Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Sleep in Paris (6 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and a visit to the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. We'll end our afternoon at the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages, home to the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin, and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

This was my first tour. So I wasn't sure what to expect. Our tour guide, Rebecca, was tremendous. She was informative, engaging and constantly upbeat. In each area of Paris we went to we had terrific specialists that added so much to the experience. Their knowledge (and love of their subject) and ability to impart it to the group was outstanding. I learned so much. The Hotel was well located, clean, comfortable with a helpful staff. The group dinners were good. It was a great trip.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'll pick two - Versailles."It's good to be the King!) And The Musee de l'Orangerie. I knew of the Water Lilly paintings. But the background on Monet that the guide gave us added so much to the experience. So much so that we made sure on out way to Normandy to stop and visit to Monet's garden at Giverney."

Fantastic tour. We are active seniors looking for a way to experience Europe for the first time and the Rick Steve's experience did not disappoint. We had the most fantastic tour guide with Rebecca. She taught us how to be a smart safe traveler as well as how to be a good, polite visitor in a foreign country. Our plan was to use the tour to get to know our way around Paris and then we stayed an additional 4 days to go back and hit additional sites.

Marie is an outstanding person that represents your brand with a very high level of competence. It was our first experience with your company as well as our first time in Paris. My only complaint was the choice of restaurants for the first night meal. The seating was crowded and uncomfortable. Not a good way to start the tour. I am very glad that it was the only uncomfortable moment.

This was my first visit to Paris. I wanted your experience to show me the basic important parts. I stayed 3 extra days and felt confident on the metro, and able to go where I wanted after time with the tour. Michelann helped me find a cafe on Rue Montorgeuil between the organ concert at St. Eustache and the 7:30 concert at St. Chapelle which worked great. She was encouraging, good-spirited and fun as well as very knowledgeable. I want to take the E. France tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'd say seeing the house garden on Montmartre where Renoir did his famous garden dance painting was quite special for me. Our guide there, Cherise, was a very good speaker. I loved her deep knowledge of the subject and ability to articulate it. And, outside of the tour I was able to use my new familiarity with the city to come upon Delacroix's atelier garden tucked away off of Rue Furstemburg near St. Germaine de Pre."

Paris is amazing, with its monuments, artwork, culture, and natural beauty. Michaelanne made it come alive with her explanations about what we were experiencing. Our tour group was extraordinarily cohesive and I feel like I've made several new lifelong friends. I honestly did not want the week to end. I would love to travel with this group again and have Michaelanne lead our group. The whole experience was a complete dream come true.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My wow moment was learning how to use the metro. Knowing that I have that skill will change the way I travel in the future. It's probably not what most people would choose after spending a week in Paris, since Paris is "Wow!" everywhere you look, but having this new transferable skill will improve my future travel experiences and it was something I hadn't expected on this trip. Kudos again to Michaelanne for teaching us so well."

This action-packed week in Paris was exceptional. The itinerary combined organized time as well as a generous amount of free time to pack as much additional sightseeing as one could manage. By the end of the week, I was totally exhausted, but in a good way. I was able to see all the major venues that I had planned on visiting including some additional experiences that I had not anticipated.

I first should admit that I am not extremely fond of packaged tours, but I'll have to say this one was exceptional. A great combination of a chance to experience the most important aspects of this location, plus ample time to explore on your own.....a good balance. There was simply not enough time to soak it all up, but I think we touched on the most important sights.

This was my first Rick Steves tour and it exceeded my expectations! Michaelanne was an excellent guide, communicating very clearly, offering practical solutions to problems travelers were most likely to encounter;and, possessing a monumental fund of knowledge of French and Parisian history and current events. I especially enjoyed the balance of scheuled touring and "free" time to explore, using the skills Michaelanne taught us. The "specialty" guides were excellent, too.

Favorite "WOW" moment

Can't imagine a better guide than Michaelanne! She was the embodiment of the tour's overall structure -- offered lots of expertise and guidance while in no way being a smothering presence. Lots of room for independent exploration with plenty of support whenever we wanted it -- ç'est merveilleaux!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It was a toss-up. After the group's walking tour of the Marais, my wife and I headed over to the Centre Pompidou. The Pompidou's collection was wonderful overall, but Constantin Brancusi's studio (on the grounds of the museum) was an absolute "wow!" Rivaling that for "wow" moment of the trip was the group dinner at Le 7eme Vin. The food and the hosts were so wonderful we went back the next evening to find another warm welcome and wonderful cuisine yet again."

