Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at our hotel at 3 p.m. this afternoon. After a short "Welcome to Germany" meeting, we'll take a walking tour of Cologne, tracing the city's Roman origins and cultural rise to Germany's religious center in the Middle Ages. Together, we'll marvel from the exterior the scale of Northern Europe's most massive Gothic church, Cologne Cathedral, and appreciate how it survived the city bombings during WWII. Then, we'll get further acquainted over a dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Cologne.

Day 2: Burg Eltz and the Mosel River

We'll begin our day with a morning drive to the Mosel River and the mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence — where we'll tour the complex and experience firsthand how lords and ladies lived 500 years ago. Before leaving the valley behind, we'll stop in the über-quaint village of Beilstein for lunch together along the riverbank. We'll return to Cologne in the late afternoon with time for you to discover more of Cologne's history at one of its charming museums..

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4.5 hours. Sleep in Cologne.

Day 3: Elegant Baden-Baden

This morning, we'll hop aboard our big, comfy bus and head toward the Black Forest and the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival, we'll take an orientation stroll through town showcasing the stylish streets, grand casino, and famous baths. Then you'll have the rest of the day free to wander along the shaded riverside promenade, put on your fanciest duds and visit the casino, or relax with a long soak before you enjoy dinner on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Baden-Baden.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to a nearby luge course for a ride on a tiny sled with wheels (weather permitting) before our arrival at the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, leaving some free time to linger in the past and order up some lunch (prepare for the wurst!). Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in clifftop Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views and have dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 5: The Schilthorn and Hiking in the Swiss Alps

Let's begin the day with a thrilling ride up the gondola lift to the top of the 10,000-foot Schilthorn with a view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. The rest of the day is all yours to loiter in the thin air, find your way back down to Mürren, and explore more of the magnificent mountains on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

Today you're free to explore more of Europe's most dramatic scenery. You may consider a mountain excursion that combines a narrow-gauge railway, a gondola lift, and a spectacular alpine walk above the tree line, surrounded by a panorama of cut-glass peaks…or wander through the valley and walk to the thundering Trümmelbach Falls, a unique set of waterfalls encased behind the valley walls. This evening, we'll regroup for dinner together at our mountain chalet.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No Bus. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairy-tale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens, and oompah-hospitality. Tonight, we'll enjoy dinner together in Munich.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Munich.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town, learning about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairy-tale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle (when available). After hiking back down, you'll have free time for lunch before leaving Germany behind. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 10: All Day to Soak Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring the Mirabell Gardens. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could enjoy this evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so after settling in to our lakeside lodging we'll enjoy a boat cruise past breathtaking villages and craggy mountain vistas. Spend a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before tonight's dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to visit the thought-provoking Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna, once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with an evening walking tour through historic Vienna before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in sophisticated Vienna with a trip to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Then we'll explore the city's rich Habsburg heritage by marveling at the massive art collection at the Kunsthistoriches Museum. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or to slow down and enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

This was my first Rick Steves tour, but definitely not my last! We saw breathtaking scenery, fun and vibrant cities, and historical sites that I've read about for years. I liked the way the tour was arranged with stays in cities alternated with visits to rural/rustic areas. I also liked the mix of time spent with tour guides and free time to explore on our own. Our main tour guide, Bryan, was wonderful - welcoming, fun and knowledgeable.

"My favorite "wow" moment was our day at Lake Hallstatt. It was a beautiful day spent at one of the most beautiful locations I have ever seen. The lake was sparkling clear, nestled in a mountain backdrop. "

This was the first time I ever left North America and at age 69 it was about time. This was our first Rick Steves tour and it definitely won’t be our last. The cities we visited were great. When we weren’t on the RS walking tours or on the bus we walked everywhere and got to know the cities we visited. Our tour guide Bryan Fellbusch was absolutely fantastic. He had a wealth of knowledge, shared a wealth of information with us and was very fun to be around. I may stalk him for our next tour.😊

