Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Sleep in Paris (6 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including visits to a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. We'll end our afternoon at the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages, home to the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin, and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

This was my 2nd trip to Paris & my first semi solo trip. This trip was AMAZABALLS! I would recommend this trip to anyone you asked! I wanted to learn Paris w/the ability to do on my own (completely solo) in the future. This trip gave me the SKILLS to do just that!

"That would be the tour guides! Every single one was knowledgeable, approachable, and inspired me to continue to learn about the subject once home. I rode a Paris bus by myself! I know it may not sound BIG, but to me it was. I STEPPED outside of my comfortable zone and it was great!"

This was my second Rick Steves tour and it did not disappoint. The hotel was lovely and steps away from many sites. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very good! It is an active tour with lots of walking and standing so be prepared. I was there at the end of October and it was perfect weather.

Pace to fast and strenuous. Our fault for not expecting this. The Metro is barbaric. Of course using it at rush hour is difficult. I got shoved off the train on purpose by someone who was not even getting off. He said I should get off and let others off, then get back on. All in 8 seconds. Maybe you need a Paris My Way tour that does not include the Metro. We used a taxi some and had great experiences there. Wish we had done so sooner. Tour is excellent value for the money.

"Paris did not disappoint! It was really more beautiful than expected and mostly clean. Typical street scenes of cafes, flower shops and pastry shops were very stunning. Our neighborhood in the 7th was fabulous. We said everyday, we liked it better than the other neighborhoods we visited."

This was the trip of a lifetime for me. At 70, and after back surgery, I wasn't sure I would ever be able to see Paris... much less survive "strenuous" walking. But I did and it was fabulous. Arnaud was a fabulous guide. We saw all of the breathtaking highlights and learned volumes of history. It was an incredible experience that I would recommend to anyone who has only a week to spend on vacation. Arrive a day early and stay a day later. Turning 71 in Paris was a dream come true.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Too many WOW" moments to narrow to just one. It may be a cliche, but seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night from our boat ride on the Seine was a WOW. It was breathtakingly beautiful. The Palace de Versailles, the Louvre, and the Monet room at the Musee de l''Orangerie were beyond spectacular. Seeing all of the original art I've known about all of my life was a surreal experience...it brought tears to my eyes as did the stained glass of Sainte-Chapelle and Notre Dame. All WOW!"

This tour was a great way to experience Paris for the first time. We saw so many "must see" sites and we learned a lot of practical tips from Patrick. We were Paris metro experts and fully utilized our metro passes. I don't think we would have mastered that on our own. We saw and did more in our one week than many people I know have done on multiple trips to Paris. A great tour, well worth it.

Wallet stolen before trip began.....and yes, I do know how to protect what I carry, so a moment of not being careful meant an evening cancelling credit cards. Passport safe. Patrick helped so much, and really single handedly saved the trip for me. Then the sniffles started late the week of the tour. I became a fed up snit with the guide at l'Orangerie. A reductionist pedant. The museum sold me several books and I became my cheerful self again. I would take the tour again.

Our Paris trip with Rick Steves was magical. Our tour guide, Marie, was knowledgeable and interesting. She gave us insights into the current French culture as we would head out each day to visit important historical places in Paris. Marie helped us understand the stories behind the historical events. Loved walking home from an excellent tour at the Louvre, along side the Seine, tour of Monet's paintings at the Orangerie and walk through Monmartre. Fun tour members and wondrous meals together...

Our guide Marie was impressive. So patient and so knowledgeable about Paris. To me it's the back stories that make the trip relatable and she knew them well. All the guides at the different locations were amazing. I loved having time on our own to revisit some sites again. Loved the wine tasting. We had a great group of people on the tour. I would say that there were more strenuous walking days than moderate, so be prepared with good shoes! All in all a great trip!

