Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at 4 p.m. at our hotel in Trier for a "Welcome to Germany" meeting. Then we'll take an evening walk through Deutschland's oldest city and get acquainted over dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Trier.

Day 2: Roman Ruins and Mosel Wine

We'll begin our day with a walking tour of the historic Roman and medieval heart of Trier, marveling at its Porta Nigra gate, the most impressive Roman fortification in Germany. Afterwards we'll visit a local winery, learning how the steep slopes along the Mosel River produce some of the finest white wines in the world and tasting some of the region's famous bounty. We'll set you free for the rest of the day to explore more of Trier's pedestrian-friendly city center.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Trier.

Day 3: Burg Eltz Castle and Baden-Baden

This morning's drive takes us along the Mosel River to the mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence — where we'll tour the complex and experience firsthand how lords and ladies lived 500 years ago. Before leaving the valley behind, we'll stop in the über-quaint village of Beilstein for lunch together along the riverbank. Our final destination is the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival, we'll take an orientation stroll through town. Then you'll have the rest of the evening free to "do the spa" (with or without your swimsuit), wander along the shaded riverside promenade, or try your luck in the ornate casino.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 ½ hours. Sleep in Baden-Baden.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to a nearby luge course for a ride on a tiny sled with wheels (weather permitting) before our arrival at the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, leaving some free time to linger in the past and order up some lunch (prepare for the wurst!). Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in clifftop Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views and have dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 5: The Schilthorn and Hiking in the Swiss Alps

Let's begin the day with a thrilling ride up the gondola lift to the top of the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet. The rest of the day is all yours to loiter in the thin air or find your way back down to Mürren. You may want to join your guide for an optional mountain walk…or take a narrow-gauge railway up the other side of the valley to Kleine Scheidegg, near the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

This morning we'll witness the roaring, thundering, crashing, splashing display of nature's awesome power in Trümmelbach Falls — a series of subterranean waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet into darkness behind the valley's cliffs. You'll have the afternoon free to take a brisk mountain walk or explore more of the Berner Oberland on your own before we regroup for dinner.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairy-tale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens, and oompah-hospitality. Tonight, we'll enjoy dinner together in Munich.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Munich.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town, learning about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairy-tale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle (when available). We'll hike back down to share lunch together before leaving Germany behind. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center, and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 10: All Day to Soak Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring the Mirabell Gardens. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could enjoy this evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so after settling in to our lakeside lodging we'll enjoy a boat cruise past breathtaking villages and craggy mountain vistas. Spend a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before tonight's dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to visit the thought-provoking Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna, once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with an evening walking tour through historic Vienna before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in sophisticated Vienna with a trip to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Then we'll explore the city's rich Habsburg heritage, including its elegant Opera House (when available). Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or to slow down and enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Physical Demands

Our tours are physically active! It's an essential part of the Rick Steves tour experience. On our Best of Germany, Austria & Switzerland in 14 Days tour — among other things — you'll need to happily…

  1. Carry/roll your luggage over uneven pavement (possibly several blocks) and up stairways to reach your hotel, then up several flights of stairs to reach your room.
  2. Be on your feet, walking and standing for up to three hours, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
  3. Sleep with street noise and no (or weak) air conditioning.
  4. After orientation and transportation lessons, be able to navigate towns and cities on your own.
  5. Adjust to constant Alpine weather changes that can interfere with sightseeing.
  6. Handle steep walks and long castle stair climbs at Burg Eltz, Neuschwanstein, and Trümmelbach Falls.

Andrea was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and attentive to the group’s needs. The accommodations and meals were all fantastic.

"Our stay in Switzerland was superb! The views and weather were breathtaking. A bonus was the trees were changing colors. I didn’t know what to expect for the optional hiking. It was mostly flat, not mountains. I think you should add that to the information you send tour groups."

We had not been to many of the places we visited on this tour. Our experiences seeing new places and meeting new people (both on and off the tour) was fantastic. We have already started talking about which places we want to go back and visit again.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"One of the most memorable may have been the young woman at the cooking school in Salzburg who sang opera during our dinner experience there. Neither of us expected such power and beauty when she opened her mouth to sing. WOW! Even watching her breathing techniques was fascinating. Such a cool and unexpected surprise! Another biggie had to be the beauty of Murren and the Swiss Alps. We had zero expectations for that section of the trip. It was AMAZING, our favorite part."

