Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Paris

We'll meet at 5 p.m. at our hotel for a short "bienvenue à Paris" meeting. Then we'll take an orientation walk through our neighborhood, followed by time to get acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 2: Historic Paris and Sainte-Chapelle

Let's begin where Paris did, on the Ile de la Cité. Your guide will lead a walking tour of the city's early history, including a pair of Europe's most significant medieval Gothic churches — the legendary and resilient Notre-Dame Cathedral (exterior) and the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle — along with a stroll through the bohemian Latin Quarter. This afternoon, you'll be free to explore more of Paris, including the world's greatest collection of Impressionist art — from Monet and Degas to Cézanne and Gauguin and more — at the Orsay Museum.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 3: Neighborhood Paris and the Louvre

This morning we'll take a more intimate look at Paris and what gives the French their joie de vivre with a promenade through one of your guide's favorite Parisian neighborhoods. Then we are off to the Louvre Museum (when available). With your smartphone in hand and the Rick Steves Audio Europe™ app, Rick's voice will guide you through timeless treasures including the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and hundreds more. Your afternoon will be free to be inspired by Monet's incredible Water Lilies at the Orangerie, compelled to climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, or take a classy stroll along the Champs-Elysées.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Paris.

Day 4: Medieval Guédelon and Bourges

Today we'll leave Paris and head for the Château de Guédelon — a medieval castle being built today in Burgundy using 13th-century materials and techniques. Local experts may give us a close-up look at masons cutting limestone, sheep being sheared, and blacksmiths at work. Then we'll drive past farms, forests, and vineyards to the overlooked town of Bourges. Once we arrive we'll wander along the cobbled lanes and medieval half-timbered houses on a walking tour with a local guide. Our tour will culminate with a visit of Bourges' Cathédrale St-Etienne, where we'll learn how to read some of France's most remarkable and original medieval stained glass before having dinner together this evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Bourges.

Day 5: The Loire and Chambord

Today we'll head for the biggest and brightest of the Loire Valley châteaux — Chambord — where 365 fireplaces warmed royal hunting parties for more than 500 years. We'll have ample time to visit this magnificent château, its expansive grounds, and find some lunch. A bit farther up the road, our own Loire Valley accommodations will be every bit as French, but a little more down-to-earth. Dinner together tonight.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in the Loire Valley.

Day 6: Chenonceau and Amboise

This morning we'll visit the elegant, river-straddling, 16th-century Château de Chenonceau. We'll learn more about royal life in France and have plenty of free time to roam its opulent interior and gardens. This afternoon you'll have time on your own in Amboise to find lunch and sightsee. You can choose to visit Leonardo da Vinci's home, Clos-Lucé, and marvel at the working models of the Renaissance Man's cleverest inventions; tour Amboise's cliff-hanging castle; or wander the pleasant pedestrian-friendly streets.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in the Loire Valley.

Day 7: Brittany and Mont St-Michel

We'll depart the Loire Valley this morning and make a beeline to Brittany. We'll stop for lunch and a walk through a quintessential Breton town, where we'll learn about the Bretons' Celtic origins. Later this afternoon, we'll take a short drive to the timeless, picture-perfect island of Mont St-Michel. We'll arrive as the tourist tide recedes, ensuring a less crowded experience here. We'll share dinner together and stay on the Mont itself.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep on Mont St-Michel.

Day 8: A Taste of Normandy

This morning we'll take a walking tour of Mont St-Michel's town and its towering abbey to learn about local legends, monastic life, and the far-reaching influences exerted by abbeys in French history. Then we'll drive into the heart of Normandy, where we'll stop by a local ciderie and sample some Norman specialties before settling into our accommodations for the evening.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Normandy.

Day 9: Normandy's D-Day Beaches

We'll spend the day with a local expert who will give us a powerful tour of the Normandy beaches where, in June of 1944, the Allied D-Day landings took place by sea and air. We'll visit the American Cemetery, where 10,000 stark white markers memorialize the Americans who gave their lives on the beaches below. We'll also visit the strategic town of Sainte-Mère Eglise, the airborne drop site made famous by The Longest Day and Band of Brothers. We'll return to our Normandy home base in time for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Normandy.

