Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2-4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2-6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2-8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll gather at our hotel in Paris at 3 p.m. for a short meeting and orientation stroll around our neighborhood, followed by a panoramic tour of the City of Light aboard a private bus. Then we'll get acquainted with one another over a delicious "Welcome to Paris" dinner together. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 2: The Historic Heart of Paris

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including visits to a pair of the world's most significant medieval Gothic churches: the legendary Notre-Dame Cathedral and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle. Then we'll take a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter, with free time for lunch on your own. We'll end our afternoon at the Cluny National Museum of the Middle Ages, where after an introduction, you’ll be free to visit the sublime Lady and the Unicorn tapestry and have a rare, up-close look at the artistry of original stained-glass windows from Sainte-Chapelle. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Montmartre

This morning we'll hop on the Métro, then hike up Montmartre to tour the colorful neighborhood which was the haunt of artistic geniuses a century ago — including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Renoir — and generations of hopeful artists since. We'll end our walk with spectacular views of Paris from the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. You'll be free for lunch and have time to explore more of the city on your own this afternoon. We'll regroup this evening to enjoy a wine tasting and dinner together before embarking on a dreamy Seine River cruise. Boat: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 4: The Marais District and the Louvre

We'll begin our day with a walking tour through Paris' diverse, history-layered Marais district. As we walk we'll learn about enlightened 17th-century urban planning at the beautiful Place des Vosges, the cultural roots of the Jewish Quarter and how the French Revolution grew from this neighborhood. Our walk will end at the Carnavalet Museum, a cavalcade of Parisian history, which you can visit on your own. This evening, Europe's greatest museum — the Louvre — is open late, and we'll take full advantage of that. You'll come face-to-face with the works of Rafael, Delacroix and Leonardo, and timeless treasures that include Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo and hundreds more. Walking: strenuous.

Day 5: All Day at Château de Versailles

Today we'll explore the elaborate palace that Louis XIV, XV, and XVI called home. We'll make the 30-minute train trip to Versailles, where we'll have a guided tour of the dazzling Hall of Mirrors and other sumptuous rooms of the palace. You'll then have free time to wander through the expansive gardens and visit the farm animals at Marie Antoinette's hamlet — or zip back to Paris early via one of the frequent trains. Train: 1 hr. Walking: strenuous.

Day 6: Masterpieces of Paris

This morning we'll tour the Orangerie Museum featuring Monet's magnificent water lilies and home to a fine collection of other works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and more. You'll be well oriented and have time this afternoon to see the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — almost next door — at the Orsay Museum, with art from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and beyond. Or visit other nearby places covered by your included 6-Day Paris Museum Pass, such as the Rodin Museum, or the military museum of Les Invalides. Tonight we'll enjoy a farewell feast together, sharing travel memories and toasting new friends. Salut! Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today.  It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

The tour was a great blend of group activities of the highlights, and with the metro and museum pass there were endless activities to enjoy during free time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Musee d'Orangerie was moving in a way I wasn't prepared for, and that is in large part due to the guide we had for the museum. The water lilies were very nice, but the way the guide highlighted the entrance and setting and placement of everything just blew me away."

Even after watching the Rick Steves program on TV for years, I was still very skeptical about a group travel experience. I didn't want to be herded around or following someone holding an umbrella. The experience in Paris was beyond my expectations in so many ways. I loved having the information from our incredible guides but also the great freedom to explore and have my own travel experiences with or without the group. As a single traveler, this was a bonus.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The guides were truly above and beyond. I really liked having the smaller transmitters to wear. Hidden under a coat or sweater it looked like you were listening to music. I hate standing out like a tourist. These allowed us to roam and explore while listening to the guide. As a short person, this was especially appreciated. I can rarely see what someone is talking about while standing in a large group. These made a huge difference."

