Itinerary

Daily Activity Key
  • Light = 2–4 miles of mostly level walking throughout the day.
  • Moderate = 2–6 miles walking throughout the day with some hills and stairs.
  • Strenuous = 2–8 miles of walking throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain.

Day 1: Welcome to Bavaria

We'll meet at 3 p.m. at our hotel in Munich for a "Welcome to Bavaria" meeting. After an orientation walk through our neighborhood, we'll get introduced to Munich's efficient public transportation system. This evening we'll enjoy a hearty dinner together. Sleep in Munich (2 nights). No bus. Walking: light.

Day 2: Marvelous Munich

This morning we'll join a local guide for a fascinating walk through Munich's Old Town, weaving together the history and traditions of Munich and Bavaria. We'll visit the legendary Hofbräuhaus beerhall and explore the centuries-old Viktualienmarkt, famous for traditional crafts and gourmet food stalls — of course we'll taste some specialties along the way. The rest of the day is yours to explore the English Garden, take in a museum, or — on winter tours — simply savor the surrounding Gemütlichkeit (comfy-coziness) of Munich's Christmas markets. Tonight, you'll be free to perfect your prost with new friends at one of Munich's historic beerhalls, where you can hoist a liter-sized mug of beer, and a pretzel as big as your head. No Bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 3: Fairy-tale Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

Get your cameras ready! This morning we'll drive through the picturesque villages and lush rolling hills of Bavaria. When we arrive at the foothills of the Alps, we'll hike uphill to tour "Mad" King Ludwig's fantasy that inspired Disney: Neuschwanstein Castle. Afterwards, we'll share a picnic lunch together and visit Germany's greatest Rococo-style church, the Wieskirche. Then, we're off to Austria and charming Salzburg, the city of splendid gardens, Baroque churches, and one of Europe's largest medieval fortresses. We'll settle into our quaint hotel and share dinner together. Sleep in Salzburg (2 nights). Bus: 4 hours. Walking: Strenuous.

Day 4: Splendid Salzburg

Salzburg is the perfect town for a walking tour, and together with our local expert, that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs that line Getreidegasse, through picturesque gardens and going for Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral. We'll then drop into a cooking school, for a lesson on how to make the amazing, appley Austrian treat Apfelstrudel. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or (on winter tours) wandering through the Christmas markets. Your free evening is perfect for a concert featuring the work of Salzburg's favorite son: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 5: Lovely Lakes and Hallstatt

This morning we'll make our way to the postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. On our way, we'll skip like stones across the pristine waters of Austria's Salzkammergut lakes district on a boat cruise enjoying the breathtaking lakeside villages and craggy mountain vistas. This afternoon we'll settle into our cozy lakeside lodging, where you'll be free to commune with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines. This evening we'll gather together to learn about the history and culture of Schnapps, with tastings of course. Zum wohl! Tonight we'll share dinner together. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt (1 night). Bus: 2 hours. Walking: light.

Day 6: Melk Abbey, the Danube and Vienna

Today we'll take another scenic drive to the Danube Valley, where we'll tour the artistic treasures and Baroque wonders of the Benedictine abbey at Melk. Then we'll cruise Austria's prettiest stretch of the Danube River and check if it really is blue (season permitting). We'll finish our day in the one-time capital of a powerful empire — and our tour's grand finale — extravagant, opulent Vienna. After checking into our hotel we'll take a walk, orienting you to historic Vienna, including St. Stephen's Cathedral. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy dinner on your own. Bus: 4 hours. Walking: moderate.

Day 7: Historic and Royal Vienna

This morning we'll be introduced (figuratively, curtsies not required) to the family who created one of Europe's most dynamic empires: the Habsburgs. We'll join our local guide for a walking tour that takes us into their residence: the Hofburg Palace, including their Imperial Apartments and Treasury. Our tour will continue with a behind-the-scenes peek inside Vienna's famous opera house (when available). Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or slow down to enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost! No bus. Walking: moderate.

Day 8: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus, or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna in 8 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Handle steep walks and long castle stair climbs at Neuschwanstein and other locations.

