Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Paris.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. After free time for lunch, we'll regroup and stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, named for the language you'd have heard on these streets if you'd walked them in the Middle Ages. Then you'll be set free for the afternoon to explore more of the city.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. After free time for lunch and exploration, we'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Paris.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk, we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo and timeless treasures including the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 5: All Day at the Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet, or to zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Train: 1 hour. Sleep in Paris.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orsay Museum, home to the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art with works from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and beyond. Then you'll be free to visit the nearby Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and other fine works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. Or visit other places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

I thoroughly enjoyed our Paris experience as it was everything I have come to hope for, from a Rick Steves tour experience. We had a great opportunity to see many of the prime locations with outstanding guides, as well as lessons on how to navigate Paris safely. Ample free time to explore our own interests in the city and the tools to be able to make the most of our time. Rolinka was an absolute gem, a breath of sunshine even on our cloudy day. She made each day joy-filled and enjoyable!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had visited Tokyo on my own in 2019, and came across the "Gates of Hell" Rodin sculpture in Ueno Park. I took a photo at the time because it was so enormous and ornate. On one of our "free-time" portions of the day we chose to visit the Rodin museum (mainly to see 'The Thinker") with our Museum Pass and found the same sculpture there. I was amazed! Then I looked it up online to find there were six copies of them throughout the world."

Rolinka was an amazing guide, but we have never had a guide who wasn't amazing (this is our fifth tour). She showed us the ropes about getting around on public transportation, and we had a great balance between group tour time and individual time (so that we could see or go back to things of interest). The hotel was great, cozy and friendly. The neighborhood became just that, our neighborhood. We would bump into our fellow travelers as neighbors. And Paris is amazing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We went back to the Louvre, having learned to stay as far away from the Mona Lisa as possible to avoid the crushing crowds. While wandering the halls, I ended up standing in front of two Vermeers, and there was nobody in front of me. Nobody was taking a selfie. I could look at them unaccosted as long as I wanted. It was magical."

The tour was a great overview of Paris. With the strike going on, it was nice to know we had our tour guide Daniela watching and making adjustments as needed. All the guides were great. Our guide for the Musee d'Orsay, James, was especially fantastic. The hotel location was perfect. On our very last day, we were close enough to walk to the Rodin Museum, swing by a bakery to pick up lunch, and walk to the Eiffel Tower to picnic in the sunshine before heading to the airport.

We love Paris and have been there many times, but this was the first time we took a 'tour' there and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great way to spend time with family. Even though it was cold, seeing Paris during the holidays was very special...the street lights, the Christmas markets, hot wine (vin chaud), classic French onion soup, New Years Eve. A great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was New Years Eve at the Eiffel Tower with family. We were able to walk there from the hotel. It's fun to see how others celebrate. Also, just being in Paris for the holidays was a WOW everyday with all of the lights and Christmas markets. It was a great feeling everyday!"

This was my first RS tour so I wasn't sure what to expect. Now I know and can better prepare. Too much like -- if this is Tuesday, it must be Belgium. I think I need more free time to wander. Also, I was unprepared for the high-school type cliques.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My own night bus ride to see sights and Christmas lights. The bus tour organized by your group didn't really do anything at all because of the traffic engendered by the strike. I had reservations about this trip because I thought I wasn't a "tour" type person. But now I am! So glad I talked my childhood girlfriend into coming along...we had a blast. What was so surprising was the amount of information I thought I knew, but didn't. The culture, and the architecture was so impressive. I was surprised at how organized and efficient the tour was. Overall experience was perfect. Loved the half days to explore on our own. Very thoughtfully done!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Louvre was just so much more than I thought it would be. The guide was so French, so gracious to us, and so knowledgeable about the exhibits. I would never have been able to gain the depth of knowledge without this guide. Entering in the moat was astounding, I had no idea of it's history. What is beautiful is we all took away something extraordinary that we learned. I've heard people say they have been to the Louvre, but I realized I took away the treasure of memories I won't forget"

This was our first Rick Steve's tour and we've been recommending it to friends and family now that we're home! The tour was a great mix of structured, guided experiences and free time. The trip to Paris gave us an opportunity to explore one of the great cities of the world with the guidance of our wonderful guides Rebecca and her able assistant Lauren. We were able to not just see the highlights of the city but had the added benefit of expert guides within the art museums and areas we explored. I loved our tour of Paris. It was fast paced and made the best use of our time there. But it also had free time built in, so you could do your own thing or relax if you wanted. Great guide, good itinerary, great food, plus free time to do more time in museums like we wanted. Being the taught how to use the Metro was crucial to being free to go where we wanted.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"To be honest, those crazy croissants every morning at breakfast . . . Unbelievable. But truly, the overall experience was "wow." Paris is "wow." Fresh food, small shops, high quality merchandise, narrow streets, happy children in abundance, clean streets, friendly people. all were "wow.""