Day 10: Monet's Gardens at Giverny

We'll depart early this morning to visit Monet's beautifully preserved, masterpiece-inspiring gardens in the town of Giverny. In addition to the serene ponds made famous by Monet's paintings, we'll also see his house, studio, and Japanese garden. After free time for lunch, we'll make our way back to Paris and a farewell feast together tonight, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Santé!

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Paris.

Day 11: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Paris' airports by taxi, shuttle, or public transportation. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Merci et au revoir!

(This tour does not include the Eiffel Tower. To avoid its long lines, we recommend booking tickets several weeks in advance. For details, see our Eiffel Tower ticket tips for tour members.)

It was a wonderful tour. I appreciated the extras like the wine tasting and the sampling of calvados. All of the guides were outstanding - the walk around Les Halles, the Louvre, Mont St.Michel, and Normandy. They were knowledgeable, interesting and made each experience so much more meaningful. The Normandy guide's tour was an emotional experience. You could tell it was very personal for him. It was fittingly a somber day. Our tour director, Linda, was an absolute gem. Funny, knowledgeable

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Chenanceau, Normandy, Mont St.Michel. It's difficult to narrow down. Every American should make a pilgrimage to Normandy. It's a reminder of the tragic cost of war. I was deeply grateful to the French people for the respect and reverence they still show for the Allies' sacrifice all these years later. That means a great deal to me. Each little town we visited I could have spent more time in - Bourges, Dinan, Amboise. Truly a beautiful country. Wow!"

Fantastic! Already shopping for the next Rick Steves Tour. Our guide Richard, provided information that was interesting and fun. He made the trip even more fun and memorable. The tour was a great introduction to France. It hit the "must see" aspects of Paris and through the Loire region and in Normandy. Everything was very efficient, and our tour guide was great, as was our driver, and the various people we encountered along the way who were part of the tour experience. The opportunities to experience food and people were great, as well.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Mont St. Michel is definitely a "wow" experience, from the moment you first encounter it. I would say the very beginning, in Paris, from walking up to the Hotel de Ville to crossing the river to arriving at (and entering) Notre Dame were signature moments. "

The joy of art at The Louve, Musee De L’Orangerie, Musee d’Orsay. Wandering around Mont Saint Michel. Strolling and eating in small French towns. Experiencing chateaus, churches and cathedrals. Touring Normandy beaches, cemeteries and museums. The peaceful beauty of Monet’s home in Giverny."

Everything went smoothly and better than I expected given a 'group' experience. I was impressed that all the participants were on time, every time. Several of the places I experienced I would not have on my own, and the smaller cities stood out more uniquely.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Attending morning prayers at Mont St Michel with the monk and the beautiful harmonies of the nuns. An ebike ride outside of Amboise and a string ensemble in Madeliene cathedral. All of those were personal 'add ons' but without the tour I wouldn't have had the opportunity. My tour wow - was the bakery inside the highway reststops!! Wow!"

This tour was excellent and far exceeded my expectations. I think a big part of this was due to having an exceptional tour guide. Linda was amazing. And fun. And patient. She provided detailed information about each stop along the way. Even giving us a lesson on how to navigate the train. Due to food allergies, I brought along some staples, as I didn't expect my dietary needs would be met. Instead, Linda was a "watch dog", making sure that accommodations were in place

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I didn't realize that at each site, we would have an additional guide with expertise in the area. A "wow" moment for me was being present in the abbey of St Mont Michel for the chanting and singing by the nuns and priests. Also, another concert I happened upon. For my husband, it was Normandy and our excellent guide, Dale Booth. The camaraderie of our group was amazing, as was Linda's facilitation of every detail along the way. A Paris traffic jam was a wow, along with a driver's skills."

He helped me understand the circumstances the Americans faced on June 6, 1944 and enhanced my appreciation of their sacrifices."

A good mix of history, culture, and sites with architectural interest. Paris neighborhood walking tours were informative and fun, and we enjoyed exploring the French countryside, Loire Valley Châteaux, and small towns and villages. Mont Saint-Michel Abbey was good, but we were bothered by the heat and noise during our hotel stay. All in all, this was a great experience made even better with our wonderful tour guide. Linda’s knowledge, passion for France, and vibrant personality, made it special.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"After touring nearby Notre-Dame cathedral (the "Grand Dame"), we ventured inside the smaller, royal chapel, Sainte-Chapelle. Standing there, surrounded by the chapel’s brilliant 13th century stained glass windows that reach up to the domed ceiling far above, was an experience that is hard to capture in words or photos. The transcendent feeling inspired by these walls of light was something that will stay with me long after our visit."