I've had a Christmas Market tour on my radar for several years. Everything came together this year to make "this the year". We had taken one of Rick's tours last year and had seen his videos of Christmas so we trusted that this tour would continue with his high standards. We were not disappointed and our trip helped provide many memories that we'll have the rest of our lives.

It was very well organized and Hans did a great job explaining things. This was not my first tour and realized that we needed to come a few days early I order to adjust to the time change and be able to see Munich. Enjoyed the activities the tour provided along with the free time.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have high expectations, when it comes to a tour. So it is difficult to name a wow moment when it all was enjoyable. However, the dinner and concert in Salzburg was the biggest surprise of the trip. I had thought it would be in a regular restuaurant followed by a concert on a small stage. I was Wowed by the spectacular room, high end service, the quality of the musicians. The evening was was so much more than my expectations."

Really enjoyed the entire tour very much. Hans did a great job leading the tour and explaining the history and general information regarding the places we visited. Nice group of people to travel with and plenty of space to spread out when traveling from city to city.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hard to say as each city had a "wow" moment of its own. Its a challenge to pick between the Christmas markets in Munich, the Mozart concert in Salzburg, the winter snow in Hallstatt, or the museums in Vienna. Each day was unique and special."

The tour was fantastic! We were able to get a good feel for each city because of the well planned itinerary and activities, the nice hotels in convenient locations, and the group meals of local cuisine. Our tour guide, Hans, was so pleasant and knowledgeable and he added little extras that made the trip so special. Visiting during the Christmas season was so festive but I think going anytime would be wonderful! This was my first Rick Steves Tour and I would definitely do one again!

This was my fourth RS tour and lived up to the high expectations set by previous tours! Hans was a terrific guide and our group was fantastic. The extras that Hans included made a wonderful trip that much better. From the apple strudel making to the Third Man Museum visit, the extra activities really enhanced the overall experience. The local guides were great, especially Gerhard in Vienna. Cannot recommend this tour enough!

"I had so many wow moments it's hard to pick my favorite! If i had to narrow it down, I'd say the first group night in Munich. We're doing the walking tour, going through the Marienplatz Christmas Market, there are Christmas carols being performed, and then it starts to snow. Absolutely magical!"

My second recent trip with Rick Steves and another splendid itinerary. Hotels comfortable and clean and really well located to the core of each place that we visited. Wonderful, hearty breakfasts with plenty of variation. Some nice evening meals and lunches. This trip was a triple whammy, great locations, a super group and a great way to launch into the Christmas season. Nicely paced, with a chance to visit places in free time. I hoped I would enjoy this trip & it exceeded my expectations!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Well there were a few...the evening tour of Munich was a bonus & surreal - we walked into the square there was singing from the town hall, the place was crowded with visitors at the Christmas markets & it started to snow...it was like being in a movie. The Mozart dinner concert in Salzburg was superb. Melk Abbey was a nice surprise & well worth seeing. Neuschwanstein Castle - incredible especially in the snow, the view from the bridge being worth the extra hike. Strudel making class was fun!"

This was my first Rick Steves trip so I was not sure what to expect. I was prepared to carry bags and have hotels that were moderate but each hotel was actually better than expected. I expected that we would hit the big city sites as listed, but special things like the brewery tour and touring Melk that were not on our list were a couple of highlights for me. I cope with motion sickness but having a big bus with plenty of room allowed me to be comfortable on the road trip portion.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Lots - but probably Hallstatt if I had to choose just one. Beautiful town in a gorgeous location - had never heard of it before and we were there on a particularly beautiful day after a snow - picture perfect. Plus we learned a lot of the history of the location which was fascinating. But I also loved Salzburg - it lived up to my expectations! And singing Silent Night in the chapel was special this time of year."

Very good tour with a couple of great additions. Overall the pace was fine, it was well organized, and had some extradinary moments. The skill of the tour guide in shifting/adding things was especially valuable. Touring at Christmas time had some challenges (some rain and often quite cold) but was more than worth it as the cities at night are are lit up and crowded with both locals and tourists.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"OK, I'm going to give you two as I can't choose between them. We had a clear and calm day in Hallstatt and the views of the mountains reflecting on the lake with the beautiful Town was unforgettable. But it's a tie with the chance to learn about immediate post-WW II Vienna from our local guide through his own museum based on the movie the Third Man. For me, it was more interesting than all the Habsburg palaces. (I think it was an addition due to the unavailability of the Opera House.)"

