Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Germany

We'll meet at our hotel at 3 p.m. this afternoon. After a short "Welcome to Germany" meeting, we'll take a walking tour of Cologne, tracing the city's Roman origins and cultural rise to Germany's religious center in the Middle Ages. Together, we'll marvel from the exterior the scale of Northern Europe's most massive Gothic church, Cologne Cathedral, and appreciate how it survived the city bombings during WWII. Then, we'll get further acquainted over a dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Cologne.

Day 2: Burg Eltz and the Mosel River

We'll begin our day with a morning drive to the Mosel River and the mighty Burg Eltz — Europe's oldest castle still in use as a residence — where we'll tour the complex and experience firsthand how lords and ladies lived 500 years ago. Before leaving the valley behind, we'll stop in the über-quaint village of Beilstein for lunch together along the riverbank. We'll return to Cologne in the late afternoon with time for you to discover more of Cologne's history and find dinner on your own in the city's vibrant restaurant scene.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4.5 hours. Sleep in Cologne.

Day 3: Elegant Baden-Baden

This morning, we'll hop aboard our big, comfy bus and head toward the Black Forest and the old resort town of Baden-Baden, famous for its mineral baths and games of chance. Upon arrival, we'll take an orientation stroll through town showcasing the stylish streets, grand casino, and famous baths. Then you'll have the rest of the day free to wander along the shaded riverside promenade, put on your fanciest duds and visit the casino, or relax with a long soak before you enjoy dinner on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Baden-Baden.

Day 4: Black Forest and Beyond

We'll start our day with a scenic drive to a nearby luge course for a ride on a tiny sled with wheels (weather permitting) before our arrival at the Black Forest Open-Air Museum. Here we'll have a local guide walk us through the preserved farmhouses and mills, leaving some free time to linger in the past and order up some lunch (prepare for the wurst!). Then we'll drive up into Switzerland's snow-peaked Berner Oberland country. At the end of the deep Lauterbrunnen Valley, we'll take a thrilling gondola lift up to our hotel in clifftop Mürren, where we'll enjoy amazing views and have dinner together.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 5: The Schilthorn and Hiking in the Swiss Alps

Let's begin the day with a thrilling ride up the gondola lift to the top of the 10,000-foot Schilthorn with a view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks. The rest of the day is all yours to loiter in the thin air, find your way back down to Mürren, and explore more of the magnificent mountains on your own.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 6: More of the Berner Oberland

Today you're free to explore more of Europe's most dramatic scenery. You may consider a mountain excursion that combines a narrow-gauge railway, a gondola lift, and a spectacular alpine walk above the tree line, surrounded by a panorama of cut-glass peaks…or wander through the valley and walk to the thundering Trümmelbach Falls, a unique set of waterfalls encased behind the valley walls. This evening, we'll regroup for dinner together at our mountain chalet.

Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No Bus. Sleep in Mürren.

Day 7: Scenic Drive into Bavaria

Today's drive is a good time to catch up on your trip journal, listen to music, curl up with a good book, or just sit back and enjoy views of pristine mountains and sparkling lakes. We'll stop for lunch on our way to the heart of Bavaria — home of fairy-tale castles, well-worn lederhosen, sing-along beer gardens, and oompah-hospitality. Tonight, we'll enjoy dinner together in Munich.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 7 hours. Sleep in Munich.

Day 8: All Day to Explore Munich

We'll spend our morning getting a behind-the-scenes look at Munich with a walking tour through its historic Old Town, learning about the "checkered" history and traditions of Bavaria. The rest of the day is yours to stroll around Germany's most livable city, soak up some culture at its world-class museums, or rent a bike to pedal the car-free paths of the English Garden and Isar River.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Munich.

