Itinerary

Daily Activity Key

  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Trier for a "Welcome to Germany" meeting. Then we'll take an evening walk through Deutschland's oldest city, and get acquainted over dinner together. Sleep in Trier (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Burg Eltz Castle and Trier

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of the historic Roman and medieval core of Trier, marveling at its Porta Nigra gate, the most impressive Roman fortification in Germany. Then we'll drive along the hill-hugging vineyards and villages of the Mosel Valley, stopping for lunch together in the über-quaint village of Beilstein. Nearby, we'll stretch our legs with a walk and tour of mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence. We'll return to Trier for a free evening to explore more of this pedestrian-friendly town. Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 3: Baden-Baden Beckons

Our destination today is the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival we'll tour the elaborate casino and take an orientation stroll through the town. You'll have the rest of your day and evening free to "do the spa" (with or without your swimsuit), wander along the shaded riverside promenade, or hike into the surrounding hills. Sleep in Baden-Baden (1 night). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, giving some free time to linger in the past and order up a bratwurst or light German snack. Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in cliff-top Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views, have dinner together and sleep (3 nights). Bus: 6 hrs. Walking: moderate

Day 5: Hike in the Swiss Alps

The day is all yours. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain walk...or ride the gondola lift up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet, loiter in the thin air, and find your way back to Mürren...or take a narrow-gauge railway up the other side of the valley to Kleine Scheidegg, near the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. No bus. Walking: light to strenuous (your choice).

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

This morning we'll witness the roaring, thundering, crashing, splashing display of nature's awesome power in Trümmelbach — a series of subterranean waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet into darkness behind the valley's cliffs. You'll have the afternoon free to take a brisk mountain walk, or explore more of the Berner Oberland on your own before we regroup for dinner. Bus: ½ hr. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairytale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens and oompah-hospitality. Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together and sleep in Munich (2 nights). Bus: 7 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town and learn about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairytale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle. We'll hike back down to share a picnic lunch together before leaving Germany behind. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center, and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 4 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 10: All Day to Soak-Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring an ancient cemetery. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could sneak away to this evening. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty village of Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so upon arrival we'll enjoy a boat cruise (weather permitting) on the way to our inviting lakeside hotel. Spend a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before tonight's dinner together at our hotel. Sleep in Hallstatt (1 night). Boat: 1 hr. Bus: 2 hrs. Walking: light.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to tour the thought-provoking Mauthausen concentration camp, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna — once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with an evening tour through historic Vienna, including a visit to St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Your guide will discuss your best bets for dinner on your own. Sleep in Vienna (2 nights). Bus: 5 hrs. Walking: strenuous.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in sophicticated Vienna with a walking tour of the city's rich Habsburg heritage including a visit to the elegant Opera House (when available), impressive Hofburg Palace and its jewel-filled treasury. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by shuttle, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Itinerary specifics subject to change.

Activity Level

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Germany, Austria & Switzerland in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily...

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (several blocks possible) and up stairways to reach your hotel; then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Adjust to constant Alpine weather changes that can interfere with sightseeing.
  6. Handle steep walks and long castle stair climbs at Burg Eltz, Neuschwanstein, Trümmelbach Falls and others.

This was my first Rick Steve's tour, but not my first experience traveling with a group. I like group travel because you can pack more into the limited time you have in a country. We did, saw, and learned so much! Our tour director was wonderful, interesting and interested in us. We given guidance so we could explore on our own and pursue our own interests - more than other tours I have been on. Time spent on the bus was a little long, but we had good stops.

This was our first Rick Steve's Tour.......We enjoyed it very much! So many interesting history lessons ...... between our guide and the local guides we had a great experience. I liked information Tara shared during some of our bus time. Kept things interesting. The tour also had a good amount of our time to venture out after we had walks through the cities to familiarize ourselves with the layout. I feel like we really got a lot out of the tour. This was my sixth Rick Steves trip. The experience was, as usual, excellent. I had met Tara as an assistant to Steven on the Ireland tour in 2003, so it was fun to meet up with her again. If only you could have made the sun shine a bit more it would have been a perfect 10!

First of all, we cannot wait until we can plan our next Rick Steves tour. Once we got over the somewhat stressful experience of flying into Frankfurt and getting on the proper train to Trier, we had a great time. I am also very happy we came early to Trier to see the great museum. My husband and I are archeologists and enjoy seeking out those attractions, which are seriously downplayed in your books. Otherwise, we happily found good food and lodging before the tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I honestly loved hiking with Nica by Murren. Just the idea to be walking past cows looking around at the quaint buildings in that beautiful setting with a wonderful group of people was so delightful.Knowing that people have lived for generations tending their herds with such pride and care sort of filled my heart up. I never dreamed I would have an experience like that."

