Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Sleep in Paris (6 nights). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including visits to a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. Depending on the season, we'll end our afternoon at the Panthéon (spring/summer), the Neoclassical monument to France’s history and people, or the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages (fall/winter), home to the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre and a Seine Cruise

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood that was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter, and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face to face with the works of Raphael, Delacroix, and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hour. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum, featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin, and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing, for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.

There was a good mix of activities and downtime. I liked the hotel and location and having the Navigo pass and the the Museum Pass so we could get around to everything we wanted. The 'extras' were great too: the bus tour and the wine tasting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Orangerie. Even though we had visited this 3 years ago, the local guide really brought it to life. The art alone is amazing, of course, but she made it extra enjoyable. (I really expected Versailles to be the 'wow' moment since we hadn't been there.) I wished she had also guided us through the Orsay."

The overall experience was very good. We met some great people and had very knowledgeable tour guides. Weather was nice so it made the whole experience better. We saw things and learned about things that we would never have been able to do on our own. The room was nice but a bit small. It was however located in the heart of everything and close to buses, the metro and shops. The staff was very helpful. It was nice to gather with our group in the morning before heading out to see the sites.

This was a fabulous tour of Paris and a great introduction to the culture and history of France. Marie, our guide was great. Very informative, and able to keep track of all 24 of us! Great group of travellers. Literally loved every moment in Paris.

This was our first "City Tour" via Rick Steves after several our tours through Rick Steves. Our Best of Paris Tour exceeded our expectations in literally all ways. We've heard Rick tall about Paris many times and make the comment Paris is a city you can continue to visit and enjoy...we now know why. We had a wonderful hotel in a great location near the Eiffel Tower and near transportation . The hotel staff was terrific only exceeded by our guide Rebecca. Perfect experience!

"Paris is a series of special "wow"moments...from the venues to the food to the people of the City. We came early and went to and up the Eiffel Tower ...that experience set the tone for the week to follow...a true "wow" moment and life time dream. We finished our Tour the last night watching the Eiffel Tower at night...twinkling! Paris and our RS 7 day tour...wow!"

Rick Steves' tour #2 is now over and I can't think of anything we didn't see in Paris that we should have. Great sights, great food and enough personal time to do some things friends had suggested. The timing for museums was perfect meaning there were just a few heads in my Mona Lisa photos. The second week was spent with another tour group which I will contrast below. I hope I have created a market for you in Canada and Australia.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Paris was filled with museums filled with art. My favorite part of the trip was not the sites but the history behind the buildings and art which Rebecca and our guides explained very well. If I were to pick one sight it would be Versailles with its gold trim. I now understand why there was a revolution."

Paris is a lovely city. There were lots of great neighborhoods and lots of free time to explore not just the museums, but also the restaurants, cafes and shopping. Tour guide Julie, was very informative and approachable. The Metro was easy to get around thanks to Julie teaching and showing us everyday as we went out, where we were, surrounding activities, as well as as way back to the Hotel. Bus 69 was also great and only a block from the hotel. I rode it all the way to the 20th Arrondissement

I enjoyed visiting the sites and neighborhoods of Paris but always felt rushed. I wanted to look around more. Couldn't understand why we couldn't leave 10 earlier to do it. I generally like listening to info about the history of things but too many of our guides went on way too much for my liking. I loved the artwork, museums, monuments, going to Versailles and exploring around Paris in the afternoons in spite of the smoke filled cafes. The dinners together were great.

This tour answered all our needs and next time we visit, Paris will be more familiar and more enlightening on our own. OUr guide was excellent and very helpful about many issues and the local guides were also wonderful choices by RS. This was my 7th and her 3rd RS and each one has been superior/superlative.