I had a great time! This was my first time traveling alone without my family members and I had no trouble at all making friends with the people on the tour. I loved that we arrived at museums and sites at optimal times, we didn't have to wait to get into museums, and had tour guides. This is my 4th RS tour. My first "City" tour. Because I'm already a fairly self-sufficient traveler, the City tour appealed to me because it had lots of free time built in. That's a pro and a con, of course, since it also means I didn't have as much time to get to know my fellow travelers, which is something I look forward to on these tours. I love the access that the museum and metro passes give us - that plus the hotel location were worth the price!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have "un petit peu" of French. At Sainte-Chappelle, I briefly sat on some steps in sight of the WC entrance. Tour guide brings a bunch of teen girls by me, all chattering. I smiled in sympathy (cuz teen girls), and she says something funny in French. I laugh. She then tells me about a Spanish group she once had. I nod and smile. American couple comes by, lost, and I reflexively help them in English. Tour guide laughs and says "I thought you spoke French!" "I do, a little!" We laughed."

I felt this was an excellent introduction to the history and attractions of Paris. It had a little more free time that I anticipated and my wife and I didn't plan and use this time as effectively as we could have. Walking the old streets of Paris and imagining what it must have been like to live there centuries ago was thrilling. Likewise visiting all the key attractions (Louvre, Versailles, Notre-Dame, etc.) with an expert local guide and avoiding the long lines was great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was somewhat concerned about visiting Paris as I had heard that the Parisians can be extremely rude and difficult to interact with. Thus aside from the remarkable history and attractions of Paris, my "wow" moment was letting go of my preconceived biases which resulted in having some great conversations with local Parisians during our off tour meal times. Every person we interacted with was warm, friendly and engaging. Just normal people. Now and can't wait to return for another visit."

The tour provided an in-depth experience of Paris with the right balance between planed excursions and free time. The small, well-located hotel was a delight with an accommodating staff and well-appointed rooms. Our guide, Arnaud, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his city. We are already planning our next Rick Steves adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour in Paris. It embraced so many iconic experiences that you just have to have when you go to Paris! It was packed with daily excursions but well-paced, and provided plenty of variety. Arnaud is a very experienced guide and he helped us to navigate around the city when we struck out on our own. The trip managed to be both stimulating and relaxing and was always fun.

"My favorite "wow" moment was the guided tour of the Orangerie Museum. We had a superb guide to the amazing artworks that are housed there. The entire trip was outstanding for those who want a "crash course" in becoming familiar with Paris. The trip is fast-paced but very comprehensive when it comes to teaching travelers how to get around Paris and what to see. I thought the trip was excellent and only wished I had more time in Paris!

"I think the trip to Versailles was my most favorite moment, but it's difficult to pin-point that exact "wow" moment. There were so many "wow" moments when it comes to Paris. As I've discussed with my travel partner, the only city that could compete with Paris is Paris!"

The Tour is a great way to learn about Paris and gives ample opportunity to explore on your own armed with the information and tools offered by an experienced guide. By the time I got to Paris and the tour began what I thought was a slight cold was worse, which probably influenced my opinion of Paris. Little of the tour was appealing and I had to skip two days of events. Returning to Paris after traveling independently for two weeks didn't change my opinion even though now well. Although I was careful to always use the formal greeting to avoid appearing rude, I perceived an unfriendly attitude in some of the Parisians I met.

Paris and Italy were my retirement rewards for working very hard for 48 years raising a daughter and grandchild on a tight budget with little time off for vacation trips. I spent five months walking hundreds of miles and stairs to prepare myself. Needless to say, my expectations were extremely high considering my efforts and patience. I was not disappointed with my Tours as they were both equally well planned with the highest caliber of Tour and Local Guides and quality of sites chosen.

Intense. Active. Informative. Indredible tour leader (she's a gem - a true asset to the Rick Steves' group). Appreciated all the extra touches Rebecca had for us. Great group meals. Good variety of tour experiences. Liked having part of the day 'free'. Appreciated not only having the Metro and Museum passes but learning how to use them. Liked the personal audio system. Liked our group mix, which Rebecca worked with to our benefit.