We saw and experienced a good cross-section of three different countries in 14 days. The Roman-German history of Trier, the Black Forest, the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps, German fairy-tale castles, and the imperial history and legacy of Vienna. Our guide was well-informed and personable. The bus transport was convenient and dependable, and our bus driver was great.

I was a bit apprehensive about doing a guided tour. I like to plan and do my own thing when I travel abroad. Most people's idea of a vacation is to lounge around on a beach, eat and shop a lot. I'm an active person who loves museums, hikes, culture, history. I was pleasantly surprised. The tour was very well thought out as far as places to visit and adding in variety of experiences. I would definitely do another Rick Steves tour. It's not for everyone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm a well travelled person, but Lauterbrunnen Valley and Murren are the most beautiful places I've ever seen in my life. Another highlight is the open air museum in Germany. The history of farming was fascinating. This epitomizes what I look for in an outing - experience the culture and history of a place in a fun and beautiful venue."

My husband and I chose the GAS tour because it included 3 nights in Murren. Overall, the tour had a good mix of large cities with smaller towns and villages, friendly and fun tour companions, good food, and good hotels. Our tour guide, Andrea, always kept us up to date with information (both cultural and historical) about each area we were visiting. Her sense of humor and occasional challenging questions enhanced our travels. Our second outstanding RS tour experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We knew that the Lauterbrunnen Valley area was gorgeous and worthy of more exploration. 3 nights in Murren gave us time to take the gondola to the top of the Schilthorn, hike the North Face Trail, explore the valley, and be thrilled by our "wow" moments of spectacular, clear sky views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau from the elevation of Murren. A close second was lovely Lake Hallstatt. Definitely wished for at least one more night there."

This was my honeymoon. My wife and I wanted to travel and see the world together. We both felt a Rick Steve's tour was the best way for us to do that without stressing about the little things. We never regretted our decision. Although we were in a group (which quickly became like an extended family)we had ample time alone to experience whatever we wanted to do. We felt we had the best of both worlds!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our WOW moment was in Murren Switzerland sitting high up in the swiss alps, the cows grazing on the side of the mountains. You can hear the cowbells ringing in the distance as we ate dinner! Every detail was well-organized, well timed, lots of fun and the succession was always perfect. Carlos was outstanding about helping us learn each tour member's names and to help us get to know each other better. The trip was very enjoyable. Our guide Carlos has a great command of English, and also of European history. We were able to learn a lot about the countries and cities we visited over the two weeks we were there. We really like the "buddy system" Rick has in his tours, and were fortunate to have had wonderful buddies! We did see a lot of cities (the plus), but there was a lot of time on the bus getting to all of them (the minus). See comment 16 below.

This tour broadened my horizons, which is one thing I expect from travel. The guide, Carlos Meissner, was excellent. He explained contemporary events and 20th/21st century European history very clearly and related what was happening to historical events. I could not ask for more. Laurel was knowledgeable and helpful I would rather have skipped the Neushcwanstein Castle and spent another dayin Munich. I never saw the movie, "Sound of Music", and this trip did not make me want to see it.

"Three moments: 1) Trier: I was not aware that the Roman empire broke up into 4 units, one with the capital at Trier. I had the impression that the Romans never conquered any of the Germanic areas. 2) Seeing the Alps from atop Schiltorn The Alps are a formidable barrier. 3) Listening to the Organ Recital in the Cathedral (in Trier?) This was fortuitous. We saw the poster and I knew I had to go. It was wonderful. The range of feeling in German music is surprising."

Three countries in 14 days with 28 people can be an intense experience and this tour was no exception. It was a great group that shared their time together in amazing fashion. It's pretty remarkable how many friendships can form over the course of the trip, but when everyone makes an effort to interact with everyone else, as I believe we pretty much did, it can be very rewarding. And yes, now I need a vacation after my vacation.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Much of the tour was a 'wow" moment, but hiking in the Alps, staying in Hallstatt, and luckily being in Munich for Octoberfest would be highlights. We all went over and sang "Happy Birthday" to the young man. It was a jovial Octoberfest moment. The other moment was at the concentration - work camp. It was profound and touched everyone on the tour. It is definitely a place everyone should visit."

From the start, our tour group meshed together. With that being said, everything that we experienced with them was fun. I didn't feel like an outsider and I believe that makes for 14 days with anyone better. Hans, was a wonderful guide and the local guides were open, informative and cheerful to be with us. It says a lot about a tour experience when you get home and can't stop sharing pictures and talking about it.

