Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Sleep in Paris (6 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including visits to a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. Depending on the season, we'll end our afternoon at the Panthéon (spring/summer), the Neoclassical monument to France’s history and people, or the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages (fall/winter), home to the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin, and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

This was our first Group Tour. The organization, [INVALID]ions for our visits and the group comradery could not have been better. Antoine Bonfils was an excellent guide. His balance of professionalism and personal touch was just right, only to be exceeded by his knowledge of Paris.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many to describe. I do want to complement Antoine on his teaching strategies concerning navigating the Metro. He introduced the big picture, then accompanied us as we used the system, finally letting us work the system ourselves from what we had learned. You may not like to hear this, but we both felt with this background, we wouldn't need a tour group during our next Paris visit."

What a fantastic experience! This was our first Rick Steve tour and was not sure what to expect and we were not disappointed. We were amazed at how much we got to see in the city of Paris. We loved touring the different neighborhoods keeping all this information with us so we could see it again in the future. We learned so much too--how to ride the Metro, wine tasting, cheese tasting ... we felt we really got the Parisian experience.

Everything went smoothly from start to finish. I LOVED the hotel. My room was beautiful and very comfortable. The location of the hotel could not have been better, with the Champs du Mars and Eiffel Tower within walking distance. I appreciated how I could walk to everything. I used Le Bus to get from the airport and then had a 15 minute walk to the hotel. Very convenient. The tour guide, Arnaud, was very knowledgeable and friendly.

My tour was well organized with a fun and knowledgeable tour guide that made me feel confident that I would see as much of Paris as possible during or 7 day visit. Our guide was great, he was very knowledgeable and punctual and had many small stories to personalize the experience. We had quite a few seniors on our trip who required repeated instructions, extra time, and a slower pace who may have felt hurried or tired. However, for a young adult I felt I was able to see and understand the most important areas of Paris with plenty of time left for exploring on my own. We had some great dinner conversations.

A bit overwhelming, but not in a bad way. There was - on paper - a balance between planned activities and time on our own. However, there was so much to see and process that I needed a bit more "downtime," which was certainly encouraged by our guide and utilized by other group members. I'm not complaining about the active schedule: It was wonderful to have such a wealth of opportunities to experience Paris. The hotel was comfortable and charming and the other tour members good company.

Our goal was achieved. From another trip we took with this company, we thought the trip would save us time and effort in "learning the ropes," for our month-long stay in Paris. We learned about ordering food, getting around on public transportation, cultural norms of behavior, and social customs. Additionally we gained insights from excellent tour guides at individual sites and had a quick overview of the city. One cannot understand or feel comfortable in another culture from a mere week in anot

We had never been on a guided tour vacation before and I was first surprised to hear from some of our fellow travelers how many RS tours they had been on 10, 12 even 13! Now I see why. The tour was everything I expected it to be, except I'm not as young as I was in 2001, when I took a Rick Steves tour of northern Italy with tour guide Jamie and 18 tourists. This time I needed down time in the afternoon and mostly got it. We often were on our feet for 6 hours or more a day and I wore out a pair of new walking shoes. I especially liked the buddy system that worked every time. Marie didn't lose anyone. She is a great guide and made my overall experience very good.

This tour not only included the "must do" highlights, but educated you in getting around Paris in a way that encouraged exploring on your own. Enough open time was left in the schedule, but not too much, so that if you had a particular interest, you could go off on your own and see what you wanted to see. Rick Steves fellow-travelers tend to be a chummy bunch, almost as if we're all members of the same fraternal org., so everywhere we went we found friends from the group to lunch with, etc.

I was so pleased with the Rick Steve's Paris tour and all the excellent tour guides! I got to see many, many lovely sights and best of all walk around the Paris neighborhoods, soaking up the charm. Our hotel had a wonderful location, 5 minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower, and it was perfect. I felt that we were well-looked after and we were schooled in how to get around Paris and how to behave. The breakfasts and meals together were delicious and everywhere we visited things went smoothly.

It was a wonderful week in Paris with a strong focus on art, museums and the character of various neighborhoods. Toni and Antoine did a great job of teaching us how to navigate the city on our own. Our various museum guides added depth to our museum visits. Cerise, in particular, made the Orangerie a tour highlight. It was a lovely introduction to a city with so much more to offer.