The food was amazing, The service was incredible. And for us, provided a more refined French dining experience than would might not have otherwise had. The Bateau Mouche Seine River cruise was, as well memorable. The timing of our cruise coincided with a special event where the Eiffel Tower was lit with alternating colours."

I would do another Rick Steves tour any day, hands down. There was a nice blend of group activities and independent travel time. There were crucial cultural mores shared and practiced that helped to genuinely engage with the locals. Noticeably, especially along side other group tours at busy sites, is the quality of information and caring shared by our guide. Group members are friendly, fun to be with and lead interesting lives too making the whole experience a joy.

First of all, this is the second Rick Steves Paris Tour we've taken; the first one was in September of 2016. We loved it so much that we took another. It was even better than the first because the sun was out almost every day, and we really got to pick and choose which places to revisit with our guide, and what things we would do on our own. We now know the metro system and the bus routes, and are confident that, next time, we can visit Paris on our own !

Michaelanne was the same top quality guide I have come to expect for my 3rd tour. The depth of her knowledge of Paris, specifically, and France, generally, was impressive. This was my first city tour and, although it was nice to not have to repack and move every 2 days, I missed the bus rides, where I think the camaraderie of the group of travelers is enhanced. The group was a good mix of newbies and oldbies of RS tours. There were 4 groups continuing on to other tours, making me jealous!

This was my 2nd time in Paris and my 4th Rick Steves tour. Once again my expectations were met. The 1st time was 2 years ago on the Paris & The Heart of France tour. Rick Steves' tour #2 is now over and I can't think of anything we didn't see in Paris that we should have. Great sights, great food and enough personal time to do some things friends had suggested. Though I had already been to Louvre, Versailles, Invalides, Eiffel, Arc, Moulin Rouge - this tour really gave me the in depth history & details that were glossed over on previous travels. I saw the palace only on TV, in books, and on the Internet but to see it in person made me feel thrilled with excitement. A bonus was to see the palace gardens and Marie Antoinette's cottages."

I liked my Paris tour so much! I enjoyed our gorgeous, quaint room in a lovely family owned hotel that was situated in a wonderful Paris neighborhood. Virginie taught us the metro and layout of Paris right away. A couple of new friends from our group and I had so much fun walking, eating, seeing historical places and museums, on our own. Paris is such a gorgeous city both in daytime and evening! Our travel group excursions, dinners, and tours were fabulous!

"After a group outing, walking with Collin and Peggy (new friends) from Notre Dame Cathedrel to the Eiffel Tower, along the Seine. We watched sports enthusiasts, saw wonderful statues and monuments, peacefully sat by the river a few times---spectacular! On last evening boat ride -Virginie led the fun and merriment, then gathered us afterwards on a bridge, with the Eiffel Tower sparking in the background. We linked arms to say our goodbyes-Virginie gave us each, momentos and French farewells!"

Starting before the trip, I thought the communications were great. Upon arrival, I was thrilled with the hotel and it's location. Loved our small group, the way the tour was organized with plenty of free time, and especially loved our guide, Antoine. Overall, tour was good. The accommodations were nice; quaint, polished, friendly and centralized come to mind. The tour portion of the tour that I would recommend altering is the 2 hour "get to know you" session. I felt this was overtly redundant as Rick Steves does a fabulous job of sending put the itinerary, tour expectations and a list of travelers on tour. I felt 2 hours was 1.5 hours too long to have a "sit and get" after long flights. The tour pace overall felt slow.

This was the first Rick Steve's tour that my husband and I have taken. What a wonderful experience! The selected hotel in Paris was in District 7 which is centrally located and near the metro. Loved our stay at Hotel Londres Eiffel. The breakfast was amazing and the accommodations so comfortable. We arrived 4 days early so that we could tour Normandy, WWI sites, and Giverney on our own. The sites that were included in the tour were outstanding. Antoine Bonfils is tour guide extraordinaire!

"So many WOW moments. The expert tour guides at all visited sites (Versailles, Louvre) and Antoine Bonfils gave us the opportunity to KNOW and understand Paris. Not only the history and historical sites but the culture and the people. We came up the steps at the second floor of the chapel and I gasped. So much beauty."