Fun, educational and Tasty! Marie orchestrated our group’s schedule & activities with knowledge, kindness and humor. I appreciate her very much. We had so many amazing local guides. Stuart’s vivid yet reverent telling of the events of D-Day morning as we stood on the beaches of Normandy and his ongoing personal effort to “not let us forget”. Our hilarious, yet very educational experience with our host Nicolas at his winery and the equally entertaining Anthony at the cider tasting.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Sometimes it’s the small things… • Returning to Paris and driving down Avenue des Champs-Élysées, singing Les Champs-Elysées (yes, it’s still stuck in my head, thank you very much Marie) as we circled the Arc de Triomphe. • The dawn climb to the Abbey at Mont-Saint-Michel, and the view as the sun rose • Twirling in the ballroom at Château de Chenonceau and the apple trees in the garden. Catching tour members in the double helix staircase window at Chambord. • New and old friends to laugh with."

I had apprehension traveling to France. Not just from the language barrier but because of the adage that the French are rude. I came home with a new perspective on the French culture. So much to take in what now seems like a short amount of time. Such memorable experiences made all the better by our excellent tour guide Arnaud. We had a great time with an outstanding guide, Arnaud. The sites that we visited were very good. We experienced small towns with a real French flair.

"There were a few WOW moments; The refurbished Norte Dame Catheral was beautiful to see and experience. Mont St Michael was a fun adventure. Arriving late and leaving early to avoid crowds was well timed. Driving around Normandy, D-day beaches and cemeteries was very emotional given the loss of life of all the young men and women. "

My first RS tour was amazing. Most of the people had been on many trips which speaks highly of RS tours. Our guide Arnaud was very informative and had a great sense of humor. He learned everyone's name on the first day. The hotels were great and the sites were amazing. The local guides were awesome. I am ready to sign up for the next one!

"Going to Normandy was to me a Wow moment. I learned so much and wanted to learn more. The local guide Mark was so knowledgeable. It was a history lesson. The prior week in London, I had attended the Churchhill War Room which was a nice prequel. Came home and watched Saving Private Ryan again over Memorial weekend. I now have a new and greater appreciation for all countries and men who participated. "

This tour was a great blend of medieval and WW2 sites. Whether it is the grandeur of places like Chambord, the Bourges Cathedral, and Mont-Saint-Michel or the quiet beauty of the flowers lining the streets of Amboise and the paths of Monet’s garden, there is always something that will captivate you. Our lovely guide Linda was witty, personable, and knowledgeable, and she and all the other guides on this trip really helped bring the history of these places to life.

This was my first trip to France, and the 'Paris and the Heart of France' tour provided a great introduction to the country. The guides provided the 'what' and even more importantly the 'why' of the places, people and history. The small towns we stayed in allowed me to experience the 'real' France and French people outside the tourist areas.

Great tour. Guide Steve gave informative history lessons and interesting background on the sites we visited. He made a special meet up and dinners to introduce the group to each other. Steve gave us little treats, sweets, wine, cheese, a macaroni. We liked the info on the culture, history, and background. The hotels were great, set in the old town areas. We loved big breakfast brunches, which we worked off by hiking and climbing. This RS tour exceeded our high expectations!

Very helpful and personable guide. I appreciated the timeline expectations so that we weren't always waiting for people. Good hotels (though I thought the breakfasts were boring). Should have had more stops/towns in Brittany, incl coast line.

Magnifique! “Paris and the Heart of France” was my second Rick Steve’s tour and I am already planning number 3! This trip was like a fine glass of french wine: rich and silky smooth, with notes of beauty and color, balanced and complex with a zesty, lingering feel. Like a world class sommelier, our guide Veronique led us on a journey of discovery as we explored big cities and small towns, historic landmarks and sacred spaces. With grace, class and humor, she shared her love of France with us.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Sitting under an ancient tree in the garden of a chateau tasting perfectly paired wine and cheese on a postcard perfect day…that's a WOW! Waking up to watch the tide coming in on Mont Saint-Michel…another WOW! Sitting on the ledge of my window watching the sun set on Gold Beach in Normandy thinking about all I had learned about D-Day…a quiet wow. Running to the Eiffel Tower in the rain with new friends on our last night in Paris to watch her light up…yes, a WOW. So many WOWs!"