I had never been to Paris, but I have watched Rick Steves programs and used his books for travel elsewhere in Europe, so I think I had a pretty good idea what to expect and, frankly, it met all of my expectations. This was my first group tour and I was very happy with all of the experiences I had. Chris and the local guides made it all very accessible but I learned so much as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Lots of "wow" moments but I was so surprised by my reaction to Monet's "Magpie" and "Turkeys" paintings at D'Orsay. They were positively luminous up close, in person, in a way that can't be replicated in books or other reproductions. I felt thrilled."

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Paris tour experience. We were, at first, hesitant to sign up for a tour. In the past we have traveled on our own, or with family and friends. It was such a great benefit to have our hotel, tourist sites and museums visits arranged for us. I doubt that we would have seen as much had we planned our own trip. And having guided walking tours and museum tour only added to visit. Our guide, Chris, was amazing. She was knowledgeable, helpful, and congenial.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are of course, many "wow" moments in Paris. One of my favorites is an afternoon we spent traveling around on the Metro, shopping at a flea market in the Marais area. We were able to find our way around on the train (thanks to Chris) and for a period of time felt like we were native Parisians as we walked the streets shopping at the outdoor market and had lunch in a wonderful sidewalk cafe."

"Favorite WOW moment was walking the streets and realizing I knew my way around Paris! Taking Rick Steves' advice and asking to be seated upstairs at Laduree on Champs-Elysees and having tea and their special chocolate tart then finding a Laudree on Rue Cler and having tea and a raspberry macaron as my last moments in Paris before heading to CDG."

Tour was terrific! Our hotel was a small, family owned hotel similar to other Rick Steves hotel choices. Very close to the Eiffel Tower too. Breakfast was good. Our tour guide, Marie, was great! She was accommodating, relaxed, knowledgeable and friendly. We had a good balance of free time and tour time so that worked for us as well. We easily learned the metro system and were able to navigate around Paris on our own time. Marie was able to suggest places we might want to visit.

Enjoyed the full planned tours and our time by ourselves. Did lots of walking which was great. Hotel location is primo near Eiffel. Especially liked walking along the Seine which we did often, The nighttime included boat tour is fantastic with all the lights on the city. The boat is big with probably over 300 people on it so definitely would have preferred a smaller vessel.

Hotel was fine. Easy to locate because it was so near the Eiffel Tower. Breakfast was fine. Our Guide, Marie was very good. She did a very good job of teaching us how to use the Metro. The Museum Passes were great. I was surprised how much we saw on our own with them. The restaurants we went to with our group we astounding!

It was wonderful. It was exactly what I would expect from Rick Steves. I wanted to learn about the city and public transportation and not be shuttled in a bus to "markets" where the tour director makes a commission. We saw the city from a wonderful neighborhood and Marie was a perfect guide. She talked us through each step and our headsets were great - no shouting. There was, as we expected, lots of walking and steps and cobblestones and it was fun and fascinating.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We walked into our hotel room after taking a bus in from the airport. (We are adults! We can do this!) The full length windows were open and a beautiful sunny day was outside. The windows and railing outside simply said: Europe. Paris. Then I stuck my head out the window and there, on my right, was the Eiffel Tower! Gob smacked."

For our first visit to France we decided on a tour, and this one worked out well. Our guide Marie was wonderful and was effective at dealing with unpredictable situations like protests, memorial services, etc. She adjusted schedules accordingly and we did not miss a beat. Our travel companions were flexible, and it was true that there were hardly any complainers, and folks went with the flow. The Hotel Duquesne Eiffel was a great location, although for the price the rooms were small.

The tour nicely provided access to many, many of the museums Paris has to offer. Free time guidance to see others was helpful. In my opinion the Cluny Museum should be eliminated and perhaps replaced by the Army Museum which was excellent. (Or Rodin Museum) With the Rick Steve's Paris book, the neighborhood walks were great. We paid close attention to advice for restaurants, walks, safety and overall tips. THe river cruise was lovely.