This was a fabulous tour. It covered many of the main sights in Paris in only seven days. I do not think you could have seen everything we did if you didn't have it all arranged for you. The price was reasonable too. As I do not speak French it was also very helpful to have such a good guide. The location of our hotel was great and very close to the Eiffel Tower. It was a small boutique hotel with very good service. The breakfast was good too.

Seeing Paris in four and one half days is not easy, but this tour hit 90% of the "must see" places in this lovely, old city and some. For our first RS tour, we were not disappointed. We felt we got to see some places in depth.....yet not so deep we couldn't go back time and again. I loved that we were able to learn how to navigate the city so we were not tied down to a group for the entire time. We actually got quite a bit of free time to make sure we saw all the sites that we wanted to. Next time I go to Paris, I will know how to work the metro and bus systems which is amazing.

This tour introduced us to the French culture helping us appreciate the country and its people. Great balance between guided tours and free time on our own. The Metro passes and museum passes were great. The tour gave us very good instructions on how to get around and made us confident to explore on our own. We will return!

The closet in my room at the Hotel Londres Eiffel was so small and inconveniently tucked in a corner so that it was almost unuseable. Coffee pots in the rooms would have been greatly appreciated instead of having to run down to the breakfast room each morning to get coffee or tea. The staircase in this hotel is a tiny, spiral staircase that has stairs so narrow that it was DANGEROUS to use!! And being up on the top floor made it imperative for me to use the elevator!

I enjoyed the tour and the Eiffel Tower neighborhood, but this was not the best Rick Steves tour. This was my fourth tour with the company, and while the other three would all be tied for Number One, this one was definitely fourth. The pacing of the activities just seemed off. While it is definitely desirable to have time on our own, I would have liked more group interaction, shared meals, time during a walking tour to share a coffee, or explore an area while there instead doubling back later.

I cannot express enough how excellent I believed this tour experience to be. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me and I am so happy I got to experience it with this tour group. All the events were impeccably planned out and went off without a hitch. I can't remember a moment when anyone on the trip wasn't happy. Everyone we came into contact with from our main guide, Michaelanne, to all the other local guides - were kind, knowledgeable and engaging.

"There were so many moments that I found fascinating, and it is hard to pick just one "wow" moment. The Eiffel tower was magnificent of course. My favorite museum was the MUSÉE DE L'ORANGERIE, but I really just loved walking the streets of Paris. My favorite part of the trip was to walk around and see all the sites. Our team guide, Michael Ann was outstanding. I think that she did her best to be informative, available and communicative with the group. The actual tour was great - I was a first time Rick Steves participant and it was my first time in Paris. The destinations, the information and the guides were great. The trip to the Louvre was a bit overwhelming and not as fulfilling as I would have liked but that was due to the enormity of the space.

The tour was everything I expected it to be, except I'm not as young as I was in 2001, when I took a Rick Steves tour of northern Italy with tour guide Jamie and 18 tourists. This tour not only included the "must do" highlights, but educated you in getting around Paris in a way that encouraged exploring on your own. This was my first time in Europe and first Rick Steve's Tour and I felt very comfortable with our laid out itinerary each day and what was ahead. As a group we spend a majority of the day together, but also had time throughout each day to go off on our own and do some more exploring! Our group and Rebecca meshed so well together and really made the trip!

First tour & Rick Steve's Tour. Pleased with the entire experience. Great website, plentiful info and good customer service response. Rebecca is fantastic.Warm, outgoing, knowledgeable, fun and patient. Appreciated having a "native".Hotel Londres Eiffel and staff was excellent. Good itinerary & plenty of free time to explore more. I suggest alternating pace from strenuous to moderate throughout the week instead of more strenuous at the end.

The tour exceeded our expectations. Our guide, Virginie, was awesome - she made everyone at ease, explained things clearly, showed us the sights as well as familiarized us with French customs and culture. We never could have seen or done as much on our own. The guides adapted our schedule to unforeseen circumstances - train strikes - so that we never missed any sights.