Day 9: Neuschwanstein and Salzburg

This morning we'll drive through farming country, then take an uphill hike to tour the fairy-tale fantasy of "Mad" King Ludwig: Neuschwanstein Castle (when available). After hiking back down, you'll have free time for lunch before leaving Germany behind. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in Salzburg and settle into our quaint hotel. We'll end our day with an orientation walk through the historic center and share a "Welcome to Austria" dinner together.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 10: All Day to Soak Up Salzburg

Salzburg is a perfect town for a walking tour, and that's how we'll spend our morning: strolling under the wrought-iron signs of the Getreidegasse, going Baroque at the Salzburg Cathedral, and exploring the Mirabell Gardens. The rest of your day is free for wandering through Salzburg's magnificent gardens, hiking up the fortress hill for a panoramic view, or pedaling a rented bike into the countryside, singing "do, re, mi." Your guide will give you a run-down of local concerts you could enjoy this evening.

Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Salzburg.

Day 11: Austria's Lovely Lake District

This morning we'll make our way to postcard-pretty Lake Hallstatt. It's far too cute for our bus, so after settling in to our lakeside lodging we'll enjoy a boat cruise past breathtaking villages and craggy mountain vistas. Spend a free afternoon communing with Mother Nature on foot or by boat — or hike up to one of the world's oldest salt mines before tonight's dinner together.

Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Boat: 1 hour. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep on Lake Hallstatt.

Day 12: Lessons of History

Today we'll drive toward Vienna, stopping en route to visit the thought-provoking Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, where we'll learn about the Holocaust and lessons of 1933–1945. Then we'll follow the Danube Valley to the grand finale of our tour — Vienna, once the capital of Europe's wealthiest empire. We'll cap off our day with an evening walking tour through historic Vienna before setting you free for dinner on your own.

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 13: All Day in Classy Vienna

We'll begin our day in sophisticated Vienna with a trip to the Third Man Museum for a fascinating look at the city's post-WWII history. Then we'll explore the city's rich Habsburg heritage by marveling at the massive art collection at the Kunsthistoriches Museum. Your afternoon is free to explore another world-class museum or two, or to slow down and enjoy sipping a coffee in the city where Europe's café scene was born. Tonight we'll meet for our last dinner together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Prost!

Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Sleep in Vienna.

Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast

Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's a breeze to reach Vienna's airport by train, bus or taxi. You'll have easy connections to home, or on to other points in Europe. Auf Wiedersehen!

Aside from catching Covid, I was extremely happy with my first Rick Steves tour experience. The guides, accommodations, and activities were all excellent. Much better experience than we could have managed on our own.

This was our first trip with a large tour group; it turned out not to fit our needs. We found the number of moves from place to place to be limiting and frenetic and the food not to our taste and often unhealthy The accomodations were pleasant, and the hotel staffs were always gracious and helpful, but the rooms were cramped. Our guide provided a lot of information and became particularly engaging in the second half of the trip. She did all she could to work around the unfortunate weather.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Schildhorn despite the rain; being free to explore Munich. A negative wow: when the vegetarian option for dinner was a dumpling on top of spaetzle. Appalling from a health perspective."

Good group. Lot of time in bus, but understandable given the itinerary. Good locations for included meals - didn't like the dessert at Hallstatt. Hotels were good. The fans provided when rooms don't have a/c was crucial - good job. Orientation walks were well done. Bus ride was a little jerky. I'm a bus driver too. I asked how the bus was doing (didn't mention the jerkiness) and he mentioned it had a sensitive throttle and brake. So wasn't his fault.

The tour was great overall. Iris our guide was very knowledgeable and took much care to ensure our trip was fulfilled and pleasurable. Our other tour people were kind and seemed to have a good time as well. There was a bit of drama with illness but I believe that happens sometimes. Everyone responds differently.