We waited 3 years for this trip!!! Signed up in 2019 for 2020, again in 2020 for 2021 and then in 2021 for 2022! It lived up to all that was promised! Our wonderful guide Andrea was amazing, knowledgeable, fun and inspiring! Our group of fellow travelers were wonderful and kind! I researched all the things to do ( I had a long time to do it!) and it made the trip more enjoyable, interesting and fulfilling!! We went to bed late and got up early and I never slept on the bus! My dream came true!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Every day there was a wow moment! 2000 year old Roman ruins in Trier. Our balcony view of the Swiss Alps and the cows with their bells in Murren. Seeing the palace in Munich and the treasury. Neuschwanstein castle with the fall colors shrouded in fog. Beautiful Salzburg and all the Sound of Music places to see! Tiny Hallstatt in the fall colors and Vienna with all the beautiful architecture, museums, and churches! Last, but not least our wonderful guide, Andrea and our fellow tour members!"

This was our first experience with a group tour, and we found it to be an excellent balance of great education and leadership from our guide, Thomas, and local guides, as well as ample free time to explore on our own. We loved the itinerary of this trip. We visited small cities, medium cities, large cities, and small villages in the Alps. We went to palaces and castles, rode subways and funiculars and trams, had a boat ride and hiked in the Alps.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"This is a hard one as there were many 'wow" moments for me. But being a nature lover, I keep coming back to the views of the Alps from our hotel in Murren. Right up there though is the view of the quaint market square in Hallstatt from our hotel balcony and of course the boat ride on Lake Hallstatt."

Wow! Our tour was fantastic. When I kept thinking it couldn't get any better it did. Our tour guide, Thomas, was wonderful. He made sure everyone was satisfied with everything. He went over and above to provide us with the best experience imaginable. He even changed up our schedule due to the weather so we would have better views of the mountains in Switzerland. We had 20 in our group and everyone was great. We had so much fun!. I wish we could be on another tour together.

Great itinerary, great fellow travelers, great tour guide. This was our 4th Rick Steves trip and our fellow travelers rivaled the ones we had on our Village Italy in 14 Days tour. It was a real fun group. Hans, our guide, was very witty, and did a fabulous job organizing activities despite the challenge of some bad weather in Switzerland (it was chilly & rainy like Seattle in December).

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Flying umbrella handles! (That's an inside joke our tour and Hans will laugh at). All joking aside, it's hard to choose between The Schilthorn, Neuschwanstein, or Lake Hallstatt. All three are "WOW's". From my engineering perspective, the gondolas and funiculars are really cool, too. Amazing how they built those on sheer cliffs -- what a challenge! Going to Oktoberfest in Munich was a blast, too. Hey, it's just hard to distill the trip into a single WOW."

Kelly

Tour: 09/24/22

We had one of the best tour groups. The cities we visited were interesting. The rainy days put a drain on a lot of the adventures that I was looking forward to and did not occur. Octoberfest was my draw to scheduling this time of year, which was a very rainy day and evening. I would love to revisit Schilthorn and be able to hike the Swiss Alps on a not so soggy and rainy time of year. The visibility at Schilthorn was zero.

The tour was wonderful! We did have a lot of cloudy/rainy days but our tour guide Hans was terrific in keeping us laughing and having a good time! We loved Baden Baden, Salzburg and Lake Hallstatt. The people we met in Germany, Switzerland and Austria were so friendly and I have never seen so much bread in all my life. The tour of Mauthausen concentration camp was so important, you see things like this in the movies but it's so much more being there.

As always, a wonderful trip! At long last, it was good to be traveling again. Eris (our tour guide) was organized, personable, knowledgeable, helpful and humorous (even though she said Germans have no sense of humor!). She had, at least me, back in the groove of traveling with an empty tank and on-time! Beautiful countries all three!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many "wow" moments! But my favorite one was when the gondola cracked through the clouds on what was a very rainy portion of the trip, and we had a 360 Degree view of the top of the Alps at the top of the Schilthorn! Beautiful! Although only for a few minutes it was stunning! Time for a few pictures before the clouds closed in again. And I know Eris worked hard to calculate the best possible time to be there and it worked!"