We had a very good group to tour with. Our son and daughter-in-law also were on the tour and experienced a Rick Steves' tour for the first time. The group interacted with them very well which they really enjoyed. Prior to going on the tour we noted to them that we would be visiting a lot with other tour group members and wanted them to do the same. Several tour members noted how much they enjoyed visiting and sharing meals with them. Hans even commented on this.

This was our second Rick Steves tour so we had an idea of what to expect and we were not surprised or disappointed. The people on the tour were open, friendly, and interesting. Holger, our tour guide, was friendly, professional, and very well organized yet permitted our group to develop its own personality and put our own marks on our shared experience. Very good, Never having been overseas before I was anxious about communicating with people where English was not the primary language. Our tour guide made it very easy. The lunches and dinners were important so a friendship could develop with everyone and it worked. The sites chosen for the tour were wonderful. I always felt safe which was very important to me. I know that I would never have known how to tour these 3 countries by myself so I was so very grateful for the tour setup.

This was my second Rick Steves' tour, the first being three weeks around Italy in the summer of 2004. I had a wonderful time, again, on this tour. Our guide was fantastic! And we had a great group of people on the tour. We covered a lot of ground in two weeks, so I felt I could have spent a few more days in some of the cities we visited. But overall, it was a fabulous tour and I saw everything I wanted to in the areas we visited.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite part of the tour was the time we spent in Switzerland. Murren was absolutely beautiful and the peaks across the valley were so dramatic, I could have stared at them all day. I was very happy we had three days there. My favorite "wow" moment was taking the gondola down from the Schilthorn. The clouds cleared and we could see the entirely valley below us. I have some of my best pictures from the trip on this gondola ride."

Our overall experience met and exceeded our expectations. We appreciated the detailed information sent to us ahead of time as it helped us prepare for the trip. Helpful to include the expected activity level so we could ensure we were prepared to be able to take full advantage of the hiking and walking tours. Also our tour guide [Nica] had planned a WONDERFUL surprise for us all - an alphorn and accordion concert! Nica also took those interested on a beautiful scenic hike. Could have stayed longer. The weather could have been better, but overall I loved this tour. All of our tour group were fun and everyone participated as much as possible. It was a good chance to practice my small German vocabulary and the people in all three countries were helpful and patient with us. As is usual in Europe, the wine and beer were a delight. (Although, the beer steins in Munich were a little on the large size.) I would certainly do this tour again sometime.

"There was more than one [INVALID] Vienna with its beautiful architecture, picture postcard Hallstatt and Murren. Probably Murren because I love being up in the mountains. The tour was too much territory over too short a time. By the time the tour was about over we felt worn out. I would not go on that type of tour again. Some Days we were up too early. Group meals were too late. We gathered at 7:30 pm, wouldn't eat until after 8:00, back to our rooms at 10:00, then often up early to hit the bus. Eating that late is no fun. Maisie was an incredible guide whose thoughtful and thorough introductions to each country enriched our overall experience.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The "wow" moments were many. Our time in the Alps at Mürren with our ride to the top of the Schilthorn, hike to Gimmelwald and experiencing the "cows coming home" in Lauterbrunnen would top the list. This tour is weak on "meaty" interesting and/or historic sights and information compared to our other RS tours. Too much fluffy stuff! Ditch: Hallstatt, the herding walk through Neuschwanstein Castle, luge run, and walk through a casino. We totally enjoyed our trip. Hotels were so well situated - it was very easy to explore every city and town we visited. All the restaurants in which we ate as a group went out of their way to make sure we experienced the best of local cuisine! Since we covered more miles that we had before on a Rick Steve's tour, there was more bus time than we had previously experienced, but it was time well spent. Daniela used a lot of that time to introduce us to local customs and current affairs.

We are dedicated Rick Steves travelers so this trip was a treat. While we were exhausted by the last day we were pleased with the overall experience. Our tour guide was amazing and made the trip seamless . The unique surprises that were included were great but typical of Rick's tours.

This was our 3rd Rick Steves tour and once again, we were pleased. We feel that we get good value for our time and money and we always enjoy meeting the type of people who take the tours. Everything went according to plan.

The GAS tour gave us a full plate of sights and adventures and kept us moving from early in the morning until later in the evening. Hans was a delightful guide who kept the trip running smoothly and he was able to handle any mini crises that came up. We thoroughly enjoyed his talks on the bus and he kept us smiling the entire time as we went "On the Road Again".