The tour provided us with a complete, informative, organized, and enjoyable experience for our first trip to Europe. Our tour guide knew so much and taught us a lot about the area and the history of the country. The ease of having everything arranged, with the flexibility of some free time really made for a stress free experience.

"Marie was great, her knowledge was awesome, as was the other guides. The WOW for us was Elizbeth and the trip to the Orsay. The other thing that was amazing was the food. It is one thing to print a schedule, another to make it work. Our tour guide, Virginie, modified each day's agenda based on weather conditions. She was outstanding - delighting us with local treats from each of the areas being visited. We really had a taste of Paris! The guides for the Marais, the Louvre, and Versailles were excellent. Everything from the hotel room, to our rides on the metro was PERFECT! Each meal was indeed a MOVEABLE FEAST!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our evening at the Louvre was insightful. It was not just about the painter, the sculptor, or the art object - but the historical context in which it was presented. There are hidden images within the pieces that reveal a greater story. Afterwards, we had dinner and wine at the Café Marly (attached to the Louvre). We were seated at a table with an open window view of the lighted large pyramid. As the moon shone on the pyramid below, we realized it was once-in-a-lifetime moment. WOW!"

I had a wonderful time and an excellent tour guide. Everything flowed nicely and the only thing I would suggest changing is when our tour met museum guides, they all spent too much time explaining just a few art subjects. It seem more like an art history lesson than a tour of a museum. Everyone on my tours was great and many of us exchanged travel and personal information through out our tour. I'm a single traveler so I feel the extra charge for a single room is a bit steep as well.

Our tour experience was simply outstanding. It was well structured with a good amount of time spent with the group, but allowing for personal time too. Small modifications were made to the itinerary, where necessary, and were explained to us the first day of the tour. The daily itinerary was posted in the hotel lobby the evening prior. Expectations were made clear to everyone. Getting around on the Metro, bus, or RER train was easy. We walked a great deal and were successful in that regard.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I could say that learning more about Marie Antoinette during the Versailles tour, or seeing the inside of Sacre Coeur during the Montmartre walk, or seeing 'Liberty Leading the People' during the Louvre tour were all wow moments - even that time we were targeted by three young pick pockets on the Metro was a wow moment. But, ultimately, my biggest wow moment was our Rick Steves Tour Guide. She made every moment, every experience, of our tour richer, just by being herself."

Paris was on my bucket list forever, but because I didn't speak the language I was intimidated. After the fire at Notre Dame I was afraid that I had waited too long to visit, but that wasn't the case. From the world class museums to the walks through Parisian neighborhoods the tour was the perfect mix of organized touring & time off to visit other attractions on our own. The trip to Versailles was the cherry on top of a week that was just perfect.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several ( of course The Louvre, Sainte-Chapelle, The Orsey Museum and Versailles), but as corny as it may sound the night cruise on the Seine following our last dinner together while sharing a champagne toast with everyone on our tour was the perfect way to say au revoir."

Virginie made the tour feel like we were all family. This was our first Rick Steves' tour and it surpassed our expectations! Every little detail was taken care of and we could just relax and enjoy ourselves. It is so helpful that they spend a little time at the beginning of the trip to get you familiar with the local Metro systems so you can use it on your own when you are enjoying your free time. We did a lot of walking, but it was a great way to justify eating so much of the wonderful French food!

This tour gave me a chance to learn about Paris in a lot of different ways. Staying in the Rue Cler neighborhood was comfortable and let me experience Paris culture when we had time on our own. I loved the tours of the different arrondissements. The group meals were delicious and fun. Our guide made sure we felt comfortable using the metro so I felt empowered to go places. The tour was well organized, fun, and went pretty smoothly.

"The last time I was in Paris I had a difficult time interacting with locals. Our guide gave us some great tips on local culture and what to say and their version of manners and this time I got to experience how wonderful people in Paris can be. I got to interact in a positive way with local people on this trip and that was amazing."

As a couple traveling to Europe for the first time, participating in this tour was perfect. We relaxed the reigns and enjoyed each others company without the stress of navigating a new country/language.. We quickly felt at ease given great guidance from our tour guide Marie and the hotel staff.. The ratio of group to independent time was just right. We were able to see the "big hitters" as a group and then make an educated decision about where & what we wanted to see more of on our own.

When To Go & Weather

Paris is a vibrant city to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Visiting between November and March, the weather is colder and wetter, but the city still feels lively and has the benefit of being less touristy.