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many it is hard to pick. Bryan, our tour guide, did take us to an organic family farm and since that impacts my everyday life it was fun and informative to see one up close and personal. The owners gave us a tour, did a cheese tasting and I got to pet cows.🐮 To experience this unexpectedly in a foreign country was a delightful event. "

Guide Hans and all of the fellow travelers made this trip the best. Hans was always the last to eat, making sure all were taken care of first. The hotels were comfortable and in great locations, the bus driver Eric was amazing, especially in small towns and in Switzerland, and the restaurants were perfect! We stayed well fed. We were also blessed with fantastic weather the whole trip. The itinerary left plenty of open time for extra experiences or rest, and all the included sights were lovely.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Almost every stop had a wow moment. Colognes cathedral and art museum, Berg eltz, Beilstein, black forest cake in the black forest, Neuschwanstein, beer and art in Munich, walking Salzburg at night, lake Hallstatt boat ride, art and palaces in Vienna. But the best wow moment was Switzerland. Everything was beautiful and serene. The lifts were fun to explore, the trails were well marked. The landscape and animals were relaxing, and the rivers and waterfalls are picturesque. Ready to go again."

It was long. I probably should have opted for seeing less, but then when planning, I'm always excited! I want to see it all! The tour was very good. People were wonderful. Tour guide, Hans was great. He took good care of all of us. Our bus driver, Eric was wonderful. No complaints other than on my part just not getting the amount of time on the bus and what we'd see.

The tour offered an exciting mix of both urban and rural environments, with culture, history, and adventure a daily experience. Our tour guide, Hans, was superb. I think he spoiled us a bit, and provided quirky bits of local experiences, like fresh Swiss cheese from a roadside vending machine, that we would not have uncovered on our own. Our group of fellow travelers was very compatible, offering opportunities for new friendships in addition to the European experience. Nice hotels, good food.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"While I love learning about culture and history, and experiencing the charm and vibe of different cities, the spectacular, natural beauty of the Alps made my heart sing. From the thrilling peak of the Schilthorn Piz Gloria, to the hike through the picturesque countryside, to the cows in the street, Murren, an exceedingly quaint Swiss village, was my favorite place. That said, I loved the whole tour!"

The entire trip was a wonderful experience. Our guide, Ruby, was fantastic and felt like a friend from day one. Octoberfest was quite the experience and fun even for this non-beer drinker! I've finally figured out that I tend to enjoy locations with natural beauty more than busy cities, so the Alps and Hallstatt were standouts. Nothing will ever compare to paragliding over the Lauterbrunnen Valley and experiencing a quiet, peaceful, bird's eye view of one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Favorite "WOW" moment

This tour was everything I expected from a RS tour! Our tour guide, Thomas, was so friendly & knowledgeable! A well packed tour which allowed us to get the most for our buck. Our tour guide Donald White was fantastic and funny. Couldn’t have asked for anything better. I never thought I would make as many wonderful friends. Definitely a bit physical but worth every step, even though they seem to have all been up steps lol

Magnificent. This is a rigorous, demanding tour, both in number of days and miles covered. However, it is exactly as advertised on the RS website. A few long bus days, but they provided welcome interludes with wonderful scenery. Lots of walking and exercise in clean mountain air. This tour has some great mid-day stops: Burg Eltz Castle, Mauthausen concentration camp, Franz Joseph’s summer villa. We had a wonderful, collegial group, led by Donald White.

"Big surprise—Murren. We enjoyed running into people from Best of Europe 14 Days and My Way Alpine Europe at the top of Schilthorn. However, the GAS tour is the only one of the three that actually stays in beautiful Murren. This rare three-night stay allows lots of free time for hiking. We were fortunate to see the annual parade of cows wearing floral headdresses celebrating their coming down from the high pastures. Also saw a cow helicoptered down to the valley. Big double take on that!"

