Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Paris.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the resilient and legendary Notre-Dame and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. After free time for lunch, we'll regroup and stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, named for the language you'd have heard on these streets if you walked them in the Middle Ages. Then you'll be set free for the afternoon to explore more of the city.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. After free time for lunch and exploration, we'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Paris.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk, we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo and timeless treasures including the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 5: All Day at the Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet, or to zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Train: 1 hour. Sleep in Paris.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orsay Museum, home to the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art with works from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and beyond. Then you'll be free to visit the nearby Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and other fine works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. Or visit other places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

Rolinka was an amazing guide, but we have never had a guide who wasn't amazing (this is our fifth tour). She showed us the ropes about getting around on public transportation, and we had a great balance between group tour time and individual time (so that we could see or go back to things of interest). The hotel was great, cozy and friendly. The neighborhood became just that, our neighborhood. We would bump into our fellow travelers as neighbors. And Paris is amazing.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We went back to the Louvre, having learned to stay as far away from the Mona Lisa as possible to avoid the crushing crowds. While wandering the halls, I ended up standing in front of two Vermeers, and there was nobody in front of me. Nobody was taking a selfie. I could look at them unaccosted as long as I wanted. It was magical."

I thoroughly enjoyed our Paris experience as it was everything I have come to hope for, from a Rick Steves tour experience. We had a great opportunity to see many of the prime locations with outstanding guides, as well as lessons on how to navigate Paris safely. Ample free time to explore our own interests in the city and the tools to be able to make the most of our time. Rolinka was an absolute gem, a breath of sunshine even on our cloudy day. She made each day joy-filled and enjoyable!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had visited Tokyo on my own in 2019, and came across the "Gates of Hell" Rodin sculpture in Ueno Park. I took a photo at the time because it was so enormous and ornate. On one of our "free-time" portions of the day we chose to visit the Rodin museum (mainly to see 'The Thinker") with our Museum Pass and found the same sculpture there. I was amazed! Then I looked it up online to find there were six copies of them throughout the world."

The tour was a great overview of Paris. With the strike going on, it was nice to know we had our tour guide Daniela watching and making adjustments as needed. All the guides were great. Our guide for the Musee d'Orsay, James, was especially fantastic. The hotel location was perfect. On our very last day, we were close enough to walk to the Rodin Museum, swing by a bakery to pick up lunch, and walk to the Eiffel Tower to picnic in the sunshine before heading to the airport.

We love Paris and have been there many times, but this was the first time we took a 'tour' there and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great way to spend time with family. Even though it was cold, seeing Paris during the holidays was very special...the street lights, the Christmas markets, hot wine (vin chaud), classic French onion soup, New Years Eve. A great experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moment was New Years Eve at the Eiffel Tower with family. We were able to walk there from the hotel. It's fun to see how others celebrate. Also, just being in Paris for the holidays was a WOW everyday with all of the lights and Christmas markets. It was a great feeling everyday!"

This was my first RS tour so I wasn't sure what to expect. Now I know and can better prepare. Too much like -- if this is Tuesday, it must be Belgium. I think I need more free time to wander. Also, I was unprepared for the high-school type cliques.

I had reservations about this trip because I thought I wasn't a "tour" type person. But now I am! So glad I talked my childhood girlfriend into coming along...we had a blast. What was so surprising was the amount of information I thought I knew, but didn't. The culture, and the architecture was so impressive. I was surprised at how organized and efficient the tour was. Overall experience was perfect. Loved the half days to explore on our own. Very thoughtfully done!