Our guide, Veronique, was amazing! She kept our group very well organized and was always available to address any questions we might have. And our bus driver Jacques was friendly and an expert driver, maneuvering the bus through small streets in the many towns that we visited. The hotels we stayed in were well located in interesting areas.

This was our 5th Rick Steves tour and one of the absolute best. Was it the guide (Veronique), the itinerary, the local guides (D-day beach), the extra experiences (wine tasting at a chateau, cider tasting in Normandy), or just the camaraderie that developed with our fellow travelers? Or, all of the above. Normally, after a European trip the last thing we want to do is get back on a plane. This time we immediately got in touch with some of our new friends and started planning our next RS trip.

Our Rick Steves Best of France tour was magical. Each hotel, each stop, each meal together, each turn in the road absolutely delighted me. Everything was easier than we expected it to be. Having been on previos tours, I expected to be able mix with the other tour participants and the expectation was quickly met. From the first group walk around the hotel's neighborhood on the way to our first shared meal we could feel ourselves fitting in with all these people we had never met before. She threaded a fine needle between relating to Americans and also thoroughly understanding the culture where we visited. I will always have fond memories of her.

I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing Paris with a guide, after numerous independent visits, and seeing parts of France that were off the beaten track (Guédelon), extraordinary (a night on Mont St Michel) and emotionally moving (Normandy’s D-Day beaches). Our guide, Arnaud, is quintessentially French and steered our trip with elan. We had a super-congenial group, many on their first RS trip, that added to the overall good vibe.

The tour consistently hit the right balance of Paris vs. the countryside, group time vs. on-your-own time, etc. We really enjoyed meeting and spending time with everyone in our group. My first Rick Steve's Tour and my first time to Europe. I am extremely pleased with the tour. It was so informative and delightful. We had a great group of merry travelers and we kept up an invigorating pace. Whew! We also had down time to do things on our own and rest.

Let me start by saying tour groups are not my thing. I went to humor a friend. I was not looking forward to being on a tour bus or a pre-arranged schedule. Looking back on it, it's still not my favorite way to travel but it wasn't bad either. I enjoyed most of the activities and stops. The best part about it was going places I normally wouldn't have gone and meeting people I normally wouldn't have met. The tour guides provided tons of extra info about each locale that was very interesting!

I love Rick Steves tours because they're easy, informative and a decent price point. Easy in that, I'm not booking hotels, tickets, and creating an itinerary. The joy of the itinerary is we see places we wouldn't have thought of going to. Hotels: looking for a mid price point & something quaint, not a cookie cutter hotel room. The only two hotels that were lacking was the one in Amboise, but it appears to be getting done over, and at Mont St. Michel, but I kind of expected a spartan one there.

One of the most important advantages of the RS Tours is having a guide who gives you the inside information about the culture. From the subtleties of why saying Bonjour immediately to someone matters so much to the French to what to look out for on the subway to be safe, our guide, Linda, provided us with that and much more. She also understood how to gauge the various needs of the group and also kept things lively and fun.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably spending the night at Mont St. Michel. When I ran into some people from another tour at our hotel and told them we not only visited but spent the night, they were awestruck (and a little jealous.) A second favorite would be learning the history of Normandy beyond what just happened on Omaha Beach. Our local guide, Dale, was extremely passionate and knowledgable about the subject and literally brought many of us to tears during our related stops during the day. "

The itinerary was so well timed and executed. Tours were set so that we were able to bypass large crowds. The best example of this was the visit to Le Mont Saint Michel. Arriving in the late afternoon (as the crowds were leaving), spending the night, and touring early in the morning before the daily crowds arrived was perfect!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Everyday held a new "wow" moment. Stuart, our guide for the Beaches of Normandy, did an excellent job of painting the picture of what happened during that momentous event. His stories made it easy to visualize the soldiers and heroism of those days. Taps at the American Cemetery was the perfect culmination of the day. Second favorite "wow" moment was Giverny - the house and gardens. "