The Palace itself with it's beautiful ornaments, paintings, and luxurious rooms really made me feel awestruck. I had traveled to France 4 times before this tour. Each time focusing on different aspects of France/Paris. Though I had already been to Louvre, Versailles, Invalides, Eiffel, Arc, Moulin Rouge - this tour really gave me the in depth history & details that were glossed over on previous travels. In a nut shell... this was a really wonderful trip. I know more about the history, art & culture of France than I did on the other visits I made. Overall, well done.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Since I had already been to Notre Dame, Mona Lisa, Champs d'Elysses, cruise on Seine my WOW moment was more subdued - probably Monet Lillies at Orangerie Museum - I'd never seen. Also, visited d'Orsay, Picasso & Hugo privately [not part of the tour]. My biggest WOW was dinner at 58 Restaurant at Eiffel... also, not part of the tour - but a big WOW."

Our Best of Paris in 7 Days Tour with Virginie from 8/19/18- 8/25/18 was a good experience and pleasant time to Paris. Verginie our guide is very professional, energetic, positive and warm personality. She is able to keep in touch with everybody and at the same time follow the general line of the trip. We could see and explore a huge amount of new places: cathedrals, places of interest, trip on the rive Seine, walking excursions, museums. Our hotel was nice, food was tasty, we were happy!

This was the first Rick Steve's tour that my husband and I have taken. What a wonderful experience! The selected hotel in Paris was in District 7 which is centrally located and near the metro. Loved our stay at Hotel Londres Eiffel. The breakfast was amazing and the accommodations so comfortable. We arrived 4 days early so that we could tour Normandy, WWI sites, and Giverney on our own. The sites that were included in the tour were outstanding. Antoine Bonfils is tour guide extraordinaire!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many WOW moments. The expert tour guides at all visited sites (Versailles, Louvre) and Antoine Bonfils gave us the opportunity to KNOW and understand Paris. Not only the history and historical sites but the culture and the people. We loved the walking tour of the Montmartre district (Brad the tour guide was great) and Sainte Chapelle has to be my favorite cathedral. We came up the steps at the second floor of the chapel and I gasped. So much beauty."

Overall, tour was good. The accommodations were nice; quaint, polished, friendly and centralized come to mind. The tour portion of the tour that I would recommend altering is the 2 hour "get to know you" session. I felt this was overtly redundant as Rick Steves does a fabulous job of sending put the itinerary, tour expectations and a list of travelers on tour. I felt 2 hours was 1.5 hours too long to have a "sit and get" after long flights. The tour pace overall felt slow.

Seeing Paris in four and one half days is not easy, but this tour hit 90% of the "must see" places in this lovely, old city and some. Organized tour time was well balanced with "free" time, this balance was made easy by brilliant, professional, perfect guide, Virginie. Much appreciated were the free museum entrance card and the prepaid transportation card. Thanks for this unexpected treat. Needed five more days to get the complete Paris experience!

This was a fabulous tour. It covered many of the main sights in Paris in only seven days. I do not think you could have seen everything we did if you didn't have it all arranged for you. The price was reasonable too. As I do not speak French it was also very helpful to have such a good guide. The location of our hotel was great and very close to the Eiffel Tower. It was a small boutique hotel with very good service. The breakfast was good too.

"That would have to be a tie between the Seine river cruise and the Monet Museum. I have never seen so many Monet's in my life. We did a pre tour check- in, which I would highly recommend. We had 3 days to help with the jet lag and went to Giverny, Monet's home.. This is a must see and only one hour from Paris. Id recommend a tour for this. Our tour guide, Arnaud, was amazing. He was the prefect guide for a tour of Paris. It was great that we were taught the Metro system, and how to get around Paris. I love the schedule of the tour were we spend the morning as a group, and are on our own in the afternoons. It's the perfect combo of time with the group, and time on our own. The Rick Steve's guidebook had awesome recommendations for food around our hotel, and in the different areas of the city.

Our guide was fantastic. On three separate locations, she had experts in the area or particular museum, lead our group with unbelievable knowledge and depth of the subject, as well as as charming a personality as you will find anywhere. It made for such a pleasant day and such a feeling of really getting to know the subject.

"Our first night was also the night of the World Cup Soccer Match. We were to meet after the match, as a group, for dinner at a near by restaurant. The excitement of the win by France was to much for the local fans and our restaurant suffered a bit of damage. So much so that they felt they were unable to properly serve our group, and closed down. With some discussion from our guide, they agreed to sneak us into the buiding, and proceeded to serve us the most wonderful Duck dinner we ever had."