This tour was incredible! Organization of group activities and free time was precisely planned, as was time traveling on the bus, listening to diverse topics on the history, politics, economics, and geography, of the countries we visited. Our guide, Daniela, being a local Bavarian, added a personal perspective to current issues and customs. Time was optimized without felt rushed. Local guides were passionate scholars who engaged and energized the group with their erudition and commitment.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Mürren! The view from our window, admiring the peaks, listening to the cowbells, hiking the paths around us, going into the belly of a mountain and admiring the force of the water in those iconic waterfalls, being zipped up to the top of the Schilthorn, and walk the void down the Birg. The fairytale tiny town Hallstatt, the "Mad" king castle, the concerts in Salzburg and Vienna, the vibrant energy and friendly character of Münich. Wow from beginning to end!"

Overall our experience was excellent. I do think you should offer pre-planned options for the free time like other tour companies do. It would be very easy for you to arrange, for example, 3 optional tours with local guides for Vienna which tour member would pay for. The idea that they will "go explore" because they "read the book" just wastes valuable time. When you have 5 hours to "explore" Vienna, don't let them loose to just wonder around.

We Are already planning our next Rick Steves tour.

While I glad we saw three countries, in hindsight I would have appreciated less time in Germany and more time in Switzerland.

Wonderful balance of historical sites and explanations, castles, cathedrals, nature experiences, time in the Alps and Lake Halstatt, explanations and experiences re: Germany with WWI and WWII and rise of dictatorship. We loved the opportunities to hear musical performances and see the marionettes. The tour of the organic farming operation was so informative and enlightening. We were very active physically, and intrigued by the history, art, and cultural offerings of the past and the present.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Seeing the Alps! Having the time to really look at the mountains, feel the cold, breathe the thin air, walk in the flower filled meadows, hear the cow bells, taste the cheese, hear the music performed by citizens in costume who played the accordian and big horn. I loved seeing the huge mountains, cliffs, and waterfalls. "

I loved that it was active (luge ride, walking, salt mine tour, etc.) and that I learned so much. Our guide Matti was a great teacher, with a great sense of humor. I was also impressed with the tour design -- the balance of group vs independent time; the use of time on the bus as learning culture and history vs. rest; the scheduling of structured activities vs. free time to explore; pre-determined meals so that we "tasted" the culture vs. doing our own thing for meals.

I loved seeing each of the places we traveled to. Local guide Michael in Munich was outstanding in his style and knowledge. It was a very expensive tour. I felt there were more "on your own" meals and excursions than I have experienced in the past. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, but not terribly flexible with varying mobility issues of the tourists. Probably could have left out the "Third Man" museum tour in Vienna. In spite of rain almost every day, our guide Matty worked around it, picking the best days to do things like going to the top of the Schilthorn or the Burg-Eltz castle so we could enjoy our time. We had been trying to take this tour for 9 years, and I was worried it would be disappointing with that kind of build up, but this was wonderful.

We had never been on a Rick Steves tour and it was the best experience we could have imagined. We will never travel to Europe without being on a RS tour. Andrea, our tour guide, is an excellent guide. She is knowledgeable, energetic, gave many suggestions for the unstructured portions of our days. Geographical coverage with this tour is good, but I felt like I spent too much time on the coach, thus the "very good" rating. For future trips, I would look for those where I could spend 3 days minimum in each location to fully appreciate the culture and area.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"I have 2!! Enjoyed the impromptu evening Alpine "musical" concert in Swisserland. Andrea arranged for a Swiss accordion & an alpine horn musician to play select music pieces. Informative and delightful. The second was the unschedued tour of an Austrian dairy farm [Bio Hofkaserei Furstenhof, Kuchl/Salzburg] with Maria & Nicky Rettenbacher. The Germany, Austria and Switzerland tour was terrific - well designed and messaged. Messaged you ask? It was very clear that Rick wanted us (Americans) to see Western Europe through the lens of recent history (WWII), by highlighting many of the Nazi and post war sites. The overriding theme: the danger of Right wing extremism that nearly destroyed Europe and the echoes that reverberate in the US and the rest of the world today. That said, the Schilthorn and Lake Hallstatt were bucket list for me

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely the Schilthorn! Spectacular snow-capped peaks shrouded by clouds one moment and revealing their splendor the next. The "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"/James Bond exhibit was a kick! Our guide made sure that we were on the first trams up the mountain because, as she predicted, by 10:00AM, the clouds took over. Our views at 8:30/9:00 were sublime. The Neuschwanstein Castle was right out of a fairly tale and the first glance at Lake Hallstatt was incredible. Carefully designed tours."