FABULOUS! This was our 2nd RS Tour, and we had a wonderful time. Ruby, our guide, helped us create some great memories that we will treasure for years to come. She has such a fun personality and sense of humor. Johnny, our bus driver, got us safely where we needed to go. We enjoyed him as well. We are hooked on RS Tours! There is the perfect amount of time with the group, and time on your own. We also learned so much history and culture and tried new food, that we wouldn’t have on our own.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The Swiss Alps! Even though we were there in 2019 on the BOE14 tour, I think the Swiss Alps will always “Wow!” us! I described the Lauterbrunnen Valley as Yosemite on steroids during our 2019 trip. Staying in Murren was even more amazing. We had lovely, heavenly views from our hotel, and took some hikes in the breathtaking nature that surrounds the area. The cowbells are a treat! And the alphorn and accordion player concert with a view of the alps was just perfect! I could go on and on!"

Our second RSE tour, the GAS itinerary and collection of tour mates were all fantastic. Our guide, Ruby, went above and beyond to make sure everyone was getting what they wanted out of experience. One noticeable difference between this and our first tour (2015) was the caliber of local guides, which in this instance really added to the overall quality and content of the tour. Hans/Trier, Michael/Munich, and Bridgette/Salzburg really brought those venues to life with their knowledge and stories.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The tour's 3-nt stay in Mürren was the perfect stop between Germany's Mosel/BlackForest regions and what was to follow in Bavaria and Austria. We were blessed with incredible weather during Berner Oberland portion of the tour, allowing opportunity to hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg on an absolutely crystal-clear autumn day. Finishing the hike with lunch at Grindelwaldblick's patio tables -- sipping a Rugenbräu with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau within reach -- was a true moment in time."

Bryan, our tour guide, was unbelievably great - intelligent, informative and often funny. people were all great. The other tour guides were also excellent. The places visited were interesting and historical. The tour meals were excellent. Biggest need would be to have WIFi on the traveling bus. Since we all wore our masks religiously on the bus and around any gatherings one has to guess where the Covid infection started.

"I've traveled extensively in Europe, but not much in the Germanic countries. My favorite sight was Salzburg Cathedral, probably the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen. (I might have liked it especially because, although Baroque in style, it is slightly subdued and in better taste than the over-the-top examples we saw elsewhere.)"

Overall, the tour is a fantastic way to see a lot in a relatively short period of time. For me, it struck a great balance of quality and quantity. The only experiences I would recommend changing would be Trier and Baden Baden in favor of the Rhine Valley. Other than that, I loved every place the tour took us. The tour guide, Hans, was fantastic as well. He was fun, knowledgeable, and kept the group entertained. If you're looking to see a lot and have it organized for you, this is the way to go!

"Stopping to hang out with the cows in the Swiss Alps during an incredibly picturesque hike. The views were spectacular (it was impossible to take a bad picture) and hearing the cow bells (more cowbell) as we hiked with mountains in the backdrop was majestic. The whole experience was unexpected and truly incredible. I left with some incredible pictures, and memories for a lifetime."

The tour has great variety of history, culture, time in nature, social time with tour group, contemplative time at Austrian concentration camp. Our tour guide, Iris, was outstanding. She kept us on schedule ( German promptness) , selected excellent restaurants, and even adjusted our trip to the top of the Alps for the day with the best weather. Mostly, she was an excellent teacher! I feel like I learned a lot of world history.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour- a lot of variety and incredible beauty. I was glad that The concentration camp was included. It wouldn’t seem right to travel to this area and not acknowledge the atrocities that are part of the history. Our guide, Iris, was very knowledgeable and this was the most punctual group we’ve ever traveled with. That allows the whole trip to run smoothly.

It was a wonderful dream come true for me, even with a hiccup in the beginning and losing our main guide Matthias, we were left in great hands with Thomas. I learned so much on this tour about history and geography. I never knew how beautiful Germany was. I had heard Switzerland was gorgeous, and it lived up to expectations. We loved riding on the big tour bus with plenty of room for us each to have our own seat. It was great not having to plan for hotels or worry about getting anywhere on time. Lodging and food was pretty much taken care of us by the tour. The tour was exactly as described in the tour brochures, including activity levels.

"Hiking in Switzerland. We rode a train up from the Lauterbrunnen valley to Wengen. From there we took a cable car to Mannlichen, then hiked from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. We saw very few people on this hike. It was foggy when we started and I now understand why Swiss farmers put bells on their cows. Even though we could not see very far ahead through the fog, we could locate the cows throughout the valleys below by the sound of their bells. The scenery was spectacular."