"The Louvre was just so much more than I thought it would be. The guide was so French, so gracious to us, and so knowledgeable about the exhibits. I would never have been able to gain the depth of knowledge without this guide. Entering in the moat was astounding, I had no idea of it's history. What is beautiful is we all took away something extraordinary that we learned. I've heard people say they have been to the Louvre, but I realized I took away the treasure of memories I won't forget"

We were able to not just see the highlights of the city but had the added benefit of expert guides within the art museums and areas we explored. I had never been to Paris, but I have watched Rick Steves programs and used his books for travel elsewhere in Europe, so I think I had a pretty good idea what to expect and, frankly, it met all of my expectations. This was my first group tour and I was very happy with all of the experiences I had. Chris and the local guides made it all very accessible but I learned so much as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Lots of "wow" moments but I was so surprised by my reaction to Monet's "Magpie" and "Turkeys" paintings at D'Orsay. They were positively luminous up close, in person, in a way that can't be replicated in books or other reproductions. I felt thrilled."

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Paris tour experience. We were, at first, hesitant to sign up for a tour. In the past we have traveled on our own, or with family and friends. It was such a great benefit to have our hotel, tourist sites and museums visits arranged for us. I doubt that we would have seen as much had we planned our own trip. And having guided walking tours and museum tour only added to visit. Our guide, Chris, was amazing. She was knowledgeable, helpful, and congenial.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There are of course, many "wow" moments in Paris. One of my favorites is an afternoon we spent traveling around on the Metro, shopping at a flea market in the Marais area. We were able to find our way around on the train (thanks to Chris) and for a period of time felt like we were native Parisians as we walked the streets shopping at the outdoor market and had lunch in a wonderful sidewalk cafe."

Tour was terrific! Our hotel was a small, family owned hotel similar to other Rick Steves hotel choices. Very close to the Eiffel Tower too. Breakfast was good. Our tour guide, Marie, was great! She was accommodating, relaxed, knowledgeable and friendly. We had a good balance of free time and tour time so that worked for us as well. We easily learned the metro system and were able to navigate around Paris on our own time. Marie was able to suggest places we might want to visit.

Enjoyed the full planned tours and our time by ourselves. Did lots of walking which was great. Hotel location is primo near Eiffel. Especially liked walking along the Seine which we did often, The nighttime included boat tour is fantastic with all the lights on the city. The boat is big with probably over 300 people on it so definitely would have preferred a smaller vessel.

It was wonderful. It was exactly what I would expect from Rick Steves. I wanted to learn about the city and public transportation and not be shuttled in a bus to "markets" where the tour director makes a commission. We saw the city from a wonderful neighborhood and Marie was a perfect guide. She talked us through each step and our headsets were great - no shouting. There was, as we expected, lots of walking and steps and cobblestones and it was fun and fascinating.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We walked into our hotel room after taking a bus in from the airport. (We are adults! We can do this!) The full length windows were open and a beautiful sunny day was outside. For our first visit to France we decided on a tour, and this one worked out well. Our guide Marie was wonderful and was effective at dealing with unpredictable situations like protests, memorial services, etc. She adjusted schedules accordingly and we did not miss a beat. Our travel companions were flexible, and it was true that there were hardly any complainers, and folks went with the flow. The Hotel Duquesne Eiffel was a great location, although for the price the rooms were small.

The tour nicely provided access to many, many of the museums Paris has to offer. Free time guidance to see others was helpful. In my opinion the Cluny Museum should be eliminated and perhaps replaced by the Army Museum which was excellent. (Or Rodin Museum) With the Rick Steve's Paris book, the neighborhood walks were great. We paid close attention to advice for restaurants, walks, safety and overall tips. THe river cruise was lovely.

Our tour experience was simply outstanding. It was well structured with a good amount of time spent with the group, but allowing for personal time too. Small modifications were made to the itinerary, where necessary, and were explained to us the first day of the tour. The daily itinerary was posted in the hotel lobby the evening prior. Expectations were made clear to everyone. Getting around on the Metro, bus, or RER train was easy. We walked a great deal and were successful in that regard.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I could say that learning more about Marie Antoinette during the Versailles tour, or seeing the inside of Sacre Coeur during the Montmartre walk, or seeing 'Liberty Leading the People' during the Louvre tour were all wow moments - even that time we were targeted by three young pick pockets on the Metro was a wow moment. But, ultimately, my biggest wow moment was our Rick Steves Tour Guide. She made every moment, every experience, of our tour richer, just by being herself."