This was a trip of a lifetime for me to visit Paris, my first European vacation. It was so important to have a pleasant trip both in terms of sightseeing and in logistics. Rick Steves Tours did a top-notch job in both areas. The arrangements that were made for us as a tour group helped save so much time, increasing the amount of time we could spend enjoying Paris. And the tour schedule was just right: we saw the top sights and had free time, too.

"It had to be seeing my favorite painting in the world: Renoir's Two Girls at the Piano. There were six versions painted by Renoir and we saw one at the Musee d'Orsay and the other at Musee de l'Orangerie. I had seen another version here in the U.S. I was so touched that I wanted to cry. Renoir's art was one of the inspirations through the years that led to my interest in visiting France."

I joined the tour at the beginning of my second week in Paris. Each day was a memorable day and everywhere we visited was a cultural gem and a "memorable gem" for me. I have regrets that I could not be with my group for the first two days but I was with my class of 63' American School of Paris in Louveciennes at Pavillon du Berry! Then, the glittering blanket of diamond lights that sparkled on the Eiffel Tower."

I enjoyed the tour and the Eiffel Tower neighborhood, but this was not the best Rick Steves tour. This was my fourth tour with the company, and while the other three would all be tied for Number One, this one was definitely fourth. The pacing of the activities just seemed off. While it is definitely desirable to have time on our own, I would have liked more group interaction, shared meals, time during a walking tour to share a coffee, or explore an area while there instead doubling back later.

For our first RS tour, we were not disappointed. We felt we got to see some places in depth.....yet not so deep we couldn't go back time and again. And we were given freedom to pursue our own interests (such as checking out San Sulpice for the meridian line on its floor). The comfort level to travel without our guide was extremely helpful......it lets you discover delights in corners you never expected to visit. We realized we could come again and again and enjoy even more.

The closet in my room at the Hotel Londres Eiffel was so small and inconveniently tucked in a corner so that it was almost unuseable. Coffee pots in the rooms would have been greatly appreciated instead of having to run down to the breakfast room each morning to get coffee or tea. What a fantastic experience! This was our first Rick Steve tour and was not sure what to expect and we were not disappointed. We were amazed at how much we got to see in the city of Paris. We loved touring the different neighborhoods keeping all this information with us so we could see it again in the future. We learned so much too--how to ride the Metro, wine tasting, cheese tasting ... we felt we really got the Parisian experience.

We enjoyed a tour that stayed in same hotel for the duration. We appreciated the freedom and flexibility provided by having the Metro and Museum passes, which we used every day. Everything went smoothly from start to finish. I LOVED the hotel. My room was beautiful and very comfortable. The location of the hotel could not have been better, with the Champs du Mars and Eiffel Tower within walking distance. I appreciated how I could walk to everything. I used Le Bus to get from the airport and then had a 15 minute walk to the hotel. Very convenient. The tour guide, Arnaud, was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Our guide was great, he was very knowledgeable and punctual and had many small stories to personalize the experience. We had quite a few seniors on our trip who required repeated instructions, extra time, and a slower pace who may have felt hurried or tired. However, for a young adult I felt I was able to see and understand the most important areas of Paris with plenty of time left for exploring on my own. We had some great dinner conversations.

A bit overwhelming, but not in a bad way. There was - on paper - a balance between planned activities and time on our own. However, there was so much to see and process that I needed a bit more "downtime," which was certainly encouraged by our guide and utilized by other group members. I'm not complaining about the active schedule: It was wonderful to have such a wealth of opportunities to experience Paris. The hotel was comfortable and charming and the other tour members good company.