I found many things/locations to exceed my expectations and a few that fell short. I believe that part of my perception in this matter were the length of bus travel vs. number of days stay in a couple of places. As an example, because of the late hour arrival of the bus in Baden Baden we were left with little time to use the spa and/or visit the casino.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely the Swiss alps. Such beauty and the small farms splayed into the tilted fields up the mountain made for a match to the vision in my head prior to arrival. "

This was my second tour but my first bus tour with Rick Steve’s. Since I had been to all three countries-Germany, Austria, and Switzerland before, the itinerary was different enough that I was optimistic I would get a different perspective on this trip. I was not disappointed. The comfortable bus, expert driver, tour guide Andrea and my other tour mates made this an unforgettable trip. The educational component from our bus talks, to the guides, plus the Rick Steve’s guide book-outstanding!

"So many impromptu “wow” moments- organized and not. I really enjoyed visiting the organic Jersey dairy family farm where a husband , wife and family members make cheese and cosmetics from the milk of their herd. Learning about the sustainable practices of raising their herd, and the cheese making process with free samples was a highlight of the trip. Cheese, soaps, and cosmetics were for sale right from the source. It was so random before a castle visit -that is why the ‘wow” factor for me."

Our capable tourguide, Andrea, and driver, Will were excellent leaders on our trip. Andrea was a font of knowledge on everything from history to politics, to cultural norms. She was always upbeat and positive and enjoyed plying us with delicious treats. We experienced 3 festivals along the way, which was a bonus. Our hotels ranged from clean and comfortable to quite upscale. Our group of travelers got along well and enjoyed each other’s company.

"The Lauterbrunnen Valley and Swiss Alps were stunning! I couldn’t get enough of the views of the alps, whether from the valley looking up, or from the alps across to the other side of the valley. Riding the gondola to the Schilthorn, hiking the trails and walking through the quaint towns of Murren and Gimmelwald, watching the paragliders, and listening to the cowbells all were part of the magic."

There were moments that felt hurried, and there was always more to do than time allotted for it. Food was okay, hotels were acceptable. This was my 3rd RS tour so expectations were very high; unfortunately, this tour fell a bit short due to the itinerary (suggest Cologne and Baden-Baden be replaced ), group dinners (improve quality of food), and the guide in Vienna that we had twice (hard to understand). We did like the places that we stopped at in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - although I think we liked the smaller cities the best. We did like the size of the tour group and the relationships that developed. It helped with our enjoyment of the trip. It was a beautifully executed tour. Everything went smoothly and the history and context from local guides and our tour leader added richness to the experience. The GAS tour is great, lots of territory--3 countries!-- and experiences. Castles, Alps, luges, and salt mines! It also involves substantial travel time on the bus to cover all of that territory. You do get a "taste" of various places, but not much time anywhere. For example, we did not arrive in BadenBaden until 5 pm, and we left early the next morning. Munich was only 1 cold, rainy day. We can’t say enough good things about this tour. It was our first time traveling with a group and we knew it had to be a RS tour. We definitely made the right choice. This was my second RS tour and I am already looking into which Rick Steve's will be next summer's vacation. They are a fabulous option for people who like information, like structure to their day, and can't really plan it all out themselves (or don't have the time too!) Rick's tours are well curated, the hotels are great, the included meals are great, and our guide BRYAN was dedicated, organized, smart and funny.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The visit to Mauthausen, a concentration camp in Austria, balanced out all the history, art and culture we were getting. It is important to get as well rounded and full a picture of a place as possible, not just the good food and art museums (which we did in plenty). I appreciate Rick's passion for giving travelers a well balanced picture of a place, through the itineraries he builds and the local guides he chooses. "

After our first, totally amazing, Rick Steves tour last year, our high expectations were most definitely met! The itinerary and activities were all very thoughtfully curated and extraordinarily well-planned. The 14 days were maximized to the fullest - I feel like we saw and did SO much, without it ever being too much or too tiring. Loved that it was a group of 20 - this size made things very manageable, and the group felt tighter / closer than on our previous, slightly larger Rick Steves tour.