This was an amazing tour. Our tour guide Iris and her assistant Francis contributed to it in so many ways, they were the greatest. There was so much variety. This was my first trip to Europe. Our tour guide made the experience so much better because of his outstanding knowledge of the history of all 3 countries. Not sure travel to Europe will ever be the same after this experience.

Our trip was extremely enjoyable with fantastic exposures to the scenery of Switzerland, southern Germany, and Austria. I felt the balance between guided tours and free time to explore museums and hike on our own was perfect. Our guide, Andrea Wolf, was very knowledgeable, very pleasant, and very considerate of all of the guests under her care.

What kept me from giving tour an outstanding rating had to do with short time in Baden Baden, arrived early evening, would have liked an afternoon and evening there. Also the visit to the Third Man Museum in Vienna was way too long and the local guide there was very eccentric to say the least.

We were very excited to be able to take the tour, after having our scheduled trip cancelled in 2020 due to Covid. All my expectations were met and even exceeded in many instances. All our stops were equally well worth it, with a nice mix of fun, beautiful scenery, fascinating history, and great food and friends. I highly recommend the trip to everyone.

The GAS tour was an interesting mix of castles, beautiful mountains, interesting history and great food. Our guide, Andrea, was cheerful, organized, interesting/informative and did her best to adapt to covid protocols. This was our 5th Rick Steves Tour and as with the others it was well run. If I were asked for improvements, I would have liked more time in Baden-Baden. Although I know we were warned about it the bus ride to Munich seemed long.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"My favorite WOW moments were The Schilthorn (even though it was our second time), Burg Eltz, an authentic crazy patchwork of rooms (I can understand why it's Ricks favorite) and Trümmelbach Falls. The tour guide said we can take our time but then it was rush rush rush. There were 3 people who fell on this trip. He was checked out and not very engaged with us as a group. Didn't speak loud enough and then would mumble. It so happened that a couple both fell at different times, Hans commented that it must run in the family when the second one tripped and fell.

The tour was excellent. Hans was very knowledgeable and experienced. He handled some challenging situations and personalities with grace and charm. Part of the reason for selecting the tour was the opportunity to travel with my friends. That was an important and enjoyable aspect of the tour for me.

"Switzerland was incredibly beautiful and I've been to Switzerland many times. We were extremely lucky to have beautiful weather. The one negative was that we took the wrong route on the "short" hike down the mountain. I wish I would have had a map or more instruction on which trail to take. The hike down the road was dangerous and more difficult than it should have been."

Being that this was our honeymoon, we wanted to do something special that we'd look back upon and cherish. Neither of us had ever traveled to Europe, so this trip was meant to be an adventure into the unknown. Mission accomplished! Seeing as much as we did in the two weeks we had was the perfect balance of organization and independence. The weather was even better than forecasted too!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"So many moments to choose from, but I'd have to say anytime I realized I was doing something special that people had done for hundred (if not thousands) of years before me. Whether drinking a beer at Hofbräuhaus in München or Stegl in Salzburg or listening to the cow bells ringing in the distance from Mürren or doing a spa in Baden-Baden or climbing through the salt mines of Hallstatt... one has to appreciate the tradition of these places. So much to experience!"

The tour was everything we had hoped for, and more. Our tour leader Maisey was outstanding - supremely knowledgeable of the history and culture of our tour area, wonderfully personable and witty, and she did a great job of keeping us on schedule. Trier was a huge surprise to me - beautiful, historical, and very tourist-friendly. Murren and the Swiss Alps were magnificent, and the great weather we enjoyed there was a fortunate bonus. Oktoberfest was overcrowded as expected.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking through Murren and the surrounding trails and towns with the Eiger Monck, and Jungfrau peaks seemingly close enough to touch was an out-of-this-world three days of peace and wonder. The beautiful weather and German/Swiss beer (especially Schwarzmonch) added to the ecstasy."

My mother, sister and I were looking for an experience to get a closer look at Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I felt like this was a wonderful tour to get to see some new destinations and to get a feeling for the culture of these three nations, even if it felt rushed at times. Maisie was a crucial part of this exploration. She provided excellent commentary and descriptions for the places we were visiting as well as talking about the people of these nations.

"I have a couple amazing "wow" moments, one was the discovery of Berg Eltz. You walk along this wooded path for a good few minutes, then before you is this huge castle that seems to take up the whole valley. The second was our days in Murren. We had beautiful sunshine for our days in Switzerland, which opened up to let us discover the Swiss alps. There is magic in those mountains, and I am so grateful we got to experience that magic!"