This winter tour was just what I had hoped for, and left me wanting a bit more, which I consider a good thing! Rolinka worked hard to make sure we all had a good time, and arranged many extras to make the trip even better. Even the weather cooperated, giving us snow without problems to make Hallstatt even more magical one day, then clear skys the next to appreciate the mountains surrounding Hallstatt. This tour in December is a good way to get a taste of Christmas Markets in Austria, what fun!

While these cities are wonderful to explore during warmer weather, there is nothing like seeing them "dressed up" for Christmas. Christmas markets, seasonal musical venues, the never-ending Christmas trees and lighting, and Gluhwein galore were just a few things presenting to complement the historical beauty of each city. Far exceeding my expectations, this was an over-the-top vacation experience.

Amazing and beautiful! So glad I/we did the 8 day November Tour. The palaces and castles were wonderful with the history! The snow added an extra sense of beauty and splendor to the trip! The bus drivers were OK - good "drivers." The 2nd better than the first from Munich.- not as good as John w/Brian Hay on our May trip to Scotland. They were not the best w/personality - especially, the Munich driver. Oh Well - at least we reached destinations safely!

We had never taken a tour before and were a bit skeptical. This tour had a balance between tour time and free time which was great as we like to explore on our own. Each day had a bit of surprise in it, such as the bus ride short cut, cooking class in Salzburg, side trips to view the gazebo from the "Sound of Music" movie. The "get acquainted" tours of each city were helpful in learning to navigate. The Christmas Markets were a fun bonus. Arriving a day early gave us time to explore.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"HALLSTATT definitely. I have never been to a more beautiful and untouched village. It had rained/snowed the day we arrived and it was overcast but when we awoke in the morning the sun was rising over the mountains, the sky was a crisp blue and the views were magnificent!"

Absolutely loved this tour. The Christmas markets were even better than I'd imagined. Made great memories of lebucken, gluhwein, apple streudel, ... I couldn't believe how many amazing Christmas decorations there were everywhere. My favorite was Hallstadt, then Salzburg, then Munich, then Vienna. Great tour members and a wonderful guide.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hallstadt in the snow. I will NEVER FORGET that - what a magical sight! The first day the snow came down in big, fluffy flakes (and I live where there isn't any snow). I know we couldn't "see well" on the boat tour because of the snow falling, but that made it mysterious and I loved it - especially with a steaming mug of gluhwein in my hand. And the next day, the sun came out and the snow was sparkling white and the town was SO BEAUTIFUL... I would have loved to stay longer. :) Another time!"

Rolinka was amazing! We had a great group of people who started out as strangers but ended up friends. The hotels were great, except the hotel in Munich did NOT have any English tv channels. As an American tourist, I like to stay informed of world events. CNN International or BBC World would have been nice. Hotel in Hallstatt was exceptional and the use of headphones during our walking tours was fabulous! We could wander off a bit for a picture and still hear everything our guide was saying!

What is not to love about this trip EXCEPT that it was over too soon. Bavaria has a unique and different feel and Rolinka was great at giving us the experience of these two fantastic countries. The other tour members were wonderful and fun people. Because of this tour I WILL go back for a longer period of time.

This was our first time on a Rick Steves Tour and we would absolutely do it again. Rolinka was fantastic - very organized and always thinking about the best opportunities for our group. A few things: 1. We felt there was not enough unstructured time in the cities we visited. We could have used maybe 1 more block of unstructured time to explore specific things we were interested in. 2. The group meal food was ok not great, but the social opportunity was nice.

It was lots of fun visiting those cities. I learned a lot about the culture, history and food. Our tour leader Andrea was great and she has so much energy and just fun to hang around. We are also very lucky that overall the weather was quite cooperating. As usual, all of the local guides are very knowledgeable. The hotels are much better than the one I stayed in Rome before. Only one minor negative is that it seems that we have less time to visit each city, probably due to travel arrangement.