This was our first RS guided tour and we had a blast. Everything was well organized and our guide, Mattias, was very helpful and patient with our questions! He was a good history teacher and gave us details on all locations as well as a guided tour. The local guides were also very thorough and passionate about what they do. The hotels were all charming and cute. The group meals were well planned to enjoy local specialties. We had a fun group, from teenagers to retirees. Now friends!

Our tour guide Thomas was very attentive, informative, and provided a lot of history on the different regions we visited. This was our first and certainly not our last Rick Steves tour! We really enjoyed the chance to explore on our own, and Thomas always had tips and suggestions to any questions we had.

"Hallstatt was truly remarkable tucked away in the Austrian Alps. We rented a boat and toured the lake which provided pure enjoyment of the beauty of this town. Everything about the tour was amazing. Our guide, Iris, was phenomenal. I always felt like I was getting the full experience of any location we were taken (including our rest stops!). Having taken trips to parts of Europe without a guide, I don't know that I will go again without doing a Rick Steves tour (or, at the very least, a Rick Steves book). This tour was the perfect combination of city and countryside, history and current culture, guidance and freedom.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to choose just one, but I think opening the door to the balcony in our hotel room in Murren is the image that I'll always remember and will constantly retell to anyone asking about this tour. I got turned around going up to the room, so I didn't realize we would be facing the beautiful mountains. When we set our bags down, I saw the door to the balcony and thought "Oh, neat!" and when I opened the doors, I gasped. We'd fall asleep looking out at the mountains each night."

This was our first Rick Steve's Tour. It met and exceeded our expectations. So much that we look forward to taking more Rick Steve's Tours in the near future. Everything went smoothly as it was well organized. The sites, countries and cities we toured were almost magical as they are very historical and famous. I wasn't expecting our tour guide to give us such interesting and informative information as much as she did. That was one of the best parts of this tour!

We had a very good travel group - one of the best things is that Rick Steve's attracts like-minded people who can quickly gel and get along and have a great time together, even during 'free' time. The GAS trip covered a lot of ground, literally and figuratively. The local guides are always great, Cologne was notable. We always enjoy the learning aspect of the tour - i.e. the Habsburg dynasty. Outstanding tour guide (Thomas). Great tour for first-timers to RS and the locations we visited. Excellent introduction for those who wish to return to the area. Tour was well organized and executed: Efficient use of time (for example, early arrival at major sites to avoid crowds); good on-site guides; consistency in quality of hotels and meals; nice balance between active (walking) and inactive (time-off, bus, meals); Right amount of descriptive detail provided for each site; adaptability.

Mattie made the tour seamless. The sights we saw were beyond comprehension - to say they were incredible is a vast understatement. There was a solid balance between tour time and ‘on our own’ time. I know it was beyond your control, but the people were amazing - we had lots of fun! The long bus rides were arduous- maybe some thought could be done in reducing that. The tour was well organized, Mattie was excellent as our guide, our city guides were very engaging and informative, the scenery was breath-taking, the cities like Cologne were unexpectedly historic and had precious artifacts in the various museums, and the group was great!

"Walking through Trummelbach Falls and experiencing the power of falls through all of the various vantage points. It was truly a multi sensory experience: hearing the mightiness of the falls, seeing the water tumble at the various viewpoints, and then finally seeing the falls tumble into the stream at its base. This tour was a whirlwind of extraordinary sites, cuisine, history and current events. It was organized in typical Rick Steves fashion with interesting venues, cozy hotels, and comfortable transportation. There were far too many WOW moments to list each, all expertly facilitated by one of the best guides in Rick's collection and special local guides. The new starting location, Cologne, was a slow start but the remaining of the tour were all sites where we wished for "one more day."