We are first timers with Rick Steves tours and we were not disappointed. We had a fantastic week exploring Paris. Our guide, Michaelanne, was organized, very knowledgeable and delightful.( The other guides at various sites as well were also very knowledgeable and imparted interesting and valuable information to the group.) Our group bonded well and we very much enjoyed being together, sharing our lives with one another and at the tours'end decided that we we would stay connected through FB/email

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We can't say we had one WOW moment, but rather each place had its own uniqueness. The only disappointment, if one can call it that, was the boat ride on the Seine. There were too many persons on the boat & it was daunting to hear the speaker over the din of the crowd."

The Paris tour covered most of the traditional highlights that the city has to offer. Michaelanne was a superb guide committed to ensuring that the entire group experienced a well informed historical perspective on this city. I had taken the My Way Alpine tour last year and comparing the two I think for me I prefer the My Way style. But I could not have asked for a better introduction to Paris a city I had never been too. The best introduction to European travel I can imagine. Not only will see many familiar landmarks, you're going to learn how to navigate independently. I saw the sites but also learned something about French culture. You're not only changing locations in travel, you're witnessing a different way of life. Many of the attractions cater to groups. You'll see long lines but won't be spending a big chunk of your time in a queue. Read the travel guide, learn some phrases, YOU'RE IN PARIS !

The Paris tour was exceptional and our guide worked around itinerary adjustments, demonstrations, holiday closures, etc. Tour participants were friendly, open and interesting. However to experience Paris from a small neighborhood hotel and walking the streets and sitting and eating at cafes made the experience more meaningful and valuable to me. It was more than seeing "all the sites" as I really learned about the culture and history of Paris and France. I enjoyed the people in the tour group much more than I anticipated.

Great hotel and perfect location for enjoying Paris. The itinerary was very well planned and included free time for personal interests. Our guide, Toni, was so Special. She was very knowledgeable and extremely kind. Loved all the extra experiences she arranged for us. Toni was great in teaching us to manage the subway system and just getting around on our own. All tour members were friendly and congenial. Enjoyed receiving subway and museum passes as part of tour.

Enjoyed and learned from our guide, Toni, liked very much all the other group members, and loved Hotel Londres Eiffel! i learned so much from all our guides, loved learning how to use the metro and visiting so many interesting, unique, beautiful-in-their-own-way places. History was fascinating. I want to learn more now. Food, especially macaroons??, was wonderful, natives, especially shopkeepers were friendly. And I got to use my long-ago French minor occasionally.

I loved the tour, especially the hotel with its staff and location. The group was friendly and our guide Toni was the best. But the reason I do not give this 5 stars is because I believe that we visit too many churches and museums and that is not all there is to a city's culture, what about the food or music, would have loved a food tour or a concert at the Grand Opera House. The Cluny museum could have been omitted.

This was a wonderful tour! When I was last in Paris as a poor college student, I did not do anything right. So having the guides, the Metro pass, the museum pass made this so much better. The mix of organized events and open options was very nice.

"My favorite "wow" moment was an extra coordinated by our tour guide. On the way to dinner we had the option to meet early and go up the Arc de Triomphe. Being up there are sunset, watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle, and having the full moon was just wonderful."

Great overview of the city and the history. You get to see all the top sites, with the exception of the Eiffel Tower, but there is plenty of time during the tour to do that on your own if you want. The Hotel is in a prime location (blocks from the Eiffel Tower) and the Metro and bus system were really easy to use.

This was my fourth Rick Steves tour, so of course I had high expectations. And yes, it was wonderful - from the lovely hotel (Hotel Londres Eiffel), to our excellent tour guide (Patrick), to the varied and expansive itinerary. All great and so memorable!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have to say it was walking out into our neighborhood to explore after getting settled in to our hotel. My favorite part of travel is absorbing the experience - the setting, the people, the culture. I will say that as I was walking on rue St. Dominique to the Orsay Museum, I came upon a magnificent church (?) smallish cathedral (?) in the middle of town with a lovely park surrounding, I was just astounded at the thought of having something so historic and beautiful in a neighborhood."