We spend a good deal of time out and about looking at buildings, churches and palaces. These buildings are really the basis of the importance of these major German and Austian cities. Churches were major community and political centers and represent a focus of government finances and energy. The Catholic Church was the first governing body in this area after the fall of Rome. The Churches are also major centers of artistic endeavor. Palaces of ruling families were a secondary focus.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The small city of Hallstadt, surrounded by mountains and anchored by the lake. The scenery was beautiful and we decided that the 2.90 euro gluhwein at the Lookout was the best deal around and it came with incredible surroundings. It was easy to find our way around to restaurants and shops. I also enjoyed the church that was twice as wide as it was deep.."

This was our first tour and honestly we did not know what to expect. It exceeded all of our expectations. The hotels were beautiful and the trip was broken up into manageable segments that gave us time to rest, sight see on our own and truly enjoy group activities. Our group was very dynamic and friendly which made it easy to "mix it up" by interacting with different people. We loved how every hotel had breakfast as well!

This was our first Rick Steves tour and I was quite impressed. I liked that we were given lots of free time to explore areas on our own and that we didn't his all the usual American tourist havens. I also liked the lack of pressure to shop or spend lots of money. The hotels were all very good to outstanding (rooms, breakfasts, services). Our tour guide was informative, witty, and made the the experience personally rewarding.

Tour was very well organized, and our guide, Andrea, kept us together, on time, and for the most part having fun. Everyone cooperated to be on time, stay together, etc. so no time was lost waiting for people or dealing with complaints. We covered everything mentioned in the promotional materials. The first activity, the nighttime guided walk, was disappointing because the guide seemed to trivialize the background history. It got better after that, with some stand-out guides.

The Rick Steve's Best of Munich, Salzburg & Vienna 8 Day Tour was incredible! It exceeded all of my expectations. I believe I saw the best of each of these beautiful cities plus gorgeous Hallstatt, Austria. The itinerary was very busy but we had free time each day to do as we liked. I had been looking forward to a trip back to Germany for 53 years. My dad was stationed there when I was a child, and my dream was to go back someday. I researched tours for many years and finally decided this one would be best. It was wonderful. I was afraid the 8 days would be too short, but the pace, both busy and relaxing, was perfect and the length of time ideal. Memories were rekindled and new ones made. The brotchen, the flowers, the villages, the countryside. Lovely, lovely.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I loved the brotchen, I loved Halstatt, I loved the red geraniums...I could go on and on. But the wow moment for me was probably the unexpected Strudel making class in Salzburg. The cooking instructor was cheerful and expert, the little cave cooking school was charming, the goulash lunch was scrumptious, and it was just plain fun. And the strudel turned out--pretty AND tasty. Thank you for this unexpected gem of an experience!"

I loved knowing what we would be doing each day; the choices of activities were really helpful to give us a flavor of these cities. And when I was too pooped to "go-go-go" any more, it was great to have the choice to be on my own and relax in the locale. Getting to know our fellow travelers was fun! We all brought our own spin and experiences to the table, and I think we all learned from each other. People are sweet.

"Visiting the Third Man Museum in Vienna was a treasure for me. Seeing the photographs and artifacts of life in Vienna during and after WWII was so moving and thought-provoking. This is a little-known museum; I never heard of it, and might not have gone had I just heard about it. But I am SO glad that it was part of our itinerary. IMO, you should keep this as a standard part of a Vienna tour. Anyone can go visit the Vienna Opera House; it's a special tour that takes you to a jewel like this."

My wife and I couldn't have been happier with this tour! I was stationed in Germany in the U.S Army from 2001-2008. I was excited to come back to the country that I spent so long in, but more excited for my wife, who'd never been to Europe, see the wonders that it possesses. Her first experience was phenomenal, to say the least, and my expectations of showing us the culture I may have missed out on were fulfilled. This tour, my first actual tour with a guide, was absolutely phenomenal!

This was our first Rick Steves Tour, and after not traveling for 22 years, we were unsure of what to expect. After the initial booking, I was immediately put at ease. The communication, travel tips, and to-do lists that RS Tours provide leave nothing to chance. If one follows them, one can be assured of a great trip! Especially helpful was the pre-trip info: what to see before the tour starts, how to get from the airport to the first hotel, etc. The tour itself was exemplary.