"My Wow! moment for ambience was the boat tour on the Seine. Seeing the city from the river - in particular, the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower - was spectacular. We had another great time in Paris. I have spent time in Paris for the past 40 years but my wife is finally learning the city. Toni was a wonderful and resourceful tour guide. The selection of sites and museums worked very well around the rain and what was closed. My "overall experience" was out of RS tours control. I spent 3 days "touring" the American Hospital before the RS tour. Got pickpocketed Thursday morning on the subway but - now I have even more exciting stories to tell !

Overall I would give our experience a thumbs up and would recommend it to others. Staffing of the experience, from hotel to guide were by well versed, professional and patient people. I could tell they all had a sense of humor about what they do as often it is necessary when dealing with the expectations of American tourists. I have been to Paris before, long ago, however enjoyed the suggestions and directions of going to the iconic areas and sites of Paris.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I wouldnt't characterize my wow as favorable. I was surprised how crowded Paris was even during the off season. There was some hope that crowds would be avoided, but the biggest one came at Versailles, when the surge of tour groups, pushing and shoving to get inside became quite aggressive. It did not make me want to go back. There must be a better way of controlling crowds at this site, however realize it is not in the hands of your company at that level."

The tour is ideal for someone who is looking for a "Paris immersion" -- the program really helps you learn how to navigate the excellent Parisian subway and bus system -- very clean, efficient and safe! The tour takes the stress out of visiting a new European city, and includes all the tools one needs for a great experience: including the subway/bus pass, Museum pass, and local knowledge! The itinerary provides a great balance of organized activities and ample time to explore on your own.

Apart from the cold weather, the trip was amazing. Patrick can include the knowledge of a lifetime into one week in Paris, but he makes it entertaining and fun. You never realized you could walk and learn so much in this short period. My husband, who was certain he would not enjoy this tour at all, was a convert by about hour two. I was a bit apprehensive about travelling in a group, but the Rick Steves' group size is perfect. It was well-paced and in a terrific neighborhood. The hotel was, indeed, cozy, but who sits around in hotel rooms when you are in Paris? Not me! Nice staff too. I think I appreciated most our guide's (Patrick's) careful schooling of us in how to ride a subway. After the first trip, dashing into a jammed rush-hour car, I felt confident that I could handle it (we don't have subways in Ohio) and it made a huge difference in freedom to explore the city.

The main theme for me on this trip was STRESS FREE. I loved our tour guide, Marie. My husband and i called her "momma Marie" and she gave us a level of comfort and security throughout the trip. The events scheduled were just enough to make us feel we didn't waste our time, but not too much to exhaust us into oblivion. The tour experience was all that I expected. Our guide, Marie, was top-notch. She was very personable in addition to being a great guide. Her knowledge was expansive whether it was history or wine. What a great experience and 7 delightful days of education, fun and a very enjoyable time. Our guide , Virginie made the city come alive for a first time visitor like me. "There were two "wow" moments for me. The first was the Eiffel Tower and how it dominates the city skyline and, quite frankly, how it helped us navigate around the city (and return to our hotel). Enjoyed each of our meals out as a group and the location of our hotel was perfect. The local restaurants were good and many of the stores we visited were very friendly.

This was a fast-paced tour which hit some of the highlights of Paris. It seemed to be a good mix of planned activities and free time. Participants should be aware of the amount and pace of walking, climbing stairs, and being smooshed into Metro at rush hour... I do wish we had had a longer tour of the Louvre. The guide there was excellent but we seemed to rush from one item to another.

This tour was great! Most of what we wanted to see was included in the itinerary, and there was plenty of free time to work in the sites that weren't. The museum pass and metro pass included with this tour was fantastic to have - it made going off on our own much easier. This tour took us to areas of the city that we would not have known to explore on our own, and gave us interesting background information on Paris, which enhanced our experience.

I loved my Best of Paris in 7 Days Tour. It was such a great introduction to this complex, lively, historically and culturally rich city. I would have never been able to cover so many key places, get such great history and information and have so much fun on my own. We learned how to use the Metro our first day and with our Metro pass and museum pass were able to make the city our own. The tour was a perfect mix of structured events and free time to explore. Paris: Allons-y!!

The tour was extremely well planned and ran super smooth! It was a great balance of guided tours and free time. While Paris has so much to offer it's hard to choose which spots to go and which to pass up, I think the locations chosen were chosen very well! Given the opportunity to do it all over again, I honestly wouldn't change a thing. It was a comfortable sized group, everyone had positive energy and looked out for each other, and our guide was the best!