It is one thing to print a schedule, another to make it work. Our tour guide, Virginie, modified each day's agenda based on weather conditions. She was outstanding - delighting us with local treats from each of the areas being visited. We really had a taste of Paris! The guides for the Marais, the Louvre, and Versailles were excellent. Everything from the hotel room, to our rides on the metro was PERFECT! Each meal was indeed a MOVEABLE FEAST!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our evening at the Louvre was insightful. It was not just about the painter, the sculptor, or the art object - but the historical context in which it was presented. There are hidden images within the pieces that reveal a greater story. Afterwards, we had dinner and wine at the Café Marly (attached to the Louvre). We were seated at a table with an open window view of the lighted large pyramid. As the moon shone on the pyramid below, we realized it was once-in-a-lifetime moment. WOW!"

Paris was on my bucket list forever, but because I didn't speak the language I was intimidated. After the fire at Notre Dame I was afraid that I had waited too long to visit, but that wasn't the case. From the world class museums to the walks through Parisian neighborhoods the tour was the perfect mix of organized touring & time off to visit other attractions on our own. The trip to Versailles was the cherry on top of a week that was just perfect.

Favorite "WOW" moment

I had a wonderful time and an excellent tour guide. Everything flowed nicely and the only thing I would suggest changing is when our tour met museum guides, they all spent too much time explaining just a few art subjects. It seem more like an art history lesson than a tour of a museum. Everyone on my tours was great and many of us exchanged travel and personal information through out our tour. I'm a single traveler so I feel the extra charge for a single room is a bit steep as well.

Paris is Magical. Loved the hotel and all the the staff. Breakfast was great. Communication could have been alot better regarding using the metro. "I didn't expect it to be, but it was actually the Eiffel Tower. First, waiting by the Seine for the boat tour after sunset, the tower was lit in gold, accompanied by a clear sky and a lovely crescent moon. And just as our boat went by it, to commemorate it's 130th anniversary, it lit up with the colors of the French Flag on the base and "130 ans", and a sparkling gold and white 'champagne' light effect on the top half. It was so beautiful! Montemarte was also incredible! So much history!"

This is our sixth tour with Rick Steves, and for me this was the best. That's not to say I didn't thoroughly enjoy the others it's just that Paris cast a spell over me. Our tour guide Rebecca easily showed us around the city, and added a few treats in for good measure ( wine and cheese tasting class, Champagne at the foot of the Eiffel tower on our last night, and giving us an idea of what Parisianne life is like.) Paris shocked my system--buildings several centuries old, and still in use, museums as old as some of their artifacts, and a physical record of events that shaped the history of my own country. The tour provided daily demonstrations of the irony intimated in Shelley's Ozymandias, how that irony expanded--sacred places and objects that had become curios, shards of civilization that are revered without comprehension. And, there were the money changers in front of Sacre Coeur. Loved it all.

This was my 3rd RS tour... and they just get better each time! This was a different experience as it was a "city" tour and we stayed in one place/one hotel for the entire time. My prior tours involved several stops and coach rides from one place to the next. One is not better or worse, it's just different. The positives were not unpacking/repacking to move every couple of days. But, the group dynamic did seem different as you're not together on the coach.

Not my favorite Rick Steves tour so far but I'm not sure why. Maybe the excessive construction going on now for future Olympic Games which was everywhere. Was not interested in seeing the Mona Lisa but the crowds for her prevented us from seeing any Dutch Masters (the lines were so long and we were already pretty worn out). Also some glitches with transportation due to Yellow Vesters, climate change protest and Heritage Day all happening on the Saturday that we were there. Pickpocket worries!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I wouldn't call it a favorite, but maybe most memorable ~ I got my left upper arm caught in a Metro door! I was so surprised, I didn't have time to panic or react in any way, really. A nice young man on the train (and possibly Antoine, our guide for the whole tour) pried the doors open before the train started and all was well.. I got some significant bruising, but was otherwise fine. More embarrassing than anything else but it reminded me to stay clear of the doors for the rest of the trip!!"