After 11 years of waiting I finally got a chance to see Paris. I was so happy. The tour group was nice, Parisians formal and polite. Lots of walking on this tour 5-8 miles a day. I had to get a pair of sketchers looking shoes and gave my boots to the sales girl to toss or keep. The art scene here is incredible. Tour was fast paced , saw a lot and by the end of the week I was tired and ready to go home. It was a perfect 7 days in Paris. Good food and wine.

Wow, the entire tour, food and hotel were all incredible! We had so much fun and created so many memories, my kids want to go back on another trip today! It was an interesting time to be in Paris, a week framed with civil protests and holiday lights. We saw as much of the city as one can in five full days, learned to navigate the underground Metro stations, ate hearty brasserie food, walked ten miles some days, enjoyed vistas stretching from the Eiffel Tower to the Arc de Triumph to Sacré-Cœur to Versailles, slept soundly in our characteristic™ hotel, enjoyed getting to know our diverse tour members, and, in the end, felt at home there.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We got a glimpse into the French way of things as we strolled the Champs-Élysées on Sunday morning, observing holiday shoppers dodging workers removing plywood from the posh shop windows as life returned to normal after a day of protests. The French people are not shy about expressing their displeasure--mass protests are a part of that ethos. And of course the long history, architecture, art, and charms of Paris will all return to mind as I replay our Parisian adventures in my mind."

I really enjoyed the combination of guided walking tours through the various neighborhoods of Paris combined with substantial free time to explore on our own. Our guide was an outstanding guide who explained many small details about life in France and Paris along with the major themes of the tour. A wonderful time in and around Paris--seeing so many renowned and historic sites, learning so much about France, interacting with the French people, sampling foods & wines & beers... especially with the seasonal/Christmas decor and spirit on display! December weather in Paris wasn't bad at all (I wrongly packed for colder temp's), and at most locations & times the crowds weren't nearly as overwhelming as they are at warmer seasons. Our guide Virginie was a warm, delightful, knowledgeable leader.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm not one for "favorites" but was properly awed by so many Parisian sights & settings that I thoroughly overloaded my camera with images & future memories (that I'm just beginning to process & share). Our good luck with mostly avoiding the rain was also notable! And having no obstruction from the "gilets jaunes" protesters (while also avoiding problems from the Strasbourg shooting when my wife and I were there just before the tour)."

This tour is crafted in an ideal way. 1) Daily group activities: museum visits with an expert historian, wine tasting, boat ride, group meals in French restaurants, ... 2) Daily time to make your Paris visit your own. The RS tour provides a week long public transportation pass and museum pass to enable free quick entry into all the major sites. 3) Hotel is located near the Eiffel Tower and is expertly managed. 4) Our guide rounded out our experience teaching French customs.

This was a return visit for me and a FIRST visit for my Travelling companion. What a glorious week! THe weather cooperated, the political scene was quiet, the metro was working and the group of fellow travellers were delightful and interesting. Winter in Paris means less tourists, as well. Having extra space to meander about in the museums and the streets is amazing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My Travelling companion and I took a self-guided tour through the Palais Garnier where we watched a crew work on an upcoming ballet's stage lighting cues. THe theater was alive with memories of sugarplum fairies and fleets of swans which had graced the stage over the centuries. The Chagall Ceiling was a huge "ooo - ah" moment for me. I'd forgotten how bright and vivid the colors were. The many elaboratel and ornate foyers were a surprise as well."

I would definitely go on another Rick Steves' tour. I think we got much more out of our trip (in terms of both the knowledge/experiences imparted, as well as the sheer number of places visited) than if we had gone to Paris on our own. The quality of the guides (Patrick, as well as local guides) was probably my favorite aspect. I also liked that we had a lot of time on our own. The biggest downside was that we were very tired by the end of the tour (many early mornings and late nights).