Having been on other Rick Steves tours, I was disappointed in this tour. My understanding of German culture and history was not expanded. I have no sense of Munich - not enough time spent there. Too much time to go and visit Neuschwannstein, not a very interesting castle with a terrible guide. It is so hard to summarize in the space given. But the tour delivered what I expected, but more so. Central hotels allowed us access to the city without all of the bus tourists. That was especially true in Salzburg. Local information from the guide about restaurants and sites allowed me to hone in on what I most wanted to see and do. I traveled solo, but fellow tour members were always inviting me to go to restaurants or other places with them. Overall, a very positive experience.

My family (wife & son) had a terrific time! We arrived several days early, and stayed a week afterward. Daniela is a terrific tour guide! This was our third RS tour - we really relate to Rick's "Europe through the back door" & "no grumps" philosophy. I recommend the Munich neighborhood walk include a walk-in at St. Peters to see the jeweled martyr (Die heilige Munditia). Our family skipped the apple strudel activity in Salzburg - too much to see in too little time there!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My "Wow" moment was the Augustiner Braustubl beer garden in Salzburg (on solo walk during free-time, referenced in Rick's show & guidebook). I visited many beer gardens, but this was hands-down the best!!! I enjoy experiencing "Europe through the back door", and this was a classic moment... feasting on steckerfish (fish on a stick) & eine halbe helles (half liter brewsky), joining locals at a table under the Chestnut trees, and talked politics (primarily getting their perspective of Trump)."

I had traveled to Munich and the Lutherland about 8 years ago on a religious tour following Martin Luther's life. At that time I did not really enjoy Bavaria the way I did on this Rick Steve's tour. The guide, Daniella and the tour group were wonderful and made the experience much more lively and fun. I had Vienna on my bucket list for many years and really enjoyed that part of the trip also. I only wish the trip was longer, but then I can never seem to get enough of a Rick Steve's tour.

The RS tour was a little more than I usually spend (I usually plan trips solo) but the value I got for the money was well worth it: the history and background from the very knowledgeable Daniela, the stops I wouldn't have known to make on my own, the great hotels and breakfasts, and the lovely people on our tour. I could have done without singing Silent Night together but the others seemed to enjoy it. Same with Sound of Music...

We were completely satisfied with our tour, and when we decide to take another tour, I'm sure we will try to go with a Rick Steves Tour again. The mix of guided activities to free time was ideal, allowing us the opportunity to get to know our fellow tour members better while also giving us the time to explore what we wanted to on our own. On top of the activities, Torben gave us perspective with an in-depth and fascinating look at the remarkable history behind these areas.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's difficult to pick a single "wow' moment. The Mozart dinner concert was certainly fabulous and deserves a "wow." Getting hands-on to make an apple streudel while enjoying goulash soup in such a quaint business was a fun, unexpected surprise. Seeing Neuschwanstein rise out of the mist from the bridge on such a rainy day was thrilling. Everything about Hallstatt[INVALID]from the fabulous motel to the bone chapel to the rented boat ride we took to the walk around town[INVALID]was certainly a "wow.""

Good tour with a great group of travellers. Daniella did good job of getting us all on the same page right away. Her calling us all together in a circle the first morning, and asking each of us to go around the circle and repeat the first names of all 29 was very good. Fabian was a fantastic and went above and beyond to make the trip special for everyone. He arranged the best room available for my wife and me on our anniversary and had a bottle of champagne and chocolates waiting for us in the room. The tour had just the right amount of sightseeing, free time, and culture. My two 17-year old granddaughters were with me on the tour and they absolutely loved it. This tour was fantastic, scenic and a good change of pace after having spent 17 days doing Venice, Florence, Rome and Paris on two prior tours. This was my first overseas trip. The experience was beyond my expectations. I was enjoying myself the minute I arrived in Munich! The four days alone before the tour were fearless and explorative. December proved to be a great time to travel to Bavaria and Austria; the crisp air and the festivities of the holiday season, including the many Christmas markets, made this an extra special trip. From the minute we met with our group and our wonderful guide, Daniela, we knew we were going to have an outstanding time. Daniela was the epitome of what we have come to expect from a Rick Steves guide. She was warm, knowledgeable, professional, and in every way a delight to be around. What a wonderful time to visit Germany and Austria! We saw beautiful sights, enjoyed learning more about the history of the area, and ate delicious food. The trip exceeded my expectations in every way.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The beauty of Hallstatt in the winter and the Mozart dinner concert stand out but I will never forget the strudel-making morning. On a serious note, learning the history and seeing the places in Munich where the Nazi party started was very sobering."

