Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Sleep in Paris (6 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and a visit to the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. We'll end our afternoon at the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages, home to the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk, we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo, and timeless treasures including Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orsay Museum, home to the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art with works by Monet and Degas, to Cézanne and Gauguin, and beyond. Then you'll be free to visit the nearby Orangerie Museum featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and other fine works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. Or visit other places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

This was my first travel tour. I was hesitant to sign up, as I am an independent traveler within the U.S.and Canada. Traveling to Europe was a big step for my husband and I, so we decided to take the tour to be with people who may be in the same situation. The tour was way beyond my expectations of excellence. Our tour guide, Rebecca is a caring, personable teacher that gave us confidence to return to Europe in the future.

"Being the only tour group in the Orsay, before it opened to the public. The bright light from the windows shone on the beautiful statues and ornately decorated former train station. The clock was spectacular!"

I thought the tour was well organized and well. It was a pretty big group (24 or so) and that, of course, presents challenges. The itinerary selection was good, the day plans and sequence of days was also good. All scheduled appointments were made, all third party guides were present at the appointed places and times.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have been to Paris before so I experienced the oh wow moments years ago. That being said, I appreciated things more this time as I was not in a panic to see and photograph things. I had not done the river cruise before, that was a highlight."

Every Rick Steves Tour I've taken, the week in Paris Tour being the fifth, has been wonderful. This was no exception. Our hotel was charming and very well located near the Tour Eiffel, our guide, Michaelanne, was superb...knowledgeable, warm, caring and fun. All the elements of the tour were planned to give us the best overall experience of Paris and there was enough free time for much exploring on our own. It was a special and rewarding experience in every way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"For me it was the Monmartre. Our local guide, Chris, really brought the history alive and had a wonderful sense of humor. It was very entertaining as well as being informative. And we so enjoyed our time at the artists' booths that both my daughter and I each came home with a new piece of artwork."

The Rick Steve's 7 day in Paris tour was perfect! From the hotel, to our guide MichaelAnne and the tour, we were treated so very well. Everything was thought through to ensure our group received the best of Paris.

The tour was very good. The experience was what we were expecting. I probably had an over load of museum art work. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and informed us of what to expect, where to go and how to navigate the city. The tour gave us the chance to pick and choose what we wanted to see, making the experience very good.

The tour was great, the history is amazing, going to the museum's and churches was so interesting. One thing I would like to see is maybe a break from the history and maybe in the middle of the tour we go somewhere such as a car manufacturer if there is one close to Paris or maybe a glass blower. These are just ideas I have no idea if these things are in the area. Seven days of history is a lot of history and a day of something different would be a nice break.

"This is really a hard question to answer. Instead of a location "wow" moment I would say my "wow" was our experience meeting and interacting with the people of Paris. Great experience! Veronique did an awesome job....then with Alfio on board...what a bonus!! Paris even exceeded my already high expectations. I cannot recommend the tour enough.

"Lunch with new friends at a "local" restaurant in Montmarte. Obviously there's a ton of other great wow moments. With our newly learned travel skills, we comfortably took a day trip on our own to Thionville and found the actual building where my Father-in-law lived while stationed there during World War II...as well as other sights he had photographed. That was and incredible experience."

Paris has engrossing museums, lovely architecture, and very good food. I enjoyed the Seine River cruise so much that I wanted to do it again but we were too busy. Paris is great for walkers which we are.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was afraid of using the metro but with Veronique and Alfio's guidance my fears went away. She taught us while still in hotel lobby and gave us maps. The next day she explained again, answered questions, and before we entered the metro she clearly pointed out that particular station, and went with us at front with Alfio at the back. Super job! The 7 day Paris tour was excellent. From the hotel, to the hotel staff to the tour guide Arnaud, the week was an exciting whirlwind of experiences. Arnaud was an excellent, informative guide with a fun sense of humor. Each day brought a new and different experience. Churches, museums, Marie Antoinette's farm, Versailles, walking tours, parks, suggestions for free time, all made for a wonderful trip.

It was my first trip to Europe, and I loved it! My sister was my travel buddy, and she's traveled there before. She helped as my mentor, but I learned a lot from the RS material that we could access and from our guides. We had a wonderful time! It was a good mix of guided tours and free time.