The tour was truly enjoyable. We are very glad we had the chance to come. The planned activities daily, when coupled with the free time was exactly the right mix. Our group was a mixture of people from across the US, some who were very knowledgeable travelers. We enjoyed getting to know them. Two weeks was a long time for me to be gone from my job, but it was an awesome two weeks.

This was our first Rick Steves trip and first organized tour and it exceeded our expectations. Our guide Mathius(Matty) was an excellent tour guide, the itinerary gave us a nice mix of cities and small villages, the members of the group got along great and we loved the free time to explore on our own or with others in the group. We really appreciated the experience and passion the local tour guides had for the history and culture of their country and town. We learned so much.

We waited 3 years for this trip!!! Signed up in 2019 for 2020, again in 2020 for 2021 and then in 2021 for 2022! It lived up to all that was promised! Our wonderful guide Andrea W. was amazing, knowledgeable, fun and inspiring! Our group of fellow travelers were wonderful and kind! Great itinerary, great fellow travelers, great tour guide. This was our 4th Rick Steves trip and our fellow travelers rivaled the ones we had on our Village Italy in 14 Days tour. Thank you! GAS was so special, enchanting and magical! Words can't express how refreshing and rejuvenating it was to travel after being an essential worker without a vacation for the past 3 years. This tour was very meaningful to me as my mother was a German immigrant who survived WW11, suffering PTSD; hence a lot of generational trauma resulted. It was so valuable to listen to different personal and political views and overlay that with my experience; the existence of duality. She is home.

"The Swiss Alps! Even though we were there in 2019 on the BOE14 tour, I think the Swiss Alps will always “Wow!” us! I described the Lauterbrunnen Valley as Yosemite on steroids during our 2019 trip. Staying in Murren was even more amazing. We had lovely, heavenly views from our hotel, and took some hikes in the breathtaking nature that surrounds the area. The cowbells are a treat! Our second RSE tour, the GAS itinerary and collection of tour mates were all fantastic. Our guide, Ruby, went above and beyond to make sure everyone was getting what they wanted out of experience. One noticeable difference between this and our first tour (2015) was the caliber of local guides, which in this instance really added to the overall quality and content of the tour. Hans/Trier, Michael/Munich, and Bridgette/Salzburg really brought those venues to life with their knowledge and stories.

"The tour's 3-nt stay in Mürren was the perfect stop between Germany's Mosel/BlackForest regions and what was to follow in Bavaria and Austria. "Being in Murren after a snowfall. We had been in Murren 2 weeks before and enjoyed glorious weather and great hiking. This time the snow accentuated the beauty of the mountains and created a new appreciation for the majesty of the area."

I really enjoyed traveling with this group of people and especially our guide, Hans. We saw a lot of interesting sights and had great experiences such as riding the luge in the Black Forest and touring the salt mine in Hallstadt.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I've traveled extensively in Europe, but not much in the Germanic countries. My favorite sight was Salzburg Cathedral, probably the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen. (I might have liked it especially because, although Baroque in style, it is slightly subdued and in better taste than the over-the-top examples we saw elsewhere.)"

Overall, the tour is a fantastic way to see a lot in a relatively short period of time. For me, it struck a great balance of quality and quantity. The only experiences I would recommend changing would be Trier and Baden Baden in favor of the Rhine Valley. Other than that, I loved every place the tour took us. The tour guide, Hans, was fantastic as well. He was fun, knowledgeable, and kept the group entertained. If you're looking to see a lot and have it organized for you, this is the way to go!

"Stopping to hang out with the cows in the Swiss Alps during an incredibly picturesque hike. The views were spectacular (it was impossible to take a bad picture) and hearing the cow bells (more cowbell) as we hiked with mountains in the backdrop was majestic. The whole experience was unexpected and truly incredible. I left with some incredible pictures, and memories for a lifetime."

We had a wonderful tour. Our guide Iris was just great, other tour members were friendly and fun, and the trip itinerary was great. We enjoyed the variety of this trip, visiting both larger cities as well as smaller countryside towns. We're already planning our next Rick Steves tour!