I thought the tour was well organized and well. It was a pretty big group (24 or so) and that, of course, presents challenges. Overall tour was fine but too much waiting. Also 3 dinners too many, very long and slow service. 2 dinners, 1st and last night plenty. Day with our tour with Louvre much too much. "The Orsay Museum tour was overwhelming, and the guide was excellent. The setting of the old railway station was a work of art in itself. The discussion of the evolution from pre-Impressionist to post was very good. The tour was great, the history is amazing, going to the museum's and churches was so interesting. One thing I would like to see is maybe a break from the history and maybe in the middle of the tour we go somewhere such as a car manufacturer if there is one close to Paris or maybe a glass blower. These are just ideas I have no idea if these things are in the area. Seven days of history is a lot of history and a day of something different would be a nice break.

Every Rick Steves Tour I've taken, the week in Paris Tour being the fifth, has been wonderful. This was no exception. Our hotel was charming and very well located near the Tour Eiffel, our guide, Michaelanne, was superb...knowledgeable, warm, caring and fun. My overall experience was very good. Thank you for providing whisperers from day one. I think the tour provided a very good mix of activities from the cruise on the Seine, to museum tours, and walking tours to Montmarte. One thing I thought was odd -- our guide kept telling us the goal of the tour was to learn to use the Metro and travel independently throughout Paris. My goal in visiting Paris was to learn about and enjoy the city. Why would I take a tour to learn how to ride a subway?!?

This was an extremely well organized tour. Clearly, there was a lot of thought and planning put into everything from the hotel, it's location, the museums and all the many logistics necessary to moving a crowd smoothly through a city environment. "Difficult to pick one but entering the magnificent space in the Louvre underneath the pyramid with all the light pouring in was truly breathtaking. When that was first installed in the 80's I thought it was an eyesore and some nitwit architect just plopped down a modern structure in the most inappropriate spot possible. Good tour packing a lot in during the 5.5 days. '7th day doesn't count as it is only the hotel breakfast & off to airports or train stations on our own, but not part of the RS tour. Paris is large and can be overwhelming to explore. Marie was wonderful at breaking it down into small and sequential bites, providing history and current events, humor, understanding and enlightenment of this beautiful city.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My wow moment was simply that I could navigate the city entirely on my own once Marie explained the community transit in Paris. The subway and train system is designed to quickly get you anywhere you want to go without ever getting behind the wheel yourself."

Best of Paris in 7 Days is another home run by the Rick Steve's team. Don't second guess your decision to press 'GO' on this personalized first class trip. You could spend a year researching and planning, but still come up short in trying to match this package. It's affordable and proven with a small group feel, which is a comfort if you are not accustomed to navigating cities that are foreign to you. The guides are brilliant, the accommodations well appointed and the dinners delectable.

I and my fifteen-year-old son loved everything about this tour! Julie was an incredible guide. She was smart, friendly, full of information and seemed to enjoy herself as much as the rest of us did. She didn't just show us around, she taught us how to get along on our own. She also led an excellent wine and cheese tasting! My son and I learned so much each day. We LOVED the hotel! The group was small enough that we were able to get to make friends pretty quickly. We loved the "whisper system".

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our cruise on the Seine on our final night was magical. As we passed beneath the first bridge, Julie uncorked a bottle of champagne and served it to all of us. It was a beautiful evening and I think everyone was feeling overwhelmed with the beauty of Paris, the wonderful friends we'd made, and the sadness of our last night together on this life-changing week."

This was a fabulous tour. I was traveling by myself and made many friends in the group. I also loved that our guide helped us learn how to use the buses and metro, so we could get around the city on our own. Lovely hotel, too!

It was another awesome Rick Steves tour for me. I have visited Paris several times on my own and love the City. That said, I always find value in seeing a familiar 'friend' with a guide and through someone else's eyes. In this particular case, it was through Marie's and my granddaughters' eyes. I appreciate and value the fact that your guides (for the most part) are men and women who actually are 'natives' of the countries and/or cities we visit. What an extraordinary experience overall!