This was the first time I ever left North America and at age 69 it was about time. This was our first Rick Steves tour and it definitely won’t be our last. The cities we visited were great. This tour was all it was cracked up to be - from start to finish! We had taken the Best of Europe tour a few years back and couldn't wait to get back to some of the places we only touched upon during that tour. Switzerland is especially beautiful. Oktoberfest in Munich and Vienna was so much fun. Overall, the food, drink and scenic wonders were well worth the cost of the trip!

We had a magnificent tour with terrific people and two wonderful guides; Matti and Mary were both outstanding! I can’t tell you what I enjoyed the most—Matti’s depth of knowledge and sense of humor or Mary’s kindness & ability to make our visits relevant and personal. I regret losing so many folks to Covid (10), but the overall demeanor and carriage of the group was positive and fun; they were a great group of folks to travel with.

The tour to Germany, Austria and Switzerland was fabulous! The tour guide Matti was amazing. He was very knowledgeable, had a great sense of humor, and was flexible which is greatly appreciated. I loved those “surprises” we often had, only adding to the already amazing trip. Loved every where we went. It was a beautiful day in the Alps and Oktoberfest did not disappoint. Magnificent. This is a rigorous, demanding tour, both in number of days and miles covered. However, it is exactly as advertised on the RS website. A few long bus days, but they provided welcome interludes with wonderful scenery. Lots of walking and exercise in clean mountain air. This tour has some great mid-day stops: Burg Eltz Castle, Mauthausen concentration camp, Franz Joseph’s summer villa. We had a wonderful, collegial group, led by Donald White.

"Big surprise—Murren. We enjoyed running into people from Best of Europe 14 Days and My Way Alpine Europe at the top of Schilthorn. However, the GAS tour is the only one of the three that actually stays in beautiful Murren. This rare three-night stay allows lots of free time for hiking. We were fortunate to see the annual parade of cows wearing floral headdresses celebrating their coming down from the high pastures. Also saw a cow helicoptered down to the valley. Big double take on that!"

I found many things/locations to exceed my expectations and a few that fell short. I believe that part of my perception in this matter were the length of bus travel vs. number of days stay in a couple of places. As an example, because of the late hour arrival of the bus in Baden Baden we were left with little time to use the spa and/or visit the casino.

This was my second tour but my first bus tour with Rick Steve’s. Since I had been to all three countries-Germany, Austria, and Switzerland before, the itinerary was different enough that I was optimistic I would get a different perspective on this trip. I was not disappointed. The comfortable bus, expert driver, tour guide Andrea and my other tour mates made this an unforgettable trip. The educational component from our bus talks, to the guides, plus the Rick Steve’s guide book-outstanding!

"So many impromptu “wow” moments- organized and not. I really enjoyed visiting the organic Jersey dairy family farm where a husband , wife and family members make cheese and cosmetics from the milk of their herd. Learning about the sustainable practices of raising their herd, and the cheese making process with free samples was a highlight of the trip. Cheese, soaps, and cosmetics were for sale right from the source. It was so random before a castle visit -that is why the ‘wow” factor for me."