"Hatstatt and Murren were the high points of the trip for us. We would have enjoyed spending more time at these two locales. Others have felt similarly based on prior reviews and our own tour experience."

Our guide, Hans, made the very most of each day. He spent his day off taking us to places he believed we would enjoy and we made stops along the way ( on the bus) to offer us the most opportunities to see a wide range of sights along the way. He did a great job orienting us in each city or village . There was a good variety of city and rural stops and Hans gave us lessons on the history, music and other highlights before each stop. I enjoyed each hotel, always centrally located.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I anticipated that Murrn would be the highlight, and it most certainly was! Breathtaking views, very easy access to the cable cars and hikes of varying difficulty. Murren is a delightful village, charming homes and hotels and friendly people. We enjoyed the Hotel, great food and enjoyed the local entertainment of accordion and alpenhorn! Also enjoyed the Lauterbrunnen valley. I hope to visit in this area again some day."

The tour was well planned. A very busy tour, but we covered a lot of ground. Too little time in some places. Our group was great and our guide Nikka was wonderful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I would have to say our hike in the Alps. Although we had been in the alps before, this time seemed more relaxed and the weather was perfect for our hike. Hallstatt was absolutely beautiful. One of the places on my list to see and it didn't disappoint."

Nica did a great job making our tour FUN, well organized, on schedule...but still allowing free time when possible. We had an amazing group of happy, adventurous and friendly travelers who made the touring so enjoyable. Everyone was agreeable and flexible when weather concerns had us flip-flopping the plans. Rick Steves Tours does a terrific job of managing expectations, so that travelers know what is expected of them, in order to be good travelers. We would go again in a minute!

Favorite "WOW" moment

I was initially concerned about the amount of traveling and hotel changing that this tour takes, but I was pleasantly surprised that the process ran very smoothly. Very good work by our Guide, Nicole and Andre, our driver.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Favorite moment was experiencing the Swiss Alps. From the waterfalls to the scenic views, it was breath taking. From an historical perspective, the tour of Mauthausen was captivating and so sad. I have read a lot of accounts of the atrocities, but when you see the actual place these crimes were committed, it has a whole new meaning. I also learned of the involvement of the Austrian people."

The preparation materials offered were very helpful and the advise given was indeed accurate. Our travel companions were an outstanding group of individuals and couples. Our tour guide, Nicole, and bus driver, Andre, were superb. Out local guides were very knowledgeable and personable and we learned a lot. Our hotels were very comfortable as well as interesting and well located. The meals were really very good. The suggested free time activities were always very good. It was great!

The tour group was congenial and intelligent, everyone with a sense of humor and enthusiasm, welcoming and open. Some of the scheduling seemed odd, particularly where we stayed on Sundays. The hotels were fine (and Baden was great). I would have preferred bench seats on the bus since we spent lots of hours driving. The driver Andre was excellent.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Oh boy...was it the live music in the park in Baden while having dinner with our new friends? Was it the big altar room in Ludwig's castle with the storybook illustrations and the view of his dad's place...after hiking inside the castle and then down that hill? Was it the stunning and fun dinner in the Munich Bier Museum after seeing the glockenspiel earlier? Or swimming in Murren with the tall windows full of the view of the snow clad Alps? Mauthausen? All wow."

My husband surprised me with this trip for our 36th wedding anniversary. It was absolutely incredible. We would highly recommend it, and will definitely look into other Rick Steves tours for future travel. Our tour guide, Nica, and our travelling companions made it all the more fun. We loved each of the hotels we stayed in, perfect locations and all very clean and quaint. Perfect mix of arranged touring and free time. Loved every minute!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"As great as all of the arranged tours were, my very favorite day was a free day in Murren. Nica told us she was going to go on a hike and invited all of us to join her. Many did, and it was a hike that all of us said was our highlight. The weather was perfect, clear and crisp with snow on the mountains. We walked for several hours just enjoying the beauty of the Alps while listening to nothing more than the bells on the cows and watching hangliders soar into the valley below us. it was magical."

This was our 3rd Rick Steves tour, and we loved it. It was a nice mix of history, art, architecture, culture and beautiful scenery. It is a busy tour. We maxed out our free time with additional sightseeing. There is so much to see! We could have easily spent an extra day at each location. The scenery was stunning. The local guides were very informative. The cultures of each country are unique. Speaking German is not a requirement. English is spoken everywhere. Highly recommended!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My Wow moment would have to be the Swiss alps. They were so incredibly beautiful! We did a walk with our guide and about 16 additional tour members. I think we stopped every 10-15 minutes to take more pictures. Couldn't get enough of it. The second Wow moment would be Hallstatt. It was beautiful, and so peaceful. We never wanted to leave. We could sit by the lake and look at it all day. There were lots of other Wows... The Open-air museum, Burg Eltz, Mirabell gardens and the Porta Nigra."