We had a great time in Paris. The people where so kind and appreciated us still coming after the horrible event. We felt very safe and proud to support the French. This was our second time in Paris and still we did not get to see all we wanted, so we'll be back again:)

I was worried staying in Paris the first couple days, but I felt safe and enjoyed the tour. Tourists were a lot less, and we visited Orsay museum, Eiffel Tour, and Versailles without waiting for hours. We couldn't visit them in the last time for a long line. I am glad to joined Rick Steve Tour that tour guide helped us where to visit and to eat when we had a free time each day. You don't want to waste your time to find what to do and where to go there.

"My surprise event was attending a concert with my husband at Sainte-Chapelle and enjoyed Vivaldi's music, Four seasons. While we were waiting on the line for the concert, an French man talked to us asking how the trip to Paris. I never talked to French or never imagined friendly French. However, I met two other ladies who helped me to find our hotel and a restaurant when we were lost. One lady did not speak English at all, and I don't speak French either. But,she took us to there."

Rick Steve's Paris tour is an excellent. My husband and I did this tour over 10 yrs ago and returned with two of our children. Wonderful to stay again in the same hotel, Londres Eiffel. The staff is professional and personable, especially Arno who welcomed us and did an orientation. A quaint, and very clean hotel. Our guide was the perfect person for the job. Her knowledge and personality allowed us all to relax, enjoy the tour especially following the horrific terrorist events a week prior

"Discovering how warm and proud Parisians are was the greatest surprise. As explained by our guide, they are a formal culture, which could potentially be misunderstood. With this in mind, we felt embraced by the citizens of Paris."

There was plenty to see, yet we had some free time as well. The hotel and its location were perfect. We got a local taste of Paris not being in some "chain" hotel or on a busy avenue. Rue Cler area was charming!

"Too many to name, however, the tour of the Orangerie and the Monet paintings, while a small part of the tour, were the highlight. Others include the fact that we were set free to explor the city as natives (Metro, bus pass, etc.) which gave me the confidence to experience Paris 'on the ground' and not on a tour bus."

I had a wonderful experience on the tour in Paris. The Rick Steve's organization, planning and execution was smooth and efficient. I was somewhat worried about all the walking, but it turned out to be okay and had enough pauses and stops to make it invigorating and pleasant. Seven days in Paris was nowhere near enough time. We had a wonderful introduction to the politics and culture from our guide, Virginie. She also walked us through the convenient Paris Metro. This was up to the usual high Rick Steves standards. Lots of walking, very good local guides, excellent Rick Steves guide (Rebecca) and some free time built in. This was our forth tour and highly recommended. The "no tipping" policy was again appreciated and was in contrast to the river cruise we took the following week where the cruise company gave recommended tip amounts. This, I guess, is to subsidize the pay they provide their employees. We prefer the Rick Steves system.

First time off North America. It was great. Don´t want to imagine how less rich it would have been without the immersion in the neighborhood and the self confidence gained from learning how to use the native services that is a hallmark of the Rick Steves philosophy. Guide(s) and the hotel were great. I kept tallying up things in my head on how this or that worked out fine. Of course [INVALID] clearly because of the thought that is put into planning every tour!

"How do I pick the _best_ tour, museum, or dinner? So I´ll say the many moments when my ¨Me want them there, two!¨ level of sorta French were met with surprising grace. Perhaps that little bit coupled with our guide´s frequent tips were enough to melt hearts but I did not find the Parisians living up to their reputation as cold and difficult."

We loved it! Excellent balance between outstanding guided visits to top sites, and free time, with available assistance. Of course, the special nature of Paris had something to do with it also. Tour was both well-conceived and well executed.

"A lot of candidates, but I thought our guided tour of Orangerie was the best. After being "museumed too death" for four days (no fault of the tour, just the nature of what Paris offers), the small Orangerie was delightful and so well highlighted by our guide. Elizabeth was the best guide of all--a great offering of well-considered insights, without too much information."

Overall, it was a great tour, with many memorable moments. We like the philosophy of teaching us to be independent travelers although it sometimes took longer to do things that way. I do think we were a bit rushed, even though we spent 7 days in one place! Maybe it's because there's so much to see in Paris, that we didn't take enough time to relax and just enjoy it.