I loved the tour overall but couldn't help but feel that reality is being ignored in the designing of some aspects of our experience. Some hotels didn't have room for Rick's idea of a "small group" in the lobby or breakfast areas, and tours in places like the Black Forest Open Air Museum and the rooms of the Vienna Treasury were crowded enough (with us) that it was difficult to see and I felt bad for other visitors we crowded out. Baden Baden was 'eh' and Halsatt is no longer nice to visit.

What made the tour stand out was our great guide Maise! She had really insightful and interesting things to say about all the regions we visited, gave great recommendations and was generally great to be around! The places we visited were gorgeous and the meals were good! The hotels were all very comfortable and nice. Our tour with Iris exceeded our expectations. The places we went would have been difficult at best to visit. Lake Hallstatt is just one example. I am very impressed with all Rick Steve's tours. This one was so wonderful because of the bonding with the group and the tour guide was terrific. I picked this tour for the extra day in Switzerland and I'm so glad we did because we had perfect weather and was able to do all the outdoor hiking and go up to top of Schlitrhorn which was a WOW experience. Every hotel wonderful, food great. Itinerary perfect.

"It is impossible to have a favorite for there were "wow"s" daily, From the Alps in Switzerland up the Schlitrhorn, Breathtaking churches, castles. Being inside the Frauline Maria's convent and the nuns were singing on The Sound of Music bicycle tour. Th bike riding in Munich through the park and picnic in the bergarten. The beauty of Lake Hallstatt and the resort we stayed at. The city walking tours were all excellent. Our final meal that was a part of The Melk cellars was just terrific."

This tour was exceptional! I can say that I normally don't spend that kind of money, but it was totally worth every penny . Normally I would rather go on my own to save money but my wife chose to go and it was worth it! Matti was personable and was very knowledgeable. We have had other tour guides but he exceeded all expectations.

Once again a perfect vacation. What is it about RS tours that inspire such camaraderie within a group of strangers? Everyone was warm, welcoming and a whole lot of fun.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Mürren and the Swiss Alps - magnificent - breathtaking beauty. One of our favorite things about RS tours are the experiences we would have never encountered on our own such as the trip to a lovely village for a delicious warm onion quiche luncheon at Haus Lipmann and Lake Hallstatt."

The tour was outstanding. Matty brought us together as a group. The sites and the weather were better than we could hope for. It combined fun with learning as all Rick Steve Tours do.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Hiking in the Alps in Switzerland on crystal clear days was magical. The majestic snow kissed mountains against a blue sky above and the green pastures with the cow bells chiming below was an experience I will never forget. The group encountered Fiona on a hike. Fiona is a blond seven year old who lives near Murren. She sang us a cute song on the spot. We all fell in love with her."

Great sights; comfortable bus with like-minded travelers;lot's of room since the tour was only 24 people; perfect weather nearly all the time but could have used more AC at night in several hotels. Mathias Unger, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable, fun, entertaining and very accommodating.....even got us Kaiserschmarrn before the trip ended...could not have asked for a better guide quite frankly. Seems like maybe we could have gone inside a few more buildings as part of the tour perhaps.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Crystal clear Lauterbrunnen valley with the Eiger, Monk and Jungfrau lording over us along with the constant clatter of swiss cowbells on the Birg to Murren Hike was not to be beaten...the Manchlichen hike was also very nice as well...view from the Schilthorn is unbeatable but the Jungfraujoch is the Top of Europe and right in the middle of all those glaciers...who can't be awed by the engineering that went into that train ride."

This was my first experience with Rick Steves Tours, and I could not have been more pleased. It was such a delightful experience. Mattie was fabulous! He is so knowledgeable about the history, culture, customs, locations, etc. He also did a fantastic job ensuring that each member of the group was equipped with the information they needed to make the most of their time in each location. I enjoyed meeting and spending time with each of the travelers in our group - such delightful people!

"It's so difficult to choose only one "wow" moment. That said, I would lean toward our time in Murren, the Schilthorn, and stepping through one of my fears and completing "The Thrill Walk"."