Our week in Paris was fabulous! Julie, the tour guide, was wonderful! She explained everything thoroughly, was very helpful and a lot of fun to spend time with. All of our local guides were also very informative and interesting. The hotel was in a great location, the staff were all very nice and the rooms and breakfasts were excellent! We will definitely travel with Rick Steves again!

My daughter and I decided to get our of our vacation comfort zone and go to Europe. Our goal was to have a rich learning experience. Goal met!! This was our very first guided tour and am so completely happy we chose Rick Steves' Tours. It delivered exactly what it promised: an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Paris in a small group. Our view of the world has expanded and we will return (with guide book in hand) by ourselves in the future and also plan our next RS tour!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I joked that "I can get lost in the bathtub" so I was quite anxious to a) travel to Europe in the first place and b) navigate back to the hotel on the Metro by myself. Julie spent time to teach us exactly how to read the Metro map, use the guidebook, and be confident. One afternoon when we had free time, Hannah and I managed to get to/from several places ON OUR OWN. That was the Wow! moment. I can do this (explore new places!!)"

This was my first Rick Steves' tour. I was impressed with the quality and quantity of activities. The guides were knowledgeable and took time to explain what we were seeing and answer our questions. The food and accommodations were impressive and more than met my expectations!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was on the Paris City Tour. We had just finished the evening river boat cruise on the Seine. It was starting to get dark and the Eiffel Tower was already lit. Our guide, Marie, knew we might just make it to the base of the tower in time to see the twinkling lights at 10:00 pm. She quickly guided us through some back streets where we landed at the base of the tower just in time to see the twinkling lights go on. It was a magical moment enjoyed by all!"

Julie was a FABULOUS guide! Also, I lived the sequence of our day trips: I lived the history of each place we visited and how it all seemed to culminate with our last day at the 2 big museums. I felt like I was able to visit so many of the places where the artists painted throughout the week and then on the last day I could really connect to the art because I visited the places where the art was made/places where the artists were inspired.

"Last day at the Orsay and l'Orange museums because that's where the while trip seemed to come together for me."

The tour was lovely as Paris is a wonderful place to be. Being on the tour, I actually felt a bit silly because we didn't do anything I couldn't have easily organized myself. I have been on other Rick Steve's tours, and we did more things off the beaten track or with locals. It would have been nice to have more of a discussion of current events. The protests were happening while we were there, but we didn't get a social/political context for the unrest. Would have been interesting.

Perfectly planned and designed to get the best out of each day. We left our hotel each morning ready to see what the day offered, and returned each day exhausted but happy!! We were thrilled with Paris: the food (fantastic), history, art and the people. We could easily take this tour again and enjoy it just as much.

"Everyday was a new "wow" moment . . standing in front of the Mona Lisa, taking a riverboat ride under the night sky with the Eiffel tower lit up in all it's splendor. Walking by Notre Dame (after the fire)with a feeling of gratitude that it was still there."

This is my first tour of any kind. I was wary that there wouldn't be enough time to do the things I wanted to do. I thought the structure of mornings guided and afternoons free worked great. It was especially helpful that Michaelanne gave us ideas and transportation ideas before leaving us off in the morning. Getting the full skinny on how to navigate the Paris public transportation system empowered us to venture off on our own. Fantastic!

"No fair. How can one choose one experience when it's PARIS!?!?!? So I'm giving you two: 1)Coming to the top of the stairs at Sainte Chapelle on a sunny day with the stained glass all around. It would make a true believer out of the darkest skeptic. 2) Standing in front of the Renoir Danse à la campagne that I have loved my whole life - but for that matter - the entire D'orsay had me seriously considering a move to Paris."

When To Go & Weather

Paris is a vibrant city to visit nearly year-round. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Visiting between November and March, the weather is colder and wetter, but the city still feels lively and has the benefit of being less touristy.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour hotel is included in your tour confirmation email as well as the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your tour hotel in the Documents section of your tour account.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Paris' Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) airports.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Paris guidebook.