We did like the places that we stopped at in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - although I think we liked the smaller cities the best. It was a beautifully executed tour. Everything went smoothly and the history and context from local guides and our tour leader added richness to the experience. Such an amazing journey that combined breathtaking beauty, culture, history and a TON of family. The people on our tour quickly became our friends and it felt like we knew them forever. Our tour guide and especially the apprentice. We’re also so good and extremely knowledgeable, interesting and helpful.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Definitely Murren! It’s beauty took my breath away. I loved listening to the “music” of the cowbells as we hiked many of the trails. Trummelbach falls was amazing. Also, the “Big Thrill” walk was a personal accomplishment for me as I have an extreme fear of heights! Also enjoyed the tine we spent in Munich at Biergartens and Haufbrauer house and our group dinner with cheering as the bartender “tapped a new keg”. Really loved it all! "

Every aspect of our trip was absolutely remarkable! The itinerary provided an excellent sampling of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, including various cities and sites to visit. I especially enjoyed WW1 and WWII history that was shared by our fabulous guide, Carlos. Each bus ride went quickly as we enjoyed the beautiful scenery, stops, and history lessons. Our group included many wonderful people who quicky became friends and well as travel buddies.

Wonderful trip I enjoyed meeting everyone on the tour. When you take a 14 day trip and see three countries you know going in you will see just a taste. I'm fine with that and loved all we did.

The GAS tour is great, lots of territory--3 countries!-- and experiences. Castles, Alps, luges, and salt mines! It also involves substantial travel time on the bus to cover all of that territory. You do get a "taste" of various places, but not much time anywhere. For example, we did not arrive in BadenBaden until 5 pm, and we left early the next morning. Munich was only 1 cold, rainy day. The RS guide and the local guides were superb.

Overall, it was a nice tour. Carlos gave a lot of great insight about where we were and what we would be doing. The sights we saw were typically very good. Sometimes the travel time between destinations was a bit long, and sometimes the dinner food choices were limited. The hotel rooms were fine. Since we don't spend a lot of time there, they served their purpose. But overall everything was very good.

After our first, totally amazing, Rick Steves tour last year, our high expectations were most definitely met! The itinerary and activities were all very thoughtfully curated and extraordinarily well-planned. The 14 days were maximized to the fullest - I feel like we saw and did SO much, without it ever being too much or too tiring. Loved that it was a group of 20 - this size made things very manageable, and the group felt tighter / closer than on our previous, slightly larger Rick Steves tour.

We can’t say enough good things about this tour. It was our first time traveling with a group and we knew it had to be a RS tour. We definitely made the right choice. The small group, lodging locations, best tour guide ever, and all the little extras not listed in the itinerary all combined to make this a dream trip. Bryan Fellbusch was fun, knowledgeable, accessible, and had a great sense of humor. The itinerary was a perfect mix of structured group activities and time spent exploring alone.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Arriving in Murren, taking the beautiful walk to Hotel Jungfrau, stepping out on our balcony and just gasping at the view. It seemed we could reach out and touch the snow capped Alps. Murren was our favorite stop. The picturesque village with all the gorgeous flowers and lush gardens made every view seem like a postcard. Massive mountains on one side and a rolling meadow on the other. The air was so pure and we loved the backdrop sound of the distant cow-bells. "

This was my second RS tour and I am already looking into which Rick Steve's will be next summer's vacation. They are a fabulous option for people who like information, like structure to their day, and can't really plan it all out themselves (or don't have the time too!) Rick's tours are well curated, the hotels are great, the included meals are great, and our guide BRYAN was dedicated, organized, smart and funny.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The visit to Mauthausen, a concentration camp in Austria, balanced out all the history, art and culture we were getting. It is important to get as well rounded and full a picture of a place as possible, not just the good food and art museums (which we did in plenty). I appreciate Rick's passion for giving travelers a well balanced picture of a place, through the itineraries he builds and the local guides he chooses. "

Everything about the tour was amazing. Our guide, Iris, was phenomenal. I always felt like I was getting the full experience of any location we were taken (including our rest stops!). Having taken trips to parts of Europe without a guide, I don't know that I will go again without doing a Rick Steves tour (or, at the very least, a Rick Steves book). This tour was the perfect combination of city and countryside, history and current culture, guidance and freedom.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It's hard to choose just one, but I think opening the door to the balcony in our hotel room in Murren is the image that I'll always remember and will constantly retell to anyone asking about this tour. I got turned around going up to the room, so I didn't realize we would be facing the beautiful mountains. When we set our bags down, I saw the door to the balcony and thought "Oh, neat!" and when I opened the doors, I gasped. We'd fall asleep looking out at the mountains each night."