Excellent tour and great pace. We have come home raving about trip. Have travelled with a # of tour companies and this is the trip where I felt like I was not a tourist, but a local. Loved our morning walks in the different neighborhoods with such excellent guides. Most of all, I appreciated Rebecca. I learned so much about the country and Paris. The French people were kind and very helpful and beautiful. All the Museum are gorgeous. Love Montmartre and Sacre' Coeur Basilica.. Wonderful experience- The daily itinerary was varied, interesting and well presented- No wasted time -very professional yet a lot of fun- Our guide Rebecca Berry was a great teacher- and simply a nice and fun person- could not have had a better leader- I also loved the value and convenience of the navigo and museum pass- and was pleased we used public transportation and had time for independent exploration

What a fantastic experience! Our tour guide was pure class -- boundless in energy; encyclopedic in knowledge; kind; warm and always cheerful. I was a little hesitant at first to go with a group of people I didn't know. My mother-in-law had recommended it in the first place. Being my first time in Europe though, I decided maybe it would be good to have some help. I have to say, I am so very glad I did go on the Rick Steve's Tour. All in all the tour was great but I found the intensity level more demanding than I expected. I think the Metro was more difficult than anticipated because of all the stairs involved. Virginie had to adjust our schedule because of potential strikes at a number of places so a few days got more packed than others. I carefully read the level of activity for each day and thought the only day I would have had the most difficulty was the walk up to Sacre Cour, so I opted out and rested.

This was my third time in Paris. The first time we went with friends independently. The second time I was a tour leader for AAA on a World War II tour. Each trip was a little different and this one turned out to be no less exciting than our previous trips. Virginie was excellent and we had a chance to see a couple of things we did not on other trips, such as the Orangerie. Paris is indeed " a movable feast" and once again this magnificent city was magical.

"I really enjoyed our day in Montmarte, and especially the food at the market set up by Sacre- Coeur. The day was sunny and warm enough to eat outside on the steps. We had champagne, oysters on the half shell, and shared sandwiches-ham and cheese and salami and cheese. Seeing the Eiffel tower's flashing lights at night was spectacular, especially on the last evening when Virginie took us there for champagne after our last dinner together. It is hard not to love a Paris tour. Several days were very strenuous caused by shifting sight days because of strikes. Most days we were logging over 20,000 steps per day so you might want to up the difficulty indications for this tour. I had upped my exercise regimen to six days a week in preparation but there were some days that I was totally wiped out.

Rick Steves' group travel is an educational experience. We saw as many sites as we could absorb and were provided many more ideas. Everything we saw in Paris was put into a historical context. The local guides enrich the experience in ways that you just can't do on your own. This tour made us more confident travelers who can use local transit to go anywhere in the city and see anything and everything. In short, this tour empowered us as travelers.

"Wow" is the first word out of mouth when I think of the 7-day Rick Steves Paris vacation I took October 4-10, 2015. It was my first trip not just to Paris but to Europe, and it was unforgettable. Everything was incredible, I can't remember any one bad thing that happened. Daniela our guide was very patient with our group. She did a great job explaining the Paris metro system and how to get from point A to B. All of our guides in Paris were excellent! Tres bon Rick Steves!

I was so,so pleased with the tour in that it offered so much exposure to the city. Through the museums we went to, navigating the metro like a pro, meandering through the charming streets, bistro's and city sections. Each morning our tour took us to a new area to explore. After lunch we had the freedom to explore it more, visit a suggested place or move to some area of interest somewhere else. I loved this freedom, especially since that was my one reservation about going on a regimented tour.

This was our first trip to Paris. My husband and I had a very good tour experience. I liked the smaller group, itinerary was good at hitting the highlights. The guide was very good and I really liked the utilization of the local guides. Also, the premise of the tour was good. Very educational on getting around (transportation), it hit on many levels on viewing art and the monuments, etc. I liked the short bus tour to introduce us to the area on the first day.