"Very hard to [INVALID] one moment only, there were many including the quality of the guides, the Munich bier museum, Vienna, discovering the significance of Trier, and the power of Mauthausen. Our trip to Germany, Austria and Switzerland was amazing. It was the most organized, well run trip we've ever experienced. The members of the tour were fun, spirited and interested. Our guide, i have to say, is one of the reasons this all worked. She was such a perfect blend for our group and a sweetheart, so knowledgeable and kind hearted.

This was my 4th tour and I found each one exciting and such a great learning experience. I'm always impressed by the knowledge and excitement each tour guide brings to the tour. I've used Rick Steve's books on my own to travel and they are great but the tour with the guides and the city tours are so much more. I'll be looking to booking more tours in the future.

We had a wonderful time experiencing an area of Europe where we had never been. Our tour director made our experience stress free, educational and entertaining. We enjoyed the camaraderie of a small group of fellow travelers who quickly bonded and became like family. The scenery outside of the cities was beautiful beyond adequate description. The time spent in cities offered a wide variety of experiences.

Our first Rick Steves tour and our first time in Europe. After two years of digging into every possibility, and every nook and cranny, trying to plan "our own trip" by my wife, we decided to do the Rick Steves' tour and were glad we did. The thought of trying to "find our way" by ourselves and the idea of winding up in a bad area, gave credence to traveling with a group. Traveling with 25 others , and getting to know them, along with a knowledgable tour guide was the right choice.

This was our first RS tour and we are definitely considering doing more. The hotels in general were better than I had anticipated, the bus was roomy and comfortable, the tour members were a very congenial group, and Andrea, our leader, was outstanding. We also liked having some free time most days to relax and do things on our own, rather than having every moment scheduled.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I expected it would be the views from Murren and the top of the Shilthorn, but unfortunately the weather in the Swiss Alps was cool, rainy and foggy while we were there (will just have to go back to try to see it again!) We were very pleased with most everything about the tour. There was adequate time left each day to explore on our own after the guided tours earlier in the day. Most of the hotels were very comfortable and really centrally located. We did the city walks in the Rick Steves' book in most of the cities and found them to be very thorough for the most part. Bus was comfortable with a great driver, Henri.Would have liked more excursions with our guide when we were done with the city guides.

The overall tour experience was memorable. It had a combination of big cities, small towns, and peaceful hamlets. The history of these 3 countries was woven into our experiences while being able to enjoy the outstanding natural beauty of this region of the world. We were very fortunate to have sunny, warm weather for most of the trip. I think the visit to Mauthasen was a sobering and important place to see. Ironically, it was a dreary, drizzly day. How fitting...

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Actually, I had two "wow" moments. I just loved tranquility and majestic beauty of both Murren and Halstatt. It was so much fun to meander around after such a busy sightseeing schedule. As always, a great group of travelers. Everyone made the effort to be supportive, congenial, and upbeat. The stop in Baden was uneventful. Probably necessary for the driver, but we weren't a gambling group and not much to see. Trip was well planned and [INVALID]d. Henri , our driver, felt like part of our group. The stop in Mautheson was sobering, accentuated by cold rain. A sharp contrast to our merry journey and a reminder of all the lives that were violently interrupted during WWII

This tour was truly outstanding. It was a wonderful mixture of art, natural beauty, cute towns and cities, architecture and history. Liked the way the guides related all that we were seeing to the history of the area. The guides and our bus driver were all top-notch professionals who were friendly and very entertaining.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were two that stick out at opposite ends of the spectrum. The first was the view from our hotel balcony in Murren of the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau. The view changed throughout the day as the sun struck the mountains from different angles. It was majestic. The other was the visit to Mauthausen concentration camp. The unspeakable horror of the displays and accounts of atrocities, as well as, actually being in rooms where people were murdered was very powerful."

Again Rick Steve's tours exceed expectations. Our tour guide was wonderful, super friendly, good sense of humor and knew alot of the history. This trip was exactly as described & expected. We had an experienced, fun, & energetic guide (and a smart and capable intern). The bus was a fun respite and our bus driver was a gem. I loved the hotels, and in spite of the European heat-wave, our hoteliers did their best to make us "cool." That being said, all of our fellow travelers were "cool" travel buddies anyway!! Our hotel locations gave us access to the best attractions and we were close to transportation. How cool is that!