Overall, the tour was good. Our tour guide, Ruby, was a blast and really made everyone feel welcome. Most of the Hotels were much nicer than anticipated, which was a welcomed surprise. The tour was well organized. The sites were spectacular. Food and weather was perfect. The time with the group/guides was very informative and rushed. The orientation walks each time we arrived at a new location allowed us to be comfortable to explore independently in our free time. I think each

Outstanding tour guide (Thomas). Great tour for first-timers to RS and the locations we visited. Excellent introduction for those who wish to return to the area. Tour was well organized and executed: Efficient use of time (for example, early arrival at major sites to avoid crowds); good on-site guides; consistency in quality of hotels and meals; nice balance between active (walking) and inactive (time-off, bus, meals); Right amount of descriptive detail provided for each site; adaptability.

"The impact of WWII on each city. For me, this turned out to be a major theme of the tour. It was also timely (for color pictures of what these cities looked like after being bombed, look at Ukraine today). The NS Documentation Center and the Third Man Museum (as an illustration of how the war impacted Vienna) were my favorites, as well as seeing how each city was rebuilt after the war. "

Thomas is an amazing tour guide, he had the absolute best recommendations for food and sightseeing. He really cared about giving us a good experience and did everything in his power to make that happen, it was the trip of a lifetime and I've been to Europe several times, this was the best because of him.

We had a very good travel group - one of the best things is that Rick Steve's attracts like-minded people who can quickly gel and get along and have a great time together, even during 'free' time. The GAS trip covered a lot of ground, literally and figuratively. The local guides are always great, Cologne was notable. We always enjoy the learning aspect of the tour - i.e. the Habsburg dynasty. Enjoyed getting to know the old cities, the architecture: Cologne, Salzburg, Vienna, Munich etc.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"The favorite "wow" moment has to be the Swiss Alps. The 'moment' occurred when I opened the balcony door of our room in Murren, and discovered a panoramic view of snow covered mountain peaks. Nothing better than a glass of wine and enjoying a view that you only get when staying in out-of-way places like Murren (two gondola rides to get up to the town). Truly enjoyable, relaxing and awe inspiring."

This tour did not have the same feel of my previous Rick Steve's experience. It got off to a rocky start in Cologne, which in my opinion is not the best city to start a tour. There was also a disconnect, at least with me, with the tour guide. More on him later.

The tour was well organized, Mattie was excellent as our guide, our city guides were very engaging and informative, the scenery was breath-taking, the cities like Cologne were unexpectedly historic and had precious artifacts in the various museums, and the group was great!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Walking through Trummelbach Falls and experiencing the power of falls through all of the various vantage points. It was truly a multi sensory experience: hearing the mightiness of the falls, seeing the water tumble at the various viewpoints, and then finally seeing the falls tumble into the stream at its base. Our guide, Matthias Unger, was the perfect guide for our itinerary. He gave us great insight to the culture and history of Germany. The trip details were perfectly executed. Our bus driver made travel between stops easy. Our group was a terrific mix of new friends!

Favorite "WOW" moment

"We loved Lake Halstatt! Our hotel could nit have been more perfect! The location, the back patio for gathering was such a pleasure. Of course, lake Halstatt is a beautiful and romantic village to explore."