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour- a lot of variety and incredible beauty. I was glad that The concentration camp was included. It wouldn’t seem right to travel to this area and not acknowledge the atrocities that are part of the history. Our guide, Iris, was very knowledgeable and this was the most punctual group we’ve ever traveled with. That allows the whole trip to run smoothly.

"The Swiss Alps were even more incredible than I had hoped. Being able to stay in Murren as long as we did was a definite plus. Wandering along the paths from village to village, stopping to pick up fresh cheese and sausage - just perfect!"

It was wonderful! We had a great first time tour group experience. We had an amazing tour guide, Iris. She was so organized, knowledgeable & able to keep the entire group on task with ease. Walter, our bus driver was terrific, and was missed when he was finished with driving in Vienna. Iris and Walter were a treasured team for us! We loved the size of the group, and were blessed with great traveling companions.

"So many! Switzerland was a favorite for me. Murren was stunning, & I truly loved the surprise Alp horn & music before dinner. Lake Halstatt in Austria was beautiful! I loved the history of each place, both from Iris & the city guides. Michael in Munich was incredible! I could have listened to him all day! "

This was our fifth Rick Steves tour, so obviously we like them! This one seemed particularly well done, and we had a fantastic tour group. Iris was the perfect guide, and Walter drove the bus with skill and constant good humor. Loved the Switzerland portion enough that I think we’ll return for that tour. We spent time in Bacharach before the tour, and I highly recommend the area.

Our two week tour was wonderful. Iris Andre was the best guide you can have. She was very knowledgeable, organized, and had a great personality. Walter our driver was also great. He was very skilled and personable. The places we went were all very interesting and beautiful. I felt that there was a good balance of group activities and personal time to explore. We were also blessed to be traveling with a good group of folks. It was a great time from day one to day 14.

This was our first RS tour and it did not Disappoint. Though we had to switch from the main guide to the apprentice guide Thomas. He was outstanding. The hotels were very good especially in Murren and Vienna. More time was need in Baden Baden and the Black Forest and could have done without the local guide in Vienna. Lake Hallstatt was great but, I would not advertise the salt mine anymore that was to underwhelming.

"Even though it was very foggy most of the time were at the Schilthorn I will still say the time spent in the Alps. My first look at the mountains was OMG. Walking through the Trummelbach Falls was amazing seeing what nature can do with time. The most amazing thing I recall is the vibrancy of the colors. Going up in the gondolas and seeing how green was the grass. Walking through Grindlewald and the Red in the Roses and the Purple colors. were just so vibrant. Those are my WOW moments."

We thoroughly enjoyed all of the experiences on our tour and the friends & memories made along the way made this a great trip. As usual, the Rick Steves' guides are the best. Our primary guide Matty had to leave our tour and take over another tour, the apprentice guide Thomas took over and was fantastic.

It was a wonderful dream come true for me, even with a hiccup in the beginning and losing our main guide Matthias, we were left in great hands with Thomas Kreiseler. It was educational and cultural which is what I was looking for in the tour. There was a few things I didn't care for but it was all part of the experience. It was great to learn about Thomas' perspective on growing up and living in what was East Berlin and being able to teach him some of our American idioms.

"Seeing all of the beauty that this world has to offer and not being caught in the politics of it all. From the beauty of the Bavaria mountains, to the vibrant colors of flowers in Berner Overland, to the thundering water at Trummelbach Falls, the mountains in Switzerland, it was just so WOW seeing God's glory."

When To Go & Weather

Any time between May and October is a good time to take a Best of Germany, Austria & Switzerland tour. However, the months of May, June, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Summer, while the most crowded, has the best weather.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into the Cologne-Bonn airport (CGN) and out of Vienna (VIE) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Alternatively, you can fly into Frankfurt am Main (FRA) as this airport will have the most direct flights. A direct train from the Frankfurt airport to Cologne's central train station is about an hour. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves tour guidebook.