As we walked down to Burg Eltz and it suddenly appeared, I felt such a thrill. I knew that the rest of trip would be wonderful."

The tours, as always, are well planned out with the maximum group activity with an abundance of free time which I find very important on any trip. The use of the portable headsets during the walking tours helps with all the info trying to be relayed. The guides are always spot on and when the group is on time everything works like a well oiled machine. Being a tour bus driver in another life, Rick has done everything to make this style of travel the only way. Never change!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Beer, chocolate, and naked people. But seriously, having the weather clear for our three days in the Switzerland. Seeing the alps clear for three days, being able to hike down from the Schilthorn back to Murren, being able to hike multiple trails always having crystal clear 360 degree views of the alps at all times is something I will never forget. Oh and did I mention chocolate and beer!"

We loved this trip, and would do it again in a heartbeat! The sites, our guides, tour bus, meals and hotels were, for the most part, terrific (though the schedule seemed somewhat overly ambitious). The group we traveled with were fun-loving and adventurous, and I don't recall a single unpleasant encounter. We were blessed with great, though at times hot, weather. We'll definitely return to Europe, but I doubt it will be in August as the crowds were at times unbearable.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Swiss Alps were postcard pretty and beyond breathtaking. We hiked at least 15 miles, and enjoyed all every step, even those going uphill. Hotel Jungfrau in Murren was terrific. The food was good, the service personal and the entertainment delightful (and got the entire group on its feet laughing, singing and dancing behind two of the district's best entertainer-diplomats). The tour of the Mauthausen Memorial was sobering, but one that definitely should not be missed."

This tour was awesome. Our guides were great and everywhere we visited was so interesting and educational. The tour exceeded my expectations! Everything was well organized and choreographed (quiet times alternating with busy times). All of the guides were exceptional (our group was especially blessed to have "both" Donald and Carlos as our fearless leaders). The small group size was wonderful and the buddy system works great. There is a reason the Rick Steves' Company has been in existence as long as it has, and continues to be successful!

Experience was very positive. Great group of fellow travelers. Appreciated the variety in the things we saw and did. And the changing pace of the group and independent time. It would be nice to have free time for walking and hiking in the mornings when it is cooler and more enjoyable to be out and to be riding on the bus in the afternoon when it is so hot.

This is an excellent tour itinerary with a fabulous combination of group tours and independent time. "Trier was a pleasant surprise, steeped in history. Arriving on my first day, through the bustling city square, church bells ringing, was just magical. This tour exceeded our expectations. It was a good balance of structure & free time. The diversity of the group added to the pleasure of our trip. The local tour guides were personable, educated, & expert in their field. The shared meals were enjoyable. The one deficiency of the tour was the lack of air conditioning. It was quite hot & it was difficult to get a good night sleep in the heat. We extended our stay in Vienna but moved to the hotel across the street for the air conditioning.

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and all stops. The weather could not have been better, maybe a little cooler towards the end but we've always understood that's in someone else's hands. Both Donald and Carlos were extremely knowledgeable, well spoken and caring. Any questions from our group were always answered in an understandable manner. All hotel choices and places to eat were more than adequate. The only exception was Vienna as air conditioning was an absolute must and they were without.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The total time in Murren which was certainly accentuated by the wonderful weather we enjoyed. Those cable car rides were awesome. People who use that term, awesome, all of the time need to reset their minds and only use it after seeing and enjoying what we saw there. The concentration camp left us speechless for two or three hours. We, along with some of the other couples picked a Viennese Waltz concert to attend on our own. I must confess actually staying awake during the entire concert."

Overall, the experience was very good. This was an opportunity to be exposed to a large number of areas within Germany, Switzerland, and Austria without having to worry about acomodations, travel requirements, etc. As we traveled at the end of July and beginning of August, it would have been very helpful if there were hotels that actually had air conditioning. The overall tour experience was even better than we had projected. It's very difficult to put into words the enjoyment and thrills each day provided our group. Having never traveled to Europe, it was reassuring to have a wonderful guide along with a courteous and professional bus driver getting us to our various destinations safely and timely. The tour was packed with majestic sightseeing opportunities along with enough down time to relax and do our own adventuring.