Mattie made the tour seamless. The sights we saw were beyond comprehension - to say they were incredible is a vast understatement. There was a solid balance between tour time and ‘on our own’ time. I know it was beyond your control, but the people were amazing - we had lots of fun! The long bus rides were arduous- maybe some thought could be done in reducing that. Several of us did not like Cologne - would rather spend that time somewhere else on the tour route.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Switzerland. The Alps were gorgeous but I live in the middle of the Cascades and Olympics. The beauty of that portion of the trip was looking down into the valleys in the area with all the serenity and simpleness. The walks down to Gimmiwald and back from the falls were, without a doubt, the most beautiful part of the entire trip - a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life."

Such a wonderful trip—truly once in a lifetime. I feel like we fit so much into two weeks that I don’t even know how we did it. The hotels were lovely, our tour mates were great, and the experiences were perfection.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"It’s a tie. My jaw dropped entering Switzerland for the first time and seeing the gorgeous waterfalls and grazing cows with bells against the backdrop of the towering Alps. I was also equally impressed when entering our hotel room in Lake Hallstat that overlooked the cliffs and the lake studded with swans."

This was our first Rick Steves trip and first organized tour and it exceeded our expectations. Our guide Mathius(Matty) was an excellent tour guide, the itinerary gave us a nice mix of cities and small villages, the members of the group got along great and we loved the free time to explore on our own or with others in the group. We really appreciated the experience and passion the local tour guides had for the history and culture of their country and town. We learned so much.

The tour was truly enjoyable. We are very glad we had the chance to come. The planned activities daily, when coupled with the free time was exactly the right mix. Our group was a mixture of people from across the US, some who were very knowledgeable travelers. We enjoyed getting to know them. Two weeks was a long time for me to be gone from my job, but it was an awesome two weeks.

Favorite "WOW" moment

"Probably waking up from our hotel at Murren and seeing the view of breathtaking mountains from our window. All of Switzerland was pretty "wow", seeing the quaint village of Gimmelwald, hiking to Kleine Scheidegg and riding up to the Schilthorn were all "pinch me, am I dreaming moments.""

This tour was a whirlwind of extraordinary sites, cuisine, history and current events. It was organized in typical Rick Steves fashion with interesting venues, cozy hotels, and comfortable transportation. There were far too many WOW moments to list each, all expertly facilitated by one of the best guides in Rick's collection and special local guides. The new starting location, Cologne, was a slow start but the remaining of the tour were all sites where we wished for "one more day."

I thought the tour was a fantastic experience. We were able to see and experience a bit of the culture of each of the cities and regions we visited with time to do some of our own exploring and experience building. Loved our fellow group mates and have no complaints about any of the experience.

We enjoyed the tour thoroughly. Our guide Bryan was very professional, the cities and the flow of the tour had a nice pace (even though there were multiple times that freeway construction did cause some delays) and the little surprises along the way were appreciated.

"Murren was the wow factor for our tour, by far! Even though the day we went to the top to view the alps was cloudy, we were able to still see some breathtaking views. The town was quaint and the personnel couldn't have been nicer to our group. Our group had fun with the gondolas along with the hiking in the meadows after we went to the falls."

We had a fantastic time on the overall tour. Bryan Fellbusch was our guide and he was absolutely magnificent. He mixed plenty of history into the places we were visiting and kept everything and everyone organized. Can’t give him enough compliments, this was our first Rick Steves tour and he set the bar extremely high!! We had a great group of people and most of the accommodations were on point.

Any time between May and October is a good time to take a Best of Germany, Austria & Switzerland tour. However, the months of May, June, September, and October are best for combining the convenience of peak season with generally good weather and lighter crowds. Tour Hotels

In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.

Flights

Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.

Most tour members arrange to fly into the Cologne-Bonn airport (CGN) and out of Vienna (VIE) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Alternatively, you can fly into Frankfurt am Main (FRA) as this airport will have the most direct flights. A direct train from the Frankfurt airport to Cologne's central train station is about an hour. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Europe.

We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves tour guidebook.