The weather in Paris was rather uncooperative, but it didn't hold us back from experiencing the designated sites. Our tour group was very compatible (this was our fourth tour and we've never had a group yet that wasn't) and although we saw many sites together, we were encouraged by Rolinka to venture out on our own. There is a lot to experience in Paris and thus a lot packed in to five short days.........would like to go back on our own some time and see these sites in greater depth.

"Each day held its own "wow" moments. Some were amazingly spectacular--the first sighting of the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower at night, the stained glass windows of Sainte Chapelle, Monet's water lilies, and the grandeur of the Louvre and Versailles. Some were humbling--memorials dedicated to those lost in World War II and Notre Dame Cathedral. And others captured the joy of living in the moment--sitting at a sidewalk café on a rainy afternoon, watching the vibrant city pass by."

I was amazed at the depth and beauty of Paris. There was so much to take in. Even though I am physical in my job as a massage therapist and play tennis 3 x a week as well as qi gong practices was not able to feel I had good enough energy to really appreciate the extraordinary sights and sounds of the city. I am of 2 minds about how it could have worked better for me. I needed more down time,as did my two co pan ions, yet I could not close what I would have left out in order to do that.

There are only two reasons why I didn't rate the overall experience as Outstanding. 1) rained all but one day (not your fault) 2) too many people on this type of tour, prefer a smaller group between 12 - 16. Use of public transportation is the main reason for this comment. The tour guide was amazing in this area, but I didn't like 24 people on buses, metro or train.

This was our fifth Rick Steve's tour but our first single city tour. It was nice not having to travel every couple of days and staying in one location gave us more time to see all of the sights. Our escort, Chris was as professional and personable as all of our previous guides. Having been to a foreign country before, I knew a little bit about traveling out of the country. Going to europe however was an experience that I dont think can be matched by many places. I believe that without the Rick Steves tour guiding us around the city of Paris, I wouldnt have been able to had as much fun as I did. Our tour guide, Marie was an amzaing person to get to know and her superior knowledge of the city was extremely helpful. As a whole the trip was as good as a tour gets!

I loved the tour! We had a great guide who made tremendous effort to ensure everything went smoothly. Thete were plenty of walking tours, dinners together, and excursions, but there was also ample time for our own excursions. We used Rick's city guidebook and went to several restaurants that were recommended. They were all good. The trip overall was great; it just went by way too fast.

I don't know where to start! I loved every minute of our tour, from meeting the group on the first day to sharing a love of learning and adventure throughout our week together. When my husband and I first began researching tours, we got so excited when we read what the Rick Steves' tour had to offer - it was exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a small, intimate group that focused on the history of Paris. It was most enjoyable meeting and getting to know our travel companions.

We had a wonderful trip and we were celebrating our 35th anniversary. This was our first trip to Paris, so we would not have known how to approach touring Paris on our own. Having a guide and itinerary made the trip much less stressful. We saw a lot and learned a lot. And walked a lot and ate a lot.... There was a good balance between planned outings and time to go out on our own: I liked that our time was mostly planned but there were several chunks of time when we were free to go on our own.

Our tour was fantastic. Our tour guide, Julie, was very knowledgeable and was very capable of managing us as a group and helping things go smoothly. The local guides for the different museums and walks were chosen well. Julie did a good job of showing us the Rick Steves way of touring and enabling us to forge ahead on our own. This was my first tour and I couldn't ask for a better tour experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I was thrilled to see Monet's Impression: Sunset (not on the main tour, but we were able to find our way to the Marmottan to see it). I saw fireworks shot from the Eiffel Tower with incredible artistry. I succeeded in a brief conversation in French with a waitress that went beyond ordering food. But most important, I learned about cultural differences in etiquette (partly due to the wonderful explanations by our guide Julie) that are easily misunderstood and easily overcome with that knowledge."

The tour met our expectations and there were no unwanted surprises. We took our granddaughter (13 years old) for she had told us that she really wanted to see/visit the Eiffel Tower. Our hotel was within walking distance of the tower and we took Rick Steves' advice and arrived two days before the tour and stayed two days after the tour at the same hotel. We arranged for 'no wait in line' tickets for entrance to the tower and experienced all levels at our leisure which thrilled our granddaughter.