We had a wonderful time, and enjoyed every minute in Paris! We had been looking forward to this trip for a couple of years, and it did not disappoint. We liked the pace of tour, the cultural and historical aspects, the amount of free time, and our hotel - both the hotel itself, and the location of the hotel.

The Rick Steve's Paris tour was a wonderful experience! I enjoyed all the walking tours in the neighborhoods and the free time in the afternoons. Virginie and Linda really helped to demistify Paris and gave us the tools so we could navigate our way on our own through the city when needed. They answered all our questions and when they didn't have an immediate answer, they were able to find it and give to us later. They were flexible after train strikes forced us to switch out day at Versailles with our day at Montmatre.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Montmatre was a wow moment. As was the boat tour on the last night. I noticed that it is scheduled for earlier in the week, in the itinerary. I liked that we did it on our last night. I was so pleased with the Rick Steve's Paris tour and all the excellent tour guides! I got to see many, many lovely sights and best of all walk around the Paris neighborhoods, soaking up the charm. Our hotel had a wonderful location, 5 minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower, and it was perfect. I felt that we were well-looked after and we were schooled in how to get around Paris and how to behave. It was a wonderful week in Paris with a strong focus on art, museums and the character of various neighborhoods. Toni and Antoine did a great job of teaching us how to navigate the city on our own. Our various museum guides added depth to our museum visits. Cerise, in particular, made the Orangerie a tour highlight. It was a lovely introduction to a city with so much more to offer.

This was our first Rick Steves tour. Normally we would venture out on our own, but we were concerned with our ability to communicate with the French. Julie was a great help in teaching us how to use the Metro, how to handle ourselves in bars and restaurants, and just generally helping us with etiquette and cultural norms. We had another great time in Paris. I have spent time in Paris for the past 40 years but my wife is finally learning the city. Toni was a wonderful and resourceful tour guide. The selection of sites and museums worked very well around the rain and what was closed. My "overall experience" was out of RS tours control. I spent 3 days "touring" the American Hospital before the RS tour. Got pickpocketed Thursday morning on the subway but - now I have even more exciting stories to tell !

We chose Rick Steves Paris tour for the ease and convenience of planning. We wanted to have a unique hotel, pre-purchased tickets and tour guides so this was the ideal choice. The tour far surpassed our expectations, and we came away with memories for a lifetime. Our guide Rolinka was incredibly knowledgeable, as well as warm and caring. When asked about the tour I state that we didn't "visit" Paris, but we had an education on how to "stay" in Paris. It gave us travel confidence.

Apart from the cold weather, the trip was amazing. The tour is ideal for someone who is looking for a "Paris immersion" -- the program really helps you learn how to navigate the excellent Parisian subway and bus system -- very clean, efficient and safe! The tour takes the stress out of visiting a new European city, and includes all the tools one needs for a great experience: including the subway/bus pass, Museum pass, and local knowledge! The itinerary provides a great balance of organized activities and ample time to explore on your own.

Overall I would give our experience a thumbs up and would recommend it to others. Staffing of the experience, from hotel to guide were by well versed, professional and patient people. I could tell they all had a sense of humor about what they do as often it is necessary when dealing with the expectations of American tourists. I have been to Paris before, long ago, however enjoyed the suggestions and directions of going to the iconic areas and sites of Paris.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I wouldnt't characterize my wow as favorable. I was surprised how crowded Paris was even during the off season. There was some hope that crowds would be avoided, but the biggest one came at Versailles, when the surge of tour groups, pushing and shoving to get inside became quite aggressive. It did not make me want to go back. There must be a better way of controlling crowds at this site, however realize it is not in the hands of your company at that level."

Patrick can include the knowledge of a lifetime into one week in Paris, but he makes it entertaining and fun. You never realized you could walk and learn so much in this short period. My husband, who was certain he would not enjoy this tour at all, was a convert by about hour two. Once you have this week, you can navigate the metro like a champ, find the best spots in all the museums, eat your way across the city, and walk anywhere with confidence.