As this was our first trip to France, the 7 day tour of Paris was an outstanding introduction into French culture. From the museums to the night cruise on the Seine to the food and wine, our experience in Paris was magical. Our tour guide, Rebecca Berry, provided us with a plethora of historical facts and interesting stories. This introduction in Paris equipped us an excellent platform for the remaining 2 weeks we spent throughout France.

I loved being in a small group, traveling together on Public Transportation (NOT crammed into a packed tour bus)and staying in a small centrally located hotel. Even with the advance warning, the activity level did start to affect my knees...so I took one morning off to do laundry, visit a Pharmacy and eat lunch at a Rue Cler bistro. By evening I was ready for the Louvre and the remainder of scheduled activities (and a nonscheduled evening of dinner and a show at the Moulin Rouge!) Merci!

"The beautiful weather! I, and everyone else packed for cool, rainy weather and we experienced blue skies, sunshine and warm (leaning hard towards HOT on a few days)days and evenings. I have been on two RS tours to Italy...this one was different in that it was shorter, more intense in terms of museums to visit, and relied on the metro every day to get places. Paris is always a special place to visit and being there was a wonderful experience. The hotel was fine and the location was really good. I was able to use the metro with confidence with the instruction and guidance of Julie. Also, the fellow tour members were a really great group that added to the adventure. The downsides might be the weather was a little cool and a bit rainy, but - it was Paris! I had a mishap, which limited my activities, but it was Paris, and great tour members helped.

"I had a mishap and my wow realization was that the professionalism and leadership of the tour guide made all the difference for me while there. I have had wonderful guides prior (Yaren in Istanbul, Donald in Sicily and now Julie) and their abilities to keep a loose group together, safe and learning is impressive. But when something goes awry, their abilities to handle the situation is great. Another reason to go on an RS tour - the RS tour guides help travelers maintain safe and happy travels."

It was good. I had been to Paris before but wanted to obtain more information on its history during this visit. We got a good overview of the city and its history. The format was changed slightly from the tour schedule information resulting on one day the available "free time" didn't really give time to "do anything" such as a museum/gallery visit before we needed to be back for dinner. I guess I could have skipped the dinner.

The tour was everything we expected it to be. Well organized, thorough, informative, entertaining and clearly the best way to see one the most fascinating and beautiful cities on earth. Paris was wonderful, the city seems to be alive with people from every part of the globe. Loved the Louvre Museum, and the different walks we did as a group. The group meals were excellent and our group really enjoyed being together and sharing experiences.

This was our first time on a tour and everything about it exceeded our expectations. I loved everything about it. The hotel was lovely and in a great location. The activities were well organized and active, and although we knew we could "opt out" of any, we never did. This was our first Rick Steves tour & I was very impressed with the whole philosophy. We had been on more high end tours that take you to the various sightseeing locations. Only having a very limited time to see the highlights, then on to the next. I really liked learning the transportation system, getting an overview & highlights of the major sightseeing sites, then having time on our own to concentrate on what interested us the most. We experienced Paris like a local.

My overall tour experience was excellent. This was not my first trip to Paris. However, many of the things that I got to see and experience on this trip were new and interesting. The dining opportunities were good, and the travel by Metro was easy enough for me, although several of my tour mates were a bit wary of it. I have slept in my share of hotels around the world, and the one in Paris was certainly good enough, except for the noise outside. Thankfully, I had earplugs!

If I were to delete something from the current tour schedule to fit in the Orsay, I would eliminate the Marais walking tour. It was nice and not that compelling in comparison to the Orsay. Taking the Rick Steves tour for our first time abroad made our experience virtually stress free and so very enjoyable. We began our experience at a beautiful 4 star Parisian hotel in the heart of Paris. We walked, used the metro, and took a bus (and even train) everywhere we wanted to go in Paris! OUTSTANDING is not a word I use lightly and yet it does not fully cover how great Julie and the tour was. This was my 6th Rick Steves tour - I am a big fan. As always, our guide, Patrick Vidal, was excellent, as were our local guides for destinations such as the Louvre, the Orangerie Museum, Versailles, and the Montmartre. "There were many great moments so it's difficult to choose, but I would say it was when my husband and I were taking a quick walk through the Musee D'Orsay after Rebecca had given us an introduction to the museum, and we walked into a room and there was the famous "Whistler's Mother" painting! No one was really near it, so I got to get a good look at it. This was a wonderful reminder of how many hidden gems there are in Paris."

