with a plan. The trip was the best vacation ever.

"While most would "wow" over the food, sights or sounds... I would say the "wow" moment for me was Andy Steves. He was an invaluable resource to navigate the nuances and culture of the European experience. I have learned historical background, cultural customs and general habits to successfully navigate through Europe comfortably and with confidence. This knowledge transfer was immeasurable in saving time, stress and trepidation... time used to be just "wow"ed by the experience."

The tour was a great way to get an overview of several parts of Europe. It was so helpful traveling with a guide and having transportation, hotels and tickets pre-arranged. That took away so much of the stress of traveling. It was nice that a lot of the local people that we encountered spoke some English and it was fun to try to communicate with them in their language. The local guides in each city were so knowledgeable and entertaining. The local food was good and a learning experience.

"There are so many to choose from, but my favorite area was driving in the Alps in Switzerland, taking the high-altitude gondolas between mountains, eating brunch at the Schilthorn revolving restaurant, and enjoying the alpine beauty, gorgeous weather and friendly people. The James Bond exhibit at the Schilthorn brought back memories of the early Bond movies. Taking the Skyline walk and Thrillwalk at Birg was very exciting and quite an adrenaline rush! "

We thought the tour was very good because we had a good guide and bus driver. The tour was busy and kept us moving, starting early each day, and staying busy all day. We enjoyed the additional tour guides that talked about their cities and specialty. The Mask Maker in Venice was very interesting as were several museum tour guides and the local guides in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Florence, Rome, and really all the city tours were very knowledgeable about history in their areas. It was appreciated,

"One Wow moment for me was an entire day, my 70th birthday in Venice! After a great tour of Saint Mark's square, the Doge's Palace and Correr Museum, we went to the Rialto Bridge to get some mementos to include a beautiful Murano blown glass bird and a Venetian Masque from La Bottega dei Mascareri. We finished the day with a great dinner at Ristorante Canal Grande and a gondola ride with Valentino who sang love songs and reminded us to kiss for luck beneath each bridge, Bridge of Sighs was best"

Since we did not complete the tour and were kicked off for covid after 7 days out of 21 it was not great the first bit we were on was okay but the pressure and anxiety from fear of being kicked off for covid was ever-present, especially when I heard the day we joined that over half of the last tour did not complete it I knew we were doomed. We lost half on this tour just as the tour was getting started and everyone was abandoned to fend on their own.

Im a HUGE Rick Steves Fan! I've done 7 tours. The guides, the books, etc..all the best!! But when I was separated from this tour by a positive covid test with nothing more than "cold symptoms" it was devastating. Of course I applaud Ricks concern for the spread of covid, and though our fellow tour members seemed to follow guidelines properly, the masking and personal space restrictions at the locations visited were, i believe, lax and I would certainly not recommend this experience to anyone.

My experience for the part of the tour we were on, 9 out of 21 days, was wonderful, with the exception of the kn95 mask wearing. Jody and Richard were both entertaining and helpful with little, washer and dryer, and big, falling in Venice, issues. The side adventures were very informative as well as fun. We had nice folks on our tour and it was sad half of us didn't make half the tour. I was quite excited to meet Lisa from Monday night travel, after having her in our home for the past 2 years!

"My favorite moment was sneaking out for Gelato, after getting ready for bed, to find the shop closed. So we wandered around the quiet streets of Haarlem and found a long line of folks getting ice cream. We joined line, got the best cherry ice cream ever. We then wandered and enjoyed the quiet cobble stone streets while we ate them! What a beautiful night it was.....and also the Gondola ride where we were sung to for our anniversary!!! Thank you Jody! As I shared with the group on the first day, I anticipated that it would be something to actually see many of the things we had only seen in textbooks or photographs. That was an understatement. In context, the trips enlightened more than just than just seeing things, it was the total absorption of the places we visited, through guides, or Jody that made the experience total. I t brought an interpretation that was unexpected.

"Oddly enough, for me, it was a bottle of Champaign, provided by Jody, on our last night in Paris in front of the Eiffel tower. Not only did my wife and I learn and experience so much on our trip, but I realized it was our group, that had been through so much, had grown so close. We all had a moment, rather unanticipated that brought us all together. A common bond, if you will. We all appreciated what we had experienced collectively together. And we all seemed to know that this is a very small wo"

Our tour guide Jody Engelsdorp did a wonderful job of educating us about the history of the places we visited, taught us how to use the transportation systems, and made sure we were comfortable, safe and answered any questions. As for our bus driver Richard, we always felt safe on the roads and was very hospitable. Truly enjoyed the itinerary of places we visited, the hotel locations, the local guides were a plus, and my fellow travelers who were a joy to share this trip with.

" I loved Bacharach, Germany and the Rhine River. Also, a pleasant surprise was being the first group of people to enter Colosseum. Had the place to ourselves for about 20 minutes. But after being home for a week now, what I reflect upon mostly is the history I learned on the trip both from Jody and the local guides. All that new knowledge has enlightened me! "

Great tour guide and bus driver, fun team dinners, great itinerary, good hotels in great locations. While it wasn't cheap the tour was top-notch. Loved the local tour guides, even the ones with a thick accent ("Andiamo, piano, piano!") Loved the policy of leaving anyone who wasn't on time as the fear of being left made everyone on time.

"Venice. I loved all the alleys and seeing how they live with only boats to get around. I'm thinking of making a game called "Escape from the Vatican" where you start in the Sistene Chapel and have to find your way outside the Vatican walls. It took us 25 minutes in real life. Or a game to find the checkstand of an Italian grocery store after having to weave down every aisle. "

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Amsterdam (AMS) and out of Paris (CDG or ORY) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The Amsterdam airport is about a 40-minute train, bus, or taxi ride from Haarlem, where the tour begins. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Best of Europe guidebook.