"So many great memories, I can't say there was only one favorite. Loved the Eiffel Tower summit trip to the top. Loved the boat trip in the evening down the Seine with the lights of the city along the shore, seeing the landmarks from the "other side" and even a band playing. Loved Pere Lachaise Cemetery and Montmartre tour. Visiting the Bouquinistes along the river, which Arnaud mentioned. Loved dinner out with our group and sharing details of our daily tours and lives."

This was an extremely well organized tour. Clearly, there was a lot of thought and planning put into everything from the hotel, it's location, the museums and all the many logistics necessary to moving a crowd smoothly through a city environment. The use of the "whispers" made it possible to communicate with tour members without shouting or even being in eye contact. Very impressed by the professionalism exhibited throughout the tour!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Difficult to pick one but entering the magnificent space in the Louvre underneath the pyramid with all the light pouring in was truly breathtaking. When that was first installed in the 80's I thought it was an eyesore and some nitwit architect just plopped down a modern structure in the most inappropriate spot possible. My mind was completely changed seeing it in person. This is one of the greatest things about travel. So many assumptions get challenged and you have to change the way you think."

I loved the tour. We had originally scheduled the 11 day France tour, but rescheduled to this tour due to my husband's illness in April. I am happy that we did. We really had the Parisian experience. We had just enough time with the group and enough time to explore on our own. I felt like I really enjoyed Paris and all its arrondissements being on this tour. Thank you for showing us Paris and giving us the tools to come back and explore some more.

Good tour packing a lot in during the 5.5 days. '7th day doesn't count as it is only the hotel breakfast & off to airports or train stations on our own, but not part of the RS tour. I would have liked at least one more bus tour. We sure did a lot of walking and museums on our own after the guide let us go off in the afternoons & evenings. It was an expensive tour of 5.5 days for much on our own after the morning guidance. However, Rebecca was SIMPLY THE BEST GUIDE EVER. FANTASTIC !

"Well, we basically saw a lot of museums in Paris. The Orsay was my favorite by far. I enjoyed this tour thoroughly. We got to visit many wonderful places and we also had several afternoons and evenings on our own. My wife and I napped in the afternoons and these naps really helped us enjoying the evening activities. We used the metro pass given to us by this tour on bus, subway and train. We even used it the day after the tour ended to go to airport from our hotel. It not only saved us a lot of money on taxi, it also allowed us to observe the Parisians on the move.

Arrived two days early...the hotel concierge gave us detailed train and bus instructions to Giverny and printed our tickets to the park. Our tour director, Rebecca was the best guide ever....she knows so much about France, taught us some basic French, gave us plenty of time to explore each site we visited, held an informative optional "wine tasting" event, taught us how to use the Metro...and buses, and trains...so well that we were able to continue to explore France on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

We simply had a great time! Although there was a LOT of walking (as advertised), it was not prohibitive. The hotel rooms were a bit small by US standards, but normal based on other European travel - but the hotel staff was great! The other members of the tour were fun to get to know and Rebecca was just a blessing! What an interesting person she is and so in love with Paris that her passion was evident at every turn. I should also mention that the "guest" guides were superior.

I will recommend this tour to anyone. The hotel is small but homey, clean and is well located . The staff and service is excellent. It's the first hotel I stayed where they clean the rooms and provide supplies and make the beds daily. It's a strenuous tour with lots of walking on cobblestones and warm weather,at the end of the day it's really nice to go back to a clean room with a cool diffused water in the kitchen

Overall I felt the tour was very well organized with a good balance of organized tours and adequate time on our own to explore. Patrick was AWESOME! He is so energetic and funny. He is a wealth of knowledge and did a great job of explaining history, wine, the French language, etc... The last night we were there was great! Patrick took us to one of the oldest restaurants in Paris and we ended up at the Eiffel Tower to have some wine and a toast with new friends.

There was an opportunity to see a lot of art at museums like the Orangerie, Orsay, Louvre and the guides that we had did a terrific job of interweaving French history with the buildings and art that we were viewing. The way the tour is organized gave us ample time to spend more time at the things we wanted to see more of and teaching us how to use the metro gave us the ability to do that independently.

Our "Best of Paris in 7 Days" tour certainly met our expectations from the earliest suggestion to arrive a day in advance in order to rejuvenate before starting the fast paced schedule through the printed preparatory materials and the daily guidance of getting to know and appreciate Paris. Our tour was enhanced by the clearing out of the rain mid-afternoon of the first day and remaining lovely all week. Ratings of each day's tour pace were right on. Choice of hotel was perfect.