We wanted to get the highlights of Paris without having to stand in lines especially the Louvre and Versailles AND have someone like Rebecca that did navigated "in and out" of crowded areas and yet saw the great high points. She was terrific! The trip accessed to Museums and sights was great, just to the front of the line! We have been to Paris a couple of times before usning Rick's guides and wanted to avoid "wandering" Appreciated ALL the guides and wonderful tour leader/organizer Rebecca

I really enjoyed all the places we went and the tour guides with the specialty. Our tour leader Rebecca was really terrific, enthusiastic, and warm. She did a few special things that were special such as a wine and cheese tasting at the hotel. That was fun. As far as the restaurants that were included in the program, only one was really good food, though. I wish we had had a few more planned activities in the evenings.

Rebecca, our tour guide, was wonderful! She had her eye out for each of us! She really made it a great experience ! It is remarkable to think of how much of the "real" Paris we were able to experience . We walked our feet off - but well with it! The hotel Londres Eiffel was lovely. It was welcoming and the staff did all they could to make us feel at home and comfortable . I do not have one complaint!

An excellent tour experience. The pace, location of the hotel/hotel itself, daily schedules, Metro/Bus/RER, free time, our tour group itself and of course, William, all worked out to be a most excellent Best of Paris tour! The other tours guides, at the museums, Versailles and around Paris were Exceptional. They enhanced the experience 100 fold. The meals were good. Our room was small at the hotel, which isn't so much a problem, but it wasn't efficient. While we've been on a few Rick Steves tours, this was our first city tour. We enjoyed having the opportunity to spend a week in such a wonderful city. Once William taught us how to use the metro and the bus, we were able to put our City Pass to work and get around town with ease. The tour was very active (which we loved!) and we were busy from breakfast until 11:00 pm most nights. Not having a bus ride to recover on meant you had to pace yourself.

"While not on the tour agenda, we took the Metro to the Arc de Triomphe and climbed the stairs to the top. The view of Paris was spectacular with the various boulevards radiating out from the Arc. Among the tour highlights, the Saint-Chapele stained glass was incredible. After the Paris tour, we visited Chartes Cathedral where Malcom taught us a little about how to read the stained glass. I wish I would have had the benefit of this knowledge at Saint-Chapele. We'll just have to go back."

My recent high school graduate granddaughter had a year of world history, a year of art history; "Gramma, I can list all those kings and what they did!"; so this BEST OF PARIS IN 7 DAYS was perfect timing for her. A marvelous time visiting the sites of Paris. The schedule was adjusted daily due to weather & local incidents, but overall we saw all that we had anticipated visiting. We had a wonderful week in Paris with Julie and the Rick Steves' tour! The group was fun, made up of a variety of ages and from different areas of North America. Julie was available and informative. My tour (The Best of Paris in 7 Days) was extremely well-planned, right down to the minute, and my group always felt like we knew exactly what was happening, even on days when we would all travel en masse to a given destination within the city. Our structured time (specific locations) was very well chosen, and yet there was also ample "free" time available to undertake other activities as well, should we want to, say, go visit the Eiffel Tower or a less-known cathedral.

Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Paris: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotel

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for our tour hotel is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to the hotel.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

If you plan to travel in Europe before or after your tour, Paris is perfectly located for quick trips around France or to neighboring countries. London is only three hours away by the Chunnel train, Brussels and Bruges are about two hours away, and Amsterdam is a mere four-hour train ride.

Flying within Europe can be reasonable. Ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Paris before your tour begins, learn the Métro (subway) system and use the Rick Steves Paris guidebook for sightseeing ideas and good-value restaurants. If you are in Paris in the off-season, it's a good idea to double-check museum hours and closures with a quick call.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Paris that we do not do as a group: Arc de Triomphe*; Les Invalides*; Jewish Art & History*, Marmottan, Picasso, and Pompidou* museums; Eiffel Tower; St. Sulpice organ concert; Père-Lachaise cemetery; Paris sewer tour; day trips to Monet's Giverny garden, Chartres, Vaux-le-Vicomte, and Fontainebleau*. (* Entry is free with the Paris Museum Pass you'll be given when the tour begins. To save money, you may want to save a couple of these for your free afternoons.)

The Marmottan Museum is closed Mondays, and the Jewish Art & History Museum is closed Saturdays; most other museums are closed Tuesdays. Confirm all sightseeing plans with a tourist information office.

This tour does not include a visit to the Eiffel Tower. However it is often a highlight for travelers, and one we highly recommend. Avoid the lines by booking tickets several weeks in advance. For more details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.

Packing

For advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