This tour had a perfect pace and incredible variety. I enjoyed the the smaller towns like Trier, Murren, and Hallstatt especially when compared to bustling cities like Munich and Vienna. The variety for the activities was impressive as well. We stayed in great hotels and enjoyed fantastic food at every stop on and off the itinerary.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite "wow" moment was the scenery and peacefulness of the Alps in Switzerland. You have a spectacular view in every direction that at times seems more like a backdrop than actual landscape. This was our first Rick Steves Tour, and I'm not sure how it could have been better (except for the heat wave that struck in the middle of it). Maisie and Martin were superb - friendly, knowledgeable, and terrific conversationalists. The two of them made a great team, making sure we all knew some great options for our free time, interfacing with the local experts seamlessly and gathering us together for spontaneous (or so they seemed) small activities that add up to great memories.

We enjoyed every stop on the itinerary from the quaint villages to larger cities. The hotels were centrally located with spacious rooms. Maisie and Martin were "the best" tours guides with vast collective knowledge. They enhanced our trip daily from informative talks to impromptu lakeside picnic to room fans during heat wave. We had used Rick Steves tour books extensively on previous trips and now can recommend Rick Steves tours.

The tour was fabulous due to the wonderful places we visited, our great tour guides, Maisie and Martin, and the upbeat, positive group of people with whom we traveled. This was our second Rick Steves' Tour and both have been extremely well run. The local guides are all interesting and experts on their topics. The sun shone almost every day of the tour. If it had been a bit cooler, everything would have been perfect.

I have taken a few European tours with other companies, but the format of this one has been my favorite by far. It's clear to see where your money is going and the value that you're getting. I loved the smaller size of the tour group, the central location of the hotels and the knowledge of the guide. Everything was well planned and ever detail considered. What an excellent experience!

Favorite "WOW" moment

We saw a great deal. It was also quite exhausting. We learned this is not a style of travel we wish to repeat. We were with our group too much and did not have much time for personal experiences. We learned a lot about travel in Europe from our guides for which we are thankful. However we also visited during a heat wave. With no air conditioning in the hotels, we felt as though we did not get the rest needed to keep up the demanding schedule. It would have been good to tweak the schedule.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite moment was our last night in Switzerland. We were treated to local musicians playing the mountain horn and accordion. We were sitting outside. The evening was cool and comfortable. This was a great tour and exactly as I had wished. Just enough hand holding, lot of exposure to history and beauty and yet no overdoing, where the entire group moves together, giving me the independence to do what I want to do. The places visited were not always the ones you hear about in a conventional sense and yet rich in beauty and history making the experience exquisite. It allowed having a sense of mixing with nature, culture, tradition, habits, food and every aspect of the place.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I had quite a few. My biggest one was Murren and the Swiss Alps. Murren is a beautiful little village with greenery all around, one that we viewed as we took the gondola up and down. As much as I've been a Steves disciple, I was hesitant about an "organized" tour, but my wife wanted the experience. I am so glad she insisted. The tour made the travel convenient and allowed us to focus more on what we were seeing/learning. My only serious complaint is that I did not have enough time at Mathausen. My second Rick Steves tour, and one person in our group was on their 10th!! I like the approach, itineraries, activity level, food, tour director, and driver. We really valued having some personal time in most locations to explore the scenery, culture, restaurants, cafes, etc. that were most important to us. The orientation in each location was extremely helpful.

"The Swiss Alps were absolutely majestic! The Swiss Alps was the main reason we looked at this tour and it lived up to our expectations. We actually enjoyed Germany more than we expected - Black Forest, the countryside and quaint villages. We were also excited to see Hallstatt. It was a little more touristy than we expected, but still enjoyed the scenery and the village."

While only my 2nd Rick Steves tour, with many to come, I felt like no tour in the future is going to compare to this one based on 2 factors - our Tour Guide, Holger, and this particular group of tour members. The hours on the bus went unnoticed because of the great company and Holger's informative talks and "radio show" onboard - LOVED THIS TOUR!

The Rick Steve's trip to Germany, Switzerland and Austria exceeded our expectations. The group we were with was great. Everyone got along - we didn't have any primadonnas or jerks. Maisie, our tour guide was excellent. She had wonderful enthusiasm and brought her own perspective to many things that greatly enhanced the experience. Ashley, the tour assistant was a real trouper. We really liked the considerable amount of time to spend exploring on our own. Highly recommend this trip.

Overall experience very good. I would have liked to have spent more time in Munich and Vienna and perhaps skipped Baden Baden to do so. 7 hour bus ride too long to do in 1 day. Loved Black Forest stop. The trip up to Schilthorn was fabulous. Loved the singing and Alpenhorn. realize Rick's philosophy is about history, culture and learning, but to put it bluntly, and as informative as it was, I could have done without Mauthausen concentration camp. Too much, too intense for a vacation.