We were hesitant to be on a tour, as we always plan our own travel, keeping our own schedule. NOW, I am a believer in Rick Steves tours!!! The hotel was inviting; excellent breakfasts; attentive staff; and the air conditioning system kept us cool during an extreme heat wave. Our group of 24 was an eclectic group from all of the USA and Canada. We were able to spend some quality time with individuals, a family, or a couple as were toured. We were able to get to know people on a personal level.

This was a dream come true. Was marking two important occasions in my life. Beautiful city. Was here 45 years ago by myself and now wanted to put the city "together". Can't say enough about Rebecca. More later. Loved that different sections were isolated into a different trip yet tied together as the overview of the city made sense. Good mixture of structured time and free time and different times of day for each. Hotel was fab and restaurants and food delicious. the 7arr. rocks

This tour was fabulous. Arnaud, really focused on providing us with THE BEST of everything, He is so knowledgeable. I feel that Arnaud was focused on providing the most bang for the buck, and he merits a blue ribbon for his efforts. I came home feeling that I had really SEEN Paris, tasted Paris, experienced Paris and fallen quite in love with It. My mistake was in booking 7 Days in London immediately following. That should only be allowed for the young &/or extremely fit!! For real.

I loved that we were on the street walking or riding the Metro/bus. I felt like a Parisian and fell in love with Paris. Our guide, Arneau, was continuously filling our minds with the history, art, nuances, and gossip of Paris. This made the city come alive. He also gave us some tips to help us find wonderful restaurants, cafes, and things to do in our off time. He also provided great tips to keep us safe and free from offending. The people of Paris were lovely, kind, helpful and patient.

This was our first Rick Steves tour and it exceeded our expectations! Having rail/museum passes was a great idea. We used them in our off time. Allowing free time also enabled us to do exciting things on our own, like a preplanned night concert at San Chappelle and a night visit to level 3 of the Eiffel tower Time is critical on vacation-so the preplanned tour was efficient and well worth the cost. As suggested by R/Steves, we arrived several days early & went on a Loire bus tour

"Arno's(tour guide)choice of 3 group restaurants/menus was great The Rue Cler area & hotel was perfect as it was close to Eiffel tower, had A/C, an elevator and a great breakfast to start each day The R/Steves guidebook alerted us to take a picnic lunch to the Eiffel Tower which we did on the day B4 the tour and it was memorable Arno's knowledge of Paris & France was solid and he was fun. Having subject matter experts at D'Orsay, Versailles and Montmartre added a lot of value"

In my opinion it was a wow experience! Paris was fantastic! The things that made it an extreme positive were the guides and neighborhoods. Our primary guide, Arnaud, was fantastic. His breadth of knowledge and terrific personality made each site come to life. We had three topical guides, one each at Montmartre, the Louvre, and the Orangerie. All were outstanding. Cerise at Montmartre has such passion for her subject. The information she imparted heightened our visit to the Orangerie, along with the excellent guide we had there also.

"Can't really point to just one, so I'll give you a few... * Montmartre - great history lesson re. Because we knew the city decently, we maximized those days thanks to Arnaud and the tour"

Wonderful. We were looking for an Art-History intensive tour as a graduation gift for our daughter, and this tour provided that in spades, plus much more. The tour's coverage of the art, history and culture, and how each influenced the other, made each presentation mean even more. The tour's high level of organization and preparation meant that we could relax and enjoy the tour, without worrying about the logistics or details of planning the trip or navigating an unfamiliar city.

My husband and I brought our 18 year old granddaughter who had just graduated from high school. We had been to Paris 4 times so we kind of saw it thru her eyes this time. She was thrilled. We had never done a Rick Steves trip before but felt that was the best way for her to see everything rather than leaving it up to us. We were amazed at how well run every part of the tour was. It was a very nice little hotel and the staff extremely helpful. Kristen was absolutely fabulous.