This tour is a great introduction to Paris. Our tour leader was very accommodating to the entire group. This was the trip of a lifetime for me. At 70, and after back surgery, I wasn't sure I would ever be able to see Paris... much less survive "strenuous" walking. But I did and it was fabulous. Arnaud was a fabulous guide. We saw all of the breathtaking highlights and learned volumes of history. Pace to fast and strenuous. Our fault for not expecting this. The Metro is barbaric. Of course using it at rush hour is difficult. I got shoved off the train on purpose by someone who was not even getting off. He said I should get off and let others off, then get back on. All in 8 seconds. Maybe you need a Paris My Way tour that does not include the Metro. We used a taxi some and had great experiences there. Wish we had done so sooner. Tour is excellent value for the money.

I loved that everything was organized for us, yet we had time on our own. I loved the breakfasts at the hotel. I loved that we arrived at museums and sites at optimal times, we didn't have to wait to get into museums, and had tour guides. I loved that we stayed in a neighborhood where there were local shops and restaurants to visit. The location was so convenient to many sites, the metro, and bus lines. The people who were on the tour with us were all very nice and interesting.

"We had an orientation downstairs at Sainte Chapelle, then we mounted the circular stairs to go into the main cathedral. I left the darkened staircase and stepped into the cathedral. I wasn't prepared to see stained glass all around me, reaching high into the air, with sunlight streaming through all of those colored windows. It took my breath away! And after that all I could say was, "Wowwww!""

Our Paris trip with Rick Steves was magical. Our tour guide, Marie, was knowledgeable and interesting. She gave us insights into the current French culture as we would head out each day to visit important historical places in Paris. Marie helped us understand the stories behind the historical events. Loved walking home from an excellent tour at the Louvre, along side the Seine, tour of Monet's paintings at the Orangerie and walk through Monmartre. Fun tour members and wondrous meals together...

This is my 4th RS tour. My first "City" tour. Because I'm already a fairly self-sufficient traveler, the City tour appealed to me because it had lots of free time built in. That's a pro and a con, of course, since it also means I didn't have as much time to get to know my fellow travelers, which is something I look forward to on these tours. I love the access that the museum and metro passes give us - that plus the hotel location were worth the price!

"I have "un petit peu" of French. At Sainte-Chappelle, I briefly sat on some steps in sight of the WC entrance. Tour guide brings a bunch of teen girls by me, all chattering. I smiled in sympathy (cuz teen girls), and she says something funny in French. I laugh. She then tells me about a Spanish group she once had. I nod and smile. American couple comes by, lost, and I reflexively help them in English. Tour guide laughs and says "I thought you spoke French!" "I do, a little!" We laughed."

An excellent tour and tour guide. It is a perfect introduction to Paris culture, transportantion and the most important tourist sites to visit. Our guide Michaelanne was efficient, well informed, and her enthusiam for all things Parisian was contagious. We had a good group that in just the short time of one week bonded well and enjoyed each others company. I felt this was an excellent introduction to the history and attractions of Paris. It had a little more free time that I anticipated and my wife and I didn't plan and use this time as effectively as we could have. Walking the old streets of Paris and imagining what it must have been like to live there centuries ago was thrilling. Likewise visiting all the key attractions (Louvre, Versailles, Notre-Dame, etc.) with an expert local guide and avoiding the long lines was great.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was somewhat concerned about visiting Paris as I had heard that the Parisians can be extremely rude and difficult to interact with. Thus aside from the remarkable history and attractions of Paris, my "wow" moment was letting go of my preconceived biases which resulted in having some great conversations with local Parisians during our off tour meal times. Every person we interacted with was warm, friendly and engaging. Just normal people. Now and can't wait to return for another visit."

By the time I got to Paris and the tour began what I thought was a slight cold was worse, which probably influenced my opinion of Paris. Little of the tour was appealing and I had to skip two days of events. Returning to Paris after traveling independently for two weeks didn't change my opinion even though now well. First of all, this is the second Rick Steves Paris Tour we've taken; the first one was in September of 2016. We loved it so much that we took another. Rick Steves' tour #2 is now over and I can't think of anything we didn't see in Paris that we should have. Great sights, great food and enough personal time to do some things friends had suggested. The timing for museums was perfect meaning there were just a few heads in my Mona Lisa photos. The second week was spent with another tour group which I will contrast below. I hope I have created a market for you in Canada and Australia.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Paris was filled with museums filled with art. My favorite part of the trip was not the sites but the history behind the buildings and art which Rebecca and our guides explained very well. If I were to pick one sight it would be Versailles with its gold trim. I now understand why there was a revolution."