"We carried out our prior commitment not to ascend the Eiffel Tower but soon found that the "Graceful Lady" of Paris was often a presence. Our "Wow" moment was when we first opened the curtains of our charming room at the Duquesne Eiffel Hotel to a view of two-thirds of the Tower! Her twinkling hourly lights were our last sight from bed at night and our first view in the morning to asses the forthcoming weather. She was the memorable destination for a walk on Saturday with our first group friend."

Wonderful tour. My first time in Paris and the whole city was exciting. Everything was well organized and the places we went were well chosen for experience and what was practical for the size of our group.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are too many. The biggest one was Versailles, seeing how immense it is, from the courtyard to the luxurious rooms to the vast pond. The another was the river cruise, to see Paris at sunset with all the beautiful buildings and to realize the part the river played in the development of Paris. Related to that was the Pont Neuf, to realize this is where modern Paris began. Tieig all these together is just walking in a beautiful city with so much to see, so much to offer."

I and my fifteen-year-old son loved everything about this tour! Julie was an incredible guide. She was smart, friendly, full of information and seemed to enjoy herself as much as the rest of us did. She didn't just show us around, she taught us how to get along on our own. She also led an excellent wine and cheese tasting! My son and I learned so much each day. We LOVED the hotel! The group was small enough that we were able to get to make friends pretty quickly. We loved the "whisper system".

"Our cruise on the Seine on our final night was magical. As we passed beneath the first bridge, Julie uncorked a bottle of champagne and served it to all of us. It was a beautiful evening and I think everyone was feeling overwhelmed with the beauty of Paris, the wonderful friends we'd made, and the sadness of our last night together on this life-changing week."

Best of Paris in 7 Days is another home run by the Rick Steve's team. Don't second guess your decision to press 'GO' on this personalized first class trip. You could spend a year researching and planning, but still come up short in trying to match this package. It's affordable and proven with a small group feel, which is a comfort if you are not accustomed to navigating cities that are foreign to you. The guides are brilliant, the accommodations well appointed and the dinners delectable.

It was another awesome Rick Steves tour for me. I have visited Paris several times on my own and love the City. That said, I always find value in seeing a familiar 'friend' with a guide and through someone else's eyes. In this particular case, it was through Marie's and my granddaughters' eyes. I appreciate and value the fact that your guides (for the most part) are men and women who actually are 'natives' of the countries and/or cities we visit. What an extraordinary experience overall!

My daughter and I decided to get our of our vacation comfort zone and go to Europe. Our goal was to have a rich learning experience. Goal met!! This was our very first guided tour and am so completely happy we chose Rick Steves' Tours. It delivered exactly what it promised: an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Paris in a small group. Our view of the world has expanded and we will return (with guide book in hand) by ourselves in the future and also plan our next RS tour!

"I joked that "I can get lost in the bathtub" so I was quite anxious to a) travel to Europe in the first place and b) navigate back to the hotel on the Metro by myself. Julie spent time to teach us exactly how to read the Metro map, use the guidebook, and be confident. One afternoon when we had free time, Hannah and I managed to get to/from several places ON OUR OWN. That was the Wow! moment. I can do this (explore new places!!)"

The tour was lovely as Paris is a wonderful place to be. Being on the tour, I actually felt a bit silly because we didn't do anything I couldn't have easily organized myself. I have been on other Rick Steve's tours, and we did more things off the beaten track or with locals. It would have been nice to have more of a discussion of current events. My son and I took two consecutive RSE tours this year -- Paris and the Heart of France followed by the Best of Paris. We did this because we felt we did not spend enough time in London and Rome during our RSE tours in 2017 and 2018. My overall tour was fabulous from start to finish, from the expertise, friendliness, and leadership of Julie, our guide, with whom we were in such great hands, to the hotel, the meals, and the breadth of our tours. We lucked out to also have Steve along on our tour, with his great energy, experience, and anecdotes. I fell in love with Paris, the history, the many gardens, the architecture, museums, cathedrals, the people and the culture and the pace, and of course, the bread!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"How can I possibly just name one! Monet's Water Lilies at the Orangeries brought tears to my eyes, I was so moved by it's beauty. Learning about the acknowledgment by the French government of its compliance with Hitler in deporting Jews to the concentration camps, and the building of Sacre Couer to honor French citizens killed by their own government during one of the revolutions, made me think of how much my young country has to learn with regard to reparations."