This was our first RS tour and it exceeded our high hopes. Daniela, a Munich native, was the perfect guide and gave us not only background history but lots of surprises as well. Our fellow travelers were also a great group and even the weather cooperated: cold but no rain! We enjoyed all of the historical venues and the Christmas markets were an added bonus. We are sold and plan to take another RS tour next year!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"There were so many "wows" but perhaps my favorite was opening our hotel window and looking down at the lit Christmas tree in the town center in Hallstatt. What a storybook village! Singing "Silent Night" in Oberndorf and hearing about the harsh conditions that led to its composition was another high point. It was both fun and inspiring to meet a brewer, a cheese maker and a baker (who taught us all to make Apfel Strudel) and we all shared their infectious enthusiasm for their crafts."

This was an amazing tour. My first Rick Steves' experience and worth every minute. The hotels were great, all the guides (both Daniela and our city guides) were phenomenal. There was a nice amount of free time for site seeing on my own, and some added spontaneity occurred when Daniela added some really excellent additional stops--brewery tour, strudel cooking class. The entire tour was outstanding.

"The festive atmosphere of all the cities this time of year was well worth it. Everything was so beautiful, and to be bundled up in warm clothes and wandering around the christmas decorations and markets was amazing. Salzburg was my favorite stop, but all of the cities were incredible."

This tour was everything I imagined it would be and more. Daniela was a fabulous tour guide who balanced bus free-time perfectly with quiet time. I appreciated the stories Daniela shared with us regarding her heritage and the Christmas Holiday. We also had a wonderful bus driver in Hilde and she was fun to spend time with as well. Daniela was spectacular in her activity planning. The studel making class really added to the tour and the Mozart dinner concert was a highlight.

The tour was an effective combination of city-based sights and backdoor venues, which enlivened the experience and made every day a pleasure. In addition, the mix of expertly-guided tours, visits to the must-see sights in each location, and moderately offbeat experiences created momentum and diversity that I genuinely enjoyed. The limited tour geography, efficient logistics, and ample free time produced a sense of manageability and balance.

"It's somewhat out of character, but my first sight of Munich's Marienplatz Christmas market was a genuine "wow" moment. What a fantastic tour! Being in Europe during the holiday season was magical. The cities we visited were easy to navigate, charming, full of history and so festive. I'm so glad you offered this tour during the winter. It is one I won't forget!

Travel truly is broadening. I expected to experience cultural differences on our tour, but I was struck by how alike we Americans and our German/Austrian hosts are. Perhaps if more people traveled, we wouldn't be so xenophobic or ready to fall under the sway of someone who claims to have all the solutions to our national problems.

As a former ski bum, it was a dream come true to see the Alps and then to ride the gondola to the top of Zwolferhorn Seilban. ""WOW" isn't a vista, a museum, a Christmas Market or a Mozart concert. It's a disparate group of individuals coming together as a family; recognizing that they care more for each other than the next view or edifice. Our cohesion of personalities transformed on "introduction" night. Three facts presented - one a lie. We responded, "you didn't, that's amazing", as did tongue-in-cheek claims of "you must be lying". Laughter and teasing expanded and, without recognizing the moment, we became family."

We usually just grab a Rick Steves' book and head out on our own, but this year we were pressed for time (and tours were on sale by then, it was so late) so decided to let RS plan our days, find our hotels, and point out what was worth seeing. We enjoyed our trip very much and saw things we likely would have missed by taking a train. That is, we did a lot of van riding, which was fine (tho it was actually a large coach bus--making us feel like rock stars).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The glorious excess of gold spilling from every possible surface in palaces and churches in Vienna was delightful for its excess and exuberance. Although our most excellent local guide saw it as an excess of church power (in the churches only, obviously) I saw it as a gift to the people who perhaps needed a bit of beauty in their lives. But then, artists need patrons, right? And there was plenty of work for them in that beautiful city."