This was our first "City Tour" via Rick Steves after several our tours through Rick Steves. Our Best of Paris Tour exceeded our expectations in literally all ways. We've heard Rick tall about Paris many times and make the comment Paris is a city you can continue to visit and enjoy...we now know why. We had a wonderful hotel in a great location near the Eiffel Tower and near transportation . The hotel staff was terrific only exceeded by our guide Rebecca. Perfect experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Paris is a series of special "wow"moments...from the venues to the food to the people of the City. We came early and went to and up the Eiffel Tower ...that experience set the tone for the week to follow...a true "wow" moment and life time dream. We finished our Tour the last night watching the Eiffel Tower at night...twinkling! Paris and our RS 7 day tour...wow!"

Although I'd been to Paris three times previously, there were some attractions I hadn't seen, yet still wanted to see. The itinerary of this tour fulfilled my desires! Plus, I could now go back to Paris and feel totally confident that I would be able to navigate the Metro to go anywhere I would wish! My only regret is that a can-can performance was not included; I didn't realize can-can is only performed in Montmartre.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Without hesitation, it was stepping into Sainte Chappelle. It was exactly as our guide had described - like going inside of a giant kaleidoscope! I've been to many cathedrals and basilicas in Europe, but this church is unique because of the spectacular stained glass, and the amount of it compared to the size of the church interior."

As it was my first trip to Europe, having a guided tour was the way to go! I enjoyed visiting the sites and neighborhoods of Paris but always felt rushed. I wanted to look around more. Couldn't understand why we couldn't leave 10 earlier to do it. I generally like listening to info about the history of things but too many of our guides went on way too much for my liking. I loved the artwork, museums, monuments, going to Versailles and exploring around Paris in the afternoons in spite of the smoke filled cafes. The dinners together were great.

Paris is a lovely city. There were lots of great neighborhoods and lots of free time to explore not just the museums, but also the restaurants, cafes and shopping. Tour guide Julie, was very informative and approachable. The Metro was easy to get around thanks to Julie teaching and showing us everyday as we went out, where we were, surrounding activities, as well as as way back to the Hotel. Bus 69 was also great and only a block from the hotel. I rode it all the way to the 20th Arrondissement

This tour answered all our needs and next time we visit, Paris will be more familiar and more enlightening on our own. The Palace itself with it's beautiful ornaments, paintings, and luxurious rooms really made me feel awestruck. Our Best of Paris in 7 Days Tour with Virginie from 8/19/18- 8/25/18 was a good experience and pleasant time to Paris. Verginie our guide is very professional, energetic, positive and warm personality. She is able to keep in touch with everybody and at the same time follow the general line of the trip. I had traveled to France 4 times before this tour. Each time focusing on different aspects of France/Paris. Though I had already been to Louvre, Versailles, Invalides, Eiffel, Arc, Moulin Rouge - this tour really gave me the in depth history & details that were glossed over on previous travels. In a nut shell... this was a really wonderful trip. I know more about the history, art & culture of France than I did on the other visits I made. Overall, well done.

Overall, tour was good. The accommodations were nice; quaint, polished, friendly and centralized come to mind. The tour portion of the tour that I would recommend altering is the 2 hour "get to know you" session. I felt this was overtly redundant as Rick Steves does a fabulous job of sending put the itinerary, tour expectations and a list of travelers on tour. I felt 2 hours was 1.5 hours too long to have a "sit and get" after long flights. The tour pace overall felt slow.

This was the first Rick Steve's tour that my husband and I have taken. What a wonderful experience! The selected hotel in Paris was in District 7 which is centrally located and near the metro. Loved our stay at Hotel Londres Eiffel. The breakfast was amazing and the accommodations so comfortable. We arrived 4 days early so that we could tour Normandy, WWI sites, and Giverney on our own. This was a fabulous tour. It covered many of the main sights in Paris in only seven days. I do not think you could have seen everything we did if you didn't have it all arranged for you. Seeing Paris in four and one half days is not easy, but this tour hit 90% of the "must see" places in this lovely, old city and some.