My wife and I usually travel on our own and set up every hotel, ground transportation and site that we want to see. This was our first tour group and we didn't know if we would like the pace or the other people on the tour. We were delightfully surprised at how much we enjoyed this tour! The tour was everything I expected it to be, except I'm not as young as I was in 2001, when I took a Rick Steves tour of northern Italy with tour guide Jamie and 18 tourists. This time I needed down time in the afternoon and mostly got it. We often were on our feet for 6 hours or more a day and I wore out a pair of new walking shoes. I especially liked the buddy system that worked every time. Marie didn't lose anyone. She is a great guide and made my overall experience very good.

This tour not only included the "must do" highlights, but educated you in getting around Paris in a way that encouraged exploring on your own. Enough open time was left in the schedule, but not too much, so that if you had a particular interest, you could go off on your own and see what you wanted to see. The selection of sites and museums worked very well around the rain and what was closed. My "overall experience" was out of RS tours control. I spent 3 days "touring" the American Hospital before the RS tour. Got pickpocketed Thursday morning on the subway but - now I have even more exciting stories to tell !

"The secondary guide for the Orangerie showed us and described the development of style of the impressionist paintings so that the progression made sense for the first time. The visit to Saint Chapelle, luckily, coincided with a very sunny day so it was magnificent - my wife's favorite, along with her visit Toni facilitated to the Picasso museum during free time one afternoon when the end of our guided walk left us in the neighborhood."

The tour was great and Rolinka was superb! We arrived late so she met us early the first day of the tour to catch us up with the group. It was exactly what I wanted...to see iconic Paris. Especially helpful was Rolinka's explanation of the subway system and how to navigate it. It was also very nice having time to do our own things, as well as having some meals alone.

This is my second Rick Steve's tour and it was as outstanding as the first. The Hotel was comfortable with an excellent location and very accommodating staff. I enjoyed the local restaurants and the ability to walk to most of the major attractions. The tour did a nice job of covering the major sites and museums of Paris within the allotted time frame. It was comforting to learn how to navigate Paris on our own. The use of headphones to communicate was a very nice touch.

We chose Rick Steves Paris tour for the ease and convenience of planning. We wanted to have a unique hotel, pre-purchased tickets and tour guides so this was the ideal choice. The tour far surpassed our expectations, and we came away with memories for a lifetime. Our guide Rolinka was incredibly knowledgeable, as well as warm and caring. When asked about the tour I state that we didn't "visit" Paris, but we had an education on how to "stay" in Paris. It gave us travel confidence.

Apart from the cold weather, the trip was amazing. We'd been to Paris twice before but had never really 'seen' Paris ... this trip enabled us to see and understand a lot of Paris we could never cover by ourselves. What made it even better was having a guide like Rolinka, and the local guides she introduced us to.

"My favourite 'wow' moment was walking into Saint Chapelle ... it stopped me dead in my tracks and I had to stop and take a deep breath. It was incredible, I've never seen anything so beautiful. The tour is ideal for someone who is looking for a "Paris immersion" -- the program really helps you learn how to navigate the excellent Parisian subway and bus system -- very clean, efficient and safe! The tour takes the stress out of visiting a new European city, and includes all the tools one needs for a great experience: including the subway/bus pass, Museum pass, and local knowledge! The itinerary provides a great balance of organized activities and ample time to explore on your own.

Overall I would give our experience a thumbs up and would recommend it to others. Staffing of the experience, from hotel to guide were by well versed, professional and patient people. I could tell they all had a sense of humor about what they do as often it is necessary when dealing with the expectations of American tourists. I have been to Paris before, long ago, however enjoyed the suggestions and directions of going to the iconic areas and sites of Paris.

"I wouldnt't characterize my wow as favorable. I was surprised how crowded Paris was even during the off season. There was some hope that crowds would be avoided, but the biggest one came at Versailles, when the surge of tour groups, pushing and shoving to get inside became quite aggressive. It did not make me want to go back. There must be a better way of controlling crowds at this site, however realize it is not in the hands of your company at that level."