I did not care for Germany very much, the people there did not seem very welcoming to English speaking tourists. The tour went flawlessly due to excellent planning by the Rick Steves' staff and our guide, Andrea, who filled in with alternative events when the weather was not cooperative. We have been traveling internationally "the Rick Steves way" for decades. We thought it was about time to try one of his tours to make sure we were not missing anything. We were very glad we did so. So much so that I can honestly say we made the right decision. We made new friends, thoroughly enjoyed our guides (all the local guides and especially Andrea), and had a great time. Our third RS tour was great fun and an excellent intro to the Germanic lands of Europe. The group gelled quickly (much thanks to our guide, Hans)and proved adaptable to the unseasonably cool weather. Right mix of group vs time on our own. I want to emphasize the term "intro", because our time in Salzburg & Munich didn't leave us w/ adequate time to pursue much on our own. Here's an idea - give more time to those 2 cities & create a separate mini tour of Switzerland!

This was our first Rick Steves Tour and we loved it.Of course there is nothing you can do about the weather but our guide, Hans did such a great job giving us alternatives when the weather did not cooperate. He really went over and above the call of duty. One caution if you have never used trains in Europe--you have very little time to transfer trains, maybe 5-10 minutes, and if you don't know what platform to be on you will miss the train. We had a wonder group of folks to travel with and a guide willing to make last minute adjustments due to rain and snow. The mountains above Murren were completely socked in with fog making the gondola trip up not worth the cost--so we didn't. Instead, Hans took us on a hike in the valley. Other than the first 2 or 3 k feet, the Swiss Alps are the "Alleged Alps" to us. I personally think that Disney has bought the Alps and that they were closed for refurbishing, and therefore fogged in.

We took our group photo after the luge ride. Because of our small group of 17 there was time to do the luge ride twice. Other WOW moment was falling in love with Vienna. I liked Vienna better than Paris because the music is better, the art is as outstanding and the city is cleaner & a more manageable size"

This tour was absolutely amazing! Andrea and Maisie were both incredibly knowledgable and thoughtful about our activities. Both were also incredibly enthusiastic and clearly loved showing people "the way" things are done, where to eat, and activities in the area. This is a trip I will never forget.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I'm a nature person, so going through the Swiss Alps and Austria's Lake District both took my breath away. Cities are nice, but I prefer the great out doors."

This was our first guided tour and the experience far exceeded our expectations. We visited cities and hidden sites that we wouldn't have thought of seeing on our own. We also made several new friends with whom we plan to keep in touch. The bus trips were long at times but the rest stops were more than adequate. The historical perspectives shared by our guides while riding through the beautiful countrysides were interesting and thought-provoking and certainly helped pass the time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My most memorable experience was para-sailing in the Swiss Alps. It was something I had always wanted to do but never seemed to find the time (or courage). It was an exciting experience that I will never forget as long as I live."

Pre-Tour

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews, and articles, plus recommended books and movies in the "Plan" section.

Transportation

Prior to your tour departure, you will receive detailed directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as contact information for your first and last hotels in case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations.

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. Most tour members will arrange to fly into either Frankfurt or Luxembourg and out of Vienna ("multi-city" on flight booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay.

Frankfurt International Airport (Frankfurt am Main) is the main airport in Germany — 110 miles from Trier. If you fly into Frankfurt am Main, you will need to take a train from the airport to Trier Hauptbahnhof, a 3-4 hour journey. Frankfurt Hahn airport is a smaller airport located just 40 miles from Trier, but it is only serviced by low-cost airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz Air. It takes an hour to go by bus from this airport to Trier. See www.flibco.com/hahn/morbach.htm for more information.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Trier before your tour begins, use the Rick Steves Germany guidebook to get oriented, try out a few words of German, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise (consider renting a bike and pedaling along the river; details in the guidebook or from any tourist office).

Here are some suggestions for sightseeing in Trier that we will not be doing as a group (see the guidebook for details): Archaeological Museum; Mosel boat cruise; Bishop's Museum, Amphitheater. Remember, we will tour nearby Burg Eltz Castle as a group.

Packing

While it is important to pack light, there are a few items we'd like you to consider including when packing for this tour. There are great opportunities to hike during our stays in Mürren and the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland (weather permitting). While hiking boots are not necessary, we recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction. In addition, the tour also visits Baden-Baden, an area known for its hot springs, and swimsuits are optional at some of the baths so you may wish to pack a swimsuit and perhaps a lightweight microfiber towel.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.