Perfectly planned and designed to get the best out of each day. We left our hotel each morning ready to see what the day offered, and returned each day exhausted but happy!! The Best of Paris was my first Rick Steves tour, and I couldn't be more satisfied. It was fantastic! Julie, our guide, was so personable and knowledgeable. I learned so much about the history, the architecture, the art, the food, the people, the politics and the culture of Paris. And the group-bonding philosophy of Rick Steves really made a difference. Our group was terrific. We got along so well and were all so interested in learning about and experiencing Paris together.

Julie made a difference between enjoying Paris and having a fabulous Paris experience. She planed the tour not only to use our senses but opened up great opportunities for friendships . The wine tour was the best I have experienced. The persons that guided us in the museums were professional and were able to give us a unique experience. The time between rest and walk was great. We felt tired, slept well and were ready for a new day the following morning. Listening Steven was fun.

From start to finish, the tour was phenomenal. Julie was the best. She gave us guidance on how to maneuver in Paris, and then let us do it! There was just the right combination of walking tours, museum trips, and dinners together. And yet we had free time as well. This was my first visit to Paris. I wanted your experience to show me the basic important parts. I stayed 3 extra days and felt confident on the metro, and able to go where I wanted after time with the tour. Michelann helped me find a cafe on Rue Montorgeuil between the organ concert at St. Eustache and the 7:30 concert at St. Chapelle which worked great. I saw the sites but also learned something about French culture. You're not only changing locations in travel, you're witnessing a different way of life. Many of the attractions cater to groups. You'll see long lines but won't be spending a big chunk of your time in a queue. Read the travel guide, learn some phrases, YOU'RE IN PARIS !

Patrick the tour guide was awesome! He was very personable and had a great sense of humour. This was my first Rick Steves tour and traveling on my own, Patrick explained the metro very well. I felt comfortable traveling on the metro on my own. The group was very welcoming and including the single travels to join them on their excursions. I felt there was enough time to be on your own to explore the city on your own.

The best "wow" moment was the last dinner, and when we walked to the Eiffel Tower to have a glass of bubbly to celebrate the end of the tour. It was raining that night but Patrick found a great spot to see the Eiffel Tower lite up and stay dry. It was very magical!"

I especially liked the fact that the group was not too big. This allowed us to get to know each other and socialize with the entire group when we were out and about. The hotel was clean, comfortable and quiet, and was located in a nice, safe neighborhood. Breakfasts included a nice variety and dinners were delicious. The Paris tour was exceptional and our guide worked around itinerary adjustments, demonstrations, holiday closures, etc. Tour participants were friendly, open and interesting. The tour was every bit as physical as the tour materials state, so don't overestimate your abilities, however, we all had the option to "opt out" of activities whenever we wanted. We didn't because we didn't want to miss anything. Our guide, Marie, made the week so much fun. It was the trip of a lifetime.

I was very pleased with the activities and places visited. The tour guide, Marie, was not only extremely knowledgeable about Paris, but she knew how to handle a sizable group very well - employing Rick's travel philosophy. The schedule, though ambitious, was not exhausting. We had ample free time. Admittedly the weather, at times, was not helpful, as in the boat ride, which turned out to be much colder than anticipated. The selection of the hotel was excellent.

I loved the tour, especially the hotel with its staff and location. The group was friendly and our guide Toni was the best. But the reason I do not give this 5 stars is because I believe that we visit too many churches and museums and that is not all there is to a city's culture, what about the food or music, would have loved a food tour or a concert at the Grand Opera House. The Cluny museum could have been omitted.

This was my fourth Rick Steves tour. I found the "Best of France on Your Own" tour last year scratched the surface regarding Paris, so I added two days at the front end and one at the end of this tour so I could get to the sites, museums, neighborhoods that I was interested in. I was entirely successful, in part to a very good job by our tour guide Arnaud and in part due to siting of our tour at the Hotel Dusquesne Eiffel.

This tour was absolutely amazing! It was a perfect balance of walking tours, museums and free time. Having both the Metro and Museum pass included as part of the cost of the tour made the experience so easy. I never use public transportation at home but was extremely comfortable using this in Paris. Everyone in the tour was easygoing and friendly which always makes the experience better. The hotel was perfectly situated, the room comfortable and the staff extremely helpful.