This was a very good tour experience. We have been on 10 RS Tours; this tour was our first and a repeat for number 10. It was good. We had just finished Rick’s Eastern France tour, + a few days touring on our own, so it’s hard not to compare the two tours (guides, fellow travelers, sites, so many churches!). Our guide developed laryngitis on Day 4, which consumed a lot of her talking points and energy. She powered through and regained her full voice after a few days, but it was more of a distraction/ focus than it needed to be.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This was an excellent tour from start to finish. I credit our guide Claire, a true professional. She offered special insight through her own experience moving to France, while navigating a random group of travellers around Paris and the French countryside. I witnessed her going beyond her professional responsibilities to help individual tour members. She was flexible and resourceful when unforeseen issues arose. I have completed 11 RSE tours and count Claire in the top tier of guides.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Le Mont St-Michel was spectacular. Normandy--I will never forget the experience of the D-Day history lesson. Stuart's vivid storytelling, the beautiful beaches, the sacrifices that played out, right where we stood. The enduring importance of Allies, the solemnity and respect of an American cemetery on the French coast. It catches my breath still today. On a lighter note, Monet's gardens were delightful. I've ordered the book Monet:The Restless Vision for a solid winter read."

The restaurant selections for our group dinners was very good - both interesting and delicious.

Of course, Paris overall was a wow several days - especially seeing the nighttime view of the city from atop the Eifel Tower. The visit to the D-Day beaches and the American cemetery was a very different kind of moment - one every American should experience to better appreciate the bravery and sacrifice made by so many."

Fabulous first-time visit to France: so much art, architecture, culture, food experiences! I enjoyed the variety of sights, from Mont St. Michel to Bourges to Normandy beaches to Giverny. Seeing what I had studied in history is amazing. Patrick and the local tour guides did a fantastic job educating us about the history, the culture, and also travel/cultural skills like taking the Metro. Lots of history, from medieval to present, and visits to "humble" chateaus like Guedelon, and royal chateaus, fortresses, and gardens. Really enjoyed the winery and cidery visits, as well as the group dinners.

"D-Day beaches and standing and walking or driving through an area that had such impact on both the past and the present. It was our most exhausting day, and for me the most emotional and likely the place of long-lasting memories. Spiraling up the staircase and seeing the stained glass at Sainte Chapelle probably second "wow""

Very unlike our usual travel experience, we were on our own a bit more than we usually are, but the structure and guidance provided by Rebecca kept us comfortably both within and outside of our usual comfort zone. The accommodations were very good, the itinerary first-rate. At each days’ portion of the tour that was conducted by Rebecca or another guide, we always felt enriched and rewarded by the experience. This was our 7th RS tour. Honestly, for a long time France was not high on my list of tour destinations since I went there on a high school French class tour. Glad I changed my mind. Great knowledge of the history of France and the sites and wonderfully amusing stories and interaction with the group.

This was our first Rick Steves' tour. We were impressed by how organized and thorough the tour was. Although I have traveled to France many times, this was my first tour. I discovered I am not a tour type, much preferring to see things on my own. Having said that, I think the Rick Steves tour was a good one, covering many sights of interest, with a great guide and bus driver. But too much standing around listening to background for my taste. I could have covered much more on my own time. Guess it was a good learning experience for me!

our tour guide arnaud was exception at all he had prepared for us. from the initial meeting of the group, to the alerting us to need to pack a smaller bag to go to mont st michel, he was prepared at all times for all events, and handled surprises without stress.

Very interesting and enjoyable tour. We had a great fun group. We saw a variety of interesting sites. Our tour guide, Arnaud, was great. He was organized and very knowledgeable. He tried to show/teach us many things about French history, people, regions and food. I would have liked more time at Normandy. The local guide at Normandy was excellent. I enjoyed all the local guides. I also enjoyed the lunch/break stops, especially the wine and cheese tasting and the seaside town with the oysters.

Rick’s tours are always filled with a great mix of pleasure along with fascinating history. This was our second tour with his group and we just thoroughly enjoyed both. It’s very good about pushing you to see enough things without exhausting you to the point of not wanting to see anything else.

"The tour of Omaha Beach was probably my highlight. To understand what it took to still take that stronghold, even through all the mishaps and disadvantages, was a true testament to courage and perseverance of the soldiers that day. "

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your online customer account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your customer account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Paris' Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) airports.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves France guidebook.