I was glad to see three cities, in two countries, that I had never visited before. I think this tour gave me a good overview of Germany and Austria. Everything about the tour was perfect. The structure of every single day in each location was excellent for three main reasons: You were given an overall tour of the city center, which gave you plenty of ideas of what you'd want to explore later on your own. The museums, activities, and meals included with the trip relieved you of having to plan everything on your own. The free time built into the tour allowed you an immense amount of flexibility to create your own European experience.

This was my first Rick Steves' tour, and it exceeded expectations. I'd never participated in a group tour before. The principle reason for booking a tour rather than strike out on our own was that the decisions on hotels and transportation was taken care of. My husband & I had been to Europe several times previously and know how difficult it can be to navigate, especially in the larger towns and cities. I learned so much on this tour and didn't feel rushed going from town to town.

Having used Rick's hotels, rail pass service and general guidance on two previous trips, knew this would be excellent. It was better waaaaaaay beyond my expectations ! Travel group with the "Rick Steve's attitude" was a joy - no grumps, "if it's not to your liking, change your liking". Everyone showed up on time with a smile. Great balance of scheduled and free time. Saw the highlights of the cities and countryside - just enough to start planning our return.

The first couple of days were just ok because the local Munich guide talked almost exclusively of the beer culture. I'm sure there is much more to Munich than beer. The tour was very good. There were a few minor glitches, but understandable since we were the first group to take this particular tour. One thing that was not worth the stop was the gazebo from the Sound of Music. I suggest taking that off the tour. The bus could not get in through the city gate to see the Silent Night chapel. Pre-Tour Planning

We've put together some specific information on what you should know about this tour before you go. You'll also find more general information about "Getting Ready for Your Tour" on our Tour FAQ.

Trip Resources

Learn more about Germany and Austria: Check out a collection of Rick's TV shows, radio interviews and articles, plus recommended books and movies.

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email. About one month prior to the tour departure, we'll email you directions on how to get from the airport to your first tour hotel, as well as the complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour.

Transportation

Many tour members arrive a day or two before the tour begins — and those who don't, wish they had. This allows you ample time to get over jet lag and make the most of the first few days of the tour.

There is more than one way to get to and from your tour. Most tour members will arrange to fly into Munich and out of Vienna ("multicity" on flight-booking websites). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay.

For information about flying within Europe, ask your travel agent or check Rick's list of European budget airlines.

Read Rick's train travel and rail pass tips to decide if your travel plans merit a rail pass.

If you have additional European travel or tour questions, contact the Tour Department at 425-608-4217 or email tour@ricksteves.com.

Sightseeing on Your Own

If you arrive in Munich before your tour begins, use Rick's Pocket Munich & Salzburg guidebook to get oriented, try out a few words of German, and get over your jet lag with lots of fresh air and exercise (consider renting a bike and pedaling through the English Garden; get details in the guidebook or from any tourist office).

Here are some suggestions for sightseeing in Munich that we will not be doing as a group (see the guidebook for details): Nymphenburg Palace, Deutsches Museum, Residenz, BMW World, Olympic Park, Alte and Neue Pinakothek, Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. Remember, we will tour nearby Neuschwanstein Castle as a group on Day 2.

Packing

While it is always important to pack light, for tours departing in November and December you'll want to be ready for temperatures in the 20s and 30s Fahrenheit — lightweight thermal underwear, a winter coat, sweater, wool socks, a warm hat, scarf, and gloves are strongly recommended. While hiking boots are not necessary, we recommend you bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes with soles offering good traction.

For more advice on what (and what not!) to pack, see Rick's packing tips.

Special packing note: We use an audioguide system for many of our sightseeing and museum tours. If you wear a hearing aid, we strongly recommend bringing headphones that go over your ears to allow you to fully enjoy these tours.