I very much enjoyed Paris, and Patrick was a terrific guide! He was professional, had a great sense of humor, and had so much to show and teach us as we explored the city. The hotel (Londres Eiffel) was wonderful, particularly the kind, generous staff. I enjoyed the mix of structured activities and free time so that we could choose our own adventures.

After 11 years of waiting I finally got a chance to see Paris. I was so happy. The tour group was nice, Parisians formal and polite. Lots of walking on this tour 5-8 miles a day. I had to get a pair of sketchers looking shoes and gave my boots to the sales girl to toss or keep. The art scene here is incredible. It was an interesting time to be in Paris, a week framed with civil protests and holiday lights. We saw as much of the city as one can in five full days, learned to navigate the underground Metro stations, ate hearty brasserie food, walked ten miles some days, enjoyed vistas stretching from the Eiffel Tower to the Arc de Triumph to Sacré-Cœur to Versailles, slept soundly in our characteristic™ hotel, enjoyed getting to know our diverse tour members, and, in the end, felt at home there.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We got a glimpse into the French way of things as we strolled the Champs-Élysées on Sunday morning, observing holiday shoppers dodging workers removing plywood from the posh shop windows as life returned to normal after a day of protests. The French people are not shy about expressing their displeasure--mass protests are a part of that ethos. And of course the long history, architecture, art, and charms of Paris will all return to mind as I replay our Parisian adventures in my mind."

This was a return visit for me and a FIRST visit for my Travelling companion. What a glorious week! THe weather cooperated, the political scene was quiet, the metro was working and the group of fellow travellers were delightful and interesting. Winter in Paris means less tourists, as well. Having extra space to meander about in the museums and the streets is amazing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My Travelling companion and I took a self-guided tour through the Palais Garnier where we watched a crew work on an upcoming ballet's stage lighting cues. THe theater was alive with memories of sugarplum fairies and fleets of swans which had graced the stage over the centuries. The Chagall Ceiling was a huge "ooo - ah" moment for me. I'd forgotten how bright and vivid the colors were. The many elaboratel and ornate foyers were a surprise as well."

This tour is crafted in an ideal way. 1) Daily group activities: museum visits with an expert historian, wine tasting, boat ride, group meals in French restaurants, ... 2) Daily time to make your Paris visit your own. The RS tour provides a week long public transportation pass and museum pass to enable free quick entry into all the major sites. 3) Hotel is located near the Eiffel Tower and is expertly managed. 4) Our guide rounded out our experience teaching French customs.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It wasn't a riot -- the loud noises we heard coming back to the hotel after a late evening drink at rue Cler. It was police sirens and 800 to 1000 or so motorcycles turning onto a nearby boulevard. Each was ridden by someone in a red coat. Some were strung with Christmas lights. Some had frames and lights made to look like they were sleighs."

A wonderful time in and around Paris--seeing so many renowned and historic sites, learning so much about France, interacting with the French people, sampling foods & wines & beers... especially with the seasonal/Christmas decor and spirit on display! December weather in Paris wasn't bad at all (I wrongly packed for colder temp's), and at most locations & times the crowds weren't nearly as overwhelming as they are at warmer seasons. Our guide Virginie was a warm, delightful, knowledgeable leader.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm not one for "favorites" but was properly awed by so many Parisian sights & settings that I thoroughly overloaded my camera with images & future memories (that I'm just beginning to process & share). Our good luck with mostly avoiding the rain was also notable! And having no obstruction from the "gilets jaunes" protesters (while also avoiding problems from the Strasbourg shooting when my wife and I were there just before the tour)."

I would definitely go on another Rick Steves' tour. I think we got much more out of our trip (in terms of both the knowledge/experiences imparted, as well as the sheer number of places visited) than if we had gone to Paris on our own. The quality of the guides (Patrick, as well as local guides) was probably my favorite aspect. I also liked that we had a lot of time on our own. The biggest downside was that we were very tired by the end of the tour (many early mornings and late nights).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely the boat tour on the Seine river at night. Not only is Paris a beautiful city at night, but I felt like the city is meant to be viewed from the river (as many of the key historical sites were built along the banks of the Seine)."