Patrick can include the knowledge of a lifetime into one week in Paris, but he makes it entertaining and fun. You never realized you could walk and learn so much in this short period. It was well-paced and in a terrific neighborhood. The hotel was, indeed, cozy, but who sits around in hotel rooms when you are in Paris? Not me! Nice staff too. I think I appreciated most our guide's (Patrick's) careful schooling of us in how to ride a subway. The main theme for me on this trip was STRESS FREE. I loved our tour guide, Marie. My husband and i called her "momma Marie" and she gave us a level of comfort and security throughout the trip. The events scheduled were just enough to make us feel we didn't waste our time, but not too much to exhaust us into oblivion. I loved being in a small group, traveling together on Public Transportation (NOT crammed into a packed tour bus)and staying in a small centrally located hotel. It was a great trip and I would love to go back to Paris again. A bonus was the 6 lbs. I lost doing all that walking!

As this was our first trip to France, the 7 day tour of Paris was an outstanding introduction into French culture. From the museums to the night cruise on the Seine to the food and wine, our experience in Paris was magical. Our tour guide, Rebecca Berry, provided us with a plethora of historical facts and interesting stories. This introduction in Paris equipped us an excellent platform for the remaining 2 weeks we spent throughout France.

"If I had to choose one "wow" moment I would say it was the night cruise on the Seine. The Eiffel Tower lite up the night every hour beginning at 9:00 PM and to see it "up close and personal" while on the river was unbelievable!!"

I loved my Best of Paris in 7 Days Tour. It was such a great introduction to this complex, lively, historically and culturally rich city. I would have never been able to cover so many key places, get such great history and information and have so much fun on my own. We learned how to use the Metro our first day and with our Metro pass and museum pass were able to make the city our own. The tour was a perfect mix of structured events and free time to explore. Paris: Allons-y!!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the city bus tour on our first night. Seeing sites like the Eiffel Tower, the Arch de Triumph and the Champs de Elysee - sites that I've only seen in photos, movies my entire life. To actually see them in person took my breath away! I couldn't wait to get out on foot the next day and explore."

Our tour offered a comprehensive look at Paris, involving history, art, architecture, neighborhoods and culture. The places we toured were interesting and well organized. Local guides added to our overarching experiences and impressions. I liked that each day offered time to ourselves for our own explorations or rest. I also thought Julie was excellent, and adjusted some of our activities to our groups' relative ages, stamina and interests.

Everything about this tour was wonderful. Our knowledgeable tour guide, Julie, was delightful. She was informed, personable, and added to the group cohesiveness. I was hesitant about going on a tour but it turned out to be a wonderful experience. I really appreciated having the planned highlights of the City, and then time to explore on my own. It was a perfect balance. Fabulous guided walking tours of interesting neighborhoods and an extraordinary guide thru the Orangerie.

I have been on two RS tours to Italy...this one was different in that it was shorter, more intense in terms of museums to visit, and relied on the metro every day to get places. Sort of like going to work every day. Tour was good, but most places were too crowded which detracted from overall experience. Paris is also a different place...much bigger than I'm used to. Museums were great.

I enjoyed this tour very much. The hotel (excellent location and the staff was so helpful) was great and I like the city tours because not having to change hotels is a big plus. I liked our group (no grumps :-) and our tour guide was excellent. The walks with the local guides were informative and fun, we liked the food and the wine tasting was "the best". Paris is now one of my favorite (if not the most favorite) European cities, thanks to this tour.

Often when we plan a "dream" vacation reality and expectations don't match but Paris not only met those expectations, she exceeded them! What an amazing city. The local experts that we met were extremely knowledgeable and really provided that extra insight that helped to enhance to experience.

I loved the format of the tour[INVALID] activities with the tour group in the morning and free time for the rest of the day. We came a day early and had a difficult time at a restaurant. At tour orientation the next day, we learned we had made all the mistakes of someone who isn't from France. Once we understood the culture, it was no problem. I feel like I should have earned college credit! The tour guides were full of detailed information about art and history.

Our Paris trip was everything we hoped for. The hotel was comfortable, the weather was good (a bit of rain, but no worries there). We have been "self-travelers" for 13 years in Europe, but were happy to turn the logistics of Paris over to someone else! The tour experience was excellent. I did this tour right after completing your 7 day London tour and our guide Jeanie was so fantastic she set the bar really high.