The tour exceeded my expectations. I'm not usually interested in tour groups, but my wife prefers a more structured approach. I took a chance on this tour based on the description and the reviews (both on your site and other sites). I thought it was an excellent hybrid, which allowed us a lot of latitude to explore on our own, while also being guided around the highlights, which we would have hit, anyway. By the way, I'd never heard of Rick Steves prior to signing up for the tour.

We had excellent weather and an excellent tour guide so how could my experience be other than EXCELLENT! I have used Rick Steves' travel books to tour Ireland, England, Scotland, Provence,Tuscany, Israel and Rome, alone or with my friends, and I have practiced what he has preached, but this was my first "Rick Steves Tour". We love Rick Steve's tours which give us a combination of planned activities and free time. This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We are very happy with the experience. We learned how navigate the city by the metro, and also, by walking power. We have a good idea of the various neighborhoods, and where the main attractions are located. Each day was divided between group activities and free time to explore on your own. Kristen Michel was a jewel as a tour leader. Her smiling face, extensive knowledge of Paris, quick wit, and most of all her caring for us travelers with watchfulness and empathy, made our tour special. The mix of "tour" versus free time well done. Kristen did an outstanding job of explaining customs, locations, ways to get around. Limiting the tour size to 24 is a really good idea. You don't feel quite as much as if you're a member of a cattle herd, and we had a chance to get to know one another. The Louvre, while great, I would have passed on. Too crowded and could not spend time enjoying a particular piece of art. Prefer time spent in smaller museums. L'Orangerie was great.

Our Paris Tour was awesome! It was precisely what we had hoped for. We knew when we signed up for this tour that 7 days would not be sufficient to cover all of the museums, tourists attractions, street markets, cafes and upscale restaurants that we would want to visit. So, we tacked on another full week on our own. Paris has so many places to visit. Our tour included the highlights plus it gave us time to explore the places that were of special interest to us. The metro pass was much appreciated as it got us through the city and saved time. "This is a hard choice since Paris is Paris and I think it is a "wow" no matter where you are in the city. The sight that did take my breath away was Sainte -Chapelle chapel. The stained glass windows were so beautiful and they covered every wall in the chapel. Also the fact that two thirds of it is 13th century original. I could have stayed in there much longer. There was a good blend of supervision and on-our-own time. Kristen was not overbearing about that at all. We all had the opportunity to be on our own. I like the size of the RS tours. Logistically easier and the people are likable and adaptable. Great itinerary.

My husband and I were thrilled with our very first Europe experience. We were extremely tired at the end, but have ourselves to blame for that because we stayed active before, during, and after the tour. Our guide was very experienced and taught us how to maneuver on our own in Paris. Every detail was so well planned, and even though we had the itinerary ahead of time, there were always welcome surprises. We are already planning our next Rick Steves tour.

"One of my favorites was coming face to face with Van Gogh self portraits and his other paintings at the Orsay Museum. That actually brought me to tears. This was on a free afternoon, but recommended by our guide. Our time at the Orangerie viewing Monet's water lilies, and my favorite, Renoir, with our very fabulous private guide, was a thrill I will never forget. And a guided tour in English of the Opera Garnier, our guide's favorite Paris building, was incredible."

Our tour was all that we hoped for and more. The hotel was a perfect location and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. The guides we had on our museum and neighborhood tours were experts and great guides. We managed to see much of Paris is one week and felt the choice of museums, neighborhood walking tours, restaurants, and historic sites was varied and well planned. We took a tour of the Eiffel Tower on our own and had "free -time" most days to do things not included on tour.

My friend and I decided to try a Rick Steves tour as the beginning of our first time in Europe. We continued on to Switzerland and Italy on our own. Rebecca provided a wonderful (re)introduction to Paris...in my case my third visit, but first with guides. Icing on a delicious cake. The individual site guides were knowledgable, open to questions and contact with tour members. Hotel location, room, & services - including breakfasts - were all very good. Just the right amount of time devoted to the guided tour and our own free time to explore the city on our own, from the Porte de Vanves flea market, Luxembourg Garden, Rodin Museum and everywhere else our tired feet or the Metro could go. For a first time visitor to France, this tour was a wonderful introduction. I accompanied a lifelong friend on this tour at her invitation though I have been to France 10 times in my adult life and lived there with my family in my youth. It was a good way for a new person to experience this lovely country though not exactly a way to go if one has been a frequent visitor.