Amazing! I was not sure about taking a group tour, in the past we traveled on our own. Matti was a great guide, making the trip fun, feeding us with history, local customs, many treats and surprises! We became quick friends with all, and everyone was friendly and open to new ideas and making the most of the experience. I'd do this again with no hesitation.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Favorite moment had to be in Switzerland. We were fortunate to have clear and beautiful views from the top of the Schilthorn, that was awesome, but my wow, would have to be, the hike to Gimmelwald. We met a young 7 year old girl, Fiona, riding her bike back and forth through the group, friendly chatting with all, and she sang us a song. We all fell in love with her and, I felt like we had just met Heidi in the mountains!"

We had a superlative tour! Everything about this tour clicked, the group was comprised of 6 singles and the remainder couple, all dedicated travelers. Not only were we a great mix, but a medical emergency occurred while we were in Murren and that seemed to unite and solidify the group in a very special way. There were several who were past alumni, but most of us were first timers. The stops are perfect, the food amazing and the hotels peaceful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Our WOW moment was 3 days of crystal blue sky, craggy snow capped peaks and vivd green valleys. Laterbrunnen and the mountains surrounding it are beyond description adjectives, and everywhere you turned was a new vista or something you had to point out or capture with your camera. The tiny town of Murren was full of charm, a young girl serenaded us with a song, the window boxes were filled with flowers and the alp horns echoed in the evening air. It is like being somewhere otherworldly."

The tour was a great experience. After traveling to Europe independently on a couple of trips, I wasn't sure how I would feel about a tour. I liked the destinations included in the GAS tour and could see that some of those could be tricky to get to on our own if we didn't want to rent a car, so we signed up. The tour surpassed my expectations and I would definitely go on another tour and recommend Rick Steve's tours to others, if fact, I already have.

So much was covered on this two week tour, from busy cities that I got lost in, to beautiful countryside where I was alone with nature. Andrea and the local guides added so much interesting information that really enhanced the trip. It was a very fast paced tour, with many early morning starts. I would have preferred less sights and more time to savor the experiences.

"I walked from Mürren to Gimmelwald on a beautiful sunny day. The views were amazing and I appreciated the company of a friendly cat that came and sat beside me as I enjoyed the sun and rested on a low stone wall. It was an "all's right with the world" moment."

This was a very good tour. It did a great job of giving us a flavor of three very similar and yet very different countries. The scenery was spectacular. We were very fortunate to get amazing weather in Switzerland. Andrea, our guide was very thorough, cheerful and informative. We loved Munich, and found it to be the perfect mix of old and new. The architecture in Vienna Austria was beautiful. Our fellow travelers were a very fun and energetic group.

The mix of large cities to small towns was just about right. We got to see a lot of sights as well as learn about the extensive history of many places. Our group was great - they really bonded and had a great time traveling together. We even did a side trip with new friends met on the tour.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Switzerland was by far the high point of the tour. Just ascending from the valley floor to Murren on the cable cars was an experience! It was almost like flying away from reality to a different place! The views from Piz Gloria were outstanding (we were blessed with great weather)! We got to do lots of hiking and exploring of the surrounding town. My runner up "wow" moment would be Lake Hallstatt. It was incredibly beautiful and peaceful after the hustle of Munich/Salzburg."

Was excited to be going to Germany for the first time and to return to 2 other countries that I love but had not been in for over 20 years.... Our guide was so terrific, flexible and experienced that she made this experience even better. All the locations, hotels, meals and the other tour members were really great. I love the RS way; orientation to new locale and then many options....The variety of incredible nature, then cities, then towns, etc. provided a great pace.....

"I have so many but I think the tour of the Third Man Museum with the passion and care of the lovely man who was also our guide made this so personal and special....... I also am grateful for our visit to Maunthausen....thank you..... But also I loved my encounters with local people. A standout moment for me was being waited on by a charming, calm and elegant woman about my age in Salzburg. She and her modest ways touched me deeply. She was surprised I wanted to take her photo......"

As this was our 3rd and not last Rick Steves tour we obviously love the tour philosophy. As with our previous tours the itinerary and tour guides met and exceeded our expectations! The choice of small hotels in the heart of the cities and the mix of experiences left nothing to be desired.

Hotels & Flights

Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into Frankfurt am Main (FRA) and out of Vienna (VIE) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The Frankfurt airport will have the most direct flights and requires a three to four-hour train ride to Trier, where the tour begins. Alternatively, you can fly into the Luxembourg Airport (LUX); a train from Luxembourg's central station to Trier is about one hour. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves tour guidebook.