The tour was an excellent experience for people who had visited Paris and those who hadn't. The itinerary was just right with a balance between group activities and independent options. One of Patrick's goals was to make us feel comfortable using public transportation so that we could explore and have adventure on our own. We all memorized the mantra, "Three stops to Concorde," and were successful at navigation.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were several: 1) as we approached Versailles, the sun glinting off the gates was incredible and made clear the idea that political power and impressive architecture went hand-in-hand; 2) Joelle's descriptive background for Monet's Water Lilies in the Orangerie brought the paintings to life; 3) Patrick's wine-tasting class highlighted the differences and similarities between wine consumption in the US and France."

Tour went very well! I give very high marks to Rolinka - as she is obviously a very experienced and skilled guide and went out of her way to make this a very enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend Rolinka and this tour for anyone looking for a good overview of Paris and key places to see.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Orsay museum. While we visited the Louve and Orangerie, the Orsay was much more manageable and a great venue (former train station). It just felt more "user friendly" than the sometimes overwhelming Louve museums. Also loved Montmartre. The winding streets, Sacre Cour and the view of Paris from the hilltop."

My first time trip to Paris was great.Well I had a big trouble from first day. Through my tour I really felt other tour members kindness and specially our guide Rolinka helped me so much. I also really liked old buildings in Paris. And most important thing for me, Food was good.(cakes, breads, and many) Next time if I have a chance to go somewhere in Europe, again I will pick Rick Steve's tour.

Very pleased with hotel location. Very convenient to Metro, restaurants, and museums. Joelle was so accommodating when we checked into hotel. She very graciously answered my many questions. She worked many hours and was always smiling and patient. She is a true asset and a treasure.

The only thing that limited my completely adoring the experience was my own feet. I learned that when I go places, each experience will involve my feet in some unexpected way. I am getting older I guess, and darn!

Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Paris: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews and articles, plus find a list of recommended books and movies.

Transportation

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your tour hotel, as well as contact information for your hotel in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

If you plan to travel in Europe before or after your tour, Paris is perfectly located for quick trips around France or to neighboring countries. London is only three hours away by the Chunnel train; Brussels and Bruges are about two hours away; and Amsterdam is a mere four-hour train ride.

Flying within Europe can be reasonable. Ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips and decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you need more information about additional European travel or for specific questions about your tour, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing On Your Own

If you arrive in Paris before your tour begins, learn the Métro (subway) system and use Rick Steves Paris guidebook for sightseeing ideas and good-value restaurants. If you are in Paris in the off-season, it's a good idea to double-check museum hours and closures with a quick call.

Here are suggestions for sightseeing in Paris that we do not do as a group: Arc de Triomphe*; Les Invalides*; Jewish Art & History*, Marmottan, and Pompidou* museums; Eiffel Tower; St. Sulpice organ concert; Père-Lachaise cemetery; Paris sewer tour; day trips to Monet's Giverny garden, Chartres, Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau*.  (* Entry is free with the Paris Museum Pass you’ll be given when the tour begins. To save money, you may want to save a couple of these for your free afternoons.)

The Marmottan museum is closed Mondays, and the Jewish Art & History Museum is closed Saturdays; most other museums are closed Tuesdays. Confirm all sightseeing plans with a tourist information office.

This tour does not include a visit to the Eiffel Tower. However it is often a highlight for any traveler and one we highly recommend. Avoid the lines by booking tickets several weeks in advance at: http://ticket.toureiffel.fr. Pre- or post-tour is the best time to visit the tower. If you need to visit the tower during the tour, consider making a reservation for Day 2 or Day 5 after 16:00 or any evening after 22:00.
